Asteroid systems such as binaries and pairs are indicative of physical properties and dynamical histories of the Small Solar System Bodies. Although numerous observational and theoretical studies have been carried out, the formation mechanism of asteroid pairs is still unclear, especially for near-Earth asteroid (NEA) pairs. We conducted a series of optical photometric and polarimetric observations of a small NEA 2010 XC$_{15}$ in 2022 December to investigate its surface properties. The rotation period of 2010 XC$_{15}$ is possibly a few to several dozen hours and color indices of 2010 XC$_{15}$ are derived as $g-r=0.435\pm0.008$, $r-i=0.158\pm0.017$, and $r-z=0.186\pm0.009$ in the Pan-STARRS system. The linear polarization degrees of 2010 XC$_{15}$ are a few percent at the phase angle range of 58$^{\circ}$ to 114$^{\circ}$. We found that 2010 XC$_{15}$ is a rare E-type NEA on the basis of its photometric and polarimetric properties. Taking the similarity of not only physical properties but also dynamical integrals and the rarity of E-type NEAs into account, we suppose that 2010 XC$_{15}$ and 1998 WT$_{24}$ are of common origin (i.e., asteroid pair). These two NEAs are the sixth NEA pair and first E-type NEA pair ever confirmed, possibly formed by rotational fission. We conjecture that the parent body of 2010 XC$_{15}$ and 1998 WT$_{24}$ was transported from the main-belt through the $ν_6$ resonance or Hungaria region.

The asteroid (3200) Phaethon is known to be the parent body of the Geminids, although meteor showers are commonly associated with the activity of periodic comets. What is most peculiar to the asteroid is its comet-like activity in the ejection of micrometer-sized dust particles at every perihelion passage, while the activity of the asteroid has never been identified outside the near-perihelion zone at $0.14~\mathrm{au}$ from the Sun. From the theoretical point of view, we argue that the activity of the asteroid is well explained by the electrostatic lofting of micrometer-sized dust particles with the aid of mobile alkali ions at high temperatures. The mass-loss rates of micrometer-sized particles from the asteroid in our model is entirely consistent with the values inferred from visible observations of Phaethon's dust tail. For millimeter-sized particles, we predict three orders of magnitudes higher mass-loss rates, which could also account for the total mass of the Geminid meteoroid stream by the electrostatic lofting mechanism.

The investigation of asteroids near the Sun is important for understanding the final evolutionary stage of primitive solar system objects. A near-Sun asteroid, (155140) 2005 UD, has orbital elements similar to those of (3200) Phaethon (the target asteroid for the JAXA's $DESTINY^+$ mission). We conducted photometric and polarimetric observations of 2005 UD and found that this asteroid exhibits a polarization phase curve similar to that of Phaethon over a wide range of observed solar phase angles ($ α= 20 - 105^\circ $) but different from those of (101955) Bennu and (162173) Ryugu (asteroids composed of hydrated carbonaceous materials). At a low phase angle ($α\lesssim 30^\circ$), the polarimetric properties of these near-Sun asteroids (2005 UD and Phaethon) are consistent with anhydrous carbonaceous chondrites, while the properties of Bennu are consistent with hydrous carbonaceous chondrites. We derived the geometric albedo, $ p_\mathrm{V} \sim 0.1 $ (in the range of 0.088-0.109); mean $ V $-band absolute magnitude, $ H_\mathrm{V} = 17.54 \pm 0.02 $; synodic rotational period, $ T_\mathrm{rot} = 5.2388 \pm 0.0022 $ hours (the two-peaked solution is assumed); and effective mean diameter, $ D_\mathrm{eff} = 1.32 \pm 0.06 $ km. At large phase angles ($ α\gtrsim 80^\circ$), the polarization phase curve are likely explained by the dominance of large grains and the paucity of small micron-sized grains. We conclude that the polarimetric similarity of these near-Sun asteroids can be attributed to the intense solar heating of carbonaceous materials around their perihelia, where large anhydrous particles with small porosity could be produced by sintering.

