Magnon spin currents in the ferrimagnetic garnet Tb3Fe5O12 with 4f electrons were examined through the spin-Seebeck effect and neutron scattering measurements. The compound shows a magnetic compensation, where the spin-Seebeck signal reverses above and below Tcomp = 249.5(4) K. Unpolarized neutron scattering unveils two major magnon branches with finite energy gaps, which are well-explained in the framework of spin-wave theory. Their temperature dependencies and the direction of the precession motion of magnetic moments, i.e. magnon polarization, defined using polarized neutrons, explain the reversal at Tcomp and decay of the spin-Seebeck signals at low temperatures. We illustrate an example that momentum- and energy-resolved microscopic information is a prerequisite to understanding the magnon spin current.

We demonstrate field-induced single-ion magnetic anisotropy resulting from the multiorbital Kondo effect on the diluted ytterbium alloy $(\mathrm{Lu}_{1-x}\mathrm{Yb}_x)\mathrm{Rh}_2\mathrm{Zn}_{20}$. Single-ion anisotropic metamagnetic behavior is revealed in low-temperature regions where the local Fermi-liquid state is formed. Specific hea, low-field magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity indicate reproduction of the ground-state properties by the $\mathrm{SU}(N = 8)$ Kondo model with a relatively large $c$-$f$ hybridization of $T_{\mathrm{K}} = 60.9 \ \mathrm{K}$. Dynamical susceptibility measurements on $\mathrm{Yb}\mathrm{Rh}_2\mathrm{Zn}_{20}$ support realizing the multiorbital Kondo ground state in $(\mathrm{Lu}_{1-x}\mathrm{Yb}_x)\mathrm{Rh}_2\mathrm{Zn}_{20}$. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy becomes evident above $\sim5 \ \mathrm{T}$, which is lower than the isotropic Kondo crossover field of 22.7 T, verifying blurred low-lying crystal field states through the multiorbital Kondo effect.

We study structural and magnetic properties of rare-earth based semimetals RAuGe (R = Y, Gd-Tm, and Lu) using flux-grown single crystals. These compounds belong to the noncentrosymmetric polar space group P63mc. We confirm the systematic structural evolution at room temperature as a function of ionic radius of rare earths to clarify the isopointal crossover between two polar structures: three-dimensional LiGaGe-type and quasi-two-dimensional NdPtSb-type. Magnetism shows a characteristic anisotropy in reasonable agreement with the crystal electric field (CEF) theory; the easy-plane-type anisotropy for R = Tb and Dy turns into the Ising-type anisotropy for R = Er and Tm. We evaluate the CEF parameters based on the Stevens operators to reasonably reproduce the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibilities and specific heat for RAuGe (R = Tb-Tm). The estimated energy scale of the Ising gap (~ 11 meV) in TmAuGe is consistent with an excitation observed in an inelastic neutron scattering experiment. These findings suggest an opportunity for interplay between conduction electrons and nontrivial spin structures in the family of magnetic polar semimetals RAuGe.

In comparison to the 122-type FeSCs with a centrosymmetric tetragonal lattice structure (space group $I4/mmm$) at room temperature and an in-plane stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order at low temperature, the 112 system has a noncentrosymmetric structure (space group $P2_{1}$) with additional zigzag arsenic chains between Ca/La layers and a magnetic ground state with similar wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_{\mathrm{AF}}$ but different orientations of ordered moments in the parent compounds. Our INS study clearly reveals that the in-plane dispersions and the bandwidth of spin excitations in the superconducting CaLa-112 closely resemble to those in 122 systems. While the total fluctuating moments $\langle m^2 \rangle\approx 4.6\pm0.2 μ_B^2$/Fe are larger than 122 system, the dynamic correlation lengths are similar ($ξ\approx 10$ Å). These results suggest that superconductivity in iron arsenides may have a common magnetic origin under similar magnetic exchange couplings with a dual nature from local moments and itinerant electrons, despite their different magnetic patterns and lattice symmetries.

