Strongly correlated system with competing ground states are often poised close to the quantum critical point. External perturbations such as pressure, strain, electric field, and chemical do** can stabilise its ground state with exotic physical properties. Cr-do** is the lone exception which enhances the Curie-temperature in one of such correlated system SrRuO$_3$. To find the origin of $T_C$ enhancement, we investigate temperature-dependent structure, spectroscopic, magnetic and magnetotransport properties in SrRu$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_3$. Cr-do** squeezes the unit cell volume which effectively enhances the stretching octahedral distortion by nearly five times than pure SrRuO$_3$. The Curie temperature increment by $\sim$ 22 K for x = 0.15 is found to be intertwined with the structural-modulation. Temperature-dependent Neutron diffraction analysis indicate that the unit cell volume minima coincide exactly with the enhanced ferromagnetic ordering ($\sim$ 190 K). Further analysis reveals that the effect of Cr-do** not only freezes the octahedral tilt below 100 K but also suppresses the complex magnetism responsible for exchange bias and topological hall effect in SrRuO$_3$. The spectroscopic measurements find a reduction of itinerancy of d-electrons with Cr-do**. The magnetotransport measurements portray an evolution from itinerant to localised ferromagnetism.

We investigate crystal structure and magnetic properties including spin relaxation and magnetocaloric effect in NASICON type NaFe$_2$PO$_4$(SO$_4$)$_2$ sample. The Rietveld refinement of x-ray and neutron diffraction patterns show a rhombohedral crystal structure with the R$\bar{3}$c space group. The core-level spectra confirm the desired oxidation state of constituent elements. The {\it dc}--magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) behavior in zero field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) modes show the ordering temperature $\approx$50~K. Interestingly, the analysis of temperature dependent neutron diffraction patterns reveal an A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with the ordered moment of 3.8 $μ_{B}$/Fe$^{3+}$ at 5~K, and a magnetostriction below $T_{\rm N}=$ 50~K. Further, the peak position in the {\it ac}--$χ$ is found to be invariant with the excitation frequency supporting the notion of dominating AFM transition. Also, the unsaturated isothermal magnetization curve supports the AFM ordering of the moments; however, the observed coercivity suggests the presence of weak ferromagnetic (FM) correlations at 5~K. On the other hand, a clear bifurcation between ZFC and FC curves of {\it dc}--$χ$ and the observed decrease in peak height of {\it ac}--$χ$ with frequency suggest for the complex magnetic interactions. The spin relaxation behavior in thermo-remanent magnetization and aging measurements indicate the glassy states at 5~K. Moreover, the Arrott plots and magnetocaloric analysis reveal the AFM--FM interactions in the sample at lower temperatures.

Spin systems with honeycomb structures have recently attracted a great deal of attention in connection with the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state (QSL) predicted theoretically. One possible Kitaev QSL candidate is Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ realizing a honeycomb lattice of pseudo-spin-1/2. Field-dependent single-crystal neutron diffraction technique allows us to determine the microscopic spin-spin correlations across the field induced phase transitions for H//a and H//a* in plane field directions. Our results reveal phase transitions, initially to a canted zigzag antiferromagnetic state at approximately 60 kOe, followed by a possible transition to a partially polarized state over the range of 90-120 kOe, and finally to a field-induced fully polarized state above 120 kOe. We observe distinct field dependencies of the magnetic peak intensities for H//a and H//a*. In addition, low-temperature electron spin resonance in magnetic fields H//c yields a complete softening for one of the antiferromagnetic resonances at ~ 40 kOe, revealing a field-induced phase transition. The present work, thus, provides new insights into the field evolution of the important Kitaev-Heisenberg spin system Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$.

The engineering of surface morphology and structure of the thin film is one of the essential technological assets for regulating the physical properties and functionalities of thin film-based devices. This study investigates the evolution of surface structure and magnetic anisotropy in epitaxially grown ultrathin Fe films on MgO (001) substrates subjected to multiple cycles of ion beam erosion (IBE) after growth. Ultrathin Fe film grows in 3D island mode and exhibits intrinsic fourfold magnetic anisotropy. After a few cycles of IBE, the film displays an induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that leads to a split in the hysteresis loop. In addition, clear and conclusive evidence of IBE mediated (2x2) reconstruction of the Fe surface has been observed. We also demonstrate that thermal annealing can reversibly tune the induced UMA and surface reconstruction. The feasibility of the IBE technique by properly selecting ion beam parameters for modification of surface structure has been highlighted apart from conventional methods of tailoring the morphology for tuning of UMA. Thus, the present work paves a way to explore the IBE-induced self-assembling phenomena further.

Magnetic anisotropy is a key parameter of magnetic materials as it decides the response in the presence of an external magnetic field. The artificial tailoring of magnetic anisotropy by manipulating surface and interface morphology is attracting widespread interest for its application in spintronic and magnetic memory devices. In this perspective, the primary focus of this thesis has been inducing and tailoring magnetic anisotropy in thin film-based systems via the engineering of structure and surface/interfacial morphology. For this purpose, instead of multistep, expensive lithographic techniques, we have utilized low-energy IBE as a handy, cost-effective, and useful tool for producing magnetic nanostructures and tailoring its surface structure, morphology and magnetic anisotropy. Furthermore, we have also proposed various new and unconventional methods (oblique angle deposition on the rippled substrate, sequential deposition-erosion) for enhancement of UMA and proved its effectiveness via experiments. We have performed most of the present thesis work in-situ utilizing a UHV chamber to get genuine characteristics and understand their interdependencies. However, advanced synchrotron-based techniques such as GISAXS and NFS were also utilized to complement the in-situ observations.

