Here, we present a comprehensive theoretical interpretation of the observed Hofstadter states by calculating its accurate Hofstadter spectrum. We point out that the valley Zeeman effect, a unique feature of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials, plays a crucial role in determining the shape of the Hofstadter spectrum, due to the narrow bandwidth of the moiré bands. This is distinct from the graphene-based moiré systems. We further predict that the Hofstadter spectrum of the moiré flat band, which was not observed in experiment, can be observed in the same system with a larger twist angle $2^\circ\lesssimθ\lesssim 3^\circ$. Our theory paves the way for further studies of the interplay between the Hofstadter states and correlated insulting states in such moiré lattice systems.

The long-awaited fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) effect recently has been observed in the twisted $\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ homobilayers, causing a great sensation. Here, we theoretically investigate the moiré band structures of a closely related system, the alternating twisted multilayer $\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ (ATML-$\mathrm{MoTe_2}$), where the adjacent layers have opposite twist angles. We illustrate that such ATML-$\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ is a very unique moiré system, exhibiting multiple topological flat bands highly controllable by the layer number and twist angle, which is not only an ideal platform to simulate Hubbard model, but also may host FQAH states. Specifically, an N-layer ATML-$\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ ($N \geq 3$) always possesses $N-2$ topological flat bands near Fermi energy $E_f$, which has an odd-even dependent decomposition rule to understand the behaviors of the moiré flat bands. We predict three intriguing examples: (1) The AT3L-$\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ ($N=3$) has one isolated moiré flat band, which corresponds to a triangular lattice Hubbard model, resembling the twisted TMD heterobilayers. (2) The AT4L-$\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ ($N=4$) has two topological flat bands that are very similar to the twisted $\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ homobilayers, implying the possible existence of FQAH states. (3) When $N>4$, the giant density of states (DOS) induced by the multiple moiré flat bands may induce exotic correlated states.

Electrons residing in flat-band system can play a vital role in triggering spectacular phenomenology due to relatively large interactions and spontaneous breaking of different degeneracies. In this work we demonstrate chirally twisted triple bilayer graphene, a new moiré structure formed by three pieces of helically stacked Bernal bilayer graphene, as a highly tunable flat-band system. In addition to the correlated insulators showing at integer moiré fillings, commonly attributed to interaction induced symmetry broken isospin flavors in graphene, we observe abundant insulating states at half-integer moiré fillings, suggesting a longer-range interaction and the formation of charge density wave insulators which spontaneously break the moiré translation symmetry. With weak out-of-plane magnetic field applied, as observed half-integer filling states are enhanced and more quarter-integer filling states appear, pointing towards further quadrupling moiré unit cells. The insulating states at fractional fillings combined with Hartree-Fock calculations demonstrate the observation of a new type of correlated charge density wave insulators in graphene and points to a new accessible twist manner engineering correlated moiré electronics.

Noncentrosymmetric triangular magnets offer a unique platform for realizing strong quantum fluctuations. However, designing these quantum materials remains an open challenge attributable to a knowledge gap in the tunability of competing exchange interactions at the atomic level. Here, we create a new noncentrosymmetric triangular S = 3/2 magnet CaMnTeO$_6$ based on careful chemical and physical considerations. The model material displays competing magnetic interactions and features nonlinear optical responses with the capability of generating coherent photons. The incommensurate magnetic ground state of CaMnTeO$_6$ with an unusually large spin rotation angle of 127 deg.(1) indicates that the anisotropic interlayer exchange is strong and competing with the isotropic interlayer Heisenberg interaction. The moment of 1.39(1) $μ$B, extracted from low-temperature heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements, is only 46% of the expected value of the static moment 3 $μ$B. This reduction indicates the presence of strong quantum fluctuations in the half-integer spin S = 3/2 CaMnTeO$_6$ magnet, which is rare. By comparing the spin-polarized band structure, chemical bonding, and physical properties of AMnTeO$_6$ (A = Ca, Sr, Pb), we demonstrate how quantum-chemical interpretation can illuminate insights into the fundamentals of magnetic exchange interactions, providing a powerful tool for modulating spin dynamics with atomically precise control.

The realization of spin-orbit-coupled ultracold gases has driven a wide range of researches and is typically based on the rotating wave approximation (RWA). By neglecting the counter-rotating terms, RWA characterizes a single near-resonant spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a two-level system. Here, we propose and experimentally realize a new scheme for achieving a pair of two-dimensional (2D) SO couplings for ultracold fermions beyond RWA. This work not only realizes the first anomalous Floquet topological Fermi gas beyond RWA, but also significantly improves the lifetime of the 2D-SO-coupled Fermi gas. Based on pump-probe quench measurements, we observe a deterministic phase relation between two sets of SO couplings, which is characteristic for our beyond-RWA scheme and enables the two SO couplings to be simultaneously tuned to the optimum 2D configurations. We observe intriguing band topology by measuring two-ring band-inversion surfaces, quantitatively consistent with a Floquet topological Fermi gas in the regime of high Chern numbers. Our study can open an avenue to explore exotic SO physics and anomalous topological states based on long-lived SO-coupled ultracold fermions.

