Antiferromagnetic topological insulators (AF TIs) are predicted to exhibit exotic physical properties such as gigantic optical and topological magnetoelectric responses. While a key to achieving such phenomena relies on how to break the symmetry protecting the Dirac-cone surface state (SS) and acquire the mass of Dirac fermions, the mechanism has yet to be clarified. To address this issue, we carried out micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy for GdBi hosting the type-II AF order, and uncovered the stripe-type 2$\times$1 reconstruction of the Fermi surface associated with the AF band folding. Intriguingly, in contrast to NdBi with the type-I AF order displaying the surface-selective Dirac-fermion mass, GdBi shows massless behavior irrespective of AF domains due to the robust topological protection. These results strongly suggest a crucial role of the ThetaTD (time-reversal and translational) symmetry to create the Dirac-fermion mass in AF TIs.

We investigate the anomalous thermal Hall effect (ATHE) in Weyl superconductors realized by the $E_{1u}$ ($p$-wave and $f$-wave) chiral superconducting order for the point group $D_{6h}$. Using the quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, we analyze the influence of the impurity scattering and the line nodal excitations on the ATHE, and compare it with the intrinsic (topological) contribution. Because the transverse response is sensitive to the slope of the density of states at the Fermi surface, the extrinsic ATHE vanishes in both the weak (Born) and strong (unitarity) scattering limits. The thermal Hall conductivity (THC) is maximal at intermediate impurity strengths when there is a large slope of the density states in the impurity bands close to the Fermi energy. Under these conditions, the extrinsic ATHE dominates the intrinsic ATHE even at low temperatures. The extrinsic ATHE is sensitive to line nodal excitations, whereas the intrinsic ATHE is not. When the line nodes in the gap involve the sign change of the order parameter, the extrinsic contribution to the THC is suppressed even though the phase space for low energy excitation is large. In contrast, if the nodes are not accompanied by such a sign change, the extrinsic ATHE is significantly enhanced. Our results form a basis for the comprehensive analysis of anomalous thermal transport in Weyl superconductors.

The oxygen intercalation and hole do** resulted in expansion of the c-axis length, contributing to improved electrical conduction. We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of AlB2 which is isostructural to high-temperature superconductor MgB2. Using soft-x-ray photons, we accurately determined the three-dimensional bulk band structure and found a highly anisotropic Dirac-cone band at the K point in the bulk hexagonal Brillouin zone. This band disperses downward on approaching the H point while kee** its degeneracy at the Dirac point, producing a characteristic Dirac nodal line along the KH line. We also found that the band structure of AlB2 is regarded as a heavily electron-doped version of MgB2 and is therefore well suited for fully visualizing the predicted Dirac nodal line. The present results suggest that (Al,Mg)B2 system is a promising platform for studying the interplay among Dirac nodal line, carrier do**, and possible topological superconducting properties.

Fundamental concepts in quantum physics and technological applications ranging from the detection of gravitational waves to the generation of stimulated Brillouin scattering rely on the interaction between the optical and the mechanical degrees of freedom.\ A key parameter to engineer this interaction is the spatial overlap between the two fields, optimized in carefully designed resonators on a case-by-case basis.\ Disorder is an alternative strategy to confine light and sound at the nanoscale.\ However, it lacks an \textit{a priori} mechanism guaranteeing a high degree of co-localization due to the inherently complex nature of the underlying interference process.\ Here, we propose a way to address this challenge by using GaAs/AlAs vertical distributed Bragg reflectors with embedded geometrical disorder.\ Due to a remarkable coincidence in the physical parameters governing light and motion propagation in these two materials, the equations for both longitudinal acoustic waves in the growth direction and normal-incidence light become practically equivalent for excitations of the same wavelength.\ This guarantees spatial overlap between photons and phonons leading to a statistically significant enhancement in the vacuum optomechanical coupling rate, $g_{0}$, and making this system a promising candidate to explore Anderson localization of high frequency ($\sim$ 20 GHz) phonons enabled by cavity optomechanics.\

Superconductivity and magnetism are mutually exclusive in most alloys and elements, so it is striking that superconductivity emerges around a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) in many strongly correlated electron systems (SCES). In the latter case superconductivity is believed to be unconventional and directly influenced by the QCP. However, experimentally unconventional superconductivity has neither been established nor directly been linked to any mechanism of the QCP. Here we report measurements in the heavy-fermion superconductors CeIrSi$_3$ and CeRhSi$_3$. The measurements were performed with a newly developed system, first of its kind, that allows high-resolution studies of the superconducting gap structure under pressure. Superconductivity in CeIrSi$_3$ shows a change from an excitation spectrum with a line-nodal gap to one which is entirely gapful when pressure is close but not yet at the QCP. In contrast, CeRhSi$_3$ does not possess an obvious pressure-tuned QCP and the superconducting phase remains for all accessible pressures with a nodal gap. Combining both results suggests that unconventional behaviours may be connected with the coexisting antiferromagnetic order. This study provides a new viewpoint on the interplay of superconductivity and magnetism in SCES.

