We report direct measurements of the magnetic field screening at the limits of the Meissner phase for two superconducting Nb samples. The samples are processed with two different surface treatments that have been developed for superconducting radio-frequency cavity applications -- a "baseline" treatment and an oxygen-do** ("O-do**") treatment. The measurements show: 1) that the screening length is significantly longer in the "O-do**" sample compared to the "baseline" sample; 2) that the screening length near the limits of the Meissner phase increases with applied field; 3) the evolution of the screening profile as the material transitions from the Meissner phase to the mixed phase; and 4) a demonstration of the absence of any screening profile for the highest applied field, indicative of the full flux entering the sample. Measurements are performed utilizing the $β$-detected nuclear magnetic resonance ($β$-NMR) technique that allows depth resolved studies of the local magnetic field within the first 100 nm of the surface. The study takes advantage of the $β$-SRF beamline, a new facility at TRIUMF, Canada, where field levels up to 200 mT are available parallel to the sample surface to replicate radio frequency (RF) fields near the Meissner breakdown limits of Nb.

We present comprehensive investigations into the structural, superconducting, and topological properties of Bi$_2$PdPt. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements performed on polycrystalline Bi$_2$PdPt demonstrate a superconducting transition at $\approx$ 0.8 K. Moreover, muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) measurements present evidence for a time reversal symmetry preserving, isotropically gapped superconducting state in Bi$_2$PdPt. We have also performed density-functional theory (DFT) calculations on Bi$_2$PdPt alongside the more general isostructural systems, BiPd$_{x}$Pt$_{1-x}$, of which Bi$_2$PdPt and $γ$-BiPd are special cases for $x=0.5$ and $x=1$ respectively. We have calculated the $Z_2$ topological index from our DFT calculations for a range of substitution fractions, $x$, between $x=0$ and $x=1$ characterizing the topology of the band structure. We find a non-trivial topological state when $x>0.75$ and a trivial topological state when $x<0.75$. Therefore our results indicate that BiPd$_{x}$Pt$_{1-x}$ could be a topological superconductor for $x>0.75$.

We report muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements of the temperature dependence of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth and the magnetic field dependence of the vortex core size in the mixed state of the non-symmorphic superconductor LaNiGa2. The temperature dependence of the normalized superfluid density is shown to be well described by a two-band model with strong interband coupling. Consistent with a strong coupling of the superconducting condensates in two different bands, we show that the field dependence of the vortex core size resembles that of a single-band superconductor. Our results lend support to the proposal that LaNiGa2 is a fully-gapped, internally antisymmetric nonunitary spin-triplet superconductor.

We have investigated the low-temperature local magnetic properties in the bulk of molten salt-flux (MSF) grown single crystals of the candidate odd-parity superconductor UTe2 by zero-field muon spin relaxation (muSR). In contrast to previous muSR studies of UTe2 single crystals grown by a chemical vapour transport (CVT) method, we find no evidence of magnetic clusters or electronic moments fluctuating slow enough to cause a discernible relaxation of the zero-field muSR asymmetry spectrum. Consequently, our measurements on MSF-grown single crystals rule out the generation of spontaneous magnetic fields in the bulk that would occur near impurities or lattice defects if the superconducting state of UTe2 breaks time-reversal symmetry. This result suggests UTe2 is characterized by a single-component superconducting order parameter.

The Ce$^{3+}$ pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ possess both dipolar and octupolar character which enables the possibility of novel quantum spin liquid ground states in this material. Here we report new muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on single crystal samples of Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in zero magnetic field and in magnetic fields directed along the $[1,\bar{1},0]$ and $[1,1,1]$ crystallographic directions, and for magnetic fields directed both longitudinal and transverse to the direction of muon polarization. Our zero-field results show no signs of magnetic ordering or spin freezing, consistent with earlier zero-field $μ$SR measurements on a powder sample of Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, and also with the expectations for a quantum spin ice. However, we measure a more gentle relaxation rate for Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in zero-field at low temperatures than was previously reported. This difference in relaxation rate is likely due to the low oxidation, and correspondingly, the high stoichiometry of our single crystal samples. Longitudinal field measurements confirm that the magnetic dipole moments in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ remain dynamic at $T = 0.1$ $\mathrm{K}$. For both $[1,\bar{1},0]$ and $[1,1,1]$ magnetic fields, our $μ$SR Knight shift measurements show a field-induced leveling off of the magnetic susceptibility at low temperature which is qualitatively consistent with corresponding calculations using the numerical-linked-cluster method in combination with recent estimates for the nearest-neighbour exchange parameters of Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$.

