We report an ASKAP search for associated HI 21-cm absorption against bright radio sources from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue (MRC) 1-Jy sample. The search uses pilot survey data from the ASKAP First Large Absorption Survey in \hi (FLASH) covering the redshift range $0.42 < z < 1.00$. From a sample of 62 MRC 1-Jy radio galaxies and quasars in this redshift range we report three new detections of associated HI 21-cm absorption, yielding an overall detection fraction of $1.8\%^{+4.0\%}_{-1.5\%}$. The detected systems comprise two radio galaxies (MRC 2216$-$281 at $z=0.657$ and MRC 0531$-$237 at $z=0.851$) and one quasar (MRC 2156$-$245 at $z=0.862$). The MRC 0531$-$237 absorption system is the strongest found to date, with a velocity integrated optical depth of $\rm 143.8 \pm 0.4 \ km \ s^{-1}$. All three objects with detected HI 21-cm absorption are peaked-spectrum or compact steep-spectrum (CSS) radio sources, classified based on our SED fits to the spectra. Two of them show strong interplanetary scintillation at 162 MHz, implying that the radio continuum source is smaller than 1 arcsec in size even at low frequencies. Among the class of peaked-spectrum and compact steep-spectrum radio sources, the HI detection fraction is $23\%^{+22\%}_{-13\%}$. This is consistent within $1σ$ with a detection fraction of $\approx 42\%^{+21\%}_{-15\%}$ in earlier reported GPS and CSS samples at intermediate redshifts ($0.4 < z < 1.0$). All three detections have a high 1.4 GHz radio luminosity, with MRC 0531$-$237 and MRC 2216$-$281 having the highest values in the sample, $\rm > 27.5 \ W \ Hz^{-1}$. The preponderance of extended radio sources in our sample could partially explain the overall low detection fraction, while the effects of a redshift evolution in gas properties and AGN UV luminosity on the neutral gas absorption still need to be investigated.

In this letter, we report the discovery of a fast neutral hydrogen outflow in SDSS J145239.38+062738.0, a merging radio galaxy containing an optical type I active galactic nuclei (AGN). This discovery was made through observations conducted by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) using redshifted 21-cm absorption. The outflow exhibits a blueshifted velocity likely up to $\sim-1000\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$ with respect to the systemic velocity of the host galaxy with an absorption strength of $\sim -0.6\,\rm mJy\,beam^{-1}$ corresponding to an optical depth of 0.002 at $v=-500\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$. The mass outflow rate ranges between $2.8\times10^{-2}$ and $3.6\, \rm M_\odot \, yr^{-1}$, implying an energy outflow rate ranging between $4.2\times10^{39}$ and $9.7\times10^{40}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$, assuming 100 K $<T_{\rm s}<$ 1000 K. Plausible drivers of the outflow include the star bursts, the AGN radiation, and the radio jet, the last of which is considered the most likely culprit according to the kinematics. By analysing the properties of the outflow, the AGN, and the jet, we find that if the HI outflow is driven by the AGN radiation, the AGN radiation seems not powerful enough to provide negative feedback whereas the radio jet shows the potential to provide negative feedback. Our observations contribute another example of a fast outflow detected in neutral hydrogen, as well as demonstrate the capability of FAST in detecting such outflows.

We present new upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) HI 21-cm observations of the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 10565+2448, previously reported to show blueshifted, broad, and shallow HI absorption indicating an outflow. Our higher spatial resolution observations have localised this blueshifted outflow, which is $\sim$ 1.36 kpc southwest of the radio centre and has a blueshifted velocity of $\sim 148\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$ and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $\sim 581\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$. The spatial extent and kinematic properties of the HI outflow are consistent with the previously detected cold molecular outflows in IRAS 10565+2448, suggesting that they likely have the same driving mechanism and are tracing the same outflow. By combining the multi-phase gas observations, we estimate a total outflowing mass rate of at least $140\, \rm M_\odot \,yr^{-1}$ and a total energy loss rate of at least $8.9\times10^{42}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$, where the contribution from the ionised outflow is negligible, emphasising the importance of including both cold neutral and molecular gas when quantifying the impact of outflows. We present evidence of the presence of a radio jet and argue that this may play a role in driving the observed outflows. The modest radio luminosity $L_{\rm1.4GHz}$ $\sim1.3\times10^{23}\,{\rm W\,Hz^{-1}}$ of the jet in IRAS 10565+2448 implies that the jet contribution to driving outflows should not be ignored in low radio luminosity AGN.

