We examine charge correlations and instabilities in the pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates modeled by $d$-density wave ordering. The latter has a gap symmetry similar to the one observed in the $d$-wave superconductor. We use $t$-$J$ model to describe the charge correlations in the presence of electron-phonon interaction. Our finding suggest that the charge instability in the normal state is dominating at an incommensurate wavevector along (1, 1) instead of (1, 0) for a realistic interaction parameter. The dominance at the diagonal wavevector is further enhanced if the coupling between electron and bond-buckling $B_{1g}$ phonon is incorporated. On the other hand, a dominating charge-density correlation develops along (1, 0) at an incommensurate wavevector in the $d$-density wave ordered state, which shows a qualitative agreement with the experiments. The correlation becomes robust only in the presence of $B_{1g}$ phonon.

Recently, the thorium hydride ThH9 possessing an H-rich clathrate structure has been experimentally synthesized to exhibit a superconducting transition temperature Tc of 146 K at 170-175 GPa, while the more H-rich clathrate thorium hydride ThH18 was theoretically predicted to reach a Tc of 296 K at 400 GPa. Using first-principles calculations, we find that ThH9 has a more ionic character between Th atoms and H cages than ThH18 and that the latter has a more substantial hybridization of the Th 6p semicore and H 1s states than the former. These different bonding characteristics of ThH9 and ThH18 are associated with their stability at very different pressures. Furthermore, we reveal that (i) the H-derived density of states at the Fermi level Ef is about two times larger in ThH18 than in ThH9. (ii) the average squared phonon frequency of H atoms is about 29% higher in ThH18 than in ThH9, and (iii) the Fermi surface average squared electron-phonon matrix element is similar between the two hydrides. Consequently, the electron-phonon coupling constant of ThH18 becomes much greater than that of ThH9, leading to a significant Tc difference between the two thorium hydrides. Our findings not only provide an explanation for the very large differences in the stabilization pressure and superconducting transition temperature between ThH9 and ThH18 but also have important implications for the design of H-rich, high-Tc clathrate metal hydrides.

We show conclusively that a pseudogap state can arise at $T > T_c$, for reasonable pairing interaction strength, from order parameter fluctuations in a two dimensional minimal model of $d$-wave superconductivity. The occurrence of the pseudogap requires neither strong correlation nor the presence of competing order. We study a model with attractive nearest neighbor interaction and establish our result using a combination of cluster based Monte Carlo for the order parameter field and a twisted-boundary scheme to compute the momentum-resolved spectral function. Apart from a dip in the density of states that characterizes the pseudogap, the momentum and frequency resolution on our effective lattice size $\sim 160 \times 160$ allows two major conclusions: (i)~at $T < T_c$, despite the presence of thermal phase fluctuations the superconductor has only nodal Fermi points while all non nodal points on the normal state Fermi surface show a two peak spectral function with a dip at $ω=0$, and (ii)~for $T > T_c$ the Fermi points develops into arcs, characterized by a single quasiparticle peak, and the arcs connect up to recover the normal state Fermi surface at a temperature $T^* > T_c$. We show the variation of $T_c$ and $T^*$ with coupling strength and provide detailed spectral results at a coupling where $T^* \sim 1.5T_c$.

Recently, an alkaline earth hydride CaH$_6$ having a sodalitelike clathrate structure has been experimentally synthesized at megabar pressures with a maximum $T_c$ of 215 K, comparable to that of a rare earth hydride LaH$_{10}$. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we find that CaH$_6$ exhibits a huge peak in the Eliashberg spectral function $α^{2}F$ around the low-frequency region of H-derived phonon modes, in contrast to LaH$_{10}$ having a widely spreading spectrum of $α^{2}F$ over the whole frequencies of H-derived phonon modes. It is revealed that the huge peak of $α^{2}F$ in CaH$_6$ is associated with an effective electron-phonon coupling (EPC) between low-frequency optical phonons and hybridized H 1$s$ and Ca 3$d$ states near the Fermi energy. As pressure increases, the strengthened H$-$H covalent bonding not only induces a hardening of optical phonon modes but also reduces the electron-phonon matrix elements related to the low-frequency optical modes, thereby leading to a lowering of the EPC constant. It is thus demonstrated that H-derived low-frequency phonon modes play an important role in the pressure-induced variation of $T_c$ in CaH$_6$. Furthermore, unlike the presence of two distinct superconducting gaps in LaH$_{10}$, CaH$_6$ is found to exhibit a single isotropic superconducting gap.

