The magnetic skyrmions generated in a centrosymmetric crystal were recently first discovered in Gd2PdSi3. In light of this, we observe the electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and unveil its direct relationship with the magnetism in this compound. The Fermi surface and band dispersions are demonstrated to have a good agreement with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations carried out with careful consideration of the crystal superstructure. Most importantly, we find that the three-dimensional Fermi surface has extended nesting which matches well the q-vector of the magnetic order detected by recent scattering measurements. The consistency we find among ARPES, DFT, and the scattering measurements suggests the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction involving itinerant electrons to be the formation mechanism of skyrmions in Gd2PdSi3.

Skyrmions in non-centrosymmetric materials are believed to occur due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In contrast, the skyrmion formation mechanism in centrosymmetric materials remains elusive. Among those, Gd-based compounds are the prototype compounds; however, their electronic structure is not uncovered, even though it should be the foundation for elucidating the skyrmion mechanism. Here, we reveal the intrinsic electronic structure of GdRu2Si2 for the first time by magnetic domain selective measurements of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In particular, we find the robust Fermi surface (FS) nesting, consistent with the q-vector detected by the previous resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) measurements. Most importantly, we find that the pseudogap is opened at the nested portions of FS at low temperatures. The momentum locations of the pseudogap vary for different magnetic domains, most likely having a direct relationship with the screw-type spin modulation that changes direction for each domain. Intriguingly, the anomalous pseudogap disconnects the FS to generate Fermi arcs with 2-fold symmetry. These results indicate the significance of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction, in which itinerant electrons mediate to stabilize the local magnetic moment, as the mechanism for the magnetism in the Gd-based skyrmion magnets. Our data also predict that the momentum space where the pseudogap opens is doubled (or Fermi arcs shrink) and thereby stabilizes the skyrmion phase under a magnetic field. Furthermore, we demonstrate the flexible nature of magnetism in GdRu2Si2 by manipulating magnetic domains with a magnetic field and temperature cyclings, providing a possibility of future application for data storage and processing device with centrosymmetric skyrmion magnets.

We investigated the chemical pressure effects on structural and electronic properties of SnTe-based material using partial substitution of Sn by Ag0.5Bi0.5, which results in lattice shrinkage. For Sn1-2x(AgBi)xTe, single-phase polycrystalline samples were obtained with a wide range of x. On the basis of band calculations, we confirmed that the Sn1-2x(AgBi)xTe system is basically possessing band inversion and topologically preserved electronic states. To explore new superconducting phases related to the topological electronic states, we investigated the In-do** effects on structural and superconducting properties for x = 0.33 (AgSnBiTe3). For (AgSnBi)(1-y)/3InyTe, single-phase polycrystalline samples were obtained for y = 0-0.5 by high-pressure synthesis. Superconductivity was observed for y = 0.2-0.5. For y = 0.4, the transition temperature estimated from zero-resistivity state was 2.4 K, and the specific heat investigation confirmed the emergence of bulk superconductivity. Because the presence of band inversion was theoretically predicted, and the parameters obtained from specific heat analyses were comparable to In-doped SnTe, we expect that the (AgSnBi)(1-y)/3InyTe and other (Ag,In,Sn,Bi)Te phases are candidate systems for studying topological superconductivity.

Superconducting transitions were observed at 9.0 and 11.0 K for #1 and #2, respectively, in the temperature dependence of magnetization and electrical resistivity. Specific heat measurements revealed that the Sommerfeld coefficient, Debye temperature, and ΔC/γTc for the obtained samples were close to those reported for conventional Nb3Sn family superconductors.

