Vortex matter in layered high-$T_c$ superconductors, including iron-pnictides, undergo several thermodynamic phase transitions due to the complex interplay of pinning energy, thermal energy and elastic energy. Moreover, the presence of anisotropy makes their vortex physics even more intriguing. Here, we report a detailed vortex dynamics study, using dc magnetization measurements, in a triclinic iron-pnictide superconductor (Ca$_{0.85}$La$_{0.15}$)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)(Fe$_2$As$_2$)$_5$, with a superconducting transition temperature, T$_c$ $\sim$ 31 K. A second magnetization peak (SMP) feature is observed for magnetic field perpendicular ($H$$\parallel$$c$) and parallel ($H$$\parallel$$ab$) to the crystal plane. However, its fundamental origin is quite different in both directions. For $H$$\parallel$$c$, the SMP can be well explained using an elastic-to-plastic vortex creep crossover, using collective creep theory. In addition, a possible rhombic-to-square vortex lattice phase transition is also observed for fields in between the onset-field and peak-field related to the SMP. On the other hand, for $H$$\parallel$$ab$, a clear signature of an order-disorder vortex phase transition is observed in the isothermal $M$($H$) measurements at $T$ $\geq$ 6 K. The disordered phase exhibits the characteristics of entangled pinned vortex-liquid. We construct a comprehensive vortex phase diagram by displaying characteristic temperatures and magnetic fields for both crystal geometries in this unique superconducting compound. Our study sheds light on the intricate vortex dynamics and pinning in an iron-pnictide superconductor with triclinic symmetry.

We performed magnetization measurements in a single crystal of the anisotropic bilayer pnictide superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$, with $T_c$ $\simeq$ 34 K, for $H$$\parallel$$c$-axis and $H$$\parallel$$ab$-planes. A second magnetization peak (SMP) was observed in the isothermal $M(H)$ curves measured below 16 K for $H$$\parallel$$ab$-planes. A peak in the temperature variation of the critical current density, $J_{c}$($T$), at 16 K, strongly suggests the emergence of Josephson vortices at lower temperatures, which leads to the SMP in the sample. In addition, it is noticed that the appearance of Josephson vortices below 16 K renders easy magnetic flux penetration. A detailed vortex dynamics study suggests that the SMP can be explained in terms of elastic pinning to plastic pinning crossover. Furthermore, contrary to the common understanding, the temperature variation of the first peak field, $H_1$, below and above 16 K, behaves non-monotonically. A highly disordered vortex phase, governed by plastic pinning, has been observed between 17 K and 23 K, within a field region around an extremely large first peak field. Pinning force scaling suggests that the point defects are the dominant source of pinning for $H$ $\parallel$$ab$-planes, whereas, for H $\parallel$$c$-axis, point defects in addition to surface defects are at play. Such disorder contributes to the pinning due to the variation in charge carrier mean free path, $δ$$l$-pinning. Moreover, the large $J_c$ observed in our study is consistent with the literature, which advocates this material for high magnetic field applications.

In this work, we investigate the representative case of the homometallic Co ludwigite Co$^{2+}_2$Co$^{3+}$O$_2$BO$_3$ ($Pbam$ space group) with four distinct Co crystallographic sites [$M1$-$M4$] surrounded by oxygen octahedra. The mixed-valent character of the Co ions up to at least $T=873$ K is verified through x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) experiments. Single crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) confirm that the Co ions at the $M4$ site are much smaller than the others at low temperatures, consistent with a Co$^{3+}$ oxidation state at $M4$ and Co$^{2+}$ at the remaining sites. The size difference between the Co ions in the $M4$ and $M2$ sites is continuously reduced upon warming above $\approx 370$ K, indicating a gradual charge redistribution within the $M4$-$M2$-$M4$ (424) ladder in the average structure. An increasing structural disorder, is noted above $\approx 370$ K, The local Co-O distance distribution, revealed by Co $K$-edge Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) data and analyzed with an evolutionary algorithm method, is similar to that inferred from the XRD crystal structure below $\approx 370$ K. At higher temperatures, the local Co-O distance distribution remains similar to that found at low temperatures, at variance with the average crystal structure obtained with XRD. We conclude that the oxidation states Co$^{2+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ are instantaneously well defined in a local atomic level at all temperatures, however the thermal energy promotes local defects in the charge-ordered configuration of the 424 ladders upon warming. These defects coalesce into a phase-segregated state within a narrow temperature interval ($475< T < 495$ K). Finally, a transition at $\approx 500$ K revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in the iron ludwigite Fe$_3$O$_2$BO$_3$ is discussed.

