LaCuSb$_{2}$ is a superconductor with a transition temperature of about $T_\text{c} = 0.9$K and is a potential platform where Dirac fermions can be experimentally observed. In this paper, we report systematic high-resolution studies of its electronic structure using the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) technique supported by the DFT calculation. The Fermi surface consists of four branches, of which the two inner ones are more 3-dimensional and the theoretical calculations reproduce well the experiment. We observe several linear dispersions forming Dirac-like structures. The nodal lines are present in the system along ${\text{M}}$-${\text{A}}$ and ${\text{X}}$-${\text{R}}$ and Dirac crossings along ${\text{X}}$-${\text{R}}$ are observed by ARPES. Finally, the nesting between external Fermi surface pockets, which corresponds to charge density wave (CDW) modulation vector is enhanced in LaCuSb$_{2}$ as compared to LaAgSb$_{2}$, while CDW appears in the latter system.

We present the pressure dependence of the electronic and dynamical properties of six different CoGe phases: orthorhombic Cmmm, hexagonal P6/mmm and P$\bar{6}$2m, monoclinic C2/m, cubic P2$_{1}$3, and orthorhombic Pnma. Using first-principles DFT calculations and the direct force-constants method, we study the dynamical stability of individual phases under external pressure. We show that the orthorombic Cmmm and hexagonal P6/mmm structures are unstable over a broad pressure range and most pronounced imaginary phonon soft mode in both cases leads to a stable hexagonal P$\bar{6}$2m structure of the lowest ground-state energy of all studied phases at ambient and low (below $\sim 3$ GPa) external pressure. Under these conditions, the cubic P2$_{1}$3 phase has the highest energy, however, together with monoclinic C2/m and orthorombic Pnma it is dynamically stable and all these three structures can potentially coexist as meta-stable phases. Above $\sim 3$ GPa, the cubic P2$_{1}$3 phase becomes the most energetically favorable. Fitting the Birch--Murnaghan equation of state we derive bulk modulus for all mentioned phases, which indicate relatively high resistance of CoGe to compression. Such conclusions are confirmed by band structure calculations. Additionally, we show that electronic bands of the hexagonal P$\bar{6}$2m phase reveal characteristic features of the kagome-like structure, while in the cubic P2$_{1}$3 phase spectrum, one can locate spin-1 and double Weyl fermions. In both cases, the external pressure induces the Lifshitz transition, related to the modification of the Fermi surface topology.

Electron-correlation-driven phonon soft modes have been recently reported in the antiferromagnetic kagome FeGe compound and associated with the observed charge density wave (CDW). In this paper, we present a systematic investigation of the CDW origin in the context of the ab initio lattice dynamics study. Performing the group theory analysis of the mentioned soft mode, we found that the stable structure has the Immm symmetry and can be achieved by shifts of Ge atoms. Additionally, we show that the final structure realizes a distorted honeycomb Ge lattice as well as a non-flat kagome-like Fe net. For completeness, we present the electronic properties calculations. From the theoretical STM topography simulation, we indicate that the observed CDW occurs in the deformed honeycomb Ge sublattice.

Ab initio investigations of structural, electronic, and dynamical properties of the high-temperature $β$ phase of copper pyrophosphate were performed using density functional theory. The electronic band structure shows the Mott insulating state due to electron correlations in copper ions. By calculating phonon dispersion relations, the soft mode at the A point of the Brillouin zone was revealed, showing the dynamical instability of the $β$ phase at low temperatures. The double-well potential connected with the soft mode is derived and the mechanism of the structural phase transition to the $α$ phase is discussed. The self-consistent phonon calculations based on the temperature-dependent effective potential show the stabilization of the $β$ phase at high temperatures, due to the anharmonic effects. The pronounced temperature dependence and the large line width of the soft mode indicate an essential role of anharmonicity in the structural phase transition.

Recently, superconductivity was discovered in the infinite layer of hole-doped nickelates NdNiO$_{2}$. Contrary to this, superconductivity in LaNiO$_{2}$ is still under debate. This indicates the crucial role played by the $f$ electrons on the electronic structure and the pairing mechanism of infinite-layer nickelates. Here we discuss the role of the electron correlations on the $f$ electron states and their influence on the electronic structure. We show that the lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experimental values, independent of the chosen parameters within the DFT+$U$ approach. Increasing Coulomb interaction $U$ tends to shift the $f$ states away from the Fermi level. Surprisingly, independently of the position of $f$ states with respect to the Fermi energy, these states play an important role in the electronic band structure, which can be reflected in the modification of the NdNiO$_{2}$ effective models.

