Using a constrained fermionic self-consistent mean-field method, we analyze the quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state for the extended Kitaev model with both the Zeeman term and the perturbative three-spin interaction term $κ$. Our results demonstrate the dependence of the stability of the Kitaev QSL state on the field direction, consistent with findings in the literature. Additionally, we calculate the phonon dynamics for acoustic phonons coupled to the Majorana fermion excitations of the Kitaev spin liquid state, discussing the temperature and field evolution of these quantities.

The Kitaev honeycomb model provides a paradigmatic example of an exactly solvable quantum spin liquid
(QSL), in which the spin degrees of freedom fractionalize into itinerant Majorana fermions coupled to a static background of $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ gauge fluxes. This model has attracted significant attention in recent years due to the possibility of its experimental realization in some spin-orbit Mott insulators such as $ α$-RuCl$ _3 $. Among various experimental probes, ultrasound experiments measuring sound attenuation have emerged as a promising avenue to unveil the fractionalization of spins in these materials. Yet, candidate materials often deviate from the ideal Kitaev model due to the presence of disorder, leading to the emergence of localized modes governing low-energy physics. To provide further insight into the effects of these defect-induced modes on the phonon dynamics, we calculate the sound attenuation coefficient in the site-disordered Kitaev honeycomb model with an applied magnetic field, which breaks the time-reversal symmetry. In order to obtain a more accurate perspective on the temperature-dependent sound attenuation in this model, the impact of thermally excited fluxes on the disordered system is also analyzed.

The Yao-Lee model is an example of exactly solvable spin-orbital models that are generalizations of the original Kitaev honeycomb model with extra local orbital degrees of freedom. Similar to the Kitaev model, both spin and orbital degrees of freedom are effectively represented using sets of three-flavored Majorana fermions. The Yao-Lee model exhibits a quantum spin liquid ground state with gapped and immobile $Z_2$ fluxes and three-fold degenerate itinerant Majorana fermions. Our work demonstrated that by introducing different time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking fields one can split the degeneracy of Majorana fermions and close the gap for some of the bands, thus changing its topology. We calculated a comprehensive topological phase diagram for the Yao-Lee model by considering various combinations of TRS-breaking fields. This investigation revealed the emergence of distinct topological regions, each separated by nodal lines, signifying an evolution in the model's topological properties. We also investigated the impact of vacancies in the system. Our findings revealed that while vacancies modify the low-energy spectrum of the model, their presence has a limited impact on the topological properties of the model, at least for small enough concentrations.

It is well-recognized that the low-energy physics of many Kitaev materials is governed by two dominant energy scales, the Ising-like Kitaev coupling $K$ and the symmetric off-diagonal $Γ$ coupling. An understanding of the interplay between these two scales is therefore the natural starting point toward a quantitative description that includes sub-dominant perturbations that are inevitably present in real materials. The present study focuses on the classical $K$-$Γ$ model on the honeycomb lattice, with a specific emphasis on the region $K<0$ and $Γ>0$, which is the most relevant for the available materials and which remains enigmatic in both quantum and classical limits, despite much effort. We employ large-scale Monte Carlo simulations on specially designed finite-size clusters and unravel the presence of a complex multi-sublattice magnetic orders in a wide region of the phase diagram, whose structure is characterized in detail. We show that this order can be quantified in terms of a coarse-grained scalar-chirality order, featuring a counter-rotating modulation on the two spin sublattices. We also provide a comparison to previous studies and discuss the impact of quantum fluctuations on the phase diagram.

We study the dynamical response of vacancy-induced quasiparticle excitations in the site-diluted Kitaev spin liquid with a magnetic field. Due to the flux-binding effect and the emergence of dangling Majorana fermions around each spin vacancy, the low-energy physics is governed by a set of vacancy-induced quasi-zero-energy modes. These localized modes result in unique characteristics of the dynamical spin correlation functions, which intriguingly mimic the single-quasiparticle density of states and further exhibit a quasi-zero-frequency peak. By recognizing the potential observability of these local correlation functions via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we show how the STM response is sensitive to the local flux configuration, the magnetic field strength, and the vacancy concentration. Constructing a simple model of the localized modes, we also elucidate how the local correlation functions can be interpreted in terms of the hybridization between these modes.

Spin vacancies in the non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are known to harbor Majorana zero modes, potentially enabling topological quantum computing at elevated temperatures. Here, we study the spectroscopic signatures of such Majorana zero modes in a scanning tunneling setup where a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid with a finite density of spin vacancies forms a tunneling barrier between a tip and a substrate. Our key result is a well-defined peak close to zero bias voltage in the derivative of the tunneling conductance whose voltage and intensity both increase with the density of vacancies. This ''quasi-zero-voltage peak'' is identified as the closest analog of the zero-voltage peak observed in topological superconductors that additionally reflects the fractionalized nature of spin-liquid-based Majorana zero modes. We further highlight a single-fermion Van Hove singularity at a higher voltage that reveals the energy scale of the emergent Majorana fermions in the Kitaev spin liquid. Our proposed signatures are within reach of current experiments on the candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$.