We report the nature of magnetic structure, microscopic spin-spin correlations and their dependence on the underlying crystal structure of the geometrically frustrated layered spin-3/2 maple-leaf-lattice (MLL) antiferromagnet Na2Mn3O7 by a comprehensive neutron diffraction study. Crystal structural studies by x-ray and neutron diffractions reveal that the MLL layers (constituted by Mn3O72- units) are well separated by non-magnetic Na layers. The studies also conclude the presence of stacking faults (in-plane sliding of magnetic MLL layers) as well as a distortion in the MLL of Mn4+. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction data yield a short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below ~ 100 K without a long-range magnetic ordering down to 1.5 K. The analysis of the diffuse magnetic neutron scattering patterns by reverse Monte Carlo method reveals 2D spin-spin correlations within the MLL layers. Additionally, we establish a relation between the correlation length of the short-range magnetic ordering with the stacking faults through a varying synthesis condition. The present study, therefore, explores a microscopic picture of the crystal- and spin-structures, as well as their correlation, hence, provides an experimental insight of the magnetic ordering in a MLL AFM. Further, we have outlined the formation of several 2D frustrated lattice geometry having triangular plaquettes, including the MLL, by crystal engineering of the triangular lattice and their role on the stabilization of multiple novel chiral spin states which opens up a door for study of novel chiral spin states.

Oblique/normal sequential deposition technique is used to create Co based unique multilayer structure [Co-oblique(4.4nm)/Co-normal (4.2 nm)]x10, where each Co-oblique layer is deposited at an oblique angle of 75deg, to induce large in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA). Compared to the previous ripple, stress and oblique angle deposition (OAD) related studies on Cobalt in literature, one-order higher UMA with the easy axis of magnetization along the projection of the tilted nano-columns in the multilayer plane is observed. The multilayer retains magnetic anisotropy even after annealing at 450C. The in-plane UMA in this multilayer is found to be the combination of shape, and magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA) confirmed by the temperature-dependent grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) measurements. The crystalline texturing of hcp Co in the multilayer minimizes spin-orbit coupling energy along the column direction, which couples with the shape anisotropy energies and results in preferential orientation of the easy magnetic axis along the projection of the columns in the multilayer plane. Reduction in UMA after annealing is attributed to diffusion/merging of columns and annihilating crystallographic texturing. The obtained one-order high UMA demonstrates the potential application of the unique structure engineering technique, which may have far-reaching advantages in magnetic thin films/multilayers and spintronic devices.

Growth of Co film on SiO2 substrates with the surface roughness of 0.5 nm and 1.6 nm has been studied in situ using the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and four probe resistivity measurements. In-situ measurements jointly suggest the Volmer-Weber growth process and proceed via a nonmagnetic, superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic phase formation on both substrates. Islands are found to coalesce at film thicknesses of 0.6 nm and at 1.5 nm with continuous film formation around film thicknesses of 1.5 nm and 3.0 nm for smooth and rough substrates, respectively. Ferromagnetic long-range ordering i.e., the appearance of a magnetic hysteresis loop in both films, is observed just after coalescing stage. Observed azimuthal angular dependence of coercivity confirmed the presence of a weak uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in both films, whereas the difference in uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with substrate roughness is interpreted in terms of the combined effect of domain wall pinning and internal stresses in the films. The origin of much higher UMA in the case of the Co film deposited on a ripple-patterned substrate of similar root means square roughness is attributed to the modified long-range dipolar stray fields on the surface.

Understanding exotic forms of magnetism in quantum spin systems is an emergent topic of modern condensed matter physics. Quantum dynamics can be described by particle-like carriers of information, known-as quasiparticles that appear from the collective behaviour of the underlying system. Spinon excitations, governing the excitations of quantum spin-systems, have been accurately calculated and precisely verified experimentally for the antiferromagnetic chain model. However, identification and characterization of novel quasiparticles emerging from the topological excitations of the spin system having periodic exchange interactions are yet to be obtained. Here, we report the identification of emergent composite excitations of the novel quasiparticles doublons and quartons in spin-1/2 trimer-chain antiferromagnet Na2Cu3Ge4O12 (having periodic intrachain exchange interactions J1-J1-J2) and its topologically protected quantum 1/3 magnetization-plateau state. The artificial tailoring of magnetic anisotropy by manipulation of interfacial morphology and film structure are of fundamental interest from application point of view in spintronic and magnetic memory devices. This letter reports an approach of engineering and enhancing the strength of oblique incidence ion beam erosion (IBE) induced in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) by simultaneous modification of film morphology as well as film texture. To meet this objective, Cobalt film and Si substrate have been taken as a model system. Unlike conventional post growth IBE of film, we direct our effort to the sequential deposition and subsequent IBE of the film. Detailed in-situ investigation insights that the film grows in highly biaxially textured polycrystalline state with formation of nanometric surface ripples. The film also exhibits pronounced UMA with easy axis oriented parallel to the surface ripple direction. Remarkably, the induced UMA is about one order of magnitude larger than the reported similar kind of earlier studies. The possibility of imposing in-plane crystallographic texture giving rise to magneto-crystalline anisotropy, along with long-range dipolar interaction throughout ripple crests enhances the strength of the UMA. The present findings can be further extended to systems characterized by different crystallographic structure and magnetic properties and show the general applicability of the present method.

