Optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) is a useful technique for studying interactions between local spins (magnetic ions) and carrier gas. We present the ODMR study of single (Cd,Mn)Te/(Cd,Mg)Te quantum wells (QWs) with the hole gas. We observe different characteristics of the ODMR signals obtained simultaneously using the optical signals of neutral and positively charged exciton. From that, we infer an existence of local fluctuations of carrier gas density resulting in separate populations of Mn$^{2+}$ ions. At the same time, the shape of the ODMR signal contains information about the temperature of the magnetic ions involved in the absorption of the MW. Studying it in detail provides even more information about the interactions with charge carriers. In the QW, two separate ensembles of ions are thermalized differently in the presence of carriers.

This study examines the spin-lattice relaxation rate of Mn$^{2+}$ ions in strained diluted magnetic semiconductor (Cd,Mn)Te/(Cd,Mg)Te quantum wells using the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) technique. By adjusting the magnesium (Mg) content in the buffer layer, we created samples with different strain levels. Our time-resolved ODMR results show that the spin-lattice relaxation time becomes faster as strain increases. We also found that the relaxation rate increases with both magnetic field and temperature, showing a power-law behavior. To understand these observations, we used a theoretical model based on six-level rate equations with non-equal level separations. This model suggests that the main factor affecting relaxation in our samples is a "direct" mechanism. The model's predictions match well with our experimental data. Overall, our findings give insights into spin-lattice relaxation in strained quantum wells and could be important for the development of future quantum and spintronic devices.

Here we utilize selective Mn-do** to additionally enhance the inherent locality of the ODMR technique. We present the time-resolved ODMR studies of single {(Cd,Mg)Te/(Cd,Mn)Te} quantum wells (QWs) with manganese ions located at different positions along the growth axis -- in the center or on the sides of the quantum well. We observe that spin-lattice relaxation of Mn$^{2+}$ significantly depends on the ion-carrier wavefunction overlap at low-magnetic fields. Interestingly, the effect is clearly observed in spite of very low carrier density, which suggests the potential for control of the Mn$^{2+}$ ion relaxation rate by means of the electric field in future experiments.

In this paper, we apply the angle-resolved Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) technique to study series of strained (Cd, Mn)Te/(Cd, Mg)Te quantum wells (QWs) produced by molecular beam epitaxy. By analyzing characteristic features of ODMR angular scans, we determine strain-induced axial-symmetry spin Hamiltonian parameter D with neV precision. Furthermore, we use low-temperature optical reflectivity measurements and X-ray diffraction scans to evaluate the local strain present in QW material. In our analysis, we take into account different thermal expansion coefficients of GaAs substrate and CdTe buffer. The additional deformation due to the thermal expansion effects has the same magnitude as deformation origination from the different compositions of the samples. Based on the evaluated deformations and values of strain-induced axial-symmetry spin Hamiltonian parameter D, we find strain spin-lattice coefficient G11 = (72.2 +- 1.9) neV for Mn2+ in CdTe and shear deformation potential b = (-0.94 +- 0.11) eV for CdTe.

Multi-level exciton-polariton systems offer an attractive platform for studies of non-linear optical phenomena. However, studies of such consequential non-linear phenomena as polariton condensation and lasing in planar microcavities have so far been limited to two-level systems, where the condensation takes place in the lowest attainable state. Here, we report non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons and low threshold, dual-wavelength polariton lasing in vertically coupled, double planar microcavities. Moreover, we find that the presence of the non-resonantly driven condensate triggers interbranch exciton-polariton transfer in the form of energy-degenerate parametric scattering. Such an effect has so far been observed only under excitation that is strictly resonant in terms of the energy and incidence angle. We describe theoretically our time-integrated and time-resolved photoluminescence investigations by a set of rate equations involving an open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our platform's inherent tunability is promising for construction of planar lattices, enabling three-dimensional polariton hop** and realization of photonic devices, such as two-qubit polariton-based logic gates.