The Fe concentration dependence of $^{59}$Co-NQR spectra at low temperatures indicates that the first-order FM transition occurs at least above $x$ = 1%. The magnetic fluctuations along the $c$ axis detected by the nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate $1/T_2$ exhibit an anomaly at $T_\mathrm{max}$ $\sim$ 20 K and enhance with increasing $x$. These results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and indicate the presence of prominent critical fluctuations at the TCP in this system.

In the $c$-axis uniaxial pressure ($P_{\parallel c}$) measurement, on the other hand, we observed a ferromagnetic transition in zero magnetic field along the $c$-axis above $P_{\parallel c}$ = 0.08 GPa. The anomaly of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by the temperature $\left[ (T_1 T)^{-1} \right]$ at $T$ = 20 K is suppressed by $P_{\parallel b}$ and slightly enhanced by $P_{\parallel c}$. The anisotropic uniaxial pressure response indicates that uniaxial pressure is a good parameter for tuning the Ising magnetism in UCoAl.

This article describes the Fermi surface properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and its alloy systems CeRu$_2$(Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$)$_2$ and Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Ru$_2$Si$_2$ studied by the de Haas - van Alphen (dHvA) effect. We pay particular attention to how the Fermi surface properties and the f electron state change with magnetic properties, in particular how they change associated with metamagnetic transition and quantum phase transition. After summarizing the important physical properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$, we present the magnetic phase diagrams of CeRu$_2$(Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$)$_2$ and Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Ru$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of temperature, magnetic field and concentration $x$. From the characteristic features of the magnetic phase diagram, we argue that the ferromagnetic interaction in addition to the anitferromagnetic interaction and the Kondo effect is responsible for the magnetic properties and that the metamagnetic transitions in these systems are relevant to the ferromagnetic interaction. We summarize the Fermi surface properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ in fields below the metamagnetic transition where the f electron state is now well understood theoretically as well as experimentally. We present experimental results in fields above the metamagnetic transitions in CeRu$_2$(Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$)$_2$ and Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Ru$_2$Si$_2$ as well as CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ to show that the Fermi surface properties above the metamagnetic transitions are significantly different from those below in many important aspects. We argue that the Fermi surface properties above the metamagnetic transitions are not appropriately described in terms of either itinerant or localized f electron. The experimental results in fields below the metamagnetic transitions in CeRu$_2$(Si$_x$Ge$_{1-x}$)$_2$ and Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Ru$_2$Si$_2$ are presented to discuss the f electron state in the ground state. We have investigated the field-angle variation of the specific heat C(H, phi, theta) of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt3 at low temperatures T down to 50 mK, where phi and theta denote the azimuthal and polar angles of the magnetic field H, respectively. For T = 88 mK, C(H, theta=90) increases proportionally to H^{1/2} up to nearly the upper critical field Hc2, indicating the presence of line nodes. By contrast, C(H, theta=0) deviates upward from the H^{1/2} dependence for (H/Hc2)^{1/2} > 0.5. This behavior can be related to the suppression of Hc2 along the c direction, whose origin has not been resolved yet. Our data show that the unusual Hc2 limit becomes marked only when theta is smaller than 30. In order to explore the possible vertical line nodes in the gap structure, we measured the phi dependence of C in wide T and H ranges. However, we did not observe any in-plane angular oscillation of C within the accuracy of dC/C~0.5%. This result implies that field-induced excitations of the heavy quasiparticles occur isotropically with respect to phi, which is apparently contrary to the recent finding of a twofold thermal-conductivity oscillation.