Here, we report the vortex dynamics study in the single crystal of an electron-doped cuprate Pr$_{0.87}$LaCe$_{0.13}$CuO$_4$ superconductor using dc magnetization measurements. A SMP feature in the isothermal $M(H)$ was observed for $H$$\parallel$$ab$-planes. On the other hand, no such feature was observed for $H$$\parallel$$c$-axis in the crystal. Using magnetic relaxation data, a detailed analysis of activation pinning energy via collective creep theory suggests an elastic to plastic creep crossover across the SMP. Moreover, for $H$$\parallel$$ab$, a peak in the temperature dependence of critical current density is also observed near 7 K, which is likely be related to a dimensional crossover (3D-2D) associated to the emergence of Josephson vortices at low temperatures. The anisotropy parameter obtained $γ$ $\approx$ 8-11 indicates the 3D nature of vortex lattice mainly for $H$$\parallel$$c$-axis. The $H$-$T$ phase diagrams for $H$$\parallel$$c$ and $H$$\parallel$$ab$ are presented.

Ferromagnetic Ni2MnGa-based alloys play an important role in technological fields, such as smart actuators, magnetic refrigeration and robotics. The possibility of obtaining large non-contact deformation induced by an external perturbation is one of its key strengths for applications. However, the search for materials with low cost, practical fabrication procedures and large signal output under small perturbing fields still poses challenges. In the present study we demonstrate that by judicial choice of substitution on the Mn site, an abrupt magnetostructural transition from a paramagnetic austenite phase to a ferromagnetic martensite one can be tuned to close to room temperature achieving large and reproducible strains. The required magnetic field to induce the strain varies from small values, as low as 0.25 T for 297.4 K and 1.6% of strain, to 8 T for 305 K and 2.6% of strain. Our findings point to encouraging possibilities for application of shape memory alloys in relatively inexpensive, scalable polycrystalline materials.

Thermal hysteresis is recognized as one of the main drawbacks for cyclical applications of magnetocaloric and ferromagnetic shape memory materials with first order transformations. As such, the challenge is to develop strategies that improve the compatibility between the phases involved in the transitions and study its influence on thermal hysteresis. With this purpose, we explore the thermal, structural and magnetic properties of the Ni2Mn1-xCuxGa0.84Al0.16 Heusler alloys. The alloys present a thermal hysteresis reduction of ~60% when the Cu content in the compound varies from x = 0.10 to x = 0.25, with a minimum hysteresis width of 6 K being achieved. We applied the geometric non-linear theory of martensite to address the phase compatibility, quantified by the parameter lambda2, the middle eigenvalue of the transformation stretch tensor, and found that the minimum of hysteresis is associated with a better crystallographic compatibility (lambda2 closer to 1) between the austenite and martensite phases. In addition, we show that the valley-like properties of hysteresis found in the Ni2Mn1-xCuxGa0.84Al0.16 compounds is present in several other alloys in the literature. These results provide new pathways to understand as well as to masters the phase compatibility and ultimately achieve a low thermal hysteresis in multifunctional Heusler alloys.

We present magnetization studies as a function of time, temperature and magnetic field for $H$ $\parallel$ c-axis, in a hole-doped pnictide superconductor, La$_{0.34}$Na$_{0.66}$Fe$_2$As$_2$, with, $T_c$ $\approx$ 27 K. The obtained vortex phase-diagram shows that the magnetic irreversibility line is very close to the mean-field superconducting transition line, similar to the low $T_c$ superconductors, evidencing a strong pinning behavior. The irreversibility line does not follow a power law behavior with ($T_c$-$T$), however, it is well described using an expression developed in the literature considering the effect of disorder in the system. The critical current density estimated using the Bean's critical-state model is found to be of the order of 10$^5$ A/cm$^2$ below 12 K in the limit of zero magnetic field. A plot of the normalized pinning force density as a function of the reduced magnetic field at different temperatures shows a good scaling and the analysis suggests that the vortex pinning is due to normal point like pinning centers. The temperature dependence of the critical current density suggests that the pinning due to the variation in charge carrier mean free path alone is not sufficient to explain the experimental data. Magnetic relaxation rate as a function of temperature and magnetic field is also studied.