Coupling of quantum emitters in a semiconductor relies, generally, on short-range dipole-dipole or electronic exchange type interactions. Consistently, energy transfer between exciton states, that is, electron-hole pairs bound by Coulomb interaction, is limited to distances of the order of 10~nm. Here, we demonstrate polariton-mediated coupling and energy transfer between excitonic states over a distance exceeding 2~$μ$m. We accomplish this by coupling quantum well-confined excitons through the delocalized mode of two coupled optical microcavities. Use of magnetically doped quantum wells enables us to tune the confined exciton energy by the magnetic field and in this way to control the spatial direction of the transfer. Such controlled, long-distance interaction between coherently coupled quantum emitters opens possibilities of a scalable implementation of quantum networks and quantum simulators based on solid-state, multi-cavity systems.

Here, we present double, vertically coupled, ZnTe optical microcavities in planar and 3-D photonic molecule geometry. We design the structures with the help of transfer matrix method calculations and we establish their fabrication technology by molecular beam epitaxy. We characterize the samples by reflectivity spatial map** and study them by measurements of angle-integrated and angle-resolved photoluminescence and reflectivity. We efficiently tailor the interaction strength of the cavities optical modes by an adjustment of the spatial separation between the microcavities, their thickness ratio and by the size of micropillars etched out of the planar structure. Coupling constants extracted from our measurements agree well with those determined in calculations in the frame of a tight-binding approach applied to one-dimensional photonic structures.

Experimental evidences of this effect have been given in previous studies, however direct measurement of the strain induced zero-field splitting has been inaccessible so far. Here this splitting is determined thanks to magneto-optical studies of individual Co$^{2+}$ ion in epitaxial CdTe quantum dot in ZnTe barrier. Using partially allowed optical transitions we measure strain induced zero-field splitting of Co$^{2+}$ ion directly on excitonic photoluminescence spectrum. Moreover, by observation of anticrossing of $S_z = + 3/2$ and $S_z = - 1/2$ Co$^{2+}$ spin states in magnetic field, we determine axial and in-plane components of crystal field acting on Co$^{2+}$. Proposed technique can be applied for optical determination of zero-field splitting of other transition metal ions in quantum dots.

We design, grow and study individual Cd(Se,Te)/ZnSe QDs of low spectral density of emission lines achieved by implementation of a Mn-assisted epitaxial growth. We find an unusually large variation of exciton-biexciton energy difference (3 meV $\leq$ $Δ\mathrm{E_{X-XX}}$ $\leq$ 26 meV) and of exciton radiative recombination rate in the statistics of QDs. We observe a strong correlation between the exciton-biexciton energy difference, exciton recombination rate, splitting between dark and bright exciton, and additionally the exciton fine structure splitting $δ_1$ and Landé factor. Above results indicate that values of the $δ_1$ and of the Landé factor in the studied QDs are dictated primarily by the electron and hole respective spatial shift and wavefunctions overlap, which vary from dot to dot due to a different degree of localization of electrons and holes in, respectively, CdSe and CdTe rich QD regions.

We investigate spin properties of a Fe2+ dopant, known for having single nondegenerate ground state in bulk host semiconductor. Due to zero magnetic moment such a ground state is of little use for spintronics and solotronics. We show that this well-established picture of Fe2+ spin configuration can be contradicted by subjecting the Fe2+ ion to sufficiently high strain, e.g., resulting from lattice mismatched epitaxial heterostructures. Our analysis reveals that high strain induces qualitative change in the ion energy spectrum and results in doubly degenerate ground state with spin projection Sz=+/-2. An experimental proof of this concept is demonstrated using a new system: an epitaxial quantum dot containing individual Fe2+ ion. Magnetic character of the Fe2+ ground state in a CdSe/ZnSe dot is revealed in photoluminescence experiments by exploiting a coupling between a confined exciton and the single iron impurity.

The influence of a distributed Bragg reflector composed of ZnTe, MgTe, and MgSe superlattices on photoluminescence of self assembled CdTe quantum dots (QD) emitting in the yellow spectral range is investigated. In the case of QDs grown on a distributed Bragg reflector the photoluminescence intensity is enhanced by more than one order of magnitude, whereas the single QD lines are broadened as compared to the case of QDs grown on a ZnTe buffer. Structural and chemical analysis reveal an unintentional formation of a thin ZnSe layer induced by the growth interruption needed for the deposition of the QDs sheet. Sharp emission lines from individual quantum dots are recovered in the case of a thicker ZnTe layer grown prior to the QDs. This indicates that growth interruptions might be responsible for the QD emission line broadening.

