We developed a metallic pressure cell made of nickel-chromium-aluminum (NiCrAl) for use with a non-destructive pulse magnet and a magnetic susceptibility measurement apparatus with a proximity detector oscillator (PDO) in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 51 T under pressures of up to 2.1 GPa. Both the sample and sensor coil of the PDO were placed in the cell so that the magnetic signal from NiCrAl would not overlay the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility of the sample. A systematic investigation of the Joule heating originating from metallic parts of the pressure cell revealed that the temperature at the sample position remains at almost 1.4 K until approximately 80 $\%$ of the maximum applied magnetic field ($H_{\rm max}$) in the field-ascending process (e.g., 40 T for $H_{\rm max}$ of 51 T). The effectiveness of our apparatus was demonstrated, by investigating the pressure dependence of the magnetization process of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$.

Complexity of quantum phases of matter is often understood by the underlying gauge structures, as was recognized by the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and U(1) gauge theory description of spin liquid in frustrated magnets. Anomalous Hall effect of conducting electrons can intrisically arise from U(1) gauges expressing the spatial modulation of ferromagnetic moments or from SU(2) gauges representing the spin-orbit coupling effect. Similarly, in insulating ferro and antiferromagnets, the magnon excitations can contribute to anomalous transports by feeling the U(1) and SU(2) gauges arising from the features of ordered moments or interactions. In this work, we report the emergent higher rank SU(3) gauge structure in the magnon transport based on the thermal conductivity measurements of MnSc$_2$S$_4$ in an applied field up to 14\,T. The thermal Hall coefficient takes a substantial value when the material enters a three-sublattice antiferromagnetic skyrmion phase, which is confirmed by the large-scale spin wave theory. The excited magnons are dressed with SU(3) gauge field, which is a mixture of three species of U(1) gauge fields originating from the slowly varying magnetic moments on these sublattices.

We found that, with increasing $P$, $H_{\rm sat}$ increases and the uud-phase that appeared at $P$ = 0.7 GPa widened. Based on comparison between the experimental and calculated $H$-$P$ phase diagrams, the Y-phase was predicted to appear above 1.7 GPa. The interchain antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in the $ab$-plane was evaluated and found to increase with increasing $P$, which is consistent with a previous study under high pressure [D. Yamamoto {\it et al.}, Nat. Commun. {\bf 12}, 4263 (2021).]. Moreover, an anomaly was observed below $P$ = 0.6 GPa just below $H_{\rm sat}$ and might be a new phase transition derived from nonlinear response caused by the PDO technique.

In this study, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments for Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 metamagnetic shape memory alloy were performed under high magnetic fields up to 12 T using a pulsed magnet. Field-induced reverse transformation to austenite phase caused considerable changes in the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) signals and the magnetic moments of the ferromagnetic coupling between Mn, Ni, and Co were determined. The spin magnetic moment, Mspin, and orbital magnetic moment, Morb, of Mn atom in the induced austenite ferromagnetic phase, estimated based on the magneto-optical sum rule, were 3.2 and 0.13 μB, respectively, resulting in an Morb / Mspin ratio of 0.04. In the element-specific magnetization curves recorded at 150 K, metamagnetic behavior associated with the field-induced reverse transformation is clearly observed and reverse transformation finishing magnetic field and martensitic transformation starting magnetic field are detected. There was almost no difference in the magnetically averaged XAS spectrum for Mn-L2,3 edges between in the martensite and in the magnetic field-induced austenite phases, however, it was visible for Ni, indicating that Ni 3d-electrons mainly contribute to martensitic transformation.