The so-called Lidov-Kozai oscillation is very well known and applied to various problems in solar system dynamics. This mechanism makes the orbital inclination and eccentricity of the perturbed body in the circular restricted three-body system oscillate with a large amplitude under certain conditions. It is widely accepted that the theoretical framework of this phenomenon was established independently in the early 1960s by a Soviet Union dynamicist (Michail L'vovich Lidov) and by a Japanese celestial mechanist (Yoshihide Kozai). A large variety of studies has stemmed from the original works by Lidov and Kozai, now having the prefix of "Lidov-Kozai" or "Kozai- Lidov." However, from a survey of past literature published in late nineteenth to early twentieth century, we have confirmed that there already existed a pioneering work using a similar analysis of this subject established in that period. This was accomplished by a Swedish astronomer, Edvard Hugo von Zeipel. In this monograph, we first outline the basic framework of the circular restricted three-body problem including typical examples where the Lidov-Kozai oscillation occurs. Then, we introduce what was discussed and learned along this line of studies from the early to mid-twentieth century by summarizing the major works of Lidov, Kozai, and relevant authors. Finally, we make a summary of von Zeipel's work, and show that his achievements in the early twentieth century already comprehended most of the fundamental and necessary formulations that the Lidov-Kozai oscillation requires. By comparing the works of Lidov, Kozai, and von Zeipel, we assert that the prefix "von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai" should be used for designating this theoretical framework, and not just Lidov-Kozai or Kozai-Lidov.

Itokawa particles, which are the recovered samples from the S-complex asteroid 25143 Itokawa by the Hayabusa spacecraft, demonstrate that S-complex asteroids are parent bodies of ordinary chondrite meteorites. Furthermore, they clarify that the space weathering age of the Itokawa surface is of the order of several thousand years. Traditionally, Q-type asteroids have been considered fresh-surfaced. However, as the space weathering timescale is approximately three orders of magnitude lesser than the conventionally considered age, the previously proposed formation mechanisms of Q-type asteroids cannot sufficiently explain the surface refreshening. In this study, we propose a new hypothesis on the surface state of Q-type asteroids: Q-type asteroids have a non-fresh weathered surface with a paucity of fine particles. For verifying this hypothesis, laboratory experiments on the space weathering of ordinary chondrites are performed. Based on the results of these experiments, we found that large (more than 100 μm) ordinary chondritic particles with space weathering exhibit spectra consistent with Q-type asteroids.

The near-Earth asteroid 3200 Phaethon (1983 TB) is an attractive object not only from a scientific viewpoint but also because of JAXA's DESTINY+ target. The rotational lightcurve and spin properties were investigated based on the data obtained in the ground-based observation campaign of Phaethon. We aim to refine the lightcurves and shape model of Phaethon using all available lightcurve datasets obtained via optical observation, as well as our time-series observation data from the 2017 apparition. Using eight 1-2-m telescopes and an optical imager, we acquired the optical lightcurves and derived the spin parameters of Phaethon. We applied the lightcurve inversion method and SAGE algorithm to deduce the convex and non-convex shape model and pole orientations. We analysed the optical lightcurve of Phaethon and derived a synodic and a sidereal rotational period of 3.6039 h, with an axis ratio of a/b = 1.07. The ecliptic longitude (lambda) and latitude (beta) of the pole orientation were determined as (308, -52) and (322, -40) via two independent methods. A non-convex model from the SAGE method, which exhibits a concavity feature, is also presented.

We found that the maximum values of the linear polarization degree are $P_\mathrm{max}$=7.32$\pm$0.25 % at phase angles of $α_\mathrm{max}$=124$\pm$8 deg in the $V$-band and $P_\mathrm{max}$=7.04$\pm$0.21 % at $α_\mathrm{max}$=124$\pm$6 deg in the $R_\mathrm{C}$-band. Applying the polarimetric slope-albedo empirical law, we derived a geometric albedo of $p_\mathrm{V}$=0.25$\pm$0.02, which is in agreement with that of Q-type taxonomic asteroids. $α_\mathrm{max}$ is unambiguously larger than that of Mercury, the Moon, and another near-Earth S-type asteroid (4179) Toutatis but consistent with laboratory samples with hundreds of microns in size. The combination of the maximum polarization degree and the geometric albedo is in accordance with terrestrial rocks with a diameter of several hundreds of micrometers. The photometric function indicates a large macroscopic roughness. We hypothesize that the unique environment (i.e., the small perihelion distance $q$=0.187 au and a short rotational period of $T_\mathrm{rot}$=2.27 hours) may be attributed to the paucity of small grains on the surface, as indicated on (3200) Phaethon.