The local magnetic susceptibility of the spin-triplet superconductor UTe$_2$ has been investigated by positive muon ($μ^+$) Knight shift measurements in the normal state. Three distinct $μ^+$ Knight shift components are observed for a magnetic field applied parallel to the $c$ axis. Two of these exhibit a breakdown in the linear relationship with the bulk magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) below a temperature $T^* \! \sim \! 30$ K, which points to a gradual emergence of a correlated Kondo liquid. Below $T_{\rm r} \! \sim \! 12$ K linearity is gradually restored, indicating partial relocalization of the Kondo liquid quasiparticles. The third Knight shift component is two orders of magnitude larger, and despite the $c$-axis alignment of the external field, scales with the $a$-axis $χ$ above $T_{\rm r} \! \sim \! 12$ K. We conjecture that this component is associated with magnetic clusters and the change in the temperature dependence of all three Knight shift components below $T_{\rm r}$ is associated with a change in magnetic correlations. Our findings indicate that prior to the onset of superconductivity the development of the itinerant heavy-electron fluid is halted by a gradual development of local U $5f$-moment fluctuations.

We report measurements of the Meissner screening profile in a Nb(300 nm)/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ thin film using $^{8}$Li $β$-detected nuclear magnetic resonance ($β$-NMR). The NMR probe $^{8}$Li was ion-implanted into the Nb film at energies $\leq$ 20 keV, corresponding to mean stop** depths comparable to Nb's magnetic penetration depth $λ$. $^{8}$Li's strong dipole-dipole coupling with the host $^{93}$Nb nuclei provided a "cross-relaxation" channel that dominated in low magnetic fields, which conferred indirect sensitivity to the local magnetic field via the spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) rate $1/T_{1}$. From a fit of the $1/T_{1}$ data to a model accounting for its dependence on temperature, magnetic field, and $^{8}$Li$^{+}$ implantation energy, we obtained a magnetic penetration depth $λ_{0}$ = 51.5(22) nm, consistent with a relatively short carrier mean-free-path $\ell$ = 18.7(29) nm typical of similarly prepared Nb films. The results presented here constitute an important step towards using $^{8}$Li $β$-NMR to characterize bulk Nb samples with engineered surfaces, which are often used in the fabrication of particle accelerators.

This new beamline extension allows $β$-NMR spectroscopy to be performed with fields up to 200 mT parallel to a sample's surface (perpendicular to the ion beam), allowing depth-resolved studies of local electromagnetic fields with spin polarized probes at a much higher applied magnetic field than previously available in this configuration. The primary motivation and application is to allow studies of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) materials, close to the critical fields of Nb metal, which is extensively used to fabricate SRF cavities. The details of the design considerations and implementation of the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system, ion optics, beam diagnostics are presented here. Commissioning of the beamline and spectrometer with radioactive ions are also reported here. Future capabilities and applications in other areas are also described.

In most superconductors electrons form Cooper pairs in a spin-singlet state mediated by either phonons or by long-range interactions such as spin fluctuations. The superconductor UTe$_2$ is a rare material wherein electrons are believed to form pairs in a unique spin-triplet state with potential topological properties. While spin-triplet pairing may be mediated by ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic fluctuations, experimentally, the magnetic properties of UTe$_2$ are unclear. By way of muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on independently grown UTe$_2$ single crystals we demonstrate the existence of magnetic clusters that gradually freeze into a disordered spin frozen state at low temperatures. Our findings suggest that inhomogeneous freezing of magnetic clusters is linked to the ubiquitous residual linear term in the temperature dependence of the specific heat ($C$) and the low-temperature upturn in $C/T$ versus $T$. The omnipresent magnetic inhomogeneity has potential implications for experiments aimed at establishing the intrinsic low-temperature properties of UTe$_2$.

