Abstract:
We present the census of H$β$+[O III] $4960,5008$ Åemitters at $6.8<z<9.0$ from the JWST FRESCO survey over 124 arcmin$^2$ in the GOODS-North and GOODS-South fields. Our unbiased spectroscopic search results in 137 spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies at $6.8<z<9.0$ with observed [O III] fluxes $f_{[O III]}\gtrsim 1\times 10^{-18}\ \rm{erg}\ \rm{s}^{-1} \ \rm{cm}^{-2}$. The rest-frame optical line ratios of the median stacked spectrum indicate negligible dust attenuation, low metallicity ($12+\log(\rm{O/H})= 7.2-7.7$) and a high ionisation parameter $\log_{10}U \simeq -2.5$ at a median UV magnitude $M_{\rm{UV}}=-19.65^{+0.59}_{-1.05}$. We find a factor $\times\ 1.3$ difference in the number density of $6.8<z<9.0$ galaxies between GOODS-South and GOODS-North, which is caused by single overdensity at $7.0<z<7.2$ in GOODS-North. The bright end of the UV luminosity function of spectroscopically-confirmed [O III] emitters is in good agreement with that from pre-JWST dropout-selected samples. Discrepancies between the observed [O III] LF, [O III] /UV ratio and [O III] equivalent widths distribution and that predicted by theoretical models suggest burstier star-formation histories and/or more heterogeneous metallicity and ionising conditions in $z>7$ galaxies. We report a rapid decline of the [O III] luminosity density at $z\gtrsim 6-7$ which cannot be explained solely by the evolution of the cosmic star-formation rate density. Finally, we find that FRESCO, in only $2$h, captures star-forming galaxies likely accounting for $\sim 10-20\%$ of the ionising budget at $z=7$ and $z=8$, raising the prospect of detecting directly all the sources of reionisation with JWST.

We present the first results on the spatial distribution of star formation in 454 star-forming galaxies at $4.8<z<6.5$ using H-Alpha emission-line maps and F444W imaging tracing the stellar continuum from the JWST FRESCO NIRCam Slitless Spectroscopy Survey. Star-forming galaxies with stellar masses $6.8\leq$log($M_{*}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$)$<11.1$ have positive H-Alpha equivalent width profiles, providing direct evidence for the inside-out growth of galaxies just after the epoch of reionisation. GALFIT is used to calculate half-light radii, $R_{\mathrm{eff}}$ and central surface densities within 1 kiloparsec, $Σ_{1\mathrm{kpc}}$ of H-Alpha and the continuum. At a fixed stellar mass of log$(M_{*}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})=9.5$, $Σ_{1\mathrm{kpc, H}α}$ is $1.3\pm0.1$ times higher than $Σ_{1\mathrm{kpc, C}}$ with consistent H-Alpha and continuum $R_{\mathrm{eff}}$ that are both less than 1 kpc. These measurements suggest the rapid build up of compact bulges without a significant increase in their radii. By comparing to work done at lower redshifts with HST WFC3 Slitless Spectroscopy as part of the 3D-HST ($z=1$) and CLEAR ($z=0.5$) surveys, we find that $R_{\mathrm{eff}}(z)$ and $Σ_{1\mathrm{kpc}}(z)$ evolve faster with redshift for H-Alpha. As a function of the Hubble parameter, $\frac{R_{\mathrm{eff, H}α}}{R_{\mathrm{eff, C}}}=1.1h(z)^{-0.1}$ and $\frac{Σ_{1\mathrm{kpc,H}α}}{Σ_{1\mathrm{kpc,C}}}=h(z)^{0.3}$. These functions indicate there is a transition point at $2<z<4$ where the inside-out growth of the disk starts to dominate over the inside-out growth of the bulge towards lower redshifts. This is supported by the redshift evolution in EW(H$α$) profiles, where there is rapid increase in EW(H$α$) with radius within the half-light radius at $z=5.3$ but only significantly increasing EW(H$α$) with radius in the outer disk at $z=0.5$.

This paper utilizes the JWST MIRI multi-band imaging data from the SMILES survey (5-25micron), complemented with HST and NIRCam photometric and spectroscopic data from the JADES and FRESCO surveys for 443 star-forming (non-AGN) galaxies at z=0.7-2.0 to extend the study of dust and PAH emission to a new mass and SFR parameter space beyond our local universe. We find a strong correlation between the fraction of dust in PAHs (PAH fraction, q_PAH) with stellar mass. Moreover, the PAH fraction behavior as a function of gas-phase metallicity is similar to that at z~0 from previous studies, suggesting a universal relation: q_PAH is constant (~3.4%) above a metallicity of ~ 0.5$Z_{\odot}$ and decreases to <1% at metallicities $<0.3Z_{\odot}$. This indicates that metallicity is a good indicator of the ISM properties that affect the balance between the formation and destruction of PAHs. The lack of a redshift evolution from z~0-2 also implies that above $0.5\,Z_{\odot}$, the PAH emission effectively traces obscured luminosity and the previous locally-calibrated PAH-SFR calibrations remain applicable in this metallicity regime. We observe a strong correlation between obscured UV luminosity fraction (ratio of obscured to total luminosity) and stellar mass. Above the stellar mass of $>5\times 10^9M_{\odot}$, on average, more than half of the emitted luminosity is obscured, while there exists a non-negligible population of lower mass galaxies with >50% obscured fractions. At a fixed mass, the obscured fraction correlates with SFR surface density. This is a result of higher dust covering fractions in galaxies with more compact star forming regions. Similarly, galaxies with high IRX (IR to UV luminosity) at a given mass or UV continuum slope tend to have higher SFR surface density and shallower attenuation curves, owing to their higher effective dust optical depths and more compact star forming regions.

