Crystal and magnetic structures of the mineral centennialite CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O are investigated by means of synchrotron x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements complemented by density functional theory (DFT) and pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) calculations. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O crystallizes in the $P\bar{3}m1$ space group and Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a geometrically perfect kagome network with antiferromagnetic $J_1$. No intersite disorder between Cu$^{2+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$ ions is detected. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O enters a magnetic long-range ordered state below $T_\text{N}=7.2$~K, and the $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ magnetic structure with negative vector spin chirality is obtained. The ordered moment at 0.3~K is suppressed to $0.58(2)μ_\text{B}$. Our DFT calculations indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic $J_2$ and ferromagnetic $J_d$ superexchange couplings of a strength which places the system at the crossroads of three magnetic orders (at the classical level) and a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ PFFRG analysis shows a dominance of $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ type magnetic correlations, consistent with and indicating proximity to the observed $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ spin structure. The results suggest that this material is located close to a quantum critical point and is a good realization of a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$ kagome antiferromagnet.

The successful synthesis of the antiperovskite phase is further confirmed by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. These results strongly suggest that antiperovskite-oxide films can be directly grown on substrates from the target material using a PLD technique.

Rigorous theoretical studies provide an insight into the magnetic state of K$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$: an EST cluster makes a triplet in the ground state and one-dimensional chain of the EST induces a cluster-based Haldane state. We predict that the cluster-based Haldene state emerges whenever the number of tetrahedra in the EST is $even$.

The phase diagram of LaFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_x$O system has been extensively studied through hole- and electron-do** as well as As/P-substitution. It has been revealed that there are three different superconducting phases with different Fermi surface (FS) topologies and thus with possibly different pairing glues. One of them is well understood as spin fluctuation-mediated superconductivity within a FS nesting scenario. Another one with the FSs in a bad nesting condition must be explained in a different context such as orbital or spin fluctuation in strongly correlated electronic system. In both phases, $T$-linear resistivity was commonly observed when the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ becomes the highest value, indicating that the strength of bosonic fluctuation determines $T_{\rm c}$. In the last superconducting phase, the nesting condition of FSs and the related bosonic fluctuation are moderate. Variety of phase diagram characterizes the multiple orbital nature of the iron-based superconductors which are just near the boundary between weak and strong correlation regimes.

K$_3$Cu$_3$AlO$_2$(SO$_4$)$_4$ is a highly one-dimensional spin-1/2 inequilateral diamond-chain antiferromagnet. Spinon continuum and spin-singlet dimer excitations are observed in the inelastic neutron scattering spectra, which is in excellent agreement with a theoretical prediction: a dimer-monomer composite structure, where the dimer is caused by strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling and the monomer forms an almost isolated quantum AFM chain controlling low-energy excitations. Moreover, muon spin rotation/relaxation spectroscopy shows no long-range ordering down to 90~mK, which is roughly three orders of magnitude lower than the exchange interaction of the quantum AFM chain. K$_3$Cu$_3$AlO$_2$(SO$_4$)$_4$ is, thus, regarded as a compound that exhibits a Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid behavior at low temperatures close to the ground state.

We have discovered a novel candidate for a spin liquid state in a ruthenium oxide composed of dimers of $S = $ 3/2 spins of Ru$^{5+}$,Ba$_3$ZnRu$_2$O$_9$. This compound lacks a long range order down to 37 mK, which is a temperature 5000-times lower than the magnetic interaction scale of around 200 K. Partial substitution for Zn can continuously vary the magnetic ground state from an antiferromagnetic order to a spin-gapped state through the liquid state. This indicates that the spin-liquid state emerges from a delicate balance of inter- and intra-dimer interactions, and the spin state of the dimer plays a vital role. This unique feature should realize a new type of quantum magnetism.