We report the physical properties of $R$Cd$_{3}$As$_{3}$ ($R$ = La and Ce) compounds, crystallized into a hexagonal ScAl$_{3}$C$_{3}$-type structure ($P$6$_{3}$/mmc) such that the $R$ sublattice forms a spin-orbit coupled triangular lattice. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the 4$f$ electrons of Ce$^{3+}$ ions are well localized and reveal a large magnetic anisotropy. The electrical resistivity and specific heat measurement for $R$Cd$_{3}$As$_{3}$ exhibit an anomaly at high temperatures ($T_{0}$ $\sim$ 63 K for $R$ = La and $T_{0}$ $\sim$ 136 K for $R$ = Ce), most likely due to a structural transition. Specific heat measurements for CeCd$_{3}$As$_{3}$ clearly indicate a long range magnetic order below $T_{N}$ = 0.42 K. Although the magnetic contribution to the specific heat $C_{m}/T$ increases significantly below $\sim$ 10 K, the electrical resistivity for CeCd$_{3}$As$_{3}$ follows typical, metallic behavior inconsistent with Kondo lattice systems. In CeCd$_3$As$_3$ only $\sim$ 40 $\%$ of the $R \ln(2)$ magnetic entropy is recovered by $T_N$ and the $R$ln(2) entropy is fully achieved at about the Curie-Weiss temperature $|θ_{p}|$. Unusually, based on our current investigations, the magnetic specific heat below $|θ_{p}|$ is not attributed to a Kondo contribution, but rather associated with the magnetic ordering and frustration on the triangular lattice. Specific heat measurements in applied magnetic field show a negligible variation of $T_{N}$ for $H \parallel c$, whereas a suppression of $T_{N}$ is observed above 40 kOe for $H \parallel ab$. Such behavior is consistent with the application a magnetic field within the $ab$-plane breaking the triangular symmetry and partially relieving the magnetic frustration in this system.

At ultradilute concentrations, the spectra reveal distinct Li sites from 7.6 to 400 K. Ionized shallow donor interstitial Li is stable across the entire temperature range, confirming its ability to self-compensate the acceptor character of its (Zn) substitutional counterpart. Above 300 K, spin-lattice relaxation indicates the onset of correlated local motion of interacting defects, and the spectra show a site change transition from disordered configurations to substitutional. Like the interstitial, the substitutional shows no resolved hyperfine splitting, indicating it is also fully ionized above 210 K. The electric field gradient at the interstitial $^8$Li exhibits substantial temperature dependence with a power law typical of non-cubic metals.

We report a $μ$SR investigation of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor (LaNiC$_2$) in single crystal form. Compared to previous $μ$SR studies of non-centrosymmetric superconducting polycrystalline and powder samples, the unambiguous orientation of single crystals enables a simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth and the vortex core size from measurements that probe the magnetic field distribution in the vortex state. The magnetic field dependence of these quantities unambiguously demonstrates the presence of two nodeless superconducting energy gaps. In addition, we detect weak internal magnetic fields in the superconducting phase, confirming earlier $μ$SR evidence for a time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting state. Our results suggest that Cooper pairing in LaNiC$_2$ is characterized by the same interorbital equal-spin pairing model introduced to describe the pairing state in the centrosymmetric superconductor LaNiGa$_2$.

We present an extended zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-$μ$SR) study of overdoped Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) single crystals, intended to elucidate the origin of weak quasistatic magnetism previously detected by $μ$SR in the superconducting and normal states of optimally-doped and overdoped samples. New results on heavily-overdoped single crystals show a similar monotonically decreasing ZF-$μ$SR relaxation rate with increasing temperature that persists above the pseudogap (PG) temperature $T^*$ and does not evolve with hole do** ($p$). Additional measurements using an ultra-low background apparatus confirm that this behavior is an intrinsic property of Bi2212, which cannot be due to magnetic order associated with the PG phase. Instead we show that the temperature-dependent relaxation rate is most likely caused by structural changes that modify the contribution of the nuclear dipole fields to the ZF-$μ$SR signal. Our results for Bi2212 emphasize the importance of not assuming the nuclear-dipole field contribution is independent of temperature in ZF-$μ$SR studies of high-temperature (high-$T_c$) cuprate superconductors, and do not support a recent $μ$SR study of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ that claims to detect magnetic order in the PG phase.

