Very long baseline radio interferometry (VLBI) with ground-based observatories is limited by the size of Earth, the geographic distribution of antennas, and the transparency of the atmosphere. In this whitepaper, we present Capella, a tentative design of a space-only VLBI system. Using four small (<500 kg) satellites in two orthogonal polar low-Earth orbit planes, and single-band heterodyne receivers operating at frequencies around 690 GHz, the interferometer is able to achieve angular resolutions of approximately 7 microarcsec. Within a total observing time of three days, a near-complete uv plane coverage can be reached. The technology for all key components required for Capella - radio telescope, receiver, sampler, recorder, frequency standard, positioning system, data downlink, and pointing control system - is already available, partially off-the-shelf. Making realistic assumptions, the science payload of each satellite has a mass of about 190 kg and consumes about 460 W of power. The data from the telescopes can be correlated on the ground using dedicated versions of existing Fourier transform (FX) software correlators. With the specifications assumed in this whitepaper, Capella will be able to address a range of science cases, including: photon rings around supermassive black holes; the acceleration and collimation zones of plasma jets emitted from the vicinity of supermassive black holes; the chemical composition of accretion flows into active galactic nuclei through observations of molecular absorption lines; map** supermassive binary black holes; the magnetic activity of stars; and nova eruptions of symbiotic binary stars - and, like any substantially new observing technique, has the potential for unexpected discoveries.

We present a BVI photometric study of four old open clusters (OCs) in the Milky Way Galaxy, Czernik 30, Berkeley 34, Berkeley 75, and Berkeley 76 using the observation data obtained with the SMARTS 1.0 m telescope at the CTIO, Chile. These four OCs are located at the anti-Galactocentric direction and in the Galactic plane. We determine the fundamental physical parameters for the four OCs, such as age, metallicity, distance modulus, and color excess, using red clump and PARSEC isochrone fitting methods after finding center and size of the four OCs. These four old OCs are 2-3 Gyr old and 6 - 8 kpc away from the Sun. The metallicity ([Fe/H]) values of the four OCs are between -0.6 and 0.0 dex. We combine data for these four OCs with those for old OCs from five literatures resulting in 236 objects to investigate Galactic radial metallicity distribution. The gradient of a single linear fit for this Galactocentric [Fe/H] distribution is -0.052 +/- 0.004 dex/kpc. If we assume the existence of a discontinuity in this radial metallicity distribution, the gradient at Galactocentric radius < 12 kpc is -0.070 +/- 0.006 dex/kpc, while that at the outer part is -0.016 +/- 0.010 which is flatter than that of the inner part. Although there are not many sample clusters at the outer part, the broken linear fit seems to better follow the observation data.

We examine the ultraviolet and optical colours of 906 cluster galaxies from the KASI-Yonsei Deep Imaging Survey of Clusters (KYDISC). Galaxies have been divided into two categories, morphologically-disturbed and undisturbed galaxies, based on the visual signatures related to recent mergers. We find that galaxies with signatures of recent mergers show significantly bluer colours than undisturbed galaxies. Disturbed galaxies populate more on the cluster outskirts, suggesting recent accretion into the cluster environment, which implies that disturbed galaxies can be less influenced by the environmental quenching process and remain blue. However, we still detect bluer colours of disturbed galaxies in all locations (cluster core and outskirts) for the fixed morphology, which is difficult to understand just considering the difference in time since infall into a cluster. Moreover, blue disturbed galaxies show features seemingly related to recent star formation. Therefore, we suspect that mergers make disturbed galaxies keep their blue colour longer than undisturbed galaxies under the effect of the environmental quenching through either merger-induced star formation or central gas concentration which is less vulnerable for gas strip**.

