Controlled engineering of vortex pinning sites in copper-oxide superconductors is a critical issue in manufacturing devices based on magnetic flux quanta. To address this, we employed a focused He-ion beam (He-FIB) to irradiate thin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films and create ultradense hexagonal arrays of defects with lattice spacings as small as 20 nm. Critical current and magnetoresistance measurements demonstrate efficient pinning by an unprecedentedly high matching field of 6 T visible in a huge temperature range from the critical temperature $T_c$ down to 2 K. These results show that He-FIB irradiation provides excellent opportunities for the development and application of superconducting fluxonic devices based on Abrikosov vortices. In particular, our findings suggest that such devices can operate at temperatures far below $T_c$, where superconductivity is robust.

The relevant length scales for superconductivity are of the order of nanometers. By confining the superconducting condensate to such dimensions, many physical properties change substantially, and novel phenomena emerge, which are absent in the pristine material. We discuss various methods of creating artificial nanostructures by top-down approaches in metallic and copper-oxide superconductors and their applications. Such nanostructures can be used to control magnetic flux quanta in superconductors, anchoring them to engineered defects to avoid dissipation, guiding their motion, or building artificial flux-quanta arrangements. Nanopatterned superconductors are essential for creating model systems for basic research and enable building almost dissipationless and ultrafast electronic devices and highly sensitive sensors.

Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+d (Bi-2212) thin films with thicknesses less than 50 nm (<20 unit cells) are grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) onto (001) LaAlO3 (LAO) single crystal substrates. Phase-pure and smooth c-axis oriented Bi-2212 films with optimal oxygen do**, critical temperature Tc0 up to 86 K, and critical current density Jc(60 K) above 1 MA/cm2 are obtained for samples that are annealed in situ at temperatures below 700 °C. At higher temperature Bi-2212 films on LAO substrates partially decompose to non-superconducting impurity phases, while films on MgO and SrTiO3 substrates are stable. The broadening of Tc of the metal-to-superconductor resistive phase transition in magnetic fields is much larger for thin films of Bi-2212 as compared to YBa2Cu3O7. The magnetic field-induced suppression of Tc0 is stronger for Bi-2212 films containing impurity phases as compared to the phase-pure Bi-2212 films. The degradation of LAO substrate crystals after several steps of deposition and chemical removal of the Bi-2212 layer is investigated. New, commercially prepared substrates provide Bi-2212 films with smallest surface roughness (3 nm) and strong out-of-plane texture. However, thin films of almost the same quality are obtained on re-used LAO substrates that are mechanically polished after the chemical etching.

The competition between intrinsic disorder in superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) thin films and an ultradense triangular lattice of cylindrical pinning centers spaced at 30 nm intervals results in an ordered Bose glass phase of vortices. The samples were created by scanning the focused beam of a helium-ion microscope over the surface of the YBCO thin film to form columns of point defects where superconductivity was locally suppressed. The voltage-current isotherms reveal critical behavior and scale in the vicinity of the second-order glass transition. The latter exhibits a distinct peak in melting temperature ($T_g$) vs. applied magnetic field ($B_a$) at the magnetic commensurability field, along with a sharp rise in the lifetimes of glassy fluctuations. Angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements in constant-Lorentz-force geometry unveil a strong increase in anisotropy compared to a pristine reference film where the density of vortices matches that of the columnar defects. The pinning is therefore, dominated by the magnetic-field component parallel to the columnar defects, exposing its one-dimensional character. These results support the idea of an ordered Bose glass phase.