The main driven force of the electronic nematic phase in iron-based superconductors is still under debate. Here, we report a comprehensive study on the nematic fluctuations in a non-superconducting iron pnictide system BaFe$_{1.9-x}$Ni$_{0.1}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$ by electronic transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. Previous neutron diffraction and transport measurements suggested that the collinear antiferromagnetism persists to $x=0.8$, with similar Néel temperature $T_N$ and structural transition temperature $T_s$ around 32 K, but the charge carriers change from electron type to hole type around $x=$ 0.5. In this study, we have found that the in-plane resistivity anisotropy also highly depends on the Cr do**s and the type of charge carriers. While ARPES measurements suggest possibly weak orbital anisotropy onset near $T_s$ for both $x=0.05$ and $x=0.5$ compounds, INS experiments reveal clearly different onset temperatures of low-energy spin excitation anisotropy, which is likely related to the energy scale of spin nematicity. These results suggest that the interplay between the local spins on Fe atoms and the itinerant electrons on Fermi surfaces is crucial to the nematic fluctuations of iron pnictides, where the orbital degree of freedom may behave differently from the spin degree of freedom, and the transport properties are intimately related to the spin dynamics.

In the local or itinerant extreme, magnetic excitations can be described by the Heisenberg model which treats electron spins as localized moments, or by the itinerant-electron model where the exchange interaction between electrons leads to unequal numbers of electrons with up and down spins. However, it has been elusive when both local moments and itinerant electrons are present in the intermediate range. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence on the coexistence of and interplay between local moments and itinerant electrons in a van der Waals metallic ferromagnet Fe$_{2.72}$GeTe$_{2}$, which can sustain tunable room-temperature ferromagnetism down to the monolayer limit. We find that there exist ferromagnetic spin-wave excitations dispersing from the zone center at low energies resulting from local moments, and a column-like broad continuum at the zone boundary at high energies up to over 100 meV resulting from itinerant electrons. Unlike the two-dimensional crystal structure, the low-energy mode exhibits a three-dimensional nature, and the high-energy mode also has an out-of-plane dependence. Both modes persist well above the Curie temperature of 160 K. Our neutron spectroscopic data reveal that the low-energy spin waves at 100 K are more coherent than those at 4 K, which is evidence of the weakening of the Kondo screening at high temperatures. These results unambiguously demonstrate the coexistence of local moments and itinerant electrons, and the Kondo effect between these two components in Fe$_{2.72}$GeTe$_{2}$. Such behaviors are generally expected in heavy-fermion systems with heavy $f$ electrons but rarely clearly observed in materials with light $d$ electrons. These findings shed light on the understanding of magnetism in transition-metal compounds.

We show the structures of magnetic excitations in spin-1/2 kagome-lattice antiferromagnets Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ investigated by inelastic neutron scattering in wide energy and momentum ranges. For Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, four single-magnon excitation modes were observed. Low-energy three modes are assigned to be transverse modes and the high-energy fourth mode is suggested to be an amplitude mode. It was found that the broad excitation continuum without a marked structure spreads in a wide energy range from $0.15J$ to approximately $2.5J$ in contrast to the clearly structured excitation continuum observed in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. These findings strongly suggest spinon excitations as elementary excitations in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. In Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, singlet-triplet excitations from the pinwheel VBS state and their ghost modes caused by the enlargement of the chemical unit cell were clearly confirmed. It was found that the excitation continuum is structured in the low-energy region approximately below $J_{\mathrm{avg}}$ and the almost structureless high-energy excitation continuum extends to approximately $2.6J_{\mathrm{avg}}$. The characteristics of the high-energy excitation continuum are common to both Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, irrespective of their ground states. The experimental results strongly suggest that the spin liquid component remains in the ground state as quantum fluctuations in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$.