By means of new muon spin relaxation experiments, we disentangle extrinsic and intrinsic sources of low-temperature bulk magnetism in the candidate topological Kondo insulator (TKI) SmB6. Results on Al-flux grown SmB6 single crystals are compared to those on a large floating-zone grown ^{154}Sm^{11}B6 single crystal in which a 14 meV bulk spin exciton has been detected by inelastic neutron scattering. Below ~ 10 K we detect the gradual development of quasi-static magnetism due to rare-earth impurities and Sm vacancies. Our measurements also reveal two additional forms of intrinsic magnetism: 1) underlying low-energy (~ 100 neV) weak magnetic moment (~ 10^{-2} mu_B) fluctuations similar to those detected in the related candidate TKI YbB12 that persist down to millikelvin temperatures, and 2) magnetic fluctuations consistent with a 2.6 meV bulk magnetic excitation at zero magnetic field that appears to hinder surface conductivity above ~ 4.5 K. We discuss potential origins of the magnetism.

The compound is also a heavy fermion material with a large specific heat coefficient $γ$=110 mJ $\cdot$ mol$^{-1}$ $\cdot$ K$^{-2}$ and a high Kondo temperature of $T_{K}$=50 K indicative that CeRhSi$_{3}$ is in a strongly Kondo screened state. We apply high resolution neutron spectroscopy to investigate the magnetic fluctuations in the normal phase, at ambient pressures, and at low temperatures. We measure a commensurate dynamic response centered around the $\vec{Q}$=(0, 0, 2) position that gradually evolves to H$\sim$ 0.2 with decreasing temperature and/or energy transfers. The response is broadened both in momentum and energy and not reminiscent of sharp spin wave excitations found in insulating magnets where the electrons are localized. We parameterize the excitation spectrum and temperature dependence using a heuristic model utilizing the random phase approximation to couple relaxing Ce$^{3+}$ ground state Kramers doublets with a Kondo-like dynamic response. With a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction within the $ab$ plane and an increasing single site susceptibility, we can qualitatively reproduce the neutron spectroscopic results in CeRhSi$_{3}$ and namely the trade-off between scattering at commensurate and incommensurate positions. We suggest that the antiferromagnetic phase in CeRhSi$_{3}$ is driven by weakly correlated relaxing localized Kramers doublets and that CeRhSi$_{3}$ at ambient pressures is on the border between a Rudderman-Kittel-Yosida antiferromagnetic state and a Kondo screened phase where static magnetism is predominately absent.

We report measurements of the diffusion rate of isolated ion-implanted $^{8}$Li$^{+}$ within $\sim$120 nm of the surface of oriented single-crystal rutile TiO$_2$ using a radiotracer technique. The $α$-particles from the $^{8}$Li decay provide a sensitive monitor of the distance from the surface and how the depth profile of $^{8}$Li evolves with time. The main findings are that the implanted Li$^{+}$ diffuses and traps at the (001) surface. The T-dependence of the diffusivity is described by a bi-Arrhenius expression with activation energies of 0.3341(21) eV above 200 K, whereas at lower temperatures it has a much smaller barrier of 0.0313(15) eV. We consider possible origins for the surface trap**, as well the nature of the low-T barrier.

A characteristic F-$μ$-F muon spin polarization function is observed at high temperatures where Ni spin fluctuations are sufficiently rapid. The Ni$^{2+}$ spins undergo spin freezing into a disordered ground state below 4~K, with a characteristic internal field strength of 140~G. Persistent Ni spin dynamics are present to our lowest temperatures (75~mK), a feature characteristic of many geometrically frustrated magnetic systems.

The Kondo insulator SmB6 is purported to develop into a robust topological insulator at low temperature. Yet there are several puzzling and unexplained physical properties of the insulating bulk. It has been proposed that bulk spin excitons may be the source of these anomalies and may also adversely affect the topologically-protected metallic surface states. Here, we report muon spin rotation measurements of SmB6 that show thermally-activated behavior for the temperature dependences of the transverse-field (TF) relaxation rate below 20 K and muon Knight shift below 5-6 K. Our data are consistent with the freezing out of a bulk low-energy (~ 1 meV) spin exciton concurrent with the appearance of metallic surface conductivity. Furthermore, our results support the idea that spin excitons play some role in the anomalous low-temperature bulk properties of SmB6.

Two phase transitions in the tetragonal strongly correlated electron system CeNiAsO were probed by neutron scattering and zero field muon spin rotation. For $T <T_{N1}$ = 8.7(3) K, a second order phase transition yields an incommensurate spin density wave with wave vector $\textbf{k} = (0.44(4), 0, 0)$. For $T < T_{N2}$ = 7.6(3) K, we find co-planar commensurate order with a moment of $0.37(5)~μ_B$, reduced to $30 \%$ of the saturation moment of the $|\pm\frac{1}{2}\rangle$ Kramers doublet ground state, which we establish by inelastic neutron scattering. Muon spin rotation in $\rm CeNiAs_{1-x}P_xO$ shows the commensurate order only exists for x $\le$ 0.1 so the transition at $x_c$ = 0.4(1) is from an incommensurate longitudinal spin density wave to a paramagnetic Fermi liquid.