We present the detection of RR Lyrae variable stars in the field of the Sagittarius II (Sgr II) ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy. Using B, V time-series photometry obtained with the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) 1.6 m telescope at CTIO and G-band data from Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), we identified and characterized two ab-type and four c-type RR Lyrae variables. Five out of the six stars are clustered within three half-light radii (~4.8') of the galaxy indicating their association with Sgr II, while the RRab star V4 is located ~22' from the galaxy center. By excluding V4, the high c-type fraction (0.8) and the period of the only RRab star V3 (P_V3 = 0.666 days) suggest an Oosterhoff II (Oo II) classification for Sgr II. Located close to the locus of Oo II clusters in the period-amplitude diagram, V3 is similar to RRab stars in other UFDs having Oosterhoff-intermediate and Oo II properties. Sgr II is, however, more compact than usual UFDs, placed in between star clusters and dwarf galaxies in the size-luminosity plane, and therefore spectroscopic studies are eventually required to ascertain the true nature of this stellar system. We derive the metallicity ([Fe/H]_RRab = -2.1 +- 0.3) and heliocentric distance (~64 +- 3 kpc) of Sgr II from the RR Lyrae stars, and estimate its age (~12 Gyr) based on our stellar population models. The Oosterhoff properties of UFDs can be explained with the evolution effect of RR Lyrae stars in the instability strip.

We provide a catalog of cluster galaxies that lists magnitudes, redshifts, morphologies, bulge-to-total ratios, and local density. Based on the 1409 spectroscopically-confirmed cluster galaxies brighter than -19.8 in the r-band, we study galaxy morphology, color, and visual features generated by galaxy mergers. We see a clear trend between morphological content and cluster velocity dispersion, which was not presented by previous studies using local clusters. Passive spirals are preferentially found in a highly dense region (i.e., cluster center), indicating that they have gone through the environmental quenching. In deep images (mu_r ~ 27 mag/"^2), 20% of our sample show signatures of recent mergers, which is not expected from theoretical predictions and a low frequency of ongoing mergers in our sample (~ 4%). Such a high fraction of recent mergers in the cluster environment supports a scenario that the merger events that made the features have preceded the galaxy accretion into the cluster environment. We conclude that mergers affect a cluster population mainly through the pre-processing on recently accreted galaxies.

We report the detection of RR Lyrae variable stars in Crater II, a recently discovered large and diffuse satellite dwarf galaxy of the Milky Way (MW). Based on B, V time-series photometry obtained with the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) 1.6-m telescope at CTIO, we identified 83 ab-type and 13 c-type pulsators by fitting template light curves. The detected RR Lyrae stars are centrally concentrated, which ensures that most of them are members of Crater II. In terms of the distribution of RRab stars in the period-amplitude diagram, Crater II is clearly different from ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies, but very similar to the two classical MW dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies Draco and Carina with Oosterhoff-intermediate (Oo-int) properties. Combined with the mean period of ab-type variables (<Pab> = 0.631+-0.004 d) and the c-type fraction (~0.14) in Crater II, this suggests an Oo-int classification for Crater II and implies that its nature is more like a dSph rather than a UFD. We also estimated the mean metallicity, reddening, and distance of Crater II, from the photometric and pulsation properties of the RR Lyrae stars. The stellar population model we have constructed indicates that Crater II is dominated by an old population, but is relatively younger than the oldest globular clusters in the MW. With a lack of high-amplitude short-period RRab stars, Crater II, like most of the other less massive dSphs, is probably not a surviving counterpart of the major building blocks of the MW halo.

As a case study to understand the coevolution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and their host clusters, we investigate the BCGs in dynamically young and old clusters, Abell 1139 (A1139) and Abell 2589 (A2589). We analyze the pixel color-magnitude diagrams (pCMDs) using deep g- and r-band images, obtained from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope observations. After masking foreground/background objects and smoothing pixels in consideration of the observational seeing size, detailed pCMD features are compared between the two BCGs. (1) While the overall shapes of the pCMDs are similar to those of typical early-type galaxies, the A2589-BCG tends to have redder mean pixel color and smaller pixel color deviation at given surface brightness than the A1139-BCG. (2) The mean pixel color distribution as a function of pixel surface brightness (pCMD backbone) indicates that the A2589-BCG formed a larger central body (~ 2.0 kpc in radius) by major dry mergers at an early epoch than the A1139-BCG (a central body ~ 1.3 kpc in radius), while they have grown commonly by subsequent minor mergers. (3) The spatial distributions of the pCMD outliers reveal that the A1139-BCG experienced considerable tidal events more recently than the A2589-BCG, whereas the A2589-BCG has an asymmetric compact core possibly resulting from major dry merger at an early epoch. (4) The A2589-BCG shows a very large faint-to-bright pixel number ratio compared to early-type non-BCGs, whereas the ratio for the A1139-BCG is not distinctively large. These results are consistent with the idea that the BCG in the dynamically older cluster (A2589) formed earlier and is relaxed better.