A series of high quality BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ pnictide superconductors were studied using magnetic relaxation and isothermal magnetic measurements in order to study the second magnetization peak (SMP) and critical current behaviour in Ni-doped 122 family. The temperature dependence of the magnetic relaxation rate suggests a pinning crossover, whereas, it's magnetic field dependence hints a vortex-lattice structural phase-transition. The activation energy ($U$) estimated using the magnetic relaxation data was analyzed in detail for slightly-underdoped, slightly-overdoped and an overdoped samples, using Maley's method and collective creep theory. Our results confirm that the SMP in these samples is due to the collective (elastic) to plastic creep crossover as has been observed for the other members of 122-family. In addition, we also investigated the do** dependence of the critical current density ($J_c$) and the vortex-pinning behaviour in these compounds. The observed $J_c$ is higher than the threshold limit (10$^5$ A/cm$^2$) considered for the technological potential and even greater than 1 MA/cm$^2$ for slightly underdoped Ni-content, x = 0.092 sample. The pinning characteristics were analyzed in terms of the models developed by Dew-Hughes and Griessen $et$ $al$, which suggest the dominant role of $δl$-type pinning.

We examine the evidence for multiband superconductivity and non s-wave pairing in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Nb$_{0.18}$Re$_{0.82}$, using electrical transport, magnetization and specific heat measurements. In the normal state, both the evolution of resistivity with temperature and with magnetic field support a multiband picture. In the superconducting state, the Werthamer, Helfand and Hohenberg (WHH) model cannot adequately describe the temperature dependence of the upper critical field, $H_{c2}(T)$, over the whole temperature range measured. In addition, the observed $H_{c2}(0)$ exceeds the Pauli limit, suggesting non-s-wave pairing. Interestingly, the Kadowaki-Woods ratio and Uemura plot reveal a behavior in Nb$_{0.18}$Re$_{0.82}$ which is similar to that found in unconventional superconductors. The temperature dependence of the lower critical field, $H_{c1}(T)$, follows an anomalous $T^3$ behavior and the derived normalized superfluid density ($ρ_s$) is well explained using a nodeless two-gap description. Phase-fluctuation analysis conducted on the reversible magnetization data, reveals a significant deviation from the mean-field conventional s-wave behavior. This trend is interpreted in terms of a non s-wave spin-triplet component in the pairing symmetry as might be anticipated in a non-centrosymmetric superconductor where anti-symmetric spin-orbit coupling plays a dominant role.

The sample investigated is La0.5Ca0.5MnO3, a prototypical manganite exhibiting phase separation. Two regimes for isothermal relaxation were observed according to the temperature range: for T > 100 K, aging/rejuvenation effects are observed, while for T < 100 K an irreversible aging was found. Our results show that thermal cycles act as a tool to unveil the dynamical behavior of the phase separated state in manganites, revealing the close interplay between static and dynamic properties of phase separated manganites.

The second magnetization peak (SMP) has been observed at temperatures below $T_c$/2 and vanished at higher temperatures. The observed behaviour of the SMP has been studied by measuring the magnetic field dependence of relaxation rate, $R(H)$ and by performing the Maley's analysis. The results suggest that the crossover from collective to plastic pinning observed in the SMP disappears above 12 K with plastic pinning replacing collective pinning. An interesting $H$-$T$ phase diagram is obtained. The critical current density ($J_c$) was estimated using Bean's model and found to be $\sim$ $3.4 \times 10^9$ A/m$^2$ at 10 K in the SMP region, which is comparable to an optimally doped Ba-KFe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor and may be exploited for potential technological applications. The pinning mechanism is found to be unconventional and does not follow the usual $δl$ and $δT_c$ pinning models, which suggest the intrinsic nature of pinning in the compound.