In recent years, nanostructures with hexagonal polytypes of gold have been synthesised, opening new possibilities in nanoscience and technology. As bulk gold crystallizes in the \textit{fcc} phase, surface effects can play an important role in stabilizing hexagonal gold nanostructures. Here we investigate several hetero-structures with Ge substrate, including the \textit{fcc} and \textit{hcp} phases of gold that have been observed experimentally. We determine and discuss their interfacial energies and optimized atomic arrangements, comparing the theory results with available experimental data. Our calculations for the Au-\textit{fcc}(011)/Ge(001) show how the presence of defects in the interface layer can help to stabilize the atomic pattern consistent with microscopic images. The Au-\textit{hcp}/Ge interface with the significant mismatch between two surfaces reveals large atomic displacements, which might indicate that the (111) germanium substrate is not responsible for the formation of the \textit{hcp} phase of gold. Finally, analyzing the electronic properties, we demonstrate that Au/Ge systems have metallic character but covalent-like bonding states between interfacial Ge and Au atoms are also present.

Iron-based superconductors, with the ThCr$_{2}$Si$_{2}$-type tetragonal structure (122 family), due to the iron arsenide/selenide layers exhibit several characteristic electronic properties. For example, multiband character mosty associated with the $d$-orbitals of iron and the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) cylindrical Fermi surface. Moreover, external hydrostatic pressure leads to the isostructural phase transition from the tetragonal to collapsed-tetragonal phase. In this paper, in relation to the iron-based superconductors, we discuss the electronic properties of novel 122-family member RbNi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ [Liu H. et al., Phys. Rev. B 106, 094511 (2022)]. We show that the two Fermi pockets exhibit quasi-2D character. Calculation of the surface spectral function for the (001) surface shows that the surface states are realized independently on the surface termination. Additionally, contrary to the iron-based 122 compounds, RbNi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ exhibits extraordinary multiple isostructural phase transitions under pressure. Moreover, the Lifshizt transition occurs under external pressure, which results into a strong modification of the shapes of the Fermi pockets.

$A$B$_{2}$ ($A=$K, Rb, Cs) compounds crystallize in the cubic Laves phase (symmetry Fd$\bar{3}$m). The geometry of the crystal structure allows the realization of chiral phonons, which are associated with the circulation of atoms around their equilibrium positions. Due to the inversion symmetry and time reversal symmetry, total pseudo-angular momentum (PAM) of the system vanishes. We show that the do** of these system can lead to a new phase with symmetry F$\bar{4}3$m. New systems (KRbBi$_{4}$ and RbCsBi$_{4}$) do not exhibit soft modes (are stable dynamically). Due to the inversion symmetry breaking, realized chiral phonon modes posses a non-zero total PAM. In both type of systems the chiral phonons are realized for the wavectors at the edge of the Brillouine zone. This study explores the possibility of chiral phonon engineering via do**, and predicts two new materials. Discussing the problem opens a new way to study the phonon Hall effect.

Magnetization dynamics triggered with ultrashort laser pulses has been attracting significant attention, with strong focus on the dynamics excited by VIS/NIR pulses. Only recently, strong magnetic response in solid materials induced by intense X-ray pulses from free-electron lasers (FELs) has been observed. The exact mechanisms that trigger the X-ray induced demagnetization are not yet fully understood. They are subject of on-going experimental and theoretical investigations. Here, we present a theoretical analysis of electronic processes occurring during demagnetization of Co multilayer system irradiated by X-ray pulses tuned to L$_3$-absorption edge of cobalt. We show that, similarly as in the case of X-ray induced demagnetization at M-edge of Co, electronic processes play a predominant role in the demagnetization until the pulse fluence does not exceed the structural damage threshold. The impact of electronic processes can reasonably well explain the available experimental data, without a need to introduce the mechanism of stimulated elastic forward scattering.

This paper is devoted to a complex analysis of the electronic band structure of LaAgSb$_{2}$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and theoretical calculations within the direct ab initio method as well as tight binding model formulation. To investigate the possible surface states we performed the direct DFT slab calculation and the surface Green function calculation for the (001) surface. The appearance of the surface states, which depends strongly on surface, points to the conclusion that LaSb termination is realized in the cleaved crystals. Moreover, the surface states predicted by our calculations at the $Γ$ and $X$ points are found by ARPES. Nodal lines, which exist along X--R and M-A path due to crystal symmetry, are also observed experimentally. The calculations reveal another nodal lines, which originate from vanishing of spin-orbit coupling and are located at X-M-A-R plane at the Brillouin zone boundary. In addition, we analyze band structure along the $Γ$-M path to verify, whether Dirac surface states can be expected. Their appearance in this region is not confirmed.

