The magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ is extensively investigated due to its giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE).Recent studies demonstrate that the AHE can be effectively tuned by multi-electron Ni do**.To reveal the underlying mechanism of this significant manipulation,it is crucial to explore the band structure modification caused by Ni do**. Here,we study the electrodynamics of both pristine and Ni-doped Co$_{3-x}$Ni$_x$Sn$_2$S$_2$ with $x=$0, 0.11 and 0.17 by infrared spectroscopy. We find that the inverted energy gap around the Fermi level($E_{F}$) gets smaller at $x=$0.11,which is supposed to enhance the Berry curvature and therefore increase the AHE.Then $E_{F}$ moves out of this gap at $x=$0.17. Additionally, the low temperature carrier density is demonstrated to increase monotonically upon do**,which is different from previous Hall measurement results. We also observe the evidences of band broadening and exotic changes of high-energy interband transitions caused by do**.Our results provide detailed information about the band structure of Co$_{3-x}$Ni$_x$Sn$_2$S$_2$ at different do** levels, which will help to guide further studies on the chemical tuning of AHE.

Three-dimensional (3D) Weyl semimetal Mn$_3$Sn has attracted tremendous attention due to its great application potential. However, the complex magnetic structures at different temperature intervals make it extremely difficult to unravel the underlying electronic structures of Mn$_3$Sn. Here, we perform temperature-dependent optical spectroscopy measurements on single crystalline Mn$_3$Sn to investigate its charge dynamics. We find that both of the optical reflectivity $R(ω)$ and conductivity $σ_1(ω)$ evolve very smoothly across the magnetic phase transition at $T_M$ = 285 K, where the giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature drops significantly. Furthermore, two linearly increasing segments of $σ_1(ω)$ are observed in the whole temperature range from 300 K to 10 K, indicating that the existence of Weyl fermions is very robust against the magnetic phase transition. In addition, the Weyl points closest to the Fermi level $E_F$ are identified to be located about 101 meV away from $E_F$ at 10 K, and the associated Fermi velocity is about 2.55 $\times 10^7$ cm/s. Our results reveal that the phase transition at $T_M$ only generates subtle modification to the band structure, which helps to further uncover the mechanism of the dramatic change of AHE in Mn$_3$Sn.

HoSbTe was predicted to be a weak topological insulator, whose spin-orbit coupling (SOC) gaps are reported to be as large as hundreds of meV. Utilizing infrared spectroscopy, we find that the compound is of metallic nature from 350 K down to 10 K. Particularly, both of its itinerant carrier density and scattering rate are demonstrated to decrease with temperature cooling, which is responsible for the appearance of a broad hump feature in the temperature dependent resistivity around 200 K. More importantly, we reveal the appearance of a charge density wave (CDW) gap in addition to the SOC related gap. The energy scale of the CDW gap is identified to be 364 meV at 10 K, which shift to 252 meV at 350 K. The coexistence of CDW and SOC gaps in the same compound paves a new avenue to explore more intriguing physics.

We demonstrate spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of amorphous CoTb single layer films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). The switching sustains even the film thickness is above 10 nm, where the critical switching current density keeps almost constant. Without the need of overcoming the strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction caused by the heavy metal, a quite low assistant field of ~20 Oe is sufficient to realize the fully switching. The SOT effective field decreases and undergoes a sign change with the decrease of the Tb-concentration, implying that a combination of the spin Hall effect from both Co and Tb as well as an asymmetric spin current absorption accounts for the SOT switching mechanism. Our findings would advance the use of magnetic materials with bulk PMA for energy-efficient and thermal-stable non-volatile memories, and add a different dimension for understanding the ordering and asymmetry in amorphous thin films.

The S1 (21Ag-) state is an optically dark state of natural and synthetic pi-conjugated materials that can play a critical role in optoelectronic processes such as, energy harvesting, photoprotection and singlet fission. Despite this widespread importance, direct experimental characterisations of the electronic structure of the S1 (21Ag-) wavefunction have remained scarce and uncertain, although advanced theory predicts it to have a rich multi-excitonic character. Here, studying an archetypal polymer, polydiacetylene, and carotenoids, we experimentally demonstrate that S1 (21Ag-) is a superposition state with strong contributions from spin-entangled pairs of triplet excitons (1(TT)). We further show that optical manipulation of the S1 (21Ag-) wavefunction using triplet absorption transitions allows selective projection of the 1(TT) component into a manifold of spatially separated triplet-pairs with lifetimes enhanced by up to one order of magnitude and whose yield is strongly dependent on the level of inter-chromophore coupling. Our results provide a unified picture of 21Ag-states in pi-conjugated materials and open new routes to exploit their dynamics in singlet fission, photobiology and for the generation of entangled (spin-1) particles for molecular quantum technologies.

