We find systematic signatures suggesting a different superconducting nature for a triple-layered cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ with respect to a double-layer through the properties of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). Our measurements on the current-voltage characteristics reveal that the $c$-axis maximum Josephson current density is sensitive to the superfluid density in outer planes while the critical temperature and the superconducting gap remain unaffected. Switching dynamics of stacked IJJs exhibit that the fluctuation in gauge-invariant phase difference of an IJJ implies that the inner plane completely shields the capacitive coupling between adjacent IJJs, which is essential for mono- and bilayered cuprates.

We report the pressure-dependent optical conductivity spectra of a heavy fermion (HF) compound CeIn3 below the Neel temperature of 10 K to investigate the existence of the HF state in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase. The peak due to the interband transition in the hybridization gap between the conduction band and nearly localized 4f states (c-f hybridization) appears at the photon energy of about 20 meV not only in the HF regime but also in the AFM regime. Both the energy and intensity of the c-f hybridization peak continuously increase with the application of pressure from the AFM to the HF regime. This result suggests that the c-f hybridization, as well as the heavy fermions, exists even in the AFM phase of CeIn3.

Two-dimensionally confined electrons showing unusually large thermopower (S) have attracted attention as a potential approach for develo** high performance thermoelectric materials. However, enhanced S has never been observed in electric field induced two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). Here we demonstrate electric field modulation of S for a field effect transistor (FET) fabricated on a SrTiO3 crystal using a water-infiltrated nanoporous glass as the gate insulator. An electric field application confined carrier electrons up to ~2E15 /cm^2 in an extremely thin (~2 nm) 2DEG. Unusually large enhancement of |S| was observed when the sheet carrier concentration exceeded 2.5E14 /cm^2, and it modulated from ~600 (~2E15 /cm^2) to ~950 μV/K (~8E14 /cm^2), which were approximately five times larger than those of the bulk, clearly demonstrating that an electric field induced 2DEG provides unusually large enhancement of |S|.

Magnéli phase, and rutile TiO2 was performed. The results clearly showed that both the rutile TiO2 and the thin interfacial layer contribute to carrier transport: the rutile TiO2 bulk region (mobility mu~0.03 cm2V-1s-1) and the 1.5-nm thick interfacial layer (mu~0.3 cm2V-1s-1). The effective thickness of the interfacial layer, which was obtained from the S-n relation, was below ~ 3 nm, which agrees well with that of the TEM observation (~1.5 nm), clearly showing that electric field modulation measurement of S-n relation can effectively clarify the carrier transport properties of a bilayer laminate structure.

We report the pressure-dependent optical reflectivity spectra of a strongly correlated insulator, samarium monosulfide (SmS), in the far- and middle-infrared regions to investigate the origin of the pressure-induced phase transition from the black phase to the golden phase. The energy gap becomes narrow with increasing pressure in the black phase. A valence transition from Sm2+ in the black phase to mainly Sm3+ in the golden phase accompanied by spectral change from insulator to metal were observed at the transition pressure of 0.65 GPa. The black-to-golden phase transition occurs when the energy gap size of black SmS becomes the same as the binding energy of the exciton at the indirect energy gap before the gap closes. This result indicates that the valence transition originates from an excitonic instability.

The uniform paramagnetic electronic structure changes to a uniform ferromagnetic structure via an inhomogeneous state with decreasing temperature and increasing magnetic field slightly above the ordering temperature. One possibility of the origin of the inhomogeneity is the appearance of magnetic polaron states.

At high temperatures, the energy of the plasma edge decreased with the increasing valence of the guest atoms $A$ in the Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ cage indicating hole-type conduction. A narrow peak with a pseudogap of 25 meV was observed in SrFe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, while the corresponding peak were located at 200 and 100 meV in the Ru- and Os-counterparts, respectively. The order of the peak energy in these compounds is consistent with the thermodynamical properties in which the Os-compound is located between the Fe- and Ru-compounds. This indicated that the electronic structure observed in the infrared $σ(ω)$ spectra directly affects the thermodynamical properties. The band structure calculation implies the different electronic structure among these compounds originates from the different $d$ states of the $M$ ions.

