In designing material functionality within the intricate realm of transition metal oxides, lattice structure and d-orbital occupancy are two principal determinants of the correlated physical properties, such as superconductivity. However, the modulation of these two factors is inherently limited by the need to balance thermodynamic stability, kinetic mobility, and synthesis precision, particularly for oxidation-demanding phases. We introduce a methodology, namely the gigantic-oxidative atomically layered epitaxy (GOAL-Epitaxy), enhancing oxidation power 3-4 orders of magnitude beyond oxide molecular beam epitaxy (OMBE) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD), while ensuring atomic-layer-by-layer growth of designed complex structures. Consequently, thermodynamic stability is markedly augmented at elevated temperatures, improving growth kinetics. We demonstrate the accurate synthesis of complex nickelates and cuprates, especially an artificially designed structure as a parent of high-temperature superconductivity, in which alternating single and double NiO2 layers possess distinct nominal d-orbital occupancy. The GOAL-Epitaxy enables material discovery within the vastly broadened growth parameter space.

Coexisting orders are key features of strongly correlated materials and underlie many intriguing phenomena from unconventional superconductivity to topological orders. Here, we report the coexistence of two interacting charge-density-wave (CDW) orders in EuTe4, a layered crystal that has drawn considerable attention owing to its anomalous thermal hysteresis and a semiconducting CDW state despite the absence of perfect FS nesting. By accessing unoccupied conduction bands with time- and angle-resolved photoemission measurements, we find that mono- and bi-layers of Te in the unit cell host different CDWs that are associated with distinct energy gaps. The two gaps display dichotomous evolutions following photoexcitation, where the larger bilayer CDW gap exhibits less renormalization and faster recovery. Surprisingly, the CDW in the Te monolayer displays an additional momentum-dependent gap renormalization that cannot be captured by density-functional theory calculations. This phenomenon is attributed to interlayer interactions between the two CDW orders, which account for the semiconducting nature of the equilibrium state. Our findings not only offer microscopic insights into the correlated ground state of EuTe4 but also provide a general non-equilibrium approach to understand coexisting, layer-dependent orders in a complex system.

The superconducting order parameter of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaRhSn is investigated by means of low temperature measurements of the specific heat, muon-spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) and the tunnel-diode oscillator (TDO) based method. The specific heat and magnetic penetration depth [$λ(T)$] show an exponentially activated temperature dependence, demonstrating fully gapped superconductivity in LaRhSn. The temperature dependence of $λ^{-2}(T)$ deduced from the TDO based method and $μ$SR show nearly identical behavior, which can be well described by a single-gap $s$-wave model, with a zero temperature gap value of $Δ(0)=1.77(4)k_BT_c$. The zero-field $μ$SR spectra do not show detectable changes upon cooling below $T_c$, and therefore there is no evidence for time-reversal-symmetry breaking in the superconducting state.

CaSb2 is a topological nodal-line semimetal that becomes superconducting below 1.6 K, providing an ideal platform to investigate the interplay between topologically nontrivial electronic bands and superconductivity. In this work, we investigated the superconducting order parameter of CaSb2 by measuring its magnetic penetration depth change Δλ(T) down to 0.07 K, using a tunneling diode oscillator (TDO) based technique. Well inside the superconducting state, Δλ(T) shows an exponential activated behavior, and provides direct evidence for a nodeless superconducting gap. By analyzing the temperature dependence of the superfluid density and the electronic specific heat, we find both can be consistently described by a two-gap s-wave model, in line with the presence of multiple Fermi surfaces associated with distinct Sb sites in this compound. These results demonstrate fully-gapped superconductivity in CaSb2 and constrain the allowed pairing symmetry.

We have synthesized YbPdAs with the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure, in which the Yb-atoms form a distorted kagome sublattice in the hexagonal basal plane. Magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic measurements indicate that YbPdAs is a low-carrier Kondo lattice compound with an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 6.6 K, which is slightly suppressed in applied magnetic fields up to 9 T. The magnetic entropy at $T_\mathrm{N}$ recovers only 33\% of $R\ln{2}$, the full entropy of the ground state doublet of the Yb-ions. The resistivity displays a $-\ln T$ dependence between 30 and 15 K, followed by a broad maximum at $T\rm_{coh}$ = 12 K upon cooling. Below $T\rm_{coh}$, the magnetoresistance changes from negative to positive, suggesting a crossover from single-ion Kondo scattering processes at intermediate temperatures to coherent Kondo lattice behaviors at low temperatures. Both the Hall resistivity measurements and band structure calculations indicate a relatively low carrier concentration in YbPdAs. Our results suggest that YbPdAs could provide an opportunity for examining the interplay of Kondo physics and magnetic frustration in low carrier systems.