A detailed analysis of the magnetic properties of a vanthoffite type mineral Na6Mn(SO4)4 basedon dc magnetization, low temperature neutron powder diffraction and theoretical calculations is reported. The mineral crystallizes in a monoclinic system with space group P21/c, where MnO6 octahedra are linked via SO4 tetrahedra. This gives rise to super-exchange interaction between two Mn2+ ions mediated by two nonmagnetic bridging anions and leads to an antiferromagnetic ordering below 3 K. The magnetic structure derived from neutron powder diffraction at 1.7 K depicts an antiferromagnetic spin arrangement in the bc plane of the crystal. The magnetic properties are modelled by numerical calculations using exact diagonalization technique, which fits the experimental results and provides antiferromagnetic ground state of Na6Mn(SO4)4.

The microscopic spin-spin correlations in the 2D layered spin-1 honeycomb lattice compound Na2Ni2TeO6 have been investigated by neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. The honeycomb lattice of spin-1 Ni2+ ions, within the crystallographic ab planes, are well separated along the c axis by an intermediate Na layer whose crystal structure contains chiral nuclear density distributions of Na ions. The chirality of the alternating Na layers is opposite. Such alternating chirality of the Na layer dictates the magnetic periodicity along the c axis where an up-up-down-down spin arrangement of the in-plane zigzag AFM structure is found. Besides, the above described commensurate (CM) zigzag AFM order state is found to coexist with an incommensurate (ICM) AFM state below the TN ~ 27.5 K. The ICM state is found to appear at much higher temperature ~ 50 K and persists down to lowest measured temperature of 1.7 K. Our reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) analysis divulges a two dimensional (2D) magnetic correlations (within the ab plane) of the ICM AFM state over the entire temperature range 1.7-50 K. Further, the spin-Hamiltonian has been determined by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent linear spin-wave theory analysis which reveals the presence of competing inplane exchange interactions up to 3 rd nearest neighbours consistent with the zigzag AFM ground state, and weak interplanar interaction as well as a weak single-ion-anisotropy. The values of the exchange constants yield that Na2Ni2TeO6 is situated well inside the zigzag AFM phase (spans over a wide ranges of J2/J1 and J3/J1 values) in the theoretical phase diagram. The present study, thus, provides a detailed microscopic understanding of the magnetic correlations and divulges the intertwining magneto-structural correlations.

In search of the potential cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries and to understand the diffusion kinetics, we report the detailed analysis of electrochemical investigation of honeycomb structured Na$_{2}$Ni$_{2}$TeO$_{6}$ material using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT). We found the discharge capacities of 82 and 77 mAhg$^{-1}$ at 0.05~C and 0.1~C current rates, respectively, and the mid-working potential of $\approx$3.9~V at 1~C and high capacity retention of 80\% after 500 cycles at 0.5~C as well as excellent rate capability. The analysis of CV data at different scan rates reveals the pseudo-capacitive mechanism of sodium-ion storage. Interestingly, the {\it in-situ} EIS measurements show a systematic change in the charge-transfer resistance at different charge/discharge stages as well as after different number of cycles. The diffusion coefficient extracted using CV, EIS and GITT lies mainly in the range of 10$^{-10}$ to 10$^{-12}$ cm$^{2}$s$^{-1}$ and the de-insertion/insertion of Na$^+$-ion concentration during electrochemical cycling is consistent with the ratio of Ni$^{3+}$/Ni$^{2+}$ valence state determined by photoemission study. Moreover, the post-cyclic results of retrieved active material show very stable structure and morphology even after various charge-discharge cycles. Our detailed electrochemical investigation and diffusion kinetics studies establish the material as a high working potential and long life electrode for sodium-ion batteries.

The ionic conduction properties of the technologically important two-dimensional (2D) layered battery material Na2Mn3O7, with exceptional small-voltage hysteresis between charge and discharge curves, have been investigated as a function of temperature and frequency by an impedance spectroscopy. The detailed analyses of the impedance data in the form of dc-conductivity, ac-conductivity, electrical modulus, dielectric constant and complex polarizability reveal a long-range Na-ionic conductivity with negligible contribution from a local dipole relaxation. A significant enhancement (~10^4 times) of the Na-ion conductivity has been found with the increasing temperature from 353 K to 713 K. The temperature dependent conductivity reveals thermally activated conduction process with activation energies of 0.161 and 0.377 eV over the two temperature regions of 383-518 K and 518-713 K, respectively. AC conductivity study reveals a long-range hop** process for the conduction of charge carriers with a sharp increase of the hop** range at 518 K. The scaling study of the ac-conductivity reveals that the frequency-activated conductivity (above 10^4 Hz at 353 K) is mainly controlled by the critical frequency that increases with the increasing temperature. The Na-ion conduction in Na2Mn3O7 occurs predominantly by a correlated barrier hop** process. Besides, a correlation between ionic conduction and crystal structure has been established by x-ray and neutron diffraction study. We have further shown that the conductivity of Na2Mn3O7 can be enhanced by reduction of the stacking faults in the crystal structure. Our study facilitates the understanding of the microscopic ionic conduction mechanism in the highly efficient 2D battery material Na2Mn3O7 having high energy storage capacity and high structural stability, paving way for the discovery of materials for battery applications.

The $S=1$ Haldane state is constructed from a product of local singlet dimers in the bulk and topological states at the edges of a chain. It is a fundamental representative of topological quantum matter. Its well-known representative, the quasi-one-dimensional SrNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ shows both conventional as well as unconventional magnetic Raman scattering. The former is observed as one- and two-triplet excitations with small linewidths and energies corresponding to the Haldane gap $Δ_H$ and the exchange coupling $J_c$ along the chain, respectively. Well-defined magnetic quasiparticles are assumed to be stabilized by interchain interactions and uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. Unconventional scattering exists as broad continua of scattering with an intensity $I(T)$ that shows a mixed bosonic / fermionic statistic. Such a mixed statistic has also been observed in Kitaev spin liquids and could point to a non-Abelian symmetry. As the ground state in the bulk of SrNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ is topologically trivial, we suggest its fractionalization to be due to light-induced interchain exchange processes. These processes are supposed to be enhanced due to a proximity to an Ising ordered state with a quantum critical point. A comparison with SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, the $S=1/2$ analogue to our title compound, supports these statements.