We present a novel optical transient absorption and reflection microscope based on a diffraction-limited pump pulse in combination with a wide-field probe pulse, for the spatio-temporal investigation of ultrafast population transport in thin films. The microscope achieves a temporal resolution down to 12 fs and simultaneously provides sub-10 nm spatial accuracy. We demonstrate the capabilities of the microscope by revealing an ultrafast excited-state exciton population transport of up to 32 nm in a thin film of pentacene and by tracking the carrier motion in p-doped silicon. The use of few-cycle optical excitation pulses enables impulsive stimulated Raman micro-spectroscopy, which is used for in-situ verification of the chemical identity in the 100 - 2000 cm-1 spectral window. Our methodology bridges the gap between optical microscopy and spectroscopy allowing for the study of ultrafast transport properties down to the nanometer length scale.

Three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs) represent novel states of quantum matters in which surface states are protected by time-reversal symmetry and an inversion occurs between bulk conduction- and valence-bands. However, the bulk-band inversion which is intimately tied to the topologically nontrivial nature of 3D TIs has rarely been investigated by experiments. Besides, 3D massive Dirac fermions with nearly near band dispersions were seldom observed in TIs. Recently, a van der Waals crystal, ZrTe5, was theoretically predicted to be a TI. Here, we report an infrared transmission study of a high-mobility (~33,000 cm$^2$/(Vs)) multilayer ZrTe5 flake at magnetic fields ($B$) up to 35 T. Our observation of a linear relationship between the zero-magnetic-field optical absorption and the photon energy, a bandgap of ~10 meV and a $\sqrt{B}$ dependence of the Landau level (LL) transition energies at low magnetic fields demonstrates 3D massive Dirac fermions with nearly linear band dispersions in this system. More importantly, the reemergence of the intra-LL transitions at magnetic fields higher than 17 T reveals the energy cross between the two zeroth LLs, which reflects the inversion between the bulk conduction- and valence-bands. Our results not only provide spectroscopic evidence for the TI state in ZrTe5 but also open up a new avenue for fundamental studies of Dirac fermions in van der Waals materials.

We report single crystal growth and physical properties characterization of YbFe$_2$Al$_{10}$ compounds. The measurements of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat show different behaviors from previous studies on polycrystal samples. A mixed valent characteristic with moderate mass enhancement is indicated. In particular, the optical spectroscopy measurement reveals formation of multiple hybridization energy gaps which become progressively pronounced at low temperature. The multiple hybridization energy gaps are likely caused by the hybridizations between the flat band from Yb 4$f$ electrons and different bands of conduction electrons.

We perform ultrafast pump-probe measurement on YbInCu$_4$ and find that the expected heavy fermion properties arising from the \emph{c-f} hybridization exist only in a limited temperature range above $T_v$. Below $T_v$, the compound behaves like a normal metal though a prominent hybridization energy gap is still present in infrared measurement. We elaborate that those seemingly controversial phenomena could be well explained by assuming that the Fermi level suddenly shifts up and becomes far away from the flat \emph{f}-electron band as well as the indirect hybridization energy gap in the mixed valence state below $T_v$.

The layered lanthanum silver antimonide LaAgSb$_2$ was known to experience two charge density (CDW) phase transitions, which were proposed recently to be closely related to the newly identified Dirac cone. We present optical spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe measurement on the compound. The development of energy gaps were clearly observed below the phase transition temperatures in optical conductivity, which removes most part of the free carrier spectral weight. Time resolved measurement demonstrated the emergence of strong oscillations upon entering the CDW states, which were illuminated to come from the amplitude mode of CDW collective excitations. The frequencies of them are surprisingly low: only 0.12 THz for the CDW order with higher transition temperature and 0.34 THz for the lower one, which shall be caused by their small modulation wave vectors. Furthermore, the amplitude and relaxation time of photoinduced reflectivity stayed unchanged across the two phase transitions, which might be connected to the extremely low energy scales of amplitude modes.

In this article, we review the charge excitations of heavy fermion compounds probed by infrared spectroscopy. The article is not meant to be a comprehensive survey of experimental investigations. Rather it focuses on the dependence of charge excitations on the hybridization strength. In this context, the infrared properties of the Ce$_m$M$_n$In$_{3m+2n}$ family are discussed in detail since the hybridization strengths differ dramatically in different members despite their similar lattice structures. Investigations on some mixed valent compounds are also presented aiming to elucidate the generic trend on the evolution. In particular, we address the scaling between hybridization energy gap $Δ_{dir}$ and the hybridization strength $\tilde{V}$($\propto\sqrt{WT_K}$) in a wide range of heavy fermions compounds which demonstrates that the periodic Anderson model can generally and quantitatively describe the low-energy charge excitations.

We identify clear and typical hybridization spectral structures at low temperature from the two different spectroscopy probes. However, the strength and related energy scale of the hybridization are much weaker and smaller than that in the superconducting compounds CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIrIn$_5$. The features are more similar to observations on the antiferromagnetic compounds CeIn$_3$ and CeRhIn$_5$ in the same family. The results clearly indicate that the Kondo interaction and hybridizations exist in the antiferromagnetic compounds but with weaker strength.