A neutron scattering investigation of the magnetoelectric coupling in PbFe_{1/2}Nb_{1/2}O_{3} (PFN) has been undertaken. Ferroelectric order occurs below 400 K, as evidenced by the softening with temperature and subsequent recovery of the zone center transverse optic phonon mode energy (\hbar Ω_{0}). Over the same temperature range, magnetic correlations become resolution limited on a terahertz energy scale. In contrast to the behavior of nonmagnetic disordered ferroelectrics (namely Pb(Mg,Zn)_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_{3}), we report the observation of a strong deviation from linearity in the temperature dependence of (\hbar Ω_{0})^{2}. This deviation is compensated by a corresponding change in the energy scale of the magnetic excitations, as probed through the first moment of the inelastic response. The coupling between the short-range ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic correlations is consistent with calculations showing that the ferroelectricity is driven by the displacement of the body centered iron site, illustrating the multiferroic nature of magnetic lead based relaxors in the dynamical regime.

The simultaneous spin and charge do** via hetero-valence (Ga3+,Mn2+) substitution, however, resulted in severely limited solubility without availability of bulk specimens. Previously we synthesized a new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor of bulk Li(Zn,Mn)As with Tc up to 50K, where isovalent (Zn,Mn) spin do** was separated from charge control via Li concentrations. Here we report the synthesis of a new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ba1-xKx)(Zn1-yMny)2As2, isostructural to iron 122 system, where holes are doped via (Ba2+, K1+), while spins via (Zn2+,Mn2+) substitutions. Bulk samples with x=0.1-0.3 and y=0.05-0.15 exhibit ferromagnetic order with TC up to 180K, comparable to that of record high Tc for Ga(MnAs), significantly enhanced than Li(Zn,Mn)As. Moreover the (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2 shares the same 122 crystal structure with semiconducting BaZn2As2, antiferromagnetic BaMn2As2, and superconducting (Ba,K)Fe2As2, which makes them promising to the development of multilayer functional devices.

We report low temperature specific heat and muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on both polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the pyrochlore magnet Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. This system is believed to possess a spin Hamiltonian supporting a Quantum Spin Ice (QSI) ground state and to display sample variation in its low temperature heat capacity. Our two samples exhibit extremes of this sample variation, yet our $μ$SR measurements indicate a similar disordered low temperature state down to 16 mK in both. We report little temperature dependence to the spin relaxation and no evidence for ferromagnetic order, in contrast to recent reports by Chang \emph{et al.} (Nat. Comm. {\bf 3}, 992 (2012)). Transverse field (TF) $μ$SR measurements show changes in the temperature dependence of the muon Knight shift which coincide with heat capacity anomalies. We are therefore led to propose that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters a hidden order ground state below $T_c\sim265$ mK where the nature of the ordered state is unknown but distinct from simple long range order.

History dependent behavior emerges below T*_0 ~ 0.6 K near zero magnetic field, in common with other spin ice compounds. In large magnetic fields we observe a magnetization plateau followed by a hysteretic metamagnetic transition. The temperature dependence of the coercive fields as well as the susceptibility calculated from the magnetization identify the metamagnetic transition as a line of first order transitions terminating in a critical endpoint at T*_m ~ 0.37 K, B*_m ~ 1.5 T. The metamagnetic transition in Ho2Ti2O7 is strongly reminiscent of that observed in Dy2Ti2O7, suggestive of a general feature of the spin ices.

The magnetic phase diagram inferred from the magnetization is essentially isotropic, without evidence of magnetization plateaux as anticipated for so-called quantum spin ice, predicted theoretically for [111] when quantum fluctuations renormalize the interactions. Instead, the magnetization for $T \ll T*$ agrees semi-quantitatively with the predictions of "all-in/all-out" (AIAO) antiferromagnetism. Taken together this suggests that the spin liquid state in Tb2Ti2O7 is akin to an incipient AIAO-antiferromagnet.

