Atmospheric turbulence profile plays an important role in designing and operating adaptive optics (AO) systems with multiple laser guide stars. To obtain representative free atmospheric profiles and resolved ground layer profiles for future AO systems at the Subaru telescope, we are conducting the SHARPEST (Shack-Hartmann Atmospheric tuRbulence Profiling Experiment at the Subaru Telescope) project. In this project, we develop a turbulence profiler comprising two Shack-Hartmann (SH) sensors to observe a pair of bright stars through the Subaru telescope with high spatial sampling by 2 cm subapertures. We perform two analyses on the SH spot data: variance analysis on the spot scintillation for free atmospheric profiles, and on the spot slope for ground layer profiles. This paper introduces the initial results of free atmospheric profiles as well as total seeing values and wind profiles obtained by the first two engineering runs. The free atmospheric profiles reconstructed by the two independent SH sensors show good agreement. The results are also consistent with simultaneous measurements by another profiler except for turbulence strength at ~1 km, which is explained by an overestimation problem of scintillation-based profilers. Measured total seeing values are also smaller than the simultaneous measurements, possibly due to the difference in ground layer turbulence between the two sites. The wind profiles show good consistency with the direct measurements by a rawinsonde. Through this study, we establish a method to constrain the free atmospheric profile, the total seeing, and the wind profile by analysing data from a single SH sensor with fine subapertures.

Abstract:
We report optical spectroscopic observations of four blue-excess dust-obscured galaxies (BluDOGs) identified by Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. We report optical spectroscopic observations of four blue-excess dust-obscured galaxies (BluDOGs) identified by Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. BluDOGs are a sub-class of dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs, defined with the extremely red color $(i-[22])_{\rm AB} \geq 7.0$; Toba et al. 2015), showing a significant flux excess in the optical $g$- and $r$-bands over the power-law fits to the fluxes at the longer wavelengths. Noboriguchi et al. (2019) has suggested that BluDOGs may correspond to the blowing-out phase involved in a gas-rich major merger scenario. However the detailed properties of BluDOGs are not understood because of the lack of spectroscopic information. In this work, we carry out deep optical spectroscopic observations of four BluDOGs using Subaru/FOCAS and VLT/FORS2. The obtained spectra show broad emission lines with extremely large equivalent widths, and a blue wing in the CIV line profile. The redshifts are between 2.2 and 3.3. The averaged rest-frame equivalent widths of the CIV lines are $160\pm33$ $\mathrm{\mathring{A}}$, $\sim$7 times higher than the average of a typical type-1 quasar. The FWHMs of their velocity profiles are between 1990 and 4470 ${\rm km\ s^{-1}}$, and their asymmetric parameters are 0.05 and 0.25. Such strong CIV lines significantly affect the broad-band magnitudes, which is partly the origin of the blue excess seen in the spectral energy distribution of BluDOGs. Their estimated supermassive black hole masses are $1.1\times10^8 < M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot < 5.5 \times 10^8$. The inferred Eddington ratios of the BluDOGs are higher than 1 ($1.1< λ_{\rm Edd} < 3.8$), suggesting that the BluDOGs are in a rapidly evolving phase of supermassive black holes.

The observed targets are drawn from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS), covering a wide range of merger stages. We successfully detect emission lines such as H$β$, [OIII]$λ$5007, H$α$, [NII]$λλ$6549,6583, and [SII]$λλ$6717,6731 with a spectral resolution of $R$ = 1500-2000, which provides (i) spatially-resolved ($\sim$200-700 pc) moment map of ionized gas and (ii) diagnostics for active galactic nucleus (AGN) within the central $\sim$3--11 kpc in diameter for our sample. We find that [OIII] outflow that is expected to be driven by AGN tends to be stronger (i) towards the galactic center and (ii) as a sequence of merger stage. In particular, the outflow strength in the late-stage (stage D) mergers is about 1.5 times stronger than that in the early-state (stage B) mergers, which indicates that galaxy mergers could induce AGN-driven outflow and play an important role in the co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes.

Additionally, we collect fluxes of faint rest-UV emission lines in 12 $z \sim$ 3 radio galaxies from the literature. Previously, physical and chemical properties of narrow-line regions (NLRs) in high-$z$ active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been investigated mostly by using only strong rest-UV emission-lines (e.g., NV$λ$1240, CIV$λ$1549, HeII$λ$1640, and CIII]$λ$1909). Such strong-line diagnostics are based on various assumptions due to the limitation in the number of available emission-line constraints. In this work, both physical and chemical properties of NLR clouds in each object are estimated by fitting detailed photoionization models to the measured emission-line fluxes. We confirm that the metallicity of NLRs in AGNs at $z \sim$ 3 is solar or super-solar, without assuming the gas density and ionization parameter thanks to the constrains from the faint emission lines. This result suggests that high-$z$ radio galaxies are already chemically matured at $z \sim$ 3.

