The optical floating zone crystal growth technique is a well-established method for obtaining large, high-purity single crystals. While the floating zone method has been constantly evolving for over six decades, the development of high-pressure (up to 1000 bar) growth systems has only recently been realized via the combination of laser-based heating sources with an all-metal chamber. While our inaugural high-pressure laser floating zone furnace design demonstrated the successful growth of new volatile and metastable phases, the furnace design faces several limitations with imaging quality, heating profile control, and chamber cooling power. Here, we present a second-generation design of the high-pressure laser floating zone furnace, "Laser Optical Kristallmacher II" (LOKII), and demonstrate that this redesign facilitates new advances in crystal growth by highlighting several exemplar materials: $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$, and La$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. Notably, for La$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$, we demonstrate the feasibility and long-term stability of traveling solvent floating zone growth under a record pressure of 700 bar.

MnSiN$_2$ is a transition metal nitride with Mn and Si ions displaying an ordered distribution on the cation sites of a distorted wurtzite-derived structure. The Mn$^{2+}$ ions reside on a 3D diamond-like covalent network with strong superexchange pathways. We simulate its electronic structure and find that the N anions in MnSiN$_2$ act as $σ$- and $π$-donors, which serve to enhance the N-mediated superexchange, leading to the high Néel ordering temperature of $T_N$ = 443 K. Polycrystalline samples of MnSiN$_2$ were prepared to reexamine the magnetic structure and resolve previously reported discrepancies. An additional magnetic canting transition is observed at $T_\mathrm{cant}$ = 433 K and the precise canted ground state magnetic structure has been resolved using a combination of DFT calculations and powder neutron diffraction. The calculations favor a $G$-type antiferromagnetic spin order with lowering to $Pc^\prime$. Irreducible representation analysis of the magnetic Bragg peaks supports the lowering of the magnetic symmetry. The computed model includes a 10$^\circ$ rotation of the magnetic spins away from the crystallographic $c$-axis consistent with measured powder neutron diffraction data modeling and a small canting of 0.6$^\circ$.

Here we study the stability of charge order in the kagome metal ScV6Sn6. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements reveal high-temperature, short-range charge correlations at the wave vectors along q=(1/3,1/3,1/2) whose inter-layer correlation lengths diverge upon cooling. At the charge order transition, this divergence is interrupted and long-range order freezes in along q=(1/3,1/3,1/3), as previously reported, while disorder enables the charge correlations to persist at the q=(1/3,1/3,1/2) wave vector down to the lowest temperatures measured. Both short-range and long-range charge correlations seemingly arise from the same instability and both are rapidly quenched upon the introduction of larger Y ions onto the Sc sites. Our results validate the theoretical prediction of the primary lattice instability at q=(1/3,1/3,1/2), and we present a heuristic picture for viewing the frustration of charge order in this compound.

Single crystal growth methods are reported alongside magnetic, electronic, and thermodynamic measurements. YbV$_3$Sb$_4$ is a nonmagnetic metal with no collective phase transitions observed between 60mK and 300K. Conversely, EuV$_3$Sb$_4$ is a magnetic kagome metal exhibiting easy-plane ferromagnetic-like order below $T_\text{C}$=32K with signatures of noncollinearity under low field. Our discovery of YbV$_3$Sb$_4$ and EuV$_3$Sb$_4$ demonstrate another direction for the discovery and development of vanadium-based kagome metals while incorporating the chemical and magnetic degrees of freedom offered by a rare-earth sublattice.

The kagome superconductors KV$_3$Sb$_5$, RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, and CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ are known to display charge density wave (CDW) order which impacts the topological characteristics of their electronic structure. Details of their structural ground states and how they evolve with temperature are revealed here using single crystal X-ray crystallographic refinements as a function of temperature, carried out with synchrotron radiation. The compounds KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$ present 2$\times$2$\times$2 superstructures in the $Fmmm$ space group with a staggered tri-hexagonal deformation of vanadium layers. CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ displays more complex structural evolution, whose details have been unravelled by applying machine learning methods to the scattering data. Upon cooling through the CDW transition, CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ displays a staged progression of ordering from a 2$\times$2$\times$1 supercell and a 2$\times$2$\times$2 supercell into a final 2$\times$2$\times$4 supercell that persists to $T$ = 11 K and exhibits an average structure where vanadium layers display both tri-hexagonal and Star of David patterns of deformations. Diffraction from CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ under pulsed magnetic fields up to $μ_0H$ = 28 T suggest the real component of the CDW state is insensitive to external magnetic fields.

We track the evolution of charge correlations in the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as its parent, long-ranged charge density order is destabilized. Upon hole-do** do**, interlayer charge correlations rapidly become short-ranged and their periodicity is reduced by half along the interlayer direction. Beyond the peak of the first superconducting dome, the parent charge density wave state vanishes and incommensurate, quasi-1D charge correlations are stabilized in its place. These competing, unidirectional charge correlations demonstrate an inherent electronic rotational symmetry breaking in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, independent of the parent charge density wave state and reveal a complex landscape of charge correlations across the electronic phase diagram of this class of kagome superconductors. Our data suggest an inherent 2$k_f$ charge instability and the phenomenology of competing charge instabilities is reminiscent of what has been noted across several classes of unconventional superconductors.