Circularly polarized optical excitation is used to demonstrate the efficient injection of spin-polarized excitons to individual self-assembled CdSe quantum dots in ZnSe barrier. The exciton spin-transfer is studied by means of polarization-resolved single dot spectroscopy performed in magnetic field applied in Faraday configuration. Detailed analysis of the neutral exciton photoluminescence spectra reveals the presence of exciton spin relaxation during its lifetime in a quantum dot. This process is seen for both nonmagnetic dots and those containing single Mn$^{2+}$ ions. Taking this into account we determine the spin-polarization degree of excitons injected to a dot under circularly polarized below-the-barrier optical excitation at 488 nm. It is found to be close to 40% in the entire range of the applied magnetic field. Exploiting the established spin-conserving excitation channel we demonstrate the optical spin orientation of a single Mn$^{2+}$ ion embedded in a CdSe/ZnSe quantum dot.

We demonstrate the identification method of spontaneously coupled quantum dots pairs containing single Mn2+ ions. It is shown that the Mn2+ ion might be present in the absorbing, emitting or both quantum dots. The magnetic properties of the Mn2+ spin are revealed by a characteristic sixfold splitting of the excitonic line. The statistics of the value of this splitting is analyzed for the large number of the dots and gives the information on the maximum density of the neutral exciton wave function.

Solotronics, optoelectronics based on solitary dopants, is an emerging field of research and technology reaching the ultimate limit of miniaturization. It aims at exploiting quantum properties of individual ions or defects embedded in a semiconductor matrix. As already shown, optical control of a spin of a magnetic ion is feasible employing photo-generated carriers confined in a quantum dot. A non-radiative recombination, regarded as a severe problem, limited development of quantum dots with magnetic ions. Our photoluminescence studies on, so far unexplored, individual CdTe dots with single cobalt ions and individual CdSe dots with single manganese ions show, however, that even if energetically allowed, the single ion related non-radiative recombination is negligible in such zero-dimensional structures. This opens solotronics for a wide range of even not yet considered systems. Basing on the results of our single spin relaxation experiments and on the material trends, we identify optimal magnetic ion-quantum dot systems for implementation of a single-ion based spin memory.

Previous studies of such samples demonstrated that magnetization consists of a paramagnetic contribution due to substitutional diluted Fe ions as well as of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components originating from Fe-rich nanocrystals, whose relative abundance can be controlled by the grow conditions. The nanocrystals are found to broaden and to reduce the magnitude of the excitonic features. However, the ferromagnetic contribution, clearly seen in SQUID magnetometry, is not revealed by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). Possible reasons for differences in magnetic response determined by MCD and SQUID measurements are discussed.

The question of the correlation between magnetization, band splittings, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the fundamental gap region of dilute magnetic semiconductors is examined experimentally and theoretically taking the case of wurtzite Ga(1-x)FexN as an example. Magnetization and polarization-resolved reflectivity measurements have been performed down to 2K and up to 7T for x = 0.2%. Optical transitions originating from all three free excitons A, B and C, specific to the wurtzite structure, have been observed and their evolution with the magnetic field determined. It is demonstrated that the magnitude of the exciton splittings evaluated from reflectivity-MCD data can be overestimated by more than a factor of 2, as compared to the values obtained by describing the polarization-resolved reflectivity spectra with appropriate dielectric functions. A series of model calculations shows that the quantitative inaccuracy of MCD originates from a substantial influence of the magnetization-dependent exchange interactions not only on the spin splittings of excitons but also upon their linewidth and oscillator strength. At the same time, a method is proposed that allows to evaluate the field and temperature dependencies of the magnetization from MCD spectra. The accurate values of the excitonic splittings and of the magnetization reported here substantiate the magnitudes of the apparent $sp-d$ exchange integrals in (Ga,Fe)N previously determined.

We present an experimental study of electron-electron exchange interaction in self-assembled CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots based on the photoluminescence measurements. The character and strength of this interaction are obtained by simultaneous observation of various recombination channels of a doubly negatively charged exciton, including previously unrecognized emission lines related to the electron-singlet configuration in the final state. A typical value of the electron singlet-triplet splitting, which corresponds to the exchange integral of electron-electron interaction, has been determined as 20.4 meV with a spread of 1.4 meV across the wide population of quantum dots. We also evidence an unexpected decrease of energy difference between the singlet and triplet states under a magnetic field in Faraday geometry.

