In the study of dynamic charge order correlations in the cuprates, most high energy-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements have focused on momenta along the high-symmetry directions of the copper oxide plane. However, electron scattering along other in-plane directions should not be neglected as they may contain information relevant, for example, to the origin of charge order correlations or to our understanding of the isotropic scattering responsible for strange metal behavior in cuprates. We report high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments that reveal the presence of dynamic electron correlations over the $q_x$-$q_y$ scattering plane in underdoped $\textrm{Bi}_2\textrm{Sr}_2\textrm{Ca}\textrm{Cu}_2\textrm{O}_{8+δ}$ with $T_c=54$ K. We use the softening of the RIXS-measured bond stretching phonon line as a marker for the presence of charge-order-related dynamic electron correlations. The experiments show that these dynamic correlations exist at energies below approximately $70$ meV and are centered around a quasi-circular manifold in the $q_x$-$q_y$ scattering plane with radius equal to the magnitude of the charge order wave vector, $q_{CO}$. We also demonstrate how this phonon-tracking procedure provides the necessary experimental precision to rule out fluctuations of short-range directional charge order (i.e. centered around $[q_x=\pm q_{CO}, q_y=0]$ and $[q_x=0, q_y=\pm q_{CO}]$) as the origin of the observed correlations.

In strongly correlated systems the strength of Coulomb interactions between electrons, relative to their kinetic energy, plays a central role in determining their emergent quantum mechanical phases. We perform resonant x-ray scattering on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, a prototypical cuprate superconductor, to probe electronic correlations within the CuO$_2$ plane. We discover a dynamic quasi-circular pattern in the $x$-$y$ scattering plane with a radius that matches the wave vector magnitude of the well-known static charge order. Along with do**- and temperature-dependent measurements, our experiments reveal a picture of charge order competing with superconductivity where short-range domains along $x$ and $y$ can dynamically rotate into any other in-plane direction. This quasi-circular spectrum, a hallmark of Brazovskii-type fluctuations, has immediate consequences to our understanding of rotational and translational symmetry breaking in the cuprates. We discuss how the combination of short- and long-range Coulomb interactions results in an effective non-monotonic potential that may determine the quasi-circular pattern.

We investigate the order parameter dynamics of the stripe-ordered nickelate, La$_{1.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$NiO$_4$, using time-resolved resonant X-ray diffraction. In spite of distinct spin and charge energy scales, the two order parameters' amplitude dynamics are found to be linked together due to strong coupling. Additionally, the vector nature of the spin sector introduces a longer re-orientation time scale which is absent in the charge sector. These findings demonstrate that the correlation linking the symmetry-broken states does not unbind during the non-equilibrium process, and the time scales are not necessarily associated with the characteristic energy scales of individual degrees of freedom.

We present a temperature-dependent x-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS) study of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7. The XAS results reveal that the MIT drives the onset of local antiferromagnetic correlations around the Mn impurities, a precursor of the long-range antiferromagnetism detected by REXS at T_order<T_MIT. This establishes that the MIT is of the Mott-type (electronic correlations) as opposed to Slater-type (magnetic order). While this behavior is induced by Mn impurities, the (1/4,1/4,0) order exists for a wide range of Mn concentrations, and points to an inherent instability of the parent compound.

The dynamics of an order parameter's amplitude and phase determines the collective behaviour of novel states emerged in complex materials. Time- and momentum-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, by virtue of its ability to measure material properties at atomic and electronic time scales and create excited states not accessible by the conventional means can decouple entangled degrees of freedom by visualizing their corresponding dynamics in the time domain. Here, combining time-resolved femotosecond optical and resonant x-ray diffraction measurements on striped La1.75Sr0.25NiO4, we reveal unforeseen photo-induced phase fluctuations of the charge order parameter. Such fluctuations preserve long-range order without creating topological defects, unlike thermal phase fluctuations near the critical temperature in equilibrium10. Importantly, relaxation of the phase fluctuations are found to be an order of magnitude slower than that of the order parameter's amplitude fluctuations, and thus limit charge order recovery. This discovery of new aspect to phase fluctuation provides more holistic view for the importance of phase in ordering phenomena of quantum matter.

We performed resonant soft X-ray diffraction on known charge density wave (CDW) compounds, rare earth tri-tellurides. Near the $M_5$ (3d - 4f) absorption edge of rare earth ions, an intense diffraction peak is detected at a wavevector identical to that of CDW state hosted on Te$_2$ planes, indicating a CDW-induced modulation on the rare earth ions. Surprisingly, the temperature dependence of the diffraction peak intensity demonstrates an exponential increase at low temperatures, vastly different than that of the CDW order parameter. Assuming 4f multiplet splitting due to the CDW states,we present a model to calculate X-ray absorption spectrum and resonant profile of the diffraction peak, agreeing well with experimental observations. Our results demonstrate a situation where the temperature dependence of resonant X-ray diffraction peak intensity is not directly related to the intrinsic behavior of the order parameter associated with the electronic order, but is dominated by the thermal occupancy of the valence states.

We present a re-examination of the electronic structure and Fermi Surface (FS) of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) as obtained from angle-resolved photoemission experiments. By applying a stricter set of FS crossing criteria as well as by varying the incident photon energy outside the usual range, we have found very different behavior from that previously observed. In particular we have found an electron-like FS centered around the Gamma point, and the flat bands at E_F near the M point of the zone are absent. These results are robust over a large range of do**s and from single to double layer samples.
