Neutron diffraction studies of HoFeO$_3$ single crystal were performed under external magnetic fields. The interplay between the external magnetic field, Dzyaloshinsky-Moria antisymmetric exchange and isotropic exchange interactions between Fe and Ho sublattice and inside Fe sublattice provides a rich phase diagram. As the result of the balance of exchange interactions inside crystal and external magnetic field we found 8 different magnetic phases, produced or suppressed by the field.

We have determined the temperature evolution of the spin and orbital moments in the zero magnetization ferromagnet Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$Al$_2$ (x = 0.024) by combining polarized and unpolarized single crystal neutron diffraction data. The sensitivity of the polarized neutron technique has allowed the moment values to be determined with a precision of $\approx 0.1$~\mub. Our results clearly demonstrate that, when magnetised by a field of 8T, the spin and orbital moments in Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$Al$_2$ are oppositely directed so that the net magnetization is very small. Below 60 K the contributions from spin and orbital motions are both about 2\mub\ with that due to orbital motion being slightly larger than that due to spin. Between 60 and 65 K the contributions of each to the magnetization fall rapidly and change sign at \Tcomp\ $\approx 67$K above which the aligned moments recover but with the orbital magnetization still slightly higher than the spin one. These results imply that above \Tcomp\ the small resultant magnetization of the \smion\ ion is oppositely directed to the magnetizing field. It is suggested that this anomaly is due to polarization of conduction electron spin associated with the do** Gd$^{3+}$ ions.

Polarised neutron diffraction measurements have been made on HoFeO$_3$ single crystals magnetised in both the [001] and [100] directions ($Pbnm$ setting). The polarisation dependencies of Bragg reflection intensities were measured both with a high field of H = 9 T parallel to [001] at T = 70 K and with the lower field H = 0.5 T parallel to [100] at T = 5, 15, 25~K. A Fourier projection of magnetization induced parallel to [001], made using the $hk0$ reflections measured in 9~T, indicates that almost all of it is due to alignment of Ho moments. Further analysis of the asymmetries of general reflections in these data showed that although, at 70~K, 9~T applied parallel to [001] hardly perturbs the antiferromagnetic order of the Fe sublattices, it induces significant antiferromagnetic order of the Ho sublattices in the $x\mhyphen y$ plane, with the antiferromagnetic components of moment having the same order of magnitude as the induced ferromagnetic ones. Strong intensity asymmetries measured in the low temperature $Γ_2$ structure with a lower field, 0.5 T $\parallel$ [100] allowed the variation of the ordered components of the Ho and Fe moments to be followed. Their absolute orientations, in the 180\degree\ domain stabilised by the field were determined relative to the distorted perovskite structure,. This relationship fixes the sign of the Dzyalshinski-Moriya (D-M) interaction which leads to the weak ferromagnetism. Our results indicate that the combination of strong y-axis anisotropy of the Ho moments and Ho-Fe exchange interactions breaks the centrosymmetry of the structure and could lead to ferroelectric polarization.

We have investigated the temperature evolution of the magnetic structures of HoFeO$_3$ by single crystal neutron diffraction. The three different magnetic structures found as a function of temperature for \hfo\ are described by the magnetic groups Pb$'$n$'2_1$, Pbn$2_1$ and Pbn$'2_1'$ and are stable in the temperature ranges $\approx$ 600-55~K, 55-37~K and 35$>T>2$~K respectively. In all three the fundamental coupling between the Fe sub-lattices remains the same and only their orientation and the degree of canting away from the ideal axial direction varies. The magnetic polarisation of the Ho sub-lattices in these two higher temperature regions, in which the major components of the Fe moment lie along $x$ and $y$, is very small. The canting of the moments from the axial directions is attributed to the antisymmetric interactions allowed by the crystal symmetry. They include contributions from single ion anisotropy as well as the Dzyaloshinski antisymmetric exchange. In the low temperature phase two further structural transitions are apparent in which the spontaneous magnetisation changes sign with respect to the underlying antiferromagnetic configuration. In this temperature range the antisymmetric exchange energy varies rapidly as the the Ho sub-lattices begin to order. So long as the ordered Ho moments are small the antisymmetric exchange is due only to Fe-Fe interactions, but as the degree of Ho order increases the Fe-Ho interactions take over whilst at the lowest temperatures, when the Ho moments approach saturation the Ho-Ho interactions dominate. The reversals of the spontaneous magnetisation found in this study suggest that in \hfo\ the sums of the Fe-Fe and Ho-Ho antisymmetric interactions have the same sign as one another, but that of the Ho-Fe terms is opposite.