We performed nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements on itinerant-electron metamagnet UCoAl in order to investigate the critical behavior of the magnetism near a metamagnetic (MM) critical endpoint (CEP). We derived c-axis magnetization $M_c$ and its fluctuation $S_c$ from the measurements of Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ as a function of the c-axis external field ($H_c$) and temperature ($T$). We developed contour plots of $M_c$ and $S_c$ on the $H_c$ - $T$ phase diagram, and observed the strong divergence of $S_c$ at the CEP. The critical exponents of $M_c$ and $S_c$ near the CEP are estimated, and found to be close to the universal properties of a three-dimensional (3-D) Ising model. We indicate that the critical phenomena at the itinerant-electron MM CEP in UCoAl have a common feature as a gas-liquid transition.

In addition to the main line and high-binding energy satellite structure recognized in the core-level spectra of uranium compounds, a shoulder structure on the lower binding energy side of the main lines of localized and nearly localized uranium compounds was also found. The spectral line shapes show a systematic variation depending on the U 5f electronic structure. The core-level spectra of UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, and UNi2Al3 are rather similar to those of itinerant compounds, suggesting that U 5f electrons in these compounds are well hybridized with ligand states. On the other hand, the core-level spectra of UPd2Al3 and UPt3 show considerably different spectral line shapes from those of the itinerant compounds, suggesting that U 5f electrons in UPd2Al3 and UPt3 are less hybridized with ligand states, leading to the correlated nature of U 5f electrons in these compounds. The dominant final state characters in their core-level spectra suggest that the numbers of 5f electrons in UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, UNi2Al3, and UPd2Al3 are close to but less than three, while that of UPt3 is close to two rather than to three.

Measurements of low temperature transport and thermodynamic properties have been used to characterize the non-Fermi liquid state of the itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn$_2$. We observe a $T^{5/3}$ temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity at zero field, which becomes $T^2$ like in an applied field of 9 T. In zero field we also measured the thermal conductivity, and we see a novel linear in $T$ dependence of the difference between the thermal and electrical resistivities. Heat capacity measurements, also at zero field, reveal an upturn in the electronic contribution at low temperatures when the phonon term is subtracted. Taken together, we argue that these properties are consistent with a marginal Fermi liquid state which is predicted by a mean-field model of enhanced spin fluctuations on the border of ferromagnetism in three dimensions. We compare our data to quantitative predictions and establish this model as a compelling theoretical framework for understanding ZrZn$_2$.

The field-orientation dependent thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ was measured down to very low temperatures and under magnetic fields throughout three distinct superconducting phases: A, B, and C phases. In the C phase, a striking twofold oscillation of the thermal conductivity within the basal plane is resolved reflecting the superconducting gap structure with a line of node along the a axis. Moreover, we find an abrupt vanishing of the oscillation across a transition to the B phase, as a clear indication of a change of gap symmetries. We also identify extra two line nodes below and above the equator in both B and C phases. From these results together with the symmetry consideration, the gap function of UPt$_3$ is conclusively determined as a $E_{1u}$ representation characterized by a combination of two line nodes at the tropics and point nodes at the poles.

The absence of Fermi surface reconstruction across the critical composition suggests that SDW quantum criticality is more appropriate than local quantum criticality in CeRu2(Si[1-x]Ge[x])2.

Explorations of the order-disorder transformation in vortex matter in single crystals of tetragonal structured (c/a $\sim$3) borocarbide superconductors, $YNi_2B_2C$ and $LuNi_2B_2C$, reveal that vortex arrays experience different effective pinning in different crystallographic directions. We surmise that correlation exists between the large anisotropy in effective pinning/disorder and the differences in the (local) symmetry transition from rhombohedral to (quasi) square vortex lattice(VL). For field along high symmetry directions, like, c-axis and ab-basal plane, the VL symmetry is close to square and the ordered state spans a large field interval. When the field is turned away from the c-axis towards ab-plane, at intermediate angles, the region of ordered state shrinks, in response to enhancement in effective pinning. At such intermediate angles the symmetry of the VL would be far from ideal triangular or square.

We demonstrate semiconductor superlattices or nanocavities as narrow band acoustic transducers in the sub-terahertz range. Using picosecond ultrasonics experiments in the transmission geometry with pump and probe incident on opposite sides of the thick substrate, phonon generation and detection processes are fully decoupled. Generating with the semiconductor device and probing on the metal, we show that both superlattices and nanocavities generate spectrally narrow wavepackets of coherent phonons with frequencies in the vicinity of the zone center and time durations in the nanosecond range, qualitatively different from picosecond broadband pulses usually involved in picosecond acoustics with metal generators. Generating in the metal and probing on the nanoacoustic device, we furthermore evidence that both nanostructured semiconductor devices may be used as very sensitive and spectrally selective detectors.