In this work, we study magnetoelastic interactions by means of ultrasound experiments in $α$-RuCl$_3$ -- a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice, with a possible spin-liquid state featuring Majorana fermions and $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-flux excitations. We present results of the temperature and in-plane magnetic-field dependence of the sound velocity and sound attenuation for several longitudinal and transverse phonon modes propagating along high-symmetry crystallographic directions. A comprehensive data analysis above the ordered state provides strong evidence of phonon scattering by Majorana fermions. This scattering depends sensitively on the value of the phonon velocities relative to the characteristic velocity of the low-energy fermionic excitations describing the spin dynamics of the underlying Kitaev magnet. Moreover, our data displays a distinct reduction of anisotropy of the sound attenuation, consistent with randomization, generated by thermally excited $\mathbb{Z}_2$ visons. We demonstrate the potential of phonon dynamics as a promising probe for uncovering fractionalized excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and provide new insights into the $H$-$T$ phase diagram of this material.

Candidate materials for the Kitaev spin liquid generically have residual interactions beyond the Kitaev coupling. It therefore becomes necessary to understand how signatures of the quantum spin liquid, e.g., fractionalization of the spin excitations, are affected by the presence of these interactions. Recently it was shown that phonon dynamics is an indirect but effective probe to study fractionalized excitations in the Kitaev spin liquid. Ultrasound experiments can measure sound attenuation, which should show characteristic temperature and angular dependence of the sound attenuation coefficient if the scattering of phonons happens predominantly on Majorana fermions. So far the computation of the sound attenuation was only done in the pure spin-phonon coupled Kitaev model, without taking into account residual interactions. In order to understand experimental signatures, here we present a mean-field study of the sound attenuation in the generalized $J$-$K$-$Γ$ model, which is relevant to candidate materials. Our findings show that as long as the system is in the spin liquid phase, characteristic features of the sound attenuation remain observable even in the presence of residual interactions.

Our work suggests that in the temperature range between 15~K and 33~K, Nd magnetic moments exhibit characteristic spin ice fluctuations, which indicate a strong enhancement of magnetic interactions between Nd ions. This complex behavior emerges from the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations, and geometric frustration on two magnetic pyrochlore sublattices of Nd and Ir ions. The ordering of Ir magnetic moments is accompanied by an appearance of one-magnon Raman modes at 26.3 and 29.6 meV compatible with the AIAO order and of a broad mode at 14 meV, characteristic of the spinon continuum originated from Nd spin ice fluctuations. While two one-magnon excitations show minimal temperature evolution with decreasing temperature, the 14 meV mode shifts to higher frequencies as the temperature approaches a crossover to Nd AIAO order, broadens, and disappears below 15~K. An additional two-magnon excitation of the AIAO Nd order at around 33 meV appears in the spectra at low temperatures. These rather high energies of magnetic excitations of Nd moments make Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ a particularly attractive playground to study the rare-earth magnetism on the pyrochlore lattice.

This model is the minimum model in Kitaev systems that has conserved plaquette fluxes, and its quasi-one-dimensional geometry makes it possible to study the strong-disorder fixed points for both spin- and flux- excitation gaps. In the Ising limit, the behavior of the spin gap is consistent with the familiar random transverse-field Ising chain, but the flux gap is dominated by the y-coupling. In the XX limit, while the x- and y-couplings are renormalized simultaneously, the z-couplings are not renormalized drastically and lead to non-universal disorder criticality at low-energy scales.

The main results include a massive low-temperature reorganization of the INS spectral weight that evolves into a broad peak centered around 12 meV, and a distinctive peak in the THz data at 2.8(1) meV. A detailed comparison to powder-averaged spin-wave theory calculations reveals that the positions of these two features are controlled by the anisotropic $Γ$ coupling and the Heisenberg exchange $J$, respectively. The refined microscopic spin model places $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ in close proximity to the Kitaev spin liquid phase.

The emergence of scalar Higgs-type amplitude modes in systems where symmetry is spontaneously broken has been a highly successful, paradigmatic description of phase transitions, with implications ranging from high-energy particle physics to low-energy condensed matter systems. Here, we uncover two successive high temperature phase transitions in the pyrochlore magnet Nd$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$ at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 147$ K and $T^* = 97$ K, that lead to giant phonon instabilities and culminate in the emergence of a highly coherent excitation. This coherent excitation, distinct from other phonons and from conventional magnetic modes, stabilizes at a low energy of 3 meV. We assign it to a collective Higgs-type amplitude mode, that involves bond energy modulations of the Ru$_4$ tetrahedra. Its striking two-fold symmetry, incompatible with the underlying crystal structure, highlights the possibility of multiple entangled broken symmetries.