We present the results of a search for associated 21 cm HI absorption at redshift 0.42 < z < 1.00 in radio-loud galaxies from three Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey fields. These observations were carried out as part of a pilot survey for the ASKAP First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH). From a sample of 326 radio sources with 855.5 MHz peak flux density above 10 mJy we detected two associated HI absorption systems, in SDSS J090331+010847 at z= 0.522 and SDSS J113622+004852 at z= 0.563. Both galaxies are massive (stellar mass > 10$^{11}$ M$_{sun}$) and have optical spectra characteristic of luminous red galaxies, though SED fitting implies that SDSS J113622+004852 contains a dust-obscured starburst with SFR ~ 69 M$_{sun}$ yr$^{-1}$. The HI absorption lines have a high optical depth, with $τ_{pk}$ of 1.77 $\pm$ 0.16 for SDSS J090331+010847 (the highest value for any z > 0.1 associated system found to date) and 0.14 $\pm$ 0.01 for SDSS J113622+004852. In the redshift range probed by our ASKAP observations, the detection rate for associated HI absorption lines (with $τ_{pk}$ > 0.1 and at least 3$σ$ significance) is 2.9 (+9.7 -2.6) percent. Although the current sample is small, this rate is consistent with a trend seen in other studies for a lower detection rate of associated 21 cm HI absorption systems at higher redshift. We also searched for OH absorption lines at 0.67 < z < 1.34, but no detection was made in the 145 radio sources searched.

We present radio spectral analyses for a sample of 29 radio-quiet (RQ) and three radio-loud (RL) narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) detected with the Australia Telescope Compact Array at both 5.5 GHz and 9.0 GHz. The sample is characterized by L_bol/L_Edd > 0.15. The radio slopes in 25 of the 29 RQ NLS1s are steep (alpha_5.5-9.0 < -0.5), as found in earlier studies of RQ high L_bol/L_Edd AGN. This steep radio emission may be related to AGN-driven outflows, which are likely more prevalent in high L_bol/L_Edd AGN. In two of the three RL NLS1s, the radio slopes are flat or inverted (alpha_5.5-9.0 > -0.5), indicating a compact optically-thick source, likely a relativistic jet. Archival data at 3.0 GHz, 1.4 GHz, and 0.843 GHz are also compiled, yielding a sample of 17 NLS1s detected in three bands or more. In nine objects, the radio spectra flatten at lower frequencies, with median slopes of alpha_5.5-9.0 = -1.21 +/- 0.17, flattening to alpha_3.0-5.5 = -0.97 +/- 0.27, and to alpha_1.4-3.0 = -0.63 +/- 0.16. A parabolic fit suggests a median spectral turnover of ~ 1 GHz, which implies synchrotron self-absorption in a source with a size of only a fraction of 1 pc, possibly a compact wind or a weak jet. Two objects show significant spectral steepening to alpha < -2 above 3 GHz or 5 GHz, which may suggest relic emission from past ejection of radio emitting plasma, of the order of a few years to a few decades ago. Finally, two objects present a single spectral slope consistent with star-forming activity.

We identify four galaxies (A, B, X and Y) at the same redshift as the 21-cm H I Damped Lyman-α (DLA) absorption system, with impact parameters ranging from less than 10 kpc to almost 200 kpc from the quasar sightline. Ca II and Na I absorption is seen in the MUSE spectrum of the background QSO, with velocities coinciding with the initial HI 21-cm detection, but tracing less dense and warmer gas. This metal-line component aligns with the rotating ionised disc of galaxy B (impact parameter 18 kpc from the QSO) and appears to be co-rotating with the galaxy disc. In contrast, the 21-cm HI absorber is blueshifted relative to the galaxies nearest the absorber and has the opposite sign to the velocity field of galaxy B. Since galaxies A and B are separated by only 17 kpc on the sky and $70$ km s$^{-1}$ in velocity, it appears likely that the 21-cm detection traces extragalactic clouds of gas formed from their interaction. This system reveals that the cold 100 K neutral gas critical for star formation can be associated with complex structures beyond the galaxy disc, and is a first case study made in preparation for future large 21-cm absorption surveys like the ASKAP First Large Absorption Survey in HI.

After calibration, the light curves from both 5 GHz radio band and the optical R band were obtained, although the data were not smoothly sampled over the sampling period of about four days. We tentatively analyse the amplitudes and time scales of the variabilities, and any possible periodicity. The blazars vary significantly in the radio (except 3C66A and BL Lacertae with only marginal variations) and optical bands on intra- and inter-day time scales, and the source B0925+504 exhibits a strong quasi-periodic radio variability. No significant correlation between the radio- and optical-band variability appears in the five sources, which we attribute to the radio IDV being dominated by interstellar scintillation whereas the optical variability comes from the source itself. However, the radio- and optical-band variations appear to be weakly correlated in some sources and should be investigated based on well-sampled data from future observations.