The maximal speed $v^\ast$ for magnetic flux quanta is determined by the energy relaxation of unpaired electrons and is thus essential for superconducting microstrip single-photon detectors (SMSPDs). However, the deduction of $v^\ast$ from the current-voltage ($I$-$V$) curves at zero magnetic field is hindered by the unknown number of vortices, $n_\mathrm{v}$, as a small number of fast-moving vortices can induce the same voltage as a large number of slow-moving ones. Here, we introduce an approach for the quantitative determination of $n_\mathrm{v}$ and $v^\ast$. The idea is based on the Aslamazov and Larkin prediction of kinks in the $I$-$V$ curves of wide and short superconducting constrictions when the number of fluxons crossing the constriction is increased by one. We realize such conditions in wide MoSi thin strips with slits milled by a focused ion beam and reveal quantum effects in a macroscopic system. By observing kinks in the $I$-$V$ curves with increase of the transport current, we evidence a crossover from a single- to multi-fluxon dynamics and deduce $v^\ast\simeq12\,$km/s. Our experimental observations are augmented with numerical modeling results which reveal a transition from a vortex chain over a vortex jet to a vortex river with increase of $n_\mathrm{v}$ and the vortex velocity. Our findings are essential for the development of 1D and 2D few-fluxon devices and provide a demanded approach for the deduction of $v^\ast$ at the SMSPD operation conditions.

At sufficiently large transport currents $I_\mathrm{tr}$, a defect at the edge of a superconducting strip acts as a gate for the vortices entering into it. These vortices form a jet, which is narrow near the defect and expands due to the repulsion of vortices as they move to the opposite edge of the strip, giving rise to a transverse voltage $V_\perp$. Here, relying upon the equation of vortex motion under competing vortex-vortex and $I_\mathrm{tr}$-vortex interactions, we derive the vortex jet shapes in narrow ($ξ\ll w\lesssimλ_\mathrm{eff}$) and wide ($w\ggλ_\mathrm{eff}$) strips [$ξ$: coherence length, $w$: strip width, $λ_\mathrm{eff}$: effective penetration depth]. We predict a nonmonotonic dependence $V_\perp(I_\mathrm{tr})$ which can be measured with Hall voltage leads placed on the line $V_1V_2$ at a small distance $l$ apart from the edge defect and which changes its sign upon $l\rightarrow -l$ reversal. For narrow strips, we compare the theoretical predictions with experiment, by fitting the $V_\perp(I_\mathrm{tr},l)$ data for $1\,μ$m-wide MoSi strips with single edge defects milled by a focused ion beam at distances $l = 16$-$80$\,nm from the line $V_1V_2$. For wide strips, the derived magnetic-field dependence of the vortex jet shape is in line with the recent experimental observations for vortices moving in Pb bridges with a narrowing. Our findings are augmented with the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations which reproduce the calculated vortex jet shapes and the $V_\perp(I_\mathrm{tr},l)$ maxima. Furthermore, with increase of $I_\mathrm{tr}$, the numerical modeling unveils the evolution of vortex jets to vortex rivers, complementing the analytical theory in the entire range of $I_\mathrm{tr}$.

Ultra-fast vortex motion has recently become a subject of extensive investigations, triggered by the fundamental question regarding the ultimate speed limits for magnetic flux quanta and enhancements of single-photon detectors. In this regard, the current-biased quench of a dynamic flux-flow regime - flux-flow instability (FFI) - has turned into a widely used method for the extraction of information about the relaxation of quasiparticles (unpaired electrons) in the superconductor. However, the large relaxation times $τ_ε$ deduced from FFI for many superconductors are often inconsistent with the fast relaxation processes implied by their single-photon counting capability. Here, we investigate FFI in $15$ nm-thick $182$ $μ$m-wide MoSi strips with rough and smooth edges produced by laser etching and milling by a focused ion beam. For the strip with smooth edges we deduce, from the current-voltage ($I$-$V$) curve measurements, a factor of 3 larger critical currents $I_\mathrm{c}$, a factor of 20 higher maximal vortex velocities of 20 km/s, and a factor of 40 shorter $τ_ε$. We argue that for the deduction of the intrinsic $τ_ε$ of the material from the $I$-$V$ curves, utmost care should be taken regarding the edge and sample quality and such a deduction is justified only if the field dependence of $I_\mathrm{c}$ points to the dominating edge pinning of vortices.