We performed temperature- and do**-dependent high-resolution Raman spectroscopy experiments on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ to study $B$$_{\rm 1g}$ phonons. The temperature dependence of the real part of the phonon self-energy shows a distinct kink at $T=T_{\rm B1g}$ above $T$$_{\rm c}$ due to softening, in addition to the one due to the onset of the superconductivity. $T$$_{\rm B1g}$ is clearly different from the pseudogap temperature with a maximum in the underdoped region. The region between $T$$_{\rm B1g}$ and $T$$_{\rm c}$ resembles that of superconducting fluctuation or charge density wave order. While the true origin of the $B$$_{\rm 1g}$ phonon softening is not known, we can attribute it to a gap on the Fermi surface due to an electronic order. Our results may reveal the role of the $B$$_{\rm 1g}$ phonon not only in the superconducting state but also in the intertwined orders in multilayer copper oxide high-$T$$_{\rm c}$ superconductors.

The experimental realization of high-temperature superconductivity in compressed hydrides H$_3$S and LaH$_{10}$ at high pressures over 150 GPa has aroused great interest in reducing the stabilization pressure of superconducting hydrides. For cerium hydride CeH$_9$ recently synthesized at 80$-$100 GPa, our first-principles calculations reveal that the strongly hybridized electronic states of Ce 4$f$ and H 1$s$ orbitals produce the topologically nontrivial Dirac nodal lines around the Fermi energy $E_F$, which are protected by crystalline symmetries. By hole do**, $E_F$ shifts down toward the topology-driven van Hove singularity to significantly increase the density of states, which in turn raises a superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ from 74 K up to 136 K at 100 GPa. The hole-do** concentration can be controlled by the incorporation of Ce$^{3+}$ ions with varying their percentages, which can be well electronically miscible with Ce atoms in the CeH$_9$ matrix because both Ce$^{3+}$ and Ce behave similarly as cations. Therefore, the interplay of symmetry, band topology, and hole do** contributes to enhance $T_c$ in compressed CeH$_9$. This mechanism to enhance $T_c$ can also be applicable to another superconducting rare earth hydride LaH$_{10}$.

We investigate the magnetic excitations in view of the recent reports suggesting that the spin-wave energy may exhibit a significant dependence on the in-plane strain of a thin film of La$_2$CuO$_4$. The nature of dependence, as we find, can be explained naturally within a two-orbital model based on the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals. In particular, as the orbital-splitting energy between the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals increases with compressive strain, the zone-boundary spin-wave energy hardens. However, the hardening persists only until the orbital splitting reaches $\sim$ 2eV, beyond which there is no significant change. The behavior of zone-boundary spin-wave energy is explained in terms of the extent of hybridization between one of the exchange-split $d_{x^2-y^2}$ band which is nearly half filled and the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ band. The role of second-order antiferromagnetic superexchange process involving the inter-orbital hop** is also discussed.

The interplay between unconventional Cooper pairing and quantum states associated with atomic scale defects is a frontier of research with many open questions. So far, only a few of the high-temperature superconductors allow this intricate physics to be studied in a widely tunable way. We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to image the electronic impact of Co atoms on the ground state of the LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As system. We observe that impurities progressively suppress the global superconducting gap and introduce low energy states near the gap edge, with the superconductivity remaining in the strong-coupling limit. Unexpectedly, the fully opened gap evolves into a nodal state before the Cooper pair coherence is fully destroyed. Our systematic theoretical analysis shows that these new observations can be quantitatively understood by the nonmagnetic Born-limit scattering effect in a s$\pm$-wave superconductor, unveiling the driving force of the superconductor to metal quantum phase transition.