We present a BVI optical photometric study of the old open cluster Ruprecht 6 using the data obtained with the SMARTS 1.0 m telescope at the CTIO, Chile. Its color-magnitude diagrams show the clear existence of the main-sequence stars, of which turn-off point is located around V ~ 18.45 mag and B-V ~ 0.85 mag. Three red clump (RC) stars are identified at V = 16.00 mag, I = 14.41 mag and B-V = 1.35 mag. From the mean Ks-band magnitude of RC stars (Ks=12.39 +- 0.21 mag) in Ruprecht 6 from 2MASS photometry and the known absolute magnitudes of the RC stars (M_Ks = -1.595 +- 0.025 mag), we obtain the distance modulus to Ruprecht 6 (m-M)_0 = 13.84 +- 0.21 mag (d=5.86 +- 0.60 kpc). From the (J-K_s) and (B-V) colors of the RC stars, comparison of the (B-V) and (V-I) colors of the bright stars in Ruprecht 6 with those of the intrinsic colors of dwarf and giant stars, and the PARSEC isochrone fittings, we derive the reddening values of E(B-V) = 0.42 mag and E(V-I) = 0.60 mag. Using the PARSEC isochrone fittings onto the color-magnitude diagrams, we estimate the age and metallicity to be: log (t) =9.50 +- 0.10 (t =3.16 +- 0.82 Gyr) and [Fe/H] = -0.42 +- 0.04 dex. We present the Galactocentric radial metallicity gradient analysis for old (age > 1 Gyr) open clusters of Dias et al. catalog, which likely follow a single relation of [Fe/H] =(-0.034 +- 0.007) R_GC + (0.190 +- 0.080) (rms = 0.201) for the whole radial range or dual relation of [Fe/H] =(-0.077 +- 0.017) R_GC + (0.609 +- 0.161) (rms = 0.152) and constant ([Fe/H] ~ -0.3 dex) value, inside and outside of R_GC ~ 12 kpc, respectively. The metallicity and Galactocentric radius (13.28 +- 0.54 kpc) of Ruprecht 6 obtained in this study seem to be consistent with both of the relations.

We present [Fe II] 1.644 um features around ultracompact H II regions (UCHIIs) found on a quest for the "footprint" outflow features of UCHIIs---the feature produced by the outflowing materials ejected during the earlier, active accretion phase of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). We surveyed 237 UCHIIs in the 1st Galactic quadrant, employing the CORNISH UCHII catalog and UWIFE data which is an imaging survey in [Fe II] 1.644 um performed with UKIRT-WFCAM under ~ 0.8" seeing condition. The [Fe II] features were found around five UCHIIs, one of which is of low plausibility. We interpret that the [Fe II] features are shock-excited by outflows from YSOs, and estimate the outflow mass loss rates from the [Fe II] flux, which are ~ 1 x 10^-6 - 4 x 10^-5 Ms yr^-1. We propose that the [Fe II] features might be the "footprint" outflow features, but more studies are required to clarify it. This is based on the morphological relation between the [Fe II] and 5 GHz radio features, the outflow mass loss rate, the travel time of the [Fe II] features, and the existence of several YSO candidates near the UCHIIs. The UCHIIs accompanying the [Fe II] features have a relatively higher peak flux density. The fraction of UCHIIs accompanying the [Fe II] features, 5/237, is small when compared to the ~ 90 % detection rate of high-velocity CO gas around UCHIIs. We discuss some possible explanations on the low detection rate.