Apollo-type NEA (3200) Phaethon, classified at the B/F-type taxonomy, probably the main mass of the Phaethon-Geminid stream complex (PGC), can be the most metamorphic C-complex asteroid in our solar system, since it is heated up to ~1000 K by the solar radiation around its perihelion passages. Hence, its surface material may be easily decomposed in near-sun environment. Phaethon's spectrum exhibits extremely blue-slope in the VIS-NIR region (so-called Phaethon Blue). Another candidate large member of the PGC, (155140) 2005 UD, shows a B/F-type color, however with a C-type-like red color over its ~1/4 rotational part, which implies an exposition of less metamorphosed primordial internal structure of the PGC precursor by a splitting or breakup event long ago. If so, some rotational part of Phaethon should show the C-type color as well as 2005 UD. Hence, we carried out the time-series VIS-spectroscopic observations of Phaethon using 1-m telescope in order to detect such a signature. Also, R-band photometries were simultaneously performed in order to complement our spectroscopy. Consequently, we obtained a total of 68 VIS-spectrophotometric data, 78% of which show the B-type blue-color, as against the rest of 22% showing the C-type red-color. We successfully acquired rotationally time-resolved spectroscopic data, of which particular rotational phase shows a red-spectral slope as the C-type color, as 2005 UD does, suggesting longitudinal inhomogeneity on Phaethon's surface. We constrained this C-type red-colored area in the mid-latitude in Phaethon's southern hemisphere based on the rotationally time-resolved spectroscopy along with Phaethon's axial rotation state, of which size suggests the impact-induced origin of the PGC. We also surveyed the meteoritic analog of Phaethon's surface blue-color, and found thermally metamorphosed CI/CM chondrites as likely candidates.

We present lightcurve observations and their multiband photometry for near-Earth object (NEO) 2011 XA3. The lightcurve has shown a periodicity of 0.0304 +- 0.0003 day (= 43.8 +- 0.4 min). The fast rotation shows that 2011 XA3 is in a state of tension (i.e. a monolithic asteroid) and cannot be held together by self-gravitation. Moreover, the multiband photometric analysis indicates that the taxonomic class of 2011 XA3 is S-complex, or V-type. Its estimated effective diameter is 225 +- 97 m (S-complex) and 166 +- 63 m (V-type), respectively. Therefore, 2011 XA3 is a candidate for the second-largest fast-rotating monolithic asteroid. Moreover, the orbital parameters of 2011 XA3 are apparently similar to those of NEO (3200) Phaethon but F/B-type. We computed the orbital evolutions of 2011 XA3 and Phaethon. However, the results of the computation and distinct taxonomy indicate that neither of the asteroids is of common origin.

The quasi-Hilda comets (QHCs), being in unstable 3:2 Jovian mean motion resonance, are considered a major cause of temporary satellite capture (TSC) by Jupiter. Though the QHCs may be escaped Hilda asteroids, their origin and nature have not yet been studied in sufficient detail. Of particular interest are long TSCs/orbiters. Orbiters -- in which at least one full revolution about the planet is completed -- are rare astronomical events; only four have been known to occur in the last several decades. Every case has been associated with a QHC: 82P/Gehrels 3; 111P/Helin-Roman-Crockett; P/1996 R2 (Lagerkvist); and the possibly QHC-derived D/1993 F2 (Shoemaker-Levy 9, SL9). We focus on long TSC/orbiter events involving QHCs and Jupiter. Thus we survey the known QHCs, searching for further long TSCs/orbiters over the past century. First, we confirmed the long TSC/orbiter events of 82P, 111P, and 1996 R2 in order to test our method against previous work, applying a general N-body Newtonian code. We then used the same procedure to survey the remaining known QHCs and search for long TSC/orbiter events. We newly identified another long TSC/orbiter: 147P/Kushida-Muramatsu from 1949 May 14 (+97days/-106 days)--1961 July 15. Our result is verified by integrations of 243 cloned orbits which take account of the present orbital uncertainty of this comet. This is the third long TSC and the fifth orbiter to be found, thus long TSC/orbiter events involving Jupiter have occurred once per decade. Two full revolutions about Jupiter were completed and the capture duration was 12.17 (+0.29/-0.27) years; both these numbers rank 147P as third among long TSC/orbiter events, behind SL9 and 111P. This study also confirms the importance of the QHC region as a dynamical route into and out of Jovian TSC, via the Hill's sphere.

Specifically, their orbital evolutions show a similar profile, time shifted by only ~1000 yr, based on our time-lag theory. The dynamical relationship between Icarus and 2007 MK6 along with a possible dust band, the Taurid-Perseid meteor swarm, implies the first detection of an asteroidal NEO family, namely the "Icarus asteroid family".
