We present a thorough investigation of the physical properties and superconductivity of the binary intermetallic V2Ga5. Electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements show that V2Ga5 enters its superconducting state below Tsc = 3.5 K, with a critical field of Hc2,perp c(Hc2,para c) = 6.5(4.1) kOe. With H perp c, the peak effect was observed in resistivity measurements, indicating the ultrahigh quality of the single crystal studied. The resistivity measurements under high pressure reveal that the Tsc is suppressed linearly with pressure and reaches absolute zero around 20 GPa. Specific heat and muon spin relaxation measurements both indicate that the two-gap s-wave model best describes the superconductivity of V2Ga5. The spectra obtained from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements suggest that two superconducting gaps open at the Fermi surface around the Z and Γ points. These results are verified by first-principles band structure calculations. We therefore conclude that V2Ga5 is a phonon-mediated two-gap s-wave superconductor

The electronic and magnetic states of $β$-MnO$_{2}$ in terms of hydrogen impurities have been investigated by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) technique combined with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations for muon as pseudo-hydrogen. We found that 85% of implanted muons are localized in the oxygen channels of the rutile structure and behave as interstitial protons (Mu$^{+})$ except those (7.6%) forming a charge-neutral state (Mu$^{0})$ at 2.3 K, which indicates that interstitial hydrogen acts as a shallow donor within less than 0.1 meV of ionization energy. The residual 15% of muons are attributed to those related to lattice imperfection as Mn vacancies. Detailed analyses combined with DFT approach suggested that the muon is localized at the center of the oxygen channel due to its large zero-point vibration energy.

CaSb$_2$ is a bulk superconductor and a topological semimetal, making it a great platform for realizing topological superconductivity. In this work, we investigate the superconducting upper and lower critical field anisotropy using magnetic susceptibility, and study the superconducting state using muon spin-relaxation. The temperature dependence of transverse-field relaxation rate can be fitted with a single-gap model or two-gap model. Zero-field relaxation shows little temperature dependence when the muon-spin is parallel to the $c*$-axis, while an increase in relaxation appears below 1 K when the muon-spin is parallel to the $ab$-plane. We conclude an $s+is$ order parameter considering the breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS), which originates from competing interband interactions between the three bands of CaSb$_2$. To explain the direction-dependent breaking of TRS we suggest loop currents develo** in the plane of distorted square-net of Sb atoms.

Iron-chalcogenide superconductors FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ possess unique electronic properties such as non-magnetic nematic order and its quantum critical point. The nature of superconductivity with such nematicity is important for understanding the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity. A recent theory suggested the possible emergence of a fundamentally new class of superconductivity with the so-called Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces (BFSs) in this system. However, such an {\em ultranodal} pair state requires broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in the superconducting state, which has not been observed experimentally. Here we report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ superconductors for $0\le x \le 0.22$ covering both orthorhombic (nematic) and tetragonal phases. We find that the zero-field muon relaxation rate is enhanced below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ for all compositions, indicating that the superconducting state breaks TRS both in the nematic and tetragonal phases. Moreover, the transverse-field $μ$SR measurements reveal that the superfluid density shows an unexpected and substantial reduction in the tetragonal phase ($x>0.17$). This implies that a significant fraction of electrons remain unpaired in the zero-temperature limit, which cannot be explained by the known unconventional superconducting states with point or line nodes. The time-reversal symmetry breaking and the suppressed superfluid density in the tetragonal phase, together with the reported enhanced zero-energy excitations, are consistent with the ultranodal pair state with BFSs. The present results reveal two different superconducting states with broken TRS separated by the nematic critical point in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$, which calls for the theory of microscopic origins that account for the relation between the nematicity and superconductivity.

This work reports comprehensive XRD, magnetization, specific heat and muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements ($μ$SR) on a valence-skipped compound: AgSnSe$_2$. The temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat ($C_{el}(T)$) and of the upper critical field ($H_{c2}(T)$) provide evidence of two-gap superconductivity, which is also confirmed by our transverse-field $μ$SR measurements. Our zero-field $μ$SR measurements suggest preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting ground state of AgSnSe$_2$.