Neutron diffraction with static and pulsed magnetic fields is used to directly probe the magnetic structures in LiNiPO$_4$ up to 25T and 42T, respectively. By combining these results with magnetometry and electric polarization measurements under pulsed fields, the magnetic and magnetoelectric phases are investigated up to 56T applied along the easy $c$-axis. In addition to the already known transitions at lower fields, three new ones are reported at 37.6, 39.4 and 54T. Ordering vectors are identified with ${\bf Q}_{\mathrm{VI}}$ = (0, 1/3, 0) in the interval 37.6--39.4T and ${\bf Q}_{\mathrm{VII}}$ = (0, 0, 0) in the interval 39.4-54T. A quadratic magnetoelectric effect is discovered in the ${\bf Q}_{\mathrm{VII}}$ = (0, 0, 0) phase and the field-dependence of the induced electric polarization is described using a simple mean-field model. The observed magnetic structure and magnetoelectric tensor elements point to a change in the lattice symmetry in this phase. We speculate on the possible physical mechanism responsible for the magnetoelectric effect in LiNiPO4.

Magnetization, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements are carried out to clarify the low-energy excitations for the S = 1/2 polyhedral clusters {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} and {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$}. The clusters provide unique model systems of Kagomé network on a quasi-sphere. The linear field variation of magnetization at low temperatures indicates that the ground state is singlet for both clusters. The temperature and the magnetic field dependence of specific heat shows a distinct difference between two clusters with differing structural symmetries. In {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with I$_h$ symmetry, the existence of the several tens of low-energy singlet excited states below the lowest triplet excited state is revealed. The specific heat of the slightly distorted {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with D$_{5h}$ symmetry leads to a drastic decrease of the singlet contribution, which is consistent with the partial lifting of the frustration and the decrease of degenerated low-energy states. The singlet excitation existence is confirmed further by the temperature dependence of the ESR spectra. Comprehensive experimental studies have demonstrated unique low-energy excitations of the spherical Kagomé networks and their sensitivity to the cluster symmetry.

We report on the experimental results of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electron spin resonance (ESR), and high-field magnetization measurements on a polycrystalline sample of the spin-$1/2$ distorted honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$). Magnetic susceptibility shows a broad peak at about 25~K, which is typical of a low dimensional antiferromagnet, and no long range magnetic order is observed down to 0.6~K in the specific heat measurements. Magnetization curve up to 70~T at 1.4~K shows triple stepwise jumps. Assuming three different exchange bonds $J_{\rm A}$, $J_{\rm B}$ and $J_{\rm C}$ from the structure, the calculated magnetization curve reproduces the observed one when $J_{\rm A}/k_{\rm B} = 43.7~{\rm K}$, $J_{\rm B}/J_{\rm A} = 1$ and $J_{\rm C}/J_{\rm A} = 0.2$ except the magnetization near 70~T, where the observed magnetization indicates another step while the calculated magnetization becomes saturated. The relationship between magnetization plateaus and exchange bonds is discussed based on the numerical calculations.

The layered compound $α$-RuCl$_3$ is composed of a honeycomb lattice of magnetic Ru$^{3+}$ ions with the $4d^5$ electronic state. We have investigated the magnetic properties of $α$-RuCl$_3$ via magnetization and specific heat measurements using single crystals. It was observed that $α$-RuCl$_3$ undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_{t}\,{\simeq}\,150$ K accompanied by fairly large hysteresis. This structural phase transition is expected to be similar to that observed in closely related CrCl$_3$. The magnetizations and magnetic susceptibilities are strongly anisotropic, which mainly arise from the anisotropic $g$-factors, i.e., $g_{ab}\,{\simeq}\,2.5$ and $g_c\,{\simeq}\,0.4$ for magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the $ab$ plane, respectively. These $g$-factors and the obtained entropy indicate that the effective spin of Ru$^{3+}$ is one-half, which results from the low-spin state. Specific heat data show that magnetic ordering occurs in four steps at zero magnetic field. The successive magnetic phase transitions should be ascribed to the competition among exchange interactions. The magnetic phase diagram for $H\,{\parallel}\,ab$ is obtained. We discuss the strongly anisotropic $g$-factors in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and deduce that the exchange interaction is strongly XY-like. $α$-RuCl$_3$ is magnetically described as a three-dimensionally coupled XY-like frustrated magnet on a honeycomb lattice.