We report low-energy inelastic neutron scattering data of the paramagnetic (PM) to hidden-order (HO) phase transition at $T_0=17.5\,{\rm K}$ in URu$_2$Si$_2$. While confirming previous results for the HO and PM phases, our data reveal a pronounced wavevector dependence of low-energy excitations across the phase transition. To analyze the energy scans we employ a damped harmonic oscillator model containing a fit parameter $1/Γ$ which is expected to diverge at a second-order phase transition. Counter to expectations the excitations at $\vec{Q}_1=(1.44,0,0)$ show an abrupt step-like suppression of $1/Γ$ below $T_0$, whereas excitations at $\vec{Q}_0=(1,0,0)$, associated with large-moment antiferromagnetism (LMAF) under pressure, show an enhancement and a pronounced peak of $1/Γ$ at $T_0$. Therefore, at the critical HO temperature $T_0$, LMAF fluctuations become nearly critical as well. This is the behavior expected of a super-vector order parameter with nearly degenerate components for the HO and LMAF leading to nearly isotropic fluctuations in the combined order-parameter space.

We demonstrate via a new series of muSR experiments in Dy_2Ti_2O_7 that such an effect is not observable in a TF muSR experiment. Rather, as found in many highly frustrated magnetic materials, we observe spin fluctuations which become temperature independent at low temperatures, behavior which dominates over any possible signature of thermally nucleated monopole excitations.

Instead, below $\approx$300mK we observed dynamic magnetism characterized by a single correlation time with a temperature independent fluctuation rate. We observed that this low temperature fluctuation rate increases with x up to 0.08, above which it levels off. The 300mK energy scale corresponds to the Ho3+ hyperfine interaction strength, suggesting that the hyperfine interaction may be intimately involved with the spin dynamics in this system.

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies have been carried out on the pyrochlore magnet Ho2Ti2O7. Measurements in zero applied magnetic field show that the disordered spin ice ground state of Ho2Ti2O7 is characterized by a pattern of rectangular diffuse elastic scattering within the [HHL] plane of reciprocal space, which closely resembles the zone boundary scattering seen in its sister compound Dy2Ti2O7. Well-defined peaks in the zone boundary scattering develop only within the spin ice ground state below ~ 2 K. In contrast, the overall diffuse scattering pattern evolves on a much higher temperature scale of ~ 17 K. The diffuse scattering at small wavevectors below [001] is found to vanish on going to Q=0, an explicit signature of expectations for dipolar spin ice. Very high energy-resolution inelastic measurements reveal that the spin ice ground state below ~ 2 K is also characterized by a transition from dynamic to static spin correlations on the time scale of 10^{-9} seconds. Measurements in a magnetic field applied along the [1${\bar1}$0] direction in zero-field cooled conditions show that the system can be broken up into orthogonal sets of polarized alpha chains along [1${\bar1}$0] and quasi-one-dimensional beta chains along [110]. Three dimensional correlations between beta chains are shown to be very sensitive to the precise alignment of the [1${\bar1}$0] externally applied magnetic field.

Such a rotation in the orientation of the static spin ordering as a function of increasing Ba do**, from diagonal to collinear, is roughly coincident with the transition from an insulating to a superconducting ground state and is similar to that observed in the related La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} system. This phenomenon is therefore a generic property of underdoped La-214 cuprates.

Static two dimensional incommensurate magnetic order appears below T$_N$=39.5 $\pm$ 0.3 K in \LBCO (x=0.095) and a similar temperature for x=0.08 within the low temperature tetragonal phase. The spin order is unaffected by either the onset of superconductivity or the application of magnetic fields of up to 7 Tesla applied along the c-axis in the x=0.095 sample. Such magnetic field {\it independent} behaviour is in marked contrast with the field induced enhancement of the staggered magnetisation observed in the related \LSCO system, indicating this phenomenon is not a universal property of cuprate superconductors. Surprisingly, we find that incommensurability $δ$ is only weakly dependent on do** relative to \LSCO. Dispersive excitations in \LBCO (x=0.095) at the same incommensurate wavevector persist up to at least 60 K. The dynamical spin susceptibility of the low energy spin excitations saturates below \tc, in a similar manner to that seen in the superconducting state of La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$.