We have studied the superconducting properties of the isostructural ternary noncentrosymmetric superconductors TaXSi (X = Re, Ru) with the help of muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) and density functional theory calculations. Our transverse-field $μ$SR measurements indicate isotropic s-wave superconductivity in TaReSi and multi-gap superconductivity in TaRuSi. Zero-field $μ$SR measurements, highly sensitive to very small magnetic fields, and no evidence for spontaneous fields in the superconducting state of TaReSi, whereas we observe small spontaneous fields that onset with superconductivity indicating broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) superconductivity in TaRuSi. Using density functional theory calculations, we find that spin-orbit coupling is relatively weak in TaRuSi and strong in TaReSi. Using symmetry analysis, we attribute the broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in TaRuSi to a non-unitary triplet pairing state. Such a state is not allowed in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling: our finding of no evidence for broken TRS in TaReSi is consistent with this expectation.

We report on the stability and magnetic state of ion implanted $^8$Li in single crystals of the semiconductor ZnO using $β$-detected nuclear magnetic resonance. At ultradilute concentrations, the spectra reveal distinct Li sites from 7.6 to 400 K. Ionized shallow donor interstitial Li is stable across the entire temperature range, confirming its ability to self-compensate the acceptor character of its (Zn) substitutional counterpart. Above 300 K, spin-lattice relaxation indicates the onset of correlated local motion of interacting defects, and the spectra show a site change transition from disordered configurations to substitutional. Like the interstitial, the substitutional shows no resolved hyperfine splitting, indicating it is also fully ionized above 210 K. The electric field gradient at the interstitial $^8$Li exhibits substantial temperature dependence with a power law typical of non-cubic metals.

Dimensionality is a critical factor in determining the properties of solids and is an apparent built-in character of the crystal structure. However, it can be an emergent and tunable property in geometrically frustrated spin systems. Here, we study the spin dynamics of the tetrahedral cluster antiferromagnet, pharmacosiderite, via muon spin resonance and neutron scattering. We find that the spin correlation exhibits a two-dimensional characteristic despite the isotropic connectivity of tetrahedral clusters made of spin 5/2 Fe3+ ions in the three-dimensional cubic crystal, which we ascribe to two-dimensionalisation by geometrical frustration based on spin wave calculations. Moreover, we suggest that even one-dimensionalisation occurs in the decoupled layers, generating low-energy and one-dimensional excitation modes, causing large spin fluctuation in the classical spin system. Pharmacosiderite facilitates studying the emergence of low-dimensionality and manipulating anisotropic responses arising from the dimensionality using an external magnetic field.

Intermetallic silicide compounds, LaScSi and Y$_5$Si$_3$, known for being hydrogen (H) storage materials, are drawing attention as candidates for electrides in which anions are substituted by unbound electrons. It is inferred from a muon spin rotation experiment that the local field at the muon site (which is the same site as that for H) in these compounds exhibits a large negative shift under an external magnetic field, which is mostly independent of temperature. Such anomalous diamagnetism signals a unique property of electride electrons associated with transition metals. Moreover, the diamagnetic shift decreases with increasing H content, suggesting that the electride electrons existing coherently in the hollow interstitial positions are adsorbed by H to form hydride ions (H$^-$)

Samples were examined using a superconducting (Nb) neutron imaging system employing a delay-line technique which in previous studies was shown to have high spatial resolution. We found excellent correspondence between neutron transmission and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of Gd islands with sizes between 15 and 130 micrometer which were thermally-sprayed onto a Si substrate. Neutron transmission images could be used to identify tiny voids in a thermally-sprayed continuous Gd2O3 film on a Si substrate which could not be seen in SEM images. We also found that neutron transmission images revealed pattern formations, mosaic features and co-existing dendritic phases in Wood's metal samples with constituent elements Bi, Pb, Sn and Cd. These results demonstrate the merits of the current-biased kinetic inductance detector (CB-KID) system for practical studies in materials science. Moreover, we found that operating the detector at a more optimal temperature (7.9 K) appreciably improved the effective detection efficiency when compared to previous studies conducted at 4 K. This is because the effective size of hot-spots in the superconducting meanderline planes increases with temperature, which makes particle detections more likely.