The [Fe II] 1.644 μm emission is a good tracer of dense, shock-excited gas, and the survey will probe violent environments around stars: star-forming regions, evolved stars, and supernova remnants, among others. The UWIFE survey is designed to complement the existing UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for H2 (UWISH2; Froebrich et al. 2011). The survey will also complement existing broad-band surveys. The observed images have a nominal 5σ detection limit of 18.7 mag for point sources, with the median seeing of 0.83". For extended sources, we estimate surface brightness limit of 8.1 x 10$^{-20}$ W m$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$ . In this paper, we present the overview and preliminary results of this survey.

Using deep archival images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have identified a sample of RR Lyrae candidates in both dTrans galaxies [219 RRab (RR0) and 13 RRc (RR1) variables in ESO294-G010; 225 RRab and 44 RRc stars in ESO410-G005]. The metallicities of the individual RRab stars are calculated via the period-amplitude-[Fe/H] relation derived by Alcock et al. This yields mean metallicities of <[Fe/H]>_{ESO294} = -1.77 +/- 0.03 and <[Fe/H]>_{ESO410} = -1.64 +/- 0.03. The RRL metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) are investigated further via simple chemical evolution models; these reveal the relics of the early chemical enrichment processes for these two dTrans galaxies. In the case of both galaxies, the shapes of the RRL MDFs are well-described by pre-enrichment models. This suggests two possible channels for the early chemical evolution for these Sculptor group dTrans galaxies: 1) The ancient stellar populations of our target dwarf galaxies might have formed from the star forming gas which was already enriched through "prompt initial enrichment" or an "initial nucleosynthetic spike" from the very first massive stars, or 2) this pre-enrichment state might have been achieved by the end products from more evolved systems of their nearest neighbor, NGC 55.

The observations were performed with IRIS2 of Anglo-Australian Telescope and the seeing was ~1.5"+-0.5". Eleven jet and outflow features are detected at eight different regions, and are named as Ionized Fe Objects (IFOs). One Herbig-Haro object candidate missed in Hubble Space Telescope Hα observations is newly identified as HHc-16, referring our [Fe II] images. IFOs have knotty or longish shapes, and the detection rate of IFOs against previously identified YSOs is 1.4 %, which should be treated as a lower limit. Four IFOs show an anti-correlated peak intensities in [Fe II] and Hα, where the ratio I([Fe II])/I(Hα) is higher for longish IFOs than for knotty IFOs. We estimate the outflow mass loss rate from the [Fe II] flux, using two different methods. The jet-driving objects are identified for three IFOs (IFO-2, -4, and -7), for which we study the relations between the outflow mass loss rate and the YSO physical parameters from the radiative transfer model fitting. The ratios of the outflow mass loss rate over the disk accretion rate are consistent for IFO-4 and -7 with the previously reported values (10^-2-10^+1), while it is higher for IFO-2. This excess may be from the underestimation of the disk accretion rate. The jet-driving objects are likely to be low- or intermediate-mass stars. Other YSO physical parameters, such as luminosity and age, show reasonable relations or trends.

Several studies have reported the presence of sodium excess objects that have neutral atomic absorption lines at 5895A (NaD) and 8190A that are deeper than expected based on stellar population models. van Dokkum & Conroy proposed that low-mass stars are more prevalent in massive early-type galaxies, which may lead to a strong NaI8190 line strength. It is, however, necessary to test this prediction against other prominent line indices in optical wavelengths. We newly identified roughly a thousand NaD excess objects (NEOs) based on the NaD line strength in the redshift range 0.00<z<0.08 from the SDSS DR7. The novelty of this work is that galaxies were carefully identified through direct visual inspection of SDSS images, and we systematically compared the properties of NEOs and those of a control sample of normal galaxies. Note that the majority of galaxies with high velocity dispersion (>250km/s) show NaD excess. Most late-type NEOs have strong Hb line strengths and significant emission lines. This implies that the presence of ISM and/or dust contributes to the increase in NaD line strengths observed for these galaxies. In contrast, the majority of early-type NEOs are predominantly luminous and massive systems. However, we find that models used to reproduce the NaI8190 line strengths that adopt a bottom-heavy IMF are not able to reproduce the observed NaD line strengths. By comparing the observed NaD, Mgb and Fe5270 line strengths with those of the models, we identify a plausible range of parameters. In these models, the majority of early-type NEOs are alpha-enhanced ([a/Fe]~0.3), metal-rich ([Z/H]~0.3) and especially Na-enhanced ([Na/Fe]~0.3). Enhanced Na abundance is a particularly compelling hypothesis for the increase in the strength of the NaD line index in our early-type NEOs that appear devoid of dust, both in their SDSS images and spectra.