Charge ordering (CO) is a phenomenon in which electrons in solids crystallize into a periodic pattern of charge-rich and charge-poor sites owing to strong electron correlations. This usually results in long-range order. In geometrically frustrated systems, however, a glassy electronic state without long-range CO has been observed. We found that a charge-ordered organic material with an isosceles triangular lattice shows charge dynamics associated with crystallization and vitrification of electrons, which can be understood in the context of an energy landscape arising from the degeneracy of various CO patterns. The dynamics suggest that the same nucleation and growth processes that characterize conventional glass-forming liquids guide the crystallization of electrons. These similarities may provide insight into our understanding of the liquid-glass transition.

We investigated the effects of $c/a$ anisotropy and local crystal structure on superconductivity (SC) in As/P solid solution systems, $A\mathrm{Fe_{2}}(\mathrm{As}_{1-x}\mathrm{P}_{x}\mathrm{)_{2}}$ ($A$122P) with various $A$ ions. With decreasing $A$ site atomic size from $A$=Ba to Eu, the structural anisotropy decreases, and the rate of decreasing with $x$ also increases. The rapid narrowing of the region of antiferromagnetic composition ($x$) can be considered to be a result of this anisotropy change due mainly to the change in the Fermi surface (FS) nesting condition. By contrast, although the structural anisotropy systematically changes, the maximum $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ values are almost the same in all $A$122P systems except for Eu122P. These results indicate that the modification of the FS topology via the structural anisotropy does not affect SC. However local structural parameters, such as pnictogen height, are crucial for $T_{\mathrm{c}}$.

We propose a possible electronic model and transition mechanism, starting from a localized electron picture on the basis of the Rietveld refinement. Within this model, BaIrO3 can be basically regarded as a Mott insulator, when the Ir3O12 trimer is identified to one pseudo-atom or one lattice site. The transition can be viewed as a transition from the Mott insulator phase to a kind of charge ordered insulator phase.

We report on the electronic ground state of a layered perovskite vanadium oxide Sr$_2$VO$_4$ studied by the combined use of synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) techniques, where $μ$SR measurements were extended down to 30 mK. We found an intermediate orthorhombic phase between $T_{\rm c2} \sim$~130 K and $T_{\rm c1} \sim$~100 K, whereas a tetragonal phase appears for $T > T_{\rm c2}$ and $T < T_{\rm c1}$. The absence of long-range magnetic order was confirmed by $μ$SR at the reentrant tetragonal phase below $T_{\rm c1}$, where the relative enhancement in the $c$-axis length versus that of the $a$-axis length was observed. However, no clear indication of the lowering of the tetragonal lattice symmetry with superlattice modulation, which is expected in the orbital order state with superstructure of $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals, was observed by SR-XRD below $T_{\rm c1}$. Instead, it was inferred from $μ$SR that a magnetic state developed below $T_{\rm c0} \sim$~10 K, which was characterized by the highly inhomogeneous and fluctuating local magnetic fields down to 30 mK. We argue that the anomalous magnetic ground state below $T_{\rm c0}$ originates from the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations.

The energy gap evaluated from the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient systematically changes with the Ga concentration, and suggests that the system changes from a small polaron insulator to a band insulator. We find that all the samples show Curie-Weiss-like susceptibility with a small Weiss temperature of the order of 1 K, which is seriously incompatible with the collective wisdom that a trivalent rhodium ion is nonmagnetic. We have determined the $g$ factor to be $g$=2.3 from the electron spin resonance, and the spin number to be $S$=1 from the magnetization-field curves by fitting with a modified Brillouin function. The fraction of the $S$=1 spins is 2--5%, which depends on the degree of disorder in the La/Sr/Ca-site, which implies that disorder near the apical oxygen is related to the magnetism of this system. A possible origin for the magnetic Rh$^{3+}$ ions is discussed.