The observation of 236 MeV muon neutrinos from kaon-decay-at-rest (KDAR) originating in the core of the Sun would provide a unique signature of dark matter annihilation. Since excellent angle and energy reconstruction are necessary to detect this monoenergetic, directional neutrino flux, DUNE with its vast volume and reconstruction capabilities, is a promising candidate for a KDAR neutrino search. In this work, we evaluate the proposed KDAR neutrino search strategies by realistically modeling both neutrino-nucleus interactions and the response of DUNE. We find that, although reconstruction of the neutrino energy and direction is difficult with current techniques in the relevant energy range, the superb energy resolution, angular resolution, and particle identification offered by DUNE can still permit great signal/background discrimination. Moreover, there are non-standard scenarios in which searches at DUNE for KDAR in the Sun can probe dark matter interactions.

The narrow-line region (NLR) consists of gas clouds ionized by the strong radiation from the active galactic nucleus (AGN), distributed in the spatial scale of AGN host galaxies. The strong emission lines from the NLR are useful to diagnose physical and chemical properties of the interstellar medium in AGN host galaxies. However, the origin of the NLR is unclear; the gas clouds in NLRs may be originally in the host and photoionized by the AGN radiation, or they may be transferred from the nucleus with AGN-driven outflows. For studying the origin of the NLR, we systematically investigate the gas density and velocity dispersion of NLR gas clouds using a large spectroscopic data set taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The [S II] emission-line flux ratio and [O III] velocity width of 9,571 type-2 Seyfert galaxies and 110,041 star-forming galaxies suggest that the gas density and velocity dispersion of NLR clouds in Seyfert galaxies (ne ~ 194 cm-3 and sigma([O III]) ~ 147 km s-1) are systematically larger than those of clouds in H II regions of star-forming galaxies (ne ~ 29 cm-3 and sigma([O III]) ~ 58 km s-1). Interestingly, the electron density and velocity dispersion of NLR gas clouds are larger for Seyfert galaxies with a higher [O III]/Hbeta flux ratio, i.e., with a more active AGN. We also investigate the spatially-resolved kinematics of ionized gas clouds using the Map** Nearby Galaxies at the Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey data for 90 Seyfert galaxies and 801 star-forming galaxies. We find that the velocity dispersion of NLR gas clouds in Seyfert galaxies is larger than that in star-forming galaxies at a fixed stellar mass, at both central and off-central regions. These results suggest that gas clouds in NLRs come from the nucleus, probably through AGN outflows.

We combine new rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of two radio-quiet type-2 AGNs obtained with FOCAS on the Subaru Telescope with existing rest-frame UV emission lines, i.e., CIV1549, HeII1640, and CIII]1909, of a sample of 16 HzRGs and 6 additional X-ray selected type-2 AGNs, whose host stellar masses have been estimated in literature. We divided our sample in three stellar mass bins and calculated averaged emission-line flux ratios of CIV1549/HeII1640 and CIII]1909/CIV1549. Comparing observed emission-line flux ratios with photoionization model predictions, we estimated narrow line region (NLR) metallicities for each mass bin. We found that there is a positive correlation between NLR metallicities and stellar masses of type-2 AGNs at z ~ 3. This is the first indication that AGN metallicities are related to their hosts, i.e., stellar mass. Since NLR metallicities and stellar masses follow a similar relation as the MZR in star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts, our results indicate that NLR metallicities are related to those of the host galaxies. This study highlights the importance of considering lower-mass X-ray selected AGNs in addition to radio galaxies to explore the metallicity properties of NLRs at high redshift.