AgF2 has been proposed as a cuprate analogue which requires strong correlation and marked covalence. On the other hand, fluorides are usually quite ionic and 4d transition metals tend to be less correlated than their 3d counterparts, which calls for further scrutiny. We combine valence band photoemission and Auger-Meitner spectroscopy of AgF and AgF2 together with computations in small clusters to estimate values of the Ag 4d Coulomb interaction U 4d and charge-transfer energy. Based on these values, AgF2 can be classified as a charge-transfer correlated insulator according to the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen classification scheme. Thus, we confirm that the material is a cuprate analogue from the point of view of correlations, suggesting that it should become a high-temperature superconductor if metallization is achieved by do**. We present also a computation of the Hubbard U in density functional "+U" methods and discuss its relation to the Hubbard U in spectroscopies.

With this tool, we have studied the response of Co/Pt multilayer system irradiated by an ultrafast extreme ultraviolet pulse at the M-edge of Co (photon energy $\sim$ 60 eV). It was previously investigated experimentally at the FERMI free-electron-laser facility, using the magnetic small-angle X-ray scattering technique. Our simulations show that the magnetic scattering signal from cobalt decreases on femtosecond timescales due to electronic excitation, relaxation and transport processes both in the cobalt and in the platinum layers, following the trend observed in the experimental data. The confirmation of the predominant role of electronic processes for X-ray induced demagnetization in the regime below the structural damage threshold is a step towards quantitative control and manipulation of X-ray induced magnetic processes on femtosecond timescales.

One example of such systems is a recently discovered $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ ($A$ = K, Rb, and Cs) family of compounds. Here, the coexistence of the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity is observed. In this paper, we study the dynamic properties of the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ systems in context of origin of the CDW phase. We show and discuss the structural phase transition from $P6/mmm$ to $C2/m$ symmetry that are induced by the presence of phonon soft modes. We conclude that the CDW observed in this family of compounds is a consequence of the atom displacement, from the high symmetry position of the kagome net, in low-temperature phase. Additionally, using the numerical {\it ab initio} methods, we discuss the charge distribution on the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ surface. We show that the observed experimental %$4\times 1$ stripe-like modulation of the surface, can be related to surface reconstruction and manifestation of the three dimensional $2 \times 2 \times 2$ bulk CDW. Finally, the consequence of realization of the $C2/m$ structure on the electronic properties are discussed. We show that the electronic band structure reconstruction and the accompanying modification of density of states correspond well to the experimental data.

We show that at reduced temperature and electron correlations AgF$_2$ becomes metallic and dynamically unstable in respect to CDW phonon modes that promote charge ordering. The CDW instability is closely related to Kohn anomaly and Fermi surface nesting. The long advocated KBrF$_4$ type CDW Ag$^{1+/3+}$F$_2$ structure and its facile transformation to the ground state Ag$^{2+}$F$_2$ phase is explained. Hexagonal and kagome lattices exhibit extraordinary electronic properties. It is a natural consequence of additional discrete degree of freedom associated with a valley or the occurence of electronic flat-bands. Combination of both types of lattices, observed in CoSn-like compounds, leads not only to the topological electronic behavior, but also to the emergence of chiral phonon modes. Here, we study CoSn-like compounds in the context of realization of chiral phonons. Previous theoretical studies demonstrated that the chiral phonons can be found in ideal two-dimensional hexagonal or kagome lattices. However, it turns out that in the case of CoSn-like systems with the $P6/mmm$ symmetry, the kagome lattice formed by $d$-block element is decorated by the additional $p$-block atom. This results in a two dimensional triangular lattice of atoms with non-equal masses and the absence of chiral phonons in the kagome plane. Contrary to this, the interlayer hexagonal lattice of $p$-block atoms is preserved and allows for the realization of chiral phonons. We discuss properties of these chiral phonons in seven CoSn-like compounds and demonstrate that they do not depend on atomic mass ratio or the presence of intrinsic magnetic order. The chiral phonons of $d$-block atoms can be restored by removing the inversion symmetry. The latter is possible in the crystal structure of CoGe and RhPb with the reduced symmetry ($P\bar{6}2m$) and distorted-kagome-like lattice.

Self-organized silicide nanowires are considered as main building blocks of future nanoelectronics and have been intensively investigated. In nanostructures, the lattice vibrational waves (phonons) deviate drastically from those in bulk crystals, which gives rise to anomalies in thermodynamic, elastic, electronic, and magnetic properties. Hence, a thorough understanding of the physical properties of these materials requires a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics as a function of the nanowire size. We performed a systematic lattice dynamics study of endotaxial FeSi$_2$ nanowires, forming the metastable, surface-stabilized $α$-phase, which are in-plane embedded into the Si(110) surface. The average widths of the nanowires ranged from 24 to 3 nm, their lengths ranged from several $μ$m to about 100 nm. The Fe-partial phonon density of states, obtained by nuclear inelastic scattering, exhibits a broadening of the spectral features with decreasing nanowire width. The experimental data obtained along and across the nanowires unveiled a pronounced vibrational anisotropy that originates from the specific orientation of the tetragonal $α$-FeSi$_2$ unit cell on the Si(110) surface. The results from first-principles calculations are fully consistent with the experimental data and allow for a comprehensive understanding of the lattice dynamics of endotaxial silicide nanowires.

