Examination of equilibrium radiation in plasma media shows that the spectral the energy distribution of such radiation is different from the Planck equilibrium radiation. Using the previously obtained general relations for the spectral energy density of equilibrium radiation in a system of charged particles, we consider radiation in an electron in the limiting case of an infinitesimal dam**. It is shown that zero vacuum fluctuations which are part of the full spectral energy distribution should be renormalized. In this case, the renormalized zero vacuum fluctuations depend on the electron density. A similar effect should exist in the general case of a quasineutral plasma.

We study the response of low-dimensional semiconductor superlattices to strong terahertz fields on condition of a strong suppression of inelastic scattering processes of electrons caused by the polar-optical phonons. For our study we employ a balance equations approach which allows investigating the response of the superlattices to strong terahertz fields taking account of both the inelastic and the strongly pronounced elastic scattering of electrons. Our approach provides a way to analyze the influence of the Bloch dynamics of electrons in a superlattice miniband side by side with the effects of the electron heating on the magnitude and the frequency dependence of a superlattice current responsivity in the terahertz frequency band. Our study shows that the suppression of the inelastic scattering caused either by a reduction of the superlattice dimensionality by lateral quantization or by a strong magnetic field application can give rise to a huge enhancement of the current responsivity. This enhancement can be interpreted in terms of the well pronounced electronic bolometric effect occurring due to the efficient electron heating in the low-dimensional superlattices by the incident terahertz fields.

We present a polarization-resolved and temperature-dependent Raman scattering study of AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Eu). In the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase, spectral weight redistribution is observed in the fully symmetric and non-symmetric scattering channels at different energies. An anisotropic Raman response is observed in the fully symmetric channel in spontaneously detwinned CaFe2As2 samples. We calculate the orbital-resolved electronic structures using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). We identify the electronic transitions corresponding to these two spectral features and find that the anisotropic Raman response originates from the lifted degeneracy of the dxz/yz orbitals in the broken symmetry phase.

Thermal conductivity, point contact spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission and Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed on BaFe1.9Pt0.1As2 single crystals obtained from the same synthesis batch in order to investigate the superconducting energy gap structure using multiple techniques. Low temperature thermal conductivity was measured in the superconducting state as a function of temperature and magnetic field, revealing an absence of quasiparticle excitations in the T=0 limit up to 15 T applied magnetic fields. Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy measurements were performed as a function of temperature using the needle-anvil technique, yielding features in the conductance spectra at both 2.5 meV and 7.0 meV scales consistent with a multi-gap scenario. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy probed the electronic band structure above and below the superconducting transition temperature of T_c=23 K, revealing an isotropic gap of magnitude ~3 meV on both electron and hole pockets. Finally, Raman spectroscopy was used to probe quasiparticle excitations in multiple channels, showing a threshold energy scale of 3 meV below T_c. Overall, we find strong evidence for an isotropic gap structure with no nodes or deep minima in this system, with a 3 meV magnitude gap consistently observed and a second, larger gap suggested by point contact spectroscopy measurements. We discuss the implications that the combination of these results reveal about the superconducting order parameter in the BaFe1-xPtxAs2 system and how this relates to similar substituted iron pnictides.

The current (voltage) responsivity of the superlattice-based diode detectors in the terahertz frequency band which includes the region of the polar optical phonon frequencies has been analyzed theoretically. Within the framework of the equivalent circuit approach an electro-dynamical model which allows one to analyze the responsivity taking into account the plasmon polariton excitation both in the substrate and in the contact layers of the diodes has been suggested. It has been shown that the presence of the plasmon polariton excitation gives rise to strong features in the frequency dependence of the superlattice-based diodes responsivity, i.e. to the resonance dips and peaks at frequencies of hybridized plasmons and optical phonons. It has been suggested that by judicious engineering of the superlattice-based diodes it would be possible to enhance substantially their responsivity in the terahertz frequency band.

Combining superconductor and semiconductors in nanostructure junctions was a challenging technological problem that attracted attention for long time [van Wees]. The radiative recombination of Cooper pairs was demonstrated, using a Nb/n-InGaAs/p-InP heterostructure [EL_Hayashi, PL_Hayashi], called Cooper pair LED [PL_Suemune, R_Suemune]. It has been suggested that the junction could produce entangled photon pairs [Benson, Gywat] needed for quantum information processing and communication. Here we demonstrate an enhanced radiative recombination of electron Copper pairs in inhomogeneous K$_{0.75}$Fe$_{1.75}$Se$_{2}$ (KFS) subjected to laser light upon cooling below superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ 28 K. The observation of this phenomena is possible due to fulfillment of the following three conditions: (1) Phase separation in superconducting KFS crystals is realized via naturally occurring heterostructure [mic_Charnukha, TEM_Wang]; (2) Partial Fe-vacancy ordered $n$-type semiconducting regions, sandwiched between Fe-vacancy free SC and vacancy-ordering AFM structure, forming active layers. The electronic structure of those active layer is tuned to induce Cooper pairs by the proximity effect [de Gennes] and/or to accept Cooper pair tunneling from the SC phase. In the active layer, the electron Cooper pair can radiatively recombine with two p-type holes [Asano] produced by laser photoexcitation; (3) In KFS nature provides at least 10$^{9}$ SC/$n$-type semiconducting/AFM insulating junctions per cm$^{3}$. For laser excitation energy of 1.92 eV ($λ$=647.1 nm) and power 0.68 mW focused to the spot of 40x80 $μ$m$^{2}$ the estimated internal quantum efficiency of the natural heterostructure at 10 K in the luminescence range of 700 to 1300 nm is close to 100% and is likely limited by availability of the $p$-type holes.

