We have determined the local structure of photoexcited metastable WO$_3$ created 150 ps after 400 nm laser irradiation by the pulse pump--probe L$_3$-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and the constrained thorough search analysis. We have found a highly distorted octahedral local structure with one of the shortest W=O bonds being further shortened to 1.66 Åwhile the other five bonds were elongated even though theoretical calculations predicted the reverse change. We discuss this contradiction and propose a possible structure for the metastable state.

An established diamond anvil cell with a boron-doped diamond heater and transport measurement terminals has performed the high-pressure synthesis of a cubic Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ superconductor. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ phase is stable in the pressure range of P>5 GPa in a decompression process. Transport measurement terminals in the diamond anvil cell detect a metallic nature and superconductivity in the synthesized Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ with a maximum onset transition temperature of 13.3 K at 5.6 GPa. The observed pressure-T$_{c}$ relationship is consistent with that from the first-principles calculation. The observation of superconductivity in Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ opens further materials exploration under high temperature and pressure conditions.

Temperature and pressure are essential parameters in the synthesis, evaluation, and application of functional materials. This study proposes the addition of a heating function to a high-pressure diamond anvil cell (DAC) with in-situ measurement probes. The proposed DAC allows for simultaneous control of temperature and pressure within the sample space and can be used to synthesize functional materials under extreme conditions. The various components, namely the heater, thermometer, and measurement probes, were fabricated with a boron-doped diamond epitaxial film and could be used repeatedly. The developed DAC was used to successfully conduct the high-pressure annealing of La(O,F)BiS$_{2}$ single crystal and the high-pressure synthesis of EuFBiS$_{2}$ superconductors. The proposed technique shows promise for further exploration of superconductors to broaden the research field.

Layered ternary transition-metal chalcogenides have been focused as a vein of exploration for superconductors. In this study, TiGeTe$_{6}$ single crystals were synthesized and characterized by structural and valence state analyses and electrical transport measurements. The transport properties were measured under various pressures up to 71 GPa. The activation energy gets smaller as the applied pressure increases, and a signature of a pressure-induced metallization was observed under around 8.4 GPa. Under 13 GPa, pressure-induced superconductivity was discovered in this compound for the first time, with successive drops at 3 K and 6 K in the resistance, indicating the presence of multiple superconducting transitions. The superconducting transition temperature kept increasing as we further applied the pressure to the TiGeTe$_{6}$ single crystal in the performed pressure range, reaching as high as 8.1 K under 71 GPa.

We found out that Gd enters stoichiometrically and randomly into the Ho site, leading to a Vegard-type structural change. The addition of spherical S$^{7/2}$ Gd$^{3+}$ moments prompts an enhancement in Curie temperature, a reduction in peak value of the magnetic entropy change while still being relatively high, and a broadening of the magnetic entropy change curves. The overall influence is a relatively high refrigerant capacity and relative cooling power, and an extension of the thermal working range to higher temperatures; thus, electing Ho$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{2}$(as potential candidates for cryogenic refrigeration applications.

The superconductivity of high transition temperature (Tc) occurs in copper oxides with carrier-do** to an antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulator. This discovery more than thirty years ago immediately led to a prediction about the formation of a small Fermi pocket. This structure, however, has not yet been detected, while it could be a key element in relating high-Tc superconductivity to Mott physics. To address this long-standing issue, we investigate the electronic structure of a five-layered Ba2Ca4Cu5O10(F,O)2 with inner CuO2 planes demonstrated to be cleanest ever in cuprates. Most surprisingly, we find small Fermi surface (FS) pockets closed around (pi/2,pi/2) consistently by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and quantum oscillation measurements. The d-wave superconducting gap opens along the pocket, revealing the coexistence between the superconductivity and AF order in the same CuO2 sheet. Our data further indicate that the superconductivity can occur without contribution from the states near the antinodal region, which are shared by other competing excitations such as the charge density wave (CDW) and pseudogap states. This will have significant implications for understanding the superconductivity and puzzling Fermi arc phenomena in cuprates.

In this study, we fabricated a boron-doped diamond micro-electrode and an undoped diamond insulation on a beveled culet surface of the diamond anvil. By using the developed DAC, we demonstrated the electrical transport measurements for sulfur hydride H$_2$S which known as a pressure-induced high-transition temperature superconducting H$_3$S at high pressure. The measurements were successfully conducted under high pressure up to 192 GPa, and then a multi-step superconducting transition composed from pure sulfur and some kinds of surfer hydrides, which is possible HS$_2$, was observed with zero resistance.