Nature of the field-induced charge ordered phase (phase II) of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ has been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) and polarized neutron diffraction (PND), focusing on the relationship between the atomic displacements and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moments of Sm. From the analysis of the interference between the non-resonant Thomson scattering and the resonant magnetic scattering, combined with the spectral function obtained from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that the AFM moment of Sm prefers to be parallel to the field ($m_{\text{AF}} \parallel H$), giving rise to large and small moment sites around which the P$_{12}$ and Ru cage contract and expand, respectively. This is associated with the formation of the staggered ordering of the $Γ_7$-like and $Γ_8$-like crystal-field states, providing a strong piece of evidence for the charge order. PND was also performed to obtain complementary and unambiguous conclusion. In addition, isotropic and continuous nature of the phase II is demonstrated by the field-direction invariance of the interference spectrum in RXD. Crucial role of the $p$-$f$ hybridization is shown by resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the P $K$-edge ($1s\leftrightarrow 3p$), where we detected a resonance due to the spin polarized $3p$ orbitals reflecting the AFM order of Sm.

Polycrystalline samples of HEA-type TrZr2 with four different compositions at the Tr site were synthesized by arc melting method. The phase purity and crystal structure were examined by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction profile. It has been confirmed that the obtained samples have a CuAl2-type tetragonal structure. From analyses of elemental composition and mixing entropy at the Tr site, the HEA state for the Tr site was confirmed. The physical properties of obtained samples were characterized by electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements. All the samples show bulk superconductivity with various transition temperature (Tc). The Tc varied according to the compositions and showed correlations with the lattice constant c and Tr-Zr bond lengths. Introduction of an HEA site in TrZr2 is useful to achieve systematic tuning of Tc with a wide temperature range, which would be a merit for superconductivity application.

There appears a positive correlation between $T_c$ and the electronic specific heat coefficient, which increases with increasing the number of $4d$- and $5d$-electrons. This finding indicates that filling of the upper $e_g$ orbitals in the $4d$ and $5d$ bands plays an essential role for the significant enhancement of the superconducting condensation energy. Possible roles played by the $d$ electrons in the strongly correlated electron phenomena appearing in $RTr_{2}$Al$_{20}$ are discussed.

A series of strong anomalies in the thermoelectric power is observed in the heavy fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ under the effect of magnetic field varying in the range from 9.5~T to 13~T. We identify these features with a sequence of topological transformations of the sophisticated Fermi surface of this compound, namely a cascade of Lifshitz topological transitions. In order to undoubtedly attribute these anomalies to the specific topological changes of the Fermi surface, we employ the renormalized band method. Basing on its results we suggest a simplified model consisting of the large peripheral Fermi surface sheet and the number of continuously appearing (disappearing) small "voids" or "necks". We account for the multiple electron scattering processes between various components of the Fermi surface, calculate the corresponding scattering times, and, finally, find the magnetic field dependence of the Seebeck coefficient. The obtained analytical expression reproduces reasonably the observed positions of the maxima and minima as well as the overall line shapes and allows us to identify the character of corresponding topological transformations.

The bulk electronic structure of $T_d$-MoTe$_2$ features large hole Fermi pockets at the Brillouin zone center ($Γ$) and two electron Fermi surfaces along the $Γ-X$ direction. However, the large hole pockets, whose existence has important implications for the Weyl physics of $T_d$-MoTe$_2$, has never been conclusively detected in quantum oscillations. This raises doubt about the realizability of Majorana states in $T_d$-MoTe$_2$, because these exotic states rely on the existence of Weyl points, which originated from the same band structure predicted by density functional theory (DFT). Here, we report an unambiguous detection of these elusive hole pockets via Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations. At ambient pressure, the quantum oscillation frequencies for these pockets are 988 T and 1513 T, when the magnetic field is applied along the $c$-axis. The quasiparticle effective masses $m^*$ associated with these frequencies are 1.50 $m_e$ and 2.77 $m_e$, respectively, indicating the importance of Coulomb interactions in this system. We further measure the SdH oscillations under pressure. At 13 kbar, we detected a peak at 1798 T with $m^*$ = 2.86 $m_e$. Relative to the oscillation data at a lower pressure, the amplitude of this peak experienced an enhancement, which can be attributed to the reduced curvature of the hole pockets under pressure. Combining our experimental data with DFT + $U$ calculations, where $U$ is the Hubbard parameter, our results shed light on why these important hole pockets have not been detected until now.