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies of photoluminescence of single CdMnTe quantum dots with Mn content x ranging from 0.01 to 0.2. We distinguish three stages of the equilibration of the exciton-Mn ion spin system and show that the intermediate stage, in which the exciton spin is relaxed, while the total equilibrium is not attained, gives rise to a specific asymmetric shape of the photoluminescence spectrum. From an excellent agreement between the measured and calculated spectra we are able to evaluate the exciton localization volume, number of paramagnetic Mn ions, and their temperature for each particular dot. We discuss the values of these parameters and compare them with results of other experiments. Furthermore, we analyze the dependence of average Zeeman shifts and transition linewidths on the Mn content and point out specific processes, which control these values at particular Mn concentrations.

Two approaches are discussed: increasing the deposition temperature of CdTe and the reduction of CdTe layer thickness. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements at low temperature confirms that both methods can be used for significant reduction of QDs density from 10$^{10}$QD/cm$^2$ to 10$^7$-10$^8$QD/cm$^2$. For very low QDs density, identification of all QDs lines observed in the spectrum is possible.

We demonstrate evidence for a radiative recombination channel of dark excitons in self-assembled quantum dots. This channel is due to a light hole admixture in the excitonic ground state. Its presence was experimentally confirmed by a direct observation of the dark exciton photoluminescence from a cleaved edge of the sample. The polarization resolved measurements revealed that a photon created from the dark exciton recombination is emitted only in the direction perpendicular to the growth axis. Strong correlation between the dark exciton lifetime and the in-plane hole g-factor enabled us to show that the radiative recombination is a dominant decay channel of the dark excitons in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots.

This work presents results of near-band gap magnetooptical studies on (Zn,Mn)O epitaxial layers. We observe excitonic transitions in reflectivity and photoluminescence, that shift towards higher energies when the Mn concentration increases and split nonlinearly under the magnetic field. Excitonic shifts are determined by the s,p-d exchange coupling to magnetic ions, by the electron-hole s-p exchange, and the spin-orbit interactions. A quantitative description of the magnetoreflectivity findings indicates that the free excitons A and B are associated with the Gamma_7 and Gamma_9 valence bands, respectively, the order reversed as compared to wurtzite GaN. Furthermore, our results show that the magnitude of the giant exciton splittings, specific to dilute magnetic semiconductors, is unusual: the magnetoreflectivity data is described by an effective exchange energy N_0(beta-alpha)=+0.2+/-0.1 eV, what points to small and positive N_0 beta. It is shown that both the increase of the gap with x and the small positive value of the exchange energy N_0 beta corroborate recent theory describing the exchange splitting of the valence band in a non-perturbative way, suitable for the case of a strong p-d hybridization.

We study the formation dynamics of a spontaneous ferromagnetic order in single self-assembled CdMnTe quantum dots. By measuring time-resolved photoluminescence, we determine the formation times for QDs with Mn ion contents x varying from 0.01 to 0.2. At low x these times are orders of magnitude longer than exciton spin relaxation times evaluated from the decay of photoluminescence circular polarization. This allows us to conclude that the direction of the spontaneous magnetization is determined by a momentary Mn spin fluctuation rather than resulting from an optical orientation. At higher x, the formation times are of the same order of magnitude as found in previous studies on higher dimensional systems. We also find that the exciton spin relaxation accelerates with increasing Mn concentration.

Near band-gap photoluminescence and reflectivity in magnetic field are employed to determine the exchange-induced splitting of free exciton states in paramagnetic wurtzite Ga1-xMnxN, x < 1%, grown on sapphire substrates by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. The band gap is found to increase with x. The giant Zeeman splitting of all three excitons A, B and C is resolved, enabling the determination of the apparent exchange integrals N0alpha(app) = 0.0 +/- 0.1 eV and N0beta(app) = +0.8 +/- 0.2 eV. These non-standard values and signs of the s - d and p - d exchange energies are explained in terms of recent theories that suggest a contribution of the electron-hole exchange to the spin splitting of the conduction band and a renormalization of the free hole spin-splitting by a large p - d hybridization. According to these models, in the limit of a strong p - d coupling, the band gap of (Ga,Mn)N increases with x and the order of hole spin subbands is reversed, as observed.

