Perovskites with Bi or Pb on the A-site host a number of interesting and yet to be understood phenomena such as negative thermal expansion in BiNiO$_3$. We employ hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy of Ni 2$p$ core-level as well as valence band to probe the electronic structure of BiNiO$_3$ and PbNiO$_3$. The experimental results supported by theoretical calculations using dynamical mean-field theory reveal essentially identical electronic structure of the Ni-O subsystem typical of Ni$^{2+}$ charge-transfer insulators. The two materials are distinguished by filling of the Bi(Pb)-O antibonding states in the vicinity of the Fermi level, which is responsible for the Bi disproportionation in BiNiO$_3$ at ambient pressure and absence of similar behavior in PbNiO$_3$. The present experiments provide evidence for this conclusion by revealing the presence/absence of Bi/Pb $6s$ states at the top of the valence band in the two materials.

In $y=0.63$ corresponding to 46% hole do** per Ti, the $3d$ orbital symmetry changes from $a_{1g}$ to $e_g^π$.

From Res-PES across the O K-edge and Cu L-edge, we identify the O 2p and Cu 3d partial density of states (PDOS) and their correlation satellites which originate in two-hole Auger final states. Using the Cini-Sawatzky method, analysis of the experimental O 2p PDOS shows an oxygen on-site Coulomb energy for PLCCO to be $U_{p}$ = 3.3$\pm$0.5 eV and for Bi2212, $U_{p}$ = 5.6$\pm$0.5 eV, while the copper on-site Coulomb correlation energy, $U_{d}$ = 6.5$\pm$0.5 eV for Bi2212. The expression for the Heisenberg exchange interaction $J$ in terms of the electronic parameters $U_{d}$, $U_{p}$, charge-transfer energy $Δ$ and Cu-O hop** $t_{pd}$ obtained from a simple Cu$_2$O cluster model is used to carry out an optimization analysis consistent with $J$ known from scattering experiments. The analysis also provides the effective one band on-site Coulomb correlation energy $\tilde{U}$ and the effective hop** $\tilde{t}$. PLCCO and Bi2212 are shown to exhibit very similar values of $\tilde{U}$/$\tilde{t}$ $\sim$9-10, confirming the strongly correlated nature of the singlet ground state in the effective one-band model for both the materials.

The layered chalcogenide Ta2NiSe5 has recently attracted much interest as a strong candidate for the long sought excitonic insulator (EI). Since the physical properties of an EI are expected to depend sensitively on the external pressure, it is important to clarify the pressure evolution of microscopic electronic state in Ta2NiSe5. Here we report the optical conductivity [s(w)] of Ta2NiSe5 measured at high pressures to 10 GPa and at low temperatures to 8 K. With cooling at ambient pressure, s(w) develops an energy gap of about 0.17 eV and a pronounced excitonic peak at 0.38 eV, as already reported in the literature. Upon increasing pressure, the energy gap becomes narrower and the excitonic peak is broadened. Above a structural transition at Ps~3 GPa, the energy gap becomes partially filled, indicating that Ta2NiSe5 is a semimetal after the EI state is suppressed by pressure. At higher pressures, s(w) exhibits metallic characteristics with no energy gap. The detailed pressure evolution of s(w) is presented, and discussed mainly in terms of a weakening of excitonic correlation with pressure.

We report time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on SnSe which currently attracts great interest due to its extremely high thermoelectric performance. Laser-assisted photoemission signals are observed within $\pm$20 fs of the pump pulse arrival. Around 30-50 fs after the photoexcitation, the conduction band minima are not populated by the photoexcited electrons while the valence bands are considerably broadened. In going from 90 fs to 550 fs after the photoexcitation, the photoexcited carriers are decayed into the multiple conduction band minima. The observed conduction bands are consistent with the band structure calculations. The multiple conduction minima suggest possibility of high and anisotropic thermoelectric performance of n-type SnSe single crystal if it is realized.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectromicroscopy on IrTe2 reveals evolution of mesoscopic striped domains across its first order phase transition at about 280 K. The striped texture of the domains is characterized by a herringbone arrangement of the electronic anisotropy axes. Under further cooling down to 47 K, the striped domains evolve into trijunction domains with the electronic anisotropy in three directions. Each domain harbors quasi one-dimensional surface bands forming Fermi arcs with peculiar spin polarization. The Fermi arc corresponds to an edge state of the two-dimensional bulk electronic states truncated at the surface, indicating an interesting interplay between the symmetry breaking and the surface electronic states.