We study the effect of proton irradiation on Ba(Fe$_{0.96}$Co$_{0.04}$)$_2$As$_2$ superconducting single crystals from combined magnetisation and magnetoresistivity measurements. The study allows the extraction of the values of the apparent pinning energy $U_0$ of the samples prior to and after irradiation, as well as comparison of the values of $U_0$ obtained from the flux-flow reversible region with those from the flux-creep irreversible region. Irradiation reduces $T_c$ modestly, but significantly reduces $U_0$ in both regimes: the critical current density $J_c$ is modified, most strikingly by the disappearance of the second magnetisation peak after irradiation. Analysis of the functional form of the pinning force and of the temperature dependence of $J_c$ for zero field, indicates that proton irradiation in this case has not changed the pinning regime, but has introduced a high density of shallow point-like defects. By consideration of a model that takes into account the effect of disorder on the irreversibility line, the data suggests that irradiation produced a considerable reduction in the average effective disorder overall, consistent with the changes observed in $U_0$ and $J_c$.

The monoclinic double-perovskite Sr2YRuO6 has recently gained a renewed interest in order to get a deeper insight into the exotic magnetic ground states associated with geometric frustration. Striking discrepancies between the spin order derived from the neutron diffraction refinements and the macroscopic magnetic and thermal responses is a major challenge that must be addressed. In this work, detailed neutron diffraction measurements as a function of temperature yield a completely different interpretation of the patterns. We show that at low temperatures a spin structure of the K2NiF4-type is an accessible configuration for the magnetic ground state. In the neighborhood of the magnetic transition this configuration evolves into a canted super-structure. The deduced temperature dependence of the canting angle exhibits two closely spaced peaks, which are in excellent agreement with the double peaks in the magnetic contribution to the specific heat and in the thermal expansion coefficient. We explain these features in terms of reorientation of the net ferromagnetic moment of the noncollinear spin state, due to the local breaking of the inversion symmetry promoted by the monoclinic distortions, with structural changes acting as the driving force.

We have performed electrical resistivity and DC magnetization measurements as a function of temperature, on polycrystalline samples of phase separated LaPrCaMnO. We have used the General Effective Medium Theory to obtain theoretical resistivity vs. temperature curves corresponding to different fixed ferromagnetic volume fraction values, assuming that the sample is a mixture of typical metallic like and insulating manganites. By comparing this data with our experimental resistivity curves we have obtained the relative ferromagnetic volume fraction of our sample as a function of temperature. This result matches with the corresponding magnetization data in excellent agreement, showing that a mixed phase scenario is the key element to explain both the magnetic and transport properties in the present compound.

We find that the M-H loops taken from the different field directions can be collapsed onto a single universal curve at all temperatures with a simple scaling factor equivalent to the superconducting anisotropy, showing not only that the vortex pinning is isotropic, three dimensional and most likely related to point like defects. The resulting critical currents however, taken from the Bean model appears to show enhanced low field pinning for H//c. The features in the vortex- dynamics also differ in different field orientations and show no direct correlation with the second magnetization peak Hp as is the case with a direct crossover in pinning regimes. Isofield plots of the scaled activation energy obtained from flux-creep data is found to be a smooth function of temperature as the Hp(T) line is crossed consistent with a single type of pinning regime operating at this field, independent of field orientation. The functional form of the Hp(T) lines in the resulting phase diagrams also support this view.

Flux-creep data was obtained for fields along the second magnetization peak observed in M(H) curves of BaFe{1.9}Ni{0.1}As2 for H||c-axis. H||ab-planes and H forming a 45 degrees angle with ab-planes. The M-H loops from the different field directions can be collapsed onto a universal curve with a scaling factor equivalent to the superconducting anisotropy, showing that the pinning is three dimensional, although with remarkable differences in the vortex-dynamics as a function of field orientation. The resulting relaxation rate, R, when plotted as a function of field and temperature does not show any specific feature in the vicinity of the second magnetization peak field Hp, the relaxation shows a maximum at a field H_2 well above Hp for H||c and a minimum at H^* for fields well below Hp for H||ab$ and H$-45-ab. Isofield plots of the scaled activation energy obtained from flux-creep data at several different temperatures also do not show any evidence of a change in the pinning mechanism as the peak field is crossed. The Hp lines in the resulting phase diagrams do not appear to be consistent with a description-terms of a collective-plastic pinning crossover.