The Sr$_2$FeIrO$_6$ is an interesting member in this family with ionic distribution of Fe$^{3+}$ (3$d^5$) and Ir$^{5+}$ (5$d^4$) where the later is believed to be nonmagnetic under the picture of strong SOC. Here, we report detailed investigation of structural, magnetic and electronic transport properties along with electronic structure calculations in (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$)$_2$FeIrO$_6$ series with $x$ from 0 to 1. While the basic interactions such as, $U$ and SOC are unlikely to be modified but a structural modification is expected due to ionic size difference between Sr$^{2+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$ which would influence other properties such as crystal field effect and band widths. While a nonmonotonic changes in lattice parameters are observed across the series, the spectroscopic investigations reveal that 3+/5+ charge state of Fe/Ir continue till end of the series. An analysis of magnetic data suggests similar nonmonotonic evolution of magnetic parameters with do**. Temperature dependent crystal structure as well as low temperature (5 K) magnetic structure have been determined from neutron powder diffraction measurements. The whole series shows insulating behavior. The electronic structure calculations show, SOC enhanced, a noncollinear antiferromagnetic and Mott-type insulating state is the stable ground state for present series with a substantial amount of orbital moment, but less than the spin magnetic moment, at the Ir site and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The obtained results imply that the Ca$^{2+}$ has large influence on the magnetic and transport properties, further showing a large agreement between experimental results as well as theoretical calculations.

Na-ion conduction, and correlations between Na-ion conduction pathways and crystal structure have been investigated as a function of temperature in the layered battery material Na2Ni2TeO6 by impedance spectroscopy and neutron diffraction, respectively. The impedance data reveal an ionic conductivity 2x10-4 S/m at 323 K which strongly enhances with increasing temperature and attains a high value of ~ 0.03 S/m at 423 K. The temperature dependent conductivity data show an Arrhenius type behavior with average activation energy (Ea) of ~ 0.58(3) eV for T > 383 K. By employing soft-bond valence sum analysis of the neutron diffraction patterns we experimentally demonstrate the site-specific Na-ion conductions, through visualization of microscopic sodium-ion conduction pathways, and verify the recent theoretical results of Molecular dynamic simulation. Our results reveal two-dimensional Na-ion conduction pathways that are confined within the ab planes of Na layers. Crystal structural study indicates that the layered structure involving Na ion layers is responsible for high ionic conductivity, and the local crystallographic environment of Na ion sites is responsible for site-specific conductivity. Our study further reveals that up to 500 K, the ionic conduction is governed by the Na ions located at the Na1 and Na2 sites, whereas, all the Na ions located at the three Na-sites contribute to the conduction process above 500 K. Our neutron diffraction study also establishes that the crystal structure of Na2Ni2TeO6 is stable at least up to 725 K (the highest measured temperature), however, with an anisotropic thermal expansion (c/a ~ 3).

Magnetic excitations and the spin Hamiltonian of the spin-1 J1-J1-J2 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Experimental data reveal gapped dispersive spin wave excitations in the 3D long-range ordered magnetic state (TC = 16 K), and gapless magnetic excitations above the TC. Simulated magnetic excitations, by using the linear spin wave theory, for a model of coupled trimer spin-chains provide a good description of the observed experimental data. The analysis reveals both ferromagnetic J1 and J2 interactions within the chains, and an antiferromagnetic interchain interaction J3 between chains. The strengths of the J1 and J2 are found to be closer (J2/J1 ~ 0.81), and J3 is determined to be weaker (J3/ J1 ~ 0.69), which is consistent with the spin chain type crystal structure. Presence of a weak single-ion-anisotropy (D/J=0.19) is also revealed. The strengths and signs of exchange interactions explain why the 1/3 magnetization is absent in the studied spin-1 compound CaNi3P4O14 in contrast to its S= 5/2 counterpart Mn based isostructural compound. The signs of the exchange interactions are in agreement with that obtained from the reported DFT calculations, whereas, their strengths are found to be significantly different. The relatively strong value of the J3 in CaNi3P4O14 gives a conventional 3D type magnetic ordering below the TC, however, retains its 1D character above the TC. The present experimental study also reveals a sharp change of single-ion anisotropy across the TC indicating that the stability of the 3D magnetic ordering in CaNi3P4O14 is ascribed to the local magnetic anisotropy in addition to interchain interactions. The present study divulges the importance of full knowledge of the exchange interactions in trimer spin chain compounds to understand their exotic magnetic properties, such as 1/3 magnetization plateau.

Complex bound states of magnetic excitations, known as Bethe string, were predicted almost a century ago to exist in one-dimensional quantum magnets 1. The dispersions of the string states have so far remained the subject of intensive theoretical studies 2-7. By performing neutron scattering experiments on the one-dimensional Heisenberg-Ising antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8 in high longitudinal magnetic fields, we reveal in detail the dispersion relations of the string states over the full Brillouin zone, as well as their magnetic field dependences. Furthermore the characteristic energy, the scattering intensity and linewidth of the observed string states exhibit excellent agreement with our precise Bethe Ansatz calculations. Our results establish the important role of string states in the quantum spin dynamics of one-dimensional systems, and will invoke studies of their dynamical properties in more general many-body systems.

