We explore non-equilibrium processes in two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFTs) due to the growth of operators induced by inhomogeneous and homogeneous Hamiltonians by investigating the time dependence of the partition function, energy density, and entanglement entropy. The non-equilibrium processes considered in this paper are constructed out of the Lorentzian and Euclidean time evolution governed by different Hamiltonians. We explore the effect of the time ordering on entanglement dynamics so that we find that in a free boson CFT and RCFTs, this time ordering does not affect the entanglement entropy, while in the holographic CFTs, it does. Our main finding is that in the holographic CFTs, the non-unitary time evolution induced by the inhomogeneous Hamiltonian can retain the initial state information longer than in the unitary time evolution.

A versatile method for angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) calculations is reported within the one-step model of photoemission. The initial states are obtained from a repeated-slab calculation using the projector-augmented wave (PAW) method. ARPES final states are constructed by matching the repeated-slab eigenstates of positive energy with free electron states that satisfy the time-reversed low-energy electron diffraction boundary conditions. Nonphysical solutions of the matching equations, which do not respect the flux conservation, are discarded. The method is applied to surface-normal photoemission from graphene as a function of photon energy from threshold up to 100 eV. The results are compared with independently performed multiple scattering calculations and very good agreement is obtained, provided that the photoemission matrix elements are computed with all-electron waves reconstructed from the PAW pseudo-waves. However, if the pseudo-waves are used directly, the relative intensity between $σ$- and $π$-band emission is wrong by an order of magnitude. The graphene ARPES intensity has a strong photon energy dependence including resonances. The normal emission spectrum from the $π$-band shows a hitherto unreported, sharp resonance at a photon energy of 31 eV. The resonance is due to a 2$D$ interband transitions and highlights the importance of matrix element effects beyond the final state plane-wave approximation.

The non-equilibrium process where the system does not evolve to the featureless state is one of the new central objects in the non-equilibrium phenomena. In this paper, starting from the short-range entangled state in the two-dimensional conformal field theories ($2$d CFTs), the boundary state with a regularization, we evolve the system with the inhomogeneous Hamiltonians called Möbius/SSD ones. Regardless of the details of CFTs considered in this paper, during the Möbius evolution, the entanglement entropy exhibits the periodic motion called quantum revival. During SSD time evolution, except for some subsystems, in the large time regime, entanglement entropy and mutual information are approximated by those for the vacuum state. We argue the time regime for the subsystem to cool down to vacuum one is $t_1 \gg \mathcal{O}(L\sqrt{l_A})$, where $t_1$, $L$, and $l_A$ are time, system, and subsystem sizes. This finding suggests the inhomogeneous quench induced by the SSD Hamiltonian may be used as the preparation for the approximately-vacuum state. We propose the gravity dual of the systems considered in this paper, furthermore, and generalize it. In addition to them, we discuss the relation between the inhomogenous quenches and continuous multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA).

In this work, we demonstrate photoemission orbital tomography for $π$-conjugated molecules with a tight-binding ansatz (linear combination of atomic orbitals). We analyze 2D PMMs of single-orientation pentacene/Ag(110) and multi-orientation 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride/Ag(110) and reproduce their three-dimensional highest occupied molecular orbitals. We demonstrate that the PhaseLift algorithm can be used to analyze PMM including experimental or theoretical uncertainties. With the 2D PMM for pentacene, we simultaneously optimized the structure and the molecular orbital. The present approach enables us to extract the three-dimensional orbitals and structures of existing materials.

We establish an equivalence between two different quantum quench problems, the joining local quantum quench and the Möbius quench, in the context of $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). Here, in the former, two initially decoupled systems (CFTs) on finite intervals are joined at $t=0$. In the latter, we consider the system that is initially prepared in the ground state of the regular homogeneous Hamiltonian on a finite interval and, after $t=0$, let it time-evolve by the so-called Möbius Hamiltonian that is spatially inhomogeneous. The equivalence allows us to relate the time-dependent physical observables in one of these problems to those in the other. As an application of the equivalence, we construct a holographic dual of the Möbius quench from that of the local quantum quench. The holographic geometry involves an end-of-the-world brane whose profile exhibits non-trivial dynamics.