We investigate the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in disordered quasi-one dimensional systems using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Focusing on the case of an interacting spinful Hamiltonian at quarter-filling, we contrast the differences arising in the SIT when the parent non-interacting model features either flat or dispersive bands. Furthermore, by comparing disorder distributions that preserve or not SU(2)-symmetry, we unveil the critical disorder amplitude that triggers insulating behavior. While scaling analysis suggests the transition to be of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type for all models (two lattices and two disorder types), only in the flat-band model with Zeeman-like disorder the critical disorder is nonvanishing. In this sense, the flat-band structure does strengthen superconductivity. For both flat and dispersive band models, i) in the presence of SU(2)-symmetric random chemical potentials, the disorder-induced transition is from superconductor to insulator of singlet pairs; ii) for the Zeeman-type disorder, the transition is from superconductor to insulator of unpaired fermions. In all cases, our numerical results suggest no intermediate disorder-driven metallic phase.

Due to the observed superconductivity, the alternating twisted trilayer graphene (ATTLG) has drawn great research interest very recently, in which three monolayer graphene (MLG) are stacked in alternating twist way. If one or several of the MLG in ATTLG are replaced by a multilayer graphene, we get a double twisted multilayer graphene (DTMLG). In this work, we theoretically illustrate that, if the DTMLG has a mirror symmetry along z direction like the ATTLG, there exists a mirror symmetry decomposition (MSD), by which the DTMLG can be exactly decoupled into two subsystems with opposite parity. The two subsystems are either a twisted multilayer graphene (single twist) or a multilayer graphene, depending on the stacking configuration. Such MSD can give a clear interpretation about all the novel features of the moiré band structures of DTMLG, e.g. the fourfold degenerate flat bands and the enlarged magic angle. Meanwhile, in such DTMLG, the parity becomes a new degree of freedom of the electrons, so that we can define a parity resolved Chern number for the moiré flat bands. More importantly, the MSD implies that all the novel correlated phases in the twisted multilayer graphene should also exist in the corresponding DTMLGs, since they have the exact same Hamiltonian in form. Specifically, according to the MSD, we predict that the superconductivity should exist in the (1+3+1)-DTMLG.

The conventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state relies on the Zeeman effect of an external magnetic field to break time-reversal symmetry, forming a state of finite-momentum Cooper pairing. In superconductors with broken inversion symmetries, the Rashba or Ising-type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can interact with either the Zeeman or the orbital effect of magnetic fields, extending the range of possible FFLO states, though evidence for these more exotic forms of FFLO pairing has been lacking. Here we report the discovery of an unconventional FFLO state induced by coupling the Ising SOC and the orbital effect in multilayer 2H-NbSe2. Transport measurements show that the translational and rotational symmetries are broken in the orbital FFLO state, providing the hallmark signatures of finite momentum cooper pairings. We establish the entire orbital FFLO phase diagram, consisting of normal metal, uniform Ising superconducting phase, and a six-fold orbital FFLO state. This study highlights an alternative route to finite-momentum superconductivity and provides a universal mechanism to prepare orbital FFLO states in similar materials with broken inversion symmetries.

When some of MLGs in the double twisted TLG are replaced by bilayer graphene (BLG), we get a new family of double twisted moire heterostructure, namely double twisted few layer graphene (DTFLG). In this work, we theoretically investigate the moire band structures of the DTFLGs with diverse arrangements of MLG and BLG. We find that, depending on the relative rotation direction of the two twist angles (alternate or chiral twist) and the middle van der Waals (vdW) layer (MLG or BLG), a general (X+Y+Z)-DTFLG can be classified into four categories, i.e. (X+1+Z)-ATFLG, (X+2+Z)-ATFLG, (X+1+Z)-CTFLG and (X+2+Z)-CTFLG, each of which has its own unique band structure. Here, X, Y, Z denote the three vdW layers, i.e. MLG or BLG. Interestingly, the (X+1+Z)-ATFLGs have a pair of perfect flat bands at the magic angle about $1.54^\circ$ coexisting with a pair of linear or parabolic bands, which is quite like the double twisted TLG. Meanwhile, when the twist angle is smaller than a "magic angle" $1.70^\circ$, the (X+2+Z)-CTFLGs can have two isolated narrow bands at $E_f$ with band width less than 5 meV. The influence of electric field and the topological features of the moire bands have been studied as well. Our work indicates that the DTFLGs, especially the (X+1+Z)-ATFLG and (X+2+Z)-CTFLG, are promising platforms to study the moire flat band induced novel correlation and topological effects.