We have studied structural phase transitions in high quality underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ single crystals using high resolution x-ray scattering techniques. Critical properties associated with the continuous High Temperature Tetragonal (HTT, $I4/mmm$) to Middle Temperature Orthorhombic (MTO, $Cmca$) phase transition were investigated in single crystal samples with x=0.125, 0.095, and 0.08 and we find that all behavior is consistent with three dimensional XY criticality, as expected from theory. Power law behavior in the orthorhombic strain, 2(a-b)/(a+b), is observed over a remarkably wide temperature range, spanning most of the MTO regime in the phase diagram. Low temperature measurements investigating the Low Temperature Tetragonal (LTT, $P4_{2}/ncm$) phase, below the strongly discontinuous MTO$\to$LTT phase transition, in x=0.125 and x=0.095 samples show that the LTT phase is characterized by relatively broad Bragg scattering, compared with that observed at related wavevectors in the HTT phase. This shows that the LTT phase is either an admixture of tetragonal and orthorhombic phases, or that it is orthorhombic with very small orthorhombic strain, consistent with the ``less orthorhombic" low temperature structure previously reported in mixed La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x-y}$Ba$_y$CuO$_4$ single crystals. We compare the complex temperature-composition phase diagram for the location of structural and superconducting phase transitions in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ and find good agreement with results obtained on polycrystalline samples.

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) have been studied extensively in correlated electron systems. Characterization of magnetism at QPTs has, however, been limited by the volume-integrated feature of neutron and magnetization measurements and by pressure uncertainties in NMR studies using powderized specimens. Overcoming these limitations, we performed muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements which have a unique sensitivity to volume fractions of magnetically ordered and paramagnetic regions, and studied QPTs from itinerant heli/ferro magnet to paramagnet in MnSi (single-crystal; varying pressure) and (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)RuO$_{3}$ (ceramic specimens; varying $x$). Our results provide the first clear evidence that both cases are associated with spontaneous phase separation and suppression of dynamic critical behavior, revealed a slow but dynamic character of the ``partial order'' diffuse spin correlations in MnSi above the critical pressure, and, combined with other known results in heavy-fermion and cuprate systems, suggest a possibility that a majority of QPTs involve first-order transitions and/or phase separation.

High resolution neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal of SrCu(2-x)Mgx(BO3)2 with x=0.05 reveal the presence of new spin excitations within the gap of this quasi-two dimensional, singlet ground state system. Application of a magnetic field induces Zeeman-split states associated with S=1/2 unpaired spins which are antiferromagnetically correlated with the bulk singlet. Substantial broadening of both the one and two-triplet excitations in the doped single crystal is observed, as compared with pure SrCu2(BO3)2. Theoretical calculations using a variational algorithm and a single quenched magnetic vacancy on an infinite lattice are shown to qualitatively account for these effects.

High resolution time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on Tb2Ti2O7 reveal a rich low temperature phase diagram in the presence of a magnetic field applied along [110]. In zero field at T=0.4 K, terbium titanate is a highly correlated cooperative paramagnet with disordered spins residing on a pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Application of a small field condenses much of the magnetic diffuse scattering, characteristic of the disordered spins, into a new Bragg peak characteristic of a polarized paramagnet. At higher fields, a magnetically ordered phase is induced, which supports spin wave excitations indicative of continuous, rather than Ising-like spin degrees of freedom.

The temperature independent behavior below ~ 400 mK is consistent with a nodeless superconducting energy gap. Zero-field measurements indicate no static magnetic fields develo** below the transition temperature.

Muon-spin rotation spectroscopy has been used to measure the internal magnetic field distribution in NbSe2 for Hc1 << H < 0.25 Hc2. The deduced profiles of the supercurrent density indicate that the vortex-core radius in the bulk decreases sharply with increasing magnetic field. This effect, which is attributed to increased vortex-vortex interactions, does not agree with the dirty-limit microscopic theory. A simple phenomenological equation in which the core radius depends on the intervortex spacing is used to model this behaviour. In addition, we find for the first time that the in-plane magnetic penetration depth increases linearly with H in the vortex state of a conventional superconductor.

The spin dynamics of geometrically frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnets Y2Mo2O7 and Tb2Mo2O7 have been investigated using muon spin relaxation. A dramatic slowing down of the moment fluctuations occurs as one approaches the spin freezing temperatures (TF=22 K and 25 K respectively) from above. Below TF there is a disordered magnetic state similar to that found in a spin glass but with a residual muon spin relaxation rate at low temperatures. These results show that there is a large density of states for magnetic excitations in these systems near zero energy.
