The ordered structure of binary alloy nanoparticles determines their magnetic and catalytic characteristics. In the alloys after annealing, one of the components preferentially segregates on the surface to reduce surface energy. This surface segregation has been known as a factor in the construction of an ordered phase near the surface. However, the segregation-induced ordering has not been observed for nanoparticles. Here, platinum@cobalt (Pt@Co) core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized, and their structural changes after annealing at 600°C, 700°C, and 800°C for 3 hours were observed by a scanning transmission electron microscope. We discovered an L10-PtCo structure near the surface at 700°C, which was unexpected given the initial Pt:Co ratio of about 4:1. The L10-PtCo structure was considered to form due to surface segregation of Pt atoms and diffusion insufficient to mix Pt and Co atoms in the particle overall because the structure did not form at 600°C and 800°C.

We determine the anisotropic dielectric functions of rhombohedral $α$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ by far-infrared and infrared generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry and derive all transverse optical and longitudinal optical phonon mode frequencies and broadening parameters. We also determine the high frequency and static dielectric constants. We perform density functional theory computations and determine the phonon dispersion for all branches in the Brillouin zone, and we derive all phonon mode parameters at the Brillouin zone center including Raman-active, infrared-active, and silent modes. Excellent agreement is obtained between our experimental and computation results as well as among all previously reported partial information from experiment and theory. We also compute the same information for $α$-Al$_2$O$_3$, the binary parent compound for the emerging alloy of $α$-(Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$)$_2$O$_3$, and use results from previous investigations [Schubert, Tiwald, and Herzinger, Phys. Rev. B 61, 8187 (2000)] to compare all properties among the two isostructural compounds. From both experimental and theoretical investigations we compute the frequency shifts of all modes between the two compounds. Additionally, we calculate overlap parameters between phonon mode eigenvectors and discuss the possible evolution of all phonon modes into the ternary alloy system and whether modes may form single mode or more complex mode behaviors.

Metal atomic chains have been reported to change their electronic or magnetic properties by slight mechanical stimulus. However, the mechanical response has been veiled because of lack of information on the bond nature. Here, we clarify the bond nature in platinum (Pt) monatomic chains by our developed in-situ transmission electron microscope method. The stiffness is measured with sub N/m precision by quartz length-extension resonator. The bond stiffnesses at the middle of the chain and at the connecting to the base are estimated to be 25 and 23 N/m, respectively, which are higher than the bulk counterpart. Interestingly, the bond length of 0.25 nm is found to be elastically stretched to 0.31 nm, corresponding to 24% in strain. Such peculiar bond nature could be explained by a novel concept of "string tension". This study is a milestone that will significantly change the way we think about atomic bonds in one-dimensional substance.

The local variation in inter-atomic distances, or local lattice strain often influences significantly material properties of nanoparticles. Strain measurement with ~1% precision is provided by recent atomic-resolution electron microscopy. However, the precision has been limited by noises in the experimental data. Here, we have applied one of the data-driven analyses, Gaussian process regression to predict true form of strain. The precision has been improved to be sub-percent of 0.2 % and more for detection of local strain. Rod-shaped nanoparticles have been revealed to contain characteristic lattice expansion ~+0.6 % around the subsurface cap tip area. The experimental results are reproduced by molecular dynamics simulations of the corresponding shaped atomic models. The strain peculiar to nanorods are explained in terms of curvature-dependent non-uniform surface stress due to shape anisotropy. The present results bring a hint to nanoscale engineering to optimize the strain in nanoparticles by shape control.

Magnetization, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements are carried out to clarify the low-energy excitations for the S = 1/2 polyhedral clusters {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} and {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$}. The clusters provide unique model systems of Kagomé network on a quasi-sphere. The linear field variation of magnetization at low temperatures indicates that the ground state is singlet for both clusters. The temperature and the magnetic field dependence of specific heat shows a distinct difference between two clusters with differing structural symmetries. In {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with I$_h$ symmetry, the existence of the several tens of low-energy singlet excited states below the lowest triplet excited state is revealed. The specific heat of the slightly distorted {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with D$_{5h}$ symmetry leads to a drastic decrease of the singlet contribution, which is consistent with the partial lifting of the frustration and the decrease of degenerated low-energy states. The singlet excitation existence is confirmed further by the temperature dependence of the ESR spectra. Comprehensive experimental studies have demonstrated unique low-energy excitations of the spherical Kagomé networks and their sensitivity to the cluster symmetry.

We demonstrate a close connection between observed field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and quantum critical fluctuation (QCF) in the Zn7%-doped heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5. Magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity at low temperatures all show the presence of new field-induced AFM order under the magnetic field B of 5-10 T, whose order parameter is clearly distinguished from the low-field AFM phase observed for B < 5 T and the superconducting phase for B < 3 T. The 4f electronic specific heat divided by the temperature, C_e/T, exhibits -lnT dependence at B~10 T (= B_0), and furthermore, the C_e/T data for B >= B_0 are well scaled by the logarithmic function of B and T: ln[(B-B_0)/T^{2.7}]. These features are quite similar to the scaling behavior found in pure CeCoIn5, strongly suggesting that the field-induced QCF in pure CeCoIn5 originates from the hidden AFM order parameter equivalent to high-field AFM order in Zn7%-doped CeCoIn5.