Conventional Paramagnetism - a state with finite magnetic moment per ion sans long range magnetic ordering, but with lowering temperature the moment on each ion picks up a particular direction, breaking rotational symmetry, and results into long range magnetic ordering. However, in systems with competing multiple degrees of freedom this conventional notion may easily breaks and results into short range correlation much above the global magnetic transition temperature. La2CuIrO6 with complex interplay of spins (s =1/2) on Cu site and pseudo-spin (j =1/2) on Ir site owing to strong spin-orbit coupling provides fertile ground to observe such correlated phenomena. By a comprehensive temperature dependent Raman study, we have shown the presence of such a correlated paramagnetic state in La2CuIrO6 much above the long range magnetic ordering temperature (TN ). Our observation of strong interactions of phonons, associated with Cu/Ir octahedra, with underlying magnetic degrees of freedom mirrored in the observed Fano asymmetry, which remarkably persists as high as ~ 3.5TN clearly signals the existence of correlated paramagnetism hence broken rotational symmetry. Our detailed analysis also reveals anomalous changes in the self-energy parameters of the phonon modes, i.e. mode frequencies and linewidth, below TN, providing a useful gauge for monitoring the strong coupling between phonons and magnetic degrees of freedom.

Exchange bias (EB) as large as ~5.5 kOe is observed in SrLaCo0.5Mn0.5O4 which is the highest ever found in any layered transition metal oxides including Ruddlesden-Popper series. Neutron diffraction measurement rules out long-range magnetic ordering and together with dc magnetic measurements suggest formation of short-range magnetic domains. AC magnetic susceptibility, magnetic memory effect and magnetic training effect confirm the system to be a cluster spin glass. By carrying out density functional calculations on several model configurations, we propose that EB is originated at the boundary between Mn-rich antiferromagnetic and Co-rich ferromagnetic domains at the sub-nanoscale. Reversal of magnetization axis on the Co-side alters the magnetic coupling between the interfacial Mn and Co spins which leads to EB. Our analysis infers that the presence of competing magnetic interactions is sufficient to induce exchange bias and thereby a wide range of materials exhibiting giant EB can be engineered for designing novel magnetic memory devices.

Magnetic properties and magnetic structure of the Ba$_{2}$Mn(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ antiferromagnet featuring frustrated zigzag chains of $S=\frac{5}{2}$ Mn$^{2+}$ ions are reported based on neutron diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, as well as temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the magnetization and specific heat. A magnetic transition at $T_N\simeq 5$\,K marks the onset of the antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector ${\mathbf k} = (\frac12\, 0\, \frac12)$ and ordered moment of $4.33\pm0.08~μ_B$/Mn$^{2+}$ at 1.5\,K, pointing along the $c$ direction. Direction of the magnetic moment is chosen by the single-ion anisotropy, which is relatively weak compared to the isostructural Ni$^{2+}$ compound. Geometrical frustration has strong impact on thermodynamic properties of Ba$_2$Mn(PO$_4)_2$, but manifestations of the frustration are different from those in Ba$_2$Ni(PO$_4)_2$, where frustration by isotropic exchange couplings is minor, yet strong and competing single-ion anisotropies are present. A spin-flop transition is observed around 2.5\,T. The evaluation of the magnetic structure from the ground state via the spin-flop state to the field-polarized ferromagnetic state has been revealed by a comprehensive neutron diffraction study as a function of magnetic field below $T_N$. Finally, a magnetic phase diagram in the $H-T$ plane is obtained.

Among multifunctional double perovskite oxides, La2NiMnO6 has recently drawn significant attention due to its importance both in terms of understanding of fundamental physics and potential for device applications. The relative alteration in Ni:Mn ratio strongly influences the structural, magnetic and electrical properties of La2NiMnO6. In the present study, La2Ni1.5Mn0.5O6 sample with Ni:Mn = 3:1 ratio has been prepared using sol-gel method and modifications of the above physical properties from that of a stiochiometric sample of La2NiMnO6 are discussed. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction data shows that La2Ni1.5Mn0.5O6 samples belong to a major monoclinic structural phase (P21/n), with partially disordered arrangement of Ni and Mn ions. Magnetic characterization and X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis reveal ferromagnetic ordering around 260 K between Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions while spin glass like behavior is revealed at ~45 K. Semiconducting nature of the sample was confirmed from temperature dependent resistivity measurements as well as from the I-V characteristics measured at room temperature.

Almost one century ago, string states - complex bound states (Wellenkomplexe) of magnetic excitations - have been predicted to exist in one-dimensional quantum magnets and since then become a subject of intensive theoretical study. However, experimental realization and identification of string states in condensed-matter systems remains an unsolved challenge up to date. Here we use high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy to identify string states in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising chain SrCo2V2O8 in strong longitudinal magnetic fields. We observe complex bound states (strings) and fractional magnetic excitations (psinons and antipsinons) in the field-induced critical regime, which are precisely described by the Bethe ansatz. Our study reveals that two-string and three-string states govern the quantum spin dynamics close to the quantum criticality, while the fractional excitations are dominant at low energies, reflecting the antiferromagnetic quantum fluctuations.