The carrier dynamics and electronic structures of type-II Weyl semimetal candidates MoTe$_2$ and WTe$_2$ have been investigated by using temperature-dependent optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra. Two kinds of Drude peaks (narrow and broad) have been separately observed. The width of the broad Drude peak increases with elevating temperature above the Debye temperature of about 130 K in the same way as those of normal metals, on the other hand, the narrow Drude peak becomes visible below 80 K and the width is rapidly suppressed with decreasing temperature. Because the temperature dependence of the narrow Drude peak is similar to that of a type-I Weyl semimetal TaAs, it was concluded to originate from Dirac carriers of Weyl bands. The result suggests that the conductance has the contribution of two kinds of carriers, normal semimetallic and Dirac carriers, and this observation is an evidence of type-II Weyl semimetals of MoTe$_2$ and WTe$_2$. The obtained $σ(ω)$ spectra in the interband transition region can be explained by band structure calculations with a band renormalization owing to electron correlation.

We report on the substitution effect of Indium (In) at the Ag site of layered oxychalcogenide La2O2Bi3Ag1-xInxS6. The Tc decreases with increasing In concentration. A hump in the normal state resistivity at an anomaly temperature (T*) near 180 K was observed for all the samples. The anomaly in the resistivity at T* is indicating the possible occurrence of a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition. The T* does not markedly change by In do**. The x dependence of Seebeck coefficient suggests that carrier concentration does not change by In do**. The EDX analysis indicates small amount of Bi deficiency, which suggests that the Bi site is slightly substituted by In. The CDW transition is robust against the In substitution at Ag site, while Tc is decreasing due to the Bi site substitution by In. On the basis of those analyses, we propose that the suppression of superconductivity in the In-doped La2O2Bi3Ag1-xInxS6 system is caused by negative in-plane chemical pressure effect and partial substitution of In for the in-plane Bi site.

In this study, we have developed the La2O2Bi3AgS6-type materials by element substitutions to increase the transition temperature (Tc) and to induce bulk nature of superconductivity. A resistivity anomaly observed at 180 K in La2O2Bi3AgS6 was systematically suppressed by Sn substitution for the Ag site. By the Sn substitution, Tc increased, and the shielding volume fraction estimated from magnetization measurements also increased. The highest Tc (= 2.3 K) and the highest shielding volume fraction (~20%) was observed for La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6. The superconducting properties were further improved by Se substitutions for the S site. By the combinational substitutions of Sn and Se, bulk-superconducting phase of La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S5.7Se0.3 with a Tc of 3.0 K (Tconset = 3.6 K) was obtained.

We recently reported NaSn2As2 as a novel vdW-type superconductor with transition temperature (Tc) of 1.3 K. Herein, we present the crystal structure and superconductivity of new material Na1-xSn2P2 with Tc = 2.0 K. Its crystal structure consists of two layers of a buckled honeycomb network of SnP, bound by the vdW forces and separated by Na ions, as similar to that of NaSn2As2. Amount of Na deficiency (x) was estimated to be 0.074(18) using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Bulk nature of superconductivity was confirmed by the measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat. First-principles calculation using density functional theory shows that Na1-xSn2P2 and NaSn2As2 have comparable electronic structure, suggesting higher Tc of Na1-xSn2P2 is resulted from increased density of states at the Fermi level due to Na deficiency. Because there are various structural analogues with tin-pnictide (SnPn) conducting layers, our results indicate that SnPn-based layered compounds can be categorized into a novel family of vdW-type superconductors, providing a new platform for studies on physics and chemistry of low-dimensional superconductors.

Actinide compounds with 5f electrons have been attracting much attention because of their interesting magnetic and electronic properties such as heavy fermion state, unconventional superconductivity, co-existence of the superconductivity and magnetism. Recently, we have reported a phenomenological analysis on 80 actinide ferromagnets with the spin fluctuation theory originally developed to explain the ferromagnetic properties of itinerant ferromagnets in the 3d transition metals and their intermetallics (N. Tateiwa et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 035125 (2017)). Our study suggests the itinerancy of the $5f$ electrons in most of the actinide ferromagnets and the applicability of the spin fluctuation theory to actinide 5f system. In this paper, we present a new analysis for the spin fluctuation parameter obtained with a different theoretical formula not used in the reference. We also discuss the results of the analysis from different points of views.

LaTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ is most probably a type-I superconductor, which is quite rare among intermetallic compounds. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction suggests "rattling" anharmonic large-amplitude oscillations of Al ions (16$c$ site) on the Al$_{16}$ cage, while no such feature is suggested for the cage-center La ion. Using a parameter $d_{\rm GFS}$ quantifying the "guest free space" of the cage-center ion, we demonstrate that nonmagnetic $RTr_{2}$Al$_{20}$ superconductors are classified into two groups, i.e., (A) $d_{\rm GFS} \ne 0$ and $T_{\rm c}$ correlates with $d_{\rm GFS}$, and (B) $d_{\rm GFS} \simeq 0$ and $T_{\rm c}$ seems to be governed by other factors.

Ambient-pressure-grown LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}\sim$3K possesses a highly anisotropic normal state. By a series of electrical resistivity measurements with a magnetic field direction varying between the crystalline $c$-axis and the $ab$-plane, we present the first datasets displaying the temperature dependence of the out-of-plane upper critical field $H_{c2}^{\perp}(T)$, the in-plane upper critical field $H_{c2}^{\parallel}(T)$, as well as the angular dependence of $H_{c2}$ at fixed temperatures for ambient-pressure-grown LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ single crystals. The anisotropy of the superconductivity, $H_{c2}^{\parallel}/H_{c2}^{\perp}$, reaches $\sim$16 on approaching 0 K, but it decreases significantly near $T_{c}$. A pronounced upward curvature of $H_{c2}^{\parallel}(T)$ is observed near $T_{c}$, which we analyze using a two-gap model. Moreover, $H_{c2}^{\parallel}(0)$ is found to exceed the Pauli paramagnetic limit, which can be understood by considering the strong spin-orbit coupling associated with Bi as well as the breaking of the local inversion symmetry at the electronically active BiS$_2$ bilayers. Hence, LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ with a centrosymmetric lattice structure is a unique platform to explore the physics associated with local parity violation in the bulk crystal.

We report on a systematic study of Hall effect using high quality single crystals of type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2 with the applied magnetic field B//c. The residual resistivity ratio of 1330 and the large magnetoresistance of 1.5\times10^6 % in 9 T at 2 K, being in the highest class in the literature, attest to their high quality. Based on a simple two-band model, the densities (n_e and n_h) and mobilities (μ_e and μ_h) for electron and hole carriers have been uniquely determined combining both Hall- and electrical-resistivity data. The difference between ne and nh is ~1% at 2 K, indicating that the system is in an almost compensated condition. The negative Hall resistivity growing rapidly below ~20 K is due to a rapidly increasing μ_h/μ_e approaching one. Below 3 K in a low field region, we found the Hall resistivity becomes positive, reflecting that μ_h/μ_e finally exceeds one in this region. These anomalous behaviors of the carrier densities and mobilities might be associated with the existence of a Lifshitz transition and/or the spin texture on the Fermi surface.

Superconductivity with exotic properties has often been discovered in materials with a layered (two-dimensional) crystal structure. The low dimensionality affects the electronic structure of materials, which could realize a high transition temperature (Tc) and/or unconventional pairing mechanisms. Here, we report the superconductivity in a layered tin arsenide NaSn2As2. The crystal structure consists of (Sn2As2)2- bilayers, which is bound by van-der-Waals forces, separated by Na+ ions. Measurements of electrical resistivity and specific heat confirm the bulk nature of superconductivity of NaSn2As2 with Tc of 1.3 K. Our results propose that the SnAs layers will be a basic structure providing another universality class of a layered superconducting family, and it provides a new platform for the physics and chemistry of low-dimensional superconductors with lone pair electrons.