We have explored a new mechanism for switching magnetism and superconductivity in a magnetically frustrated iron-based superconductor using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM). Our SPSTM study on single crystal Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs shows that a spin-polarized tunneling current can switch the Fe-layer magnetism into a non-trivial $C_4$ (2$\times$2) order, not achievable by thermal excitation with unpolarized current. Our tunneling spectroscopy study shows that the induced $C_4$ (2$\times$2) order has characteristics of plaquette antiferromagnetic order in Fe layer and strongly suppressed superconductivity. Also, thermal agitation beyond the bulk Fe spin ordering temperature erases the $C_4$ state. These results suggest a new possibility of switching local superconductivity by changing the symmetry of magnetic order with spin-polarized and unpolarized tunneling currents in iron-based superconductors.

A subtle balance between competing interactions in strongly correlated systems can be easily tipped by additional interfacial interactions in a heterostructure. This often induces exotic phases with unprecedented properties, as recently exemplified by high-Tc superconductivity in FeSe monolayer on the nonmagnetic SrTiO3. When the proximity-coupled layer is magnetically active, even richer phase diagrams are expected in iron-based superconductors (FeSCs), which however has not been explored due to the lack of a proper material system. One promising candidate is Sr2VO3FeAs, a naturally-assembled heterostructure of a FeSC and a Mott-insulating vanadium oxide. Here, using high-quality single crystals and high-accuracy 75As and 51V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, we show that a novel electronic phase is emerging in the FeAs layer below T0 ~ 155 K without either static magnetism or a crystal symmetry change, which has never been observed in other FeSCs. We find that frustration of the otherwise dominant Fe stripe and V Neel fluctuations via interfacial coupling induces a charge/orbital order with C4-symmetry in the FeAs layers, while suppressing the Neel antiferromagnetism in the SrVO3 layers. These findings demonstrate that the magnetic proximity coupling is effective to stabilize a hidden order in FeSCs and, more generally, in strongly correlated heterostructures.

Although the pairing mechanism of the Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs) has not yet been settled with a consensus, as to the pairing symmetry and the superconducting (SC) gap function, the abundant majority of experiments are supporting for the spin-singlet sign-changing s-wave SC gaps on multibands ($s^{\pm}$-wave state). This multiband $s^{\pm}$-wave state is a very unique gap state {\it per se} and displays numerous unexpected novel SC properties such as a strong reduction of the coherence peak, non-trivial impurity effects, nodal-gap-like nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals, various Volovik effects in the specific heat (SH) and thermal conductivity, and anomalous scaling behaviors with the SH jump and the condensation energy vs. $T_c$, etc. In particular, many of these non-trivial SC properties can be easily mistaken as evidence for a nodal gap state such as a d-wave gap. In this review, we provide detailed explanations of theoretical principles for the various non-trivial SC properties of the $s^{\pm}$-wave pairing state, and then critically compare the theoretical predictions with the experiments of the FeSCs. This will provide a pedagogical overview of how much we can coherently understand the wide range of different experiments of the FeSCs within the $s^{\pm}$-wave gap model.

The optical conductivity spectra of the low frequency region ($< 1,000$ $cm^{-1}$) in the normal state (80 K $< T \leq$ 300 K) is well fitted with two Drude forms, which indicates the presence of multiple bands at the Fermi level. Decreasing temperature below 80 K, this low frequency Drude spectra develops pseudogap (PG) hump structure at around $\approx 100$ $cm^{-1}$ and continuously evolves into the fully opened superconducting (SC) gap structure below $T_c$. Theoretical calculations of the optical conductivity with the preformed Cooper pair model provide an excellent description of the temperature evolution of the PG structure above $T_c$ into the SC gap structure below $T_c$. The extracted two SC gap sizes are $Δ_S$ = 4.9 $meV$ and $Δ_L$ = 14.2 $meV$, suggesting Ca$_{8.5}$La$_{1.5}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)(Fe$_{10}$As$_{10}$) as a multiple gap superconductor with a mixed character of the weak coupling and strong coupling superconductivity.

