Almost dispersionless magnetic excitations at $\sim$ 42(6) meV and $\sim$ 35(5) meV have been observed in crystals containing magnetic 3$\mathit{d}$ ions, La$_{2}$CoIrO$_{6}$ and La$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$, respectively. In contrast, this low-energy magnetic excitation is absent in La$_{2}$ZnIrO$_{6}$ in which the 3$\mathit{d}$ ions are non-magnetic, suggesting the importance of 3$\mathit{d}$-5$\mathit{d}$ hybridization in the magnetic properties of these double perovskite iridates. The magnetic excitation is suppressed completely above the magnetic ordering temperature, suggesting the inadequacy of using a simple spin Hamiltonian to describe magnetism of these materials.

We have carried out inelastic neutron scattering experiments to study magnetic excitations in ordered double perovskite Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$. We found a well-defined magnon mode with a bandwidth of $\sim$50meV below the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature ($T_c\sim$520K), similar to previously studied Ba$_2$FeReO$_6$. The spin excitation is gapless for most temperatures within the magnetically ordered phase. However, a spin gap of $\sim$10meV opens up below $\sim$150K, which is well below the magnetic ordering temperature but coincides with a previously reported metal-insulator transition and onset of structural distortion. The observed temperature dependence of spin gap provides strong evidence for ordering of Re orbitals at $\sim$150~K, in accordance with earlier proposal put forward by Oikawa $\it{et.\,al}$ based on neutron diffraction [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn., $\bf{72}$, 1411 (2003)] as well as recent theoretical work by Lee and Marianetti [Phys. Rev. B, $\bf{97}$, 045102 (2018)]. The presence of separate orbital and magnetic ordering in Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$ suggests weak coupling between spin and orbital degrees of freedom and hints towards a sub-dominant role played by spin orbit coupling in describing its magnetism. In addition, we observed only one well-defined magnon band near magnetic zone boundary, which is incompatible with simple ferrimagnetic spin waves arising from Fe and Re local moments, but suggests a strong dam** of Re magnon mode.

Ag$_5$Pb$_2$O$_6$ has attracted considerable attention due to its novel nearly-free-electron superconductivity, but its electronic structure and orbital character of the Cooper-pair electrons remain controversial. Here, we present a method utilizing core-level photoemission to show that Pb 6$s$ electrons dominate near the Fermi level. We observe a strongly asymmetric Pb 4$f_{7/2}$ core-level spectrum, while a Ag 3$d_{5/2}$ spectrum is well explained by two symmetric peaks. The asymmetry in the Pb 4$f_{7/2}$ spectrum originates from the local attractive interaction between conducting Pb 6$s$ electrons and a Pb 4$f_{7/2}$ core hole, which implies a dominant Pb 6$s$ contribution to the metallic conduction. In addition, the observed Pb 4$f_{7/2}$ spectrum is not explained by the well-known Doniach-Šunjić lineshape for a simple metal. The spectrum is successfully generated by employing a Pb 6$s$ partial density of states from local density approximation calculations, thus confirming the Pb 6$s$ dominant character and free-electron-like density of states of Ag$_5$Pb$_2$O$_6$.

We found that for T > TC, initial relaxation proceeds on the time scale of several hundred femtoseconds and corresponds to the redressing of a photoexcited electron to its polaronic ground state. The temperature and dimensionality dependence of this polaron redressing time provides insight into the relationship between polaronic motion and spin dynamics on a sub-picosecond time scale. We also observe a crossover to a more conventional electron-phonon relaxation in the ferromagnetic metallic phase below Tc.

Recently, $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ has attracted much attention as a possible material realization of the honeycomb Kitaev model, which may stabilize a quantum-spin-liquid state. Compared to extensive studies on its magnetic properties, there is still a lack of understanding on its electronic structure, which is strongly related with its Kitaev physics. Here, the electronic structure of $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ is investigated by photoemission (PE) and inverse photoemission (IPE) spectroscopies. The band gap, directly measured from PE/IPE spectra, is found to be 1.9 eV, much larger than previous estimations. The LDA calculations show that the on-site Coulomb interaction $\textit{U}$ can open the band gap without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, the SOC should also be incorporated to reproduce the proper gap size, indicating that the interplay between $\textit{U}$ and SOC plays an essential role in the physics of $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$. There exist some spectral features in PE/IPE spectra which cannot be explained by the LDA calculations. To explain such discrepancies, we perform the configuration-interaction calculations for a ${\textrm{RuCl}}_6^{3-}$ cluster. The experimental data and calculations demonstrate that the 4$\textit{d}$ compound $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ is a $J_{\textrm{eff}}$ = 1/2 Mott insulator rather than a quasimolecular-orbital insulator. Our study also provides important physical parameters, required in verifying the proposed Kitaev physics in $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$.