Jpn. 55, 3553 (1986)). The basic and spin fluctuation parameters of the actinide ferromagnets are determined and the applicability of the spin fluctuation theory to actinide 5f system has been discussed. Itinerant ferromagnets of the 3d transition metals and their intermetallics follow a generalized Rhodes-Wohlfarth relation between p_eff/p_s and T_C/T_0, viz., p_eff/p_s ~ (T_C/T_0)^(-3/2). Here, p_s, p_eff, T_C, and T_0 are the spontaneous and effective magnetic moments, the Curie temperature and the width of spin fluctuation spectrum in energy space, respectively. The same relation is satisfied for T_C/T_0 < 1.0 in the actinide ferromagnets. However, the relation is not satisfied in a few ferromagnets with T_C/T_0 ~1.0 that corresponds to local moment system in the spin fluctuation theory. The deviation from the theoretical relation may be due to several other effects not included in the spin fluctuation theory such as the crystalline electric field effect on the 5f electrons from ligand atoms. The value of the spontaneous magnetic moment p_s increases linearly as a function of T_C/T_0 in the uranium and neptunium ferromagnets below (T_C/T_0)_kink = 0.32 +- 0.02 where a kink structure appears in relation between the two quantities. p_s increases more weakly above (T_C/T_0)_kink. A possible interpretation with the T_C/T_0-dependence of p_s is given.

Specific heat divided by temperature increases with decreasing temperature even below $T_{\rm C}$ and attains 4.5 J/mol K$^{2}$ at 0.26 K, implying substantial magnetic quantum fluctuations. An analysis of the magnetic entropy suggests the crystalline-electric-field splitting of the Sm $J = 5/2$ multiplet with a $Γ_{7}$ doublet ground state and a $Γ_8$ quartet excited state (the excitation energy of $\sim30$ K). The electrical resistivity shows a power-law behavior with $T^{0.74}$ below 2 K without showing any noticeable anomaly at $T_{\rm C}$. SmPt$_{2}$Cd$_{20}$ is regarded as a rare cubic system that is located in the vicinity of a FM quantum critical point.

From synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinements with anisotropic displacement parameters, we clearly found that the in-plane disorder in the BiSSe layer was fully suppressed for all x. In LaO1-xFxBiSSe, metallic conductivity and superconductivity are suddenly induced by electron do** even at x = 0.05 and 0.1 with a monoclinic structure. In addition, x (F concentration) dependence of the transition temperature (Tc) for x = 0.2-0.5 with a tetragonal structure shows an anomalously flat phase diagram. With increasing x, in-plane chemical pressure is enhanced. For x = 0.6, 0.8, and 1, superconducting transitions with a large shielding volume fraction are observed in magnetic susceptibility measurements, and the highest Tc is 3.8 K for x = 0.8. From low-temperature electrical resistivity measurements, a zero-resistivity state is observed for all the samples, and the highest Tc is observed for x = 0.8. With increasing Se concentration, characteristics of electrical resistivity changes from semiconducting-like to metallic, suggesting that the emergence of bulk superconductivity is linked with the enhanced metallicity. A superconductivity phase diagram of the Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex superconductor is established. In the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS, mixed valence of Ce was found in the $x=0.0$ sample and the F-do** suppresses it, which is consistent with the results on polycrystalline samples. As for the resonant PES, we found that the Ce $4f$ electrons in both $x=0.0$ and $0.5$ systems respectively form a flat band at 1.0 eV and 1.4 eV below the Fermi level and there is no contribution to the Fermi surfaces. Interestingly, Ce valence in CeOBiS$_2$ deviates from Ce$^{3+}$ even though Ce $4f$ electrons are localized, indicating the Ce valence is not in a typical valence fluctuation regime. We assume that localized Ce $4f$ in CeOBiS$_2$ is mixed with the unoccupied Bi $6p_z$, which is consistent with the previous local structural study. Based on the analysis of the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectra using Anderson's impurity model calculation, we found that the transfer integral becomes smaller increasing the number of Ce $4f$ electrons upon the F substitution for O.

