Effects of Out Time on the Mechanical and Fracture Properties of Chopped Fiber Composites Made From Repurposed Aerospace Prepreg Scrap and Waste

Degree of cure is measured via Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) while tension, compression, and shear tests are p… ▽ More In this study, the effects of prepreg out time on the mechanical and fracture properties of Discontinuous Fiber Composites (DFCs) are investigated. Carbon fiber prepregs are aged at 0x, 1x, 2x, and 3x the out life in an environmental chamber at constant temperature and humidity. Degree of cure is measured via Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) while tension, compression, and shear tests are performed to investigate the effects that aging has on these mechanical properties. For the first time, Mode I intra-laminar fracture and its size effect are also investigated by means of fracture tests on geometrically-scaled Single Edge Notch Tension (SENT) specimens. From the tension, compression, and shear experiments it is seen that the out time has no effect on the elastic moduli. However, the strength increases with increasing age of the specimens for all the loading conditions. The percent increase compared to the non-aged material ranges from 15% to 33%. This is likely caused by plasticization of the matrix with age, allowing for higher energy absorption. More complex trends are reported for the SENT specimens for all the sizes. It is found that the fracture energy and characteristic length initially decrease with age, and then finally increase for the longest out time. This trend is owed to two factors with countering effects on the fracture behavior: 1) the increase of the average number of platelets with increasing aging due to increase in resin viscosity, and 2) the plasticization of the matrix with aging. The results from this study suggest that Discontinuous Fiber Composites (DFCs) made from reused materials can have equal, if not better, performance than non-aged DFCs. The experimental data presented in this work can be used as a baseline to design DFC composite components made from repurposed prepreg scrap and waste. △ Less

Matter wave soliton bouncer

Resonant oscillations of the soliton's center of mass and width, induced by appropriate modulation of the atomic scattering length and the slope of the linear potential are analyzed. In numerical experiments we observe the Fermi type acceleration of the soliton when the vertical position of the reflecting surface is periodically varied in time. Analytical predictions are compared with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and qualitative agreement between them is found. △ Less

Flatness of the Energy Landscape for Horn Clauses

Abstract: The Little-Hopfield neural network programmed with Horn clauses is studied. We argue that the energy landscape of the system, corresponding to the inconsistency function for logical interpretations of the sets of Horn clauses, has minimal ruggedness. Properties of the angular gap in a one dimensional photonic band gap structure containing single negative materials

This gap i… ▽ More The linear properties of the angular gap in a one dimensional photonic band gap structure containing single negative material layers are investigated. This gap forms at oblique incidence due to total internal reflection into air when the Snell's law breaks down and its lower edge occurs at the frequency where the refractive index of one or both layers of the structure approaches zero. This gap is found to be highly sensitive to the incident angle and the polarization of light, but is not affected by thickness ratio of the layers. It is also shown that the electric field is extremely enhanced at the low frequency edge of this gap for transverse magnetic polarization. This highly enhanced electric field can be used for certain applications. △ Less

The Deviants' Dilemma: A Simple Game in the Run-Up to Seniority

This paper presents an analysis of the conflict between two groups in the run-up to seniority in these institutions. This paper presents an analysis of the conflict between two groups in the run-up to seniority in these institutions. We overview the inspirations and practice of each group, and their conflict in the run-up to organisational seniority, and analyse the conflict using a simple model of a "Deviants' Dilemma" game played in a single population. Within the game's framework, we analyse the conditions for the evolutionary stable state and the stability of the proportions of each group, given a strategy resulting from learning based on rewards. We also provide a short discussion on the role of noise in the system and we conclude with some discussions on the generality and possible applications of the model. △ Less

Learning strategies for global games with delayed payoffs

The evolutionary paradigm has been applied to two-person games to discover strategies in this context. Subse-quently, many-player games, and specifically global games (where payoffs depend collectively on all the rest of the players) as with the minimal game, have been studied. The minority game is attractive because it has intuitive similarities to e.g. securing niche businesses. We enhance this intuitive similarity by extending the game through the introduction of delayed payoffs. Payoffs depend on the values of future moves; we reward choices which later on become popular. We study agents' moves in such global game with delayed payoff. Instead of an evolutionary approach we allow learning in the agents. We study strategies that may emerge through learning in agents in such games. △ Less