Temperature-dependent infrared reflectivity spectra of SrFe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ has been measured. A renormalized Drude peak with a heavy effective mass and a pronounced pseudogap of 10 meV develops in the optical conductivity spectra at low temperatures. As the temperature decreases below 100 K, the effective mass ($m^{*}$) rapidly increases, and the scattering rate ($1/τ$) is quenched. The temperature dependence of $m^{*}$ and $1/τ$ indicates that the hybridization between the Fe 3d spins and the charge carriers plays an important role in determining the physical properties of SrFe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ at low temperatures. This result is the clear evidence of the iron-based heavy quasiparticles.

The flat band at ${\bf k}\sim$($π,0$) is found generally deeper in BSCCO. These observations together with the Fermi-surface shapes and the chemical potential shifts indicate that the next-nearest-neighbor hop** $|t^{\prime}|$ of the single-band model is larger in BSCCO than in LSCO and that $|t^{\prime}|$ rather than the super-exchange $J$ influences the pseudogap energy scale.

Abstract:
We introduce an autoregressive-type model of prices in financial market taking into account the self-modulation effect. We find that traders are mainly using strategies with weighted feedbacks of past prices. These feedbacks are responsible for the slow diffusion in short times, apparent trends and power law distribution of price changes.

Intriguing fluctuating dynamics of the mean flow and universal nature of the kinetic energy cascade are elucidated utilizing spectral decomposition and reconstruction. Scaling properties of the structure functions and the energy spectrum are directly calculated without the use of Taylor's frozen-flow hypothesis for the first time. Despite the complex nature of the mean flow, it is found that the energy cascade process exhibits universal laws in thermal turbulence.

Following the work of Okuyama, Takayasu and Takayasu [Okuyama, Takayasu and Takayasu 1999] we analyze huge databases of Japanese companies' financial figures and confirm that the Zipf's law, a power law distribution with the exponent -1, has been maintained over 30 years in the income distribution of Japanese companies with very high precision. Similar power laws are found not only in income distribution of company's income, but also in the distributions of capital, sales and number of employees. From the data we find an important time evolutionary property that the growth rate of income is approximately independent of the value of income, namely, small companies and large ones have similar statistical chances of growth. This observational fact suggests the applicability of the theory of multiplicative stochastic processes developed in statistical physics. We introduce a discrete version of Langevin equation with additive and multiplicative noises as a simple time evolution model of company's income. We test the validity of the Takayasu-Sato-Takayasu condition [Takayasu, Sato and Takayasu 1997] for having an asymptotic power law distribution as a unique statistically steady solution. Directly estimated power law exponents and theoretically evaluated ones are compared resulting a reasonable fit by introducing a normalization to reduce the effect of gross economic change.

For the purpose of elucidating the correlation among currencies, we analyze daily and high-resolution data of foreign exchange rates. There is strong correlation for pairs of currencies of geographically near countries. We show that there is a time delay of order less than a minute between two currency markets having a strong cross-correlation. The cross-correlation between exchange rates is lower in shorter time scale in any case. As a corollary we notice a kind of contradiction that the direct Yen-Dollar rate significantly differs from the indirect Yen-Dollar rate through Euro in short time scales. This result shows the existence of arbitrage opportunity among currency exchange markets.

Analyzing historical data of price indices we find an extraordinary growth phenomenon in several examples of hyper-inflation in which price changes are approximated nicely by double-exponential functions of time. In order to explain such behavior we introduce the general coarse-graining technique in physics, the Monte Carlo renormalization group method, to the price dynamics. Starting from a microscopic stochastic equation describing dealers' actions in open markets we obtain a macroscopic noiseless equation of price consistent with the observation. The effect of auto-catalytic shortening of characteristic time caused by mob psychology is shown to be responsible for the double-exponential behavior.