We explore the magnetically-ordered ground state of the isovalently-substituted Mott-insulator Y$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$ for $x$ $\leq$ 0.3 via single crystal growth, magnetometry, neutron diffraction, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). We find that the decrease in the magnetic transition temperature on approaching the ferromagnetic (FM) - antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase boundary at the La concentration $x_c$ $\approx$ 0.3 is accompanied by a strong suppression of both bulk and local ordered magnetic moments, along with a volume-wise separation into magnetically-ordered and paramagnetic regions. The thermal phase transition does not show conventional second-order behavior, since neither a clear signature of dynamic critical behavior nor a power-law divergence of the magnetic correlation length is found for the studied substitution range; this finding becomes increasingly obvious with substitution. Finally, from SANS and magnetometry measurements, we discern a crossover from easy-axis to easy-plane magneto-crystalline anisotropy with increasing La substitution. These results indicate complex changes in magnetic structure upon approaching the phase boundary.

In the superconducting state, an anti-crossing gap opens between the outer- and inner-BQP bands, which we attribute primarily to interlayer single-particle hop** with possible contributions from interlayer Cooper pairing. We find that the $d$-wave superconducting gap of both BQP bands smoothly develops with momentum without abrupt jump in contrast to a previous ARPES study. Hybridization between the BQPs also gradually increases in going from the off-nodal to the anti-nodal region, which is explained by the momentum-dependence of the interlayer single-particle hop**. As possible mechanisms for the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature, the hybridization between the BQPs, as well as the combination of phonon modes of the triple CuO$_2$ layers and spin fluctuations are discussed.

Muon spin rotation and resonant soft X-ray scattering experiments on prototype multiferroics RMn2O5 (R = Y, Sm) are used to demonstrate that the local electric displacements are driven by the spin-current (SC) mechanism. Small local electric displacements were evaluated by observing spin polarization at ligand O ions, for which implanted muons served as an extremely sensitive probe. Our results for YMn2O5 provide evidence that the spin polarization of O ions forming a spin cycloid chain with Mn spins increases in proportion to the vector spin chirality (Si x Sj ) of the Mn ions. This relationship strongly indicates that the charge transfer between O and Mn ions is driven by the SC mechanism, which leads to the ferroelectricity accompanying O spin polarization.

The magnetism of the second antiferromagnetic phase (AF2) arising in the iron-based LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_{x}$ superconductor for $x\gtrsim0.4$ was investigated by muon spin rotation measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to 2.6 GPa. The Néel temperature ($T_{\rm N}$) obtained for a sample with $x=0.51$ exhibits considerably greater sensitivity to pressure than that in the pristine antiferromagnetic phase (AF1, $x\lesssim0.06$). Moreover, while the AF1 phase is always accompanied by the structural transition (from tetragonal to orthorhombic) at a temperature ($T_{\rm s}$) which is slightly higher than $T_{\rm N}$, the AF2 phase prevails at higher pressures above $\sim$1.5 GPa where the structural transition is suppressed ($T_{\rm s}=0$). These features indicate that the microscopic origin of the AF2 phase is distinct from that of AF1, suggesting that electronic correlation plays important role in the former phase. We argue that the orbital-selective Mott transition is a plausible scenario to account for the observed pressure dependence of $T_{\rm N}$ and $T_{\rm s}$ in the AF2 phase.

