Thermoelectric materials can achieve direct energy conversion between electricity and heat, thus can be applied to waste heat harvesting and solid-state cooling. The discovery of new thermoelectric materials is mainly based on experiments and first-principles calculations. However, these methods are usually expensive and time-consuming. Recently, the prediction of properties via machine learning has emerged as a popular method in materials science. Herein, we firstly did first-principles high-throughput calculations for a large number of chalcogenides and built a thermoelectric database containing 796 compounds. Many novel and promising thermoelectric materials were discovered. Then, we trained four ensemble learning models and two deep learning models to distinguish the promising thermoelectric materials from the others for n type and p type do**, respectively. All the presented models achieve classification accuracy higher than 85% and area under the curve (AUC) higher than 0.9. Especially, the M3GNet model for n type data achieve accuracy, precision and recall all higher than 90%. Our works demonstrate a very efficient way of combining machine learning prediction and first-principles high-throughput calculations together to accelerate the discovery of advanced thermoelectric materials.

Preservation of CsH$_7$ at near ambient conditions, confirmed both experimentally and theoretically, represents a significant advance in the stabilization of hydrogen-rich compounds. In addition, we synthesized two crystal modifications of RbH$_{9-x}$ with pseudo hexagonal and pseudo tetragonal structures identified by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements. Both phases are stable at 8-10 GPa. This is an unprecedented low stabilization pressure for polyhydrides. These discoveries open up possibilities for modifying existing hydrogen storage materials to increase their efficiency.

Calculations of elastic and mechanical characteristics of non-crystalline solids are challenging due to high computation cost of $ab$ $initio$ methods and low accuracy of empirical potentials. We propose a computational technique towards efficient calculations of mechanical properties of polycrystals, composites, and multi-phase systems from atomistic simulation with high accuracy and reasonable computational cost. It is based on using actively learned machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) trained on a local fragments of the polycrystalline system for which forces, stresses and energies are computed by using $ab$ $initio$ calculations. Developed approach is used for calculation the dependence of elastic moduli of polycrystalline diamond on the grain size. This technique allows one to perform large-scale calculations of mechanical properties of complex solids of various compositions and structures with high accuracy making the transition from ideal (single crystal) systems to more realistic ones.

Here we report the investigation of the La-Mg-H ternary system using the evolutionary algorithm USPEX at pressures on the range 150-300 GPa. Several ternary superconducting hydrides were found, including thermodynamically stable $P6/mmm$-LaMg$_{3}$H$_{28}$ with $T_{\mathrm{C}}=164$ K at 200 GPa, $P/2m$-LaMgH$_8$, $C2/m$-La$_2$MgH$_{12}$ and $P2/m$-La$_3$MgH$_{16}$. In addition, novel binary hydrides were predicted to be stable at various pressures, such as $Cm$-Mg$_6$H$_{11}$, $P1$-MgH$_{26}$, $Fmm2$-MgH$_{30}$, $P1$-MgH$_{38}$ and $R\overline{3}m$-LaH$_{13}$. We also report several novel low-enthalpy metastable phases, both ternary and binary ones. Finally, we demonstrate important methods of exploring very large chemical spaces and show how they can improve crystal structure prediction.

This value is eight times higher than that of the synthesized GIC NaC2 and possesses the highest Tc among available GICs. The remarkable superconductivity of GIC NaC4 mainly arises from the coupling of π electrons in graphene with the low-frequency vibrations involving both Na and C atoms. These findings suggest that Na-GICs may hold great promise as high-Tc superconductors.

The formation of technetium hydrides is also confirmed by the emergence of a new reflective band at 450-600 nm in the reflectance spectra of TcH$_x$ samples synthesized at 45 GPa. On the basis of the theoretical analysis, we proposed crystal structures for the TcH$_{0.45 \pm 0.05}$ (Tc$_{16}$H$_7$) and TcH$_{0.75 \pm 0.05}$ (Tc$_4$H$_3$) phases previously obtained at 1-2 GPa. The calculations of the electron-phonon interaction show that technetium hydrides TcH$_{1+x}$ do not possess superconducting properties due to the low electron-phonon interaction parameter ($λ\sim 0.23$).

In contrast, lithium (Li) is one of the most reactive metals at zero pressure, while its cubic high-pressure phase (Fd-3m) is a weak metallic electride above 475 GPa. Strikingly, a stable compound of Li5He2 (R-3m) was formed by mixing Fd-3m Li with P63/mmc He above 700 GPa. The presence of helium promotes the lattice transformation from Fd-3m Li to Pm-3m Li, and tuns the three-dimensional distributed interstitial electrons into the mixture of zero- and two-dimensional anionic electrons. This significantly increases the degree of metallization at the Fermi level, consequently, the coupling of conductive anionic electrons with the Li-dominated vibrations is the key factor to the formation of superconducting electride Li5He2 with a transition temperature up to 26 K, dynamically stable to pressures down to 210 GPa.