The symmetry requirement and the origin of magnetic orders coexisting with superconductivity have been strongly debated issues of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs). Observation of C$_4$-symmetric antiferromagnetism in violation of the inter-band nesting condition of spin-density waves in superconducting ground state will require significant change in our understanding of the mechanism of FeSC. The superconducting material Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs, a bulk version of monolayer FeSC in contact with a perovskite layer with its magnetism (T$_N$ ~ 50 K) and superconductivity (T$_c$ ~ 37 K) coexisting at parent state, has no reported structural orthorhombic distortion and thus makes a perfect system to look for theoretically expected C$_4$ magnetisms. Based on variable temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM) with newly discovered imaging mechanism that removes the static surface reconstruction (SR) pattern by fluctuating it rapidly with spin-polarized tunneling current, we could visualize underlying C$_4$ symmetric (2$\times$2) magnetic domains and its phase domain walls. We find that this magnetic order is perfectly consistent with the plaquette antiferromagnetic order in tetragonal Fe spin lattice expected from theories based on the Heisenberg exchange interaction of local Fe moments and the quantum order by disorder. The inconsistency of its modulation Q vectors from the nesting condition also implies that the nesting-based C$_2$ symmetric magnetism is not a unique prerequisite of high-T$_c$ FeSC. Furthermore, the plaquette antiferromagnetic domain wall dynamics under the influence of small spin torque effect of spin-polarized tunneling current are shown to be consistent with theoretical simulation based on the extended Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

We studied pairing mechanism of the heavily electron doped FeSe (HEDIS) systems, which commonly have one incipient hole band -- a band top below the Fermi level by a finite energy distance $ε_b$ -- at $Γ$ point and ordinary electron bands at $M$ points in Brillouin zone (BZ). We found that the system allows two degenerate superconducting solutions with the exactly same $T_c$ in clean limit: the incipient $s^{\pm}_{he}$-gap ($Δ_h^{-} \neq 0$, $Δ_e^{+} \neq 0$) and $s_{ee}^{++}$-gap ($Δ_h =0$, $Δ_e^{+} \neq 0$) solutions with different pairing cutoffs, $Λ_{sf}$ (spin fluctuation energy) and $ε_b$, respectively. The $s_{ee}^{++}$-gap solution, in which the system dynamically renormalizes the original pairing cutoff $Λ_{sf}$ to $Λ_{phys}=ε_b$ ($< Λ_{sf}$), therefore actively eliminates the incipient hole band from forming Cooper pairs, but without loss of $T_c$, becomes immune to the impurity pair-breaking. As a result, the HEDIS systems, by dynamically tuning the pairing cutoff and selecting the $s_{ee}^{++}$-pairing state, can always achieve the maximum $T_c$ -- the $T_c$ of the degenerate $s^{\pm}_{he}$ solution in the ideal clean limit -- latent in the original pairing interactions, even in dirty limit.

We showed that the experimentally observed anomalous scaling relation $ΔCE \sim T_c ^{3.5}$ is well reproduced by the two-band BCS superconductor paired by a dominant interband interaction ($V_{inter} > V_{intra}$). Our result implies that this seemingly non-BCS-like scaling behavior, on the contrary to the common expectation, is in fact a strong experimental evidence that the pairing mechanism of the Fe-based superconductors is genuinely a BCS mechanism, meaning that "the Cooper pairs are formed by the itinerant carriers glued by a pairing interaction."

We show here that this anomalous non-BCS behavior is an intrinsic property of the multiband superconducting state paired by a dominant interband interaction ($V_{inter} > V_{intra}$) reflecting the relation $\frac{Δ_h}{Δ_e} \sim \sqrt{\frac{N_e}{N_h}}$ near $T_c$, as in the $\pm$S-wave pairing state. Then this $ΔC$ vs. $T_c$ relation can continuously change from the perfect BNC scaling to a considerable deviation at lower $T_c$ region with a moderate variation of the impurity scattering rate.

Five of the six phonon modes expected from group theory are observed. In contrast with results obtained on iso-structural and iso-electronic LiFeAs, anomalous broadening of Eg(As) and A1g(Na) modes upon cooling is observed in both samples. In addition, in the Co-doped sample, a superconductivity-induced renormalization of the frequency and linewidth of the B1g(Fe) vibration is observed. This renormalization can not be understood within a single band and simple multi-band approaches. A theoretical model that includes the effects of SDW correlations along with sign-changing s-wave pairing state and interband scattering has been developed to explain the observed behavior of the B1g(Fe) mode.