However, the growth mechanism remains controversial between diffusion growth mechanism and vapor-solid (VS) growth mechanism. In this study, we investigated the morphology and atomic structure of the CuO nanowires by electron microscopes to clarify the growth mechanism. We found that they were grown with the annealing ambient during the cooling process and there were screw dislocations in the nanowires. These features indicate that the VS growth mechanism is applicable to explain the growth of the CuO nanowires. In addition, the kinetic consideration also supports the VS growth mechanism.

In Mott insulators, the strong electron-electron Coulomb repulsion prevents metallicity and charge excitations are gapped. In dimensions greater than one, their spins are usually ordered antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Geometrical frustrations can destroy this long-range order, leading to exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. However, their magnetic ground states have been a long-standing mystery. Here we show that a QSL state in the organic Mott insulator EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ with two-dimensional triangular lattice has Pauli-paramagnetic-like low-energy excitations, which are a hallmark of itinerant fermions. Our torque magnetometry down to low temperatures (30 mK) up to high fields (32 T) reveal distinct residual paramagnetic susceptibility comparable to that in a half-filled two-dimensional metal. This demonstrates that the system is in a magnetically gapless ground state, a critical state with infinite magnetic correlation length. Moreover, our results are robust against deuteration, pointing toward the emergence of an extended `quantum critical phase', in which low-energy spin excitations behave as in paramagnetic metals with Fermi surface, despite the frozen charge degree of freedom.

In this article we demonstrate the usefulness of ESR measurements since the temperature dependence of the ESR intensity can discriminate between impurity and molecular contributions. We report on refined experimental results concerning the low-temperature specific heat of the frustrated spin tube material [(CuCl2tachH)3Cl]Cl2. This substance turns out to be an unusually perfect spin tube system which allows to study the physics of quasi-one dimensional antiferromagnetic structures in rather general terms. An analysis of the specific heat data demonstrates that at low enough temperatures the system exhibits a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior corresponding to an effective spin-3/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with short-range exchange interactions. On the other hand, at somewhat elevated temperatures the composite spin structure of the chain is revealed through a Schottky-type peak in the specific heat located around 2 K. We argue that the dominating contribution to the peak originates from gapped magnon-type excitations related to the internal degrees of freedom of the rung spins.

We report magnetization, susceptibility, electrical transport, and electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of single crystals of beta-AgNpO2(SeO3). Here the valence of the Np sites is expected to be Np(V). We observe a magnetic transition below 8 K, where the transition temperature is dependent on the effective magnetic moment. Although the transition appears to be ferromagnetic, no hysteresis is seen in the magnetization, and the saturation moment above 0.1 T is found to be about 60% of the free NpO2 ion moment. The decrease in the Np moments determined experimentally is thought to arise from crystal field and spin-orbit effects. Although Np(V) is expected to be ESR silent, we observe temperature dependent ESR spectra at ~44 GHz (for fields above the saturation field) that show slight shifts in the g-factor and line width at low temperatures. Our results provide evidence that both Np(V) and Np(IV) valences are present, where the latter may be a minority population. The crystals, although dark in appearance, are electrically insulating (rho > 10^10 Ohm-cm) at room temperature.

Submillimeter and millimeter wave electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements of the pi-d correlated organic conductor lambda-(BETS)2Fe0.6Ga0.4Cl4 have been performed. Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) has been observed in the insulating antiferromagnetic phase, and its frequency-field dependence can be reproduced by the biaxial anisotropic AFMR theory. We find that in this alloy system, the easy-axis is near the b-axis, unlike previous results for the pure lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 salts where it is closer to the c*-axis. We have also observed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in the metallic phase at higher fields where the g-value is shown to be temperature and frequency dependent for field applied along the c*-axis. This behavior indicates the existence of strong pi-d interaction. Our measurements further show the magnetic anisotropy associated with the anions (the D term in the spin Hamiltonian) is |D|~0.11 cm-1.

ESR measurements for the frequency/temperature domain 60-450 GHz/ 1.8-300 K and specific heat data obtained for the interval 6-20 K show that insertion of 1% of Fe completely destroy both spin-Peierls and antiferromagnetic orders. Dam** of long-range magnetic order is accompanied by onset at T<20 K of power asymptotics for magnetic susceptibility chi~T^-alpha and magnetic part of specific heat cm~T^(1-alpha), with the index alpha=0.35-0.37. This effect is characteristic to the limit of strong disorder for doped CuGeO3 and may reflect formation of the Griffiths phase at low temperatures in CuGeO3:Fe.