We present a comprehensive study of CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ using bulk sensitive hard and soft x-ray spectroscopy combined with local-density approximation (LDA) + dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. Correlation effects on both the Cu and Ru ions can be observed. From the Cu $2p$ core level spectra we deduce the presence of magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions hybridized with a reservoir of itinerant electrons. The strong photon energy dependence of the valence band allows us to disentangle the Ru, Cu, and O contributions and thus to optimize the DMFT calculations. The calculated spin and charge susceptibilities show that the transition metal oxide CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ must be classified as a Kondo system and that the Kondo temperature is in the range of 500-1000 K.

It was concluded on the basis of the DFT+U results that the usual band effects are not sufficient to explain this transition. The authors then invoked magnetic mechanisms, including complicated factors such as biquadratic and ring exchanges. We point out that this overcomplicated description is unnecessary, and that the formation of trimers, or breathing kagome lattice in Na2Ti3Cl8, and in many other systems, has very simple, almost trivial explanation basing on the orbital-driven Peierls transition.

The excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ experiences a first-order structural transition under pressure from rippled to flat layer-structure at Ps = 3 GPa, which drives the system from an almost zero-gap semiconductor to a semimetal. The pressure-induced semimetal, with lowering temperature, experiences a transition to another semimetal with a partial-gap of 0.1-0.2 eV, accompanied with a monoclinic distortion analogous to that occurs at the excitonic transition below Ps. We argue that the partial-gap originates primarily from a symmetry-allowed hybridization of Ta-conduction and Ni-valence bands due to the lattice distortion, indicative of the importance of electron-lattice coupling. The transition is suppressed with increasing pressure to Pc = 8 GPa. Superconductivity with a maximum Tsc = 1.2 K emerges around Pc, likely mediated by strongly electron-coupled soft phonons. The electron-lattice coupling is as important ingredient as the excitonic instability in Ta2NiSe5.

The heavy fermion state with Kondo-hybridization (KH), usually manifested in f-electron systems with lanthanide or actinide elements, was recently discovered in several 3d transition metal compounds without f-electrons. However, KH has not yet been observed in 4d/5d transition metal compounds, since more extended 4d/5d orbitals do not usually form flat bands that supply localized electrons appropriate for Kondo pairing. Here, we report a do**- and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission study on 4d Ca2-xSrxRuO4, which shows the signature of KH. We observed a spectral weight transfer in the γ-band, reminiscent of an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). The Mott localized γ-band induces KH with the itinerant \b{eta}-band, resulting in spectral weight suppression around the Fermi level. Our work is the first to demonstrate the evolution of the OSMP with possible KH among 4d electrons, and thereby expands the material boundary of Kondo physics to 4d multi-orbital systems.

The transition metal chalcogenide Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ undergoes a second-order phase transition at $T_c=328$ K involving a small lattice distortion. Below $T_c$, a band gap at the center of its Brillouin zone increases up to about 0.35 eV. In this work, we study the electronic structure of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ in its low-temperature semiconducting phase, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni $L_3$-edge. In addition to a weak fluorescence response, we observe a collection of intense Raman-like peaks that we attribute to electron-hole excitations. Using density functional theory calculations of its electronic band structure, we identify the main Raman-like peaks as interband transitions between valence and conduction bands. By performing angle-dependent RIXS measurements, we uncover the dispersion of these electron-hole excitations that allows us to extract the low-energy boundary of the electron-hole continuum. From the dispersion of the valence band measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we derive the effective mass of the lowest unoccupied conduction band.

The V 1$s$ and 2$p$ HAXPES spectra are consistent with the charge ordering of V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$. The binding energy difference between the V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ components is unexpectedly large indicating large bonding-antibonding splitting between them in the final states of core level photoemission. The V 1$s$ HAXPES spectrum exhibits a charge transfer satellite which can be analyzed by configuration interaction calculations on a V$_2$O$_9$ cluster. The V 3$d$ spectral weight near the Fermi level is assigned to the 3$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals of the V$^{2+}$ site. The broad V 3$d$ spectral distribution is consistent with the strong hybridization between V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ in the ground state. The core level and valence band HAXPES results indicate substantial charge transfer from the V$^{2+}$ site to the V$^{3+}$ site.7 figure

