Abstract:
In twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) devices, local strains often coexist and entangle with the twist-angle dependent moiré superlattice, both of which can significantly affect the electronic properties of TBG. Here, using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we investigate the fine evolution of the electronic structures of a TBG device with continuous variation of twist angles from 0.32° t…

In twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) devices, local strains often coexist and entangle with the twist-angle dependent moiré superlattice, both of which can significantly affect the electronic properties of TBG. Here, using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we investigate the fine evolution of the electronic structures of a TBG device with continuous variation of twist angles from 0.32° to 1.29°, spanning the first (1.1°), second (0.5°) and third (0.3°) magic angles. We reveal the exotic behavior of the flat bands and remote bands in both the energy space and real space near the magic angles. Interestingly, we observe an anomalous spectral weight transfer between the two flat band peaks in the tunneling spectra when approaching the first magic angle, suggesting strong inter-flat-bands interactions. The position of the remote band peak can be an index for the twist angle in TBG, since it positively correlates with the twist angle but is insensitive to the strain. Moreover, influences of the twist angle gradient on symmetry breaking of the flat bands are also studied.

Natural hyperbolic materials (HMs) in two dimensions (2D) have an extraordinarily high anisotropy and a hyperbolic dispersion relation. Some of them can even sustain hyperbolic polaritons with great directional propagation and light compression to deeply sub-wavelength scales due to their inherent anisotropy. Herein, the anisotropic optical features of 2D natural HMs are reviewed. Four hyperbolic polaritons (i.e., phonon polaritons, plasmon polaritons, exciton-polaritons, and shear polaritons) as well as their generation mechanism are discussed in detail. The natural merits of 2D HMs hold promise for practical quantum photonic applications such as valley quantum interference, mid-infrared polarizer, spontaneous emission enhancement, near-field thermal radiation, and a new generation of optoelectronic components, among others. These analyses' conclusion outlines existing issues and potential interesting directions for 2D natural HMs. These findings could spur more interest in anisotropic 2D atomic crystals in the future, as well as the quick generation of natural HMs for new applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics attract intensive investigations because of underlying science and their potential applications. Although many 2D systems have been observed/predicted to be ferroelectric or ferromagnetic, 2D materials with both ferroic properties are still scarce. By using first-principles calculations, we predict that hole-do** can induce robust ferromagnetism in 2D ferroelectric α-In2Se3 due to its unique flat band structure, and the Curie temperature (TC) can be much higher than room temperature. Moreover, the do** concentration, strain, and number of layers can effectively modulate the magnetic moment and the TC of the material. Interestingly, strong magnetoelectric coupling is found at the surface of hole doped multilayer α-In2Se3, which allows non-volatile electric control of magnetization. Our work provides a feasible approach for designing/searching 2D multiferroics with great potential in future device applications, such as memory devices and sensors.

We derive the general probability distribution function of stochastic work for quantum Otto engines in which both the isochoric and driving processes are irreversible due to finite time duration. The time-dependent power fluctuations, average power, and thermodynamic efficiency are explicitly obtained for a complete cycle operating with an analytically solvable two-level system. We show that, there is a trade-off between efficiency (or power) and power fluctuations.

We derive cooling rate and coefficient of performance as well as their variances for a quantum Otto engine proceeding in finite-time cycle period. This machine consists of two driven strokes, where the system isolated from the heat reservoir undergoes finite-time unitary transformation, and two isochoric steps, where the finite-time system-bath interaction durations take the system away from the equilibrium even at the respective ends of the two stages. We explicitly calculate the statistics of cooling rate and coefficient of performance for the machine operating with an analytically solvable two-level system. We clarify the role of finite-time durations of four processes on the machine performance. We show that there is the trade-off between the performance parameter and its corresponding variance, thereby indicating that the cooling rate or coefficient of performance can be enhanced, but at the cost of increasing the corresponding fluctuations.

Cononsolvency is a phenomenon for which the solubility of a macromolecule decreases or even vanishes in the mixture of two good solvents. Although it has been widely applied in physicochemical, green chemical and pharmaceutical industry, its origin is still under active debate. Here, by using combined neutron total scattering, deuterium-labelling and all-atom molecular dynamic simulations, we demonstrated that it is the strong water/cosolvent attraction that leads to the cononsolvency. The combined approach presented here has opened a new route for investigating the most probable all-atom structure in macromolecular solutions and the thermodynamic origin of solubilities.

Elastic constants calculations predict the large stability range of Mo_{2}TiAlC_{2} under pressure. Several important thermodynamic properties are discussed detailedly, including the Debye temperature, thermal expansion coefficient, and heat capacity etc. The bonding properties are studied from the elastic quantities and electronic properties. The electronic properties are investigated, including the energy band structure, density of states, and so on. The evidence of the instability of Mo_{3}AlC_{2} and stability of Mo_{2}TiAlC_{2} are successfully obtained.