We report on a novel spin-charge fluctuation in the all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$, where the spin fluctuation is driven by the conduction of thermally excited electrons/holes and associated fluctuation of Os valence. The fluctuation exhibits an activation energy significantly greater than the spin-charge excitation gap and a peculiar frequency range of $10^{6}$--$10^{10}$ s$^{-1}$. These features are attributed to the hop** motion of carriers as small polarons in the insulating phase, where the polaron state is presumably induced by the magnetoelastic coupling via the strong spin-orbit interaction. Such a coupled spin-charge-phonon fluctuation manifests as a part of the metal-insulator transition that is extended over a wide temperature range due to the modest electron correlation comparable with other interactions characteristic for 5$d$-subshell systems.

We report on the local electronic structure of interstitial muon (Mu) as pseudo-hydrogen in In-Ga-Zn oxide (IGZO) semiconductor studied by muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) experiment. In polycrystalline (c-) IGZO, it is inferred that Mu is in a diamagnetic state, where the $μ$SR time spectra under zero external field is perfectly described by the Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe relaxation function with the linewidth $Δ$ serving as a sensitive measure for the random local fields from In/Ga nuclear magnetic moments. The magnitude of $Δ$ combined with the density functional theory calculations for H (to mimic Mu) suggests that Mu occupies Zn-O bond-center site (Mu$_{\rm BC}$) similar to the case in crystalline ZnO. This implies that the diamagnetic state in c-IGZO corresponds to Mu$_{\rm BC}^+$, thus serving as an electron donor. In amorphous (a-) IGZO, the local Mu structure in as-deposited films is nearly identical with that in c-IGZO, suggesting Mu$_{\rm BC}^+$ for the electronic state. In contrast, the diamagnetic signal in heavily hydrogenated a-IGZO films exhibits the Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe relaxation, implying that Mu accompanies more inhomogeneous distribution of the neighboring nuclear spins that may involve Mu$^-$H$^-$-complex state in an oxygen vacancy.

Inelastic neutron scattering was performed for an iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO0.9D0.1, where most of D (deuterium) replaces oxygen, while a tiny amount goes into interstitial sites. By first-principle calculation, we characterize the interstitial sites for D (and for H slightly mixed) with four equivalent potential minima. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 26 K,new excitations emerge in the range 5-15 meV, while they are absent in the reference system LaFeAsO0.9F0.1. The strong excitations at 14.5 meV and 11.1 meV broaden rapidly around 15 K and 20 K, respectively, where each energy becomes comparable to twice of the superconducting gap. The strong excitations are ascribed to a quantum rattling, or a band motion of hydrogen, which arises only if the number of potential minima is larger than two.

LiV$_2$O$_4$ spinel is known to exhibit heavy fermion-like behavior below a characteristic temperature $T_K\simeq 20$ K, while it preserves a paramagnetic state down to $T\sim10^{-2}$ K due to geometrical frustration. Here, it is shown that the dynamical spin susceptibility $χ({\bf q},ω)$ in LiV$_2$O$_4$ exhibits anomalous duality which is modeled as a sum of itinerant ($χ_{\rm F}$) and local ($χ_{\rm L}$) components, and that the local spin dynamics inferred from $χ_{\rm L}({\bf q},ω)$ is qualitatively different from that expected from time-averaged bulk properties. The anomaly coexists with the marginal Fermi liquid behavior inferred from the $-\ln T$ dependence of the electronic specific heat over a wide temperature range below $T_K$. We argue that such unusual properties of LiV$_2$O$_4$ can be attributed to the putative metallic spin liquid state emerging near the quantum critical point between spin glass and Fermi liquid states.

The electronic structure of interstitial hydrogen in a compound semiconductor FeS$_2$ (naturally $n$-type) is inferred from a muon study. An implanted muon (Mu, a pseudo-hydrogen) forms electronically different defect centers discerned by the hyperfine parameter ($ω_{\rm hf}$). A body of evidence indicates that one muon is situated at the center of an iron-cornered tetrahedron with nearly isotropic $ω_{\rm hf}$ (Mu$_{\rm p}$), and that the other exists as a diamagnetic state (Mu$_{\rm d}$, $ω_{\rm hf}\simeq 0$). Their response to thermal agitation indicates that the Mu$_{\rm d}$ center accompanies a shallow level (donor or acceptor) understood by effective mass model while the electronic structure of Mu$_{\rm p}$ center is more isolated from host than Mu$_{\rm d}$ to form a deeper donor level. These observations suggest that interstitial hydrogen also serves as an electronically active impurity in FeS$_2$. Based on earlier reports on the hydrogen diffusion in FeS$_2$, possibility of fast diffusion for Mu$_{\rm p}$ leading to formation of a complex defect state (Mu$^*_{\rm d}$, $T\le 100$ K) or to motional narrowing state (Mu$^*_{\rm p}$, $T\ge 150$ K) is also discussed.

