Hexagonal YMnO$_{3}$ is a prototype antiferromagnet which exhibits multiferroic behavior with the ferroelectric and magnetic transitions occurring at different temperatures. We observe an out-of-plane canting of the Mn$^{3+}$ magnetic moments using resonant X-ray diffraction (RXD) in a single crystal of this material. These canted moments result in the symmetry-forbidden (0,0,1) magnetic Bragg reflection, which is observed at the Mn $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. We also observe an unexpected difference in the RXD spectral shapes at different temperatures. Using ab initio calculations, we explore the possibility that this behavior arises due to the interference between scattering from the canted magnetic moments and parity-odd atomic multipoles on the Mn$^{3+}$ ions.

Detection of the energy conversion pathways, between photons, charge carriers, and the lattice is of fundamental importance to understand fundamental physics and to advance materials and devices. Yet, such insight remains incomplete due to experimental challenges in disentangling the various signatures on overlap** time scales. Here, we show that attosecond core-level X-ray spectroscopy can identify these interactions with attosecond precision and across a picosecond range. We demonstrate this methodology on graphite since its investigation is complicated by a variety of mechanisms occurring across a wide range of temporal scales. Our methodology reveals, through the simultaneous real-time detection of electrons and holes, the different dephasing mechanisms for each carrier type dependent on excitation with few-cycle-duration light fields. These results demonstrate the general ability of our methodology to detect and distinguish the various dynamic contributions to the flow of energy inside materials on their native time scales.

Structural characterization of actinide nanoparticles (NPs) is of primary importance and hard to achieve, especially for non-homogeneous samples with NPs below 3 nm. By combining High Energy X-ray Scattering (HEXS) and High-Energy-Resolution Fluorescence Detected X-ray Near-Edge Structure (HERFD XANES), we characterized for the first time both short- and medium-range order of ThO2 NPs obtained by chemical precipitation. With this methodology, a novel insight into the structure of NPs at different steps of their formation process is achieved. The Pair Distribution Function (PDF) reveals a high concentration of ThO2 small units similar to Th hexamer clusters mixed with 1 nm ThO2 NPs in the initial steps of formation. Drying the precipitates at 150 C promotes recrystallization of the smallest units into more thermodynamically stable ThO2 NPs. HERFD XANES at Th M4 edge, a direct probe of the f states, shows variations that we correlate to the break of the local symmetry around Th atoms, which most likely concerns surface atoms. Together, HEXS and HERFD are a powerful methodology to investigate actinide NPs and their formation mechanism.

The magnetic state of heavy metal Pt thin films in proximity to the ferrimagnetic insulator Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ has been investigated systematically by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and x-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity measurements combined with angle-dependent magnetotransport studies. To reveal intermixing effects as the possible cause for induced magnetic moments in Pt, we compare thin film heterostructures with different order of the layer stacking and different interface properties. For standard Pt layers on Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ thin films, we do not detect any static magnetic polarization in Pt. These samples show an angle-dependent magnetoresistance behavior, which is consistent with the established spin Hall magnetoresistance. In contrast, for the inverted layer sequence, Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ thin films grown on Pt layers, Pt displays a finite induced magnetic moment comparable to that of all-metallic Pt/Fe bilayers. This magnetic moment is found to originate from finite intermixing at the Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$/Pt interface. As a consequence, we found a complex angle-dependent magnetoresistance indicating a superposition of the spin Hall and the anisotropic magnetoresistance in these type of samples. Both effects can be disentangled from each other due to their different angle dependence and their characteristic temperature evolution.

All three techniques lead to similar spectra. Some differences remain close to the edge, both when comparing different calculations with each other and when comparing the calculations with earlier experimental data. We find that using the full potential does not lead to significant improvement over the atomic spheres approximation and that the effect of the core hole can be limited to the photoabsorbing atom alone. Do** CaS with Eu will not affect the Ca and S K-edge XANES of CaS significantly but may give rise to a pre-edge structure not present for clean CaS.

Cobalt ferrite ultrathin films with inverse spinel structure are among the best candidates for spin-filtering at room temperature. We have fabricated high-quality epitaxial ultrathin CoFe2O4 layers on Ag(001) following a three-step method: an ultrathin metallic CoFe2 alloy was first grown in coherent epitaxy on the substrate, and then treated twice with O2, first at RT and then during annealing. The epitaxial orientation, the surface, interface and film structure were resolved combining LEED, STM, Auger and in situ GIXRD. A slight tetragonal distortion was observed, that should drive the easy magnetization axis in plane due to the large magneto-elastic coupling of such a material. The so-called inversion parameter, i.e. the Co fraction occupying octahedral sites in the ferrite spinel structure, is a key element for its spin-dependent electronic gap. It was obtained through in-situ x-ray resonant diffraction measurements collected at both the Co and Fe K edges. The data analysis was performed using the FDMNES code and showed that Co ions are predominantly located at octahedral sites with an inversion parameter of 0.88 +- 0.05. Ex-situ XPS gave an estimation in accordance with the values obtained through diffraction analysis.

