Spin polarization in chiral molecules is a magnetic molecular response associated with electron transport and enantioselective bond polarization that occurs even in the absence of an external magnetic field. An unexpected finding by Santos and co-workers reported enantiospecific NMR responses in solid-state cross-polarization (CP) experiments, suggesting a possible additional contribution to the indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling in chiral molecules induced by bond polarization in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Herein we provide a theoretical treatment for this phenomenon, presenting an effective spin-Hamiltonian for helical molecules like DNA and density functional theory (DFT) results on amino acids that confirm the dependence of J-couplings on the choice of enantiomer. The connection between nuclear spin dynamics and chirality could offer insights for molecular sensing and quantum information sciences. These results establish NMR as a potential tool for chiral discrimination without external agents.

The modeling of conformations and dynamics of (bio)polymers is of primary importance for understanding physicochemical properties of soft matter. Although short-range interactions such as covalent and hydrogen bonding control the local arrangement of polymers, non-covalent interactions play a dominant role in determining the global conformations. Here we focus on how the inclusion of many-body effects in van der Waals dispersion affects the outcome of geometry optimizations and molecular dynamics simulations of model polymers. We find that delocalized force contributions are key to explore the conformational landscape, as they induce an anisotropic polarization response which efficiently guides the conformation towards globally optimized structures. This is in contrast with the commonly used pair-wise approach, where the atomic polarizabilities lack information on the global geometry. We show that such local approximation causes the conformational search to be obstructed by conformations with unphysically limited spatial symmetry, while the many-body formalism strongly reduces the roughness of the potential energy landscape.

L$1_0$ FePt is a technologically important material for a range of novel data storage applications. In the ordered FePt structure the normally non-magnetic Pt ion acquires a magnetic moment, which depends on the local field originating from the neighboring Fe atoms. In this work a model of FePt is constructed, where the induced Pt moment is simulated by using combined longitudinal and rotational spin dynamics. The model is parameterized to include a linear variation of the moment with the exchange field, so that at the Pt site the magnetic moment depends on the Fe ordering. The Curie temperature of FePt is calculated and agrees well with similar models that incorporate the Pt dynamics through an effective Fe-only Hamiltonian. By computing the dynamic correlation function the anisotropy field and the Gilbert dam** are extracted over a range of temperatures. The anisotropy exhibits a power-law dependence with temperature with exponent $n\approx2.1$. This agrees well with what observed experimentally and it is obtained without including a two-ion anisotropy term as in other approaches. Our work shows that incorporating longitudinal fluctuations into spin dynamics calculations is crucial for understanding the properties of materials with induced moments.

We present SIMPLE, a code developed to calculate optical properties of metallic and insulating extended systems using the optimal basis method originally proposed by E. L. Shirley in 1996. Two different approaches for the evaluation of the complex dielectric function are implemented: (i) the independent-particle approximation considering both interband and intraband contributions for metals and (ii) the Bethe-Salpeter equation for insulators. Since, notably, the optimal basis set is systematically improvable, accurate results can be obtained at a strongly reduced computational cost. Moreover, the simplicity of the method allows for a straightforward use of the code; improvement of the optimal basis and thus the overall precision of the simulations is simply controlled by one (for metals) or two (for insulators) input thresholds. The code is extensively tested, in terms of verification and performance, on bulk silver for metals and on bulk silicon for insulators.

Abstract:
We present an {\it ab-initio} study of the spin-transfer torque in a Fe/MgO/FePt/Fe magnetic tunnel junctions. We consider a FePt film with a thickness up to six unit cells, either in direct contact with the MgO spacer or with an intercalated ultra-thin Fe seed layer. We find that in the FePt layer the torque is not attenuated as strongly as in the case of pure Fe. Moreover, in FePt the torque alternates sign at the Fe and Pt atomic planes throughout the stack for all FePt thicknesses considered. Finally, when Fe is intercalated between MgO and L$1_0$-FePt, the torque is sharply attenuated and it is transferred to FePt only for a Fe seed layer that is less than two-atomic-planes thick. We attribute these features to the different spatial profiles of the exchange and correlation field and the induced non-equilibrium spin accumulation. The calculated tunnelling magneto-resistance of the Fe/MgO/FePt/Fe junctions studied is enhanced with respect to the one of Fe/MgO/Fe, while it is reduced with Fe intercalation. Our work shows that L$1_0$-FePt junctions can be promising candidates for current-operated magnetic devices and that the magnetic texture at the atomic scale has an important effect on the spin transfer torque.

We consider a finite number $N$ of interacting bosonic atoms at zero temperature confined in a one-dimensional double-well trap and study this system by using the two-site Bose-Hubbard (BH) Hamiltonian. For systems with $N=2$ and $N=3$, and $N=4$ bosons we analytically solve the eigenproblem associated to this Hamiltonian and find its lowest energetic state. We investigate the structure of the ground state by varying the strength of the boson-boson interaction from the strongly attractive regime to the deep repulsive one. We characterize the ground state of the two-site BH Hamiltonian by calculating the Fisher information $F$, the coherence visibility $α$, and the entanglement entropy $S$. For these quantities we provide analytical formulas that we use to study $F$, $α$, and $S$ as functions of the interaction between the particles. We discuss the difference existing, in the deep repulsive regime, between the case with an even number of bosons and that with an odd number of particles, both in the structure of the lowest energetic state and in the behavior of the three above ground-state characterizing parameters