Magnetic properties of the electride compound Y$_2$C were investigated by muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility on two samples with different form (poly- and single-crystalline), to examine the theoretically-predicted Stoner ferromagnetism for the electride bands. There was no evidence of static magnetic order in both samples even at temperatures down to 0.024 K. For the poly-crystalline sample, the presence of a paramagnetic moment at Y sites was inferred from the Curie-Weiss behavior of the muon Knight shift and susceptibility, whereas no such tendency was observed in the single-crystalline sample. These observations suggest that the electronic ground state of Y$_2$C is at the limit between weak-to-strong electronic correlation, where onsite Coulomb repulsion is sensitive to a local modulation of the electronic state or a shift in the Fermi level due to the presence of defects/impurities.

We report a muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) study of single-crystalline samples of the $α$-RuCl$_3$ honeycomb magnet, which is presumed to be a model compound for the Kitaev-Heisenberg interaction. It is inferred from magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat measurements that the present samples exhibit successive magnetic transitions at different critical temperatures $T_{\rm N}$ with decreasing temperature, eventually falling into the $T_{\rm N}=7$ K antiferromagnetic (7 K) phase that has been observed in only single-crystalline specimens with the least stacking fault. Via $μ$SR measurements conducted under a zero external field, we show that such behavior originates from a phase separation induced by the honeycomb plane stacking fault, yielding multiple domains with different $T_{\rm N}$'s. We also perform $μ$SR measurements under a transverse field in the paramagnetic phase to identify the muon site from the muon-Ru hyperfine parameters. Based on a comparison of the experimental and calculated internal fields at the muon site for the two possible spin structures inferred from neutron diffraction data, we suggest a modulated zig-zag spin structure for the 7 K phase, with the amplitude of the ordered magnetic moment being significantly reduced from that expected for the orbital quenched spin-1/2 state.

Superconductivity also appears for $p>p_{\rm MI}$, suggesting that this feature is controlled by the MI transition. More interestingly, the magnitude of the DOS reduction induced by the pseudogap remains unchanged over a wide do** range ($0.1\le p\le0.2$), indicating that the pseudogap remains as a hallmark of the MI transition for $p>p_{\rm MI}$.

However, an isolated negatively charged state (Mu$^-$, an analog of H$^-$) becomes dominant when the compound approaches the state of electride [Ca$_{12}$Al$_{14}$O$_{32}]^{2+}$[$\square_4$2e$^{-}$] as a result of the reduction process. Moreover, the OMu$^-$ state in the pristine specimen exhibits depolarization of paramagnetic origin at low temperatures (below $\sim$30~K), indicating that OMu$^-$ accompanies a loosely bound electron in the cage that can be thermally activated. This suggests that interstitial muons (and hence H) forming a "cage electron-hydroxyl" complex can serve as electron donors in C12A7.

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the nodal quasi-particle spectra of the high-Tc cuprate tri-layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d (Tc~ 110 K). The spectral weight Z of the nodal quasi-particle increases with decreasing temperature across the Tc. Such a temperature dependence is qualitatively similar to that of the coherence peak intensity in the anti nodal region of various high-Tc cuprates although the nodal spectral weight remains finite and large above Tc. We attribute this observation to the reduction of electron correlation strength in going from the normal metallic state to the superconducting state, a characteristic behavior of a superconductor with strong electron correlation.