We present a study of correlations between the elemental abundances and galaxy morphologies of 91 blue compact galaxies (BCGs) at z=0.20-0.35 with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 data. We classify the morphologies of the galaxies as either 'disturbed' or 'undisturbed', by visual inspection of the SDSS images, and using the Gini coefficient and M_20. We derive oxygen and nitrogen abundances using the T_e method. We find that a substantial fraction of BCGs with disturbed morphologies, indicative of merger remnants, show relatively high N/O and low O/H abundance ratios. The majority of the disturbed BCGs exhibit higher N/O values at a given O/H value compared to the morphologically undisturbed galaxies, implying more efficient nitrogen enrichment in disturbed BCGs. We detect Wolf-Rayet (WR) features in only a handful of the disturbed BCGs, which appears to contradict the idea that WR stars are responsible for high nitrogen abundance. Combining these results with Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) GR6 ultraviolet (UV) data, we find that the majority of the disturbed BCGs show systematically lower values of the H alpha to near-UV star formation rate ratio. The equivalent width of the H beta emission line is also systematically lower in the disturbed BCGs. Based on these results, we infer that disturbed BCGs have undergone star formation over relatively longer time scales, resulting in a more continuous enrichment of nitrogen. We suggest that this correlation between morphology and chemical abundances in BCGs is due to a difference in their recent star formation histories.

The sizes of galaxies are known to be closely related with their masses, luminosities, redshifts and morphologies. However, when we fix these quantities and morphology, we still find large dispersions in the galaxy size distribution. We investigate the origin of these dispersions for red early-type galaxies, using two SDSS-based catalogs. We find that the sizes of faint galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) < 10.3 or M_r > -19.5, where M_r is the r-band absolute magnitude, k-corrected to z = 0.1) are affected more significantly by luminosity, while the sizes of bright galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) > 11.4 or M_r < -21.4) are by dynamical mass. At fixed mass and luminosity, the sizes of low-mass galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) ~ 10.45 and M_r ~ -19.8) are relatively less sensitive to their colors, color gradients and axis ratios. On the other hand, the sizes of intermediate-mass (log(M_dyn/M_sun) ~ 10.85 and M_r ~ -20.4) and high-mass (log(M_dyn/M_sun) ~ 11.25 and M_r ~ -21.0) galaxies significantly depend on those parameters, in the sense that larger red early-type galaxies have bluer colors, more negative color gradients (bluer outskirts) and smaller axis ratios. These results indicate that the sizes of intermediate- and high-mass red early-type galaxies are significantly affected by their recent minor mergers or rotations, whereas the sizes of low-mass red early-type galaxies are affected by some other mechanisms. Major dry mergers also seem to have influenced on the size growth of high-mass red early-type galaxies.

