Rapidly-rotating quantum droplets confined in a harmonic potential
Abstract: We consider a "symmetric" quantum droplet in two spatial dimensions, which rotates in a harmonic potential, focusing mostly on the limit of "rapid" rotation. We examine this problem using a purely numerical approach, as well as a semi-analytic Wigner-Seitz approximation (first developed by Baym, Pethick et al.) for the description of the state with a vortex lattice. Within this approximation we as… ▽ More

A two-state model for vortex nucleation in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate
Abstract: It is well-known that a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate forms vortices to carry the angular momentum. For a first vortex to nucleate at the trap center, the rotational frequency must become larger than a certain critical value. The vortex nucleation process, however, is sensitive to the trap shape. Abstract: We consider small systems of bosonic atoms rotating in a toroidal trap. Using the method of exact numerical diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian, we examine the transition from the Bose-Einstein condensed state to the Tonks-Girardeau state. The system supports persistent currents in a wide range between the two limits, even in the absence of Bose-Einstein condensation.

Stability of the solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation
Abstract: We examine the static and dynamic stability of the solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and demonstrate the intimate connection between them. All salient features related to dynamic stability are reflected systematically in static properties. We find, for example, the obvious result that static stability always implies dynamic stability and present a simple explanation of the fact that dyn… ▽ More

Solitary waves in elongated clouds of strongly-interacting bosons
Abstract: We examine the propagation of solitary waves in elongated clouds of trapped bosonic atoms as the confinement, the strength of the interatomic interaction, and the atom density are varied. We identify three different physical regimes and develop a general formalism that allows us to interpolate between them. Finally we pay special attention to the transition to the Tonks-Girardeau limit of strong… ▽ More

Vortex nucleation in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates
Abstract: We study the formation and stability of a single vortex state in a weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate that is confined in a rotating harmonic potential. Our results are consistent with the fact that any single off-center vortex is unstable. Furthermore, a vortex state located at the center of the cloud first becomes locally stable as the rotational frequency increases. Finally our study… ▽ More

Rotating Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions
Abstract: We examine the phase diagram of a Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms, interacting with an attractive pseudopotential, in a quadratic-plus-quartic potential trap rotating at a given rate. Investigating the behavior of the gas as a function of interaction strength and rotational frequency of the trap, we find that the phase diagram has three distinct phases, one with vortex excitation, one with cen… ▽ More

Hysteresis and persistent currents in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate with anharmonic confinement
Abstract: We examine a Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms that rotates in a quadratic-plus-quartic potential. It is shown that states of different circulation can be metastable. As a result, we demonstrate that the gas can exhibit hysteresis as the angular frequency of rotation of the trap is varied. The simplicity of the picture that emerges for small coupling strengths suggests that this system may be at… ▽ More