The specific heat of the La$_4$$T$Al compounds are consistent with an $s$-wave model with a fully open superconducting gap. In all cases, the upper critical fields are well described by the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model, and the values are well below the Pauli limit, indicating that orbital limiting is the dominant pair-breaking mechanism. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the degree of band splitting by the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC) shows considerable variation between the different compounds. This indicates that the strength of the ASOC is highly tunable across this series of superconductors, suggesting that these are good candidates for examining the relationship between the ASOC and superconducting properties in noncentrosymmetric superconductors.

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) investigation of ultra-thin epitaxial films of Ba$_2$IrO$_4$, and compare their low energy magnetic and spin-orbit excitations to those of their sister compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Due to the 180$^\circ$ Ir-O-Ir bond, the bandwidth of the magnon and spin-orbiton is significantly larger in Ba$_2$IrO$_4$, making it difficult to describe these two types of excitations as separate well-defined quasiparticles. Both types of excitations are found to be quite sensitive to the effect of epitaxial strain. In addition, we find that the d-level inversion observed in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is absent in Ba$_2$IrO$_4$, as predicted in recent theoretical studies. Our results illustrate that the magnetic properties of Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ are substantially different from those of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, suggesting that these materials need to be examined more carefully with electron itinerancy taken into account.

The combination of magnetic symmetries and electronic band topology provides a promising route for realizing topologically nontrivial quasiparticles, and the manipulation of magnetic structures may enable the switching between topological phases, with the potential for achieving functional physical properties. Here, we report measurements of the electrical resistivity of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ under pressure, which show an intriguing insulating dome at pressures between $p_{\rm c1}\sim1.0$~GPa and $p_{\rm c2}\sim2.0$~GPa, situated between two regimes with metallic transport. The insulating state can be fully suppressed by a small magnetic field, leading to a colossal negative magnetoresistance on the order of $10^5$\%, accessible via a modest field of $\sim0.2$~T. First-principles calculations reveal that the dramatic evolution of the resistivity under pressure is due to consecutive transitions of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ from a magnetic topological insulator to a trivial insulator, and then to a Weyl semimetal, with the latter resulting from a pressure-induced change in the magnetic ground state. Similarly, the colossal magnetoresistance results from a field-induced polarization of the magnetic moments, transforming EuCd$_2$As$_2$ from a trivial insulator to a Weyl semimetal. These findings underscore weak magnetic exchange couplings and spin anisotropy as ingredients for discovering tunable magnetic topological materials with desirable functionalities.

Both transitions are suppressed by magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the c axis, and multiple field-induced transitions are observed for both field directions, leading to complex temperature-field diagrams with a dome-like magnetic phase for fields parallel to the c axis. Moreover, the dependence of the low temperature resistivity on the application of a training field, but the lack of remanent magnetization, suggests the presence of multiple antiferromagnetic domains in zero-field.

We report an investigation of the superconducting properties of the hexagonal noncentrosymmetric compound LaPdIn. Electrical resistivity, specific heat and ac susceptibility measurements demonstrate the presence of bulk superconductivity below $T_c$ = 1.6 K. The specific heat, together with the penetration depth measured using transverse-field muon spin rotation and the tunnel diode oscillator based method, are well described by single gap $s$-wave superconductivity, with a gap magnitude of 1.8$k_BT_c$. From zero-field muon spin relaxation results no evidence is found for the spontaneous emergence of magnetic fields in the superconducting state, indicating that time-reversal symmetry is preserved. Band structure calculations reveal that there is a relatively weak effect of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling on the electronic bands near the Fermi level, which is consistent with there being negligible singlet-triplet mixing due to broken inversion symmetry. On the other hand, isostructural LuPdIn and LaPtIn do not exhibit superconductivity down to 0.4 K, which may be due to these systems having a smaller density of states at the Fermi level.