The spectra exhibits a coexistence of a broad scattering continuum and two sharp low-energy peaks at 2.5 meV and 3 meV, with a distinctive polarization dependence. While the continuum is suggestive of fractional quasi-particles emerging from a proximate quantum spin liquid phase, the sharp peaks provide the first experimental signature of the `non-Loudon-Fleury' one-magnon scattering processes proposed recently [Phys. Rev. B 104, 144412 (2021)]. The corresponding microscopic mechanism is similar to the one leading to the symmetric off-diagonal exchange interaction $Γ$ (as it involves a combination of both direct and ligand-mediated exchange paths), but is otherwise completely unexpected within the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory of Raman scattering. The present experimental verification therefore calls for a drastic reevaluation of Raman scattering in similar systems with strong spin orbit coupling and multiple exchange paths.

We develop a theoretical description of the Raman spectroscopy in the spin-phonon coupled Kitaev system and show that it can provide intriguing observable signatures of fractionalized excitations characteristic of the underlying spin liquid phase. In particular, we obtain the explicit form of the phonon modes and construct the coupling Hamiltonians based on $D_{3d}$ symmetry. We then systematically compute the Raman intensity and show that the spin-phonon coupling renormalizes phonon propagators and generates the salient Fano linshape. We find that the temperature evolution of the Fano lineshape displays two crossovers, and the low temperature crossover shows pronounced magnetic field dependence. We thus identify the observable effect of the Majorana fermions and the $Z_2$ gauge fluxes encoded in the Fano lineshape. Our results explain several phonon Raman scattering experiments in the candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$.

We revisit the theory of magnetic Raman scattering in Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, with a major focus on Kitaev materials. We show that Kitaev materials with bond-anisotropic interactions are generally expected to show both one- and two-magnon responses. It is further shown that, in order to obtain the correct leading contributions to the Raman vertex operator $\mc{R}$, one must take into account the precise, photon-assisted microscopic hop** processes of the electrons and that, in systems with multiple hop** paths, $\mc{R}$ contains terms beyond those appearing in the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory. Most saliently, a numerical implementation of the revised formalism to the case of the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb Kitaev material $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ reveals that the non-Loudon-Fleury scattering terms actually dominate the Raman intensity. In addition, they induce a qualitative modification of the polarization dependence, including, e.g., the emergence of a sharp one-magnon peak at low energies which is not expected in the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory. This peak is shown to arise from microscopic photon-assisted tunneling processes that are of similar type with the ones leading to the symmetric off-diagonal interaction $Γ$ (known to be present in many Kitaev materials), but take the form of a bond-directional magnetic dipole term in the Raman vertex. These results are expected to apply across all Kitaev materials and mark a drastic change of paradigm for the understanding of Raman scattering in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and multiple exchange paths.

Here we present a study of the phonon dynamics in the honeycomb Kitaev spin model at finite temperatures. We show that the fractionalized spin excitations of the Kitaev spin liquid, the itinerant Majorana fermions and static $Z_2$ fluxes, have distinct effects on the phonon dynamics, which makes the phonon dynamics a promising tool for exploring the Kitaev spin liquid candidate materials. In particular, we will focus on the signature of the fractionalized excitations in the thermodynamic behaviour of the sound attenuation and the phonon Hall viscosity: The former describes the phonon decay into the fractionalized excitations, and the later is the leading order time reversal symmetry breaking effect on the acoustic phonon. We find that the angular dependence of the attenuation coefficient and its magnitude are modified by the thermal excitation of the $Z_2$ fluxes. The strength of this effect strongly depends on the relative magnitude of the sound velocity and the Fermi velocity characterizing the low-energy Majorana fermions. We also show that the Hall viscosity is strongly suppressed by the increase of the density of the $Z_2$ fluxes at finite temperatures. All these observations reflect the effects of the emergent disorder on the Majorana fermions introduced by the $Z_2$ fluxes. Our analysis is based on the complementary analytical calculations in the low-temperature zero-flux sector, and numerical calculations in the inhomogeneous flux sectors at intermediate and high temperatures with stratified Monte Carlo (strMC) method.