In most of iron-based superconductors, $S({\bf Q},E)$ is enhanced at ${\bf Q}$ = ($π$, 0), where the "magnetic resonance mode" is commonly observed in the unfolded Brillouin zone. Constant-$E$ cuts of $S({\bf Q},E)$ suggest that the enhancement is not uniform in the magnetic excitation, and limited around ${\bf Q}$ = ($π$, 0). This result is consistent with the theoretical simulation of the magnetic resonance mode due to the Bardeen$-$Cooper$-$Schrieffer coherence factor with the sign-reversing order parameter of s$_{\pm}$ wave.

Rev. B {\bf 91}, 224404 (2015), {\it ibid}. {\bf 93}, 094416 (2016)]. We confirmed the presence of a peak-structure in the $ω$-dependence of the local spin susceptibility $χ''(ω)$ of superconducting (SC) LSCO with a peak energy of 16--19 meV, where the spin excitations intersect optical phonon branches. A comparable peak-structure is not observed in the insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$, LSNO, and heavily overdoped LSCO with $x$ = 0.30. A dome-shaped $x$-dependence of the integrated intensity around the peak energies is revealed for SC phase by summarizing the present and previously reported results. Furthermore, our phonon calculation on LCO shows the existence of two optical branches at $\sim$19 meV that could stabilize stripe-alignment of carriers due to out-of-plane vibrations of Cu or O of the CuO$_2$ planes. These results indicate the interplay among spin, charge, and lattice dynamics and suggest that the intensity enhancement is associated with their composite excitations.

We perform thermodynamic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements to study the lattice dynamics (phonons) of a cubic collinear antiferromagnet Cu$_3$TeO$_6$ which hosts topological spin excitations (magnons). While the specific heat and thermal conductivity results show that the thermal transport is dominated by phonons, the deviation of the thermal conductivity from a pure phononic model indicates that there is a strong coupling between magnons and phonons. In the INS measurements, we find a mode in the excitation spectra at 4.5 K, which exhibits a slight downward dispersion around the Brillouin zone center. This mode disappears above the Néel temperature, and thus cannot be a phonon. Furthermore, the dispersion is distinct from that of a magnon. Instead, it can be explained by the magnon-polaron mode, which is new collective excitations resulting from the hybridization between magnons and phonons. We consider the suppression of the thermal conductivity and emergence of the magnon-polaron mode to be evidence for magnon-phonon coupling in Cu$_3$TeO$_6$.

To elucidate the spin dynamics of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, which couples with the charge degree of freedom, the spin excitations spanning the characteristic energy ($E_{\rm cross}$ $\sim$35-40 meV) are investigated for underdoped $x$ = 0.10 and optimally doped (OP) $x$ = 0.16 through inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Analysis based on a two-component picture of high-quality data clarified the possible coexistence of uprightly standing incommensurate (IC) excitations with gapless commensurate (C) excitations in the energy-momentum space. The IC component weakens the intensity toward $E_{\rm cross}$ with increasing energy transfer ($\hbarω$), whereas the C component strengthens at high-$\hbarω$ regions. The analysis results imply that the superposition of two components with a particular intensity balance forms an hourglass-shaped excitation in appearance. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the intensity of each component exhibits different behaviors; the IC component disappears near the pseudo-gap temperature ($T$*) upon warming, whereas the C component is robust against temperature. These results suggest the itinerant electron spin nature and the localized magnetism of the parent La$_2$CuO$_4$ in IC and C excitations, respectively, similar to the spin excitations in the OP YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ with higher superconducting-transition temperatures.