The critical cooling rate $R_{\rm c}$ above which charge ordering is kinetically avoided upon cooling, which results in charge-glass formation, was investigated for the geometrically frustrated system $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$. X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$TlCo(SCN)$_4$ exhibits a horizontally charge-ordered state, and kinetic avoidance of this state requires rapid cooling of faster than 150 K/min. This value is markedly higher than that reported for two other isostructural $θ$-type compounds, thus demonstrating the lower charge-glass-forming ability of $X$ $=$ TlCo(SCN)$_4$. In accounting for the systematic variations of $R_{\rm c}$ among the three $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$, we found that stronger charge frustration leads to superior charge-glass former. Our results suggest that charge frustration tends to slow the kinetics of charge ordering.

The crystal structures and their properties were characterized by powder neutron diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The hydrogen anions selectively replaced equatorial oxygen sites in the VO6 layers via statistical substitution of hydrogen in the low x region (x < 0.2). A new orthorhombic phase (Immm) with an almost entirely hydrogen-ordered structure formed from the K2NiF4-type tetragonal phase with x > 0.7. Based on the DFT calculations, the degree of oxygen/hydrogen anion ordering is strongly correlated with the bonding interaction between vanadium and the ligands.

High-temperature (high-$T_{\rm c}$) superconductivity appears as a consequence of the carrier-do** of an undoped parent compound exhibiting antiferromagnetic order; thereby, ground-state properties of the parent compound are closely relevant to the superconducting state. On the basis of the concept, a spin-fluctuation has been addressed as an origin of pairing of the superconducting electrons in cuprates. Whereas, there is growing interest in the pairing mechanism such as an unconventional spin-fluctuation or an advanced orbital-fluctuation due to the characteristic multi-orbital system in iron-pnictides. Here, we report the discovery of an antiferromagnetic order as well as a unique structural transition in electron-overdoped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ ($x$ ~ 0.5), whereby another parent phase was uncovered, albeit heavily doped. The unprecedented two-dome superconducting phases observed in this material can be interpreted as a consequence of the carrier-do** starting from the original at $x\sim0$ and advanced at $x\sim0.5$ parent phases toward the intermediate region. The bipartite parent phases with distinct physical properties in the second magnetic phase provide us with an interesting example to illustrate the intimate interplay among the magnetic interaction, structural change and orbital degree of freedom in iron-pnictides.

Using a combination of polarization hysteresis measurements and piezoresponse force microscopy on a uniaxial organic ferroelectric, alpha-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridinium chloranilate, we found that the head-to-head (or tail-to-tail) charged domain walls are strongly pinned and thus impede the switching process; in contrast, if the charged domain walls are replaced with electrically neutral antiparallel domain walls, bulk polarization switching is achieved. Our findings suggest that manipulation of the multidomain topology can potentially control the switchable polarization.

Geometrically frustrated spin systems often do not exhibit long-range ordering, resulting in either quantum-mechanically disordered states, such as quantum spin liquids, or classically disordered states, such as spin ices or spin glasses. Geometric frustration may play a similar role in charge ordering, potentially leading to unconventional electronic states without long-range order; however, there are no previous experimental demonstrations of this phenomenon. Here, we show that a charge-cluster glass evolves upon cooling in the absence of long-range charge ordering for an organic conductor with a triangular lattice, theta-(BEDT-TTF)2RbZn(SCN)4. A combination of time-resolved transport measurements and x-ray diffraction reveal that the charge-liquid phase has charge clusters that fluctuate extremely slowly (<10-100 Hz) and heterogeneously. Upon further cooling, the cluster dynamics freeze, and a charge-cluster glass is formed. Surprisingly, these observations correspond to recent ideas regarding the structural glass formation of supercooled liquids, indicating that a glass-forming charge liquid relates correlated-electron physics to glass physics in soft matter.

We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O$_{6}$ octahedron of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh$^{3+}$ substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO$_{3}$ from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin-state and low-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions, and suggest that the high-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh$^{3+}$ ions.

