Crystallographic texture engineering in ceramics is essential to achieve direction-specific properties. Current texture engineering methods are time-consuming, energy extensive, or can lead to unnecessary diffusion of added dopants. Herein, we explore ultrafast high-temperature sintering (UHS) to prepare dense and textured alumina using templated grain growth (TGG). From a slurry containing alumina microplatelets coated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles dispersed in a matrix of alumina nanoparticles, green bodies with oriented microplatelets were prepared using magnetic assisted slip casting (MASC). The effects of the sintering temperature, time and heating rate on the density and microstructure of the obtained ceramics were then studied. We found that TGG occurs for a temperature range between 1640 and 1780 °C and 10 s sintering time. Sintering at 1700 °C for 10 s led to dense and textured alumina with anisotropic grains thanks to the Fe3O4 coating, which did not have the time to diffuse. The highest texture and relative density were obtained with a heating rate of ~5,500 °C/min, leading to texture-dependent anisotropic mechanical properties. This study opens new avenues for fabricating textured ceramics in ultra-short times.

Alumina microplatelets coated with a small amount of Fe3O4 can be oriented via a rotating magnetic field to create texture. After ultrafast high-temperature sintering (UHS), Fe atoms are found at the grain boundaries and within the grains, influencing the mechanical properties. Here, we compare the microstructure and mechanical properties of textured alumina prepared with and without Fe3O4 and sintered using UHS or conventional sintering (CS). Microstructural analysis using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) indicates that Fe3O4 induces crystallographic defects in the ceramic after UHS. Nanoindentation measurements enlighten that the presence of Fe3O4 leads to plastic flow that increases the energy dissipation, reaching ~122 % at a maximum load of 1900 mN compared to pristine samples. Overall, due to the concentrated effects of Fe3O4 after UHS, the flexural strength and fracture toughness values are higher than the other two samples, reaching values of ~287 MPa and 7 MPa.m0.5, respectively. These results could be leveraged to produce stronger and tougher ceramics.

Antiferromagnets have attracted significant attention in the field of magnonics, as promising candidates for ultralow-energy carriers for information transfer for future computing. The role of crystalline orientation distribution on magnon transport has received very little attention. In multiferroics such as BiFeO$_3$ the coupling between antiferromagnetic and polar order imposes yet another boundary condition on spin transport. Thus, understanding the fundamentals of spin transport in such systems requires a single domain, a single crystal. We show that through Lanthanum(La) substitution, a single ferroelectric domain can be engineered with a stable, single-variant spin cycloid, controllable by an electric field. The spin transport in such a single domain displays a strong anisotropy, arising from the underlying spin cycloid lattice. Our work shows a pathway to understand the fundamental origins of spin transport in such a single domain multiferroic.

To modulate spin transport in these systems, one typically applies a sufficiently strong magnetic field to allow for deterministic control of magnetic order. Here, we make use of the well-known multiferroic magnetoelectric, BiFeO3, to demonstrate non-volatile, hysteretic, electric-field control of thermally excited magnon current in the absence of an applied magnetic field. These findings are an important step toward magnon-based devices, where electric-field-only control is highly desirable.

In condensed-matter systems, competition between ground states at phase boundaries can lead to significant changes in material properties under external stimuli, particularly when these ground states have different crystal symmetries. A key scientific and technological challenge is to stabilize and control coexistence of symmetry-distinct phases with external stimuli. Using BiFeO3 (BFO) layers confined between layers of the dielectric TbScO3 as a model system, we stabilize the mixed-phase coexistence of centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric BFO phases with antipolar, insulating and polar, semiconducting behavior, respectively at room temperature. Application of in-plane electric (polar) fields can both remove and introduce centrosymmetry from the system resulting in reversible, nonvolatile interconversion between the two phases. This interconversion between the centrosymmetric insulating and non-centrosymmetric semiconducting phases coincides with simultaneous changes in the non-linear optical response of over three orders of magnitude, a change in resistivity of over five orders of magnitude, and a change in the polar order. Our work establishes a materials platform allowing for novel cross-functional devices which take advantage of changes in optical, electrical, and ferroic responses.

Polar textures have attracted significant attention in recent years as a promising analog to spin-based textures in ferromagnets. Here, using optical second harmonic generation based circular dichroism, we demonstrate deterministic and reversible control of chirality over mesoscale regions in ferroelectric vortices using an applied electric field. The microscopic origins of the chirality, the pathway during the switching, and the mechanism for electric-field control are described theoretically via phase-field modeling and second-principles simulations, and experimentally by examination of the microscopic response of the vortices under an applied field. The emergence of chirality from the combination of non-chiral materials and subsequent control of the handedness with an electric field has far-reaching implications for new electronics based on chirality as a field controllable order parameter.

Texture in dense or porous ceramics can enhance their functional and structural properties. Current methods for texturation employ anisotropic particles as starting powders and processes that drive their orientation into specific directions. Using ultra-low magnetic fields combined with slip casting, it is possible to purposely orient magnetically responsive particles in any direction. When those particles are suspended with nanoparticles, templated grain growth occurs during sintering to yield a textured ceramic. Yet, the final grains are usually micrometric, leading weak mechanical properties. Here, we explore how to tune the grain orientation size using magnetic slip casting and templated grain growth. Our strategy consists in changing the size of the anisotropic powders and ensuring that magnetic alignment and densification occurs. The obtained ceramics featured a large range of grain anisotropy, with submicrometric thickness and anisotropic properties. Textured ceramics with tunable grains dimensions and porosity are promising for filtering, biomedical or composite applications.

Insulator to metal (IMT) transition (T$_t$ $\sim$ 341 K) in the VO2 accompanies transition from an infrared (IR) transparent to IR opaque phase. Tailoring of the IMT and associated IR switching behavior can offer potential thermochromic applications. Here we report on effects of the W and the Tb do** on the IMT and associated structural, electronic structure and optical properties of the VO2 thin film. Our results show that the W do** significantly lowers IMT temperature ($\sim$ 292 K to $\sim$ 247 K for 1.3\% W to 3.7\% W) by stabilizing the metallic rutile, $\it{R}$, phase while Tb do** does not alter the IMT temperature much and retains the insulating monoclinic, $\it{M1}$, phase at room temperature. It is observed that the W do** albeit significantly reduces the IR switching temperature but is detrimental to the solar modulation ability, contrary to the Tb do** effects where higher IR switching temperature and solar modulation ability is observed. The IMT behavior, electrical conductivity and IR switching behavior in the W and the Tb doped thin films are found to be directly associated with the spectral changes in the V 3$\it{d_{\|}}$ states.

We report the first detailed investigation of K$_2$MnS$_2$ and K$_2$MnSe$_2$ from the K$_2$MnS$_2$ structure type and their magnetic solid solution K$_2$MnS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ and find that compounds of this structure type consist of strongly-coupled pseudo-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains that collectively represent a frustrated two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet. Bulk samples of K$_2$MnS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ with $0 \leq x \leq 2$ are characterized using X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, magnetization and heat capacity measurements. An incommensurate cycloid magnetic structure with a magnetic propagation vector $k = [0.58~0~1]$ is observed for all samples in K$_2$MnS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$, and the ordering is robust despite a 12\% increase in cell volume. Geometric frustration of chains results in incommensurability along $a$ and a two-step magnetic transition. The varying geometries accessible in compounds of this structure type are presented as promising avenues to tune frustration.