The main results are: (1) the power-law correlation index ($P_{jet} \propto L_{disk}^μ$) typically ranges $μ=0.4-0.7$ for the LLAGN samples, and there is a hint of steep index for the LLAGN sample which hosted by a high fraction of elliptical galaxies, and there are no significant correlation between the $μ$ and the LLAGN types (Seyfert, LINER); (2) for $μ\approx$1, as noted in Liu et al., the accretion disk dominates the jet power and the black hole (BH) spin is not important, for the LLAGN samples studied in this paper we find that the $μ$ is significantly less than unity, implying that BH spin may play a significant role in the jet power of LLAGNs; (3) the BH spin-jet power is negatively correlated with the BH mass in our model, which means a high spin-jet efficiency in the `low' BH-mass LLAGNs; (4) an anti-correlation between radio loudness and disk luminosity is found, which is apparently due to the flatter power-law index in the jet-disk correlation of the LLAGNs, and the radio loudness can be higher in the LLAGNs than in luminous AGNs/quasars when the BH spin-jet power is comparable to or dominate over the accretion-jet power in the LLAGNs. The high radio-core dominance of the LLAGNs is also discussed.

There is growing evidence to suggest that the black hole mass has been previously underestimated with the H$β$ line width for certain active galactic nuclei (AGN). With the assumption of the flatter rather than isotropic velocity distribution of gases in the broad-line region of AGN, we investigated the properties of narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, like the black hole mass and the Eddington ratio, and compared with broad line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies. Since gamma-rays detected in a few NLS1s which favor a smaller viewing angle in NLS1s than BLS1s, with the projection effect we estimated the relative black hole mass and Eddington ratio for NLS1s and BLS1s. The result implies that the NLS1s and BLS1s have similar black hole masses and Eddington ratios, peaked at a larger black hole mass and lower Eddington ratio for the NLS1s than thought before. Furthermore, with applying the correction factor 6 of average black hole mass as derived from the modelling of both optical and UV data in radio-loud NLS1s by Calderone et al., to the Xu et al. sample, we find that the NLS1s and BLS1s also show similar black hole masses and Eddington ratios, peaked at $2.0\times10^{7}M_{\odot}$ and 0.12 (Eddington ratio) for the NLS1s. The $M_{BH}-σ$ relation due to the enhanced black hole masses of NLS1s is discussed. In addition, there seems to show a linear correlation between jet power and disk luminosity for the flat spectrum radio-loud NLS1 sample, which implies an accretion dominated rather than black hole spin dominated jet.

The mass-radius relation, the moment of inertia and the frame dragging for different frequencies are given. We found that we cannot use the strange star to solve the challenges of Stella and Vietri for the horizontal branch oscillations and the moment of inertia $I_{45}/(M/M_ s)>2.3$. Furthermore, we extended the Hartle's method to study the differential rotating strange star and found that the differential rotation is an effective way to get massive strange star.

We investigate the question of the suppression of the CMB power spectrum for the lowest multipoles in closed Universes. The intrinsic reason for a lowest cutoff in closed Universes, connected with the discrete spectrum of the wavelength, is shown not to be enough to explain observations. We investigate the question of the suppression of the CMB power spectrum for the lowest multipoles in closed Universes. The intrinsic reason for a lowest cutoff in closed Universes, connected with the discrete spectrum of the wavelength, is shown not to be enough to explain observations. We thus extend the holographic cosmic duality to closed universes by relating the dark energy equation of state and the power spectrum, showing a suppression behavior which describes the low l features extremely well. We also explore the possibility to disclose the nature of the dark energy from the observed small l CMB spectrum by employing the holographic idea.

Using the recently obtained holographic cosmic duality, we reached a reasonable quantitative agreement between predictions of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation at small l and the WMAP observations, showing the power of the holographic idea. We also got constraints on the dark energy and its behaviour as a function of the redshift upon relating it to the small l CMB spectrum. For a redshift independent dark energy, our constraint is consistent with the supernova results, which again shows the correctness of the cosmic duality prescription. We have also extended our study to the redshift dependence of the dark energy.

Abstract:
We study the possibility to probe the spatial geometry of the Universe by supernova measurement of the cubic correction to the luminosity distance. We illustrate with an accelerating universe model with infinite-volume extra dimensions, for which the 1$σ$ level supernova results indicate that the Universe is closed.

We study the massless scalar wave propagation in the time-dependent Schwarzschild black hole background. We find that the Kruskal coordinate is an appropriate framework to investigate the time-dependent spacetime. A time-dependent scattering potential is derived by considering dynamical black hole with parameters changing with time. It is shown that in the quasinormal ringing both the decay time-scale and oscillation are modified in the time-dependent background.