Here, by means of resonant x-ray scattering and absorption experiment, we show that oxygen 2$p$ holes play crucial role in stabilizing this spin-orbital liquid state. These oxygen holes appear due to the "reaction" Sb$^{5+}$$\rightarrow$Sb$^{3+}$ $+$ two oxygen holes, with these holes being able to attach to Cu ions. The hexagonal phase with oxygen 2$p$ holes exhibits also a novel charge-orbital dynamics which is absent in the orthorhombic phase of Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ with Jahn-Teller distortion and Cu 3$d$ orbital order. The present work opens up a new avenue towards spin-charge-orbital entangled liquid state in transition-metal oxides with small or negative charge transfer energy.

However, the key mechanisms are still under debate, and it has currently been a central issue how the couplings between the electron, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom are evolving during photo-induced phase transitions. Here, we develop a new analysis method, frequency-domain angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, to gain precise insight into electron-phonon couplings during photo-induced insulator-to-metal transitions for Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. We demonstrate that multiple coherent phonons generated by displacive excitations show band-selective coupling to the electrons. Furthermore, we find that the lattice modulation corresponding to the 2 THz phonon mode, where Ta lattice is sheared along the a-axis, is the most relevant for the photo-induced semimetallic state.

Among them, alkaline intercalated chalcogenides are model systems showing microscale coexistence of paramagnetic (PAR) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases, however, temporal behavior of different phases is still unknown. Here, we report the first visualization of the atomic motion in the granular phase of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. Unlike the PAR phase, the AFM texture reveals an intermittent dynamics with avalanches as in martensites. When cooled down across the superconducting transition temperature T$_c$, the AFM phase goes through an anomalous slowing behavior suggesting a direct relationship between the atomic motions in the AFM phase and the superconductivity. In addition of providing a compelling evidence of avalanche-like dynamics in a layered superconductor, the results provide a basis for new theoretical models to describe quantum states in inhomogeneous solids.

The polarization dependence of the O 1$s$ and V 2$p$ XAS spectra indicates V 3$d$ orbital order in which $xy$ and $yz$ (or $zx$) orbitals are occupied at the V$^{3+}$ site in the face sharing chains. The occupied $xy$ orbital is essential for the antiferromagnetic coupling between the V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ sites along the chains while the occupied $yz$ (or $zx$) orbital provides the antiferromagnetic coupling between the V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ sites between the chains.

The local structures of 122-type paradium arsenides, namely BaPd$_2$As$_2$ and SrPd$_2$As$_2$, are examined by As K-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements to find a possible correlation between the variation of their superconducting transition temperature and the local structure. The local atomic distances are found to be consistent with average distances measured by diffraction techniques. The temperature dependence of mean square relative displacements reveal that, while BaPd$_2$As$_2$ is characterized by a local As-Pd soft mode, albeit with larger atomic disorder, SrPd$_2$As$_2$ shows anomalous As-Pd correlations with a kink at $\sim$160 K due to hardening by raising temperature. We have discussed implications of these results and possible mechanism of differing superconducting transition temperature in relation with the structural instability.

Using light to manipulate materials into desired states is one of the goals in condensed matter physics, since light control can provide ultrafast and environmentally-friendly photonics devices. However, it is generally difficult to realise a photo-induced phase which is not merely a higher entropy phase corresponding to a high-temperature phase at equilibrium. Here, we report realization of photo-induced insulator-to-metal transitions in Ta2Ni(Se1-xSx)5 including the excitonic insulator phase using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. From the dynamic properties of the system, we determine that screening of excitonic correlations plays a key role in the timescale of the transition to the metallic phase, which supports the existence of an excitonic-insulator phase at equilibrium. The non-equilibrium metallic state observed unexpectedly in the direct-gap excitonic insulator opens up a new avenue to optical band engineering in electron-hole coupled systems.

Charge-density-wave-like superstructure with wave vectors of $\mathbf{Q}$=(1/5 0 $-$1/5), (1/8 0 $-$1/8), and (1/6 0 $-$1/6) are observed on the same sample of IrTe$_2$ at the lowest temperature, the patterns of which are controlled by the cooling speeds. In contrast, superstructures around $\mathbf{Q}$=(1/5 0 $-$1/5) are observed for doped samples (0.02 $\leqq x\leqq$ 0.05). The superstructure reflections persist to higher Pt substitution than previously assumed, demonstrating that a charge density wave (CDW) can coexists with superconductivity. The analysis of the energy-dependent REXS and RIXS lineshape reveals the importance of the Te 5$p$ state rather than the Ir 5$d$ states in the formation of the spatial modulation of these systems. The phase diagram re-examined in this work suggests that the CDW incommensurability may correlate the emergence of superconducting states as-like Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ and Li$_x$TaS$_2$.