The recently discovered kagome metal series $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$=K, Rb, Cs) exhibits topologically nontrivial band structures, chiral charge order and superconductivity, presenting a unique platform for realizing exotic electronic states. The nature of the superconducting state and the corresponding pairing symmetry are key questions that demand experimental clarification. Here, using a technique based on the tunneling diode oscillator, the magnetic penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ was measured down to 0.07 K. A clear exponential behavior in $Δλ(T)$ with marked deviations from a $T$ or $T^2$ temperature dependence is observed at low temperatures, indicating a deficiency of nodal quasiparticles. Temperature dependence of the superfluid density and electronic specific heat can be described by two-gap $s$-wave superconductivity, consistent with the presence of multiple Fermi surfaces in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. These results evidence nodeless superconductivity in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ under ambient pressure, and constrain the allowed pairing symmetry.

Evidence for broken time reversal symmetry (TRS) has been found in the superconducting states of the $R_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ (R = Sc, Y, Lu) compounds with a centrosymmetric caged crystal structure, but the origin of this phenomenon is unresolved. Here we report neutron diffraction measurements of single crystals with $R$=Lu, as well as measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth using a self-induced tunnel diode-oscillator (TDO) based technique, together with band structure calculations using density functional theory. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal that the system crystallizes in a tetragonal caged structure, and that one of nominal Lu sites in the Lu$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ structure is occupied by Sn, yielding a composition Lu$_{5-x}$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18+x}$ ($x=1$). The low temperature penetration depth shift $Δλ(T)$ exhibits an exponential temperature dependence below around $0.3T_c$, giving clear evidence for fully gapped superconductivity. The derived superfluid density is reasonably well accounted for by a single gap $s$-wave model, whereas agreement cannot be found for models of TRS breaking states with two-component order parameters. Moreover, band structure calculations reveal multiple bands crossing the Fermi level, and indicate that the aforementioned TRS breaking states would be expected to have nodes on the Fermi surface, in constrast to the observations.

By employing a series of experimental techniques, we provide clear evidence that CaPtAs represents a rare example of a noncentrosymmetric superconductor which simultaneously exhibits nodes in the superconducting gap and broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in its superconducting state (below $T_c$ $\approx$ 1.5 K). Unlike in fully-gapped superconductors, the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ does not saturate at low temperatures, but instead it shows a $T^2$-dependence, characteristic of gap nodes. Both the superfluid density and the electronic specific heat are best described by a two-gap model comprising of a nodeless gap and a gap with nodes, rather than by single-band models. At the same time, zero-field muon-spin spectra exhibit increased relaxation rates below the onset of superconductivity, implying that TRS is broken in the superconducting state of CaPtAs, hence indicating its unconventional nature. Our observations suggest CaPtAs to be a new remarkable material which links two apparently disparate classes, that of TRS-breaking correlated magnetic superconductors with nodal gaps and the weakly-correlated noncentrosymmetric superconductors with broken TRS, normally exhibiting only a fully-gapped behavior.

We report measurements of the electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility of single crystalline LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ under pressure, in order to investigate the interplay of superconductivity and CDW order. LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ exhibits a first order phase transition from a tetragonal to orthorhombic structure, accompanied by the onset of CDW order below $T_{\rm{CDW}}$ = 76 K, while superconductivity occurs at a lower temperature of $T_{\rm{c}}$ = 1.87 K. We find that the application of pressure initially suppresses the CDW transition, but enhances $T_{\rm{c}}$. At pressures above 2.4 GPa, CDW order vanishes, while both $T_{\rm{c}}$ and the resistivity $A$-coefficient reach a maximum value around this pressure. Our results suggest that the occurrence of a superconducting dome can be accounted for within the framework of BCS theory, where there is a maximum in the density of states upon the closure of the CDW gap.

Tuning a very simple two-component holographic superfluid model, we can have a first order phase transition between two superfluid phases in the probe limit. Inspired by the potential landscape discussion, an intuitive physical picture for systems with first order phase transitions is provided. We stress that holography perfectly offers a generalized thermodynamic description of certain strongly coupled systems even out of local equilibrium, which enables us to carefully study domain wall structures of the system under first order phase transitions, either static or in real time dynamics. We numerically construct the 1D domain wall configuration and compute the surface tension of the domain wall from its generalized grand potential. We also numerically simulate the real time dynamics of a 2D bubble nucleation process (holographic boiling). The surface tension of the 1D domain wall nicely matches the final state of the 2D bubble nucleation process when the bubble radius is large enough.