We present near-IR spectroscopy of 22 luminous low-ionization broad absorption line quasars (LoBAL QSOs) at redshift 1.3<z<2.5, with 12 objects at z~1.5 and 10 at z~2.3. The spectra cover the rest-frame H$α$ and H$β$ line regions, allowing us to obtain robust black hole mass estimates based on the broad H$α$ line. We use these data, augmented by a lower-redshift sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, to test the proposed youth scenario for LoBALs, which suggests that LoBALs constitute an early short-lived evolutionary stage of quasar activity, by probing for any difference in their masses, Eddington ratios, or rest-frame optical spectroscopic properties compared to normal quasars. In addition, we construct the UV to mid-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for the LoBAL sample and a matched non-BAL quasar sample. We do not find any statistically significant difference between LoBAL QSOs and non-BAL QSOs in their black hole mass or Eddington ratio distributions. The mean UV to mid-IR SED of the LoBAL QSOs is consistent with non-BAL QSOs, apart from their stronger reddening. At z>1 there is no clear difference in their optical emission line properties. We do not see particularly weak [OIII] or strong FeII emission. The LoBAL QSOs do not show a stronger prevalence of ionized gas outflows as traced by the [OIII] line, compared to normal QSOs of similar luminosity. We conclude that the optical-MIR properties of LoBAL QSOs are consistent with the general quasar population and do not support them to constitute a special phase of active galactic nucleus evolution.

Low-metallicity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are interesting to study the early phase of the AGN evolution. However most AGNs are chemically matured and accordingly low-metallicity AGNs are extremely rare. One approach to search for low-metallicity AGNs systematically is utilizing the so-called BPT diagram that consists of the [O III]$λ$5007/H$β$$\lambda4861$ and [N II]$\lambda6584$/H$α$$\lambda6563$ flux ratios. Specifically, photoionization models predict that low-metallicity AGNs show a high [O III]$λ$5007/H$β$$λ$4861 ratio and a relatively low [N II]$λ$6584/H$α$$λ$6563 ratio, that corresponds to the location between the sequence of star-forming galaxies and that of usual AGNs on the BPT diagram (hereafter "the BPT valley"). However, other populations of galaxies such as star-forming galaxies and AGNs with a high electron density or a high ionization parameter could be also located in the BPT valley, not only low-metallicity AGNs. In this paper, we examine whether most of emission-line galaxies at the BPT valley are low-metallicity AGNs or not. We select 70 BPT-valley objects from 212,866 emission line galaxies obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Among the 70 BPT-valley objects, 43 objects show firm evidence of the AGN activity; i.e., the He II$λ$4686 emission and/or weak but significant broad H$α$ emission. Our analysis shows that those 43 BPT-valley AGNs are not characterized by a very high gas density nor ionization parameter, inferring that at least 43 among 70 BPT-valley objects (i.e., $>60$ %) are low-metallicity AGNs. This suggests that the BPT diagram is an efficient tool to search for low-metallicity AGNs.

One of the unsettled, important problems in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is the major ionization mechanism of gas clouds in their narrow-line regions (NLRs). In order to investigate this issue, we present our $J$-band spectroscopic observations for a sample of 26 nearby Seyfert galaxies. In our study, we use the flux ratio of the following two forbidden emission lines, [Fe II]1.257$μ$m and [P II]1.188$μ$m because it is known that this ratio is sensitive to the ionization mechanism. We obtain the [Fe II]/[P II] flux ratio or its lower limit for 19 objects. In addition to our data, we compile this flux ratio (or its lower limit) of 23 nearby Seyfert galaxies from the literature. Based on the collected data, we find that three Seyfert galaxies show very large lower limits of [Fe II]/[P II] flux ratios ($\gtrsim$10); NGC 2782, 5005, and Mrk 463. It is thus suggested that the contribution of the fast shock in the gas excitation is significantly large for them. However, more than half of Seyfert galaxies in our sample show moderate [Fe II]/[P II] flux ratios ($\sim$2), that is consistent to the pure photoionization by power-law ionizing continuum emission. We also find that the [Fe II]/[P II] flux ratio shows no clear correlation with the radio loudness, suggesting that the radio jet is not the primary origin of shocks in NLRs of Seyfert galaxies.

In order to understand nature of building blocks of galaxies in the early universe, we investigate "genuine irregular galaxies (GIGs)" in the nearby universe. Here, GIGs are defined as isolated galaxies without regular structures (spheroid, bulge, disk, bar, spiral arm, and nucleus). Using the results of two excellent studies on galaxy morphology based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we obtain a sample of 66 irregular galaxies. We carry out new classification of them into GIGs and non-GIGs which have regular structure or show evidence for galaxy interaction, by using the SDSS Data Release 10 images. We then find that a half of these irregular galaxies (33/66) are GIGs and obtain an unambiguous sample of 33 GIGs for the first time. We discuss their observational properties by comparing them with those of elliptical, S0, spiral galaxies, and irregular galaxies without the GIGs. We find that our GIGs have smaller sizes, lower optical luminosities, bluer rest-frame optical colors, lower surface stellar mass densities, and lower gas metallicity than normal galaxies. All these properties suggest that they are in chemically and dynamically younger phases even in the nearby universe.