Femtosecond time-resolved mid-infrared reflectivity is used to investigate the electron and phonon dynamics occurring at the direct band gap of the excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ below the critical temperature of its structural phase transition. We find that the phonon dynamics show a strong coupling to the excitation of free carriers at the Γ point of the Brillouin zone. The optical response saturates at a critical excitation fluence $F_C = 0.30~\pm~0.08$~mJ/cm$^2$ due to optical absorption saturation. This limits the optical excitation density in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ so that the system cannot be pumped sufficiently strongly to undergo the structural change to the high-temperature phase. We thereby demonstrate that Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ exhibits a blocking mechanism when pumped in the near-infrared regime, preventing a nonthermal structural phase transition.

The x-ray absorption spectra at the Fe L edges for BaFe$_2X_3$ exhibit two components, indicating that itinerant and localized Fe 3$d$ sites coexist. Substantial x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) is observed in polarization dependent spectra, indicating the existence of orbital order or fluctuation in the Fe-ladder even above the Néel temperature $T_N$. Direct exchange interaction along the legs of the Fe-ladder stabilizes the orbital and antiferromagnetic orders in BaFe$_2$S$_3$, while the ferromagnetic molecular orbitals are realized between the rungs in CsFe$_2$Se$_3$.

We show that below the critical excitation density of $F_{C} = 0.2$ mJ cm$^{-2}$, the band gap $narrows$ transiently, while it is $enhanced$ above $F_{C}$. Hartree-Fock calculations reveal that this effect can be explained by the presence of the low-temperature excitonic insulator phase of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, whose order parameter is connected to the gap size. This work demonstrates the ability to manipulate the band gap of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ with light on the femtosecond time scale.

In the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS, mixed valence of Ce was found in the $x=0.0$ sample and the F-do** suppresses it, which is consistent with the results on polycrystalline samples. As for the resonant PES, we found that the Ce $4f$ electrons in both $x=0.0$ and $0.5$ systems respectively form a flat band at 1.0 eV and 1.4 eV below the Fermi level and there is no contribution to the Fermi surfaces. Interestingly, Ce valence in CeOBiS$_2$ deviates from Ce$^{3+}$ even though Ce $4f$ electrons are localized, indicating the Ce valence is not in a typical valence fluctuation regime. We assume that localized Ce $4f$ in CeOBiS$_2$ is mixed with the unoccupied Bi $6p_z$, which is consistent with the previous local structural study. Based on the analysis of the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectra using Anderson's impurity model calculation, we found that the transfer integral becomes smaller increasing the number of Ce $4f$ electrons upon the F substitution for O.

In the rectangular Fermi pockets around X point, the straight portion parallel to the $k_y$ direction is dominated by Bi $6p_x$ character. The orbital polarization indicates the underlying quasi-one-dimensional electronic structure of the BiS$_2$ system. Moreover, distortions on tetragonally aligned Bi could give rise to the band Jahn-Teller effect.

However, the Mn$^{3+}$ component in the $x$ = 0.00 sample gradually increases with the bulk sensitivity of the experiment, indicating that the Jahn-Teller active Mn$^{3+}$ ions are introduced in the bulk due to the site exchange between Li and Ni. The Mn$^{3+}$ component gets negligibly small in the $x$ = 0.05 sample, which indicates that the excess Li suppresses the site exchange and removes the Jahn-Teller active Mn$^{3+}$.

In the hole-doped cuprates, a small amount of carriers suppresses antiferromagnetism and induces superconductivity. In the electron-doped cuprates, on the other hand, superconductivity appears only in a narrow range of high electron concentration ($\sim$ doped Ce content) after reduction annealing, and strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlation persists in the superconducting phase. Recently, Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO) bulk single crystals annealed by a "protect annealing" method showed a high $T_c$ of $\sim$ 27 K for small Ce content down to $x \sim 0.05$. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of PLCCO crystals, we observed a sharp quasi-particle peak on the entire Fermi surface without signature of an AFM pseudogap unlike all the previous work, indicating a dramatic reduction of AFM correlation length and/or of magnetic moments. The superconducting state was found to extend over a wide electron concentration range. The present ARPES results fundamentally change the long-standing picture on the electronic structure in the electron-doped regime.