In recent years, several magnetic Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit couplings were suggested to be proximate to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) whose one of the most exciting features is the fractionalization of spin excitations into itinerant Majorana fermions and static $Z_2$ fluxes. Motivated by the emergence of this plethora of 4d and 5d transition metal Kitaev materials and by the fact that some level of disorder is inevitable in real materials, here we study how the Kitaev QSL responds to various forms of disorder, such as vacancies, impurities, and bond randomness. First, we argue that the presence of the quenched disorder in the Kitaev QSL can lead to the Anderson localization of Majorana fermions and the appearance of Lifshitz tails. We point out that the Anderson localization of low-energy states is particularly strong in the extended Kitaev model with the time reversal symmetry breaking term. Second, we show that the disorder effects on the low-energy Majorana fermion modes can be detected in thermal transport. Third, we show that at finite temperatures the $Z_2$ fluxes become thermally excited and give rise to an additional disorder for the Majorana fermions. This source of the disorder dominates at high temperatures. Fourth, we demonstrate that both the structure of the energy spectrum and the thermal transport properties of the disordered Kitaev QSL depend strongly on the character of disorder. While we find that both the site disorder and the bond randomness suppress the longitudinal thermal conductivity, the low-energy localization is stronger in the case of the site disorder.

The family of edge-sharing tri-coordinated iridates and ruthenates has emerged in recent years as a major platform for Kitaev spin liquid physics, where spins fractionalize into emergent magnetic fluxes and Majorana fermions with Dirac-like dispersions. While such exotic states are usually pre-empted by long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, signatures of Majorana fermions with long coherent times have been predicted to manifest at intermediate and higher energy scales, similar to the observation of spinons in quasi-1D spin chains. Here we present a Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering study of the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under a magnetic field with a record-high-resolution spectrometer. At low-temperatures, dispersing spin waves can be resolved around the predicted intertwined incommensurate spiral and field-induced zigzag orders, whose excitation energy reaches a maximum of 16meV. A 2T magnetic field softens the dispersion around ${\bf Q}=0$. The behavior of the spin waves under magnetic field is consistent with our semiclassical calculations for the ground state and the dynamical spin structure factor, which further predicts that the ensued intertwined uniform states remain robust up to very high fields (100 T). Most saliently, the low-energy magnon-like mode is superimposed by a broad continuum of excitations, centered around 35meV and extending up to 100meV. This high-energy continuum survives up to at least 300K -- well above the ordering temperature of 38K -- and gives evidence for pairs of long-lived Majorana fermions of the proximate Kitaev spin liquid.

Here we revisit the thermodynamics of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid realized on the honeycomb lattice. We address two main questions: First, we investigate whether there are observable thermodynamic signatures of the topological Majorana boundary modes of the Kitaev honeycomb model. We argue that for the time-reversal invariant case the residual low-temperature entropy is the primary thermodynamic signature of these Majorana edge modes, and verify using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations that this residual entropy is present in the full Kitaev model. When time-reversal symmetry is broken, the Majorana edge modes are potentially observable in more direct thermodynamic measurements such as the specific heat, though only at temperatures well below the bulk gap. % Second, we study the energetics, and the corresponding thermodynamic signatures, of the flux excitations in the Kitaev model. Specifically, we study the flux interactions on both cylinder and torus geometries numerically, and quantify their impact on the thermodynamics of the Kitaev spin liquid by using a polynomial fit for the average flux energy as a function of flux density and extrapolating it to the thermodynamic limit. By comparing this model to Monte Carlo simulations, we find that flux interactions have a significant quantitative impact on the shape and the position of the low-temperature peak in the specific heat.

The Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention due to its exactly solvable spin-liquid ground state with fractionalized Majorana excitations and its possible materialization in magnetic Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit couplings. Recently, the 5d-electron compound H$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$ has shown to be a strong candidate for Kitaev physics considering the absence of any signs of a long-range ordered magnetic state. In this work, we demonstrate that a finite density of random vacancies in the Kitaev model gives rise to a striking pileup of low-energy Majorana eigenmodes and reproduces the apparent power-law upturn in the specific heat measurements of H$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Physically, the vacancies can originate from various sources such as missing magnetic moments or the presence of non-magnetic impurities (true vacancies), or from local weak couplings of magnetic moments due to strong but rare bond randomness (quasivacancies). We show numerically that the vacancy effect is readily detectable even at low vacancy concentrations and that it is not very sensitive neither to nature of vacancies nor to different flux backgrounds. We also study the response of the site-diluted Kitaev spin liquid to the three-spin interaction term, which breaks time-reversal symmetry and imitates an external magnetic field. We propose a field-induced flux-sector transition where the ground state becomes flux free for larger fields, resulting in a clear suppression of the low temperature specific heat. Finally, we discuss the effect of dangling Majorana fermions in the case of true vacancies and show that their coupling to an applied magnetic field via the Zeeman interaction can also account for the scaling behavior in the high-field limit observed in H$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$.