We report a heat dynamics analysis of the electrocaloric effect (ECE) in commercial multilayer capacitors based on BaTiO3 dielectric, a promising candidate for applications as a solid state cooling device. Direct measurements of the time evolution of the sample's temperature changes under different applied voltages allow us to decouple the contributions from Joule heating and from the ECE. Heat balance equations were used to model the thermal coupling between different parts of the system. Fingerprints of Joule heating and the ECE could be resolved at different time scales. We argue that Joule heating and the thermal coupling of the device to the environment must be carefully taken in to account in future developments of refrigeration technologies employing the ECE.

We study the vortex-dynamics of a BaFe{1.82}Ni_{0.18}As_2 crystal with Tc = 8 K, by measuring flux-creep over the second magnetisation (or fish-tail) peak for both H//c-axis and H//ab planes. Magnetic relaxation data show an anomalously long initial stage of relaxation, lasting approximately10 minutes for H//c-axis and 2-3 min for H//ab, resembling a transient effect with a lower relaxation rate, which is followed by the usual log(time) relaxation. Interestingly, study of the relaxation rate R vs H for both stages of relaxation and for both field directions, are featureless over the field range associated with the fish-tail. The same trend was confirmed by plotting R vs T obtained from flux-creep data measured as a function of temperature for a fixed field (H//$c-axis). A plot of the activation energy U(M,T) calculated from the time relaxation of the magnetisation at a fixed field also shows a smooth behavior further supporting the view that the fish-tail peak is not associated with a crossover in vortex pinning regime within the collective pinning scenario.

We present a study of the magnetocaloric effect in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.3) and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 manganites. The low temperature state of both ystems is the result of a competition between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The samples display magnetocaloric effect evidenced in an adiabatic temperature change during a metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase . As additional features, La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 exhibits phase separation characterized by the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 displays inverse magnetocaloric effect in which temperature decreases while applying an external magnetic field. In both cases, a significant part of the magnetocaloric effect appears from non-reversible processes. As the traditional thermodynamic description of the effect usually deals with reversible transitions, we developed an alternative way to calculate the adiabatic temperature change in terms of the change of the relative ferromagnetic fraction induced by magnetic field. To evaluate our model, we performed direct measurement of the sample's adiabatic temperature change by means of a differential thermal analysis. An excellent agreement has been obtained between experimental and calculated data. These results show that metamagnetic transition in manganites play an important role in the study of magnetic refrigeration.

A surface map of the superconducting transition temperature shows that the superconducting properties are close to homogeneous across the sample. Magnetic relaxation data, M(t), was used to obtain the activation energy U(M) in order to study different vortex dynamics regimes. Results of this analysis along with time dependent measurements as a function of field and temperature extended to the reversible region of some M(H) curves demonstrate that the irreversibility as well the second magnetization peak position, $H_p(T)$, are time dependent and controlled by plastic motion of the vortex state. In the region delimited by a characteristic field Hon (well below $H_p$), and $H_p$, the vortex dynamics is controlled by collective pinning. For fields below Hon the activation energy, $U_0$, increases with field as expected for collective pinning, but the pinning mechanism is likely to be in the single vortex limit.

Results obtained for fields above 20 kOe show a well defined rounding effect on the reversible region extending 1-3 K above $T_c(H)$ masking the transition. This rounding appears to be due to three-dimensional critical fluctuations, as the higher field curves obey a well know scaling law for this type of critical fluctuations. We also analysed the asymptotic behavior of $\sqrt M$vs.T curves in the reversible region which probes the shape of the gap near $T_c(H)$. Results of the analysis suggests that phase fluctuations are important in $Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2$ which is consistent with nodes in the gap.

Measurements were made in the isomorphic series (Nb1-xRux)Sr2Eu1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 [(Nb,Ru)-1222], with x between 0 and 1. 3D XY fluctuations above the magnetic transition were not observed in Ru-1222, suggesting a weak inter-plane coupling between the RuO2 layers. The compositional dependence of the magnetic susceptibility shows a rapid broadening with increasing Nb content, explained in terms of a cluster-glass state. The variation of several superconducting parameters as a function of Ru content is linear in the whole concentration range, with no jumps at the critical concentration for which percolation of long range order is expected. 3D Arrhenius and Vogel-Fulcher-type dependencies fail to describe the dynamic properties. Fitting of a generalized Vogel-Fulcher-type dependence, with ln(tau/tau0) = A(T-T0)^-B, yield B = 2.0, in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations for 2D systems. The value deduced for T0 agrees well with the re-opening of hysteresis in the M(H) curves. The observed superconducting and magnetic features are explained in terms of a scenario of 2D magnetic islands at the RuO2 layers, with no long range magnetic order.

