We conducted a deep spectroscopic survey, named SSA22-HIT, in the SSA22 field with the DEep Imaging MultiObject Spectrograph (DEIMOS) on the Keck telescope, designed to tomographically map high-z HI gas through analysis of Lya absorption in background galaxies' spectra. In total, 198 galaxies were spectroscopically confirmed at 2.5 < z < 6 with a few low-z exceptions in the 26 x 15 arcmin^2 area, of which 148 were newly determined in this study. Our redshift measurements were merged with previously confirmed redshifts available in the 34 x 27 arcmin^2 area of the SSA22 field. This compiled catalog containing 730 galaxies of various types at z > 2 is useful for various applications, and it is made publicly available. Our SSA22-HIT survey has increased by approximately twice the number of spectroscopic redshifts of sources at z > 3.2 in the observed field. From a comparison with publicly available redshift catalogs, we show that our compiled redshift catalog in the SSA22 field is comparable to those among major extragalactic survey fields in terms of a combination of wide area and high surface number density of objects at z > 2. About 40 % of the spectroscopically confirmed objects in SSA22-HIT show reasonable quality of spectra in the wavelengths shorter than Lya when a sufficient amount of smoothing is adopted. Our data set enables us to make the HI tomographic map at z > 3, which we present in a parallel study.

Radio absorptive materials (RAMs) are key elements for receivers in the millimeter-wave range. For astronomical applications, cryogenic receivers are widely used to achieve a high-sensitivity. These cryogenic receivers, in particular the receivers for the cosmic microwave background, require that the RAM has low surface reflectance ($\lesssim 1\%$) in a wide frequency range (20--300 GHz) to minimize the undesired stray light to detectors. We develop a RAM that satisfies this requirement based on a production technology using a 3D-printed mold (named as RAM-3pm). This method allows us to shape periodic surface structures to achieve a low reflectance. A wide range of choices for the absorptive materials is an advantage. We survey the best material for the RAM-3pm. We measure the index of refraction ($n$) and the extinction coefficient ($κ$) at liquid nitrogen temperature as well as at room temperature of 17 materials. We also measure the reflectance at the room temperature for the selected materials. The mixture of an epoxy adhesive (STYCAST-2850FT) and a carbon fiber (K223HE) achieves the best performance. We estimate the optical performance at the liquid nitrogen temperature by a simulation based on the measured $n$ and $κ$. The RAM-3pm made with this material satisfies the requirement except at the lower edge of the frequency range ($\sim$20 GHz). We also estimate the reflectance of a larger pyramidal structure on the surface. We find a design to satisfy our requirement.

Using galaxies as background light sources to map intervening Lya absorption is a novel approach to study the interplay among galaxies, the circum-galactic medium (CGM), and the intergalactic medium (IGM). Introducing a new measure of z = 3.1$ HI Lya absorption relative to the cosmic mean, Delta_NB497, estimated from photometric data of star-forming galaxies at 3.3 < z < 3.5, we have made two-dimensional Delta_NB497 maps in the z = 3.1 SSA22 proto-cluster region and two control fields (SXDS and GOODS-N fields) with a spatial resolution of ~ 5 comoving Mpc. The Delta_NB497 measurements in the SSA22 field are systematically larger than those in the control fields, and this HI absorption enhancement extends more than 50 comoving Mpc. The field-averaged (i.e., ~50 comoving Mpc scale) Delta_NB497 and the overdensity of Lya emitters (LAEs) seem to be correlated, while there is no clear dependency of the Delta_NB497 on the local LAE overdensity in a few comoving Mpc scale. These results suggest that diffuse HI gas spreads out in/around the SSA22 proto-cluster. We have also found an enhancement of Delta_NB497 at a projected distance < 100 physical kpc from the nearest z = 3.1 galaxies at least in the SSA22 field, which is probably due to HI gas associated with the CGM of individual galaxies. The HI absorption enhancement in the CGM-scale tends to be weaker around galaxies with stronger Lya emission, which suggests that the Lya escape fraction from galaxies depends on hydrogen neutrality in the CGM.

Recent experimental results have confirmed a possible reduction in the GT$_+$ strengths of pf-shell nuclei. These proton-rich nuclei are of relevance in the deflagration and explosive burning phases of Type Ia supernovae. While prior GT strengths result in nucleosynthesis predictions with a lower-than-expected electron fraction, a reduction in the GT$_+$ strength can result in an slightly increased electron fraction compared to previous shell model predictions, though the enhancement is not as large as previous enhancements in going from rates computed by Fuller, Fowler, and Newman based on an independent particle model. A shell model parametrization has been developed which more closely matches experimental GT strengths. The resultant electron-capture rates are used in nucleosynthesis calculations for carbon deflagration and explosion phases of Type Ia supernovae, and the final mass fractions are compared to those obtained using more commonly-used rates.

Understanding and predicting the formation of shell structure from nuclear forces is a central challenge for nuclear physics. While the magic numbers N=2,8,20 are generally well understood, N=28 is the first standard magic number that is not reproduced in microscopic theories with two-nucleon forces. In this Letter, we show that three-nucleon forces give rise to repulsive interactions between two valence neutrons that are key to explain 48Ca as a magic nucleus, with a high 2+ excitation energy and a concentrated magnetic dipole transition strength. The repulsive three-nucleon mechanism improves the agreement with experimental binding energies.

The limit of neutron-rich nuclei, the neutron drip-line, evolves regularly from light to medium-mass nuclei except for a striking anomaly in the oxygen isotopes. This anomaly is not reproduced in shell-model calculations derived from microscopic two-nucleon forces. Here, we present the first microscopic explanation of the oxygen anomaly based on three-nucleon forces that have been established in few-body systems. This leads to repulsive contributions to the interactions among excess neutrons that change the location of the neutron drip-line from $^{28}$O to the experimentally observed $^{24}$O. Since the mechanism is robust and general, our findings impact the prediction of the most neutron-rich nuclei and the synthesis of heavy elements in neutron-rich environments.

A new shell model Hamiltonian for p-shell nuclei which properly takes into account important roles of spin-isospin interactions is used to obtain cross sections of neutrino-^12C reactions induced by decay-at-rest (DAR) neutrinos as well as supernona neutrinos. Branching ratios to various decay channels are calculated by the Hauser-Feshbach theory. Neutrino-^4He reactions are also investigated by using recent shell model Hamiltonians. The reaction cross sections are found to be enhanced for both ^12C and ^4He compared with previous calculations. As an interesting consequence of this, a possible enhancement of the production yields of light elements, ^7Li and ^11B, during supernova explosions is pointed out.