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnet is one of the paradigmatic playgrounds for frustrated quantum magnetism, with an extensive number of competing resonating valence bond (RVB) states emerging at low energies, including gapped and gapless spin liquids and valence bond crystals. Here we revisit the crossover from this quantum RVB phase to a semiclassical regime brought about by anisotropic Kitaev interactions, and focus on the precise mechanisms underpinning this crossover. To this end, we introduce a simple parametrization of the classical ground states (GSs) in terms of emergent Ising-like variables, and use this parametrizaton: i) to construct an effective low-energy description of the order-by-disorder mechanism operating in a large part of the phase diagram, and ii) to contrast, side by side, exact diagonalization data obtained from the full basis with that obtained from the restricted (orthonormalized) basis of classical GSs. The results reveal that fluctuation corrections from states outside the restricted basis are strongly quenched inside the semiclassical regime (due to the large anisotropy spin gaps), and that the RVB phase survives up to a relatively large value of Kitaev anisotropy $K$. We further find that the pure Kitaev model admits a subextensive number of one-dimensional symmetries, which explains naturally the absence of classical and quantum order by disorder reported previously.

Most saliently, we observe: i) an unusual reentrance of the incommensurate counter-rotating order for fields in the $ab$-plane, and ii) a set of abrupt torque discontinuities which are particularly large for fields rotating in the $bc$ plane, and whose characteristic shape resembles closely the ones observed in the 3D Kitaev magnet $γ$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$. The search for fractionalization in quantum spin liquids largely relies on their decoupling with the environment. However, the spin-lattice interaction is inevitable in a real setting. While the Majorana fermion evades a strong decay due to the gradient form of spin-lattice coupling, the study of the phonon dynamics may serve as an indirect probe of fractionalization of spin degrees of freedom. Here we propose that the signatures of fractionalization can be seen in the sound attenuation and the Hall viscosity. Despite the fact that both quantities can be related to the imaginary part of the phonon self-energy, their origins are quite different, and the time-reversal symmetry breaking is required for the Hall viscosity. First, we compute the sound attenuation due to a phonon scattering off of a pair of Majorana fermions and show that it is linear in temperature ($\sim T$). We argue that it has a particular angular dependence providing the information about the spin-lattice coupling and the low-energy Majorana fermion spectrum. The observable effects in the absence of time-reversal symmetry are then analyzed. We obtain the phonon Hall viscosity term from the microscopic Hamiltonian with time-reversal symmetry breaking term. Importantly, the Hall viscosity term mixes the longitudinal and transverse phonon modes and renormalize the spectrum in a unique way, which may be probed in spectroscopy measurement.

We present a unified description of the response of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$ to applied magnetic fields along the orthorhombic directions ${\bf a}$, ${\bf b}$ and ${\bf c}$. This description is based on the minimal nearest-neighbor $J$-$K$-$Γ$ model and builds on the idea that the incommensurate counter-rotating order observed experimentally at zero field can be treated as a long-distance twisting of a nearby commensurate order with six spin sublattices. The results reveal that the behavior of the system for ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf a}$, ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf b}$ and ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf c}$ share a number of qualitative features, including: i) a strong intertwining of the modulated, counter-rotating order with a set of uniform orders; ii) the disappearance of the modulated order at a critical field $H^\ast$, whose value is strongly anisotropic with $H_{\bf b}^\ast\!<\!H_{\bf c}^\ast\!\ll\!H_{\bf a}^\ast$; iii) the presence of a robust zigzag phase above $H^\ast$; and iv) the fulfillment of the Bragg peak intensity sum rule. It is noteworthy that the disappearance of the modulated order for ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf c}$ proceeds via a `metamagnetic' first-order transition which does not restore all broken symmetries. This implies the existence of a second finite-$T$ phase transition at higher magnetic fields. We also demonstrate that quantum fluctuations give rise to a significant reduction of the local moments for all directions of the field. The results for the total magnetization for ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf b}$ are consistent with available data and confirm a previous assertion that the system is very close to the highly-frustrated $K$-$Γ$ line in parameter space. Our predictions for the magnetic response for fields along ${\bf a}$ and ${\bf c}$ await experimental verification.

Motivated by the ongoing effort to search for high-resolution signatures of quantum spin liquids, we investigate the temperature dependence of the indirect resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) response for the Kitaev honeycomb model. We find that, as a result of spin fractionalization, the RIXS response changes qualitatively at two well-separated temperature scales, $T_L$ and $T_H$, which correspond to the characteristic energies of the two kinds of fractionalized excitations, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fluxes and Majorana fermions, respectively. While thermally excited $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fluxes at temperature $T_L$ lead to a general broadening and softening of the response, the thermal proliferation of Majorana fermions at temperature $T_H \sim 10 \, T_L$ results in a significant shift of the spectral weight, both in terms of energy and momentum. Due to its exclusively indirect nature, the RIXS process we consider gives rise to a universal magnetic response and, from an experimental perspective, it directly corresponds to the $K$-edge of Ru$^{3+}$ in the Kitaev candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$.