We present magnetic and transport measurements on La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 with y = 0.3, a manganite compound exhibiting intrinsic multiphase coexistence of sub-micrometric ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic charge ordered regions. Time relaxation effects between 60 and 120K, and the obtained magnetic and resistive viscosities, unveils the dynamic nature of the phase separated state. An experimental procedure based on the derivative of the time relaxation after the application and removal of a magnetic field enables the determination of the otherwise unreachable equilibrium state of the phase separated system. With this procedure the equilibrium phase fraction for zero field as a function of temperature is obtained. The lower critical field of the grains, $H_{c1}$, and the intragrain critical current density, $J_{c}$, were determined for the superconducting ruthenate-cuprate RuSr$_{2}$Gd$_{1.5}$Ce$_{0.5}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{10-δ}$ [Ru-1222(Gd)] through a systematic study of the hysteresis in magnetoresistance loops. A reliable method, based on the effects of the magnetization of the grains on the net local field at the intergranular junctions is provided, circumventing the problem of the strong masking of the superconducting diamagnetic signal by the ferromagnetic background. The temperature dependency of $H_{c1}$ and $J_{c}$ both exhibit a smooth increase on cooling without saturation down to $T/T_{SC}$ $\cong $ 0.2. The obtained $H_{c1}$ values vary between 150 and 1500 Oe in the 0.2 $\leq $ $% T/T_{SC}$ $\leq $ 0.4 interval, for samples annealed in an oxygen flow; oxygenation under high pressure (50 atm) leads to a further increase. These values are much larger than the previously reported rough assessments (25-50 Oe), using conventional magnetization measurements. High $J_{c}$ values of $% \sim $ 10$^{7}$ A/cm$^{2}$, comparable to the high-T$_{c}$ cuprates, were obtained. The $H_{c1}(T)$ and $J_{c}(T)$ dependencies are explained in the context of a magnetic phase separation scenario.

Through calorimetric measurements on La$_{0.225}$Pr$_{0.40}$Ca$ _{0.375}$MnO$_{3}$ the low temperature free energies of the coexisting ferromagnetic and charge ordered phases are evaluated. The phase separated state is modeled by free energy densities uniformly spread over the sample volume. The calculations contemplate the out of equilibrium features of the coexisting phase regime, to allow a comparison between magnetic measurements and the predictions of the model. Detailed magnetization measurements in La_{5/8-y}Pr_{y}Ca_{3/8} MnO_{3}, including magnetic relaxation properties, demonstrate the dynamic nature of the phase separated state in manganites. The difference between the field-cooled-cooling and zero-field-cooled magnetization curves signals the existence in the latter of blocked metastable states separated by high energy barriers. Results of the magnetic viscosity show that the system becomes unblocked in a certain temperature window, where large relaxation rates are observed. We propose a simple phenomenological model in which the system evolves through a hierarchy of energy barriers, which separates the coexisting phases. The calculated magnetization curves using this model reproduce all the qualitative features of the experimental data. The overall results allowed us to construct an H-T phase diagram, where frozen and dynamical phase separation regions are clearly distinguished.

The intergranular pinning potential U and the critical current density Jc for polycrystalline RuSr2Gd1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 ruthenate-cuprate were determined at zero magnetic field and temperature through the frequency shift in the peak of the imaginary part of the ac magnetic susceptibility, X". A critical state model, including a flux creep term, was found to accurately describe the X" behavior. The obtained values, U(H=0,T=0) ~ 30 meV and Jc(H=0,T=0) ~ 110 A/cm^2 are about two orders of magnitude and four times lower, respectively, in comparison with the high-Tc cuprate YBa2Cu3O7. These results were ascribed to the effects of the Ru magnetization on the connectivity of the weak-linked network, giving an intrinsic local field at the junctions of ~ 15 Oe. The impact on Jc is less intense because of the small average grain radius (~1 micrometer). The intragranular London penetration length at T = 0, [lambda_L(0) ~ 2 micrometer], was derived using a Kim-type expression for the field dependence of Jc. A possible source for the large value of lambda_L in comparison to the high-Tc cuprates is suggested to come from a strong intragrain granularity, due to structural domains of coherent rotated RuO6 octahedra separated by antiphase boundaries.