Compared with other deep-UV materials known to date, PNO possesses the strongest second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient (about 6 times that of KH$_2$PO$_4$ (KDP)). Moreover, its three-dimensional connectivity endows it with good mechanical and thermal properties. Therefore, PNO should be a new option for non-$π$-conjugated deep-UV NLO materials.

Over the past six years (2015-2021), many superconducting hydrides with critical temperatures $T_{C}$ up to 250 K, which are currently record highs, have been discovered. Now we can already say that a special field of superconductivity has developed. This is hydride superconductivity at ultrahigh pressures. For the most part, the properties of superhydrides are well described by the Migdal-Eliashberg theory of strong electron-phonon interaction, especially when anharmonicity of phonons is taken into account. The isotope effect, the effect of the magnetic field (up to 60-70 T) on the critical temperature and critical current in the hydride samples, the dependence of $T_{C}$ on the pressure and degree of do** were investigated. The divergences between the theory and experiment are of interest, especially in the field of phase stability and in the behavior of the upper critical magnetic fields at low temperatures. This article presents a retrospective analysis of data of 2015-2021 and describes promising directions for future research of hydride superconductivity.

Covalent and ionic polyhydrides have become the two main camps in searching for the high-temperature superconductors under pressure. They have been considered as important platforms for exploring ternary or multiple hydrides in order to further increase the Tc or decrease the stabilization pressure. In this work, we successfully synthesized ternary hexagonal La-Ce polyhydrides stable in the pressure range of 95-130 GPa by laser-heating the La-Ce alloy (initial ratio La:Ce=2.5-3.5) in ammonia borane. Superconductivity at 176 K was strikingly preserved to about 100 GPa. The extrapolated upper critical field Hc2(0) reached 216 T at 100 GPa, the highest value among the synthesized polyhydrides. We also performed the contrast experiments and stabilized binary high-temperature superconducting LaHx with Tc-103 K at 78 GPa. In the pressure range of 95-130 GPa, the ternary hexagonal La-Ce-H system exhibits higher Tc than the binary La-H system, with the maximum difference of 100 K, and the compounds of both systems were synthesized at the same pressure and temperature conditions. These results clearly indicate that the discovered La-Ce-H system not only enriches the high-temperature superconducting hydrides but also realizes high-Tc at moderate pressures.

The NaXe belongs to a well-known cubic CsCl structure type. The NaXe$_4$'s structure is common in amphiboles, whereas the NaXe$_3$ has a unique structure, analogous to the "post-perovskite" orthorhombic CaIrO$_3$-type structure with Ir atoms removed. This is the first time that a cation-vacant version of the CaIrO$_3$ is found in any compound. NaXe, NaXe$_3$ and NaXe$_4$ are found to be metallic.

Polyhydrides are a novel class of superconducting materials with extremely high critical parameters, which is very promising for applications. On the other hand, complete experimental study of the magnetic phase diagram for the best so far known superconductor, lanthanum decahydride LaH$_{10}$, encounters a serious complication because of the large upper critical magnetic field $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$(0), exceeding 120-160 T. Partial replacement of La atoms by magnetic Nd atoms results in a decrease of the upper critical field, which makes it attainable for existing pulse magnets. We found that addition of neodymium leads to significant suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$: each atomic % of Nd causes decrease in $\textit{T}$$_{C}$ by 10-11 K. Using strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T, we constructed the magnetic phase diagram of the ternary (La,Nd)H$_{10}$ superhydride, which appears to be surprisingly linear with $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$ $\propto$ |$\textit{T}$ - $\textit{T}$$_C$|. The pronounced suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$ by magnetic Nd atoms and the robustness of $\textit{T}$$_C$ with respect to nonmagnetic impurities (e.g., Y, Al, C) under Anderson's theorem indicate the isotropic ($\textit{s}$-wave) character of conventional electron-phonon pairing in the synthesized superhydrides.

The origin of water on the Earth is a long-standing mystery, requiring a comprehensive search for hydrous compounds, stable at conditions of the deep Earth and made of Earth-abundant elements. Previous studies usually focused on the current range of pressure-temperature conditions in the Earth's mantle and ignored a possible difference in the past, such as the stage of the core-mantle separation. Here, using ab initio evolutionary structure prediction, we find that only two magnesium hydrosilicate phases are stable at megabar pressures, $α$-Mg$_2$SiO$_5$H$_2$ and $β$-Mg$_2$SiO$_5$H$_2$, stable at 262-338 GPa and >338 GPa,respectively (all these pressures now lie within the Earth's iron core). Both are superionic conductors with quasi-one-dimensional proton diffusion at relevant conditions. In the first 30 million years of Earth's history, before the Earth's core was formed, these must have existed in the Earth, hosting much of Earth's water. As dense iron alloys segregated to form the Earth's core, Mg$_2$SiO$_5$H$_2$ phases decomposed and released water. Thus, now-extinct Mg$_2$SiO$_5$H$_2$ phases have likely contributed in a major way to the evolution of our planet.

Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed polyhydrides, in this work we demonstrate that small (4 atom %) do** of molecular hydrogen by strontium leads to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to about 200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr-H system at 56-180 GPa, we observed the formation of several previously unknown compounds: C2/m-Sr$_3$H$_{13}$, pseudocubic SrH$_6$, SrH$_9$ with cubic F-43m Sr sublattice, and pseudotetragonal P1-SrH$_{22}$, the metal hydride with the highest hydrogen content discovered so far. Unlike Ca and Y, strontium forms molecular semiconducting polyhydrides, whereas calcium and yttrium polyhydrides are high-Tc superconductors with an atomic H sublattice. The latter phase, SrH$_{22}$ or Sr$_{0.04}$H$_{0.96}$, may be considered as a convenient model of the consistent bandgap closure and metallization of hydrogen. Using the impedance measurements in diamond anvil cells at 300-440 K, we estimated the direct bandgap of the Pm-3n-like compound P1-SrH$_6$ to be 0.44-0.51 eV at 150 GPa, and its metallization pressure to be 220 GPa. Together with the machine learning interatomic potentials, the impedance spectroscopy allowed us to estimate the diffusion coefficients of hydrogen D$_H$ = 1.0-2.8 E-10 m$^2$/s in SrH$_6$ and 1.2-2.1 E-9 m$^2$/s in P1-SrH$_{22}$ at 500-600 K.

We have performed a combined experimental and theoretical study of ethane and methane at high pressures up to 120 GPa at 300 K using x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy and the USPEX ab-initio evolutionary structural search algorithm, respectively. For ethane, we have determined the crystallization point, for room temperature, at 2.7 GPa and also the low pressure crystal structure (Phase A). This crystal structure is orientationally disordered (plastic phase) and deviates from the known crystal structures for ethane at low temperatures. Moreover, a pressure induced phase transition has been identified, for the first time, at 13.6 GPa to a monoclinic phase B, the structure of which is solved based on a good agreement of the experimental results and theoretical predictions. For methane, our XRD measurements are in agreement with the previously reported high-pressure structures and EOS. We have determined the equations of state of ethane and methane, which provides a solid basis for the discussion of their relative stability at high pressures.

The electronic and magnetic structure, including the Heisenberg model exchange interaction parameters, was explored for the recently proposed novel cuprate Cu$_2$F$_5$. Using the DFT+U calculation, it is shown that the compound is formed by two types of copper ions with $d^9$ and $d^8$ electronic configurations. We have found a very stable antiferromagnetic ordering with strong anisotropy of exchange interaction that results in the appearance of an unusual 2D-magnetism: within the (100)-plane the exchange between the S=1 and S=1/2 Cu ions has almost the same strength as between the two S=1 ions. The interplane magnetic interaction is five times weaker than the in-plane one.

Grain boundaries (GBs) and interfaces in polycrystalline materials are significant research subjects in the field of materials science. Despite a more than 50-year history of their study, there are still many open questions. The main challenge in studying interfacial structures is the extreme complexity of their experimental and theoretical observation and description. The presence of phase-like states at grain boundaries called complexions requires even more effort in their study. Here, we demonstrate the effect of grain boundaries on the properties of polycrystalline minerals on the example of the $Σ$5[310](001) grain boundary in periclase (MgO). Using the combination of extended evolutionary algorithm USPEX and modern machine-learning interatomic potentials, we explore the configuration space of the specified grain boundary and predict its possible phase-like states. In addition to the widely studied CSL-type structure, we found several stable GB complexions with various atomic densities at the boundary plane. Analysis of grain boundary excess volume of the structures revealed the successive stages of GB failure under the tensile applied in the normal direction of the boundary plane. Our results demonstrate that interfacial chemistry and structural diversity can be surprisingly rich even in seemingly simple and thoroughly investigated materials. The phenomena we observe here are not specific to MgO and should be general.

Today the study of two-dimensional (2D) materials has become one of the key objectives of materials science. Unlike their three-dimensional counterparts, 2D materials can simultaneously demonstrate unique transport and mechanical properties due to their dimensionality and quantum size effect. In their fabrication and application, 2D materials are usually located on top of the substrate or combined into heterostructures, which makes their structures and properties strongly depend on the nature and quality of the environment. Here, we present a novel method for studying the atomic structures of two-dimensional materials and epitaxial thin films on arbitrary substrates. The method can predict successful stages of epitaxial growth and the regions of stability of each atomic configuration with experimental parameters of interest. We demonstrate the performance of our methodology in the prediction of the atomic structure of MoS2 on Al2O3 (0001) substrate. The method is also applied to study the CVD growth of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride on Cu (111) substrates. In both cases, stable monolayer and multilayer structures were found. The stability of all the structures in terms of partial pressures of precursors and temperature of growth is predicted within the ab initio thermodynamics approach.