Soft resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction (SRXD) at the Ho M$_{4,5}$ edges has been used to study Ho $4f$ multipoles in the combined magnetic and orbitally ordered phase of HoB$_2$C$_2$. A full description of the energy dependence for both $σ$ and $π$ incident x-rays at two different azimuthal angles, as well as the ratio $I_σ/I_π$ as a function of azimuthal angle for a selection of energies, allows a determination of the higher order multipole moments of rank 1 (dipole) to 6 (hexacontatetrapole). The Ho 4f multipole moments have been estimated, indicating a dominant hexadecapole (rank 4) order with an almost negligible influence from either the dipole or the octupole magnetic terms. The analysis incorporates both the intra-atomic magnetic and quadrupolar interactions between the 3d core and 4f valence shells as well as the interference of contributions to the scattering that behave differently under time reversal. Comparison of SRXD, neutron diffraction and non resonant x-ray diffraction shows that the magnetic and quadrupolar order parameter are distinct. The $(0 0 1/2)$ component of the magnetic order exhibits a Brillouin type increase below the orbital ordering temperature T$_Q$, while the quadrupolar order increases more sharply. We conclude the quadrupolar interaction is strong, but quadrupolar order only occurs when the magnetic order gives rise to a quasi doublet ground state, which results in a lock-in of the orbitals at T$_Q$.

We present a pulsed-magnet system that enables x-ray single-crystal diffraction in addition to powder and spectroscopic studies with the magnetic field applied on or close to the scattering plane. The apparatus consists of a single large-bore solenoid, cooled by liquid nitrogen. A second independent closed-cycle cryostat is used for cooling samples near liquid helium temperatures. Pulsed magnetic fields close to $\sim 30$ T with a zero-to-peak-field rise time of $\sim$2.9 ms are generated by discharging a 40 kJ capacitor bank into the magnet coil. The unique characteristic of this instrument is the preservation of maximum scattering angle ($\sim 23.6^\circ$) on the entrance and exit sides of the magnet bore by virtue of a novel double-funnel insert. This instrument will facilitate x-ray diffraction and spectroscopic studies that are impractical, if not impossible, to perform using split-pair and narrow-opening solenoid magnets, and offers a practical solution for preserving optical access in future higher-field pulsed magnets.

Here we report on the synthesis of solid solution (CuCl1-xBrx)LaNb2O7 (0 < x < 1), and its structural and magnetic properties by means of magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, and neutron diffraction studies. The x-dependence of cell parameters follows Vegards law, verifying the uniform distribution of Cl and Br atoms at the halide site, though a more complex structural evolution is inferred from an opposing correlation between the intra- and interlayer cell distances (vs. x). 5%-Br substitution is found to induce antiferromagnetic order with TN = 7 K, consistent with a recent mSR study, and the magnetic structure is collinear, having a significantly reduced moment. Further Br substitution leads to a linear increase in TN up to x = 1. These results indicate that (CuCl)LaNb2O7 is located in the vicinity of the quantum phase boundary.

We have found that a jump anomaly observed in C_p at the ferromagnetic (FM) transition temperature for SrRuO_3 changes into a broad peak by only 5% substitution of Mn for Ru. With further do** Mn, the low-temperature electronic specific-heat coefficient gamma is markedly reduced from the value at x=0 (33 mJ/K^2 mol), in connection with the suppression of the FM phase as well as the enhancement of the resistivity. For x >= 0.4, gamma approaches to ~ 5 mJ/K^2 mol or less, where the antiferromagnetic order with an insulating feature in resistivity is generated. We suggest from these results that both disorder and reconstruction of the electronic states induced by do** Mn are coupled with the magnetic ground states and transport properties.

In contrast, 51V NMR experiments revealed a sharp peak at 1 K in relaxation rate, which indicates that a certain exotic order occurs. Surprisingly, we have observed three "steps" in magnetization as a function of magnetic field, suggesting that at least four liquid-like or other quantum states exist under magnetic fields.