Both local structures and long-range symmetry are studied using the complementary analyses of atomic pair distribution function (PDF) and Rietveld methods at temperatures 300~K, 250~K, and 200~K. We present that PDF peaks which reflect local atomic arrangements exhibit a noticeable variation below $T_{\rm N}$ without long-range symmetry change. The implication of the PDF evolution is discussed in view of a local structural distortion at the onset of the antiferromagnetic ordering.

We demonstrate a new approach for directly measuring the ultrafast energy transfer between elec- trons and magnons, enabling us to track spin dynamics in an antiferromagnet (AFM). In multiferroic HoMnO3, optical photoexcitation creates hot electrons, after which changes in the spin order are probed with a THz pulse tuned to a magnon resonance. This reveals a photoinduced transparency, which builds up over several picoseconds as the spins heat up due to energy transfer from hot elec- trons via phonons. This spin-lattice thermalization time is ?10 times faster than that of typical ferromagnetic (FM) manganites. We qualitatively explain the fundamental differences in spin-lattice thermalization between FM and AFM systems and apply a Boltzmann equation model for treating AFMs. Our work gives new insight into spin-lattice thermalization in AFMs and demonstrates a new approach for directly monitoring the ultrafast dynamics of spin order in these systems.

The complex structure and magnetism of Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ was investigated by neutron scattering and EXAFS. Pr has an approximate doublet ground-state and the first excited state is a singlet. This overall crystal field level scheme is similar to metallic Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which is also reported here. While the B-site (Ru) is well ordered throughout, this is not the case for the A-site (Pr/Bi). A distribution of the Pr-O2 bond length indicates the Pr environment is not uniform even for $x=0$. The Bi environment is highly disordered ostensibly due to the 6s lone pairs on Bi$^{3+}$. Correspondingly we find the non-Kramers doublet ground state degeneracy otherwise anticipated for Pr in the pyrochlore structure is lifted so as to produce a quadrupolar singlet ground state with a spatially varying energy gap. For $x=0$, below T$_N$, the Ru sublattice orders antiferromagnetically, with propagation vector \textbf{k}= (0,0,0), as for Y$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$. No ordering associated with the Pr sublattice is observed down to 100 mK. The low energy magnetic response of Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ features a broad spectrum of magnetic excitations associated with inhomogeneous splitting of the Pr quasi-doublet ground state. For $x=0$ ($x=0.97$) the spectrum is temperature dependent (independent). It appears disorder associated with Bi alloying enhances the inhomogeneous Pr crystal field level splitting so that inter-site interactions become irrelevant for $x=0.97$. The structural complexity for the A-site may be reflected in the hysteretic uniform magnetization of B-site ruthenium in the Néel phase.

We present the Fermi-surface map of the spin-chiral bulk states for the non-centrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI using de Haas-van Alphen and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. We identify two distinct Fermi surfaces with a unique spindle-torus-type topology and the non-trivial Berry phases, confirming the spin chirality with oppositely circulating spin-texture. Near the quantum limit at high magnetic fields, we find a substantial Zeeman effect with an effective g-factor of ~ 60 for the Rashba-split Fermi surfaces. These findings provide clear evidence of strong Rashba and Zeeman coupling in the bulk states of BiTeI, suggesting that BiTeI is a good platform hosting the spin-polarized chiral states.

Locking of the spin of a quasi-particle to its momentum in split bands of on the surfaces of metals and topological insulators (TIs) is understood in terms of Rashba effect where a free electron in the surface states feels an effective magnetic field. On the other hand, the orbital part of the angular momentum (OAM) is usually neglected. We performed angle resolved photoemission experiments with circularly polarized lights and first principles density functional calculation with spin-orbit coupling on a TI, Bi2Se3, to study the local OAM of the surface states. We show from the results that OAM in the surface states of Bi2Se3 is significant and locked to the electron momentum in opposite direction to the spin, forming chiral OAM states. Our finding opens a new possibility to have strong light-induced spin-polarized current in the surface states.

We report on angle resolved photoemission spectroscopic studies on a parent topological insulator (TI), Bi$_2$Se$_3$. The line width of the spectral function (inverse of the quasi-particle lifetime) of the topological metallic (TM) states shows an anomalous behavior. This behavior can be reasonably accounted for by assuming decay of the quasi-particles predominantly into bulk electronic states through electron-electron interaction and defect scattering. Studies on aged surfaces reveal that topological metallic states are very much unaffected by the potentials created by adsorbed atoms or molecules on the surface, indicating that topological states could be indeed protected against weak perturbations.

Measurements were made on crystals whose surfaces were either non-grounded or short-circuited, and were carried out in magnetic fields up to 9 T and electric fields up to 220 V/cm. In non-grounded crystals we find that the shape of the specific-heat anomaly near $T_C$ is thermally broadened. However, the anomaly changes to the characteristic sharp $λ$-shape expected for a continuous transition with the application of either a magnetic field or an electric field. In crystals whose surfaces were short-circuited with gold, the characteristic $λ$-shape appeared in the absence of an external field. This effect enabled a determination of the critical exponents above and below $T_C$, and may be understood on the basis that the surface charge originating from the pyroelectric coefficient, $dP/dT$, behaves as if shorted by external magnetic or electric fields.