Crystal structure prediction is a central problem of theoretical crystallography and materials science, which until mid-2000s was considered intractable. Several methods, based on either energy landscape exploration$^{1,2}$ or, more commonly, global optimization$^{3-8}$, largely solved this problem and enabled fully non-empirical computational materials discovery$^{9,10}$. A major shortcoming is that, to avoid expensive calculations of the entropy, crystal structure prediction was done at zero Kelvin and searched for the global minimum of the enthalpy, rather than free energy. As a consequence, high-temperature phases (especially those which are not quenchable to zero temperature) could be missed. Here we develop an accurate and affordable solution, enabling crystal structure prediction at finite temperatures. Structure relaxation and fully anharmonic free energy calculations are done by molecular dynamics with a force field (which can be anything from a parametric force field for simpler cases to a trained on-the-fly machine learning interatomic potential), the errors of which are corrected using thermodynamic perturbation theory to yield accurate ab initio results. We test the accuracy of this method on metals (probing the P-T phase diagram of Al and Fe), a refractory intermetallide (WB), and a significantly ionic ceramic compound (Earth-forming silicate MgSiO3 at pressures and temperatures of the Earth's lower mantle). We find that the hcp-phase of aluminum has a wider stability field than previously thought, and the temperature-induced transition $α$-$β$ in WB occurs at 2789 K. It is also found that iron has hcp structure at conditions of the Earth's inner core, and the much debated (and important for constraining Earth's thermal structure) Clapeyron slope of the post-perovskite phase transition in MgSiO3 is 5.88 MPa/K.

The discoveries of high-temperature superconductivity in H3S and LaH10 have excited the search for superconductivity in compressed hydrides. In contrast to rapidly expanding theoretical studies, high-pressure experiments on hydride superconductors are expensive and technically challenging. Here we experimentally discover superconductivity in two new phases,Fm-3m-CeH10 (SC-I phase) and P63/mmc-CeH9 (SC-II phase) at pressures that are much lower (<100 GPa) than those needed to stabilize other polyhydride superconductors. Superconductivity was evidenced by a sharp drop of the electrical resistance to zero, and by the decrease of the critical temperature in deuterated samples and in an external magnetic field. SC-I has Tc=115 K at 95 GPa, showing expected decrease on further compression due to decrease of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) coefficient λ (from 2.0 at 100 GPa to 0.8 at 200 GPa). SC-II has Tc = 57 K at 88 GPa, rapidly increasing to a maximum Tc ~100 K at 130 GPa, and then decreasing on further compression. This maximum of Tc is due to a maximum of λ at the phase transition from P63/mmc-CeH9 into a symmetry-broken modification C2/c-CeH9. The pressure-temperature conditions of synthesis affect the actual hydrogen content, and the actual value of Tc. Anomalously low pressures of stability of cerium superhydrides make them appealing for studies of superhydrides and for designing new superhydrides with even lower pressures of stability.

We conducted a joint experimental-theoretical investigation of the high-pressure chemistry of europium polyhydrides at pressures of 86-130 GPa. We discovered several novel magnetic Eu superhydrides stabilized by anharmonic effects: cubic $EuH_{9}$, hexagonal $EuH_{9}$, and an unexpected cubic (Pm-3n) clathrate phase, $Eu_{8}H_{46}$. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that cubic $EuH_{9}$ has antiferromagnetic ordering with T(Neel) up to 24 K, whereas hexagonal $EuH_{9}$ and Pm-3n-$Eu_{8}H_{46}$ possess ferromagnetic ordering with T(Curie) = 137 and 336 K, respectively. The electron-phonon interaction is weak in all studied europium hydrides, and their magnetic ordering excludes s-wave superconductivity, except, perhaps, for distorted pseudohexagonal $EuH_{9}$. The equations of state predicted within the DFT+U approach (the Hubbard corrections were found within linear response theory) are in close agreement with the experimental data. This work shows the great influence of the atomic radius on symmetry-breaking distortions of the crystal structures of superhydrides and on their thermodynamic stability.

This is one of the first examples of ternary high-$T_{C}$ superconducting hydrides. Our experiments show that a part of the atoms in the structures of recently discovered ${Im3m}$-$YH_{6}$ and ${Fm3m}$-$LaH_{10}$ can be replaced with lanthanum (~70 %) and yttrium (~25 %), respectively, with a formation of unique ternary superhydrides containing incorporated $La@H_{24}$ and $Y@H_{32}$ which are specific for ${Im3m}$-$LaH_{6}$ and ${Fm3m}$-$YH_{10}$. Ternary La-Y hydrides were obtained at pressures of 170-196 GPa via the laser heating of $P6_{3}$${/mmc}$ lanthanum-yttrium alloys in the ammonia borane medium at temperatures above 2000 K. A novel tetragonal $(La,Y)H_{4}$ was discovered as an impurity phase in synthesized cubic $(La,Y)H_{6}$. The current-voltage measurements show that the critical current density $J_{C}$ in $(La,Y)H_{10}$ may exceed $2500 A/mm^{2}$ at 4.2 K, which is comparable with that for commercial superconducting wires such as ${NbTi}$, $Nb_{3}$${Sn}$. Hydrides that are unstable in a pure form may nevertheless be stabilized at relatively low pressures in solid solutions with superhydrides having the same structure.