We present a comprehensive photometric study of the old open cluster, NGC 6819 using 1x1 degree field VI MOSAIC CCD imaging taken with the WIYN 0.9m telescope. The resultant color-magnitude diagram (CMD) shows a well developed main sequence (MS) extending from V~14.5 mag down to our photometric limit of V~21 mag. Fitting theoretical isochrones with adopted values of the reddening and metallicity (E(B-V)=0.14, [Fe/H]=+0.09 dex) to the observed CMD yields a distance modulus of (m-M)_{0}=11.93+/-0.10 and an age of ~2.6 Gyr for NGC 6819. Our wide-field imaging reveals that NGC 6819 is larger in areal extent (R=13') than previously thought. The wide-field also benefits our estimate of the degree of field star contamination, and ultimately yields improved measurements of the structural parameters (r_c=2.80', r_t=38.2', and r_h=7') and tidal mass of the cluster (M_{tid}=3542.4 M(sun)). The flattened luminosity and mass functions indicate that NGC 6819 has experienced mass segregation as a result of its dynamical evolution. Our variability study of the cluster blue straggler star (BSS) population using the Welch-Stetson variability index (I_{WS}) has revealed a number of variable BSS candidates.

This includes 544 astronomy papers that comprise 7.0% of the papers in `all' research fields and 18.9% of those in the fields of `physical sciences'. The sub-fields of research of the astronomy papers are distributed, in descending order of number of papers, in Solar System, stellar astronomy, galaxies and the universe, the Milky Way Galaxy, and exoplanets. The observational facilities used for the studies are mainly ground-based telescopes (31.1%), spacecrafts (27.0%), and space telescopes (22.8%), while 16.0% of papers did not use any noticeable facilities and 1.7% used other facilities. Korean scientists have published 86 papers (33 in Nature and 53 in Science), which is 1.10% of all the papers (N=7788) in the two journals. The share of papers by Korean astronomers among the scientific papers by Koreans is 8.14%, slightly higher than the contribution of astronomy papers (7.0%) in both journals.

We report the properties of the interacting S0 galaxy NGC 5195 (M51B), revealed in a pixel analysis using the HST/ACS images in the F435W, F555W and F814W (BVI) bands. We analyze the pixel color-magnitude diagram (pCMD) of NGC 5195, focusing on the properties of its red and blue pixel sequences and the difference from the pCMD of NGC 5194 (M51A; the spiral galaxy interacting with NGC 5195). The red pixel sequence of NGC 5195 is redder than that of NGC 5194, which corresponds to the difference in the dust optical depth of 2<Δτ_V<4 at fixed age and metallicity. The blue pixel sequence of NGC 5195 is very weak and spatially corresponds to the tidal bridge between the two interacting galaxies. This implies that the blue pixel sequence is not an ordinary feature in the pCMD of an early-type galaxy, but that it is a transient feature of star formation caused by the galaxy-galaxy interaction. We also find a difference in the shapes of the red pixel sequences on the pixel color-color diagrams (pCCDs) of NGC 5194 and NGC 5195. We investigate the spatial distributions of the pCCD-based pixel stellar populations. The young population fraction in the tidal bridge area is larger than that in other areas by a factor > 15. Along the tidal bridge, young populations seem to be clumped particularly at the middle point of the bridge. On the other hand, the dusty population shows a relatively wide distribution between the tidal bridge and the NGC 5195 center.

We present the ultraviolet (UV) color-color relation of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the nearby universe (0.05 < z < 0.12) to investigate the properties of hot stellar populations responsible for the UV excess (UVX). The initial sample of ETGs is selected by the spectroscopic redshift and the morphology parameter from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7, and then cross-matched with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Far-UV (FUV) and Near-UV (NUV) GR6 data. The cross-matched ETG sample is further classified by their emission line characteristics in the optical spectra into quiescent, star-forming, and AGN categories. Contaminations from early-type spiral galaxies, mergers, and morphologically disturbed galaxies are removed by visual inspection. By drawing the FUV - NUV (as a measure of UV spectral shape) vs. FUV - r (as a measure of UVX strength) diagram for the final sample of ~3700 quiescent ETGs, we find that the "old and dead" ETGs consist of a well-defined sequence in UV colors, the "UV red sequence", so that the stronger UVX galaxies should have a harder UV spectral shape systematically. However, the observed UV spectral slope is too steep to be reproduced by the canonical stellar population models in which the UV flux is mainly controlled by age or metallicity parameters. Moreover, 2 mag of color spreads both in FUV - NUV and FUV - r appear to be ubiquitous among any subsets in distance or luminosity. This implies that the UVX in ETGs could be driven by yet another parameter which might be even more influential than age or metallicity.

