In a neutral system such as liquid helium-3, transport of mass, heat, and spin provide information analogous to electrical counterparts in metals, superconductors and topological materials. Of particular interest is transport in strongly confining channels of height approaching the superfluid coherence length, where new quantum states are found and excitations bound to surfaces and edges should be present. Here we report on the thermal conduction of helium-3 in a 1.1~$μ$m high microfabricated channel. In the normal state we observe a diffusive thermal conductivity that is approximately temperature independent, consistent with recent work on the interference of bulk and boundary scattering. In the superfluid state we measure diffusive thermal transport in the absence of thermal counterflow. An anomalous thermal response is also detected in the superfluid which we suggest may arise from a flux of surface excitations.

We develop a microscopic and gauge-invariant theory for collective modes resulting from the phase of the superconducting order parameter in non-centrosymmetric superconductors. Considering various crystal symmetries we derive the corresponding gauge mode $ω_{\rm G}({\bf q})$ and find, in particular, new Leggett modes $ω_{\rm L}({\bf q})$ with characteristic properties that are unique to non-centrosymmetric superconductors. We calculate their mass and dispersion that reflect the underlying spin-orbit coupling and thus the balance between triplet and singlet superconductivity occurring simultaneously. Finally, we demonstrate the role of the Anderson-Higgs mechanism: while the long-range Coulomb interaction shifts $ω_{\rm G}({\bf q})$ to the condensate plasma mode $ω_{\rm P}({\bf q})$, it leaves the mass $Λ_0$ of the new Leggett mode unaffected and only slightly modifies its dispersion.

We present a systematic study of the response properties of two-band (multi-gap) superconductors with spin-singlet (s-wave) pairing correlations, which are assumed to be caused by both intraband (λ_{ii}, i=1,2) and interband (λ_{12}) pairing interactions. In this first of three planned publications we concentrate on the properties of such superconducting systems in global and local thermodynamic equilibrium, the latter including weak perturbations in the stationary long-wavelength limit. The discussion of global thermodynamic equilibrium must include the solution (analytical in the Ginzburg-Landau and the low temperature limit) of the coupled self-consistency equations for the two energy gaps Δ_i(T), i=1,2. These solutions allow to study non-universal behavior of the two relevant BCS-Mühlschlegel parameters, namely the specific heat discontinuity ΔC/C_N and the zero temperature gaps Δ_i(0)/πk_B T_c, i=1,2. The discussion of a local equilibrium situation includes the calculation of the supercurrent density as a property of the condensate, and the calculation of both the specific heat capacity and the spin susceptibility as properties of the gas of thermal excitations in the spirit of a microscopic two-fluid description. Non-monotonic behavior in the temperature dependences of the gaps and all these local response functions is predicted to occur particularly for very small values of the interband pair-coupling constant λ_{12}.

We formulate a kinetic theory for non-centrosymmetric superconductors at low temperatures in the clean limit. The transport equations are solved quite generally in spin- and particle-hole (Nambu) space by performing first a transformation into the band basis and second a Bogoliubov transformation to the quasiparticle-quasihole phase space. Our result is a particle-hole-symmetric, gauge-invariant and charge conserving description, which is valid in the whole quasiclassical regime. We calculate the current response, the specific heat capacity, and the Raman response function. For the Raman case, we investigate within this framework the polarization-dependence of the electronic (pair-breaking) Raman response for the recently discovered non-centrosymmetric superconductors at zero temperature. Possible applications include the systems CePt$_3$Si and Li$_2$Pd$_x$Pt$_{3-x}$B, which reflect the two important classes of the involved spin-orbit coupling. We provide analytical expressions for the Raman vertices for these two classes and calculate the polarization-dependence of the electronic spectra. We predict a two-peak structure and different power laws with respect to the unknown relative magnitude of the singlet and triplet contributions to the superconducting order parameter, revealing a large variety of characteristic fingerprints of the underlying condensate.

We investigate the collision-limited electronic Raman response and the attenuation of ultrasound in spin-singlet d-wave superconductors at low temperatures. The dominating elastic collisions are treated within a t-matrix approximation, which combines the description of weak (Born) and strong (unitary) impurity scattering. In the long wavelength limit a two-fluid description of both response and transport emerges. Collisions are here seen to exclusively dominate the relaxational dynamics of the (Bogoliubov) quasiparticle system and the analysis allows for a clear connection of response and transport phenomena. When applied to quasi-2-d superconductors like the cuprates, it turns out that the transport parameter associated with the Raman scattering intensity for B1g and B2g photon polarization is closely related to the corresponding components of the shear viscosity tensor, which dominates the attenuation of ultrasound. At low temperatures we present analytic solutions of the transport equations, resulting in a non-power-law behavior of the transport parameters on temperature.

The calculations account for the long--range Coulomb interaction and treat the collision operator within a charge conserving relaxation time approximation. We extend earlier treatments to finite wavenumbers ($|{\bf q}|\ll k_{\rm F}$) and incorporate inelastic electron--electron scattering besides elastic impurity scattering. Moreover we generalize the Lindhard density response function to the Raman case. Numerical results for the quasiparticle scattering rate and the Raman response function for cuprate superconductors are presented.

A gauge invariant theory for electronic Raman scattering for superconductors with anisotropic pairing symmetry is analyzed in detail. It is shown that Raman scattering in anisotropic superconductors provides a wealth of polarization-dependent information which probes the detailed angular dependence of the superconducting ground state order parameter. The Raman spectra shows a unique polarization dependence for various anisotropic pair- state symmetries which affects the peak position of the spectra and generates symmetry dependent low frequency and temperature power-laws which can be used to uniquely identify the magnitude and symmetry of the energy gap. In particular, we calculate the collective modes and the subsequent symmetry--dependent Raman spectra for a $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ superconductor and compare our results to the relevant data on the cuprate systems as well as theoretical predictions for $s$--wave, anisotropic $s$--wave and $s+id$ energy gaps. Favorable agreement is shown with the predictions for $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ pairing and the experimental data on YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$, Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6}$.