C-H-N-O system is central for organic chemistry and biochemistry, and plays a major role in planetary science (dominating the composition of "ice giants" Uranus and Neptune). The inexhaustible chemical diversity of this system at normal conditions explains it as the basis of all known life, but the chemistry of this system at high pressures and temperatures of planetary interiors is poorly known. Using ab initio evolutionary algorithm USPEX, we performed an extensive study of the phase diagram of the C-H-N-O system at pressures of 50, 200, and 400 GPa and temperatures up to 3000 K. Eight novel thermodynamically stable phases were predicted, including quaternary polymeric crystal C2H2N2O2 and several new N-O and H-N-O compounds. We describe the main patterns of changes in the chemistry of the C-H-N-O system under pressure and confirm that diamond should be formed at conditions of the middle-ice layers of Uranus and Neptune. We also provide the detailed CH4-NH3-H2O phase diagrams at high pressures, which are important for a further improvement of the models of ice giants - and point out that current models are clearly deficient. In particular, in existing models Uranus and Neptune are presented to have identical composition, nearly identical pressure-temperature profiles, and a single convecting middle layer ("mantle") made of a mixture H2O : CH4 : NH3 = 56.5 : 32.5 : 11. Here we provide new insights shedding light into the difference of heat flows from Uranus and Neptune, which require them to have different compositions, pressure-temperature conditions, and a more complex internal structure.

We showed that some or all of Cu 3+ ions can be reduced to Cu 2+ by electron do**, as in the well known KCuF3. Significant similarities between the electronic structures calculated in the framework of DFT+U suggest that doped CuF3 and Cu2F5 may exhibit high-temperature superconductivity with the same mechanism as in cuprates.

Variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) emerged as a first practical algorithm for near-term quantum computers. Its success largely relies on the chosen variational ansatz, corresponding to a quantum circuit that prepares an approximate ground state of a Hamiltonian. Typically, it either aims to achieve high representation accuracy (at the expense of circuit depth), or uses a shallow circuit sacrificing the convergence to the exact ground state energy. Here, we propose the approach which can combine both low depth and improved precision, capitalizing on a genetically-improved ansatz for hardware-efficient VQE. Our solution, the multiobjective genetic variational quantum eigensolver (MoG-VQE), relies on multiobjective Pareto optimization, where topology of the variational ansatz is optimized using the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). For each circuit topology, we optimize angles of single-qubit rotations using covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) -- a derivative-free approach known to perform well for noisy black-box optimization. Our protocol allows preparing circuits that simultaneously offer high performance in terms of obtained energy precision and the number of two-qubit gates, thus trying to reach Pareto-optimal solutions. Tested for various molecules (H$_2$, H$_4$, H$_6$, BeH$_2$, LiH), we observe nearly ten-fold reduction in the two-qubit gate counts as compared to the standard hardware-efficient ansatz. For 12-qubit LiH Hamiltonian this allows reaching chemical precision already at 12 CNOTs. Consequently, the algorithm shall lead to significant growth of the ground state fidelity for near-term devices.

This work clarifies the physical meaning of Mendeleev numbers, which was earlier tabulated by Pettifor. We compare our proposed sequence of elements with alternative sequences formed by different Mendeleev numbers using the data for hardness, magnetization, enthalpy of formation, and atomization energy. Using in situ generation of hydrogen from NH3BH3, we synthesized previously unknown superhydride BaH12 with a pseudocubic (fcc) Ba sublattice, which was observed in a wide range of pressures from 75 to 173 GPa in four independent experiments. DFT calculations indicate a close agreement between the theoretical and experimental equations of state. In addition to BaH12, we identified previously known P6/mmm BaH2 and possibly BaH10 and BaH6 as impurities in the samples. Ab initio calculations show that newly discovered semimetallic BaH12 contains H2, H3 molecular units and detached H12 chains. Barium dodecahydride is a unique molecular hydride with metallic conductivity which demonstrates a superconducting transition around 20 K at 140 GPa in agreement with calculations (19-32 K). The interpretation of the multiphase XRD data was possible thanks to the development of new Python scripts for postprocessing the results of evolutionary searches. These scripts help quickly identify the theoretical structures that explain the experimental data in the best way, among thousands of candidates.

Collapse modes in compressed simple cubic (SC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) periodic arrangements of elastic frictionless beads were studied numerically using the discrete element method. Under pure hydrostatic compression, the SC arrangement tends to transform into a defective hexagonal close-packed or amorphous structure. The BCC assembly exhibits several modes of collapse, one of which, identified as cI16 structure, is consistent with the behavior of BCC metals Li and Na under high pressure. The presence of a deviatoric stress leads to the transformation of the BCC structure into face-centered cubic (FCC) one via the Bain path. The observed effects provide important insights on the origins of mechanical behavior of atomic systems, while the elastic spheres model used in our work can become a useful paradigm, expanding the capabilities of a hard sphere model widely used in many branches of science.

