Photoluminescence from bulk HfS$_2$ grown by the chemical vapor transport method is reported. A series of emission lines is apparent at low temperature in the energy range of 1.4 - 1.5 eV. Two groups of the observed excitonic transitions followed by their replicas involving acoustic and optical phonons are distinguished using classical intensity correlation analysis. The emission is attributed to the recombination of excitons bound to iodine (I$_2$) molecules intercalated between layers of HfS$_2$. The I$_2$ molecules are introduced to the crystal during the growth as halogen transport agents in the growth process. Their presence in the crystal is confirmed by secondary ion mass spectroscopy.

We perform a polarization-resolved magnetoluminescence study of excitons in ReS$_2$. We observe that two linearly polarized Rydberg series of excitons are accompanied by two other Rydberg series of dark excitons, brightened by an in-plane magnetic field. We perform a polarization-resolved magnetoluminescence study of excitons in ReS$_2$. We observe that two linearly polarized Rydberg series of excitons are accompanied by two other Rydberg series of dark excitons, brightened by an in-plane magnetic field. All series extrapolate to the same single-electron bandgap, indicating that the observed excitons originate either from the same valley or from two valleys related by the inversion symmetry, and are split by exchange interaction. To interpret our observations of the magnetic brightening, we have to assume the dominant spin-orbit coupling to be Ising-like, which hints at an approximate symmetry of the electronic states in ReS$_2$ which is higher than the crystal symmetry $C_i$.

Abstract:
We present experimental and theoretical results on the high-quality single-layer MoS$_{2}$ which reveal the fine structure of charged excitons, i.e., trions. In the emission spectra we resolve and identify two trion peaks, T$_{1}$ and T$_{2}$, resembling the pair of singlet and triplet trion peaks (T$_S$ and T$_{T}$) in tungsten-based materials. However, in polarization-dependent photoluminescence…

However, in polarization-dependent photoluminescence measurements we identify these peaks as novel intra- and inter-valley singlet trions, constituting the trion fine structure distinct from that already known in bright and dark 2D materials with large conduction-band splitting induced by the spin-orbit coupling. We show that the trion energy splitting in MoS$_{2}$ is a sensitive probe of inter- and intra-valley carrier interaction. With additional support from theory we claim that the existence of these singlet trions combined with an anomalous excitonic g-factor and the characteristic temperature dependence of the emission spectra together suggest that monolayer MoS$_{2}$ has a dark excitonic ground state, despite having "bright" single-particle arrangement of spin-polarized conduction bands.

Atomically thin semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides provide novel insights into the physics of many-body effects mediated by Coulomb interactions. Here, we report on temperature-dependent ($T$ = 7-295 K) reflectance contrast and photoluminescence studies of three-particle complexes in n-doped WS$_2$ monolayers. In low-temperature reflectance contrast spectra we observe distinct resonances of the neutral exciton, negative trion and exciton bound to a donor (X, X$^-$ and X$^D$). For temperatures above 80 K, reflectance contrast signatures of the X$^D$ disappear, whereas the X$^-$ remains detectable up to 240 K, despite the fact that the X$^D$ signal is more red-shifted from the neutral exciton than that of the X$^-$. This experimental observation underlines that in WS$_2$ the dissociation energy of X$^-$ considerably exceeds (factor of 2.5) that of X$^D$. In the laser-power dependent photoluminescence experiments, performed at room temperature, we demonstrate the control of the intensity ratio and energy position of the X and X$^-$ lines, which allows us to evaluate the trion binding energy. Moreover, we demonstrate that the room-temperature PL is sensitive to the environmental gas (ambient, N$_2$, He).

Here we show that placing a narrow GaAs quantum well in the AlAs shell effectively getters residual carbon acceptors leading to an \emph{unintentional} p-type do**. Magneto-optical studies of such a GaAs/AlAs core multi-shell NW reveal quantum confined emission. Theoretical calculations of NW electronic structure confirm quantum confinement of carriers at the core/shell interface due to the presence of ionized carbon acceptors in the 1~nm GaAs layer in the shell. Micro-photoluminescence in high magnetic field shows a clear signature of avoided crossings of the $n=0$ Landau level emission line with the $n=2$ Landau level TO phonon replica. The coupling is caused by the resonant hole-phonon interaction, which points to a large 2D hole density in the structure.

Avoided crossing of the emission lines of a nearly free positive trion and a cyclotron replica of an exciton bound to an interface acceptor has been observed in the magneto-photoluminescence spectra of p-doped GaAs quantum wells. Identification of the localized state depended on the precise map** of the anti-crossing pattern. The underlying coupling is caused by an exciton transfer combined with a resonant cyclotron excitation of an additional hole. The emission spectrum of the resulting magnetically tunable coherent state probes weak localization in the quantum well.