Function is dynamic and originates at atomic interfaces. Combining the degrees of freedom of molecules with the peculiar properties of 2D quantum materials can create novel functionality. Here, we report the manipulation and ultrafast imaging of a unidirectional gearing motion in molecules on a 2D quantum material. To visualize and disentangle the intertwined structural and electronic dynamics of such a hybrid interface, we record a 'full molecular movie' by imaging the atomic positions, the evolution of the molecular orbital wavefunctions and the modification of electronic states of the substrate. In a multimodal investigation in a single setup, we disentangle dynamics in valence and core electrons of both the molecule and the surface with femtosecond and sub-ångström precision. The ultrafast rotational motion is fueled by the transfer of hot holes into the molecules that results in 'supercharging' of the film. As hot carriers move through the interface, we track a transient modification of the frontier molecular orbitals and observe a chiral symmetry breaking associated with local structural rearrangements. Our calculations show that the 'supercharging' changes the interfacial potential energy landscape and triggers the gearing motion. The experiment offers all-in-one imaging of the electronic, molecular orbital, chemical and structural dynamics during the flow of charge and energy across the hybrid interface. Our approach provides detailed dynamical information on the mechanism underlying surface-adsorbed molecular gears and enables tailoring novel functionalities in hybrid active matter.

We study the effect of spatial inhomogeneity on quantum information scrambling, a process of spreading and locally hiding quantum information in quantum many-body systems. As a paradigmatic example, we consider the quantum chaotic Ising spin chain and its inhomogeneous counterpart that is obtained by modulating the Hamiltonian density. Specifically, we consider the so-called Möbius and sine-square deformations that were previously studied in the context of (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories ($1+1$ d CFTs). In the spatial region where the modulated energy density is small, these deformations prevent the spreading of quantum information while in the region where the modulated energy density is large quantum information scrambling is accelerated. This suggests that we can control the scrambling and butterfly effect by spatially modulating the Hamiltonian density. We also found that the time dependence of energy density exhibits the signature of black-hole-like excitation found in the $1+1$ d CFTs even in the chaotic spin chain.

We study various quantum quench processes induced by the Möbius/sine-square deformation of the Hamiltonian in two-dimensional conformal field theories starting from the thermofield double state in the two copies of the Hilbert space. These quantum quenches, some of which are directly related to the operator entanglement of the time-evolution operators, allow us to study scrambling and recovery of quantum information. In particular, under the SSD time-evolution, we show from the time-dependence of mutual information that the Bell pairs, initially shared by the subsystems of the two Hilbert spaces, may revive even after the mutual information for small subsystems is completely destroyed by quantum information scrambling dynamics. This mutual information is robust against the strong scrambling dynamics. As a consequence, the steady state has a non-local correlation shared not by any of two parties but by three parties. In the holographic dual description, a wormhole connecting the two Hilbert spaces may non-linearly grow with time during the quantum quenches. We also propose effective pictures that describe the dynamics of mutual information during the time-evolution by inhomogeneous Hamiltonians.

We study the dynamical properties of a strongly scrambling quantum circuit involving a projective measurement on a finite-sized region by studying the operator entanglement entropy and mutual information (OEE and BOMI) of the dual operator state that corresponds to this quantum circuit. The time-dependence of the OEE exhibits a new dynamical behavior of operator entanglement, namely an additional fractional coefficient that accompanies the linear time growth of the OEE. For a holographic system, this is equivalent to an additional fractional coefficient that modifies the linear growth rate of the wormhole volume. The time-dependence of the BOMI shows that the projective measurement may destroy the non-local correlations in this dual state. We also propose a gravity dual as well as a line-tension picture, which is an effective model, that describe this strongly scrambling quantum circuit.

There is a property of a quantum state called magic. It measures how difficult for a classical computer to simulate the state. In this paper, we study magic of states in the integrable and chaotic regimes of the higher-spin generalization of the Ising model through two quantities called "Mana" and "Robustness of Magic" (RoM). We find that in the chaotic regime, Mana increases monotonically in time in the early-time region, and at late times these quantities oscillate around some non-zero value that increases linearly with respect to the system size. Our result also suggests that under chaotic dynamics, any state evolves to a state whose Mana almost saturates the optimal upper bound, i.e., the state becomes "maximally magical." We find that RoM also shows similar behaviors. On the other hand, in the integrable regime, Mana and RoM behave periodically in time in contrast to the chaotic case. In the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence (AdS/CFT correspondence), classical spacetime emerges from the chaotic nature of the dual quantum system. Our result suggests that magic of quantum states is strongly involved behind the emergence of spacetime geometry.

