By comparing photoemission spectroscopy with a non-perturbative dynamical mean field theory extension to many-body ab initio calculations, we show in the prominent case of pentacene crystals that an excellent agreement with experiment for the bandwidth, dispersion and lifetime of the hole carrier bands can be achieved in organic semiconductors provided that one properly accounts for the coupling to molecular vibrational modes and the presence of disorder. Our findings rationalize the growing experimental evidence that even the best band structure theories based on a many-body treatment of electronic interactions cannot reproduce the experimental photoemission data in this important class of materials.

Part of the experimental Fermi surface is suppressed due to the interference of photoelectrons emitted from the two equivalent carbon atoms per unit cell of graphene's honeycomb lattice. Here we show that by rotating the polarization vector, we are able to illuminate this 'dark corridor' indicating that the present theoretical understanding is oversimplified. Our measurements are supported by first-principles photoemission calculations, which reveal that the observed effect persists in the low photon energy regime.

From omega_E it is inferred that dominant contributions to the e-p effects observed in ARPES come from intermolecular vibrations. Based on the experimental data for lambda we extract an effective Peierls coupling value of g_eff = 0.55. The e-p coupling narrows the HOMO band width by 15 +/- 8% between 75K and 300K.

The band dispersion of the two highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-derived bands in thin crystalline Pentacene films grown on Bi(001) was determined by photoemission spectroscopy. Compared to first-principles calculations our data show a significantly smaller band width and a much larger band separation indicating that the molecular interactions are weaker than predicted by theory--a direct contradiction to previous reports by Kakuta et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 247601 (2007)]. The effective hole mass m* at M-bar is found to be anisotropic and larger than theoretically predicted. Comparison of m* to field effect mobility measurements shows that the band structure has a strong influence on the mobility even at room temperature where we estimate the scattering rate to be tau ~3 fs.

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements in a 4eV wide range below the Fermi level explored the coexistence of weakly correlated a_1g wide-band and strongly correlated e_g narrow-band d-electrons that is responsible for the complicated behavior of this material. In a recent comment [1], Armitage and Hu have suggested that our experiment observing dichroism in angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) [2] could not be conclusively interpreted as arising from time reversal symmetry breaking, arguing that our observations are likely due to structural effects. The concerns expressed by Armitage and Hu that our results could be due to a change in the mirror plane are as important as they are obvious. In fact the first part of their comment merely restates the results of Simon and Varma [3] about the relationship and contrast of effects due to time reversal symmetry breaking and those caused by crystallographic changes. In any test of time reversal symmetry one must ensure that parity alone is not inducing the observed changes. We have indeed considered this issue very carefully in the course of our study [2] and it is precisely the lack of temperature dependent structural changes significant enough to explain the magnitude of the observed dichroism that forced us to conclude that time reversal symmetry breaking is the only plausible explanation. Furthermore, recent experiments by Borisenko, et al. [4] confirm that changes in the mirror plane are unmeasurably small.

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data show that a metal-insulator Mott transition occurs at the surface of the quasi-two dimensional compound TaSe$_2$. The transition is driven by the narrowing of the Ta $5d$ band induced by a temperature-dependent modulation of the atomic positions. A dynamical mean-field theory calculation of the spectral function of the half-filled Hubbard model captures the main qualitative feature of the data, namely the rapid transfer of spectral weight from the observed quasiparticle peak at the Fermi surface to the Hubbard bands, as the correlation gap opens up.

By measurements above TC the Fermi surface topology defined by the Fermi level crossings of the CuO2-derived band was determined. A hole-like Fermi surface as for single and double-CuO2 layered Bi-based cuprates is found, giving new input to the current debate of the general Fermi surface topology of the high Tc superconductors. Furthermore, we present measurements of the superconducting gap of Bi-2223 and show that there are clear indications for a strong anisotropy of the superconducting gap. The universal properties of this phase in comparison to the other Bi-based cuprates will be discussed.

Abstract:
In contrast to our recent finding of an X-point band gap in divalent hexaborides, we report here that angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data shows that the gap is absent for trivalent LaB$_6$ and is absent or nearly so for mixed valent SmB$_6$. This finding demonstrates a nontrivial evolution of the band structure from divalent to trivalent hexaborides.

PRB 63, R100504 (2001). Here we treat the momentum dependence and lineshape of the split band by photoemission in the EDC-mode with very high angular and energy resolution. The splitting into two destinct emissions could also be observed over a large portion of the major symmetry line $Γ$M, giving the dispersion for the individual contributions. Since bi-layer effects can not be present in this single-layer material the results have to be discussed in the context of one-particle removal spectral functions derived from current theoretical models. The most prominent are microscopic phase separation including striped phase formation, coexisting antiferromagnetic and incommensurate charge-density-wave critical fluctuations coupled to electrons (hot spots) or even spin charge separation within the Luttinger liquid picture, all leading to non-Fermi liquid like behavior in the normal state and having severe consequences on the way the superconducting state forms. Especially the possibilty of observing spinon and holon excitations is discussed.

Quasi-low-dimensional (quasi-low-D) inorganic materials are not only ideally suited for angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) but also they offer a rich ground for studying key concepts for the emerging paradigm of non-Fermi liquid (non-FL) physics. In this article, we discuss the ARPES technique applied to three quasi-low-D inorganic metals: a paradigm Fermi liquid (FL) material TiTe$_{2}$, a well-known quasi-1D charge density wave (CDW) material K$_{0.3}$MoO$_{3}$ and a quasi-1D non-CDW material Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_{6}$O$_{17}$. With TiTe$_2$, we establish that a many body theoretical interpretation of the ARPES line shape is possible. We also address the fundamental question of how to accurately determine the {\bf k}$_F$ value from ARPES. Both K$_{0.3}$MoO$_{3}$ and Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_{6}$O$_{17}$ show quasi-1D electronic structures with non-FL line shapes. A CDW gap opening is observed for K$_{0.3}$MoO$_{3}$, whereas no gap is observed for Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_{6}$O$_{17}$. We show, however, that the standard CDW theory, even with strong fluctuations, is not sufficient to describe the non-FL line shapes of K$_{0.3}$MoO$_{3}$. We argue that a Luttinger liquid (LL) model is relevant for both bronzes, but also point out difficulties encountered in comparing data with theory. We interpret this situation to mean that a more complete and realistic theory is necessary to understand these data.

Recent improvements in momentum resolution by a factor of 32 lead to qualitatively new ARPES results on the spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) along the (pi,pi) direction, where there is a node in the superconducting gap. With improved resolution, we now see the intrinsic lineshape, which indicates the presence of true quasiparticles at the Fermi momentum in the superconducting state, and lack thereof in the normal state. The region of momentum space probed here is relevant for charge transport, motivating a comparison of our results to conductivity measurements by infrared reflectivity.