The presence of helium not only greatly enhances structural diversity of nitrogen solids, but also tremendously lowers the formation pressure of nitrogen salt. The unique nitrogen framework of (HeN$_{20}$)$^{δ+}$N$_{2}$$^{δ-}$ may be quenchable to ambient pressure even after removing helium. The recent isolation of two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials has uncovered rich physics that often differs from the magnetic behaviour of their bulk counterparts. However, the microscopic details of fundamental processes such as the initial magnetization or domain reversal, which govern the magnetic hysteresis, remain largely unknown in the ultrathin limit. Here we employ a widefield nitrogen-vacancy (NV) microscope to directly image these processes in few-layer flakes of magnetic semiconductor vanadium triiodide (VI$_3$). We observe complete and abrupt switching of most flakes at fields $H_c\approx0.5-1$ T (at 5 K) independent of thickness down to two atomic layers, with no intermediate partially-reversed state. The coercive field decreases as the temperature approaches the Curie temperature ($T_c\approx50$ K), however, the switching remains abrupt. We then image the initial magnetization process, which reveals thickness-dependent domain wall depinning fields well below $H_c$. These results point to ultrathin VI$_3$ being a nucleation-type hard ferromagnet, where the coercive field is set by the anisotropy-limited domain wall nucleation field. This work illustrates the power of widefield NV microscopy to investigate magnetization processes in van der Waals ferromagnets, which could be used to elucidate the origin of the hard ferromagnetic properties of other materials and explore field- and current-driven domain wall dynamics.

Graphite and diamond are two well-known allotropes of carbon with distinct physical properties due to different atomic connectivity. Graphite has a layered structure in which the honeycomb carbon sheets can easily glide, while atoms in diamond are strongly bonded in all three dimensions. The transition from graphite to diamond has been a central subject in physical science. One way to turn graphite into diamond is to apply the high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) conditions. However, atomistic mechanism of this transition is still under debate. From a series of large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we report a mechanism that the diamond nuclei originate at the graphite grain boundaries and propagate in two preferred directions. In addition to the widely accepted [001] direction, we found that the growth along [120] direction of graphite is even faster. In this scenario, cubic diamond (CD) is the kinetically favorable product, while hexagonal diamond (HD) would appear as minor amounts of twinning structures in two main directions. Following the crystallographic orientation relationship, the coherent interface t-(100)gr//(11-1)cd + [010]gr//[1-10]cd was also confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) experiment. The proposed phase transition mechanism does not only reconcile the longstanding debate regarding the role of HD in graphite-diamond transition, but also yields the atomistic insight into microstructure engineering via controlled solid phase transition.

Low-temperature tetragonal VN is theoretically proved to belong to space group P$\bar{4}$2m. The estimated Vickers hardnesses and fracture toughness of WC-type VN are around 37 GPa and 4.3-6.1 MPa m$^{1/2}$, respectively. Al$_2$Cu-type VN$_2$ (I4/mcm) with a Vickers hardness of 25-27 GPa and fracture toughness of 3.6-6.6 MPa m$^{1/2}$ also shows excellent mechanical properties. Elastic properties of WC-type mononitrides of transition metals from IVB group (Ti, Zr and Hf), VB group (V, Nb and Ta) and VIB (Cr, Mo and W) are calculated and compared. Both the bond strength and structural configuration determine the mechanical properties of a material.

Here, we report an unexpected discovery of ordered copper boride grown epitaxially on Cu(111) under ultrahigh vacuum. Scanning tunneling microscopy experiments combined with ab initio evolutionary structure prediction reveal a remarkably complex structure of 2D-Cu8B14. Strong intra-layer p-d hybridization and a large amount of charge transfer between Cu and B atoms are the key factors for the emergence of copper boride. This makes the discovered material unique and opens up the possibility of synthesizing ordered low-dimensional structures in similar immiscible systems.

mDCThermalC is a program written in Python for computing lattice thermal conductivity of crystalline bulk materials using the modified Debye-Callaway model. Building upon the traditional Debye-Callaway theory, the modified model obtains the lattice thermal conductivity by averaging the contributions from acoustic and optical branches based on their specific heat. The only inputs of this program are the phonon spectrum, phonon velocity and Gruneisen parameter, all of which can be calculated using third-party ab initio packages, making the method fully parameter-free. This leads to a fast and accurate evaluation and enables high-throughput calculations of lattice thermal conductivity even in large and complex systems. In addition, this program calculates the specific heat and phonon relaxation times for different scattering processes, which will be beneficial for understanding the phonon transfer behavior.

Our calculations predict I4/mmm $\rightarrow$ R$\bar{3}$m and I4/mmm $\rightarrow$ Cmma transitions in TiH and TiH$_2$, respectively. Phonons and the electron--phonon coupling of all searched titanium hydrides are analyzed at high pressure. It is found that Immm-Ti$_2$H$_{13}$ rather than the highest hydrogen content C2/m-TiH$_{22}$, exhibits the highest superconducting critical temperature T$_{c}$. The estimated T$_{c}$ of Immm-Ti$_2$H$_{13}$ and C2/m-TiH$_{22}$ are respectively 127.4--149.4 K ($μ^{*}$=0.1-0.15) at 350 GPa and 91.3--110.2 K at 250 GPa by numerically solving the Eliashberg equations. One of the effects of pressure on T$_{c}$ can be attributed to the softening and hardening of phonons with increasing pressure.