The activation energy E_{a}(H,T) for flux line depinning was determined by fitting the nonlinear region of the curves using the flux creep model. E_{a}(H,T) was found to vary linearly with temperature, while a power-law dependence on the magnetic field was observed up to H=0.1 T, where an abrupt reduction in its decreasing rate occurs. The extrapolated value, E_{a}(0,0)=50 meV, is twice the reported value for YBa2Cu3O7, but the critical current density J_{C}(0,0)=70 A/cm2 is about one order of magnitude lower. These results are explained as a consequence of the contribution of the magnetization in the grains to the effective field at the intergranular links and to a spin-flop transition of the Ru-sub-lattice.

We have studied the effect of irreversibility induced by repeated thermal cycles on the electric transport and magnetization of polycrystalline samples of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and La0.325Pr0.3Ca0.375MnO3. An increase of the resistivity and a decrease of the magnetization at different temperature ranges after cycling is obtained in the temperature range between 300 K and 30 K. Both compounds are known to exhibit intrinsic submicrometric coexistence of phases and undergo a sequence of phase transitions related to structural changes. Changes induced by thermal cycling can be partially inhibited by applying magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure.
Our results suggest that the growth and coexistence of phases with different structures gives rise to microstructural tracks and strain accommodation, producing the observed irreversibility. Irrespective of the actual ground state of each compound, the effect of thermal cycling is towards an increase of the amount of the insulating phase in both compounds.

The occurrence at low temperatures of an ultrasharp field-induced transition in phase separated manganites is analyzed. Experimental results show that magnetization and specific heat step-like transitions below 5 K are correlated with an abrupt change of the sample temperature, which happens at a certain critical field. This temperature rise, a magnetocaloric effect, is interpreted as produced by the released energy at the transition point, and is the key to understand the existence of the abrupt field-induced transition. A qualitative analysis of the results suggests the existence of a critical growing rate of the ferromagnetic phase, beyond which an avalanche effect is triggered.

Yttrium do** yielded the appearance of a cluster-glass state, giving rise to unusual low-temperature behavior of the specific-heat. The main feature observed in the results is a strong enhancement of the specific-heat linear term, which is interpreted as a direct consequence of magnetic disorder. The analysis was further corroborated by resistivity measurements in the same compounds.

A characterization of the magnetic superconductors RuSr2GdCu2O8 [Ru-(1212)] and RuSr2(Gd1.5Ce0.5)Cu2O10 [Ru-(1222)] through resistance measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field is presented. Two peaks in the derivative of the resistive curves are identified as intra- and intergrain superconducting transitions. Strong intragrain granularity effects are observed, and explained by considering the antiphase boundaries between structural domains of coherently rotated RuO6 octahedra as intragrain Josephson-junctions. A different field dependence of the intragrain transition temperature in these compounds was found. For Ru-(1212) it remains unchanged up to 0.1 T, decreasing for higher fields. In Ru-(1222) it smoothly diminishes with the increase in field even for a value as low as 100 Oe. These results are interpreted as a consequence of a spin-flop transition of the Ru moments. The large separation between the RuO2 layers in Ru-(1222) promotes a weak interlayer coupling, leading the magnetic transition to occur at lower fields. The suppression rate of the intragrain transition temperature is about five times higher for Ru-(1222), a result we relate to an enhancement of the 2D character of the vortex structure. A distinctive difference with conventional cuprates is the sharp increase in amplitude of the intergrain peak in both systems, as the field is raised, which is ascribed to percolation through a fraction of high quality intergrain junctions.

Time dependent effects indicate that the fractions of the coexisting phases are dynamically changing in a definite temperature range. We found that in this range the ferromagnetic fraction f can be easily tuned by application of low magnetic fields (< 1 T). The effect is persistent after the field is turned off, thus the field remains imprinted in the actual value of f and can be recovered through transport measurements. This effect is due both to the existence of a true phase separated equilibrium state with definite equilibrium fraction f0, and to the slow growth dynamics. The fact that the same global features were found on different compounds and in polycrystalline and single crystalline samples, suggests that the effect is a general feature of some phase separated media.