Upon vanadium-do** to form LiFe$_{0.955}$V$_{0.045}$, the transverse incommensurate spin excitations in LiFeAs transform into longitudinally elongated in a similar fashion as that of potassium (hole) doped Ba$_{0.7}$K$_{0.3}$Fe$_2$As$_2$, but with dramatically enhanced magnetic scattering and elimination of superconductivity. This is different from the suppression of the overall magnetic excitations in hole doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and the enhancement of superconductivity near optimal hole do**. These results are consistent with density function theory plus dynamic mean field theory calculations, suggesting that vanadium-do** in LiFeAs may induce an enlarged effective magnetic moment $S_{eff}$ with a spin crossover ground state arising from the inter-orbital scattering of itinerant electrons.

The delafossite family of compounds with a triangular lattice of rare earth ions has been recently proposed as a candidate host for quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. To realize QSLs, the crystal-electric-field (CEF) ground state of the rare earth ions should be composed of a doublet that allows sizable quantum tunneling, but till now the knowledge on CEF states in the delafossite compounds is still limited. Here we employ inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study the CEF transitions in a powder sample of the delafossite NaErS$_2$, where the large total angular momentum $J = 15/2$ of the Er$^{3+} $ ions and the resulting plethora of CEF transitions enable an accurate fit of the CEF parameters. Our study reveals nearly isotropic spins with large $J_z = \pm 1/2$ components for the Er$^{3+}$ CEF ground states, which might facilitate the development of a QSL state. The scaling of the obtained CEF Hamiltonian to different rare earth ions suggests that sizable $J_z = \pm 1/2$ components are generally present in the CEF ground states, supporting the ternary sulfide delafossites as potential QSL hosts.

The strong excitations at 14.5 meV and 11.1 meV broaden rapidly around 15 K and 20 K, respectively, where each energy becomes comparable to twice of the superconducting gap. The strong excitations are ascribed to a quantum rattling, or a band motion of hydrogen, which arises only if the number of potential minima is larger than two.

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin resonance in the bilayer iron-based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. In contrast to its quasi-two-dimensional electron structure, three strongly $L$-dependent modes of spin resonance are found below $T_c=35$ K. The mode energies are below and linearly scale with the total superconducting gaps summed on the nesting hole and electron pockets, essentially in agreement with the results in cuprate and heavy fermion superconductors. This observation supports the sign-reversed Cooper pairing mechanism under multiple pairing channels and resolves the long-standing puzzles concerning the broadening and dispersive spin resonance peak in iron pnictides. More importantly, the triple resonant modes can be classified into odd and even symmetries with respect to the distance of Fe-Fe planes within the Fe-As bilayer unit. Thus, our results closely resemble those in the bilayer cuprates with nondegenerate spin excitations, suggesting that these two high-$T_c$ superconducting families share a common nature.

Understanding the overall features of magnetic excitation is essential for clarifying the mechanism of Cooper pair formation in iron-based superconductors. In particular, clarifying the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity is a central challenge because magnetism may play a key role in their exotic superconductivity. BaFe2As2 is one of ideal systems for such investigation because its superconductivity can be induced in several ways, allowing a comparative examination. Here we report a study on the spin fluctuations of the hole-overdoped iron-based superconductors Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.5 and 1.0; Tc = 36 K and 3.4 K, respectively) over the entire Brillouin zone using inelastic neutron scattering. We find that their spin spectra consist of spin wave and chimney-like dispersions. The chimney-like dispersion can be attributed to the itinerant character of magnetism. The band width of the spin wave-like dispersion is almost constant from the non-doped to optimum-doped region, which is followed by a large reduction in the overdoped region. This suggests that the superconductivity is suppressed by the reduction of magnetic exchange couplings, indicating a strong relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in iron-based superconductors.

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study temperature and energy dependence of spin excitations in optimally P-doped BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 superconductor (Tc = 30 K) throughout the Brillouin zone. In the undoped state, spin waves and paramagnetic spin excitations of BaFe2As2 stem from antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering wave vector QAF= (1/-1,0) and peaks near zone boundary at (1/-1,1/-1) around 180 meV. Replacing 30% As by smaller P to induce superconductivity, low-energy spin excitations of BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2form a resonance in the superconducting state and high-energy spin excitations now peaks around 220 meV near (1/-1,1/-1). These results are consistent with calculations from a combined density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, and suggest that the decreased average pnictogen height in BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 reduces the strength of electron correlations and increases the effective bandwidth of magnetic excitations.