In addition to the iron-vacancy ordered tetragonal magnetic phase and orthorhombic metallic minority filamentary phase, we have found a clear evidence of the interface phase with tetragonal symmetry. The metallic phase is surrounded by this interface phase below $\sim$300 K, and is embedded in the insulating texture. The spatial distribution of coexisting phases as a function of temperature provides a clear evidence of the formation of protected metallic percolative paths in the majority texture with large magnetic moment, required for the electronic coherence for the superconductivity. Furthermore, a clear reorganization of iron-vacancy order around the T$_{ps}$ and T$_c$ is found with the interface phase being mostly associated with a different iron-vacancy configuration, that may be important for protecting the percolative superconductivity in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$.

We have studied local magnetic moment and electronic phase separation in superconducting K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ by x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy. Detailed temperature dependent measurements at the Fe K-edge have revealed coexisting electronic phases and their correlation with the transport properties. By cooling down, the local magnetic moment of Fe shows a sharp drop across the superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$) and the coexisting phases exchange spectral weights with the low spin state gaining intensity at the expense of the higher spin state. After annealing the sample across the iron-vacancy order temperature, the system does not recover the initial state and the spectral weight anomaly at T$_c$ as well as superconductivity disappear. The results clearly underline that the coexistence of the low spin and high spin phases and the transitions between them provide unusual magnetic fluctuations and have a fundamental role in the superconducting mechanism of electronically inhomogeneous K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ system.

On the other hand, valence-band photoemission spectra and pre-edge peaks of Te 3d absorption edge indicate that Au 5d bands are almost fully occupied and that Te 5p holes govern the transport properties and the lattice distortion. The two apparently conflicting pictures can be reconciled by strong Au 5d/Au 6s-Te 5p hybridization. Absence of a core-level energy shift with Pt substitution is inconsistent with the simple rigid band picture for hole do**. The Au 4f core-level spectrum gets slightly narrow with Pt substitution, indicating that the small Au 5d charge modulation in distorted AuTe2 is partially suppressed.

We investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of fully oxidized BaFeO3 thin films, which show ferromagnetic-insulating properties with cubic crystal structure, by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). We analyzed the results with configuration-interaction (CI) cluster-model calculations for Fe4+, which showed good agreement with the experimental results. We also studied SrFeO3 thin films, which have an Fe4+ ion helical magnetism in cubic crystal structure, but are metallic at all temperatures. We found that BaFeO3 thin films are insulating with large magnetization (2.1muB/formula unit) under ~ 1 T, using valence-band HAXPES and Fe 2p XMCD, which is consistent with the previously reported resistivity and magnetization measurements. Although Fe 2p core-level HAXPES and Fe 2p XAS spectra of BaFeO3 and SrFeO3 thin films are quite similar, we compared the insulating BaFeO3 to metallic SrFeO3 thin films with valence-band HAXPES. The CI cluster-model analysis indicates that the ground state of BaFeO3 is dominated by d5L (L: ligand hole) configuration due to the negative charge transfer energy, and that the band gap has significant O 2p character. We revealed that the differences of the electronic and magnetic properties between BaFeO3 and SrFeO3 arise from the differences in their lattice constants, through affecting the strength of hybridization and bandwidth.

Structural phase separation in A$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ system has been studied by different experimental techniques, however, it should be important to know how the electronic uniformity is influenced, on which length scale the electronic phases coexist, and what is their spatial distribution. Here, we have used novel scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) to study the electronic phase separation in K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, providing a direct measurement of the topological spatial distribution of the different electronic phases. The SPEM results reveal a peculiar interconnected conducting filamentary phase that is embedded in the insulating texture. The filamentary structure with a particular topological geometry could be important for the high T$_c$ superconductivity in the presence of a phase with a large magnetic moment in A$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ materials.