Among the Fe-based superconductors, Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ is unique in that its crystal structure is the simplest and the electron correlation level is the strongest, and thus it is important to investigate the do**($x$)-temperature ($T$) phase diagram of this system. However, inevitably incorporated excess Fe currently prevents the establishment of the true phase diagram. We overcome the aforementioned significant problem via develo** a new annealing method termed as "Te-annealing" wherein single crystals are annealed under Te vapor. Specifically, we conducted various magnetotransport measurements on Te-annealed superconducting Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$. We observed that crossover from the incoherent to the coherent electronic state and opening of the pseudogap occurs at high temperatures ($\approx$ 150 K for $x$ = 0.2). This is accompanied by a more substantial pseudogap and the emergence of a phase with a multi-band nature at lower temperatures (below $\approx$ 50 K for $x$ = 0.2) before superconductivity sets in. Based on the results, the third type electronic phase diagram in Fe-based high-$T_c$ superconductors is revealed.

Here we investigate the effects of Dy substitution in the magnetocaloric properties of Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_{x}$B$_{2}$ alloys ($\textit{x}$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0). We find that the Curie temperature ($\textit{T}$$_{C}$) gradually increases upon Dy substitution, while the magnitude of the magnetic entropy change |$Δ\textit{S}_{M}$| at $\textit{T}$ = $\textit{T}_{C}$ decreases from 0.35 to 0.15 J cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$ for a field change of 5 T. Due to the presence of two magnetic transitions in these alloys, despite the change in the peak magnitude of |$Δ\textit{S}_{M}$|, the refrigerant capacity ($\textit{RC}$) and refrigerant cooling power ($\textit{RCP}$) remains almost constant in all do** range, which as large as 5.5 J cm$^{-3}$ and 7.0 J cm$^{-3}$ for a field change of 5 T. Magnetic refrigeration exploits the magnetocaloric effect which is the entropy change upon application and removal of magnetic fields in materials, providing an alternate path for refrigeration other than the conventional gas cycles. While intensive research has uncovered a vast number of magnetic materials which exhibits large magnetocaloric effect, these properties for a large number of compounds still remain unknown. To explore new functional materials in this unknown space, machine learning is used as a guide for selecting materials which could exhibit large magnetocaloric effect. By this approach, HoB$_{2}$ is singled out, synthesized and its magnetocaloric properties are evaluated, leading to the experimental discovery of gigantic magnetic entropy change 40.1 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ (0.35 J cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$) for a field change of 5 T in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic second-order phase transition with a Curie temperature of 15 K. This is the highest value reported so far, to our knowledge, near the hydrogen liquefaction temperature thus it is a highly suitable material for hydrogen liquefaction and low temperature magnetic cooling applications.

The $^{31}$P Knight shift $K_{ab}$ at $B_{0}\perp c$ shows a nearly $T$-independent uniform spin susceptibility above $T_\mathrm{c}$ and a spin singlet decrease below $T_\mathrm{c}$. The $^{31}$P nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_{1}$ shows an asymptotic behavior of $a+bT$ ($a$ and $b$ are constants) at $T >$ 100 K and the minimum at 40 K with an upturn toward $T_\mathrm{c}$. The $a$ term in 1/$T_{1}$ indicates the presence of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The negative $θ$ = $-$15 K of the Curie-Weiss-type antiferromagnetic spin susceptibility $χ$($Q$) $\propto$ 1/($T$+$θ$) in the analysis of 1/$T_{1}T$ suggests antiferromagnetic instability in the superconducting state. Discussions are made from the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory for the spin fluctuations with interlayer correlation.

We showed that the nuclear spin polarization in single quantum dots can have three stable branches under a longitudinal magnetic field. The states were accompanied by hysteresis loops around the boundaries of each branch with a change in the excitation condition. To explain these findings, we incorporated the electron spin relaxation caused by the nuclear spin fluctuation into the previously-studied dynamic nuclear spin polarization mechanism. The model reproduces the new features of nuclear spin polarization and the associated strong reduction in the observed electron spin polarization, and can refer to the tristability of nuclear spin polarization.

Our measurements on the current-voltage characteristics reveal that the $c$-axis maximum Josephson current density is sensitive to the superfluid density in outer planes while the critical temperature and the superconducting gap remain unaffected. Switching dynamics of stacked IJJs exhibit that the fluctuation in gauge-invariant phase difference of an IJJ implies that the inner plane completely shields the capacitive coupling between adjacent IJJs, which is essential for mono- and bilayered cuprates.