The temperature dependence of the optical conductivity spectrum of an itinerant ferromagnetic material, ZrZn$_2$, was obtained and the dynamical effective mass and the scattering rate were derived. The temperature dependence of the optical conductivity spectrum of an itinerant ferromagnetic material, ZrZn$_2$, was obtained and the dynamical effective mass and the scattering rate were derived. A renormalized Drude peak with a heavy effective mass developed at low temperatures. The effective mass rapidly increased below $\hbarω$ = 10 meV and at 10 K it was observed to be 3 times heavier than that at 300 K. The scattering rate also rapidly decreased below 10 meV at 10 K. These results indicate the creation of heavy quasiparticles at low temperatures due to spin fluctuations.

We show that the superconductivity observed recently in the weak itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn2 [C. Pfleiderer et al., Nature (London) 412, 58 (2001)] is due to remnants of a superconducting layer induced by spark erosion. Results of resistivity, susceptibility, specific heat and surface analysis measurements on high-quality ZrZn2 crystals show that cutting by spark erosion leaves a superconducting surface layer. The resistive superconducting transition is destroyed by chemically etching a layer of 5 microns from the sample. No signature of superconductivity is observed in rho(T) of etched samples at the lowest current density measured, J=675 Am-2, and at T < 45 mK. EDX analysis shows that spark-eroded surfaces are strongly Zn depleted. The simplest explanation of our results is that the superconductivity results from an alloy with higher Zr content than ZrZn2.

We describe a semiconductor multilayer structure based in acoustic phonon cavities and achievable with MBE technology, designed to display acoustic phonon Bloch oscillations. We show that forward and backscattering Raman spectra give a direct measure of the created phononic Wannier-Stark ladder. We also discuss the use of femtosecond laser impulsions for the generation and direct probe of the induced phonon Bloch oscillations. We propose a gedanken experiment based in an integrated phonon source-structure-detector device, and we present calculations of pump and probe time dependent optical reflectivity that evidence temporal beatings in agreement with the Wannier-Stark ladder energy splitting.

Zero-bias resistances of a single resistance-shunted Josephson junction are calculated as a function of the temperature by means of the path-integral Monte Carlo method in case a charging energy $E_{\rm C}$ is comparable with a Josephson energy $E_{\rm J}$. The low-temperature behavior of the zero-bias resistance changes around $α=R_{\rm Q}/R_{\rm S}=1$, where $R_{\rm S}$ is a shunt resistance and $R_{\rm Q}=h/(2e)^2$. The temperature dependence of the zero-bias resistance shows a power-law-like behavior whose exponent depends on $E_{\rm J}/E_{\rm C}$. These results are compared with the experiments on resistance-shunted Josephson junctions.

The present results suggest that the EC effect is less than the experimental error ($\sim$ 0.2 eV), which indirectly supports a scenario that electron-phonon interaction plays an essential role in the occurrence of superconductivity.

The Fermi surface and quasiparticle mass are found to vary smoothly with pressure up to 17.7 kbar unless the phase boundary {\it B$_x$}({\it P}) is crossed. The observed dHvA frequencies may be grouped into three according to their pressure dependences, which are largely positive, nearly constant or negative. It is suggested that the quasiparticle mass moderately increases as the boundary {\it B$_x$}({\it P}) is approached. DHvA effect measurements are also performed across the boundary at 16.8 kbar.

X-ray emission (XES) and absorption (XAS) spectra near the B-$K$ edge were measured on single-crystalline AlB$_2$ compound which is an isostructural diboride of superconducting MgB$_2$. The partial density of states (PDOS) of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ orbitals were derived from the polarization dependence of XES and XAS spectra. There are considerable amounts of PDOS near the Fermi energy in AlB$_2$ similarly to that in MgB$_2$, but there are almost no PDOS in $pσ$ orbitals of AlB$_2$ near the Fermi energy, i.e., a pseudo-gap in $pσ$ state and a broad metallic state in $pπ$ state are observed. The present result indirectly supports scenarios that the $pσ$ holes play an important role in the occurrence of superconductivity in MgB$_2$. The overall features of PDOS were found to be in good agreement with the result of band calculation of AlB$_2$, but a small discrepancy in the Fermi energy is observed, which is attributed to the Al vacancy in the compounds, i.e., the estimated concentration is Al$_{0.93}$B$_2$.