We study non-equilibrium processes in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) after quantum quenches starting from the thermal equilibrium (Gibbs) state. Our quench protocol uses spatially inhomogeneous Hamiltonians, the Mobius and sine-square-deformed (SSD) Hamiltonians. After a quench by the Mobius Hamiltonian, physical quantities such as von Neumann entropy for subsystems exhibit periodic oscillations (quantum revival). On the other hand, there is no quantum revival after a quench using the SSD Hamiltonian. Instead, almost all the degrees of freedom of the system are asymptotically gathered at a single point, the fixed point of the SSD Hamiltonian. This results in a point-like excitation that carries as much information as the total thermal entropy -- like a black hole. We call this excitation a black-hole-like excitation. In contrast, parts of the system other than the fixed point approach the low-entropy (low-temperature) state at late times, and the reduced density matrix is given effectively by that of the ground state. When the CFT admits a holographic dual description, these quenches induce inhomogeneous deformations of the black hole in the bulk. In particular, after the quench by the SSD Hamiltonian, at late enough times, the horizon of the bulk black hole asymptotically "touches" the boundary. We also propose and demonstrate that our quench setups can be used to simulate the formation and evaporation processes of black holes, and create low-temperature states.

In this paper, we look for signatures of quantum revivals in two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFTs) on a spatially compact manifold by using operator entanglement. It is believed that thermalization does not occur on spatially compact manifolds as the quantum state returns to its initial state which is a phenomenon known as quantum revival. We find that in CFTs such as the free fermion CFT, the operator mutual information exhibits quantum revival in accordance with the relativistic propagation of quasiparticles while in holographic CFTs, the operator mutual information does not exhibit this revival and the quasiparticle picture breaks down. Furthermore, by computing the tripartite operator mutual information, we find that the information scrambling ability of holographic CFTs can be weakened by the finite size effect. We propose a modification of an effective model known as the line tension picture to explain the entanglement dynamics due to the strong scrambling effect and find a close relationship between this model and the wormhole (Einstein-Rosen Bridge) in the holographic bulk dual.

Understanding how and whether local perturbations can affect the entire quantum system is a fundamental step in understanding non-equilibrium phenomena such as thermalization. This knowledge of non-equilibrium phenomena is applicable for quantum computation, as many quantum computers employ non-equilibrium processes for computations. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of bi- and tripartite operator mutual information of the time-evolution operator and the Pauli spin operators in the one-dimensional Ising model with magnetic field and the disordered Heisenberg model to study the properties of quantum circuits. In the Ising model, the early-time evolution qualitatively follows an effective light cone picture, and the late-time value is well described by Page's value for a random pure state. In the Heisenberg model with strong disorder, we find that many-body localization prevents the information from propagating and being delocalized. We also find an effective Ising Hamiltonian that describes the time evolution of bi- and tripartite operator mutual information for the Heisenberg model in the large disorder regime.

We do this by computing multipartite entanglement measures in the Hilbert space of local operators in the Heisenberg picture. The sensitivity to initial conditions that we explore is an illuminating manifestation of the butterfly effect in quantum many-body systems. We derive a "membrane theory" in Haar random unitary circuits to compute the mutual information, logarithmic negativity, and reflected entropy in the local operator state by map** to a classical statistical mechanics problem and find that any local operator insertion delocalizes information as fast as is allowed by causality. Identical behavior is found for conformal field theories admitting holographic duals where the bulk geometry is described by the eternal black hole with a local object situated at the horizon. In contrast to these maximal scramblers, only an $O(1)$ amount of information is found to be delocalized by local operators in integrable systems such as free fermions and Clifford circuits.

We consider the logarithmic negativity and related quantities of time evolution operators. We study free fermion, compact boson, and holographic conformal field theories (CFTs) as well as numerical simulations of random unitary circuits and integrable and chaotic spin chains. The holographic behavior strongly deviates from known non-holographic CFT results and displays clear signatures of maximal scrambling. Intriguingly, the random unitary circuits display nearly identical behavior to the holographic channels. Generically, we find the "line-tension picture" to effectively capture the entanglement dynamics for ergodic systems and the "quasi-particle picture" for integrable systems. With this motivation, we propose an effective line-tension that captures the dynamics of the logarithmic negativity in ergodic systems in the spacetime scaling limit. We compare the negativity and mutual information leading us to find distinct dynamics of quantum and classical information. The "spurious entanglement" we observe may have implications on the "simulatability" of quantum systems on classical computers. Finally, we elucidate the connection between the operation of partially transposing a density matrix in conformal field theory and the entanglement wedge cross section in Anti-de Sitter space using geodesic Witten diagrams.