5d transition metal oxides offer new opportunities to test our understanding of the interplay of correlation effects and spin-orbit interactions in materials in the absence of a single dominant interaction. The subtle balance between solid-state interactions can result in new mechanisms that minimize the interaction energy, and in material properties of potential use for applications. We focus here on the 5d transition metal oxide NaOsO3, a strong candidate for the realization of a magnetically driven transition from a metallic to an insulating state exploiting the so-called Slater mechanism. Experimental results are derived from non-resonant and resonant x-ray single crystal diffraction at the Os L-edges. A change in the crystallographic symmetry does not accompany the metal-insulator transition in the Slater mechanism and, indeed, we find no evidence of such a change in NaOsO3. An equally important experimental observation is the emergence of the (300) Bragg peak in the resonant condition with the onset of magnetic order. The intensity of this space-group forbidden Bragg peak continuously increases with decreasing temperature in line with the square of intensity observed for an allowed magnetic Bragg peak. Our main experimental results, the absence of crystal symmetry breaking and the emergence of a space-group forbidden Bragg peak with develo** magnetic order, support the use of the Slater mechanism to interpret the metal-insulator transition in NaOsO3. We successfully describe our experimental results with simulations of the electronic structure and, also, with an atomic model based on the established symmetry of the crystal and magnetic structure.

An efficient first principles approach to calculate X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and X-ray natural circular dichroism (XNCD) is developed and applied in the near edge region at the K-and L1-edges in solids. Computation of circular dichroism requires precise calculations of X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) for circularly polarized light. For the derivation of the XAS cross section, we used a relativistic description of the photon-electron interaction that results in an additional term in the cross-section that couples the electric dipole operator with an operator $\mathbfσ\cdot (\mathbfε \times \mathbf{r})$ that we name spin-position. The numerical method relies on pseudopotentials, on the gauge including projected augmented wave method and on a collinear spin relativistic description of the electronic structure. We apply the method to the calculations of K-edge XMCD spectra of ferromagnetic iron, cobalt and nickel and of I L1-edge XNCD spectra of $α$-LiIO3, a compound with broken inversion symmetry. For XMCD spectra we find that, even if the electric dipole term is the dominant one, the electric quadrupole term is not negligible (8% in amplitude in the case of iron). The term coupling the electric dipole operator with the spin-position operator is significant (28% in amplitude in the case of iron). We obtain a sum-rule relating this new term to the spin magnetic moment of the p-states. In $α$-LiIO3 we recover the expected angular dependence of the XNCD spectra.

Below $T_N$ ($\approx27K$) we observe the satellite reflections $(0,0,τ)$, $(0,0,2τ)$, $(0,0,3τ)$ and $(0,0,1-3τ)$ where $τ\approx 0.140 \pm 0.001$. The dependence of the scattering intensity on X-ray polarization and azimuthal angle indicate that the odd harmonics are dominated by the out-of-plane ($\mathbf{\hat{c}}$-axis) magnetic dipole while the $(0,0,2τ)$ originates from the electron density distortions accompanying magnetic order. We observe dissimilar energy dependences of the diffraction intensity of the purely magnetic odd-harmonic satellites at the Fe $L_3$ edge. Utilizing first-principles calculations, we show that this is a consequence of the loss of threefold crystal symmetry in the multiferroic phase.

By means of circularly polarized x-ray beam at Dy L3 and Fe K absorption edges, the chiral structure of the electric quadrupole was investigated for a single crystal of DyFe3(BO3)4 in which both Dy and Fe ions are arranged in spiral manners. The integrated intensity of the resonant x- ray diffraction of space-group forbidden reflections 004 and 005 is interpreted within the electric dipole transitions from Dy 2p3 to 5d and Fe 1s to 4p, respectively. We have confirmed that the 2 handedness of the crystal observed at Dy L3 and Fe K edges is consistent with that observed at Dy M5 edge in the previous study. By analyzing the azimuth scans of the diffracted intensity, the electronic quadrupole moments of Dy 5d and Fe 4p are derived. The temperature profiles of the integrated intensity of 004 at the Dy L3 and the Fe K edges are similar to those of Dy-O and Fe-O bond lengths, while that at the Dy M5 edge does not. The results indicate that the helix chiral orientations of quadrupole moments due to Dy 5d and Fe 4p electrons are more strongly affected by the crystal fields than Dy 4f.