A direct patterning technique of gallium-irradiated superconducting silicon has been established by focused gallium-ion beam without any mask-based lithography process. The electrical transport measurements for line and square shaped patterns of gallium-irradiated silicon were carried out under self-field and magnetic field up to 7 T. Sharp superconducting transitions were observed in both patterns at temperature of 7 K. The line pattern exhibited a signature of higher onset temperature above 10 K. A critical dose amount to obtain the superconducting gallium-irradiated silicon was investigated by the fabrication of various samples with different doses. This technique can be used as a simple fabrication method for superconducting device.

In this study, we conducted various magnetotransport measurements on Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ single crystals from which excess iron was sufficiently removed. Our results revealed that crossover from the incoherent to the coherent electronic state and opening of the pseudogap occur at high temperatures ($\approx$ 150 K for $x$ = 0.2). This is accompanied by a more substantial pseudogap and the emergence of a phase with a multi-band nature at lower temperatures (below $\approx$ 50 K for $x$ = 0.2) before superconductivity sets in. A comparison of these results with those of the as-grown (non-superconducting) samples implies that the coherent state accompanied by the pseudogap is needed for the occurrence of superconductivity in this system.

Polycrystalline samples of layered pnictogen diselenide NdO0.8F0.2Sb1-xBixSe2 (x = 0 to 0.8) were successfully synthesized by solid-state reactions. Electrical resistivity in the synthesized samples was systematically decreased with an increase in Bi content x. Crystal structure analysis using synchrotron X-ray diffraction suggests that insulator to metal transition upon Bi do** correlates with anomalous change in c-axis length and/or corrugation in conducting layer. The emergence of superconductivity under high pressure is demonstrated using diamond anvil cell (DAC) with boron-doped diamond electrodes, for x = 0.3 and 0.7 as the representative samples. For Sb-rich one (x = 0.3), we observed a superconducting transition with Tconset = 5.3 K at 50 GPa, which is the first-ever report of the superconductivity in layered SbCh2-based (Ch: chalcogen) compounds. The Tconset of x = 0.3 increased with increasing pressure and reached 7.9 K at 70.8 GPa, followed by the gradual decrease in Tc up to 90 GPa. For Bi-rich one (x = 0.7), a superconducting transition with Tconset = 5.9 K was observed at 43.5 GPa, which is the almost comparable to that of x = 0.3; besides, upper critical field (Hc2) is evaluated to be ~10 T for x = 0.7, which is higher than that of x = 0.3 (Hc2 = 6.7 T at 50 GPa).

The temperature dependences of the $^{63}$Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{63}$(1/$T_1$) and the spin Knight shift $^{63}K_\mathrm{spin}$ of the inner plane Cu(1) site were nearly the same as those of the outer plane Cu(2) site in the normal states. The pseudogap temperature $T^*$ defined as the maximum temperature of $^{63}$(1/$T_1T$) was 190 K for the underdoped $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 124 sample and 143 K for the optimally doped $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 134 K sample. The NMR results indicate the uniform hole distribution in the three layers, which is consistent with a coalescence of three-derived Fermi surfaces predicted by a band theory. The room temperature in-plane $^{63}K_\mathrm{spin}^{ab}$ depends on whether the number of CuO$_2$ planes per unit cell is even or odd for the Hg-based multilayer cuprate superconductors.

Candidates compounds for new thermoelectric and superconducting materials, which have narrow band gap and flat bands near band edges, were exhaustively searched by a high-throughput first-principles calculation from an inorganic materials database named AtomWork. We focused on AgIn$_{5}$Se$_{8}$ which has high density of state near the Fermi level. AgIn$_{5}$Se$_{8}$ was successfully synthesized as single crystals using a melt and slow cooling method. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the obtained crystal is high quality without deficiencies. The valence states in AgIn$_{5}$Se$_{8}$ were determined to be Ag1+, In3+ and Se2- in accordance with a formal charge by the core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The electrical resistance was evaluated under high pressure using a diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes. Although the sample was insulator with a resistance of above 40 MΩ at ambient pressure, the resistance markedly decreased with increase of the pressure, and a pressure-induced superconducting transition was discovered at 3.4 K under 52.5 GPa. The transition temperature increased up to 3.7 K under further pressure of 74.0 GPa.