We study the time evolution of the entanglement entropy after quantum quenches in Lifshitz free scalar theories, with the dynamical exponent $z>1$, by using the correlator method. For quantum quenches we consider two types of time-dependent mass functions: end-critical-protocol (ECP) and cis-critical-protocol (CCP). In both cases, at early times the entanglement entropy is independent of the subsystem size. After a critical time ($t_c$), the entanglement entropy starts depending on the subsystem size significantly. This critical time $t_c$ for $z = 1$ in the fast ECP and CCP has been explained well by the fast quasi-particle of the quasi-particle picture. However, we find that for $z > 1$ this explanation does not work and $t_c$ is delayed. We explain why $t_c$ is delayed for $z>1$ based on the quasiparticle picture: in essence, it is due to the competition between the fast and slow quasiparticles. At late times, in the ECP, the entanglement entropy slowly increases while, in the CCP, it is oscillating with a well defined period by the final mass scale, independently of $z$. We give an interpretation of this phenomena by the correlator method. As $z$ increases, the entanglement entropy increases, which can be understood by long-range interactions due to $z$.

In this paper, we study how quantum correlation between subsystems changes in time by investigating time evolution of mutual information and logarithmic negativity in two protocols of mass quench. Hamiltonian in both protocols is for 2-dimensional free scalar theory with time-dependent mass: the mass in one case decreases monotonically and vanishes asymptotically (ECP), and that in the other decreases monotonically before t = 0, but increases monotonically afterward, and becomes constant asymptotically (CCP). We study the time evolution of the quantum correlations under those protocols in two different limits of the mass quench; fast limit and slow limit depending on the speed with which the mass is changed. We obtain the following two results: (1) For the ECP, we find that the time evolution of logarithmic negativity is, when the distance between the two subsystems is large enough, well-interpreted in terms of the propagation of relativistic particles created at a time determined by the limit of the quench we take. On the other hand, the evolution of mutual information in the ECP depends not only on the relativistic particles but also on slowly-moving particles. (2) For the CCP, both logarithmic negativity and mutual information oscillate in time after the quench. When the subsystems are well-separated, the oscillation of the quantum correlations in the fast limit is suppressed, and the time evolution looks similar to that under the ECP in the fast limit.

We study operator entanglement measures of the unitary evolution operators of (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), aiming to uncover their scrambling and chaotic behaviors. In particular, we compute the bi-partite and tri-partite mutual information for various configurations of input and output subsystems, and as a function of time. We contrast three different CFTs: the free fermion theory, compactified free boson theory at various radii, and CFTs with holographic dual. We find that the bi-partite mutual information exhibits distinct behaviors for these different CFTs, reflecting the different information scrambling capabilities of these unitary operators; while a quasi-particle picture can describe well the case the free fermion and free boson CFTs, it completely fails for the case of holographic CFTs. Similarly, the tri-partite mutual information also distinguishes the unitary evolution operators of different CFTs. In particular, its late-time behaviors, when the output subsystems are semi-infinite, are quite distinct for these theories. We speculate that for holographic theories the late-time saturation value of the tri-partite mutual information takes the largest possible negative value and saturates the lower bound among quantum field theories.

We study dynamics of quantum entanglement in smooth global quenches with a finite rate, by computing the time evolution of entanglement entropy in 1 + 1 dimensional free scalar theory with time-dependent masses which start from a nonzero value at early time and either crosses or approaches zero. The time-dependence is chosen so that the quantum dynamics is exactly solvable. If the quenches asymptotically approach a critical point at late time, the early-time and late-time entropies are proportional to the time and subsystem size respectively. Their proportionality coefficients are determined by scales: in a fast limit, an initial correlation length; in a slow limit, an effective scale defined when adiabaticity breaks down. If the quenches cross a critical point, the time evolution of entropy is characterized by the scales: the initial correlation length in the fast limit and the effective correlation length in the slow limit. The entropy oscillates, and the entanglement oscillation comes from a coherence between right-moving and left-moving waves if we measure the entropy after time characterized by the quench rate. The periodicity of the late-time oscillation is consistent with the periodicity of the oscillation of zero modes which are zero-momentum spectra of two point functions of a fundamental field and its conjugate momentum.

Global quantum quench with a finite quench rate which crosses critical points is known to lead to universal scaling of correlation functions as functions of the quench rate. In this work, we explore scaling properties of the entanglement entropy of a subsystem in a harmonic chain during a mass quench which asymptotes to finite constant values at early and late times and for which the dynamics is exactly solvable. When the initial state is the ground state, we find that for large enough subsystem sizes the entanglement entropy becomes independent of size. This is consistent with Kibble-Zurek scaling for slow quenches, and with recently discussed "fast quench scaling" for quenches fast compared to physical scales, but slow compared to UV cutoff scales.