We have measured magnetic and transport response on the polycrystalline La$_{5/8-y}$Pr$_y$Ca$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$ ($y=0.30$, average grain size 2 microns) compound. In the temperature range where ferromagnetic metallic and insulating regions coexist we observed a persistent memory of low magnetic fields ($<$ 1 T) which is determined by the actual amount of the ferromagnetic phase. The possibility to manipulate this fraction with relatively small external perturbations is related to the phase separated nature of these manganese oxide based compounds. The colossal magnetoresistance figures obtained (about 80%) are determined by the fraction enlargement mechanism. Self-shielding of the memory to external fields is found under certain described circumstances. We show that this non-volatile memory has multilevel capability associated with different applied low magnetic field values.

We show here that this new curve is the average kinetic energy of the superconducting state versus the applied field, for type-II superconductors with a high Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$. The maximum of $4 πM \cdot B$ occurs at a field, $H^{*}$, directly related to the upper critical field, $H_{c2}$, suggesting that $H_{c2}(T)$ may be extracted from such plots even in cases when it is too high for direct measurement. We obtain these plots both theoretically, from the Ginzburg-Landau theory, and experimentally, using a Niobium sample with $T_c = 8.5 K$, and compare them.

We present magnetization studies in a series of phase separated La$_{0.5}$Ca$%_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ samples, with different low temperature fractions of the ferromagnetic (FM) and charge ordered-antiferromagnetic (CO-AFM) phases. A particular experimental procedure probes the effect of the magnetic field applied while cooling the samples, which promotes FM fraction enlargement and enhances the melting of the CO phase. The response of the system depending on its magnetic field history indicates the existence of three different regimes in the phase separated state which develops below T$_{C}$. Our data allows us to identify the onset temperature below which the system becomes magnetic and structurally phase separated, and an onset field above which FM fraction enlargement occurs.

They evidence for x >= 0.10 the appearance of a metallic cluster glass phase, that develops just below the ferromagnetic transition temperature. The clusters grow with decreasing temperature down to a temperature T(f0) at which they freeze due to severe intercluster frustration. The formation of these clusters is explained by the presence of yttrium induced local structural distortions that create localized spin disorder in a magnetic lattice where double-exchange ferromagnetism is dominant.

The effect of low magnetic fields on the transport properties of a manganite compound with magnetic phase separation is studied. The different behavior obtained in samples of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 related to the way in which the low field is applied is consistent with a picture of changes in the metallic fraction induced by the magnetic field in a field-cooled cycle. Using a simple model of conduction through a binary mixture, the interrelation between magnetoresistance, metallic fraction and percolation temperature is accounted for. A new physical coefficient relating magnetic field and metallic fraction emerges as the relevant parameter in the description of phase separated manganites.

A systematic study of phase separation effects in polycrystalline La_0.5 Ca_0.5 Mn O_3 obtained under different thermal treatments is reported. Samples with average grain size ranging from 200 to 1300 nm were studied. Magnetic and electrical measurements show quantitative differences among samples in their low temperature behavior. indicating that the fraction of the ferromagnetic (FM) phase gradually decreases as the grain size increase. Percolation of the FM phase in samples with a small fraction of this phase suggests that grain boundaries play a distinctive role in the spatial distribution of coexisting phases. The defective structure at the grain surface could explain the local inhibition of the antiferromagnetic charge ordered phase, an effect that is gradually removed with increasing grain size. Qualitative agreement of the data with this description is found. This effect is also found to be highly dependent on the oxygen content of the samples and its spatial distribution.

For the samples with δ=0.11 and 0.15, magnetic measurements show signatures of a two-step transition: as the temperature is lowered, the system enters a ferromagnetic phase followed by a disorder-induced cluster-glass state. Spin-wave-like contributions and an unexpected large linear term are observed in the specific heat as a function of temperature. In the sample with the highest vacancy content, δ=0.26, the disorder is sufficient to suppress even short-range ferromagnetic order and yield a spin-glass-like state.