We report on combined neutron and resonant x-ray scattering results, identifying the nature of the spin-orbital ground state and magnetic excitations in LuVO3 as driven by the orbital parameter. In particular, we distinguish between models based on orbital Peierls dimerization, taken as a signature of quantum effects in orbitals, and Jahn-Teller distortions, in favor of the latter. In order to solve this long-standing puzzle, polarized neutron beams were employed as a prerequisite in order to solve details of the magnetic structure, which allowed quantitative intensity-analysis of extended magnetic excitation data sets. The results of this detailed study enabled us to draw definite conclusions about classical vs quantum behavior of orbitals in this system and to discard the previous claims about quantum effects dominating the orbital physics of LuVO3 and similar systems.

The distribution of magnetization around the Fe atom is slightly nonspherical with a shape which is extended along the [0 0 1] direction in the projection. Multipolar refinement results show that the electrons which give rise to the paramagnetic susceptibility are confined to the Fe atoms and their distribution suggests that they occupy 3d t2g-type orbitals with around 66% in those of xz/yz symmetry. A significant polarisation dependence was observed in the intensities of magnetic satellite reflections, propagation vector $ \pv=0.5,0,0.25$ measured with both the [100] and [010] axes parallel to the common polarisation and applied field direction. The intensity asymmetries $A$ observed in sets of orthorhombicly equivalent reflections show systematic relationships which allow the phase relationship between different components of their magnetic interaction vectors to be determined. They fix the orientation relationships between the small $y$ and $z$ moments on the \mnfp\ and \mntp\ sub-lattices and lend support to the structure reported by Kim et al. It was found that that $A(hkl)\ne A(\bar h\bar k\bar l)$ which suggests that there is a small modulation of the nuclear structure which has the same wave-vector as the magnetic modulation leading to a small nuclear structure factor for the satellite reflections. The differences $A(hkl)- A(\bar h\bar k\bar l)$ observed indicate shifts in the atomic positions of order 0.005 Å.

Because of the axiality of the crystal structure below $T_\textrm{c}$ = 190 K, helicity and triangular chirality are symmetric-exchange coupled, explaining the onset of the ferroelectricity in this proper-screw magnetic structure - a mechanism that can be generalised to other systems with "ferroaxial" distortions in the crystal structure. With an applied electric field we demonstrate control of the chiralities in both structural domains simultaneously.

We report a polarised neutron study of the magnetic structures and phase trasitions in \gdc\ in low magnetic fields. These experiments have been complemented by integrated intensity measurements with unpolarised neutrons in zero field. Polarised neutron flip** ratio measurements have been made with magnetic fields $H = 0.05$, 0.10 and 0.5 T in the temperature range 4-20 K. These have enabled us to deduce that the anomalous temperature behaviour of the coherent magnetic scattering from the Cu sublattice, which shows sharp intensity minima at \Tcn1 $\approx 18$K and \Tcn2 $\approx 8$ K, is due to cross-overs in the sign of the interaction between strongly coupled, weakly ferromagnetic, CuO$_2$ layers. At \Tcn1\ the coupling changes from ferromagnetic to anti-ferromagnetic and long-range order between layers is temporarily lost. \Tcn2\ is the temperature at which the Gd moments order and a further reorganisation of the interlayer order takes place. The weak ferromagnetism of the CuO layers is found to be due to a small rotation of the Cu moments in the same direction as that in which their coordinating oxygen squares rotate in the tetragonal to orthorhombic distortion of the crystal structure. Further analysis of the flip** ratio measurements has enabled us to model the magnetic structures of the zero-field and the field-induced phases of Gd$_2$CuO$_4$.

We have determined the spatial distribution of the magnetisation induced by a field of 9 T in the tetragonal phase of BaFe2As2 using polarised neutron diffraction. Magnetic structure factors derived from the polarisation dependence of the intensities of Bragg reflections were used to make a maximum entropy reconstruction of the distribution projected on the 110 plane. The reconstruction shows clearly that the magnetisation is confined to the region around the iron atoms and that there is no significant magnetisation associated with either the As or Ba atoms. The distribution of magnetisation around the Fe atom is significantly non-spherical with a shape which is extended in the <111> directions in the projection. These results show that the electrons which give rise to the paramagnetic susceptibility are confined to the Fe atoms their distribution suggests that they occupy 3d t_2g type orbitals with about 60% in those of xy symmetry.

Magnetic and ferroelectric properties of layered geometrically frustrated cluster compound FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br were investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction and dielectric measurements. Incommensurate amplitude modulated magnetic order with the wave vector $\bf{q}$=($\half$, 0.463, 0) develops below $T_N=10.6(2) {\rm K}$. Simultaneously, a ferroelectric order with the spontaneous polarization perpendicular to ${\bf q}$ and to Fe$^{3+}$ magnetic moments emerges. The observed ferroelectricity and extraordinary linear scaling of the ferroelectric and magnetic order parameter are provoked by the striction of the intercluster Fe-O-Te-O-Fe bridges leading to the shift of Te$^{4+}$ ions and polarization of their lone-pair electrons.

