Abstract:
We give evidence for 3d bosonization in Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) by computing monopole operator scaling dimensions in 2+1 dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED3) with Chern-Simons level $k$ and $N$ complex bosons in a large $N,k$ expansion. We first consider the $k=0$ case, where we show that scaling dimensions previously computed to subleading order in $1/N$ can be extrapolated to $N=1$ and matched to $O(2)$ Wilson-Fisher CFT scaling dimensions with around 5\% error, which is evidence for particle-vortex duality. We then generalize the subleading calculation to large $N,k$ and fixed $k/N$, extrapolate to $N=k=1$, and consider monopole operators that are conjectured to be dual to non-degenerate scalar operators in a theory of a single Dirac fermion. We find matches typically with 1\% error or less, which is strong evidence of this so-called `seed' duality that implies a web of 3d bosonization dualities among CFTs.

Upper critical dimension of the 3-state Potts model

Abstract:
We consider the 3-state Potts model in $d\geq2$ dimensions. For $d$ less than the upper critical dimension $d_\text{crit}$, the model has a critical and a tricritical fixed point. In $d=2$, these fixed points are described by minimal models, and so are exactly solvable. For $d>2$, however, strong coupling makes them difficult to study and there is no consensus on the value of $d_\text{crit}$. We u…

In $d=2$, these fixed points are described by minimal models, and so are exactly solvable. For $d>2$, however, strong coupling makes them difficult to study and there is no consensus on the value of $d_\text{crit}$. We use the numerical conformal bootstrap to compute critical exponents of both the critical and tricritical fixed points for general $d$. In $d=2$ our results match the expected values, and as we increase $d$ we find that the critical exponents of each fixed point get closer until they merge near $d_\text{crit}\lesssim 2.5$.

We construct an explicit bulk dual in anti-de Sitter space, with couplings of order $1/N$, for the $SU(N)$-singlet sector of QED in $d$ space-time dimensions ($2 < d < 4$) coupled to $N$ scalar fields. We begin from the bulk dual for the theory of $N$ complex free scalar fields that we constructed in our previous work, and couple this to $U(1)$ gauge fields living on the boundary in order to get the bulk dual of scalar QED (in which the $U(1)$ gauge fields become the boundary value of the bulk vector fields). As in our previous work, the bulk dual is non-local but we can write down an explicit action for it. We focus on the CFTs arising at low energies (or, equivalently, when the $U(1)$ gauge coupling goes to infinity). For $d=3$ we discuss also the addition of a Chern-Simons term for $U(1)$, modifying the boundary conditions for the bulk gauge field. We also discuss the generalization to QCD, with $U(N_c)$ gauge fields coupled to $N$ scalar fields in the fundamental representation (in the large $N$ limit with fixed $N_c$).

In the large $N$ expansion, monopole operators in this theory with spins $\ell<O(\sqrt{N})$ and associated flavor representations are expected to have the same scaling dimension to sub-leading order in $1/N$. We use the state-operator correspondence to calculate the scaling dimension to sub-leading order with the result $N-0.2789+O(1/N)$, which improves on existing leading order results. We also compute the $\ell^2/N$ term that breaks the degeneracy to sub-leading order for monopoles with spins $\ell=O(\sqrt{N})$.

We study the critical $O(3)$ model using the numerical conformal bootstrap. In particular, we use a recently developed cutting-surface algorithm to efficiently map out the allowed space of CFT data from correlators involving the leading $O(3)$ singlet $s$, vector $φ$, and rank-2 symmetric tensor $t$. We determine their scaling dimensions to be $(Δ_{s}, Δ_φ, Δ_{t}) = (0.518942(51), 1.59489(59), 1.20954(23))$, and also bound various OPE coefficients. We additionally introduce a new "tip-finding" algorithm to compute an upper bound on the leading rank-4 symmetric tensor $t_4$, which we find to be relevant with $Δ_{t_4} < 2.99056$. The conformal bootstrap thus provides a numerical proof that systems described by the critical $O(3)$ model, such as classical Heisenberg ferromagnets at the Curie transition, are unstable to cubic anisotropy.

Together with recent progress in large-scale semidefinite programming, this enables bootstrap studies of much larger systems of correlation functions than was previously practical. We apply these methods to correlation functions of charge-0, 1, and 2 scalars in the 3d $O(2)$ model, computing new precise values for scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients in this theory. Our new determinations of scaling dimensions are consistent with and improve upon existing Monte Carlo simulations, sharpening the existing decades-old $8σ$ discrepancy between theory and experiment.

We study the one-dimensional complex conformal manifold that controls the infrared dynamics of a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theory of three chiral superfields with a cubic superpotential. Two special points on this conformal manifold are the well-known XYZ model and three decoupled copies of the critical Wess-Zumino model. The conformal manifold enjoys a discrete duality group isomorphic to $S_4$ and can be thought of as an orbifold of $\mathbf{CP}^1$. We use the $4-\varepsilon$ expansion and the numerical conformal bootstrap to calculate the spectrum of conformal dimensions of low-lying operators and their OPE coefficients, and find a very good quantitative agreement between the two approaches.

We work in the limit where both $N$ and $k$ are taken to be large with $κ= k/N$ fixed. In this limit, we extract information about the low-lying spectrum of monopole operators from evaluating the $S^2 \times S^1$ partition function in the sector where the $S^2$ is threaded by magnetic flux $4 πq$. At leading order in $N$, we find a large number of monopole operators with equal scaling dimensions and a wide range of spins and flavor symmetry irreducible representations. In two simple cases, we deduce how the degeneracy in the scaling dimensions is broken by the $1/N$ corrections. For QED$_3$ at $κ=0$, we provide conformal bootstrap evidence that this near-degeneracy is in fact maintained to small values of $N$. For ${\cal N} = 2$ SQED$_3$, we find that the lowest dimension monopole operator is generically non-BPS.

The infrared dynamics of $2+1$ dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with a large number $N$ of fermion flavors is governed by an interacting CFT that can be studied in the $1/N$ expansion. We use the $1/N$ expansion to calculate the scaling dimensions of all the lowest three scalar operators that transform under the $SU(N)$ flavor symmetry as a Young diagram with two columns of not necessarily equal heights and that have vanishing topological charge. In the case of $SU(N)$ singlets, we study the mixing of $(\bar ψ_i ψ^i)(\bar ψ_j ψ^j)$ and $F_{μν} F^{μν}$, which are the lowest dimension parity-even singlets. Our results suggest that these operators are irrelevant for all $N>1$.