Encouraged by the recently found highest-$T_C$ superconductor fcc-$LaH_{10}$, here we discover several superhydrides of another lanthanide - neodymium. We identify three novel metallic Nd-H phases at pressure range from 85 to 135 GPa: $I4/mmm$-$NdH_4$, $C2/c$-$NdH_7$, $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$, synthesized by laser-heating metal samples in NH3BH3 media for in situ generation of hydrogen. A lower trihydride $Fm\bar{3}m$-$NdH_3$ is found at pressures from 2 to 52 GPa. $I4/mmm$-$NdH_4$ and $C2/c$-$NdH_7$ are stable from 135 down to 85 GPa, and $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$ from 110 to 130 GPa. Measurements of the electrical resistance of NdH9 demonstrate a possible superconducting transition at ~4.5 K in $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$. Our theoretical calculations predict that all the neodymium hydrides have antiferromagnetic order at pressures below 150 GPa and represent one of the first discovered examples of strongly correlated superhydrides with large exchange spin-splitting in the electron band structure (> 450 meV). The critical N$é$el temperatures for new neodymium hydrides are estimated using the mean-field approximation as about 4 K ($NdH_4$), 251 K ($NdH_7$) and 136 K ($NdH_9$).

Pressure-stabilized hydrides are a new rapidly growing class of high-temperature superconductors which is believed to be described within the conventional phonon-mediated mechanism of coupling. Here we report the synthesis of yttrium hexahydride Im3m-YH$_6$ that demonstrates the superconducting transition with T$_c$ = 224 K at 166 GPa, much lower than the theoretically predicted (>270 K). The measured upper critical magnetic field B$_c$$_2$(0) of YH$_6$ was found to be 116-158 T, which is 2-2.5 times larger than the calculated value. A pronounced shift of T$_c$ in yttrium deuteride YD$_6$ with the isotope coefficient 0.4 supports the phonon-assisted superconductivity. Current-voltage measurements showed that the critical current I$_c$ and its density J$_c$ may exceed 1.75 A and 3500 A/mm$^2$ at 0 K, respectively, which is comparable with the parameters of commercial superconductors, such as NbTi and YBCO. The superconducting density functional theory (SCDFT) and anharmonic calculations suggest unusually large impact of the Coulomb repulsion in this compound. The results indicate notable departures of the superconducting properties of the discovered YH$_6$ from the conventional Migdal-Eliashberg and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theories.

Molybdenum borides were studied theoretically using first-principles calculations, empirical total energy model and global optimization techniques to determine stable crystal structures. Our calculations reveal the structures of known Mo-B phases, attaining close agreement with experiment. Following our developed lattice model, we describe in detail the crystal structure of boron-rich $MoB_x$ phases with 3<x<9 as the hexagonal $P6_3/mmc$-$MoB_3$ structure with Mo atoms partially replaced by triangular boron units. The most energetically stable arrangement of these $B_3$ units corresponds to their uniform distribution in the bulk of the crystal structure, which leads to the formation of a disordered nonstoichiometric phase, with ordering arising at compositions close to x=5 due to a strong repulsive interaction between neighboring $B_3$ units. The most energetically favorable structures of $MoB_x$ correspond to the compositions 4<x<5, with $MoB_5$ being the boron-richest stable phase. The estimated hardness of $MoB_5$ is 37-39 GPa, suggesting that the boron-rich phases are potentially superhard.

Superhydrides have complex hydrogenic sublattices and are important prototypes for studying metallic hydrogen and high-temperature superconductors. Encouraged by the results on LaH10, in consideration of the differences between La and Pr, Pr-H system is especially worth studying because of the magnetism and valence-band f-electrons in element Pr. Here we successfully synthesized praseodymium superhydrides (PrH9) in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis demonstrated the presence of previously predicted F43m-PrH9 and unexpected P63/mmc-PrH9 phases. Moreover, Fm3m-PrH3, P4/nmm-PrH(3-δ) and Fm3m-PrH(1+x) were found below 52 GPa. F43m-PrH9 and P63/mmc-PrH9 were stable above 100 GPa in experiment. Experimental studies of electrical resistance in the PrH9 sample showed the emergence of superconducting transition (Tc) below 9K and a dependent Tc on applied magnetic field. Theoretical calculations indicate that magnetic order and electron-phonon interaction coexist in a very close range of pressures in the PrH9 sample which may contribute to its low superconducting temperature Tc. Our results highlight the intimate connections among hydrogenic sublattices, density of states, magnetism and superconductivity in Pr-based superhydrides.