The emergence of a ferromagnetic component in $LaMnO_{3}$ with low Cr-for-Mn substitution has been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn and Cr K edges. The local magnetic moment strength for the Mn and Cr are proportional to each other and follows the macroscopic magnetization. The net ferromagnetic components of $Cr^{3+}$ and $Mn^{3+}$ are found antiferromagnetically coupled. Unlike hole do** by La site substitution, the inclusion of $Cr^{3+}$ ions up to x = 0.15 does not decrease the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion and consequently does not significantly affect the orbital ordering. This demonstrates that the emergence of the ferromagnetism is not related to JT weakening and likely arises from a complex orbital mixing.

X-ray absorption (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra at the L$_{2,3}$ edges of Mn in (Ge,Mn) compounds have been measured and are compared to the results of first principles calculation. Early \textit{ab initio} studies show that the Density Functional Theory (DFT) can very well describe the valence band electronic properties but fails to reproduce a characteristic change of sign in the L$_{3}$ XMCD spectrum of Mn in Ge$_3$Mn$_5$, which is observed in experiments. In this work we demonstrate that this disagreement is partially related to an underestimation of the exchange splitting of Mn 2$p$ core states within the local density approximation. It is shown that the change in sign experimentally observed is reproduced if the exchange splitting is accurately calculated within the Hartree-Fock approximation, while the final states can be still described by the DFT. This approach is further used to calculate the XMCD in different (Ge,Mn) compounds. It demonstrates that the agreement between experimental and theoretical spectra can be improved by combining state of the art calculations for the core and valence states respectively.

The local environment of nickel atoms in Y NiO3 across the pressure- induced insulator to metal (IM) transition was studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) supported by ab initio calculations. The monotonic contraction of the NiO6 units under applied pressure observed up to 13 GPa, stops in a limited pressure domain around 14 GPa, before resuming above 16 GPa. In this narrow pressure range, crystallographic modifications basically occur in the medium/long range, not in the NiO6 octahedron, whereas the evolution of the near-edge XAS features can be associated to metallization. Ab initio calculations show that these features are related to medium range order, provided that the Ni-O-Ni angle enables a proper overlap of the Ni eg and O 2p orbitals. Metallization is then not directly related to modifications in the average local geometry of the NiO6 units but more likely to an inter-octahedra rearrangement. These outcomes provides evidences of the bandwidth driven nature of the IM transition.

The ambient phase with highly Jahn-Teller (JT) distorted MnO6 octahedra is progressively substituted by a new phase with less-distorted JT MnO6 units. The electronic delocalization leading to the IM transition is finger-printed from the pre-edge XAS structure around 30 GPa. We observed that the phase transition takes place without any significant reduction of the JT distortion. This entails band-overlap as the driving mechanism of the IM transition.

We show theoretically that the photoionization process in a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber filled with a Raman-inactive noble gas leads to a constant acceleration of solitons in the time domain with a continuous shift to higher frequencies, limited only by ionization loss. This phenomenon is opposite to the well-known Raman self-frequency red-shift of solitons in solid-core glass fibers. We also predict the existence of unconventional long-range non-local soliton interactions leading to spectral and temporal soliton clustering. Furthermore, if the core is filled with a Raman-active molecular gas, spectral transformations between red-shifted, blue-shifted and stabilized solitons can take place in the same fiber.

We report the direct measurement of antiferromagnetic spin polarization at the oxygen sites in the multiferroic TbMn2O5, through resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering. This supports recent theoretical models suggesting that the oxygen spin polarization is key to the magnetoelectric coupling mechanism. The spin polarization is observed through a resonantly enhanced diffraction signal at the oxygen K edge at the commensurate antiferromagnetic wavevector. Using the fdmnes code we have accurately reproduced the experimental data. We have established that the resonance arises through the spin polarization on the oxygen sites hybridized with the square based pyramid Mn3+ ions. Furthermore we have discovered that the position of the Mn3+ ion directly influences the oxygen spin polarization.

'Forbidden' Bragg reflections of iron orthoborate Fe3BO6 were studied theoretically and experimentally in the vicinity of the iron K edge. Their energy spectra are explained as resulting from the interference of x-rays scattered from two inequivalent crystallographic sites occupied by iron ions. This particular structure property gives rise to complex azimuthal dependences of the reflection intensities in the pre-edge region as they result from the interplay of site specific dipole-quadrupole and quadrupole-quadrupole resonant scattering. Also evidenced is an isotropic character of the absorption spectrum. Self-absorption correction to the diffraction data, as well as possible contributions of thermal vibrations and magnetic order, are discussed. Particular care is given to extracting clean spectra from the data, and it is demonstrated that excellent results can be obtained even from measurements that appear corrupted by several effects such as poor crystal quality and multiple scattering.

Many of the recent experimental claims of such ordering rely on resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the oxygen K and iron L edges. We have re-examined this system and undertaken soft x-ray diffraction experiments on a high-quality single crystal. Contrary to previous claims in the literature, we show that the intensity observed at the Bragg forbidden (001/2)$_c$ reflection can be explained purely in terms of the low-temperature structural displacements around the resonant atoms. This does not necessarily mean that magnetite is not charge or orbitally ordered, but rather that the present sensitivity of resonant soft x-ray experiments does not allow conclusive demonstration of such ordering.

Resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) is a spectroscopy where both the power of site selective diffraction and the power of local absorption spectroscopy regarding atomic species are combined. By virtue of the dependence on the core level state energy and the three dimensional electronic structure of the intermediate state, this technique is specially suited to study charge, orbital or spin orderings and associated crystal distortions. In the case of charge ordering, we exploit the fact that atoms with closely related site symmetries but with small charge differences exhibit resonances at slightly different energies. The sensitivity of this effect allows for quantitative estimations of the charge disproportion. Opposite to fluorescence or absorption measurements, the power of diffraction relies on the capability of detecting differences that are smaller than the inverse lifetime of the core hole level. To account for the uncertainty of the crystallographic structure and the fact that the charge ordering must be disentangled from the associated atomic displacements, a complete methodology is proposed and applied to the low temperature phase of magnetite. Relative sensitivity on spin, toroidal and orbital ordering is also shown and compared in different transition metal oxide compounds, like V2O3 and GaFeO3.

We report on an extensive investigation of the multiferroic compound TbMnO$_3$. Non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering (NRXMS) revealed a dominant $A$-type domain. The temperature dependence of the intensity and wavevector associated with the incommensurate magnetic order was found to be in good agreement with neutron scattering data. XRS experiments were performed in the vicinity of the Mn $K$ and Tb $L_3$ edges in the high-temperature collinear phase, the intermediate temperature cycloidal/ferroelectric phase, and the low-temperature phase. In the collinear phase resonant $E1-E1$ satellites were found at the Mn $K$ edge associated with $A$-type but also $F$-type peaks. The azimuthal dependence of the $F$-type satellites (and their absence in the NRXMS experiments) indicates that they are most likely non-magnetic in origin. We suggest instead that they may be associated with an induced charge multipole. At the Tb $L_3$ edge resonant $A$- and $F$-type satellites ($E1-E1$) were observed in the collinear phase. These we attribute to a polarisation of the Tb 5$d$ states by the ordering of the Mn sublattice. In the cycloidal/ferroelectric phase a new set of resonant satellites appear corresponding to $C$-type order. These appear at the Tb $L_3$ edge only. In addition to a dominant $E1-E1$ component in the $σ-π^\prime$ channel, a weaker component is found in the pre-edge with $σ-σ^\prime$ polarization. Calculations of the XRS were performed using the $FDMNES$ code showing that the unrotated $σ-σ^\prime$ component of the Tb $L_3$ $C$-type peaks appearing in the ferroelectric phase contains a contribution from a multipole that is odd with respect to both space and time, known in various contexts as the anapole.

We have performed a quantitative analysis of recent resonant x-ray scattering experiments carried out in the antiferromagnetic phase of V_2O_3 by means of numerical ab-initio simulations. In order to treat magnetic effects, we have developed a method based on multiple scattering theory (MST) and a relativistic extension of the Schrödinger Equation, thereby working with the usual non relativistic set of quantum numbers $l,m,σ$ for angular and spin momenta. Electric dipole-dipole (E1-E1), dipole-quadrupole (E1-E2) and quadrupole-quadrupole (E2-E2) transition were considered altogether. We obtain satisfactory agreement with experiments, both in energy and azimuthal scans. All the main features of the V K edge Bragg-forbidden reflections with $h+k+l=$odd can be interpreted in terms of the antiferromagnetic ordering only, {\it ie}, they are of magnetic origin. In particular the ab-initio simulation of the energy scan around the (1,1,1)-monoclinic reflection excludes the possibility of any symmetry reduction due to a time-reversal breaking induced by orbital ordering.

We also note the apparent absence of a normal (non magnetic) linear dichroism in the data and speculate on the possible reasons for it. Given the importance of the implications of a non reciprocal effect for the physics of V_2O_3, one of the paradigmatic strongly correlated system, we point up the need for at least repeating the experiment under better controlled conditions and suggest possible tests for establishing unambiguously its existence.

A thorough tensor analysis of the Bragg-forbidden reflection (00.3)$_h$ in corundum systems having a global center of inversion, like V$_2$O$_3$ and $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, shows that anomalous x-ray resonant diffraction can access chiral properties related to the dipole-quadrupole (E1-E2) channel via an interference with the pure quadrupole-quadrupole (E2-E2) process. This is also confirmed by independent {\it ab initio} numerical simulations. In such a way it becomes possible, in this particular case, to estimate the intensity of the ``twisted'' trigonal crystal field ($C_3$ symmetry) and, in general, to detect chiral quantities in systems where dichroic absorption techniques are ineffective.