We found an intermediate orthorhombic phase between $T_{\rm c2} \sim$~130 K and $T_{\rm c1} \sim$~100 K, whereas a tetragonal phase appears for $T > T_{\rm c2}$ and $T < T_{\rm c1}$. The absence of long-range magnetic order was confirmed by $μ$SR at the reentrant tetragonal phase below $T_{\rm c1}$, where the relative enhancement in the $c$-axis length versus that of the $a$-axis length was observed. However, no clear indication of the lowering of the tetragonal lattice symmetry with superlattice modulation, which is expected in the orbital order state with superstructure of $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals, was observed by SR-XRD below $T_{\rm c1}$. Instead, it was inferred from $μ$SR that a magnetic state developed below $T_{\rm c0} \sim$~10 K, which was characterized by the highly inhomogeneous and fluctuating local magnetic fields down to 30 mK. We argue that the anomalous magnetic ground state below $T_{\rm c0}$ originates from the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations.

In contrast, no long-range magnetic order was observed in orthorhombic SrIrO$_3$ ($n=\infty$). Based on the known magnetic structure in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, we successfully identified muon sites in these compounds from the magnitude of $B_{\rm loc}$ in the first stage ($T_{\rm m}\le T\le T_{\rm N}$). Below $T_{\rm m}$, $B_{\rm loc}$ probed by a fraction of muons occupying sites near the apical oxygen of IrO$_6$ octahedra exhibited a further increase but remained mostly unchanged for sites close to the in-plane oxygen. While such behavior cannot be explained by the alteration of the Ir spin structure, it is consistent with the selective appearance of ordered magnetic moments on the apical oxygen. The oxygen polarization was also in line with the reported magnetization anomalies in these compounds below $\sim T_{\rm m}$. A possible link between the oxygen polarization and ferroelectric (multiferroic) behavior in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ was considered.

High-temperature (high-$T_{\rm c}$) superconductivity appears as a consequence of the carrier-do** of an undoped parent compound exhibiting antiferromagnetic order; thereby, ground-state properties of the parent compound are closely relevant to the superconducting state. On the basis of the concept, a spin-fluctuation has been addressed as an origin of pairing of the superconducting electrons in cuprates. Whereas, there is growing interest in the pairing mechanism such as an unconventional spin-fluctuation or an advanced orbital-fluctuation due to the characteristic multi-orbital system in iron-pnictides. Here, we report the discovery of an antiferromagnetic order as well as a unique structural transition in electron-overdoped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ ($x$ ~ 0.5), whereby another parent phase was uncovered, albeit heavily doped. The unprecedented two-dome superconducting phases observed in this material can be interpreted as a consequence of the carrier-do** starting from the original at $x\sim0$ and advanced at $x\sim0.5$ parent phases toward the intermediate region. The bipartite parent phases with distinct physical properties in the second magnetic phase provide us with an interesting example to illustrate the intimate interplay among the magnetic interaction, structural change and orbital degree of freedom in iron-pnictides.

The kink energy of the OP band is $\sim$ 70 meV, as observed in various high-$T_c$ cuprates, while that of the IP band is as large as 100 meV in the superconducting (SC) state. This large kink energy is attributed to the $\sim$ 35 meV buckling mode plus the large ($\sim$ 60 meV) SC gap of IP. The IP band also shows a weak kink feature at 70 meV in the SC state. The latter feature can be explained either by the 70 meV half-breathing mode or by the $\sim$ 35 meV buckling-phonon mode plus the $\sim$ 40 meV SC gap of OP if interlayer scattering of QP is involved.