Using density functional theory, we study the lattice dynamical properties of magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) in the high-temperature cubic and low-temperature monoclinic phases. The calculated phonon dispersion curves and phonon density of states are compared with the available experimental data obtained by inelastic neutron, inelastic x-ray, and nuclear inelastic scattering. We find a very good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results for the monoclinic $Cc$ structure revealing the strong coupling between charge-orbital (trimeron) order and specific phonon modes. For the cubic phase, clear discrepancies arise which, remarkably, can be understood assuming that the strong trimeron-phonon coupling can be extended above the Verwey transition, with lattice dynamics influenced by the short-range trimeron order instead of the average cubic structure. Our results establish the validity of trimerons (and trimeron-phonon coupling) in explaining the physics of magnetite much beyond their original formulation.

The interplay between superconductivity, magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling can lead to the realization of non--trivial topological phases. Recent experiments have found signatures of such phases in magnetic nanoflakes formed by nanostructures coupled to a superconducting substrate. These heterostructures comprise a topologically non-trivial region surrounded by a trivial one due to the finite magnetic exchange field induced by the magnetic nanoflake. The analysis of the topological phase diagram of such a system shows that a similar phase separation occurs by tuning the chemical potential of the nanoflake. In this paper, we study such a possibility in detail, analyzing the spatial extent of the edge modes circulating around the nanoflake and discussing some practical implementations. We also show how the chirality of Majorana edge states can be probed using scanning tunneling spectroscopy with a double tip setup.

We use the density functional theory and lattice dynamics calculations to investigate the properties of potassium superoxide KO$_2$ in which spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom are interrelated and determine the low-temperature phase. After calculating phonon dispersion relations in the high-temperature tetragonal $I4/mmm$ structure, we identify a soft phonon mode leading to the monoclinic $C2/c$ symmetry and optimize the crystal geometry resulting from this mode. Thus we reveal a displacive character of the structural transition with the group-subgroup relation between the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We compare the electronic structure of KO$_2$ with antiferromagnetic spin order in the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We emphasize that realistic treatment of the electronic structure requires including the local Coulomb interaction $U$ in the valence orbitals of the O$^-_2$ ions. The presence of the `Hubbard' $U$ leads to the gap opening at the Fermi energy in the tetragonal structure without orbital order but with weak spin-orbit interaction. We remark that the gap opening in the tetragonal phase could also be obtained when the orbital order is initiated in the calculations with a realistic value of $U$. Finally, we show that the local Coulomb interactions and the finite lattice distortion, which together lead to the orbital order via the Jahn-Teller effect, are responsible for the enhanced insulating gap in the monoclinic structure.

The crystallographic orientation, surface morphology and local crystal structure of the nanoislands were investigated by reflection high-energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The Fe-partial phonon density of states (PDOS), obtained by nuclear inelastic scattering, exhibits a pronounced dam** and broadening of the spectral features with decreasing average island height. First-principles calculations of the polarization-projected Si- and Fe-partial phonon dispersions and PDOS enable the disentanglement of the contribution of the $xy$- and $z$-polarized phonons to the experimental PDOS. Modeling of the experimental data with the theoretical results unveils an enhanced dam** of the $z$-polarized phonons for islands with average sizes below 10 nm. This phenomenon is attributed to the fact that the low-energy $z$-polarized phonons couple to the low-energy surface/interface vibrational modes. The thermodynamic and elastic properties obtained from the experimental data show a pronounced size-dependent behavior.

The Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) is the first metal-insulator transition ever observed and involves a concomitant structural rearrangement and charge-orbital ordering. Due to the complex interplay of these intertwined degrees of freedom, a complete characterization of the low-temperature phase of magnetite and the mechanism driving the transition have long remained elusive. It was demonstrated in recent years that the fundamental building blocks of the charge-ordered structure are three-site small polarons called trimerons. However, electronic collective modes of this trimeron order have not been detected to date, and thus an understanding of the dynamics of the Verwey transition from an electronic point of view is still lacking. Here, we discover spectroscopic signatures of the low-energy electronic excitations of the trimeron network using terahertz light. By driving these modes coherently with an ultrashort laser pulse, we reveal their critical softening and hence demonstrate their direct involvement in the Verwey transition. These findings represent the first observation of soft modes in magnetite and shed new light on the cooperative mechanism at the origin of its exotic ground state.

