The bulk photovoltaic effect exhibited by the non-centrosymmetric system gains research interest due to the observed large open-circuit voltage. The ferroelectric systems exhibiting anomalous photovoltaic effect are mostly crystallized with multiphase coexistence. Hence, the computational difficulty in building a multi-phase system restricts the detailed photovoltaic studies through phenomenological and shift current theory. In this work, ferroelectric Ba$_{1- x}$(Bi$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$)$_x$TiO$_3$ (BBKT) oxide is designed to crystallize in single-phase tetragonal symmetry with improved polarization characteristics, and it is found to exhibits large PV response. Both experimental and theoretical studies on BBKT samples reveal ~18% reduction in bandgap compared to the parent BaTiO$_3$. Short-circuit current measured as a function of light intensity and light polarization angle reveal linear and sinusoidal response, respectively. The observed features are in accordance with phenomenological theory. Remarkably, x = 0.125 sample displays ~8 times higher open-circuit voltage (7.39 V) than the parent compound. The enhanced PV effect is attributed to the large shift current along z-direction as evidenced from the additional charge-center shift of valence band occupied by O-2p orbital and conduction band occupied by Bi-6p orbital. Notably, the degenerate Bi-p$_z$ state at conduction band minimum in BBKT favours the large shift current response in the z-direction.

The atomic-scale synthesis of artificial oxide heterostructures offers new opportunities to create novel states that do not occur in nature. The main challenge related to synthesizing these structures is obtaining atomically sharp interfaces with designed termination sequences. Here, we demonstrate that the oxygen pressure (PO2) during growth plays an important role in controlling the interfacial terminations of SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 (SRO/BTO/SRO) ferroelectric capacitors. The SRO/BTO/SRO heterostructures were grown by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The top SRO/BTO interface grown at high PO2 (around 150 mTorr) usually exhibited a mixture of RuO2-BaO and SrO-TiO2 terminations. By reducing PO2, we obtained atomically sharp SRO/BTO top interfaces with uniform SrO-TiO2 termination. Using capacitor devices with symmetric and uniform interfacial termination, we were able to demonstrate for the first time that the ferroelectric (FE) critical thickness can reach the theoretical limit of 3.5 unit cells (u.c.).

We investigated the effects of temperature and magnetic field on the electronic structure of hexagonal RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) thin films using optical spectroscopy. As the magnetic ordering of the system was disturbed, a systematic change in the electronic structure was commonly identified in this series. The optical absorption peak near 1.7 eV showed an unexpectedly large shift of more than 150 meV from 300 K to 15 K, accompanied by an anomaly of the shift at the Neel temperature. The magnetic field dependent measurement clearly revealed a sizable shift of the corresponding peak when a high magnetic field was applied. Our findings indicated strong coupling between the magnetic ordering and the electronic structure in the multiferroic hexagonal RMnO3 compounds.

We investigated the electronic structure of multiferroic hexagonal RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) thin films using both optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. Using artificially stabilized hexagonal RMnO3, we extended the optical spectroscopic studies on the hexagonal multiferroic manganite system. We observed two optical transitions located near 1.7 eV and 2.3 eV, in addition to the predominant absorption above 5 eV. With the help of first-principles calculations, we attribute the low-lying optical absorption peaks to inter-site transitions from the oxygen states hybridized strongly with different Mn orbital symmetries to the Mn 3d3z2-r2 state. As the ionic radius of the rare earth ion increased, the lowest peak showed a systematic increase in its peak position. We explained this systematic change in terms of a flattening of the MnO5 triangular bipyramid.

The polarization hysteresis loop demonstrated the existence of ferroelectricity in our hexagonal DyMnO3 films at least below 70 K. The observed 2.2 uC/cm^2 remnant polarization at 25 K corresponded to a polarization enhancement by a factor of 10 compared to that of the bulk orthorhombic DyMnO3. Interestingly, this system showed an antiferroelectric-like feature in its hysteresis loop. Our hexagonal DyMnO3 films showed an antiferromagnetic Neel temperature around 60 K and a spin reorientation transition around 40 K. We also found a clear hysteresis in the temperature dependence of the magnetization, which was measured after zero-field-cooling and field-cooling. This hysteresis may well have been of spin glass origin, which was likely to arise from the geometric frustration of antiferromagnetically-coupled Mn spins with an edge-sharing triangular lattice.

We measured the transverse and longitudinal components of the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient, which supports the postulate that the magnetoelectric effect comes from direct stress coupling between magnetostrictive NiFe2O4 and piezoelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 grains.

We have investigated the magnetotransport properties of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/BaTiO3 superlattices, grown on SrTiO3 substrate by pulsed laser deposition technique, both with current-in-plane and current-perpendicular-to-the-plane directions. Several features indicate the presence of magnetic inhomogeneities at the interfaces which is independent of BaTiO3 layer thickness variation. First, the magnetic property in the superlattices decreases. Second, a hysteresis in magnetoresistance due to the relaxation of the resistive state is observed. Third, a threshold under an applied magnetic field in the magnetoresistance is seen. Such behaviors are in agreement with the phase separation scenario which could be the possible reason for these magnetic inhomogeneities at the interfaces. On the contrary, the magnetoresistance with the current-perpendicular-to-the-plane direction is mostly attributed to the tunneling effect along with the ordering of the spin at the interface. This study confirms the importance of the interfaces in superlattices that can be used to control novel physical properties in oxide materials.

The coupling at the interfaces of several trilayers has been investigated from magnetization and electronic transport experiments. An increase of La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ layer thickness induces a magnetic ordering in the strain layers and at the interfaces leading to ferromagnetic behavior and enhanced coercivity, while resistivity shows metal-like behaviors. These effects are not observed in the parent compounds, which are antiferromagnetic insulators, opening a path, to induce artificially some novel properties.

We found that both lattice distortion and the corresponding orbital mixing of the ordered orbital state should play an important role in the 2 eV peak suppression. We also found that the 2 eV spectral weight is proportional to the $A$-type antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, which suggests that the magnetic interaction might be sensitively coupled to the orbital mixing.

The superlattices made of ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 (PCMO) and a ferroelectric, namely Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) or BaTiO3, showed enhanced magnetoresistance (MR) at high applied magnetic field, whereas such enhancement was absent in Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, which clearly demonstrates the preponderant role of the ferroelectric layers in this enhanced MR. Furthermore, the absence of enhanced MR in trilayers of PCMO/BST indicates that the magneto-electric coupling which is responsible for MR in these systems is stronger in multilayers than in their trilayer counterparts.

Artificial superlattices designed with ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 insulating layer and ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 layer were grown on (100) SrTiO3 substrates. The magnetotransport properties were measured with the current perpendicular to the plane geometry. An increase in magnetoresistance (MR), with no significant low field effect, was observed as the number of ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 layer thickness increases even up to 9 unit cells. For example, the superlattice [(Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3)10(Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3)9]25 shows 35 % MR at 100 K, though the Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 film was a robust insulator with negligible MR even at high applied magnetic field. This observed large MR cannot be explained by simple interfacial ferromagnetism or by the tunneling magnetoresistance. One possible explanation could be the effect due to the ferroelectric spacer layer and the associated magnetoelectric coupling.

The capacitance and resistive parts of the samples were analyzed from the complex impedance measurements, performed on the samples using a special experimental set-up. The superlattice with larger ferroelectric thickness shows unique characteristics which are not present in the parent ferromagnetic thin film. The superlattice show both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric transitions which is an evidence for the coexistence of both the properties. The high magnetoresistance (40 % at 80K) shown by the superlattice can be attributed to the coupling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric layers, i.e, to the magnetoelectric effect.