A fast relaxation ($\sim 50$ fs) of the carriers after the initial effect of phase space filling followed by a slower relaxation ($\sim 4$ ps) due to thermalization. Both relaxation processes are less efficient when a magnetic field is applied at low temperatures which is attributed to the suppression of the electron-electron Auger scattering due to the non equidistant Landau level spacing of the Dirac fermions in graphene.

Optical writing of information in the spin state of the Mn ion has been demonstrated, using orientation of the Mn spin by spin-polarized carriers transferred from the neighbor quantum dot. Mn spin orientation time values from 20 ns to 100 ns were measured, depending on the excitation power. Storage time of the information in the Mn spin was found to be enhanced by application of a static magnetic field of 1 T, reaching hundreds of microseconds in the dark. Simple rate equation models were found to describe correctly static and dynamical properties of the system.

Photoluminescence excitation (PLE), second order photon correlation and optical orientation were used as main experimental tools. Each individual absorbing dot was identified by a sharp PLE resonance, assigned to neutral exciton transition, while the corresponding emission contained several excitonic transitions of different charge states in another single quantum dot different from the absorbing one. Energy and spin transfer dynamics were studied. A high efficiency of spin transfer was found from optical orientation in a vertical magnetic field (70%) as well as without the magnetic field (40%), in spite of a significant anisotropic exchange splitting of the absorbing dot. Coherent mechanism of linear-to-circular polarization conversion was identified, with an efficiency (43%) close to the theoretical limit of 50%.

Spin dynamics of a single electron and an exciton confined in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot is investigated by polarization-resolved correlation spectroscopy. Spin memory effects extending over at least a few tens of nanoseconds have been directly observed in magnetic field and described quantitatively in terms of a simple rate equation model. We demonstrate an effective (68%) all-optical read-out of the single carrier spin state through probing the degree of circular polarization of exciton emission after capture of an oppositely charged carrier. The perturbation introduced by the pulsed optical excitation serving to study the spin dynamics has been found to be the main source of the polarization loss in the read-out process. In the limit of low laser power the read-out efficiency extrapolates to a value close to 100%. The measurements allowed us as well to determine neutral exciton spin relaxation time ranging from 3.4 +/- 0.1 ns at B = 0 T to 16 +/- 3 ns at B = 5 T.

Using an excitonic model, we determine the difference of exchange integrals between Mn^3+ and free carriers in GaN, N_0(alpha-beta)=-1.2 +/- 0.2 eV. Assuming a reasonable value of alpha, this implies a positive sign of beta which corresponds to a rarely observed ferromagnetic interaction between the magnetic ions and the holes.

We find that the excitonic fine structure strongly depends on the magnitude and direction of applied field. The splitting between "bright" and "dark" states increases with the magnetic field, whereas the anisotropic exchange splitting of the bright excitons can be reduced or enhanced, depending on the field direction. Increase (decrease) is observed when the field is applied parallel to the PL polarization direction of the lower (upper) energy exciton. For intermediate fields, we observe a rotation of the PL polarization orientation. The results are discussed in terms of an effective spin Hamiltonian derived for the exciton ground state.

The far-infrared dielectric response of superlattices (SL) composed of superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO) and ferromagnetic La$_{0.67}$% Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) has been investigated by ellipsometry. A drastic decrease of the free carrier response is observed which involves an unusually large length scale of d$^{crit}\approx $20 nm in YBCO and d$^{crit}\approx $10 nm in LCMO. A corresponding suppression of metallicity is not observed in SLs where LCMO is replaced by the paramagnetic metal LaNiO$_{3}$. Our data suggest that either a long range charge transfer from the YBCO to the LCMO layers or alternatively a strong coupling of the charge carriers to the different and competitive kind of magnetic correlations in the LCMO and YBCO layers are at the heart of the observed metal/insulator transition. The low free carrier response observed in the far-infrared dielectric response of the magnetic superconductor RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is possibly related to this effect.

The free carrier response and the collective modes exhibit a pronounced a-b anisotropy. We discuss our results in terms of a CDW state in the 1-d CuO chains and induced charge density fluctuations within the 2-d CuO$_{2}$ planes.