While candidate materials, such as the Kitaev honeycomb ruthenate $α$-RuCl$_3$, show magnetic order at low temperatures $T$, here we demonstrate numerically a dynamical crossover from magnon-like behavior at low $T$ and frequencies $ω$ to long-lived fractionalized fermionic quasiparticles at higher $T$ and $ω$. This crossover is akin to the presence of spinon continua in quasi-1D spin chains. It is further shown to go hand in hand with persistent typicality down to very low $T$. This aspect, which has also been observed in the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet, is a signature of proximate spin liquidity and emergent gauge degrees of freedom more generally, and can be the basis for the numerical study of many finite-$T$ properties of putative spin liquids.

The 5d-electron honeycomb compound H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_3$ [K. Kitagawa $et$ $al.$, Nature 554, 341-345 (2018)] exhibits an apparent quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. In this intercalated spin-orbital compound, a remarkable pile up of low-energy states was experimentally observed in specific heat and nuclear magnetic (NMR) spin relaxation. We show that a bond disordered Kitaev model can naturally account for this phenomenon, suggesting that disorder plays an essential role in its theoretical description. In the exactly soluble Kitaev model, we obtain, via spin fractionalization, a random bipartite hop** problem of Majorana fermions in a random flux background. This has a divergent low-energy density of states (DOS) of the required power-law form $N(E)\propto E^{-ν}$ with a drifting exponent which takes on the value $ν\approx 1/2$ for relatively strong bond disorder. Breaking time reversal symmetry (TRS) removes the divergence of the DOS, as does applying a magnetic field in experiment. We discuss the implication of our scenario for future experiments and its broader implications.

Recent scattering experiments in the 3D Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ have shown that a relatively weak magnetic field along the crystallographic ${\bf b}$-axis drives the system from its incommensurate counter-rotating order to a correlated paramagnet, with a significant uniform `zigzag' component superimposing the magnetization along the field. Here it is shown that the zigzag order is not emerging from its linear coupling to the field (via a staggered, off-diagonal element of the ${\bf g}$-tensor), but from its intertwining with the incommensurate order and the longitudinal magnetization. The emerging picture explains all qualitative experimental findings at zero and finite fields, including the rapid decline of the incommensurate order with field and the so-called intensity sum rule. The latter are shown to be independent signatures of the smallness of the Heisenberg exchange $J$, compared to the Kitaev coupling $K$ and the off-diagonal anisotropy $Γ$. Remarkably, in the regime of interest, the field $H^\ast$ at which the incommensurate component vanishes, depends essentially only on $J$, which allows to extract an estimate of $J\!\simeq\!4K$ from reported measurements of $H^\ast$. We also comment on recent experiments in pressurized $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ and conclude that $J$ decreases with pressure.

Comparing the three types, we show that the Hilbert space of the SO(3) representation is different from the other two by requiring pairing of sites, but it has the advantage over the other two in that no unphysical states are involved. As an example of its application, we present a new alternative solution of the Kitaev honeycomb model. Our new solution involves no unphysical states which enables a systematic calculation of physical observables. Finally, we discuss an extension of the model to a more general exactly soluble $Z_{2}$ gauge theory interacting with complex fermions.

Quantum spin liquids have been at the forefront of correlated electron research ever since their original proposal in 1973, and the realization that they belong to the broader class of intrinsic topological orders, along with the fractional quantum Hall states. According to received wisdom, quantum spin liquids can arise in frustrated magnets with low spin $S$, where strong quantum fluctuations act to destabilize conventional, magnetically ordered states. Here we present a magnet that has a $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid ground state already in the semiclassical, large-$S$ limit. The state has both topological and symmetry related ground state degeneracy, and two types of gaps, a `magnetic flux' gap that scales linearly with $S$ and an `electric charge' gap that drops exponentially in $S$. The magnet is described by the spin-$S$ version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev honeycomb model, which has been the subject of intense studies in correlated electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling, and in optical lattice realizations with ultracold atoms. The results apply to both integer and half-integer spins.

While the non-spin-conserving RIXS responses are dominated by the gauge-flux excitations and reproduce the inelastic-neutron-scattering response, the spin-conserving (SC) RIXS response picks up the Majorana-fermion excitations and detects whether they are gapless at Weyl points, nodal lines, or Fermi surfaces. As a signature of symmetry fractionalization, the SC RIXS response is suppressed around the $Γ$ point. We develop a theory of the dynamical response of a minimal model of quantum spin ice (QSI) by means of inelastic light scattering. In particular, we are interested in the Raman response of the fractionalized U(1) spin liquid realized in the XXZ QSI. We show that the low-energy Raman intensity is dominated by spinon and gauge fluctuations. We find that the Raman response in the QSI state of that model appears only in the $T_{2g}$ polarization channel. We show that the Raman intensity profile displays a broad continuum from the spinons and coupled spinon and gauge fluctuations, and a low-energy peak arising entirely from gauge fluctuations. Both features originate from the exotic interaction between photon and the fractionalized excitations of QSI. Our theoretical results suggest that inelastic Raman scattering can in principle serve as a promising experimental probe of the nature of a U(1) spin liquid in QSI.

