Magneto-optical microscopies, including optical measurements of magnetic circular dichroism, are increasingly ubiquitous tools for probing spin-orbit coupling, charge-carrier g-factors, and chiral excitations in matter, but the minimum detectable signal in classical magnetic circular dichroism measurements is fundamentally limited by the shot-noise limit of the optical readout field. Here, we use a two-mode squeezed light source to improve the minimum detectable signal in magnetic circular dichroism measurements by 3 dB compared with state-of-the-art classical measurements, even with relatively lossy samples like terbium gallium garnet. We also identify additional opportunities for improvement in quantum-enhanced magneto-optical microscopies, and we demonstrate the importance of these approaches for environmentally sensitive materials and for low temperature measurements where increased optical power can introduce unacceptable thermal perturbations.

The notion that phonons can carry pseudo-angular momentum has become popular in the last decade, with recent research efforts highlighting phonon chirality, Berry curvature of phonon band structure, and the phonon Hall effect. When a phonon is resonantly coupled to a crystal electric field excitation, a so-called vibronic bound state forms. Here, we observe angular momentum transfer of $δ$Jz = $\pm$1$\hbar$ between phonons and an orbital state in a vibronic bound state of a candidate quantum spin liquid. This observation has profound implications for the engineering of phonon band structure topology through chiral quasiparticle interactions.

CsYbSe$_2$, a recently identified quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate, exhibits strong crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. Here, we identify phonon and CEF modes with Raman spectroscopy and observe strong CEF-phonon mixing resulting in a vibronic bound state. Complex, mesoscale interplay between phonon modes and CEF modes is observed in real space, and an unexpected nearly resonant condition is satisfied, yielding up to fifth-order combination modes, with a total of 17 modes identified in the spectra. This study paves the way to coherent control of possible QSL ground states with optically accessible CEF-phonon manifolds and mesoscale engineering of CEF-phonon interactions.

Magneto-optical sensors including spin noise spectroscopies and magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopies are now ubiquitous tools for materials characterization that can provide new understanding of spin dynamics, hyperfine interactions, spin-orbit interactions, and charge-carrier g-factors. Both interferometric and intensity-difference measurements can provide photon shot-noise limited sensitivity, but further improvements in sensitivity with classical resources require either increased laser power that can induce unwanted heating and electronic perturbations or increased measurement times that can obscure out-of-equilibrium dynamics and radically slow experimental throughput. Proof-of-principle measurements have already demonstrated quantum enhanced spin noise measurements with a squeezed readout field that are likely to be critical to the non-perturbative characterization of spin excitations in quantum materials that emerge at low temperatures. Here, we propose a truncated nonlinear interferometric readout for low-temperature magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements that is accessible with today's quantum optical resources. We show that 10 $\text{nrad}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ sensitivity is achievable with optical power as small as 1 $μ$W such that a realistic $T$ = 83 mK can be maintained in commercially available dilution refrigerators. The quantum advantage for the proposed measurements persists even in the limit of large loss and small squeezing parameters.

Motivated by the possibility of an intermediate U(1) quantum spin liquid phase in out-of-plane magnetic fields and enhanced magnetic fluctuations in exfoliated α-RuCl3 flakes, we study magneto-Raman spectra of exfoliated multilayer α-RuCl3 in out-of-plane magnetic fields of -6 T to 6 T at temperatures of 670 mK - 4 K. While the literature currently suggests that bulk α-RuCl3 is in an antiferromagnetic zigzag phase with R3bar symmetry at low temperature, we do not observe R3bar symmetry in exfoliated α-RuCl3 at low temperatures. While we saw no magnetic field driven transitions, the Raman modes exhibit unexpected stochastic shifts in response to applied magnetic field that are above the uncertainties inferred from Bayesian analysis. These stochastic shifts are consistent with the emergence of magnetostrictive interactions in exfoliated α-RuCl3.

Solid-state single-photon emitters (SPEs) such as the bright, stable, room-temperature defects within hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are of increasing interest for quantum information science applications. To date, the atomic and electronic origins of SPEs within hBN are not well understood, and no studies have reported photochromism or explored cross-correlations between hBN SPEs. Here, we combine irradiation-time dependent measures of quantum efficiency and microphotoluminescence ($μ$PL) spectroscopy with two-color Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry to enable an investigation of the electronic structure of hBN defects. We identify photochromism in a hBN SPE that exhibits cross-correlations and correlated quantum efficiencies between the emission of its two zero-phonon lines.