We present a photometric estimation of the distance and reddening values to the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1156, which is one of the best targets to study the isolated dwarf galaxies in the nearby universe. We have used the imaging data sets of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) High Resolution Channel (HRC) of the central region of NGC 1156 (26" X 29") available in the HST archive for this study. From the (U-B, B-V) color-color diagram, we first estimate the total (foreground + internal) reddening toward NGC 1156 of E(B-V) =0.35 +/- 0.05 mag, whereas only the foreground reddening was previously known to be E(B-V)=0.16 mag (Burstein & Heiles) or 0.24 mag (Schlegel, Finkbeiner, & Davis). Based on the brightest stars method, selecting the three brightest blue supergiant (BSG) stars with mean B magnitude of <B(3B)> = 21.94 mag and the three brightest red supergiant (RSG) stars with mean V magnitude of <V(3R)> = 22.76 mag, we derive the distance modulus to NGC 1156 to be (m-M)_{0,BSG} = 29.55 mag and (m-M)_{0,RSG} = 29.16 mag. By using weights of 1 and 1.5 for the distance moduli from using the BSGs and the RSGs, respectively, we finally obtain the weighted mean distance modulus to NGC 1156 (m-M)_0 = 29.39 +/- 0.20 mag (d = 7.6 +/- 0.7 Mpc), which is in very good agreement with the previous estimates. Combining the photometry data of this study with those of Karachentsev et al. gives smaller distance to NGC 1156, which is discussed together with the limits of the data.

A pixel analysis is carried out on the interacting face-on spiral galaxy NGC 5194 (M51A), using the HST/ACS images in the F435W, F555W and F814W (BVI) bands. After 4x4 binning of the HST/ACS images to secure a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio for each pixel, we derive several quantities describing the pixel color-magnitude diagram (pCMD) of NGC 5194: blue/red color cut, red pixel sequence parameters, blue pixel sequence parameters and blue-to-red pixel ratio. The red sequence pixels are mostly older than 1 Gyr, while the blue sequence pixels are mostly younger than 1 Gyr, in their luminosity-weighted mean stellar ages. The color variation in the red pixel sequence from V = 20 mag arcsec^(-2) to V = 17 mag arcsec^(-2) corresponds to a metallicity variation of Δ[Fe/H] ~ 2 or an optical depth variation of Δτ_V ~ 4 by dust, but the actual sequence is thought to originate from the combination of those two effects. At V < 20 mag arcsec^(-2), the color variation in the blue pixel sequence corresponds to an age variation from 5 Myr to 300 Myr under the assumption of solar metallicity and τ_V = 1. To investigate the spatial distributions of stellar populations, we divide pixel stellar populations using the pixel color-color diagram and population synthesis models. As a result, we find that the pixel population distributions across the spiral arms agree with a compressing process by spiral density waves: dense dust \rightarrow newly-formed stars. The tidal interaction between NGC 5194 and NGC 5195 appears to enhance the star formation at the tidal bridge connecting the two galaxies. We find that the pixels corresponding to the central active galactic nucleus (AGN) area of NGC 5194 show a tight sequence at the bright-end of the pCMD, which are in the region of R ~ 100 pc and may be a photometric indicator of AGN properties.

TAOS is designed for the detection of stellar occultation by small-size Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) and is operating four 50cm telescopes at an effective cadence of 5Hz. The four telescopes simultaneously monitor the same patch of the sky in order to reduce false positives. To detect short-period variables, we used the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm (FFT) inasmuch as the data points in TAOS light-curves are evenly spaced. Using FFT, we found 41 short-period variables with amplitudes smaller than a few hundredths of a magnitude and periods of about an hour, which suggest that they are low-amplitude delta Scuti stars (LADS). The light-curves of TAOS delta Scuti stars are accessible online at the Time Series Center website (http://timemachine.iic.harvard.edu)