The crystal data of Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ synthesized first in the present work are reported. We performed magnetic susceptibility measurements on this family of Kagome antiferromagnet using single crystals. In the Cs$_2$Cu$_3$MF$_{12}$ systems, structural phase transitions were observed at $T_t = 225$ K, 172 K and 185 K for M = Zr, Hf and Sn, respectively. The magnetic susceptibilities observed for $T > T_t$ are almost perfectly described using theoretical results obtained by exact diagonalization for the 24-site Kagome cluster with $J/k_B = 244$ K, 266 K and 240 K, respectively. Magnetic ordering accompanied by the weak ferromagnetic moment occurs at $T_N = 23.5$ K, 24.5 K and 20.0 K, respectively. The origins of the weak ferromagnetic moment should be ascribed to the lattice distortion that breaks the hexagonal symmetry of the exchange network for $T < T_t$ and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ is magnetically described as a modified Kagome antiferromagnet with four types of neighboring exchange interaction. Neither structural nor magnetic phase transition was observed in Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Its magnetic ground state was found to be a spin singlet with a triplet gap. Using exact diagonalization for a 12-site Kagome cluster, we analyzed the magnetic susceptibility and evaluated individual exchange interactions. Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ has the proper Kagomé layer at room temperature, and undergoes structural phase transition at $T_\mathrm{t}\simeq 185$ K. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ agrees well with the result of the numerical calculation for $S=1/2$ two-dimensional Heisenberg Kagomé antiferromagnet down to $T_\mathrm{t}$ with the nearest exchange interaction $J/k_\mathrm{B}\simeq 240$ K. Although the magnetic susceptibility deviates from the calculated result below $T<T_\mathrm{t}$, the rounded maxima were observed at approximately $T\simeq (1/6)J/k_\mathrm{B}$ as predicted by the theory. Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ undergoes three-dimensional magnetic ordering at $T_\mathrm{N} = 20$ K.

We study the magnetization and the spin dynamics of the Cr$_7$Ni ring-shaped magnetic cluster. Measurements of the magnetization at high pulsed fields and low temperature are compared to calculations and show that the spin Hamiltonian approach provides a good description of Cr$_7$Ni magnetic molecule. In addition, the phonon-induced relaxation dynamics of molecular observables has been investigated. By assuming the spin-phonon coupling to take place through the modulation of the local crystal fields, it is possible to evaluate the decay of fluctuations of two generic molecular observables. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ directly probes such fluctuations, and allows to determine the magnetoelastic coupling strength.

From magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements, it was found that the ground state is a disordered singlet with the spin gap, as predicted from a recent theory. Exact diagonalization for a 12-site Kagome cluster was performed to analyze the magnetic susceptibility, and individual exchange interactions were evaluated.

The results obtained from the exact numerical diagonalization reveal a striking magnetization process with a marked spatial dependence on the applied magnetic field for arbitrary but non-zero single-ion anisotropy. It is demonstrated that the field range, which corresponds to an intermediate magnetization plateau emerging at a half of the saturation magnetization, basically depends on single-ion anisotropy terms as well as a spatial orientation of the applied field. The breakdown of the intermediate magnetization plateau is discussed at length in relation to the single-ion anisotropy strength.

Magnetic systems are fertile ground for the emergence of exotic states when the magnetic interactions cannot be satisfied simultaneously due to the topology of the lattice - a situation known as geometrical frustration. Spinels, AB2O4, can realize the most highly frustrated network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Several novel states have been discovered in spinels, such as composite spin clusters and novel charge-ordered states. Here we use neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering to characterize the fractional magnetization state of HgCr2O4 under an external magnetic field, H. When the field is applied in its Neel ground state, a phase transition occurs at H ~ 10 Tesla at which each tetrahedron changes from a canted Neel state to a fractional spin state with the total spin, Stet, of S/2 and the lattice undergoes orthorhombic to cubic symmetry change. Our results provide the microscopic one-to-one correspondence between the spin state and the lattice distortion.