Confinement is a process by which particles with fractional quantum numbers bind together to form quasiparticles with integer quantum numbers. The constituent particles are confined by an attractive interaction whose strength increases with increasing particle separation and as a consequence, individual particles are not found in isolation. This phenomenon is well known in particle physics where quarks are confined in baryons and mesons. An analogous phenomenon occurs in certain magnetic insulators; weakly coupled chains of spins S=1/2. The collective excitations in these systems is spinons (S=1/2). At low temperatures weak coupling between chains can induce an attractive interaction between pairs of spinons that increases with their separation and thus leads to confinement. In this paper, we employ inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the spinon confinement in the quasi-1D S=1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8. Spinon excitations are observed above TN in quantitative agreement with established theory. Below TN the pairs of spinons are confined and two sequences of meson-like bound states with longitudinal and transverse polarizations are observed. Several theoretical approaches are used to explain the data. A new theoretical technique based on Tangent-space Matrix Product States gives a very complete description of the data and provides good agreement not only with the energies of the bound modes but also with their intensities. We also successfully explained the effect of temperature on the excitations including the experimentally observed thermally induced resonance between longitudinal modes below TN ,and the transitions between thermally excited spinon states above TN. In summary, our work establishes SrCo2V2O8 as a beautiful paradigm for spinon confinement in a quasi-1D quantum magnet and provides a comprehensive picture of this process.

Below ~113 K, short-range spin-spin correlations occur within the Cu2+ sublattice. With decreasing temperature, the Ir4+ sublattice progressively involves in the correlation process. Below T = 74 K, the magnetic sublattices of Cu (spin s = 1/2) and Ir (pseudospin j = 1/2) in La2CuIrO6 are strongly coupled and exhibit an antiferromagnetic phase transition into a non-collinear magnetic structure accompanied by a small uncompensated transverse moment. A weak anomaly in ac-susceptibility as well as in the NMR and μSR spin lattice relaxation rates at 54 K is interpreted as a cooperative ordering of the transverse moments which is influenced by the strong spin-orbit coupled 5d ion Ir4+. We argue that the rich magnetic behaviour observed in La2CuIrO6 is related to complex magnetic interactions between the strongly correlated spin-only 3d ions with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d transition ions where a combination of the spin-orbit coupling and the low-symmetry of the crystal lattice plays a special role for the spin structure in the magnetically ordered state.

The crystal structure, magnetic ground state, and the temperature dependent microscopic spin-spin correlations of the frustrated honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Na2Co2TeO6 have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction. A three dimensional (3D) long-range antiferromagnetic ordering has been found below TN ~ 24.8 K. The magnetic ground state, determined to be zigzag antiferromagnet [k = (1/2 0 0)], occurs due to the competing exchange interactions up to third nearest neighbors within the honeycomb lattice. The exceptional existence of a limited magnetic correlation length along the c axis (perpendicular to the honeycomb layers in the ab planes) has been found within the 3D long-range ordered state, even at 1.8 K, well below TN. The observed limited correlation along the c axis is explained by the disorder distribution of the Na ions within the intermediate layers. The reduced ordered moments mCo(1) = 2.77(3) muB/Co2+ and mCo(2) = 2.45(2) muB/Co2+ at 1.8 K reflect the persistence of spin fluctuations in the ordered state. Above TN, the presence of short-range magnetic correlations, manifested by broad diffuse magnetic peaks, has been found. Reverse Monte Carlo analysis of the experimental diffuse magnetic scattering data reveals that the spin correlations are mainly confined within the 2D honeycomb layers (ab plane) with a correlation length of ~ 12 Å at 25 K. The nature of spin arrangements is found to be similar in both the short-range and long-range ordered magnetic states. This implies that the short-range correlation grows with decreasing temperature and leads to the zigzag AFM ordering at T < TN. The present study provides a comprehensive picture of the magnetic correlations over the temperature range above and below TN and their relation to the crystal structure. The role of intermediate soft Na-layers on the magnetic coupling between honeycomb planes is discussed.

Spin-spin correlations and microscopic origin of net magnetization in the spin-1 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14 have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction. The present study reveals a 3D long-range magnetic ordering below 16 K where the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetic trimers that are coupled ferromagnetically along the spin-chain. The moment components along the a and c axes arrange antiferromagnetically. Our study establishes that the uncompensated moment components along the b axis result in a net magnetization per unit cell. The magnetic structure, determined in the present study, is in agreement with the results of recent first principles calculation; however, it is in contrast to a fascinating experimental prediction of ferrimagnetic ordering based on the periodicity of the exchange interactions in CaNi3P4O14. Our study also confirms the presence of broad diffuse magnetic scattering, due to 1D short-range spin-spin correlations, over a wide temperature range below ~50 K down to a temperature well below the Tc. Total neutron scattering analysis by the RMC method reveals that the dominating spin-spin correlation above Tc is ferromagnetic and along the b axis. The nearest neighbour spin-spin correlations along the a and c axes are found to be weakly antiferromagnetic. The nature of the trimer spin structure of the short-range state is similar to that of the 3D long-range ordered state. The present investigation of microscopic nature of the magnetic ground state also explains the condition required for the 1/3 magnetization plateau to be observed in the trimer spin-chains. In spite of the S=1 trimer chain system, the present compound CaNi3P4O14 is found to be a good realization of 3D magnet below the Tc=16 K with full ordered moment values of ~2 mu_B/Ni2+ (1.98 and 1.96 mu_B/Ni2+ for two Ni sites, respectively) at 1.5 K.

We report on spectroscopy study of elementary magnetic excitations in an Ising-like antiferromagnetic chain compound SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature and applied transverse magnetic field up to 25 T. An optical as well as an acoustic branch of confined spinons, the elementary excitations at zero field, are identified in the antiferromagnetic phase below the Néel temperature of 5 K and described by a one-dimensional Schrödinger equation. The confinement can be suppressed by an applied transverse field and a quantum disordered phase is induced at 7 T. In this disordered paramagnetic phase, we observe three emergent fermionic excitations with different transverse-field dependencies. The nature of these modes is clarified by studying spin dynamic structure factor of a 1D transverse-field Heisenberg-Ising (XXZ) model using the method of infinite time evolving block decimation. Our work reveals emergent quantum phenomena and provides a concrete system for testifying theoretical predications of one-dimension quantum spin models.