Recent experiments have shown the signatures of Majorana bound states at the ends of magnetic chains deposited on a superconducting substrate. Here, we employ first principles calculations to directly investigate the topological properties of $3d$ transition metal nanochains (i.e., Mn, Cr, Fe and Co). In contrast to the previous studies [Nadj-Perge et al. Science 346, 602 (2014) and Ruby et al. Nano Lett. 17, 4473 (2017)], we found the exact tight binding models in the Wannier orbital basis for the isolated chains as well as for the surface--deposited wires. Based on these models, we calculate topological invariant of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ phase for all systems. Our results for the isolated chains demonstrate the existence of the topological phase only in the Mn and Co systems. We considered also a non-collinear magnetic order as a source of the non--trivial topological phase and found that this type of magnetic order is not a stable ground state in the Fe and Co isolated chains. Further studies showed that a coupling between the chain and substrate leads to strong modification of the band structure. Moreover, the analysis of the topological invariant indicates a possibility of emergence of the topological phase in all studied nanochains deposited on the Pb surface. Therefore, our results demonstrate an important role of the coupling between deposited atoms and a substrate for topological properties of nanosystems.

Using an {\it ab initio} approach, we report a phonon soft mode in the tetragonal structure described by the space group $I4_{1}22$ of the $1$ K $5d$ superconductor Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$. It induces an orthorhombic distortion to a crystal structure described by the space group $F222$ which hosts the superconducting state. This new phase has a lower total energy than the other known crystal structures of Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$. Comprehensive temperature dependent Raman scattering experiments on isotope enriched samples, $^{116}$Cd$_2$Re$_2{^{18}}$O$_7$, not only confirm the already known structural phase transitions but also allow us to identify a new characteristic temperature regime around $\sim 80$ K, below which the Raman spectra undergo remarkable changes with the development of several sharp modes and mode splitting. Together with the results of the \textit{ab initio} phonon calculations we take these observations as strong evidence for another phase transition to a novel low-temperature crystal structure of Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$.

The electronic band structure and crystal parameters were optimized within the density functional theory. The spin-orbit coupling leads to the splitting of the electronic bands and Fermi surfaces, with the stronger effect observed for the compounds with the heavier atoms Ir and Pt. The possible mixing of the spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing in the superconducting state is discussed. The phonon dispersion relations and phonon density of states were obtained using the direct method. The dispersion curves in ThCoSi and ThIrSi exhibit the low-energy modes along the S-N-S0 line with the tendency for softening and dynamic instability. The structure and dynamical properties of the Fe$_3$Si/GaAs(001) interface are investigated by density functional theory and nuclear inelastic scattering measurements. The stability of four different atomic configurations of the Fe$_3$Si/GaAs multilayers is analyzed by calculating the formation energies and phonon dispersion curves. The differences in charge density, magnetization, and electronic density of states between the configurations are examined. Our calculations unveil that magnetic moments of the Fe atoms tend to align in a plane parallel to the interface, along the [110] direction of the Fe$_3$Si crystallographic unit cell. In some configurations, the spin polarization of interface layers is larger than that of bulk Fe$_3$Si. The effect of the interface on element-specific and layer-resolved phonon density of states is discussed. The Fe-partial phonon density of states measured for the Fe$_3$Si layer thickness of three monolayers is compared with theoretical results obtained for each interface atomic configuration. The best agreement is found for one of the configurations with a mixed Fe-Si interface layer, which reproduces the anomalous enhancement of the phonon density of states below 10 meV

An example of a compound with such a phase transition is KFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, which belongs to the family of the iron-based superconductors. In this paper, we investigate the effects of the phase transition on the structural, electronic, and dynamical properties of this compound. Performing the ab initio calculations, we reproduce the dependence of the lattice constants on pressure and analyze the changes of the inter-atomic distances in the tetragonal and collapsed tetragonal phases. Using the tight binding model with maximally localized Wannier orbitals, we calculate and discuss the influence of pressure on the electronic band structure as well as on the shape of the Fermi surface. We found a precursor of the phase transition in the form of enhancement of overlap** between two Wannier orbitals of As atoms. In order to better understand the superconducting properties of KFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, we study the orbital-projected Cooper pairs susceptibility as a function of pressure. We found a decrease of susceptibility with the increasing pressure in a good qualitative agreement with experimental observation. The structural transition also influences the phonon spectrum of KFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, which exhibits pronounced changes induced by pressure. Some phonon modes related with the vibrations of Fe and As atoms show an anomalous, nonmonotonic dependence on pressure close to the phase transition.