Finally, the formation of the nodal gap $Δ_{nodal}$ with $A_{1g}$ symmetry on the other hole pocket with a larger FS is stabilized due to the balance of the interband pairing interactions from the main hole band gap $Δ_h=+Δ$ and the hidden electron band gap $Δ_e = -Δ$.

We have measured the reflectivity spectra of the iron based superconductor LiFeAs (Tc = 17.6 K) in the temperature range from 4 to 300 K. In the superconducting state (T < Tc), the clear opening of the optical absorption gap was observed below 25 cm-1, indicating an isotropic full gap formation. In the normal state (T > Tc), the optical conductivity spectra display a typical metallic behavior with the Drude type spectra at low frequencies, but we found that the introduction of the two Drude components best fits the data, indicating the multiband nature of this superconductor. A theoretical analysis of the low temperature data (T=4K < Tc) also suggests that two superconducting gaps best fit the data and their values were estimated as Δ1 = 1.59 meV and Δ2 = 3.15 meV, respectively. Using the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham (FGT) sum rule and dielectric function ε1(ω), the superconducting plasma frequency (ωps) is consistently estimated to be 6,665 cm-1, implying that about 59 % of the free carriers in the normal state condenses into the SC condensate. To investigate the various interband transition processes (for ω > 200 cm-1), we have also performed the local-density approximation (LDA) band calculation and calculated the optical spectra of the interband transitions. The theoretical results provided a qualitative agreement with the experimental data below 4000 cm-1

We report specific heat capacity measurements on a LiFeAs single crystal at temperatures down to 400 mK and magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla. A small specific heat jump at Tc and finite residual density of states at T=0 K in the superconducting (SC) state indicate that there are strong unitary scatterers that lead to states within the SC gap. A sub-linear magnetic field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient γ(H) at T=0 K is equally well fitted by both a nodal d-wave gap as well as a sign changing multiband \pm s-wave gap. When impurity effects are taken into account, however, the linear temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat C_{el}/T at low temperatures argues against a nodal d-wave superconducting gap. We conclude that the SC state of LiFeAs is most compatible with the multiband \pm s-wave SC state with the gap values Δ_{small}=0.46 Δ_{large}.

Performing numerical calculations we showed that these generic power laws survive for the good part of low field region with the realistic amount of impurities. We also found that the Volovik effect acts as an equivalent pair breaker as the unitary impurity scattering, hence induces the same temperature evolutions on $1/T_1$ and $K$, respectively, as the unitary impurities in both SC states. This finding implies that the Volovik effect should always be taken into account for the analysis of the NMR measurements in the mixed state.

Motivated by neutron scattering experiments in the high-$T_c$ cuprates, we propose the two-component spin-fermion model as a minimal phenomenological model which has both local spins and itinerant fermions as independent degrees of freedom. Our calculations of the dynamic spin correlation function provide a successful description of the puzzling neutron experiment data and show that: (1) the upward dispersion branch of magnetic excitations is mostly due to the local spin excitations; (2) the downward dispersion branch is from collective particle-hole excitations of fermions; and (3) the resonance mode is a mixture of both degrees of freedom. Using the same model with the same set of parameters we calculated the renormalized quasiparticle dispersion and successfully reproduced one of the key features of the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, i.e., the high energy kink structure in the fermion quasiparticle dispersion, hence further support the two component spin-fermion phenomenology.

Unique scale separation in Ba0.6+δK0.4-δFe2As2 compound - magnetic and SC correlation energy scales being widely separated - enabled us to establish that the PG structures observed in the range of 50 cm-1 - 150 cm-1 in optical conductivity is caused by the SC correlation and the magnetic correlation origin is ruled out. We found that it is a generic feature of the two band s-wave state with the unequal sizes of gaps, small $Δ_S$ and large $Δ_L$, that Doppler shift of the quasiparticle excitations (Volovik effect) creates a finite density of states, on the extended states outside of vortex cores, proportional to $H$ in contrast to the $\sqrt{H}$ dependence of the d-wave state. Impurity scattering effect on the $\pm$s-wave state, however, makes this generic $H$-linear dependence sublinear approaching to the $\sqrt{H}$ behavior. Our calculations of $\lim_{T \rightarrow 0} κ(T ,H)/T$ successfully fit the experimental data of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x )_2$ As$_2$ with different Co-do** $x$ by systematically varying the gap size ratio $R= |Δ_S | / |Δ_L |$. We also resolve the dilemma of a substantial value of $γ(H \rightarrow 0)$ but almost zero value of $\lim_{T \rightarrow 0} κ(T ,H \rightarrow 0)/T$, observed in experiments.