Transport properties of Ce$_{0.85}$F0.15SbS$_{2}$ and undoped CeOSbS$_{2}$ under high pressure were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Electrical resistivity measurements of the Ce$_{0.85}$F0.15SbS$_{2}$ single crystals were performed under various high pressures using a diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes. The samples showed the insulator to metal transition by applying high pressure up to 30-40 GPa. On the other hand, the undoped CeOSbS$_{2}$ showed almost same transport property with the F-doped sample under high pressure. The valence state analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed a simple valence state of Ce3+ in Ce$_{0.85}$F0.15SbS$_{2}$ and mixed valence state between Ce3+ and Ce4+ in undoped CeOSbS$_{2}$. The valence fluctuation in Ce carried out the comparable transport nature in the both samples. A band calculation suggests that the undoped CeOSbS$_{2}$ could be metallic under high pressure of 30 GPa in accordance with the experimental results. A superior thermoelectric property of power factor in CeOSbS$_{2}$ was estimated under high pressure around 20 GPa in comparison with that of ambient pressure.

We observed a double pair-breaking peak in the antinodal B1g configuration that we attribute to the two antinodal gaps opening on the outer and inner CuO2-plane (OP and IP) band, respectively. The do** dependence of the pair-breaking peak energy was investigated. Considering the difference in do** level between the IP and OP, all the B1g pair-breaking peak energies for OP and IP were found to align on a single line as a function of do**, which is consistent with the previous results on the double and mono-layer cuprates. Within our experimental accuracy the IP and OP peaks start to appear almost at the same temperature. These findings suggest some sort of interaction between the layers. The observed gap energy is very large, not scaling with Tc.

A charge excitation in a two-dimensional Mott insulator is strongly coupled with the surrounding spins, which is observed as magnetic-polaron formations of doped carriers and a magnon sideband in the Mott-gap transition spectrum. However, the dynamics related to the spin sector are difficult to measure. Here, we show that pump-probe reflection spectroscopy with 7-fs laser pulses can detect the optically induced spin dynamics in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$, a cuprate Mott insulator. The bleaching signal at the Mott-gap transition is enhanced at $\sim$18 fs, which corresponds to the spin-relaxation time in magnetic-polaron formations and is characterized by the exchange interaction. More importantly, ultrafast coherent oscillations appear in the time evolutions of the reflectivity changes, and their frequencies (1400-2700 cm$^{-1}$) are equal to the probe energy measured from the Mott-gap transition peak. These oscillations originate from interferences between charge excitations with two magnons and provide direct evidence for charge-spin coupling.

The resistance measurements of high quality FeSe superconducting single crystal under high pressure were successfully demonstrated by just putting the sample and gasket on the bottom diamond anvil directly. The superconducting transition temperature of FeSe single crystal was enhanced up to 43 K by applying uniaxial-like pressure.

We studied the formation mechanism of the in-plane nuclear field in single self-assembled In$_{0.75}$Al$_{0.25}$As/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As quantum dots. The Hanle curves with an anomalously large width and hysteretic behavior at the critical transverse magnetic field were observed in many single quantum dots grown in the same QD sample. In order to explain the anomalies in the Hanle curve indicating the formation of a large nuclear field perpendicular to the photo-injected electron spin polarization, we propose a new model based on the current phenomenological model for dynamic nuclear spin polarization. The model includes the effects of the nuclear quadrupole interaction and the sign inversion between in-plane and out-of-plane g-factors, and the model calculations reproduce successfully the characteristics of the observed anomalies in the Hanle curves.

We studied the zero-field dynamic nuclear spin polarization in a single In$_{0.75}$Al$_{0.25}$As/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As quantum dot. Even without any external magnetic field, the positive trion excited by the circularly-polarized light generated an Overhauser field of up to $\sim$0.8 T. From the excitation power dependences of the Overhauser field and degree of circular polarization of the photoluminescence spectra, the relation between the Overhauser field and Knight field under zero external magnetic field was revealed clearly. In addition, we found that the nuclear depolarization rate decreased as the magnitude of the longitudinal magnetic field increased, which seemed to be caused by the influence of the quadrupolar interaction of nuclear spins. Further, the key parameters describing the dynamics of a coupled electron-nuclear spin system, the electron g-factor and the fluctuation of the Overhauser field, were evaluated in a typical single InAlAs quantum dot.