The resistivity and the Hall effect in the copper-oxide high-temperature superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) are remarkably anisotropic. Using a thin film of YBCO grown on an off-axis cut SrTiO$_3$ substrate allows one to investigate these anisotropic transport properties in a planar and well-defined sample geometry employing a homogeneous current density. In the normal state, the Hall voltage probed parallel to the copper-oxide layers is positive and strongly temperature dependent, whereas the out-of-plane Hall voltage is negative and almost temperature independent. The results confirm previous measurements on single crystals by an entirely different measurement method and demonstrate that vicinal thin films might be also useful for investigations of other layered nanomaterials.

Thin films of the high-temperature superconductor HgBa$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{6+δ}$ have been prepared on SrTiO$_3$ substrates by pulsed-laser deposition of precursor films and subsequent annealing in mercury-vapor atmosphere. The microstructural properties of such films can vary considerably and have been analyzed by x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Whereas the resistivity is significantly enhanced in samples with coarse-grained structure, the Hall effect shows little variation. This disparity is discussed based on models for transport properties in granular materials. We find that, despite of the morphological variation, all samples have similar superconducting properties. The critical temperatures $T_c \sim 121.2$ K $\dots 122.0$ K, resistivity, and Hall data indicate that the samples are optimally doped. The analyses of superconducting order parameter fluctuations in zero and finite magnetic fields yield the in-plane $ξ_{ab}(0) \sim 2.3$ nm $\dots 2.8$ nm and out-of-plane $ξ_{c}(0) \sim 0.17$ nm $ \dots 0.24$ nm Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths at zero temperature. Hall measurements provide estimates of carrier scattering defects in the normal state and vortex pinning properties in the superconducting state inside the grains.

The angular dependence of magnetic-field commensurability effects in thin films of the cuprate high-critical-temperature superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) with an artificial pinning landscape is investigated. Columns of point defects are fabricated by two different methods of ion irradiation -- scanning the focused 30 keV ion beam in a helium ion microscope or employing the wide-field 75 keV He$^+$ beam of an ion implanter through a stencil mask. Simulations of the ion-target interactions and the resulting collision cascades reveal that with both methods square arrays of defect columns with sub-$μ$m spacings can be created. They consist of dense point-defect clusters, which act as pinning centers for Abrikosov vortices. This is verified by the measurement of commensurable peaks of the critical current and related minima of the flux-flow resistance vs magnetic field at the matching fields. In oblique magnetic fields the matching features are exclusively governed by the component of the magnetic field parallel to the axes of the columnar defects, which confirms that the magnetic flux is penetrated along the defect columns. We demonstrate that the latter dominate the pinning landscape despite of the strong intrinsic pinning in thin YBCO films.

Magnetic fields penetrate a type-II superconductor as magnetic flux quanta, called vortices. In a clean superconductor they arrange in a hexagonal lattice, while by adding periodic artificial pinning centers many other arrangements can be realized. Using the focused beam of a helium ion microscope we have fabricated periodic patterns of dense pinning centers with spacings as small as 70 nm in thin films of the cuprate superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$. In these ultradense kagomé-like patterns, the voids lead to magnetic caging of vortices, resulting in unconventional commensurability effects that manifest themselves as peaks in the critical current and minima in the resistance versus applied magnetic field up to $\sim 0.4\,$T. The various vortex patterns at different magnetic fields are analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations of vortex motion, and the magnetic field dependence of the critical current is confirmed. These findings open the way for a controlled manipulation of vortices in cuprate superconductors by artificial sub-100 nm pinning landscapes.