The structural and dynamical properties of FePt nanoparticles were studied within the density functional theory. The effect of size and chemical composition on dynamical stability of nanoparticles was investigated for the cuboctahedral and icosahedral symmetries. In cuboctahedra, the structural distortion is observed, which for systems with odd number of Pt layers leads to lowering of the tetragonal symmetry. Significant differences between the vibrational properties of FePt particles and bulk crystal is observed, but similarly to the FePt crystal, cuboctahedral particles exhibit a strong anisotropy of atomic vibrations. The icosahedral particles with perfect shell geometry are unstable due to enlarged distances between Fe atoms. They can be stabilized by removing a central atom or replacing it by a smaller one. The heat capacity and entropy of nanoparticles show typical enhancement due to low-energy vibrations at the surface layers.

We introduce and investigate a two-band model with intra-band pairing in the relevant parameters regime to address a generic behaviour of a system with hole-like and electron-like bands in external magnetic field. Our results show that two Lifshitz transitions can develop in analysed systems and the first one occurs in the superconducting phase and takes place at approximately constant magnetic field. Symmetry breaking across phase transitions often causes changes in selection rules and emergence of optical modes which can be detected via spectroscopic techniques or generated coherently in pump-probe experiments. In second-order or weakly first-order transitions, fluctuations of the order parameter are present above the ordering temperature, giving rise to intriguing precursor phenomena, such as critical opalescence. Here, we demonstrate that in magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) light excitation couples to the critical fluctuations of the charge order and coherently generates structural modes of the ordered phase above the critical temperature of the Verwey transition. Our findings are obtained by detecting coherent oscillations of the optical constants through ultrafast broadband spectroscopy and analyzing their dependence on temperature. To unveil the coupling between the structural modes and the electronic excitations, at the origin of the Verwey transition, we combine our results from pump-probe experiments with spontaneous Raman scattering data and theoretical calculations of both the phonon dispersion curves and the optical constants. Our methodology represents an effective tool to study the real-time dynamics of critical fluctuations across phase transitions.

The structural and magnetic properties of ultrathin FeO(111) films on Pt(111) with thicknesses from 1 to 16 monolayers (ML) were studied using the nuclear inelastic scattering (NIS) of synchrotron radiation. Distinct evolution of vibrational characteristics with thickness that is revealed in the phonon density of states (PDOS) witnesses a textbook transition from 2D to 3D lattice dynamics. For the thinnest films of 1 and 2 ML, the low energy part of the PDOS followed a linear dependence in energy that is characteristic for 2-dimensional systems. This dependence gradually transforms with thickness to the bulk ~E-square relation. Density functional theory phonon calculations perfectly reproduced the measured 1 ML PDOS within a simple model of a pseudomorphic FeO/Pt(111) interface. The calculations show that the 2D PDOS character is due to a weak coupling of the FeO film to the Pt(111) substrate. The evolution of the vibrational properties with an increasing thickness is closely related to a transient long range magnetic order and stabilization of an unusual structural phase.

We have determined the creation energy of the dislocations as a function of distance between their cores. The radial distribution function has been applied to examine strong impact of the dislocations on the local crystal structure. The analysis of the electronic structure reveals mid-gap levels induced by broken atomic bonds in the dislocation core. The maps of charge distribution and electrostatic potential have been calculated and the significant decrease of the electrostatic barriers in the vicinity of the dislocation cores has been quantified. The structure, dynamics and stability of Fe-Pt nanoparticles have been investigated using DFT-based techniques: total energy calculations and DFT molecular dynamics. The investigated systems included multi-shell and disordered nanoparticles of iron and platinum. The study is concerned with icosahedral particles with magic number of atoms (55): iron-terminated Fe$_{43}$Pt$_{12}$, platinum-terminated Fe$_{12}$Pt$_{43}$, and disordered Fe$_{27}$Pt$_{28}$. Additionally, the Fe$_6$Pt$_7$ cluster has been investigated to probe behaviour of extremely small Fe-Pt particles. Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed for a few temperatures between $T=150-1000$ K. The calculations revealed high structural instability of the Fe-terminated nanoparticles and a strong stabilising effect of the Pt-termination in the shell-type icosahedral particles. The platinum termination prevented disordering of the particle even at $T=1000$ K indicating very high melting temperatures of these Fe-Pt icosahedral structures. The analysis of evolution of the radial distribution function has shown significant tendency of Pt atoms to move to the outside layer of the particles -- even in the platinum deficient cases.