To elucidate the pseudogap phase diagram including the overdoped state of high transition temperature (high-$T_c$) cuprates, we must understand the origin of the positive out-of-plane magnetoconductivity (MC) observed in these compounds. We show that the superconductive density-of-states (DOS) depletion effect, in addition to the pseudogap effect, clearly appears below the superconductive fluctuation regime, and the contribution becomes dominant in the superconducting state.

Our knowledge of the ground state of underdoped hole-doped cuprates has evolved considerably over the last few years. There is now compelling evidence that inside the pseudogap phase, charge order breaks translational symmetry leading to a reconstructed Fermi surface made of small pockets. Quantum oscillations, [Doiron-Leyraud N, et al. (2007) Nature 447:564-568], optical conductivity [Mirzaei SI, et al. (2013) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 110:5774-5778] and the validity of Wiedemann-Franz law [Grissonnache G, et al. (2016) Phys. Rev. B 93:064513] point to a Fermi liquid regime at low temperature in the underdoped regime. However, the observation of a quadratic temperature dependence in the electrical resistivity at low temperatures, the hallmark of a Fermi liquid regime, is still missing. Here, we report magnetoresistance measurements in the magnetic-field-induced normal state of underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 which are consistent with a T^2 resistivity extending down to 1.5 K. The magnitude of the T^2 coefficient, however, is much smaller than expected for a single pocket of the mass and size observed in quantum oscillations, implying that the reconstructed Fermi surface must consist of at least one additional pocket.

We have performed the photoemission and inverse photoemission experiments to elucidate the origin of Mott insulating states in A-site ordered perovskite CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ (CCTO). Experimental results have revealed that Cu 3$d$-O 2$p$ hybridized bands, which are located around the Fermi level in the prediction of the local-density approximation (LDA) band calculations, are actually separated into the upper Hubbard band at $\sim$ 1.5 eV and the lower Hubbard band at $\sim$ $-$1.7 eV with a band gap of $\sim$ 1.5-1.8 eV. We also observed that Cu 3$d$ peak at $\sim$ $-$3.8 eV and Ti 3$d$ peak at $\sim$ 3.8 eV are further away from each other than as indicated in the LDA calculations. In addition, it is found that the multiplet strucutre around $-$9 eV includes a considerable number of O 2$p$ states. These observations indicate that the Cu 3$d$ and Ti 3$d$ electrons hybridized with the O 2$p$ states are strongly correlated, which originates in the Mott-insulating states of CCTO.

The out-of-plane results are well reproduced by the theory, implying that the large, negative out-of-plane MR as well as the sharp increase in the zero-field out-of-plane resistivity $ρ_{c}$ near the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ originate from the superconductive DOS fluctuation effect. On the other hand, the in-plane results are better reproduced without the DOS contribution (i.e., using only the Aslamazov-Larkin (AL) contribution), which may be explained in terms of the d-wave superconductivity of the layered superconductors.

A detailed comparison of the superconducting parameters with $T_c$ for these compounds suggests that an additional superconducting condensation energy exists, due to an increase in the number of stacking CuO$_{2}$ planes in a unit cell.

The onset temperature for the superconductive fluctuation, $T_{scf}$, is determined by the large positive in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) and negative out-of-plane MR observed near $T_c$, whereas the pseudogap opening temperature $T^*$ is determined by the semiconductive upturn of the zero-field $ρ_c$. $T_{scf}$ was found to scale roughly as $T_c$, with a decreasing temperature interval between them upon do**. On the other hand, $T^*$ starts out much higher than $T_{scf}$ but decreases monotonically upon do**; finally, at a heavily overdoped state, it is not observed above $T_{scf}$. These results imply that the pseudogap is not a simple precursor of superconductivity, but that further study is needed to determine whether or not $T^*$ exists below $T_{scf}$ in the heavily overdoped state.

The results demonstrate that shocked bismuth undergoes a series of structural transformations involving four solid structures: the Bi-I, Bi-II, Bi-III and Bi-V phases. The transformation from the Bi-I phase to the Bi-V phase occurs within 4 ns under shock compression at ~11 GPa, showing no transient phases with the available experimental conditions. Successive phase transitions (Bi-V->Bi-III->Bi-II->Bi-I) during the shock release within 30 ns have also been resolved, which were inaccessible using other dynamic techniques.

Hc2(p) exhibits two peaks, each located at a critical point where the Fermi surface undergoes a transformation. The condensation energy obtained directly from Hc2, and previous Hc1 data, undergoes a 20-fold collapse below the higher critical point. These data provide quantitative information on the impact of competing phases in suppressing superconductivity in cuprates.