The commensurate arrangement of magnetic flux quanta with the artificial defect lattice is confirmed by maxima of the critical current and minima of the resistance, respectively. The magnetic field dependence of the transverse voltage reveals a commensurability effect characterized by a narrow peak of the Hall coefficient with reversed polarity compared to the background signal. This signature of vortex matching disappears at larger vortex velocities substantiating its close connection with enhanced pinning of vortices at the periodic pinning landscape.

They are fabricated by irradiation with 75 keV He$^+$ ions through a stencil mask. Peaks of the critical current reveal the commensurate trap** of vortices in domains near the edges of the sample. Upon ram** an external magnetic field, the positions of the critical current peaks are shifted from their equilibrium values to lower magnetic fields in virgin and to higher fields in field-saturated down-sweep curves, respectively. Based on previous theoretical predictions, this irreversibility is interpreted as a nonuniform, terrace-like critical state, in which individual domains are occupied by a constant number of vortices per pinning site. The magnetoresistance, probed at low current densities, is hysteretic and angle dependent and exhibits minima that correspond to the peaks of the critical current. The minima's positions scale with the component of the magnetic field parallel to the axes of the CDs, as long as the tilted vortices can be accommodated within the CDs. This behavior, different from unirradiated films, confirms that the CDs dominate the pinning.

Pronounced peaks in the critical current and corresponding minima in the resistance demonstrate the commensurate arrangement of flux quanta with the artificial pinning landscape, despite the strong intrinsic pinning in epitaxial YBCO films. Whereas these vortex matching signatures are exactly at predicted values in field-cooled experiments, they are displaced in zero-field cooled, magnetic-field ramped experiments, conserving the equidistance of the matching peaks and minima. Coordination polymerization leads to various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in which symmetrical metal nodes exposed to nano voids lead to unique physical properties and chemical functionalities. One of the challenges towards their applications as porous materials is to make MOFs optimally conductive to be used as electronic components. Here, we demonstrate that Co-MOF-74, a honeycomb nano{framework with one{dimensionally arranged cobalt atoms advances its physical properties by accommodating Tetracyanochinodimethan (TCNQ), an acceptor molecule. Strong intermolecular charge transfer narrows the optical band gap down to 1.5 eV of divalent TCNQ and enhances the electrical conduction, which allows the MOF to be utilized for resistive gas- and photo-sensing. It is found that the resistivity caused by the thermal phonons obeys Bloch-Grüneisen law from $\sim$90 to 300\,K, while only the diffusive thermopower, which varies linearly with temperature from 300 down to 10\,K, can be observed. The phonon-drag thermopower is completely suppressed due to the long electron-phonon relaxation time in the compound. These observations, together with the temperature independent characteristic of carrier concentration, indicate that the conduction electron in F-doped SnO$_2$ films behaves essentially like a free electron. At low temperatures, the electron-electron scattering dominates over the electron-phonon scattering and governs the inelastic scattering process. The theoretical predicated scattering rates for both large- and small-energy-transfer electron-electron scattering processes, which are negligibly weak in three-dimensional disordered conventional conductors, are quantitatively tested in this lower carrier concentration and free-electron-like highly degenerate semiconductor.

Investigations of the resistivity and the Hall effect as a function of electric field and temperature in the normal state and upper part of the superconducting transition of an optimally doped, very thin film of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ are reported. Using a fast pulsed-current technique allowed to reduce the self-heating of the sample and to reach electric fields up to 1 kV/cm. An intrinsic non-Ohmic behavior of the Hall conductivity above the critical temperature that appears to originate from two different, partially counteracting effects is revealed. The major contribution stems from the suppression of Aslamazov-Larkin superconducting fluctuations in high electric fields.