Characterising the prevalence and properties of faint active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the early Universe is key for understanding the formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and determining their role in cosmic reionization. We perform a spectroscopic search for broad H$α$ emitters at $z\approx4-6$ using deep JWST/NIRCam imaging and wide field slitless spectroscopy from the EIGER and FRESCO surveys. We identify 20 H$α$ lines at $z=4.2-5.5$ that have broad components with line widths from $\sim1200-3700$ km s$^{-1}$, contributing $\sim30-90$ % of the total line flux. We interpret these broad components as being powered by accretion onto SMBHs with implied masses $\sim10^{7-8}$ M$_{\odot}$. In the UV luminosity range M$_{\rm UV}=-21$ to $-18$, we measure number densities of $\approx10^{-5}$ cMpc$^{-3}$. This is an order of magnitude higher than expected from extrapolating quasar UV luminosity functions. Yet, such AGN are found in only $<1$ % of star-forming galaxies at $z\sim5$. The SMBH mass function agrees with large cosmological simulations. In two objects we detect narrow red- and blue-shifted H$α$ absorption indicative, respectively, of dense gas fueling SMBH growth and outflows. We may be witnessing early AGN feedback that will clear dust-free pathways through which more massive blue quasars are seen. We uncover a strong correlation between reddening and the fraction of total galaxy luminosity arising from faint AGN. This implies that early SMBH growth is highly obscured and that faint AGN are only minor contributors to cosmic reionization.

The physical conditions giving rise to high escape fractions of ionizing radiation (LyC $f_{\rm{esc}}$) in star-forming galaxies - most likely protagonists of cosmic reionization - are not yet fully understood. Using the VLT/MUSE observations of ~1400 Ly$α$ emitters at 2.9 < z < 6.7, we compare stacked rest-frame UV spectra of candidates for LyC leakers and non-leakers selected based on their Ly$α$ profiles. We find that the stacks of potential LyC leakers, i.e. galaxies with narrow, symmetric Ly$α$ profiles with small peak separation, generally show (i) strong nebular OIII]1666, [SiIII]1883, and [CIII]1907+CIII]1909 emission, indicating a high-ionization state of the interstellar medium (ISM); (ii) high equivalent widths of HeII1640 (~1-3 A), suggesting the presence of hard ionizing radiation fields; (iii) SiII*1533 emission, revealing substantial amounts of neutral hydrogen off the line of sight; (iv) high CIV1548,1550 to [CIII]1907+CIII]1909 ratios (CIV/CIII] > 0.75), signalling the presence of low column density channels in the ISM. In contrast, the stacks with broad, asymmetric Ly$α$ profiles with large peak separation show weak nebular emission lines, low HeII1640 equivalent widths (<1 A), and low CIV/CIII] (<0.25), implying low-ionization states and high-neutral hydrogen column densities. Our results suggest that CIV/CIII] might be sensitive to the physical conditions that govern LyC photon escape, providing a promising tool for identification of ionizing sources among star-forming galaxies in the epoch of reionization.

We present the JWST Cycle 1 53.8hr medium program FRESCO, short for "First Reionization Epoch Spectroscopically Complete Observations". FRESCO covers 62 arcmin$^2$ in each of the two GOODS/CANDELS fields for a total area of 124 arcmin$^2$ exploiting JWST's powerful new grism spectroscopic capabilities at near-infrared wavelengths. By obtaining ~2 hr deep NIRCam/grism observations with the F444W filter, FRESCO yields unprecedented spectra at R~1600 covering 3.8 to 5.0 $μ$m for most galaxies in the NIRCam field-of-view. This setup enables emission line measurements over most of cosmic history, from strong PAH lines at z~0.2-0.5, to Pa$α$ and Pa$β$ at z~1-3, HeI and [SIII] at z~2.5-4.5, H$α$ and [NII] at z~5-6.5, up to [OIII] and H$β$ for z~7-9 galaxies, and possibly even [OII] at z~10-12. FRESCO's grism observations provide total line fluxes for accurately estimating galaxy stellar masses and calibrating slit-loss corrections of NIRSpec/MSA spectra in the same field. Additionally, FRESCO results in a mosaic of F182M, F210M, and F444W imaging in the same fields to a depth of ~28.2 mag (5 $σ$ in 0.32" diameter apertures). Together with this publication, the v1 imaging mosaics are released as high-level science products via MAST. Here, we describe the overall survey design and the key science goals that can be addressed with FRESCO. We also highlight several, early science results, including: spectroscopic redshifts of Lyman break galaxies that were identified almost 20 years ago, the discovery of broad-line active galactic nuclei at z>4, and resolved Pa$α$ maps of galaxies at z~1.4. These results demonstrate the enormous power for serendipitous discovery of NIRCam/grism observations.

Within the MOJAVE VLBA program (Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments), we have accumulated observational data at 15 GHz for hundreds of jets in $γ$-ray bright active galactic nuclei since the beginning of the Fermi scientific observations in August 2008. We investigated a time delay between the flux density of AGN parsec-scale radio emission at 15 GHz and 0.1$-$300 GeV Fermi LAT photon flux, taken from constructed light curves using weekly and adaptive binning. The correlation analysis shows that radio is lagging $γ$-ray radiation by up to 8 months in the observer's frame, while in the source frame, the typical delay is about 2-3 months. If the jet radio emission, excluding the opaque core, is considered, significant correlation is found at greater time lags. We supplement these results with VLBI kinematics and core shift data to conclude that the dominant high-energy production zone is typically located at a distance of several parsecs from the central nucleus. We also found that quasars have on average more significant correlation peak, more distant $γ$-ray emission region from the central engine and shorter variability time scale compared to those of BL Lacertae objects.