Here we present the synthesis and characterization of the kagome metal TbV6Sn6 via single-crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetization, transport, and heat capacity measurements. Magnetization measurements reveal strong, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy rooted in the alignment of Tb3Å moments in the interplane direction below 4.3(2) K. TbV6Sn6 exhibits multiband transport behavior with high mobilities of charge carriers, and our measurements suggest TbV6Sn6 is a promising candidate for hosting Chern gaps driven via the interplay between Tb-site magnetic order and the band topology of the V-site kagome network.

The recently discovered family of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A: K, Rb Cs) kagome metals possess a unique combination of nontrivial band topology, superconducting ground states, and signatures of electron correlations manifest via competing charge density wave order. Little is understood regarding the nature of the charge density wave (CDW) instability inherent to these compounds and the potential correlation with the accompanying onset of a large anomalous Hall response. To understand the impact of the CDW order on the electronic structure in these systems, we present quantum oscillation measurements on single crystals of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Our data provides direct evidence that the CDW invokes a substantial reconstruction of the Fermi surface pockets associated with the vanadium orbitals and the kagome lattice framework. In conjunction with density functional theory modeling, we are able to identify split oscillation frequencies originating from reconstructed pockets built from vanadium orbitals and Dirac-like bands. Complementary diffraction measurements are further able to demonstrate that the CDW instability has a correlated phasing between neighboring V$_3$Sb$_5$ planes. These results provide critical insights into the underlying CDW instability in AV$_3$Sb$_5$ kagome metals and support minimal models of CDW order arising from within the vanadium-based kagome lattice.

Intertwining quantum order and nontrivial topology is at the frontier of condensed matter physics. A charge density wave (CDW) like order with orbital currents has been proposed as a powerful resource for achieving the quantum anomalous Hall effect in topological materials and for the hidden phase in cuprate high-temperature superconductors. However, the experimental realization of such an order is challenging. Here we use high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) to discover an unconventional charge order in a kagome material KV3Sb5, with both a topological band structure and a superconducting ground state. Through both topography and spectroscopic imaging, we observe a robust 2x2 superlattice. Spectroscopically, an energy gap opens at the Fermi level, across which the 2x2 charge modulation exhibits an intensity reversal in real-space, signaling charge ordering. At impurity-pinning free region, the strength of intrinsic charge modulations further exhibits chiral anisotropy with unusual magnetic field response. Theoretical analysis of our experiments suggests a tantalizing unconventional chiral CDW in the frustrated kagome lattice, which can not only lead to large anomalous Hall effect with orbital magnetism, but also be a precursor of unconventional superconductivity.

Synthesis of new materials that can host magnetic skyrmions and their thorough experimental and theoretical characterization are essential for future technological applications. The $β$-Mn-type compound FePtMo$_3$N is one such novel material that belongs to the chiral space group $P4_132$, where the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction is allowed due to the absence of inversion symmetry. We report the results of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements of FePtMo$_3$N and demonstrate that its magnetic ground state is a long-period spin helix with a Curie temperature of 222~K. The magnetic field-induced redistribution of the SANS intensity showed that the helical structure transforms to a lattice of skyrmions at $\sim$13~mT at temperatures just below $T_{\text C}$. Our key observation is that the skyrmion state in FePtMo$_3$N is robust against field cooling down to the lowest temperatures. Moreover, once the metastable state is prepared by field cooling, the skyrmion lattice exists even in zero field. Furthermore, we show that the skyrmion size in FePtMo$_3$N exhibits high sensitivity to the sample temperature and can be continuously tuned between 120 and 210~nm. This offers new prospects in the control of topological properties of chiral magnets.

Ferromagnets crystallizing in structures described by chiral cubic space groups, including compounds with the B20 or $β$-Mn structures, are known to host long-period chiral spin textures such as skyrmion lattices. These spin textures are stabilized by a competition between ferromagnetic exchange and antisymmetric Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange, which is enhanced by the spin-orbit coupling associated with high-atomic-number elements. For real-world application, it is desirable to find materials that can host compact skyrmion lattices at readily accessible temperatures. Here, we report on the crystal chemistry and magnetic phase diagrams of a family of compounds with the filled $β$-Mn structure, FePd$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Mo$_3$N with $T_C$ ranging from 175 K to 240 K. DC and AC magnetization measurements reveal magnetic phase diagrams consistent with the formation of a skyrmion pocket just below $T_C$. The magnitudes of ferromagnetic and DM exchanges are determined from the phase diagrams, demonstrating that the introduction of increasing amounts of Pt can be used to increase spin-orbit coupling in order to control the expected skyrmion lattice parameter between 140 nm and 65 nm while simultaneously increasing $T_C$.