The magnetization process of an S=1/2 antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice, [Cu_3(titmb)_2(OCOCH_3)_6]H_2O {titmb= 1,3,5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6 trimethylbenzene} has been measured at very low temperatures in both pulsed and steady fields. We have found a new dynamical behavior in the magnetization process: a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization appears in the pulsed field experiments for intermediate sweep rates of the magnetic field and disappears in the steady field experiments. A theoretical analysis using exact diagonalization yields J_1=-19K and J_2=6K, for the nearest neighbor and second nearest neighbor interactions, respectively. This set of exchange parameters explains the very low saturation field and the absence of the plateau in the thermodynamic equilibrium as well as the two-peak feature in the magnetic heat capacity. Supported by numerical results we argue that a dynamical order by disorder phenomenon could explain the transient appearance of the 1/3 plateau in pulsed field experiments.

We present a theoretical and experimental study of a quasi-one-dimensional zigzag antiferromagnet (N_2H_5)CuCl_3, which can be viewed as weakly coupled Heisenberg chains with a frustrated interaction. We first discuss generic features of the magnetic properties of the zigzag spin chain between the nearly single chain case and the nearly double chain case, on the basis of the finite temperature density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. We next show the experimental results for the magnetic susceptibility and the high-field magnetization of a single crystal of (N_2H_5)CuCl_3 above the Neel temperature T_N=1.55K. By comparing the experimental data with the DMRG results carefully, we finally obtain the ratio of the nearest and next-nearest exchange couplings as J_1/J_2=0.25 with J_2/k_B=16.3K. We also investigate the three-dimensional (3D) coupling J' effect by using the mean-field theory combined with the DMRG calculations. The estimated value J' \sim 0.04J_2 supports good one-dimensionality of (N_2H_5)CuCl_3 above T_N.

The static and dynamic magnetic properties of an $S=1/2$ stacked triangular antiferromagnet RbCuCl$_{3}$ with a helical spin structure due to lattice distortion were investigated by susceptibility, high-field magnetization process and ESR measurements. The susceptibilities were analyzed by high-temperature expansion approximation in terms of ferromagnetic intrachain coupling and the antiferromagnetic interchain coupling. The magnetization saturates at $H_{\rm s}\approx 66.8$ T at 1.5 K, the value of which is twice that of CsCuCl$_3$. A small magnetization jump indicative of a phase transition was observed at $H_{\rm c}=21.2$ T $\approx (1/3)H_{\rm s}$ for $H{\perp}c$. ESR modes observed for $H\parallel c$ are well described by the calculation based on the helical spin structure. From the present measurements, the ferromagnetic intrachain and two kinds of antiferromagnetic interchain exchange interactions, and the planar anisotropy energy were determined as $J_0/k_{\rm B}=25.7$ K, $J_1/k_{\rm B}=-10.6$ K, $J_1'/k_{\rm B}=-17.4$ K, and $ΔJ_0/k_{\rm B}=-0.45$ K, respectively.

Susceptibility($χ$) shows a monotonous increase with decreasing temperature (T) and reaches a maximum at about 7 K. In the plot of $χT$ versus $T$, the experimental data exhibit a broad minimum and are fit to the $χT$ curve calculated for the ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chain composed of S=1/2 and 1. From this fit, we have evaluated the nearest-neighbor exchange constant $J/k_B=121 K$, the g-values of Ni$^{2+}$ and Cu$^{2+}$, $g_{Ni}$=2.22 and $g_{Cu}$=2.09, respectively. Applied external field dependence of $χT$ at low temperatures is reproduced fairly well by the calculation for the same ferrimagnetic model.

As the temperature is decreased, the susceptibility exhibits a round maximum at around 120 K and decreases gradually down to 10 K, and then falls down rapidly with a logarithmic curvature which is behavior of the susceptibility of a gapless or a nearly gapless antiferromagnetic chain. Magnetization up to 50 T at 1.4 K shows no or a very small gap in this compound. We have carried out numerical calculations for the $S$=1 antiferromagnetic bond alternating chain with various alternating ratios $α$ and obtained a very good agreement between experiments and calculations for $α$=0.6. We verify experimentally that the gapless point exists around $α$=0.6.