Two long-range magnetic ordering transitions occur at T$_{N1}$=22K and T$_{N2}$=15K. Both magnetic structures are incommensurate. That stable below T$_{N1}$ is collinear with amplitude modulated moments whereas below T$_{N2}$ the arrangement is non-collinear with a helicoidal modulation. Below T$_{N2}$, \fevo becomes weakly ferroelectric coincidentally with the loss of the collinearity of the magnetic structure. We conclude that \fevo provides another example of frustrated spiral magnet similar to the classical TbMnO$_3$ compound. However, \fevo has quenched orbital moments and a particular structure clarifying the respective role of anisotropy and magnetic frustration in this type of multiferroic materials.

The susceptibility measurements show that the erbium magnetic moments are aligned parallel to the c-axis indicating strong single-ion anisotropy. Spherical neutron polarimetry demonstrates the presence of two unequally populated chirality domains in ErMn$_2$O$_5$ single crystals. Precise magnetic structures of RMn2O5, with R= Y, Ho, Bi in the commensurate/ferroelectric regime, have been determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction. For each system, the integrated intensities of a large number of independent magnetic Bragg reflections have been measured, allowing unconstrained least-squares refinement of the structures. The analysis confirms the previously reported magnetic configuration in the ab-plane, in particular the existence of zig-zag antiferromagnetic chains. For the Y and Ho compounds additional weak magnetic components parallel to the c-axis were detected which are modulated in phase quadrature with the a-b components. This component is extremely small in the BiMn2O5 sample, therefore supporting symmetric exchange as the principal mechanism inducing ferroelectricity. For HoMn2O5, a magnetic ordering of the Ho moments was observed, which is consistent with a super-exchange interaction through the oxygens. For all three compounds, the point symmetry in the magnetically ordered state is m2m, allowing the polar b-axis found experimentally.

Measurements were made at 100 K, near to the spin-state transition, at 1.5 K and at 285 K. The data give evidence for a transition from the ground singlet state (S = 0) to the excited triplet intermediate spin state (S = 1). The energy of K estimated f…

The magnetic moment induced by an external magnetic field of 5.8 T on the Co3+ ions in LaCoO3 has been measured by polarized neutron diffraction. Measurements were made at 100 K, near to the spin-state transition, at 1.5 K and at 285 K. The data give evidence for a transition from the ground singlet state (S = 0) to the excited triplet intermediate spin state (S = 1). The energy of K estimated for the high-spin (S = 2) state, is too high to contribute significantly even at T = 285 K. There is evidence for a small negative covalent spin density associated with the oxygen ligands amounting to about one fifth of the aligned Co3+ moment at all three temperatures.

Neutron scattering studies on powder and single crystals have provided new evidences for unconventional magnetism in Cu2Te2O5Cl2. The compound is built from tetrahedral clusters of S=1/2 Cu2+ spins located on a tetragonal lattice. Magnetic ordering, emerging at TN=18.2 K, leads to a very complex multi-domain, most likely degenerate, ground state, which is characterized by an incommensurate (ICM) wave vector k ~ [0.15, 0.42,1/2]. The Cu2+ ions carry a magnetic moment of 0.67(1) mB/ Cu2+ at 1.5 K and form a four helices spin arrangement with two canted pairs within the tetrahedra. A domain redistribution is observed when a magnetic field is applied in the tetragonal plane (Hc≈0.5 T), but not for H||c up to 4 T. The excitation spectrum is characterized by two well-defined modes, one completely dispersionless at 6.0 meV, the other strongly dispersing to a gap of 2 meV. The reason for such complex ground state and spin excitations may be geometrical frustration of the Cu2+ spins within the tetrahedra, intra- and inter-tetrahedral couplings having similar strengths and strong Dzyaloshinski-Moriya anisotropy. Candidates for the dominant intra- and inter-tetrahedral interactions are proposed.

Abstract:
In the ferromagnetic metallic state of the colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7, the spin density distribution is essentially in agreement with the standard picture in which the unpaired electrons occupy the three t2g orbitals, dxy, dyz, and dxz. However we find a small spin density ~4% of the total Mn spin) on the apical O(2) oxygen atom at both 100 K and 220 K and we sugge…

However we find a small spin density ~4% of the total Mn spin) on the apical O(2) oxygen atom at both 100 K and 220 K and we suggest that this is due to covalency effects. Surprisingly we find no evidence of spin on the other apical oxygen O(1) suggesting that the Mn eg electron distribution along the c-axis is highly anisotropic.