The structure, magnetic properties, and lattice dynamics of ordered Fe-Pt alloys with three stoichiometric compositions, Fe$_3$Pt, FePt and FePt$_3$, have been investigated using the density functional theory. Additionally, the existing experimental data have been complemented by new measurements of the Fe projected phonon density of states performed for the Fe$_3$Pt and FePt$_3$ thin films using the nuclear inelastic scattering technique. The calculated phonon dispersion relations and phonon density of states have been compared with the experimental data. The dispersion curves are very well reproduced by the calculations, although, the softening of the transversal acoustic mode TA$_1$ leads to some discrepancy between the theory and experiment in Fe$_3$Pt. A very goood agreement between the measured spectra and calculations performed for the tetragonal structure derived from the soft mode may signal that the tetragonal phase with the space group $P4/mbm$ plays an important role in the martensitic transformation observed in Fe$_3$Pt. For FePt$_3$, the antiferromagnetic order appearing with decreasing temperature has been also investigated. The studies showed that the phonon density of states of FePt$_3$ very weakly depends on the magnetic configuration.

The influence of intrinsic Fe defects in FeO (either single cation vacancies or prototypical 4:1 vacancy clusters) on the electronic and dielectric properties is studied within the density functional theory. The importance of local Coulomb interactions at Fe atoms is highlighted and shown to be responsible for the observed insulating Mott gap in FeO which is reduced by the presence of defects. We investigate nonstoichiometric configurations of Fe1-xO with x ranging from 3 to 9 % and find the aliovalent Fe cations in both the regular and interstitial lattice sites of the considered configurations. Furthermore, we show that the trivalent Fe ions are induced by both isolated and clustered Fe-vacancies and introduce the empty band states inside the insulating gap, which decreases monotonically with increasing cation vacancy concentration. The Fe1-xO systems with high defect content become metallic for small values of the Coulomb interaction U, yielding the increase in the dielectric functions and optical reflectivity at low energies in agreement with the experimental data. Due to the crystal defects, the infrared-active transverse optic phonons split and distribute over a wide range of frequencies clarifying the origin of the exceptionally large spectral linewidths of the dielectric loss functions observed for wustite in recent experiments.

We report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics of URu$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of temperature using Raman scattering, optical conductivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as theoretical {\it ab initio} calculations. The main effects on the optical phonon modes are related to Kondo physics. The B$_{1g}$ ($Γ_3$ symmetry) phonon mode slightly softens below $\sim$100~K, in connection with the previously reported softening of the elastic constant, $C_{11}-C_{12}$, of the same symmetry, both observations suggesting a B$_{1g}$ symmetry-breaking instability in the Kondo regime. Through optical conductivity, we detect clear signatures of strong electron-phonon coupling, with temperature dependent spectral weight and Fano line shape of some phonon modes. Surprisingly, the line shapes of two phonon modes, E$_u$(1) and A$_{2u}$(2), show opposite temperature dependencies. The A$_{2u}$(2) mode loses its Fano shape below 150 K, whereas the E$_u$(1) mode acquires it below 100~K, in the Kondo cross-over regime. This may point out to momentum-dependent Kondo physics. By inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we have drawn the full dispersion of the phonon modes between 300~K and 2~K. No remarkable temperature dependence has been obtained including through the hidden order transition. {\it Ab initio} calculations with the spin-orbit coupling are in good agreement with the data except for a few low energy branches with propagation in the (a,b) plane.

Magnetite, Fe$_3$O$_4$, is the first magnetic material discovered and utilized by mankind in Ancient Greece, yet it still attracts attention due to its puzzling properties. This is largely due to the quest for a full and coherent understanding of the Verwey transition that occurs at $T_V=124$ K and is associated with a drop of electric conductivity and a complex structural phase transition. A recent detailed analysis of the structure, based on single crystal diffraction, suggests that the electron localization pattern contains linear three-Fe-site units, the so-called trimerons. Here we show that whatever the electron localization pattern is, it partially survives up to room temperature as short-range correlations in the high-temperature cubic phase, easily discernible by diffuse scattering. Additionally, {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations reveal that characteristic features in these diffuse scattering patterns can be correlated with the Fermi surface topology.

We report pronounced modifications of electronic and vibrational properties induced in FeO by cation vacancies, obtained within density functional theory incorporating strong local Coulomb interactions at Fe atoms. The insulating gap of FeO is reduced by about 50% due to unoccupied electronic bands introduced by trivalent Fe ions stabilized by cation vacancies. The changes in the electronic structure along with atomic displacements induced by cation vacancies affect strongly phonon dispersions via modified force constants, including those at atoms beyond nearest neighbors of defects. We demonstrate that theoretical phonon dispersions and their densities of states reproduce the results of inelastic neutron and nuclear resonant x-ray scattering experiments \emph{only} when Fe vacancies and Coulomb interaction $U$ are both included explicitly in \emph{ab initio} simulations, which also suggests that the electron-phonon coupling in FeO is strong.