Recently CsTlCl3 and CsTlF3 perovskites were theoretically predicted to be potential superconductors if they are optimally doped. The synthesis of these two compounds, together with a complete characterization of the samples are reported. CsTlCl3 is obtained as orange crystals in two different polymorphs: a tetragonal (I4/m) and a cubic (Fm-3m) phase. CsTlF3 is formed as a light brown powder, also as a double cubic perovskite (Fm-3m). In all three CsTlX3 phases Tl1+ and Tl3+ were located in two different crystallographic positions that accommodate their different bond lengths. In CsTlCl3 some Tl vacancies are found in the Tl1+ position. The charge ordering between Tl1+ and Tl3+ was confirmed by x-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectroscopy of CsTlCl3 under high pressure (58 GPa) did not indicate any phase transition to a possible single Tl2+ state. However, the highly insulating material becomes less resistive with increasing high pressure, while undergoing a change in the optical properties, from transparent to deeply opaque red, indicative of a decrease of the band gap. The theoretical design and experimental validation of the existence of CsTlF3 and CsTlCl3 cubic perovskites is the necessary first step in confirming the theoretical prediction of superconductivity in these materials.

Generation of terahertz harmonics by frequency multiplication with a semiconductor superlattice due to an excitation of relaxation oscillations by incident waves is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the relaxation oscillations excitation becomes feasible if the superlattice dc resistance is low enough in comparison with a characteristic radiation impedance of the external waveguide system. The power of the generated harmonics as a function of the incident wave power demonstrates a threshold-like behavior at a specific input power level dependent on the superlattice peak current. We demonstrate that for typical superlattice parameters the roll-of frequency of the generated harmonics is mostly specified by the plasma frequency of electrons in a superlattice miniband. We argue that an increase of the superlattice miniband widths could essentially enhance both the efficiency and the spectral range of the generated terahertz harmonics.

For the Fe-As bonds, the Einstein temperatures are identical for the doped (11%) and undoped samples, but the doped sample is found to have a lower level of static disorder. For the Fe-Fe correlation, do** enhances the effective Einstein temperature of Fe-Fe atom correlation. The results suggest that the onset of superconductivity in the F doped system may be related to enhanced magnetic correlations. Density functional calculations of the charge density reveal strong bonding between neighboring As ions but metal-like behavior in the Fe layers.

Results of Fe K-, As K-, and La L3-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements on LaO1-xFxFeAs compounds are presented. The Fe K- edge exhibits a chemical shift to lower energy, near edge feature modifications, and pre-edge feature suppression as a result of F substitution for O. The former two changes provide evidence of electron charge transfer to the Fe sites and the latter directly supports the delivery of this charge into the Fe-3d orbitals. The As K- edge measurements show spectral structures typical of compounds with planes of transition-metal tetrahedrally coordinated to p-block elements as is illustrated by comparison to other such materials. The insensitivity of the As-K edge to do**, along with the strong Fe-K do** response, is consistent with band structure calculations showing essentially pure Fe-d character near the Fermi energy in these materials. The energy of the continuum resonance feature above the La-L3 edge is shown to be quantitatively consistent with the reported La-O inter-atomic separation and with other oxide compounds containing rare earth elements.

These results demonstrate that the formal titanium valence is zero in doped sodium alanate and nearly invariant during hydrogen cycling. A qualitative comparison of the edge fine structure suggests that the Ti is present on the surface in the form of amorphous TiAl3.

Semiconductor superlattices are interesting for two distinct reasons: the possibility to design their structure (band-width(s),do**, etc.) gives access to a large parameter space where different physical phenomena can be explored. Secondly, many important device applications have been proposed, and then subsequently successfully fabricated. A number of theoretical approaches has been used to describe their current-voltage characteristics, such as miniband conduction, Wannier-Stark hop**, and sequential tunneling. The choice of a transport model has often been dictated by pragmatic considerations without paying much attention to the strict domains of validity of the chosen model. In the first part of this paper we review recent efforts to map out these boundaries, using a first-principles quantum transport theory, which encompasses the standard models as special cases. In the second part, focusing in the mini-band regime, we analyze a superlattice device as an element in an electric circuit, and show that its performance as a THz-photon detector allows significant optimization, with respect to geometric and parasitic effects, and detection frequency. The key physical mechanism enhancing the responsivity is the excitation of hybrid Bloch-plasma oscillations.

The current responsivity of a semiconductor superlattice THz-photon detector is calculated using an equivalent circuit model which takes into account the finite matching efficiency between a detector antenna and the superlattice in the presence of parasitic losses. Calculations performed for currently available superlattice diodes show that both the magnitudes and the roll-off frequencies of the responsivity are strongly influenced by an excitation of hybrid plasma-Bloch oscillations which are found to be eigenmodes of the system in the THz- frequency band. The expected room temperature values of the responsivity (2-3 A/W in the 1-3 THz-frequency band) range up to several percents of the quantum efficiency $e/\hbarω$ of an ideal superconductor tunnel junction detector. Properly designed semiconductor superlattice detectors may thus demonstrate better room temperature THz-photon responsivity than conventional Schottky junction devices.