We show that the off-diagonal exchange anisotropy drives Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling to a classical spin liquid regime, characterized by an infinite number of ground states and Ising variables living on closed or open strings. Depending on the sign of the anisotropy, quantum fluctuations either fail to lift the degeneracy down to very low temperatures, or select non-collinear magnetic states with unconventional spin correlations. The results apply to all 2D and 3D tri-coordinated materials with bond-directional anisotropy, and provide a consistent interpretation of the suppression of the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism signal reported recently for $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under pressure.

We study the inelastic light scattering response in two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Kitaev spin-liquid models with \ms band structures in the symmetry classes BDI and D leading to protected gapless surface modes. We present a detailed calculation of the resonant Raman/Brillouin scattering vertex relevant to iridate and ruthenate compounds whose low-energy physics is believed to be proximate to these spin-liquid phases. In the symmetry class BDI, we find that while the resonant scattering on thin films can detect the gapless boundary modes of spin liquids, the non-resonant processes do not couple to them. For the symmetry class D, however, we find that the coupling between both types of light-scattering processes and the low-energy surface states is strongly suppressed. Additionally, we describe the effect of weak time-reversal symmetry breaking perturbations on the bulk Raman response of these systems.

We calculate the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) response of the Kitaev honeycomb model, an exactly solvable quantum-spin-liquid model with fractionalized Majorana and flux excitations. We find that the fundamental RIXS channels, the spin-conserving (SC) and the non-spin-conserving (NSC) ones, do not interfere and give completely different responses. SC-RIXS picks up exclusively the Majorana sector with a pronounced momentum dispersion, whereas NSC-RIXS also creates immobile fluxes, thereby rendering the response only weakly momentum dependent, as in the spin structure factor measured by inelastic neutron scattering. RIXS can therefore pick up the fractionalized excitations of the Kitaev spin liquid separately, making it a sensitive probe to detect spin-liquid character in potential material incarnations of the Kitaev honeycomb model.

The magnetic orders in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and $α-$RuCl$_3$, honeycomb systems with strong spin-orbit coupling and correlations, have been recently described by models with the dominant Kitaev interactions. In this work we discuss how the orientation of magnetic order parameter is selected in this class of models. We show that while the order-by-disorder mechanism in the models with solely Kitaev anisotropies always select cubic axes as easy axes for magnetic ordering, the additional effect of other small bond-dependent anisotropies, such as, e.g., $Γ$-terms, lead to a deviation of the order parameter from the cubic directions. We show that both the zigzag ground state and the face-diagonal orientation of magnetic moments in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ can be obtained within the $J_1-K_1-J_2-K_2-J_3$ model in the presence of perturbatively small $Γ$-terms. We also show that the zigzag phase found in the nearest neighbor Kitaev-Heisenberg model, relevant for $α-$RuCl$_3$, has some stability against the $Γ$-term.

Several powerful techniques exist to detect topologically protected surface states of weakly-interacting electronic systems. In contrast, surface modes of strongly interacting systems which do not carry electric charge are much harder to detect. We propose resonant light scattering as a means of probing the chargeless surface modes of interacting quantum spin systems, and illustrate its efficacy by a concrete calculation for the 3D hyperhoneycomb Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase. We show that resonant scattering is required to efficiently couple to this model's sublattice polarized surface modes, comprised of emergent Majorana fermions that result from spin fractionalization. We demonstrate that the low-energy response is dominated by the surface contribution for thin films, allowing identification and characterization of emergent topological band structures.

We calculate the Raman response for the Kitaev spin model on the $\mathcal{H}$-$0$, $\mathcal{H}$-$1$, and $\mathcal{H}$-$\infty$ harmonic honeycomb lattices. We identify several quantitative features in the Raman spectrum that are characteristic of the spin liquid phase. Unlike the dynamical structure factor, which probes both the Majorana spinons and flux excitations that emerge from spin fractionalization, the Raman spectrum in the Kitaev models directly probes a density of states of pairs of fractional, dispersing Majorana spinons. As a consequence, the Raman spectrum in all these models is gapless for sufficiently isotropic couplings, with a low-energy power law that results from the Fermi lines (or points) of the dispersing Majorana spinons. We show that the polarization dependence of the Raman spectrum contains crucial information about the symmetry of the ground state. We also discuss to what extent the features of the Raman response that we find reflect generic properties of the spin liquid phase, and comment on their possible relevance to $α-$, $β-$ and $γ-$Li$_2$IrO$_3$ compounds.