In this work we consider the time evolution of charged Renyi entanglement entropies after exciting the vacuum with local fermionic operators. In order to explore the information contained in charged Renyi entropies, we perform computations of their excess due to the operator excitation in 2d CFT, free fermionic field theories in various dimensions as well as holographically. In the analysis we focus on the dependence on the entanglement charge, the chemical potential and the spacetime dimension. We find that excesses of charged (Renyi) entanglement entropy can be interpreted in terms of charged quasiparticles. Moreover, we show that by appropriately tuning the chemical potential charged Renyi entropies can be used to extract entanglement in a certain charge sector of the excited state.

This happens even for the excited states in free Yang-Mills theories. Next, we analyze strongly coupled large N CFTs from both field theoretic and holographic viewpoints. We find that the Renyi entanglement entropy of the excited state produced by a local operator, grows logarithmically under its time evolution and its coefficient is proportional to the conformal dimension of the local operator.

This is an expanded version of the short report arXiv:1401.0539, where we stud- ied the (Renyi) entanglement entropies for the excited state defined by acting a given local operator on the ground state. We introduced the (Renyi) entanglement entropies of given local operators which measure the degrees of freedom of local operators and characterize them in conformal field theories from the viewpoint of quantum entanglement. In present paper, we explain how to compute them in free massless scalar field theories and we also investigate their time evolution. The results are interpreted in terms of relativistic propagation of an entangled pair. The main new results which we acquire in the present paper are as follows. Firstly, we provide an explanation which shows that the (Renyi) entanglement entropies of a specific operator are given by (Renyi) entanglement entropies of binomial distribution by the replica method. That operator is constructed of only scalar field. Secondly, we found the sum rule which (Renyi) entanglement entropies of those local operators obey. Those local operators are located separately. Moreover we argue that (Renyi) entanglement entropies of specific operators in conformal field theories are given by (Renyi) entanglement entropies of binomial distribution. These specific operators are constructed of single-species operator. We also argue that general operators obey the sum rule which we mentioned above.

We introduce a series of quantities which characterizes a given local operator in conformal field theories from the viewpoint of quantum entanglement. It is defined by the increased amount of (Renyi) entanglement entropy at late time for an excited state defined by acting the local operator on the vacuum. We consider a conformal field theory on an infinite space and take the subsystem in the definition of the entanglement entropy to be its half. We calculate these quantities for a free massless scalar field theory in 2, 4 and 6 dimensions. We find that these results are interpreted in terms of quantum entanglement of finite number states, including EPR states. They agree with a heuristic picture of propagations of entangled particles.

We calculate the time-evolution of holographic entanglement entropy. We confirm a logarithmic time-evolution, which is known to be typical in two dimensional local quenches. To study the structure of quantum entanglement in general quantum systems, we introduce a new quantity which we call entanglement density and apply this analysis to quantum quenches. We show that this quantity is directly related to the energy density in a small size limit. Moreover, we find a simple relationship between the amount of quantum information possessed by a massive object and its total energy based on the AdS/CFT.

In relativistic setups, its effective temperature is proportional to the inverse of the subsystem size. This provides a universal relationship between the energy and the amount of quantum information. We derive the results using holography and confirm them in two dimensional field theories. We will also comment on an example with negative specific heat and suggest a connection between the second law of thermodynamics and the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy.

We study a conjectured connection between the AdS/CFT and a real-space quantum renormalization group scheme, the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). By making a close contact with the holographic formula of the entanglement entropy, we propose a general definition of the metric in the MERA in the extra holographic direction, which is formulated purely in terms of quantum field theoretical data. Using the continuum version of the MERA (cMERA), we calculate this emergent holographic metric explicitly for free scalar boson and free fermions theories, and check that the metric so computed has the properties expected from AdS/CFT. We also discuss the cMERA in a time-dependent background induced by quantum quench and estimate its corresponding metric.

In this paper, we study the logarithmic terms in the partition functions of CFTs with boundaries (BCFTs). In three dimensions, their coefficients give the boundary central charges, which are conjectured to be monotonically decreasing functions under the RG flows. We present a few supporting evidences from field theory calculations. In two dimensions, we give a holographic construction (AdS/BCFT) for an arbitrary shape of boundary and calculate its logarithmic term as well as boundary energy momentum tensors, confirming its consistency with the Weyl anomaly. Moreover, we give perturbative solutions of gravity duals for the three dimensional BCFTs with any shapes of boundaries. We find that the standard Fefferman-Graham expansion breaks down for generic choices of BCFT boundaries.