The low-temperature properties of CeOBiS$_2$ single crystals are studied by electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Ce 4f -electrons are found to be in a well-localized state split by crystalline-electric-field (CEF) effects. The CEF ground state is a pure $J_z$ = $\pm$ 1/2 doublet, and excited doublets are located far above. At low temperatures in zero field, we observe pronounced $-\log T$ divergence in the specific heat, revealing the presence of quantum critical fluctuations of 4f magnetic moments near a quantum critical point (QCP). Considering that CeOBiS$_2$ is a nonmetal, this phenomenon cannot be attributed to the competition between Kondo and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions as in numerous f-electron-based strongly correlated metals, indicating an unconventional mechanism. We suggest that CeOBiS$_2$ is the first material found to be located at a QCP among geometrically frustrated nonmetallic magnets.

An additional channel for heat transport appears below 30 mK, both in the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, respectively below and above the critical field suppressing the magnetic order. This excludes antiferromagnetic magnons as the origin of this additional contribution to thermal conductivity. Moreover, this low temperature contribution prevails a definite conclusion on the validity or violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law at the field-induced quantum critical point. At high temperature in the paramagnetic state, the thermal conductivity is sensitive to ferromagnetic fluctuations, previously observed by NMR or neutron scattering and required for the occurrence of the sharp electronic spin resonance fracture.

When a superconductor is heated above its critical temperature $T_c$, macroscopic coherence vanishes, leaving behind droplets of thermally fluctuating Cooper pair. This superconducting fluctuation effect above $T_c$ has been investigated for many decades and its influence on the transport, thermoelectric and thermodynamic quantities in most superconductors is well understood by the standard Gaussian fluctuation theories. The transverse thermoelectric (Nernst) effect is particularly sensitive to the fluctuations, and the large Nernst signal found in the pseudogap regime of the underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates has raised much debate on its connection to the origin of superconductivity. Here we report on the observation of a colossal Nernst signal due to the superconducting fluctuations in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$. The Nernst coefficient is enhanced by as large as one million times over the theoretically expected value within the standard framework of superconducting fluctuations. This, for the first time in any known material, results in a sizeable thermomagnetic figure of merit approaching unity. Moreover, contrary to the conventional wisdom, the enhancement in the Nernst signal is more significant with the reduction of the impurity scattering rate. This anomalous Nernst effect intimately reflects the highly unusual superconducting state embedded in the so-called hidden-order phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$. The results invoke possible chiral or Berry-phase fluctuations originated from the topological aspect of this superconductor, which are associated with the effective magnetic field intrinsically induced by broken time-reversal symmetry of the superconducting order parameter.

We have succeeded in growing single crystals of SmPt2Si2 and have performed electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements. The magnetic susceptibility shows that SmPt2Si2 is an Ising magnet with the crystalline-electric-field ground state of Jz=+-3/2. We have found the existence of two magnetically ordered states, i.e., an antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered phase (I) setting in at TN=5.1 K and a field-induced magnetization plateau phase (II). In the phase I, unlike the usual AFM states, a pronounced Curie-Weiss contribution remains in magnetic susceptibility, indicating the existence of "partially disordered" Sm ions. Largely enhanced Sommerfeld-coefficient (350 mJ/K2mol) in the phase I can be attributed to formation of Kondo sublattice with heavy quasiparticles in the partially disordered Sm ions. These findings may reflect substantial magnetic frustrations inherent in SmPt2Si2.

Since the 1985 discovery of the phase transition at $T_{\rm HO}=17.5$ K in the heavy-fermion metal URu$_2$Si$_2$, neither symmetry change in the crystal structure nor magnetic ordering have been observed, which makes this "hidden order" enigmatic. Some high-field experiments have suggested electronic nematicity which breaks fourfold rotational symmetry, but direct evidence has been lacking for its ground state at zero magnetic field. Here we report on the observation of lattice symmetry breaking from the fourfold tetragonal to twofold orthorhombic structure by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at zero field, which pins down the space symmetry of the order. Small orthorhombic symmetry-breaking distortion sets in at $T_{\rm HO}$ with a jump, uncovering the weakly first-order nature of the hidden-order transition. This distortion is observed only in ultrapure sample, implying a highly unusual coupling nature between the electronic nematicity and underlying lattice.