We present a magneto-infrared spectroscopy study on a newly identified three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal ZrTe$_5$. We observe clear transitions between Landau levels and their further splitting under magnetic field. Both the sequence of transitions and their field dependence follow quantitatively the relation expected for 3D \emph{massless} Dirac fermions. The measurement also reveals an exceptionally low magnetic field needed to drive the compound into its quantum limit, demonstrating that ZrTe$_5$ is an extremely clean system and ideal platform for studying 3D Dirac fermions. The splitting of the Landau levels provides a direct and bulk spectroscopic evidence that a relatively weak magnetic field can produce a sizeable Zeeman effect on the 3D Dirac fermions, which lifts the spin degeneracy of Landau levels. Our analysis indicates that the compound evolves from a Dirac semimetal into a topological line-node semimetal under current magnetic field configuration.

Three dimensional (3D) topological Dirac materials are under intensive study recently. The layered compound ZrTe$_5$ has been suggested to be one of them by transport and ARPES experiments. Here, we perform infrared reflectivity measurement to investigate the underlying physics of this material. The derived optical conductivity exhibits linear increasing with frequency below normal interband transitions, which provides the first optical spectroscopic proof of a 3D Dirac semimetal. Apart from that, the plasma edge shifts dramatically to lower energy upon temperature cooling, which might be associated with the consequence of lattice parameter shrinking. In addition, an extremely sharp peak shows up in the frequency dependent optical conductivity, indicating the presence of a Van Hove singularity in the joint density of state.

RuP single crystals of MnP-type orthorhombic structure were synthesized by the Sn flux method. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the compound experiences two structural phase transitions, which are further confirmed by enormous anomalies shown in temperature-dependent resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Particularly, the resistivity drops monotonically upon temperature cooling below the second transition, indicating that the material shows metallic behavior, in sharp contrast with the insulating ground state of polycrystalline samples. Optical conductivity measurements were also performed in order to unravel the mechanism of these two transitions. The measurement revealed a sudden reconstruction of band structure over a broad energy scale and a significant removal of conducting carriers below the first phase transition, while a charge-density-wave-like energy gap opens below the second phase transition.

The ratio of 2$Δ_{DW}$/$k_B T_{DW}\approx$ 11.9 is considerably larger than the mean-field value based on the weak-coupling BCS theory. At the lowest temperature in the superconducting state, we observed opening of superconducting energy gaps $Δ_1(0) =3.4$ meV and $Δ_2(0)=7.9$ meV. We present an optical spectroscopy study on P-doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$ which experiences a structural phase transition from tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase near 75 K. The measurement reveals a sudden reduction of low frequency spectral weight and emergence of a new feature near 3200 \cm (0.4 eV) in optical conductivity across the transition, indicating an abrupt reconstruction of band structure. The appearance of new feature is related to the interband transition arising from the sinking of hole bands near $Γ$ point below Fermi level in the cT phase, as expected from the density function theory calculations in combination with the dynamical mean field theory. However, the reduction of Drude spectral weight is at variance with those calculations. The measurement also indicates an absence of the abnormal spectral weight transfer at high energy (near 0.5-0.7 eV) in the cT phase, suggesting a suppression of electron correlation effect.

However in this work we present evidences that TbTe$_3$ also possesses more than one CDW order. Aside from the one at 336 K, which was extensively studied and reported to be driven by imperfect Fermi surface nesting with a wave vector $q=(2/7 c^*)$, a new CDW energy gap (260 meV) develops at around 165 K, revealed by both infrared reflectivity spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Single-crystalline KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) are synthesized and investigated by resistivity, susceptibility and optical spectroscopy. It is found that CaCu2As2 exhibits a similar transition to the lattice abrupt collapse transitions discovered in CaFe2(As1-xPx)2 and Ca1-xRexFe2As2 (Re-rare earth element). The resistivity of KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) approximately follows the similar T^2 dependence at low temperature, but the magnetic behaviors vary with different samples. Optical measurement reveals the optical response of CaCu2As2 is not sensitive to the transition at 50 K, with no indication of development of a new energy gap below the transition temperature. Using Drude-Lorentz model, We find that two Drude terms, a coherent one and an incoherent one, can fit the low-energy optical conductivity of KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni) very well. However, in CaCu2As2, which is a sp-band metal, the low-energy optical conductivity can be well described by a coherent Drude term. Lack of the incoherent Drude term in CaCu2As2 may be attributed to the weaker electronic correlation than KFe2As2 and CaT2As2 (T = Fe, Co, Ni). Spectral weight analysis of these samples indicates that the unconventional spectral weight transfer, which is related to Hund's coupling energy J_H, is only observed in iron pnictides, supporting the viewpoint that J_H may be a key clue to seek the mechanism of magnetism and superconductivity in pnictides.