The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) increased from 26 K to 33 K by annealing. The X-ray diffraction measurement suggested that the annealed crystals have the shorter/longer $a/c$-axes and the larger pnictogen height $h_\mathrm{Pn}$. This must be linked to the $T_c$-enhancement by annealing. Moreover, it was found that the post-annealing decreased the electronic specific heat coefficient at $T$=0 K, $γ_r$, and changed the magnetic field ($H$) dependence from sub-linear $γ_r\propto H^{0.7}$ to $H$-linear $γ_r\propto H$. This can be attributed the electronic change from dirty to clean superconductors with $s_{\pm}$ gap.

We report on atomic ordering of B-site transition-metals and magnetic properties of epitaxial La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite films grown by pulsed-laser deposition under various conditions. The highest ordered sample exhibited a fraction of antisite-disorder of only 0.05 and a saturation magnetization of ~2μ_{B} per formula unit at 5 K. The result is consistent with the antiferromagnetic ordering of local spin moment (3d^{3}_{\downarrow}3d^{5}_{\uparrow}; S = -3/2+5/2 = 1). Therefore, the magnetic ground state of La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite that has been long debate is unambiguously revealed to be ferrimagnetic. Our results present a wide opportunity to explore novel magnetic properties of binary transition-metal perovskites upon epitaxial stabilization of the ordered phase.

This finding strongly indicates that the momentum-dependent pseudogap feature in the layered nickelate arises from the real-space charge correlation.

CO-OO transition is observed around 220 K for a film grown on an LSAT (011) substrate ((011)-film), similarly to a bulk sample, while a film grown on a (001) plane of LSAT ((001)-film) shows much higher transition temperature around 300 K. The domain size of OO is approximately 3 times as large in the (011)-film as in the (001)-film. These results demonstrate that various properties of CO-OO phenomena can be controlled with the growth orientation via the epitaxial strain from the substrate.

In a single-layer Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ system, the ($y^2-z^2$)/($z^2-x^2$)-type orbital shape is observed, while the ($3y^2-r^2$)/($3x^2-r^2$)-type orbital shape in a pseudo cubic Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ system. In a double-layer Pr(Sr$_{0.1}$Ca$_{0.9}$)$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$ system, the orbital shape is found to undergo a large change upon thermally induced rotation of orbital stripe. Furthermore, clear charge disproportionation is observed for the pseudo cubic and double-layer systems, while not in the single-layer system. These results indicate that the orbital shape and charge disproportionation are sensitive to the dimension of Mn-O network.

Impurity effects on the stability of a ferromagnetic metallic state in a bicritical-state manganite, (La0.7Pr0.3)0.65Ca0.35MnO3, on the verge of metal-insulator transition have been investigated by substituting a variety of transition-metal atoms for Mn ones. Among them, Fe do** exhibits the exceptional ability to dramatically decrease the ferromagnetic transition temperature. Systematic studies on the magnetotransport properties and x-ray diffraction for the Fe-doped crystals have revealed that charge-orbital ordering evolves down to low temperatures, which strongly suppresses the ferromagnetic metallic state. The observed glassy magnetic and transport properties as well as diffuse phase transition can be attributed to the phase-separated state where short-range charge-orbital-ordered clusters are embedded in the ferromagnetic metallic matrix. Such a behavior in the Fe-doped manganites form a marked contrast to the Cr-do** effects on charge-orbital-ordered manganites known as impurity-induced collapse of charge-orbital ordering.

Here we establish the intrinsic bandwidth-disorder phase diagram of half-doped layered manganites with the two-dimensional (2$D$) Mn-O network, examining in detail the ``mother state'' of the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) phenomenon in crystals without ferromagnetic instability. The consequences of the reduced dimensionality, from 3$D$ to 2$D$, on the order-disorder phenomena in the charge-orbital sectors are also highlighted.

Optical conductivity measurements show the opening of a gap as large as 0.1 eV, indicating that the metal-to-insulator transition is driven by the electron correlation. The complex low-temperature antiferromagnetic spin arrangement, reminiscent of those observed in some nickelates and manganites, suggests a long range orbital order.