We report a dc magnetization study of the critical phenomenon around the ferromagnetic transition temperature T_C in high-quality single crystals of uranium ferromagnetic superconductors UGe2 and URhGe. The critical exponents, beta for the temperature dependence of the magnetization below T_C, gamma for the magnetic susceptibility, and delta for the magnetic isothermal at T_C have been determined with a modified Arrott plot, a Kouvel-Fisher plot, and the scaling analysis. Magnetization in the ferromagnetic state has strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the two compounds. However, the universality class of the critical phenomena do not belong to the three dimensional (3D) Ising system. Although the values of beta in UGe2 and URhGe are close to those in the 3D magnets, the values of gamma are close to unity, that expected from the mean field theory. Similar critical exponents have been reported previously for the 3D Ising ferromagnet UIr where superconductivity appears under high pressure. The critical behavior may be limited to a very narrow Ginzburg critical region of 1 mK because of the strong itinerant character of the 5f electrons in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe where the mean field behavior of the magnetization has been reported. The unconventional critical scaling of magnetization in UGe2, URhGe and UIr cannot be explained via previous approaches to critical phenomena. The ferromagnetic correlation between the 5f electrons differs from that in the 3D Ising system and this difference may be a key point for the understanding of the ferromagnetism where superconductivity emerges.

We report dc magnetic measurements on YbCu$_2$Si$_2$ at pressures above 10 GPa using a miniature ceramic anvil cell. YbCu$_2$Si$_2$ shows a pressure-induced transition from the non-magnetic to a magnetic phase at 8 GPa. We find a spontaneous dc magnetization in the pressure-induced phase above 9.4 GPa. The pressure dependence of the ferromagnetic transition temperature T_C and the spontaneous magnetic moment m_0 at 2.0 K have been determined. The value of m_0 in the present macroscopic measurement is less than half of that determined via Mossbauer experiment. The difference may be attributed to spatial phase separation between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. This separation suggests that the pressure-induced phase boundary between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic states is of first order. Further, we have studied the magnetic anisotropy in the pressure-induced ferromagnetic state. The effect of pressure on the magnetization with magnetic field along the magnetic easy $c$-axis is much larger than for field along the hard $a$-axis in the tetragonal structure. The pressure-induced phase has strong Ising-type uniaxial anisotropy, consistent with the two crystal electric field (CEF) models proposed for YbCu$_2$Si$_2$.

We present measurements of the resistivity $ρ_{x,x}$ of URu2Si2 high-quality single crystals in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 81~T at a temperature of 1.4~K and up to 60~T at temperatures down to 100~mK. For a field \textbf{H} applied along the magnetic easy-axis \textbf{c}, a strong sample-dependence of the low-temperature resistivity in the hidden-order phase is attributed to a high carrier mobility. The interplay between the magnetic and orbital properties is emphasized by the angle-dependence of the phase diagram, where magnetic transition fields and crossover fields related to the Fermi surface properties follow a 1/$\cosθ$-law, $θ$ being the angle between \textbf{H} and \textbf{c}. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{c}$, a crossover defined at a kink of $ρ_{x,x}$, as initially reported in [Shishido et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{102}, 156403 (2009)], is found to be strongly sample-dependent: its characteristic field $μ_0H^*$ varies from $\simeq20$~T in our best sample with a residual resistivity ratio RRR of $225$ to $\simeq25$~T in a sample with a RRR of $90$. A second crossover is defined at the maximum of $ρ_{x,x}$ at the sample-independent characteristic field $μ_0H_{ρ,max}^{LT}\simeq30$~T. Fourier analyzes of SdH oscillations show that $H_{ρ,max}^{LT}$ coincides with a sudden modification of the Fermi surface, while $H^*$ lies in a regime where the Fermi surface is smoothly modified. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{a}$, i) no phase transition is observed at low temperature and the system remains in the hidden-order phase up to 81~T, ii) quantum oscillations surviving up to 7~K are related to a new and almost-spherical orbit - for the first time observed here - at the frequency $F_λ\simeq1400$~T and associated with a low effective mass $m^*_λ=(1\pm0.5)\cdot m_0$, and iii) no Fermi surface modification occurs up to 81~T.