Characteristic normal-state charge transport is found in the oxygen-deficient iron-arsenides LnFeAsO1-y (Ln: La and Nd) with the highest Tc's among known Fe-based superconductors. The effect of "do**" in this system is mainly on the carrier scattering, quite distinct from that in high-Tc cuprates. In the superconducting regime of the La system with maximum Tc = 28 K, the low-temperature resistivity is dominated by a T^2 term. On the other hand, in the Nd system with Tc higher than 40 K, the carriers are subject to stronger scattering showing T-linear resistivity and small magnetoresistance. We investigated the optical spectrum of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals with various do** levels. It is found that the low-energy optical conductivity spectrum of this system can be decomposed into two components: a sharp Drude term and a broad "incoherent" term. For the compounds showing magnetic order, a gap appears predominantly in the "incoherent" component, while an s-wave like superconducting gap opens in both components for highly doped compounds. The Drude weight steadily increases as do** proceeds, consistent with electron do** in this system. On the other hand, the "incoherent" spectral weight is almost do** independent, but its spectral feature is intimately connected with the magnetism. We demonstrate that the presence of two distinct components in the optical spectrum well explains the do** and temperature dependences of the dc resistivity.

We have performed an angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of lightly-doped to underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) untwinned single crystals and a core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) study of YBCO single and polycrystals. In the zone diagonal (nodal) direction, dispersive quasi-particle (QP) features crossing the Fermi level were observed down to the hole concentration of ~ 4%, which explains the metallic transport of the lightly-doped YBCO. The chemical potential shift estimated from XPS was more rapid than in the Bi2212 cuprates. Upon hole do**, very rapid spectral weight transfer from high binding energies to the QP feature, even faster than La2-xSrxCuO4, was observed.

The internal magnetic field distribution in a mixed state of a cuprate superconductor, Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_x$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ ($T_{\rm c}\simeq28.5$ K, near the optimal do**), was measured by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) technique up to 60 kOe. The $μ$SR linewidth $Λ(B)$ which exhibits excess broadening at higher fields ($B>5$ kOe) due to field-induced magnetism (FIM), is described by a relation, $Λ(B)\propto\sqrt{B}$. This suggests that the orbital current and associated quasiparticle excitation plays predominant roles in stabilizing the quasistatic correlation. Moreover, a slowing down of the vortex fluctuation sets in well above $T_{\rm c}$, as inferred from the trace of FIM observed up to $\sim80$ K, and develops continuously without a singularity at $T_{\rm c}$ as the temperature decreases.

We propose that the enhancement of the $Δ_0$ of IP is due to the minimal influence of out-of-plane disorder and that the OP gap is then enhanced through interlayer coupling, most likely a proximity effect from the IP.

We investigate the effect of disorder at various lattice sites outside the CuO$_2$ plane on the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ of the cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). The most effective disorder turns out to be that at the Sr site in the neighboring blocks, which contain apical-oxygen atoms. The Sr-site disorder reduces $T_c$ and also produces a residual component ($ρ_0$) in the in-plane resistivity, the magnitude of which is found to be proportional to the magnitude of $T_c$ reduction. We demonstrate that both $T_c$-degradation rate and $ρ_0$ decrease as the number of the CuO$_2$ planes increases in the unit cell, that is, as the number of the neighboring SrO blocks decreases. In real crystals of Bi-based cuprates, main source of disorder is Bi atoms randomly occupying the Sr sites. We have succeeded in reducing the Bi content at Sr-sites as much as possible and achieved $T_c$=98K, a high-$T_c$ record in Bi2212.

Disorder is controlled by changing rare earth (Ln) ions with different ionic radius in the former, and by varying the Nd content in the latter with the doped carrier density kept constant. We show that this type of disorder works as weak scatterers in contrast to the in-plane disorder produced by Zn, but remarkably reduces $T_{c}$ suggesting novel effects of disorder on high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity.

The obtained phase diagram qualitatively agrees well with that commonly found for hole-doped high-\tc cuprates, strongly suggesting that the incomplete suppression of the AF order for $x>0.02$ is an essential feature of the hole-doped cuprates.

In the paramagnetic state, the muon Knight shift along the crystal c-axis ($K_μ^z$) is proportional to the in-plane susceptibility $χ_{ab}$. More surprisingly, $K_μ^z$ is strongly enhanced by the occurrence of superconductivity (below $\sim$40 kOe), changing its sign from positive to negative around $\sim1$ kOe with increasing field. This finding can be understood by considering the weak polarization of Pr ions due to superexchange interaction with the antiferromagnetic Cu sublattice, which coexists with superconductivity.