Elucidating the nature of the magnetism of a high-temperature superconductor is crucial for establishing its pairing mechanism. The parent compounds of the cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors exhibit Néel and stripe magnetic order, respectively. However, FeSe, the structurally simplest iron-based superconductor, shows nematic order (Ts = 90 K), but not magnetic order in the parent phase, and its magnetic ground state is intensely debated. Here, we report inelastic neutron-scattering experiments that reveal both stripe and Néel spin fluctuations over a wide energy range at 110 K. On entering the nematic phase, a substantial amount of spectral weight is transferred from the Néel to the stripe spin fluctuations. Moreover, the total fluctuating magnetic moment of FeSe is ~ 60% larger than that in the iron pnictide BaFe2As2. Our results suggest that FeSe is a novel S = 1 nematic quantum-disordered paramagnet interpolating between the Néel and stripe magnetic instabilities.

Inelastic neutron scattering studies have been carried out on selected phonons and magnetic excitations of a crystal of superconducting (SC) Ca$_{10}$Pt$_4$As$_8$(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$ with the onset transition temperature $T_{\rm c}^{\rm onset} \sim$ 33 K to investigate the role that orbital fluctuations play in the Cooper pairing. The spectral weight of the magnetic excitations, $χ''({\bm Q}, ω)$ at ${\bm Q} = {\bm Q}_{\rm M}$ (magnetic $Γ$ points) is suppressed (enhanced) in the relatively low (high) $ω$ region. The maximum of the enhancement is located at $ω= ω_{\rm p} \sim$ 18 meV at temperature $T = 3$ K corresponding to the $ω_{\rm p}/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}^{\rm onset} \sim$ 6.3. This large value is rather favorable to the orbital-fluctuation mechanism of the superconductivity with the so-called $S_{++}$ symmetry. In the phonon measurements, we observed slight softening of the in-plane transverse acoustic mode corresponding to the elastic constant $C_{66}$. This softening starts at $T$ well above the superconducting $T_{\rm c}$, as $T$ decreases. An anomalously large increase in the phonon spectral weight of in-plane optical modes was observed in the range of $35 < ω< 40$ meV with decreasing $T$ from far above $T_{\rm c}$. Because this $ω$ region mainly corresponds to the in-plane vibrations of Fe atoms, the finding presents information on the coupling between the orbital fluctuation of the Fe 3$d$ electrons and lattice system, useful for studying possible roles of the orbital fluctuation in the pairing mechanism and appearance of the so-called nematic phase.

The evolution of electronic (spin and charge) excitations upon carrier do** is an extremely important issue in superconducting layered cuprates and the knowledge of its asymmetry between electron- and hole-do**s is still fragmentary. Here we combine x-ray and neutron inelastic scattering measurements to track the do** dependence of both spin and charge excitations in electron-doped materials. Copper L3 resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra show that magnetic excitations shift to higher energy upon do**. Their dispersion becomes steeper near the magnetic zone center and deeply mix with charge excitations, indicating that electrons acquire a highly itinerant character in the doped metallic state. Moreover, above the magnetic excitations, an additional dispersing feature is observed near the Γ-point, and we ascribe it to particle-hole charge excitations. These properties are in stark contrast with the more localized spin-excitations (paramagnons) recently observed in hole-doped compounds even at high do**-levels.