This coupling naturally explains the zigzag ordering (without introducing unrealistically large longer-range Heisenberg exchange terms) and the special entanglement between real and spin space observed recently in Na$_2$IrO$_3$. Moreover, the minimal $K_1$-$K_2$ model that we present here holds the unique property that the classical and quantum phase diagrams and their respective order-by-disorder mechanisms are qualitatively different due to the fundamentally different symmetries of the classical and quantum counterparts.

In this work, we propose a method for calculating the free energy of anisotropic classical spin systems. We use a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation to express the partition function of a generic bilinear super-exchange Hamiltonian in terms of a functional integral over classical time-independent fields. As an example, we consider an anisotropic spin-exchange Hamiltonian on the cubic lattice as is found for compounds with strongly correlated electrons in multiorbital bands and subject to strong spin-orbit interaction. We calculate the contribution of Gaussian spin fluctuations to the free energy. While the mean-field solution of ordered states for such systems usually has full rotational symmetry, we show here that the fluctuations lead to a pinning of the spontaneous magnetization along some preferred direction of the lattice.

We report a global structural distortion in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ using spatially resolved optical second and third harmonic generation rotational anisotropy measurements. A symmetry lowering from an $I4_{1}/acd$ to $I4_{1}/a$ space group is observed both above and below the Néel temperature that arises from a staggered tetragonal distortion of the oxygen octahedra. By studying an effective super-exchange Hamiltonian that accounts for this lowered symmetry, we find that perfect locking between the octahedral rotation and magnetic moment canting angles can persist even in the presence of large non-cubic local distortions. Our results explain the origin of the forbidden Bragg peaks recently observed in neutron diffraction experiments and reconcile the observations of strong tetragonal distortion and perfect magneto-elastic locking in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$.

In this work, we investigate the microscopic nature of the magnetism in honeycomb iridium-based systems by performing a systematic study of how the effective magnetic interactions in these compounds depend on various electronic microscopic parameters. We show that the minimal model describing the magnetism in A$_2$IrO$_3$ includes both isotropic and anisotropic Kitaev-type spin-exchange interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbor Ir ions, and that the magnitude of the Kitaev interaction between next-nearest neighbor Ir magnetic moments is comparable with nearest neighbor interactions. We also find that, while the Heisenberg and the Kitaev interactions between nearest neighbors are correspondingly antiferro- and ferromagnetic, they both change sign for the next-nearest neighbors. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations we examine the magnetic phase diagram of the derived super-exchange model. Zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order is found to occupy a large part of the phase diagram of the model and, for ferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor Heisenberg interaction relevant for Na$_2$IrO$_3$, it can be stabilized even in the absence of third nearest neighbor coupling. Our results suggest that a natural physical origin of the zigzag phase experimentally observed in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ is due to the interplay of the Kitaev anisotropic interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbors.

We examine the influence of the excess of interstitial Fe on the magnetic properties of Fe$_{1+y}$Te compounds. Because in iron chalcogenides the correlations are stronger than in the iron arsenides, we assume in our model that some of the Fe orbitals give rise to localized magnetic moments. These moments interact with each other via exchange interactions as well as phonon-mediated biquadratic interactions that favor a collinear double-stripe state, corresponding to the ordering vectors $\left(\pmπ/2,\pmπ/2\right)$. The remaining Fe orbitals are assumed to be itinerant, giving rise to the first-principle derived Fermi surface displaying nesting features at momenta $\left(π,0\right)/\left(0,π\right)$. Increasing the amount of itinerant electrons due to excess Fe, $y$, leads to changes in the Fermi surface and to the suppression of its nesting properties. As a result, due to the Hund's coupling between the itinerant and localized moments, increasing $y$ leads to modifications in the local moments' exchange interactions via the multi-orbital generalization of the long-range Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. By numerically computing the RKKY corrections and minimizing the resulting effective exchange Hamiltonian, we find, in general, that the excess electrons introduced in the system change the classical magnetic ground state from a double-stripe state to an incommensurate spiral, consistent with the experimental observations. We show that these results can be understood as a result of the suppression of magnetic spectral weight of the itinerant electrons at momenta $\left(π,0\right)/\left(0,π\right)$, combined with the transfer of broad magnetic spectral weight from large to small momenta, promoted by the introduction of excess Fe.

We study theoretically the Raman scattering response $I(ω)$ in the gapless quantum spin liquid phase of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The dominant polarization-independent contribution $I_K (ω)$ reflects the density of states of the emergent Majorana fermions in the ground-state flux-sector. The integrability-breaking Heisenberg exchange generates a second contribution, whose dominant part $I_H (ω)$ has the form of a quantum quench corresponding to an abrupt insertion of four $Z_2$ gauge fluxes. This results in a weakly polarization dependent response with a sharp peak at the energy of the flux excitation accompanied by broad features, which can be related to Majorana fermions in the presence of the perturbed gauge field. We discuss the experimental situation and explore more generally the influence of integrability breaking for Kitaev spin liquid response functions.