The strange metal phases found to develop in a wide range of materials near a quantum critical point (QCP), have posed a long-standing mystery. The frequent association of strange metals with unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetic QCPs has led to a belief that they are highly entangled quantum states. Ferromagnets, by contrast are regarded as an unlikely setting for strange metals, for they are weakly entangled and their QCPs are often interrupted by competing phases or first order phase transitions. Here, we provide compelling evidence that the stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ becomes a strange metal at a pressure-induced QCP: specific heat and resistivity measurements demonstrate that the FM transition is continuously suppressed to zero temperature revealing a strange metal phase. We argue that strong magnetic anisotropy plays a key role in this process, injecting entanglement, in the form of triplet resonating valence bonds (tRVBs) into the ordered ferromagnet. We show that the singular transformation from tRVBs into Kondo singlets that occurs at the QCP causes a jump in the Fermi surface volume: a key driver of strange metallic behavior. Our results open up a new direction for research into FM quantum criticality, while also establishing an important new setting for the strange metal problem. Most importantly, strange metallic behavior at a FM quantum critical point suggests that it is quantum entanglement rather than the destruction of antiferromagnetism that is the common driver of the many varied examples of strange metallic behavior.

A number of rare-earth monopnictides have topologically non-trivial band structures together with magnetism and strong electronic correlations. In order to examine whether the antiferromagnetic (AFM) semimetal YbAs ($T\rm_N$ = 0.5 K) exhibits such a scenario, we have grown high-quality single crystals using a flux method, and characterized the magnetic properties and electronic structure using specific heat, magnetotransport and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both ARPES and DFT calculations find no evidence for band inversions in YbAs, indicating a topologically trivial electronic structure. From low-temperature magnetotransport measurements, we map the field-temperature phase diagram, where we find the presence of a field stabilized phase distinct from the AFM phase at low temperatures. An extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) for both YbAs and the nonmagnetic counterpart LuAs, is also observed, which can consistently be accounted for by the presence of electron-hole compensation. Moreover, an angle-dependent study of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect oscillations reveals very similar Fermi surfaces between YbAs and LuAs, with light effective masses down to at least 0.5 K, indicating that the Yb-$4f$ electrons are well localized, and do not contribute to the Fermi surface. However, the influence of the localized Yb-$4f$ electrons on the magnetotransport of YbAs can be discerned from the distinct temperature dependence of the XMR compared to that of LuAs, which we attribute to the influence of short-ranged spin correlations that appear well above $T\rm_N$.

By utilizing the AdS/CFT correspondence, we explore the dynamics of strongly coupled superfluid vortices in a disk with constant angular velocity. Each vortex in the vortex lattice is quantized with vorticity one from the direct inspection of their phases. As the angular velocity of the disk is greater than a critical value, the first vortex will be excited as expected from theoretical predictions. The subsequent two and more vortices are also generated by increasingly rotating the disk, resulting in the remarkable step transitions for the angular velocity to excite each individual vortex. When the vortex number is large enough, the density of vortices is found to be linearly proportional to the angular velocity, which matches the Feynman relation very well.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures constructed with two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted great interests, due to their fascinating properties and potential for novel applications. While earlier efforts have advanced the understanding of the ultrafast cross-layer charge transfer process in 2D heterostructures, mechanisms for the interfacial photocarrier recombination remain, to a large extent, unclear. Here, we investigate a heterostructure comprised of black phosphorus (BP) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), with a type-II band alignment. Interestingly, it is found that the photo-generated electrons in MoS2 (transferred from BP) exhibit an ultrafast lifetime of about 5 ps, significantly shorter than those of the constituent materials. By corroborating with the relaxation of photo-excited holes in BP, it is revealed that the ultrafast time constant is as a result of efficient Langevin recombination, where the high hole mobility of BP facilitates a large recombination coefficient (approximately 2x10^-10 m^2/s). In addition, broadband transient absorption spectroscopy confirms that the hot electrons transferred to MoS2 distribute over a broad energy range following an ultrafast thermalization. The rate of the interlayer Langevin recombination is found to exhibit no energy level dependence. Our findings provide essential insights into the fundamental photo-physics in type-II 2D heterostructures, and also provide useful guidelines for customizing photocarrier lifetimes of BP for high-speed photo-sensitive devices.

The noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re$_6$Zr has attracted much interest due to the observation of broken time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. Here we report an investigation of the superconducting gap structure of Re$_6$Zr single crystals by measuring the magnetic penetration depth shift $Δλ(T)$ and electronic specific heat $C_e(T)$. $Δλ(T)$ exhibits an exponential temperature dependence behavior for $T~\ll~T_c$, which indicates a fully-open superconducting gap. Our analysis shows that a single gap $s$-wave model is sufficient to describe both the superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$ and $C_e(T)$ results, with a fitted gap magnitude larger than the weak coupling BCS value, providing evidence for fully-gapped superconductivity in Re$_6$Zr with moderate coupling.

Magnetization, specific heat and resistivity measurements all show that CeZnAl$_3$ orders magnetically below around 4.4 K. Furthermore, magnetization measurements exhibit a hysteresis loop at low temperatures and fields, indicating the presence of a ferromagnetic component in the magnetic state. This points to a different nature of the magnetism in CeZnAl$_3$ compared to the other isostructural Ce$T$Al$_3$ compounds. Resistivity measurements under pressures up to 1.8 GPa show a moderate suppression of the ordering temperature with pressure, suggesting that measurements to higher pressures are required to look for quantum critical behavior.

In this paper, the holographic superconductor model with two s-wave orders from 4+1 dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is explored in the probe limit. At different values of the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient $α$, we study the influence of tuning the mass and charge parameters of the bulk scalar field on the free energy curve of condensed solution with signal s-wave order, and compare the difference of tuning the two different parameters while the changes of the critical temperature are the same. Based on the above results, it is indicated that the two free energy curves of different s-wave orders can have one or two intersection points, where two typical phase transition behaviors of the s+s coexistent phase, including the reentrant phase transition near the Chern-Simons limit $α=0.25$, can be found. We also give an explanation to the nontrivial behavior of the $T_c-α$ curves near the Chern-Simons limit, which might be heuristic to understand the origin of the reentrant behavior near the Chern-Simons limit.

We find that in the probe limit, the p+$i$p phase and the p-wave phase are equally stable, hence the p and $i$p orders can be mixed with an arbitrary ratio to form more general p+$λi$p phases, which are also equally stable with the p-wave and p+$i$p phases. As a result, the system possesses a degenerate thermal state in the superfluid region. We further study the case with considering the back reaction on the metric, and find that the degenerate ground states will be separated into p-wave and p+$i$p phases, and the p-wave phase is more stable. Finally, due to the different critical temperature of the zeroth order phase transitions from p-wave and p+$i$p phases to the normal phase, there is a temperature region where the p+$i$p phase exists but the p-wave phase doesn't. In this region we find the stable p+$i$p phase for the first time.

We also study the competition and coexistence of the s-wave and p-wave orders in the probe limit. In this work we continue to study the model by considering the full back-reaction The model shows a rich phase structure and various condensate behaviors such as the "n-type" and "u-type" ones, which are also known as reentrant phase transitions in condensed matter physics. The phase transitions to the p-wave phase or s+p coexisting phase become first order in strong back-reaction cases. In these first order phase transitions, the free energy curve always forms a swallow tail shape, in which the unstable s+p solution can also play an important role. The phase diagrams of this model are given in terms of the dimension of the scalar order and the temperature in the cases of eight different values of the back reaction parameter, which show that the region for the s+p coexisting phase is enlarged with a small or medium back reaction parameter, but is reduced in the strong back-reaction cases.

The films were grown on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ and $\mathrm{(LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(Sr_2AlTaO_6)_{0.7}}$ substrates, under slight tensile and compressive strains, respectively. Although the films develop a magnetic structure reminiscent of bulk $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$, the magnetic correlations are extremely anisotropic, with in-plane correlation lengths significantly longer than the out-of-plane correlation lengths. In addition, the compressive (tensile) strain serves to suppress (enhance) the magnetic ordering temperature $\mathrm{T_N}$, while raising (lowering) the energy of the zone boundary magnon. Quantum chemical calculations show that the tuning of magnetic energy scales can be understood in terms of strain-induced change in bond lengths.

We find that there are totally four phases in this model, namely, the normal phase without any condensate, s-wave phase, p-wave phase and the s+p coexisting phase. By calculating Gibbs free energy, the s+p coexisting phase turns out to be thermodynamically favored once it can appear. The phase diagram with the dimension of the scalar operator and temperature is drawn. The temperature range for the s+p coexisting phase is very narrow, which shows the competition between the s-wave and p-wave orders in the superconductor model.