Recent experiments indicate that the Bernal stacked graphene multilayer (BGM) have an interaction induced gapped (or pseudo gapped) ground state. Here, we propose that, due to the electron correlation, the BGM can be induced into a half metallic phase by applying a vertical electric field and do**. The half metallic states in even-layer and odd-layer BGMs have totally different behaviors, due to their different band structures. We systematically calculate the graphene tetralayer (4L-BGM) and trilayer (3L-BGM) as the typical examples of the even-layer and odd-layer BGMs, respectively. In 4L-BGM, we find an interesting phenomenon of electric field induced inversion of the spin-polarized bands. Namely, in the half metallic phase, the spin polarization of the conducting channel and the net magnetic moment are inversed when the applied electric field exceeds a critical value. In 3L-BGM, a remarkable feature is that the inequivalence of the the two sublattices will intrinsically break the degeneracy of the the spin-up and spin-down bands even in the zero electric field case. Our results suggest that 4L-BGM should be an ideal platform to detect the proposed half metallic phase in BGM systems.

Based on the optical Raman lattice technique, we experimentally realize the Qi-Wu-Zhang model for quantum anomalous Hall phase in ultracold fermions with two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We develop a novel protocol of pump-probe quench measurement to probe, with minimal heating, the resonant spin flip** on particular quasi-momentum subspace called band-inversion surfaces. With this protocol we demonstrate the first Dirac-type 2D SO coupling in a fermionic system, and detect non-trivial band topology by observing the change of band-inversion surfaces as the two-photon detuning varies. The non-trivial band topology is also observed by slowly loading the atoms into optical Raman lattices and measuring the spin textures. Our results show solid evidence for the realization of the minimal SO-coupled quantum anomalous Hall model, which can provide a feasible platform to investigate novel topological physics including the correlation effects with SO-coupled ultracold fermions.

Traditional laws of friction believe that the friction coefficient of two specific solids takes constant value. However, molecular simulations revealed that the friction coefficient of nanosized asperity depends strongly on contact size and asperity radius. Since contacting surfaces are always rough consisting of asperities varying dramatically in geometric size, a theoretical model is developed to predict the friction behavior of fractal rough surfaces in this work. The result of atomic-scale simulations of sphere-on-flat friction is summarized into a uniform expression. Then, the size dependent feature of friction at nanoscale is incorporated into the analysis of fractal rough surfaces. The obtained results display the dependence of friction coefficient on roughness, material properties and load. It is revealed that the friction coefficient decreases with increasing contact area or external load. This model gives a theoretical guideline for the prediction of friction coefficient and the design of friction pairs.

Weakly disordered two-dimensional (2D) superconductors can host richer quantum phase transitions than their highly-disordered counterparts. This is due to the insertion of a metallic state in the transition between a superconductor and an insulator. Disorders were predicted to show profound influences on the boundaries surrounding this intermediate metallic phase, affecting the existence of a metallic ground state called Bose metal and the dynamic processes in a quantum Griffiths state. Here we present a study on quantum phase transitions of a clean 2D superconductor, MoS2, under a perpendicular magnetic field as a function of disorder strength that is tuned electrostatically. We found two universal scaling behaviors independent of disorders: a power-law scaling applies for all metallic states, and an activated dynamical scaling characterizes transitions between quantum Griffiths state and weakly localized metal. A study over a range of disorder states in this unexplored clear regime suggests that a Bose metal ground state is expected only after reaching a critical cleanness. Whereas, stronger disorder stabilizes a true 2D superconductivity and enhances the quantum Griffiths phase.

Here $T_v$ appears to match the vortex core explosion condition $d\approx 4.4ξ(T_v)$, where $ξ$ is the coherence length. For $T>T_v$, we observed that a nonlinear current-voltage ($IV$) response (Ohmic at low currents and the power law $V\propto I^β$ at higher $I$) is exponentially dependent on $B^2$. The thermodynamics of the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice is revisited through a linearized spin-wave theory which is well defined at any finite temperature. We re-examine in details the temperature dependence of the free energy, the internal energy, the entropy and the specific heat. Most conclusions of the thermodynamics in previous studies can be reproduced in our linearized spin-wave theory. Specially, our calculation at low temperature $T<J$ agrees quantitatively with the numerical Quantum Monte Carlo simulation and high temperature series expansions.

Abstract:
A perturbation spin-wave theory for the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a square lattice is proposed to calculate the uniform static magnetic susceptibility at finite temperatures, where a divergence in the previous theories due to an artificial phase transition has been removed. To the zeroth order, the main features of the uniform static susceptibility are produced: a linear temperature…

A perturbation spin-wave theory for the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a square lattice is proposed to calculate the uniform static magnetic susceptibility at finite temperatures, where a divergence in the previous theories due to an artificial phase transition has been removed. To the zeroth order, the main features of the uniform static susceptibility are produced: a linear temperature dependence at low temperatures and a smooth crossover in the intermediate range and the Curie law at high temperatures. When the leading corrections from the spin-wave interactions are included, the resulting spin susceptibility in the full temperature range is in agreement with the numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations and high-temperature series expansions.

In this paper, we numerically study the bound electron states induced by long range Coulomb impurity in gapped graphene and the quasi-bound states in supercritical region based on the lattice model. We present a detailed comparison between our numerical simulations and the prediction of the continuum model which is described by the Dirac equation in (2+1)-dimensional Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). We also use the Fano's formalism to investigate the quasi-bound state development and design an accessible experiments to test the decay of the supercritical vacuum in the gapped graphene.