In addition, the temperature dependence of $τ$ below $T_{N}$ is consistent with the opening of a spin gap leading to a quasiparticle recombination bottleneck as revealed by the Rothwarf-Taylor model. This contrasts with canonical heavy fermions such as CeCoIn$_{5}$ where the recombination bottleneck arises from the hybridization gap.

We have studied the crystal and magnetic structures of the magnetoelectric materials RMn2O5 (R = Tb, Ho, Dy) using neutron diffraction as a function of temperature. All three materials display incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering below 40 K, becoming commensurate on further cooling. For R = Tb, Ho, a commensurate-incommensurate transition takes place at low temperatures. The commensurate magnetic structures have been solved and are discussed in terms of competing exchange interactions. The spin configuration within the ab plane is essentially the same for each system, and the radius of R determines the sign of the magnetic exchange between adjacent planes. The inherent magnetic frustration in these materials is lifted by a small lattice distortion, primarily involving shifts of the Mn3+ cations and giving rise to a canted antiferroelectric phase.

The "colossal magnetoresistive" (CMR) manganites are highly correlated systems with a strong coupling between spin, charge, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom, which leads to complex phase diagrams and to the coexistence of various forms of ordering. For example, nanoscale charge/orbital ordering (CO) fluctuations appear to cooperate with Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions of the MnO$_{6} octahedra in CMR manganites and compete with the electron itinerancy favored by double exchange. However, access to the ordered dynamical state has been challenging, mostly due to intrinsic experimental difficulties in measuring fast short-range correlations. Here, we report on a strongly damped low-energy collective mode originating from fast short-range CO fluctuations in La}$_{0.67}Ca$_{0.33}Mn{O}$_{3}(LCMO) single crystal and thin films. We elucidate the collective mode in terms of its dispersion relation and dependence on average A-site ion radius, r$_{A}, and hole-do** concentration. Our results show for the first time that dynamical short-range CO correlations in CMR manganites can be detected with high momentum resolution by coherent ultrafast optical techniques.

We have investigated the magnetic and transport properties of Pr$_{0.65}$Ca$_{0.35}$MnO$_3$ and Pr$_{0.82}$Na$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$ with almost same do** level under various magnetic fields. Upon applying a field of 4 T, both compounds undergo a metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) in the low temperature region. The field-induced FM state is very stable for at least 10$^5$ s even after removing the field. This irreversible FM behavior is different from the spontaneous FM ordering as well as the FM state in a reversible metamagnetic transition. We discuss this unusual FM phenomenon found in the Pr-doped manganites with the AFM ground state in terms of the reorientation of Mn spins pinned by localized Pr moments.

The crystal structure of barium-germanium clathrate Ba6Ge25 was studied using neutron powder diffraction in the temperature range 20-300K. The compound was found to be cubic (S.G. P4_1 23) in the entire temperature range. However, the fully-ordered model of the crystal structure (no split sites) is marginal at room temperature, and clearly fails at low temperature. A much better description of the crystal structure below 250K is given in terms of two split Ba sites, with random occupancies, for two out of three types of cages present in the Ba6Ge25 structure. The Ba atoms were found to interact strongly with the Ge host. The separation of the split Ba sites grows with decreasing temperature, with a sudden increase on cooling through the 200-250K temperature range, accompanied by an expansion of the entire crystal structure. We propose a simple model for this transition, based on temperature-induced de- trap** of Ba from a deep double-well potential. This transition is associated with sizeable anomalies in the transport and magnetic properties. The most significant of these effects, that is, the drop in electrical conductivity on cooling, can be easily explained within our model through the enhanced structural disorder, which would affect the relaxation time for all portions of the Fermi surface. We suggest that the other anomalies (increase in the absolute value of the negative Seebeck coefficient, decrease in the magnetic susceptibility) can be explained within the framework of the one-electron semi- classical model, without any need to invoke exotic electron-electron interaction mechanisms.

A symmetry allowed on-site Mn $d$-$d$ transition near 1.7 eV is observed to blue shift (~0.1 eV) in the antiferromagnetic state due to Mn-Mn superexchange interactions. Similar anomalies are observed in the temperature dependence of the TO phonon frequencies which arise from spin-phonon interaction. We find that the known anomaly in temperature dependence of the quasi-static dielectric constant epsilon_0 below the T_N ~90 K is overwhelmingly dominated by the phonon contributions.

The magnetic susceptibility and spin-spin correlation of the double-exchange model for doped manganites are investigated through the Monte Carlo calculations on the three-dimensional lattice model. Deviations of the susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss behavior above the ferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_c$ seem to indicate a formation of local ferromagnetic clusters in the vicinity of $T_c$, which is consistent with recent electron paramagnetic resonance experiments for La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$. A further analysis of the spin-spin correlations show the ferromagnetic cluster size to be three-to-four lattice spacings, suggesting that the charge carriers may form magnetic polarons.
