Conventional antiferromagnets are known for their time-reversal symmetry in their electronic structure, which results in a zero anomalous Hall coefficient. On the other hand, compensated magnets with noncollinear or canted moments or altermagnets can yield a nonzero anomalous Hall signal and a nondissipative transversal current. While high-symmetry systems typically exhibit an isotropic Hall effect, more interesting are low-symmetry systems, such as hematite, which demonstrates exceptional magnetotransport behavior as it becomes conductive upon slight Ti do**. We scrutinize the magnetotransport in Titanium-doped hematite, revealing a pronounced and unconventional symmetry dependence, particularly contingent on crystal orientation. Our findings establish a compelling correlation between our experimental observations and the classification of hematite as an altermagnet with anisotropic magnetotransport and anomalous Hall effect. Remarkably, our observations result from measurements in the hop**-transport regime, showing that particular transport properties in altermagnets are not limited to conventional band conduction.

Hematite is a canted antiferromagnetic insulator, promising for applications in spintronics. Here, we present ab initio calculations of the tensorial exchange interactions of hematite and use them to understand its magnetic properties by parameterizing a semiclassical Heisenberg spin model. Using atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we calculate the equilibrium properties and phase transitions of hematite, most notably the Morin transition. The computed isotropic and Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interactions result in a Néel temperature and weak ferromagnetic canting angle that are in good agreement with experimental measurements. Our simulations show how dipole-dipole interactions act in a delicate balance with first and higher-order on-site anisotropies to determine the material's magnetic phase. Comparison with spin-Hall magnetoresistance measurements on a hematite single-crystal reveals deviations of the critical behavior at low temperatures. Based on a mean-field model, we argue that these differences result from the quantum nature of the fluctuations that drive the phase transitions.

For deterministic magnetization switching by spin-orbit torque (SOT) in a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy system, an additional in-plane direction magnetic field is essential for deterministic switching by breaking the magnetization symmetry. Realizing chirality in a magnetic ordering system can be one approach for achieving asymmetry in the lateral direction for field-free magnetization switching. However, systematic analysis of the influence of the chiral spin system on deterministic switching is still scarce. In this report, the achievement of field-free SOT-induced magnetization switching by using a chiral spin configuration is investigated by experiments and micromagnetic simulations. We designed a system in which only part of the ferromagnetic layer overlaps with the heavy metal layer in the Pt/Co/MgO structure. Therefore, a spin current is exerted only on a local area of the ferromagnetic layer, which results in a Néel-type chiral spin configuration. The induced chiral spin configuration can be stabilized (or destabilized) depending on the sign of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction of the system. The stabilized spin configuration plays a crucial role in the deterministic switching in zero field. We expect our findings to widen the perspective on chirality-based all-electrical SOT device fabrication.

Here we report two-dimensional (2D) single-crystalline holey-graphyne (HGY) created an interfacial two-solvent system through a Castro-Stephens coupling reaction from 1,3,5-tribromo-2,4,6-triethynylbenzene. HGY is a new type of 2D carbon allotrope whose structure is comprised of a pattern of six-vertex and eight-vertex rings. The carbon-carbon 2D network of HGY is alternately linked between benzene rings and sp (carbon-carbon triple bond) bonding. The ratio of the sp over sp2 bonding is 50%. It is confirmed that HGY is stable by DFT calculation. The vibrational, optic, and electric properties of HGY are investigated theoretically and experimentally. It is a p-type semiconductor that embraces a natural direct band gap (~ 1.0 eV) with high hole mobility and electron mobility at room temperature. This report is expected to help develop a new types of carbon-based semiconductor devices with high mobility.