We present the results of inelastic x-ray scattering for magnetite and analyze the energies and spectral widths of the phonon modes with different symmetries in a broad range of temperature 125<T<293 K. The phonon modes with X_4 and Delta_5 symmetries broaden in a nonlinear way with decreasing temperature when the Verwey transition is approached. It is found that the maxima of phonon widths occur away from high-symmetry points which indicates the incommensurate character of critical fluctuations. Strong phonon anharmonicity induced by electron-phonon coupling is discovered within ab initio calculations which take into account local Coulomb interactions at Fe ions. It (i) explains observed anomalous phonon broadening, and (ii) demonstrates that the Verwey transition is a cooperative phenomenon which involves a wide spectrum of phonons coupled to charge fluctuations condensing in the low-symmetry phase.

The electronic properties of two spinels Fe$_3$O$_4$ and Fe$_2$SiO$_4$ are studied by the density functional theory. The local Coulomb repulsion $U$ and the Hund's exchange $J$ between the $3d$ electrons on iron are included. For $U=0$, both spinels are half-metals, with the minority $t_{2g}$ states at the Fermi level. Magnetite remains a metal in a cubic phase even at large values of $U$. The metal-insulator transition is induced by the $X_3$ phonon, which lowers the total energy and stabilizes the charge-orbital ordering. Fe$_2$SiO$_4$ transforms to a Mott insulating state for $U>2$ eV with a gap $Δ_g\sim U$. The antiferromagnetic interactions induce the tetragonal distortion, which releases the geometrical frustration and stabilizes the long-range order. The differences of electronic structures in the high-symmetry cubic phases and the distorted low-symmetry phases of both spinels are discussed.

The structure, lattice dynamics and mechanical properties of the magnesium hydroxide have been investigated with static density functional theory calculations as well as \it {ab initio} molecular dynamics. The hypothesis of a superstructure existing in the lattice formed by the hydrogen atoms has been tested. The elastic constants of the material have been calculated with static deformations approach and are in fair agreement with the experimental data. The hydrogen subsystem structure exhibits signs of disordered behaviour while maintaining correlations between angular positions of neighbouring atoms. We establish that the essential angular correlations between hydrogen positions are maintained to the temperature of at least 150 K and show that they are well described by a physically motivated probabilistic model. The rotational degree of freedom appears to be decoupled from the lattice directions above 30K.

Experimental investigation as well as theoretical calculations, of the Fe-partial phonon density-of-states (DOS) for nominally Fe_52.5Cr_47.5 alloy having (a) alpha- and (b) sigma-phase structure were carried out. The former at sector 3-ID of the Advanced Photon Source, using the method of nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, and the latter with the direct method [K. Parlinski et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {78, 4063 (1997)]. The characteristic features of phonon DOS, which differentiate one phase from the other, were revealed and successfully reproduced by the theory. Various data pertinent to the dynamics such as Lamb-Mossbauer factor, f, kinetic energy per atom, E_k, and the mean force constant, D, were directly derived from the experiment and the theoretical calculations, while vibrational specific heat at constant volume, C_V, and vibrational entropy, S were calculated using the Fe-partial DOS. Using the values of f and C_V, we determined values for Debye temperatures, T_D. An excellent agreement for some quantities derived from experiment and first-principles theory, like C_V and quite good one for others like D and S was obtained.

The Verwey phase transition in magnetite has been analyzed using the group theory methods. It is found that two order parameters with the symmetries $X_3$ and $Δ_5$ induce the structural transformation from the high-temperature cubic to the low-temperature monoclinic phase. The coupling between the order parameters is described by the Landau free energy functional. The electronic and crystal structure for the cubic and monoclinic phases were optimized using the {\it ab initio} density functional method. The electronic structure calculations were performed within the generalized gradient approximation including the on-site interactions between 3d electrons at iron ions -- the Coulomb element $U$ and Hund's exchange $J$. Only when these local interactions are taken into account, the phonon dispersion curves, obtained by the direct method for the cubic phase, reproduce the experimental data. It is shown that the interplay of local electron interations and the coupling to the lattice drives the phonon order parameters and is responsible for the opening of the gap at the Fermi energy. Thus, it is found that the metal-insulator transition in magnetite is promoted by local electron interactions, which significantly amplify the electron-phonon interaction and stabilize weak charge order coexisting with orbital order of the occupied $t_{2g}$ states at Fe ions. This provides a scenario to understand the fundamental problem of the origin of the Verwey transition in magnetite.

Two primary order parameters with $X_3$ and $Δ_5$ symmetries are identified. They induce the phase transformation from the high-temperature cubic to the low-temperature monoclinic structure. The on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ between 3d electrons at Fe ions plays a crucial role in this transition -- it amplifies the coupling of phonons to conduction electrons and thus opens a gap at the Fermi energy. {\it Published in Phys.