By means of neutron inelastic scattering, magnetic excitations and phonons were measured for a single crystal of slightly overdoped superconductor Ca10Pt4As8(Fe1-xPtxAs)10 (x ~ 0.2) with the transition temperature Tc of ~33 K. Below Tc, magnetic excitation spectra \{chi}"(Q, ω) measured at Q = QM [magnetic Γ points] are gapped, and in the relatively higher ω region, the \{chi}"(QM, ω)-increase was observed with decreasing T, where the maximum of the increase was found at ~18 meV at 3 K (<< Tc). These characteristics are favorable to orbital-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity with the so-called S++symmetry of the order parameter. The energy dependence of δQ-temperature(T) curve of the magnetic excitations seems to have anomalous behavior in rather wide T region above Tc, δQ being the width of the Q scan profile. In the phonon measurements, we observed softening of the in-plane TA mode, which corresponds to the elastic constant C66. This softening seems to start at rather high temperature T, as T is lowered. Additionally, anomalous increase in spectral weights of the TO-phonons at around QM in the region 35 < ω < 40 meV was found even above Tc, as T is lowered from ambient T . Because the spectral weights in this ω region mainly correspond to the in-plane motions of Fe atoms and because orbital fluctuations are expected to be strong at around QM, the result may present clues to investigate a possible coupling between the fluctuations of the orbitals and lattice system.

Using inelastic neutron scattering, spin fluctuations at different wavenumbers were observed under both superconducting domes around x = 0.1 and 0.4, but vanished at x = 0.2 corresponding to the Tc valley. Theoretical calculations indicate that the characteristic do** dependence of spin fluctuations is rationally explained as a consequence of the switching of the two intra-orbital nestings within Fe-3dYZ, ZX and 3dX2-Y2 by electron do**. The present results imply that the multi-orbital nature plays an important role in the do** and / or material dependence of the Tc of the iron pnictide superconductors.

Low-dimensional copper oxide lattices naturally manifest electronic states with strong short range quantum entanglement, which are known to lead to remarkable emergent material properties. However the nanometer scale many-body wavefunction is challenging to measure or manipulate in a simple way. In this study, X-ray induced $dd$ electronic transitions are used to suppress spin entanglement across a single lattice site in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain compound SrCuO$_2$, revealing a class of cuprate magnetic excitations that result from breaking the spin chain. These measurements are the first to employ two closely spaced X-ray resonances of copper (M$_2$ and M$_3$) as a form of natural 2-slit interferometer to distinguish between different types of electronic transition and resolve how they influence the dynamics of nearby spin-entangled electrons.

We present a comprehensive study of the temperature and do** dependence of the 500 meV peak observed at ${\bf q}=(π,0)$ in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on $\rm La_2CuO_4$. The intensity of this peak persists above the Néel temperature (T$_{N}$=320 K), but decreases gradually with increasing temperature, reaching zero at around T=500 K. The peak energy decreases with temperature in close quantitative accord with the behavior of the two-magnon $\rm B_{1g}$ Raman peak in $\rm La_2CuO_4$, and with suitable rescaling, agrees with the Raman peak shifts in $\rm EuBa_2Cu_3O_6$ and $\rm K_2NiF_4$. The overall dispersion of this excitation in the Brillouin zone is found to be in agreement with theoretical calculations for a two-magnon excitation. Upon do**, the peak intensity decreases analogous to the Raman mode intensity and appears to track the do** dependence of the spin correlation length. Taken together, these observations strongly suggest that the 500 meV mode is magnetic in character and is likely a two-magnon excitation.

A direct comparison with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements taken on the same sample, revealed an excellent agreement in terms of energy and momentum between the ARPES nodal kink and the soft part of the bond stretching phonon. Indeed, we find that the momentum space where a 63 meV kink is observed can be connected with a vector q=(xi,0,0) with xi~0.22, which corresponds exactly to the soft part of the bond stretching phonon mode. This result supports an interpretation of the ARPES kink in terms of electron-phonon coupling.

Abstract:
This paper has been withdrawn by the authors, because we had probably observed some spurious intensity with x=0.29 sample (Fig.3(b)). This came out after further studies of the detailed x-dependence of the highest energy LO phonon branch in LSCO.