We have performed a systematic investigation of the pressure-composition phase diagram of the C-H system at pressures up to 400 GPa using evolutionary structure prediction coupled with ab initio calculations and discovered that only saturated hydrocarbons are thermodynamically stable. Several stable methane-hydrogen co crystals are predicted: 2CH4 * H2, earlier obtained experimentally, is predicted to have I4/m space group and 2-90 GPa stability range at 0 K, and two new thermodynamically stable compounds 2CH4 * 7H2 (P-3m1 space group) and CH4 * 9H2 (Cm space group), as potential energy storage materials. P21/c phase of methane is predicted to be stable at pressures < 8 GPa; bulk graphane (CH) was shown to be thermodynamically stable at 7-18 and 18-50 GPa and 0 K in the P-3m and Cmca phases, respectively; polyethylene is shown to have a narrow field of stability. Although several studies have found superconductivity and phase transitions in metallic La, there was a lack of experimental evidence for the equation of state (EoS) and superconductivity above one megabar pressure. Here, we extend the pressure range up to 140 GPa to study EoS and superconductivity of lanthanum via electrical transport and X-ray diffraction measurements. The experimental XRD patterns point to a phase transition sequences R3m-Fm3m-Fmmm above 78 GPa. All the experimental pressure-volume data were fitted by the 3rd order Birch-Murnaghan equation: V0 = 35.2 (4) A^3, B0 = 27 (1) GPa and B0' = 4. Superconducting critical temperature Tc(onset) of lanthanum is 9.6 K at 78 GPa, which decreases to 2.2 K at 140 GPa. The upper critical magnetic field Bc2(0) was found to be 0.32-0.43 T at 140 GPa. Ab initio calculations give predicted Tc(A-D)=2.2 K (mu*=0.195), dTc/dP = 0.11-0.13 K/GPa and Hc=0.4 T at 140 GPa.

Superconductivity was evidenced by the observation of zero resistance and a decrease of $T_C$ under external magnetic field up to 16 Tesla. This is one of the highest critical temperatures that has been achieved experimentally in any compounds, along with such materials as $LaH_{10}$, $H_3S$ and $HgBa_2Ca_xCu_2O_{6+z}$. Our experiments show that $fcc$-$ThH_{10}$ has stabilization pressure of 85 GPa, making this material unique among all known high-$T_C$ metal polyhydrides. Two recently predicted Th-H compounds, $I4/mmm$-$ThH_4$ (> 86 GPa) and $Cmc2_1$-$ThH_6$ (86-104 GPa), were also synthesized. Its application to a model system borophene reveals an unexpected rich magnetism and polymorphism. A stable borophene with nonzero thickness was an antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor from first-principles calculations, which can be further turned into a half metal by finite electron do**. In this borophene, the buckling and coupling among three atomic layers are not only responsible for the magnetism, but also result in an out-of-plane negative Poissons ratios under uniaxial tension, making it the first elemental material possessing auxetic and magnetic properties simultaneously.

Tin-chalcogenides SnX (X = Te, Se and S) have been arousing research interest due to their thermoelectric physical properties. The two-dimensional (2D) counterparts, which are expected to enhance the property, nevertheless, have not been fully explored because of many possible structures. Generating variable composition of 2D Sn$_{1-x}$X$_{x}$ systems (X = Te, Se and S) has been performed using global searching method based on evolutionary algorithm combining with density functional calculations. A new hexagonal phase named by $β'$-SnX is found by Universal Structure Predictor Evolutionary Xtallography (USPEX), and the structural stability has been further checked by phonon dispersion calculation and the elasticity criteria. The $β'$-SnTe is the most stable among all possible 2D phases of SnTe including those experimentally available phases. Further, $β'$ phases of SnSe and SnS are also found energetically close to the most stable phases. High thermoelectronic (TE) performance has been achieved in the $β'$-SnX phases, which have dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) as high as $\sim$0.96 to 3.81 for SnTe, $\sim$0.93 to 2.51 for SnSe and $\sim$1.19 to 3.18 for SnS at temperature ranging from 300 K to 900 K with practically attainable carrier concentration of 5$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. The high TE performance is resulted from a high power factor which is attributed to the quantum confinement of 2D materials and the band convergence near Fermi level, as well as low thermal conductivity mainly from both low elastic constants due to weak inter-Sn bonding strength and strong lattice anharmonicity.

As an example, we report an unprecedented first-principles global optimization of 315 SinOm clusters with n<=15 and m<=20. We predict stability of a hitherto unreported polyhydride $P6/mmm$-$LaH_{16}$ at pressures above 150 GPa; at 200 GPa its predicted superconducting $T_C$ is 156 K, critical field $μ_0$$H_C$(0) ~ 35 T and superconducting gap is up to 35 meV. We revisit superconductivity of the recently discovered $LaH_{10}$ and find its $T_C$ to be up to 259 K (170 GPa) from solving the Eliashberg equation and 271 K from solving the gap equation in SCDFT which also allowed us to compute the Coulomb pseudopotential $μ^*$ for $LaH_{10}$ and $LaH_{16}$. Presence of several polymorph modifications of LaH10 may explain the variety in the experimentally measured $T_C$ values for $LaH_{10}$ [1,2]