We study the superfluid density of the $\pm$s-wave state of the minimal two band model for the Fe-based superconductors and its evolution with impurity concentration. We show that the impurity scattering of the strong coupling limit induces the selfenergy of a generic form $Im Σ_{imp} (ω) \approx i γ+ i βω$ beyond a critical impurity concentration $Γ_{imp} > Γ_{crit}$. This form of $Im Σ_{imp} (ω)$ causes the temperature dependence of the superfluid density $[ρ_{s}(T) - ρ_{s}(0)] \approx - γT^2 -βT^3$. Combining with the full gap behavior of $ρ_{s}(T)$ for lower impurity concentration $Γ_{imp} < Γ_{crit}$, the $\pm$s-wave state produces a continuous evolution of $Δλ(T)$: exponentially flat $\to T^3 \to T^2$ with increasing impurity concentration that is consistent with the measurements of the Fe pnictide superconductors such as $M$-1111 ($M$=La,Nd,Sm,Pr) and Ba-122 with various do**s, except LaFePO which shows $Δλ(T) \propto T^{1.2}$ at low temperatures by recent experiment. Within this mean-field model, we showed that the large isotope effect is not inconsistent with the $\pm$s-wave pairing state and its high transition temperature. In principle, a large phonon isotope coefficient $α$ implies a large phonon coupling constant. However, the asymmetric density of states (DOS) between two bands substantially enhances the value of $α$, so that a moderate value of the phonon coupling constant ($λ_{\rm ph} \approx 0.4$) can produce a very large value of $α$ ($\approx 0.4$) as well as a high transition temperature together with an antiferromagnet (AFM)-induced interaction.

We study the impurity scattering on the $\pm$s-wave superconductor, with realistic parameters for the Fe-pnictide superconductors. Using $\mathcal{T}$-matrix method, generalized for the two bands, we found that impurity scattering of the unitary limit forms off-centered bound states inside of the superconducting gap, which modifies, surprisingly, the density of states (DOS) of a fully opened gap to a V-shaped one as in the case of a d-wave superconductor. This behavior provides coherent explanations to the several conflicting experimental issues of the Fe-pnictide superconductors: the V-shaped DOS but with an isotropic gap observed in the photoemission and tunneling experiments; the power law behavior of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1 \approx T^α$ ; $α\approx 3$), down to very low temperatures.

We present the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations of an $sπ$ pairing state of two band superconductivity as a model for the FeAs superconductors. The $sπ$ state is an s-wave pairing state with an internal $π$ phase, that is, nodeless gaps on each band but with the opposite sign. The novel features of this state are investigated by calculating the local density of states of the $π$ phase superconductor/normal metal bilayers. Because of the sign reversal between the two condensates, the zero bias conductance peak appears as observed in tunneling spectroscopy experiments on FeAs superconductors. This eliminates the major obstacle to establish the $sπ$ state as the pairing symmetry of the FeAs superconductors.

We consider the minimal two-band model for the Fe-based superconductors with a phenomenological pairing interaction which mimics short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations. Two superconducting (SC) gap solutions are found to exist with the model: sign-changing s-wave gap ($\pm$s-wave) and double d-wave gap states. Both solutions hold the approximate relation $Δ_{h} ^{max} N_h \approx Δ_{e} ^{max} N_e$, a generic feature of two band model with a dominant interband pairing interaction. We carried out the calculations of the SC properties of the both SC states such as the density of states, temperature dependencies of spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, Knight shift, and penetration depth, particularly taking into account of the interband coherence factors. The results are discussed in comparison with the currently available experimental data.