Superconducting compounds of the family Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O have been the subject of intense study since the current record-holder for the highest critical temperature of a superconductor belongs to this class of materials. Thin films of the compound with two adjacent copper-oxide layers and a critical temperature of about 120 K were prepared by a two-step process that consists of the pulsed-laser deposition of precursor films and the subsequent annealing in mercury-vapor atmosphere. Like some other high-temperature superconductors, Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O exhibits a specific anomaly of the Hall effect, a double-sign change of the Hall coefficient close to the superconducting transition. We have investigated this phenomenon by measurements of the Hall effect at different angles between the magnetic field direction and the crystallographic c-axis. The results concerning the upper part of the transition, where the first sign change occurs, are discussed in terms of the renormalized fluctuation model for the Hall conductivity, adapted through the field rescaling procedure in order to take into account the arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field.

The non-Ohmic effect of a high electric field on the out-of-plane magneto-conductivity of a layered superconductor near the superconducting transition is studied in the frame of the Langevin approach to the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation. The transverse fluctuation conductivity is computed in the self-consistent Hartree approximation for an arbitrarily strong electric field and a magnetic field perpendicular to the layers. Our results indicate that high electric fields can be effectively used to suppress the out-of-plane fluctuation conductivity in high-temperature superconductors and a significant broadening of the transition induced by a strong electric field is predicted. Extensions of the results are provided for the case when the electric field is applied at an arbitrary angle with respect to the layers, as well as for the three-dimensional anisotropic regime of a strong interlayer coupling.

Low temperature scanning tunneling microscope images and spectroscopic data have been obtained on subnanometer size Pb clusters fabricated using the technique of buffer layer assisted growth. Discrete energy levels were resolved in current-voltage characteristics as current peaks rather than current steps. Distributions of peak voltage spacings and peak current heights were consistent with Wigner-Dyson and Porter-Thomas distributions respectively, suggesting the relevance of random matrix theory to the description of the electronic eigenstates of the clusters. The observation of peaks rather than steps in the current-voltage characteristics is attributed to a resonant tunneling process involving the discrete energy levels of the cluster, the tip, and the states at the interface between the cluster and the substrate surface.

The excess Hall conductivity, resulting from thermal fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter, is calculated for a layered superconductor for an arbitrarily strong in-plane electric field and a perpendicular magnetic field in the frame of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory. The fluctuation Hall conductivity is suppressed in high electric fields much stronger than the longitudinal one. For high-temperature superconductors we predict a pronounced non-Ohmic behavior of the excess Hall effect near the critical temperature in moderate magnetic fields and electric fields of the order of 100 V/cm.

The data are compared to the full, quantitative expressions based on the renormalized fluctuation model for the Hall conductivity. The model offers a satisfactory understanding of the experimental results, for moderate fields and temperatures near the critical region, provided that the inhomogeneity of the critical temperature distribution is also taken into account. We also propose an approach how vortex pinning that strongly affects the magnitude of the Hall coefficient can be incorporated in the model.

The paraconductivity, originating from critical superconducting order-parameter fluctuations in the vicinity of the critical temperature in a layered superconductor is calculated in the frame of the self-consistent Hartree approximation, for an arbitrarily strong electric field and zero magnetic field. The paraconductivity diverges less steep towards the critical temperature in the Hartree approximation than in the Gaussian one and it shows a distinctly enhanced variation with the electric field. Our results indicate that high electric fields can be effectively used to suppress order-parameter fluctuations in high-temperature superconductors.

At high fields, a sizeable Nernst signal was found to persist in presence of a field-induced non-metallic resistivity. By simultaneously measuring resistivity and the Nernst coefficient, we extract the entropy of vortex cores in the vicinity of this field-induced superconductor-insulator transition. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the thermo-electric Hall angle provides strong constraints on the possible origins of the finite Nernst signal above $T_c$, as recently discovered by Xu et al.

In high transport current densities, or with B tilted off the twin boundaries by 5 degrees, the second sign reversal vanishes. The power-law scaling of the Hall conductivity to the longitudinal conductivity in the mixed state is strongly modified in the regime of the second sign reversal. Our observations are interpreted as strong, disorder-type dependent vortex pinning and confirm that the Hall conductivity in high temperature superconductors is not independent of pinning.