The observation of cyclotron resonance in ultra-clean crystals of URu2Si2 [S. Tonegawa et al., PRL 109, 036401 (2012)] provides another route besides quantum oscillations to the determination of the bulk electronic structure in the hidden order phase. We report detailed analyses of the resonance lines, which fully resolve the cyclotron mass structure of the main Fermi surface sheets. A particular focus is given to the anomalous splitting of the sharpest resonance line near the [110] direction under in-plane magnetic-field rotation, which implies peculiar electronic structure in the hidden order phase. The results under the field rotation from [110] toward [001] direction reveal that the splitting is a robust feature against field tilting from the basal plane. This is in sharp contrast to the reported frequency branch alpha in the quantum oscillation experiments showing a three-fold splitting that disappears by a small field tilt, which can be explained by the magnetic breakdown between the large hole sphere and small electron pockets. Our analysis of the cyclotron resonance profiles reveals that the heavier branch of the split line has a larger scattering rate, providing evidence for the existence of hot-spot regions along the [110] direction. These results are consistent with the broken fourfold rotational symmetry in the hidden-order phase, which can modify the interband scattering in an asymmetric manner. We also extend our measurements down to 0.7 K, which results in the observation of cyclotron resonance in the superconducting state, where novel effects of vortex dynamics may enter. We find that the cyclotron mass undergoes no change in the superconducting state. In contrast, the quasiparticle scattering rate shows a rapid decrease below the vortex-lattice melting transition temperature, which supports the formation of quasiparticle Bloch state in the vortex lattice phase.

The moderately large electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ = 50 mJ/K$^2$mol demonstrates the contribution of 5$f$ electrons to the conduction band. On the other hand, magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic state roughly follows a Curie-Weiss law with a paramagnetic effective moment corresponding to a localized uranium ion. The crossover from localized to itinerant character at low temperature may occur around the characteristic temperature 150 K where the magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity show a marked anomaly.

At low temperature, the thermoelectric power and the resistivity present several distinct anomalies as a function of field around H_0 ~ 9.5 T when the magnetic polarization reaches a critical value. The anomalies are accompanied with a change of sign from negative at low magnetic field to positive at high field (H>H_0) and are resulting from a Lifshitz-type topological transition of the Fermi surface. A logarithmic divergence of S/T at T \to 0 K just above H_0 (H=11.5 T) is quite comparable to the well known divergence of S/T in the temperature range above the antiferromagnetic order at H=0 T referred to as non Fermi liquid behavior. The transition will be compared to the well characterized Fermi surface change in CeRu2Si2 at its pseudo-metamagnetic transition.

Tateiwa et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 82, 053906 (2011)]. Here, we describe methods to generate pressures above 10 GPa in the mCAC. The efficiency of the pressure generation is sharply improved when the Cu-Be gasket is sufficiently preindented. The maximum pressure for the 0.6 mm culet anvils is 12.6 GPa when the Cu-Be gasket is preindented from the initial thickness of 0.30 to 0.06 mm. The 0.5 mm culet anvils were also tested with a rhenium gasket. The maximum pressure attainable in the mCAC is about 13 GPa. The present cell was used to study YbCu2Si2 which shows a pressure induced transition from the non-magnetic to magnetic phases at 8 GPa. We confirm a ferromagnetic transition from the dc magnetization measurement at high pressure. The mCAC can detect the ferromagnetic ordered state whose spontaneous magnetic moment is smaller than 1 mB per unit cell. The high sensitivity for magnetic measurements in the mCAC may result from the the simplicity of cell structure. The results reveal the emergence of an in-plane mass anisotropy with hot spots along the [110] direction, which can account for the anisotropic in-plane magnetic susceptibility reported recently. This is consistent with the `nematic' Fermi liquid state, in which itinerant electrons have unidirectional correlations.