The coupled electronic-structural modulations of the ligand states in IrTe$_2$ have been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS). Distinctive pre-edge structures are observed at the Te-$M_{4,5}$ (3$d$ $\rightarrow$ 5$p$) absorption edge, indicating the presence of a Te 5$p$-Ir 5$d$ covalent state near the Fermi level. An enhancement of the REXS signal near the Te 3$d$ $\rightarrow$ 5$p$ resonance at the $Q\!=\!(1/5,0,-1/5)$ superlattice reflection is observed below the structural transition temperature $T_s\sim$ 280 K. The analysis of the energy-dependent REXS lineshape reveals the key role played by the spatial modulation of the covalent Te 5$p$-Ir 5$d$ bond-density in driving the stripe-like order in IrTe$_2$, and uncovers its coupling with the charge and/or orbital order at the Ir sites. The similarity between these findings and the charge-ordering phenomenology observed in the high-T$_c$ superconducting cuprates suggests that the iridates may harbor similar exotic phases.

The Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectrum of CeOBiS$_2$ exhibits coexistence of $4f^1$ (Ce$^{3+}$) and $4f^0$ (Ce$^{4+}$) state transitions revealing Ce mixed valency in this system. The spectral weight of the $4f^0$ state decreases with the F-do** and completely disappears for $x>0.4$ where the system shows the superconductivity and the ferromagnetism. The results suggest that suppression of Ce-S-Bi coupling channel by the F-do** appears to drive the system from the valence fluctuation regime to the Kondo-like regime, leading to the coexistence of the superconducting BiS$_2$ layer and the ferromagnetic CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ layer.

We show that finite temperature variational cluster approximation (VCA) calculations on an extended Falicov-Kimball model can reproduce angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results on Ta2NiSe5 across a semiconductor-to-semiconductor structural phase transition at 325 K. We demonstrate that the characteristic temperature dependence of the flat-top valence band observed by ARPES is reproduced by the VCA calculation on the realistic model for an excitonic insulator only when the strong excitonic fluctuation is taken into account. The present calculations indicate that Ta2NiSe5 falls in the Bose-Einstein condensation regime of the excitonic insulator state.

ARPES results clearly show a cylindrical (almost two-dimensional) Fermi surface around the zone center. Near the zone boundary, the cylindrical Fermi surface is truncated into several pieces in a complicated manner with strong three-dimensionality. The XPS result and the band structure calculation indicate that the strong Te 5p-Te 5p hybridization between the IrTe2 triangular lattice layers is responsible for the three-dimensionality of the Fermi surfaces and the intervening of the Fermi surfaces observed by ARPES.

The Fermi surfaces of the substituted system are qualitatively similar to the band structure calculations for the undistorted IrTe$_2$ with an upward chemical potential shift due to electron do**. A combination of the ARPES and the band structure calculations indicates that the Te $5p$ spin-orbit interaction removes the $p_x/p_y$ orbital degeneracy and induces $p_x \pm ip_y$ type spin-orbit coupling near the A point. The inner and outer Fermi surfaces are entangled by the Te $5p$ and Ir $5d$ spin-orbit interactions which may provide exotic superconductivity with singlet-triplet mixing.

The calculations show that the local elongation of RuO$_6$ octahedron in an antiferromagnetic insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ induces local orbital change with making the Mott gap narrower. On the other hand, local compression of RuO$_6$ octahedron in a paramagnetic metal Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ induces global antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic states. This result is consistent with a recent systematic $μ$SR study by Carlo {\it et al.} which has revealed the static antiferromagnetic order at low temperature in the Sr-rich region.

ARPES results at 300 K show multi-band Fermi surfaces with six-fold symmetry which are basically consistent with band structure calculations. At 20 K in the distorted phase, whereas the flower shape of the outermost Fermi surface does not change from that at 300 K, topology of the inner Fermi surfaces is strongly modified by the lattice distortion. The Fermi surface reconstruction by the distortion depends on the orbital character of the Fermi surfaces, suggesting importance of Ir 5d and/or Te 5p orbital symmetry breaking.

The effect of high temperature annealing suggests that the compressed phase with lower spin 2+Fe state is directly related with the high Tc superconductivity in the title system. Ir $4f$ core-level photoemission spectra show that Ir $5d$ $t_{2g}$ charge modulation established in the low temperature phase of IrTe$_2$ is suppressed by Pt do**. This observation indicates that the suppression of charge modulation is related to the emergence of superconductivity. Valence-band photoemission spectra of IrTe$_2$ suggest that the Ir $5d$ charge modulation is accompanied by Ir $5d$ orbital reconstruction.