The Neel temperature, which is Tn=5.4K for the undoped system, becomes significantly reduced for less than one percent of do** Pd, giving a support for the previous proposal for the good one-dimensionality. The Pd concentration dependence of the Neel temperature is compared with a recent theoretical study (S. Eggert, I. Affleck and M.D.P. Horton, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 47202 (2002)) of weakly coupled one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains of S=1/2 spins, and a quantitative agreement is found. The inhomogeneity of the ordered moment sizes is characterized by the muSR time spectra. We propose a model that the ordered moment size recovers away from the dopant S=0 sites with a recovery length of ξ= 150-200 sites. The origin of the finite recovery length ξfor the gapless S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chain is compared to the estimate based on the effective staggered magnetic field from the neighboring chains.

Selection of well-characterized crystals enabled us to measure purely in-plane polarized spectra without any additional peak. The weight of superconducting (SC) condensate estimated from the missing area in $σ_1(ω$) well agrees with the estimate from the slope of $σ_2(ω$) vs 1/$ω$ plot, showing no evidence that the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum-rule is violated in the optical spectrum. We demonstrate that the optically estimated SC condensate is much smaller than the value obtained from the $μ$SR measurement of magnetic penetration depth. We also find an anomalous increase of conductivity in sub-millimeter region towards $ω$=0 below $T_c$, which suggests the microscopic inhomogeneity in the superconducting state. Both observations are discussed in relation with the inhomogeneous electronic state that might be inherent to high-$T_c$ cuprates.

No indication of static spin freezing was detected in either of the pure ($x$=1.0) or diluted samples. The observed magnitude of fluctuating fields indicates that the slow spin fluctuations represent an intrinsic property of kagomé network rather than impurity spins.

The 3-dimensional (3-d) superfluid density $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass), as well as the two dimensional superfluid density $n_{s2d}/m^{*}_{ab}$ (2-dimensional (2-d) area density of superconducting carriers / ab-plane effective mass), have been derived from the $μ$SR results of the magnetic-field penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ observed with external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the 2-d honeycomb layer of HfN / ZrN. In a plot of $T_{c}$ versus $n_{s2d}/m^{*}_{ab}$, most of the results lie close to the linear relationship found for underdoped high-$T_{c}$ cuprate (HTSC) and layered organic BEDT superconductors. In Li$_{x}$ZrNCl without THF intercalation, the superfluid density and $T_{c}$ for $x$ = 0.17 and 0.4 do not show much difference, reminiscent of $μ$SR results for some overdoped HTSC systems. Together with the absence of dependence of $T_{c}$ on average interlayer distance among ZrN / HfN layers, these results suggest that the 2-d superfluid density $n_{s2d}/m^{*}_{ab}$ is a dominant determining factor for $T_{c}$ in the intercalated nitride-chloride systems. We also report $μ$SR and magnetization results on depinning of flux vortices, and the magnetization results for the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ and the penetration depth $λ$. Reasonable agreement was obtained between $μ$SR and magnetization estimates of $λ$. We discuss the two dimensional nature of superconductivity in the nitride-chloride systems based on these results.

We have also measured the optical conductivity, and studied the dynamic response of the extended Hubbard model with realistic parameters, using a dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method. In contrast to earlier work, we do not find a long-lived exciton, but rather these results suggest that the excitation spectrum comprises a holon-antiholon continuum together with a broad resonance.

The magnetic ground state of an electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_x$CuO$_{4+α-δ}$ ($x=0.11, α\simeq0.04$) has been studied by means of muon spin rotation/relaxation (\msr) over a wide variety of oxygen depletion, $0.03\leδ\le0.12$. Appearance of weak random magnetism over entire crystal volume has been revealed by a slow exponential relaxation. The absence of $δ$-dependence for the random magnetism and the multiplet pattern of muon Knight shift at higher fields strongly suggest that the random moments are associated with excited Pr$^{3+}$ ions under crystal electric field.