We present synchrotron x-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the rare earth pyrochlore oxide Nd2Zr2O7 to study the ordered state magnetic structure and cystal field states. The structural characterization by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction confirms that the pyrochlore structure has no detectable O vacancies or Nd/Zr site mixing. The neutron diffraction reveals long range all-in/all-out antiferromagnetic order below T_N ~ 0.4 K with propagation vector k = (0 0 0) and an ordered moment of 1.26(2) μ_B/Nd at 0.1 K. The ordered moment is much smaller than the estimated moment of 2.65 μ_B/Nd for the local <111> Ising ground state of Nd3+ (J=9/2) suggesting that the ordering is partially suppressed by quantum fluctuations. The strong Ising anisotropy is further confirmed by the inelastic neutron scattering data which reveals a well-isolated dipolar-octupolar type Kramers doublet ground state. We have investigated the physical properties of a pyrochlore hafnate Nd2Hf2O7 using ac magnetic susceptibility χ_ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H) and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements, and determined the magnetic ground state by neutron powder diffraction study. An upturn is observed below 6 K in C_p(T)/T, however both C_p(T) and χ(T) do not show any clear anomaly down to 2 K. The χ_ac(T) shows a well pronounced anomaly indicating an antiferromagnetic transition at T_N = 0.55 K. The long range antiferromagnetic ordering is confirmed by neutron diffraction. The refinement of neutron diffraction pattern reveals an all-in/all-out antiferromagnetic structure, where for successive tetrahedra, the four Nd3+ magnetic moments point alternatively all-into or all-out-of the tetrahedron, with an ordering wavevector k = (0, 0, 0) and an ordered state magnetic moment of m = 0.62(1) μ_B/Nd at 0.1 K. The ordered moment is strongly reduced reflecting strong quantum fluctuations in ordered state.

Effects of interchain couplings and anisotropy on a Haldane chain have been investigated by single crystal inelastic neutron scattering and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the model compound SrNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$. Significant effects on low energy excitation spectra are found where the Haldane gap ($Δ_0 \approx 0.41J$; where $J$ is the intrachain exchange interaction) is replaced by three energy minima at different antiferromagnetic zone centers due to the complex interchain couplings. Further, the triplet states are split into two branches by single-ion anisotropy. Quantitative information on the intrachain and interchain interactions as well as on the single-ion anisotropy are obtained from the analyses of the neutron scattering spectra by the random phase approximation (RPA) method. The presence of multiple competing interchain interactions is found from the analysis of the experimental spectra and is also confirmed by the DFT calculations. The interchain interactions are two orders of magnitude weaker than the nearest-neighbour intrachain interaction $J$ = 8.7~meV. The DFT calculations reveal that the dominant intrachain nearest-neighbor interaction occurs via nontrivial extended superexchange pathways Ni--O--V--O--Ni involving the empty $d$ orbital of V ions. The present single crystal study also allows us to correctly position SrNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ in the theoretical $D$-$J_{\perp}$ phase diagram [T. Sakai and M. Takahashi, Phys. Rev. B 42, 4537 (1990)] showing where it lies within the spin-liquid phase.

For quasi-one dimensional quantum spin systems theory predicts the occurrence of a confinement of spinon excitation due to interchain couplings. Here we investigate the system SrCo2V2O8, a realization of the weakly-coupled Ising-like XXZ antiferromagnetic chains, by terahertz spectroscopy with and without applied magnetic field. At low temperatures a series of excitations is observed, which split in a Zeeman-like fashion in an applied magnetic field. These magnetic excitations are identified as the theoretically predicted spinon-pair excitations. Using a one dimensional Schrödinger equation with a linear confinement potential imposed by weak interchain couplings, the hierarchy of the confined spinons can be fully described.

The compounds YBaCo4-xFexO7+δ have a special layered-type crystal structure with an alternating Kagomé (6c site) and triangular (2a site) layers along the c axis. Fe3+ ions are found to be substituted at both the crystallographic 2a and 6c sites of Co ions. Mössbauer results show a high spin state of Fe3+ ions in a tetrahedral coordination. A reduction in the distortion of the Kagomé lattice has been observed with the Fe-substitution. The correlation length of the short-range antiferromagnetic ordering decreases with the Fe-substitution. The sharpness of the magnetic transition also decreases with the Fe-substitution.

Structural and magnetic properties of the geometrically frustrated layered compound YBaCo4O7 have been studied by magnetization and neutron diffraction. A layered type crystal structure, with alternating tetrahedral layers of Kagomé and triangular types, along the c axis (hexagonal symmetry, space group P63mc) has been found. The oxygen content of the present compound was determined by iodometric titration to be 7.00{\pm}0.01. Presence of a short-range antiferromagnetic ordering (below TN ~ 110 K) has been concluded from the appearance of an addition broad magnetic peak (at Q ~ 1.35 Å-1) in the neutron diffraction pattern. A staggered chiral type (\sqrt{3}\mult \sqrt{3} ) spin structure in the Kagomé layers has been found. Presence of a significant magneto-structural coupling is concluded from the changes in lattice parameters across the magnetic ordering temperature TN ~ 110 K.