We review some previous studies concerning the intra-bilayer Josephson plasmons and present new ellipsometric data of the c-axis infrared response of almost optimally doped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}. The c-axis conductivity of this compound exhibits the same kind of anomalies as that of underdoped YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta}. We analyze these anomalies in detail and show that they can be explained within a model involving the intra-bilayer Josephson effect and variations of the electric field inside the unit cell. The Josephson coupling energies of different bilayer compounds obtained from the optical data are compared with the condensation energies and it is shown that there is a reasonable agreement between the values of the two quantities. We argue that the Josephson coupling energy, as determined by the frequency of the intra-bilayer Josephson plasmon, represents a reasonable estimate of the change of the effective c-axis kinetic energy upon entering the superconducting state. It is further explained that this is not the case for the estimate based on the use of the simplest ``tight-binding'' sum rule. We discuss possible interpretations of the remarkable agreement between the Josephson coupling energies and the condensation energies. The most plausible interpretation is that the interlayer tunneling of the Cooper pairs provides the dominant contribution to the condensation energy of the bilayer compounds; in other words that the condensation energy of these compounds can be accounted for by the interlayer tunneling theory. We suggest an extension of this theory, which may also explain the high values of T_{c} in the single layer compounds Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6} and HgBa_{2}CuO_{4}, and we make several experimentally verifiable predictions.

We find that n_{s}^{o} exhibits a pronounced peak at a unique do** state in the slightly overdoped regime. Its position coincides with the critical do** state where the normal state pseudogap first appears depleting the electronic density of states. A surprising correlation between n_{s}^{o} and the condensation energy U_{o} is observed which suggests unconventional behavior even in the overdoped region.

We find that the c-axis response exhibits spectral features similar to deoxygenated underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$, i.e., a pseudogap develops in the normal state, the phonon mode at 320 cm$^{-1}$ exhibits an anomalous T-dependence and an additional absorption peak forms at T. This suggests that the T$_{c}$ suppression in flux grown Pr-substituted crystals is caused by a decrease of the hole content and/or by carrier localization rather than by pair breaking.

We have performed ellipsometric measurements of the far-infrared c-axis dielectric response of underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals. Here we report a detailed analysis of the temperature-dependent renormalization of the oxygen bending phonon mode at 320 cm$^{-1}$ and the formation of the additional absorption peak around 400-500 cm$^{-1}$. For a strongly underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$ crystal with T$_{c}$=52 K we find that, in agreement with previous reports based on conventional reflection measurements, the gradual onset of both features occurs well above T$_{c}$ at T*$\sim $150 K. Contrary to some of these reports, however, our data establish that the phonon anomaly and the formation of the additional peak exhibit very pronounced and steep changes right at T$_{c}$. For a less underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.75}$ crystal with T$_{c}$=80 K, the onset temperature of the phonon anomaly almost coincides with T$_{c}$. Also in contrast to some previous reports, we find for both crystals that a sizeable fraction of the spectral weight of the additional absorption peak cannot be accounted for by the spectral-weight loss of the phonon modes but instead arises from a redistribution of the electronic continuum. Our ellipsometric data are consistent with a model where the bilayer cuprate compounds are treated as a superlattice of intra- and inter-bilayer Josephson-junctions.

Abstract:
The spectra of the far-infrared c-axis conductivity of underdoped YBCO crystals exhibit dramatic changes of some of the phonon peaks when going from the normal to the superconducting state. We show that the most striking of these anomalies can be naturally explained by changes of the local fields acting on the ions arising from the onset of inter- and intra-bilayer Josephson effects.

The first transition is well known and related to the irreversibility line (IL). The second one is located below the IL and has not been previously observed. It occurs for all three sets of crystals and is unrelated to the vortex mobility. Our data are consistent with a two-stage melting scenario where the intra-planar melting of the vortex lattice and the inter-planar decoupling of the vortex lines occur independently.

We have investigated the magnetic and the superconducting properties of the hybrid ruthenate-cuprate compound RuSr_{2}GdCu_{2}O_{8} by means of zero-field muon spin rotation- (ZF-$μ$SR) and DC magnetization measurements. The DC-magnetisation data establish that this material exhibits ferromagnetic order of the Ru-moments ($μ(Ru) \approx 1 μ_{B}$) below T_{Curie} = 133 K and becomes superconducting at a much lower temperature T_c = 16 K. The ZF-$μ$SR experiments indicate that the ferromagnetic phase is homogeneous on a microscopic scale and accounts for most of the sample volume. They also suggest that the magnetic order is not significantly modified at the onset of superconductivity.