We study the effects of phonon interaction on the superconducting pairing in the background of a d-wave gap, mediated by antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations, using coupled BCS gap equations. We found that phonon interaction can induce a s-wave component to the d-wave gap in the (D+S) form with an interaction anisotropy and in the (D+$i$S) form without anisotropy, respectively. In either case, however, T$_c$ is not enhanced compared to the pure d-wave pairing without phonon interaction. On the other hand, anisotropic phonon interaction can dramatically enhance the d-wave pairing itself and therefore T$_c$, together with the AFM spin fluctuation interaction. This (D$_{AFM}$ + D$_{ph}$) type pairing exhibits strongly reduced isotope coefficient despite the large enhancement of T$_c$ by phonon interaction. Finally, we study the combined type of (D$_{AFM}$ + D$_{ph}$ +$i$S)) gap and calculate the penetration depth and specific heat to be compared with the experiments.

We propose the two-component spin-fermion model as a minimal phenomenological model which has both local spins and itinerant fermions as independent degrees of freedom. Our calculations of the dynamic spin correlation function provide good agreement with experiments and show: (1) the upward dispersion branch of magnetic excitations is mostly due to the local spin excitations; (2) the downward dispersion branch is from collective spin excitations of fermions; (3) the resonance mode is a mixture of both degrees of freedom.

Results for both compounds are consistent with a superconducting gap of d-wave symmetry in the presence of strong impurity scattering, though with quite different gap-over-$T_c$ ratios $2 Δ_{0}/ k_B T_c$ (8 for PuCoGa$_5$ and 5 for PuRhGa$_5$). In the normal state, PuRhGa$_5$ exhibits a gradual suppression of $(T_1 T)^{-1}$ below 25 K, while measurements for PuCoGa$_5$ reveal a monotonic increase down to $T_c$. We propose that this behavior is consistently understood by the crossover from the two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnetic regime of the local $5f$-electron spins of Pu to the concomitant formation of the fermion pseudogap based on the two-component spin-fermion model.

In addition, we noticed a significant round-off of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 just above the superconducting transition temperature that is not observed in the sister compound PuCoGa5. It appears that in PuRhGa5 superconductivity is mediated by spin fluctuations, too. This provides additional support to the scenario of superconducting pairing mediated by spin fluctuations in the Pu-115 compounds similar to the Ce-115 compounds and the high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors.

We consider experimental data of specific heat C(T) and resistivity $ρ(T)$ as input to determine a consistent scattering boson with the superconducting transition temperature of 18.5K in PuCoGa$_5$. Irrespective to the type of boson, the characteristic boson frequency is found to be $\sim 150 K$ from the resistivity fitting. The spin fluctuation model is most consistent with the experimental resistivity, successfully explaining the anomalous temperature dependence ($\sim \frac{T^2}{150 K +T}$) at low temperatures as well as the saturation behavior at high temperatures. Assuming that the pairing state is non s-wave, the large residual resistivity $ρ_{imp} \sim 20 μΩcm \sim 120 K$ suggests that an ideally pure sample of PuCoGa$_5$ would have a maximum T$_c$ of 39 K.

We consider a general D-wave superconducting gap function in the presence of coexisting antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-rang order. We find that the D-wave order parameter develops additional nodes without lowering the symmetry of the state due to the interplay of the superconducting and AFM correlations. This AFM correlated D-wave gap has a small gap structure inside the generic D-wave gap. As a result of this additional structure it shows a quite different response to impurities compared to a standard D-wave gap. We calculate the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ of this gap in the presence of impurities and discuss the implications for the experiments of some AFM heavy- fermion superconductors and in particular for CeRhIn5.

Starting with the general free energy functional of the superconductor for a coupled electron boson system, we derived the analytic result of the specific heat jump of the strong coupling superconductivity occurring in the coupled electron boson system. Then using the two component spin-fermion model we calculate the specific heat coefficient $C(T)/T$ both for the normal and superconducting states and show a good agreement with the experiment of CeCoIn$_5$. Our result also clearly demonstrated that the specific heat coefficient $C(T)/T$ of a coupled electron boson system can be freely interpreted as a renormalization either of the electronic or of the bosonic degrees of freedom.

We describe the mechanism for the mixed moment ground state based on the large-N treatment of the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian added with RKKY interaction. With the mixed moment ground state we can explain several puzzling experiments in magnetic HF compounds such as a small value of local moment, coexistence of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and the paramagnetic (PM) phases, local quantum criticality, etc.