Our study shows multiple magnetic phase transitions with temperature (T) over 1.5-300 K. In agreement with dc-magnetization and neutron depolarization results, the temperature dependence of the neutron diffraction patterns shows five distinct regions with different magnetic phases. Magnetic correlations of two iso-structural quasi-one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnetic spin-chain compounds Sr$M_2$V$_2$O$_8$ ($M$ = Co, Mn) have been investigated by magnetization and powder neutron diffraction. Two different collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structures, characterized by the propagation vectors, $k$ = (0 0 1) and $k$ = (0 0 0), have been found below $\sim$ 5.2 K and $\sim$ 42.2 K for the Co- and Mn-compounds, respectively. For the Mn-compound, AFM chains (along the $c$ axis) order ferromagnetically within the $ab$ plane, whereas, for the Co-compound, AFM chains order ferro-/antiferromagnetically along the $a/b$ direction. The critical exponent study confirms that the Co- and Mn-compounds belong to the Ising and Heisenberg universality classes, respectively. For both compounds, short-range spin-spin correlations are present over a wide temperature range above $T_N$. The reduced ordered moments at base temperature (1.5 K) indicate the presence of quantum fluctuations in both compounds due to the quasi-1D magnetic interactions.

Field-induced magnetic ordering in the Haldane chain compound SrNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and effect of anisotropy have been investigated using single crystals. Static susceptibility, inelastic neutron scattering, high-field magnetization, and low temperature heat-capacity studies confirm a non-magnetic spin-singlet ground state and a gap between the singlet ground state and triplet excited states. The intra-chain exchange interaction is estimated to be $J \sim 8.9{\pm}$0.1 meV. Splitting of the dispersions into two modes with minimum energies 1.57 and 2.58 meV confirms the existence of single-ion anisotropy $D(S^z){^2}$. The value of {\it D} is estimated to be $-0.51{\pm}0.01$ meV and the easy axis is found to be along the crystallographic {\it c}-axis. Field-induced magnetic ordering has been found with two critical fields [$μ_0H_c^{\perp c} = 12.0{\pm}$0.2 T and $μ_0H_c^{\parallel c} = 20.8{\pm}$0.5 T at 4.2 K]. Field-induced three-dimensional magnetic ordering above the critical fields is evident from the heat-capacity, susceptibility, and high-field magnetization study. The Phase diagram in the {\it H-T} plane has been obtained from the high-field magnetization. The observed results are discussed in the light of theoretical predictions as well as earlier experimental reports on Haldane chain compounds.

Both dc-magnetization and ac-susceptibility studies on the highest Ca-substituted compound (x = 0.05) indicate a spin-glass type magnetic ground state. In all compounds, a long-range three dimensional collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure is found below the Néel temperature TN of respective compound, whereas, well above TN, three dimensional short-range magnetic ordering is observed. In the intermediate temperature range just above TN, a strong effect of electron do** (La substitution) on the magnetic correlations has been observed. Here, a short-range AFM correlation with possible dimensionality of three has been found for substituted compounds (x = 0.05 and 0.1) as compared to the reported two dimensional long-range AFM ordering in the parent compound. With increasing the electron do**, a decrease in TN is also observed. The short-range magnetic correlations set in over a large temperature range above TN. A magnetic phase diagram in the x-T plane is proposed from these results.

In this paper we report an investigation on the ferromagnetic state and the nature of ferromagnetic transition of nanoparticles of $\mathrm{La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3}$ using magnetic measurements and neutron diffraction. The investigation was made on nanoparticles with crystal size down to $15$ nm. The neutron data show that even down to a size of $15$ nm the nanoparticles show finite spontaneous magnetization ($M_S$) although the value is much reduced compared to the bulk sample. We observed a non-monotonic variation of the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature $T_C$ with size $d$ and found that $T_C$ initially enhances on size reduction, but for $d < 50$ nm it decreases again. The initial enhancement in $T_C$ was related to an increase in the bandwidth that occured due to a compaction of the Mn-O bond length and a straightening of the Mn-O-Mn bond angle, as determined form the neutron data. The size reduction also changes the nature of the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition from first order to second order with critical exponents approaching mean field values. This was explained as arising from a truncation of the coherence length by the finite sample size.

Two distinct ferromagnetic phases of LaMn$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$O$_{3}$ having monoclinic structure with distinct physical properties have been studied. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature $\textit{T}_{c}$ is found to be different for both the phases. The origin of such contrasting characteristics is assigned to the changes in the distance(s) and angle(s) between Mn - O - Co resulting from distortions observed from neutron diffraction studies. Investigations on the temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy provide evidence for such structural characteristics, which affects the exchange interaction. The difference in B-site ordering which is evident from the neutron diffraction is also responsible for the difference in $\textit{T}_{c}$. Raman scattering suggests the presence of spin-phonon coupling for both the phases around the $\textit{T}_{c}$. Electrical transport properties of both the phases have been investigated based on the lattice distortion.

The Rietveld analysis of the room temperature x-ray diffraction patterns confirms no observable change of average crystal structure with the La-substitution. Both magnetic and magnetotransport properties are found to be very sensitive to the La-substitution. Interestingly, the La-substituted compounds show ferromagnetic-like behavior (due to the occurrence of a double exchange mechanism) whereas, the parent compound is an antiferromagnet (TN 150 K). All compounds show an insulating behavior, in the measured temperature range of 100 - 300 K, with an overall decrease in the resistivity with the substitution. A higher value of magnetoresistance has been successfully achieved by the La-substitution. We have proposed an electronic phase separation model, considering the formation of ferromagnetic clusters in the antiferromagnetic matrix, to interpret the observed magnetization and magnetotransport results for the La-substituted samples. The present study demonstrates an approach to achieve new functional materials, based on naturally occurring layered system like Ca2.5-xLaxSr0.5GaMn2O8, for possible spintronics applications.
