The Chasing All Transients Constellation Hunters (CATCH) space mission is an intelligent constellation consisting of 126 micro-satellites in three types (A, B, and C), designed for X-ray observation with the objective of studying the dynamic universe. Currently, we are actively develo** the first Pathfinder (CATCH-1) for the CATCH mission, specifically for type-A satellites. CATCH-1 is equipped with Micro Pore Optics (MPO) and a 4-pixel Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) array. To assess its scientific performance, including the effective area of the optical system, on-orbit background, and telescope sensitivity, we employ the Monte Carlo software Geant4 for simulation in this study. The MPO optics exhibit an effective area of $41$ cm$^2$ at the focal spot for 1 keV X-rays, while the entire telescope system achieves an effective area of $29$ cm$^2$ at 1 keV when taking into account the SDD detector's detection efficiency. The primary contribution to the background is found to be from the Cosmic X-ray Background. Assuming a 625 km orbit with an inclination of $29^\circ$, the total background for CATCH-1 is estimated to be $8.13\times10^{-2}$ counts s$^{-1}$ in the energy range of 0.5--4 keV. Based on the background within the central detector and assuming a Crab-like source spectrum, the estimated ideal sensitivity could achieve $1.9\times10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ for an exposure of 10$^4$ s in the energy band of 0.5--4 keV. Furthermore, after simulating the background caused by low-energy charged particles near the geomagnetic equator, we have determined that there is no need to install a magnetic deflector.

It has been more than 30 years since the enigmatic 21 μm emission feature was first discovered in protoplanetary nebulae (PPNs). Although dozens of different dust carrier candidates have been proposed, there is as yet no widely accepted one. We present the results of molecular observations toward 21μm objects using the 10m Submillimeter Telescope of Arizona Radio Observatory at the 1.3 mm band and the 13.7 m telescope of Purple Mountain Observatory at the 3mm band, aiming to investigate whether the gas-phase environments of these unusual sources have some peculiarities compared to normal PPNs. We detect 31 emission lines belonging to seven different molecular species, most of which are the first detection in 21 μm PPNs. The observations provide clues on the identification of the 21 μm feature. We report a correlation study between the fractional abundance of gas-phase molecules and the strengths of the 21 μm emission. Our study shows that given the small sample size, the 21 μm feature has weak or no correlations with the gas-phase molecules. Future radio observations of high spatial and spectral resolution toward a large sample are desirable to elucidate the 21 μm emission phenomena.

TianQin is a proposed space-based gravitational wave detector designed to operate in circular high Earth orbits. As a sequel to [Zhang et al. Phys. Rev. D 103, 062001 (2021)], this work provides an analytical model to account for the perturbing effect of the Earth's gravity field on the range acceleration noise between two TianQin satellites. For such an ``orbital noise,'' the Earth's contribution dominates above $5\times 10^{-5}$ Hz in the frequency spectrum, and the noise calibration and mitigation, if needed, can benefit from in-depth noise modeling. Our model derivation is based on Kaula's theory of satellite gravimetry with Fourier-style decomposition, and uses circular reference orbits as an approximation. To validate the model, we compare the analytical and numerical results in two main scenarios. First, in the case of the Earth's static gravity field, both noise spectra are shown to agree well with each other at various orbital inclinations and radii, confirming our previous numerical work while providing more insight. Second, the model is extended to incorporate the Earth's time-variable gravity. Particularly relevant to TianQin, we augment the formulas to capture the disturbance from the Earth's free oscillations triggered by earthquakes, of which the mode frequencies enter TianQin's measurement band above 0.1 mHz. The analytical model may find applications in gravity environment monitoring and noise-reduction pipelines for TianQin.

We present an analytic solution for accretion of a gaseous medium with adiabatic equation of state onto a charged dilaton black hole which moves at a constant velocity. We determine the four-velocity of accreted flow and find that it possesses axial symmetry. We obtain the particle number density and the accretion rate which depend on the mass, the magnetic charge, and the dilation of black hole, meaning that these parameters take important roles in the process of accretion. Possible theoretical and observational constraints on the parameter related to the dilation are discussed. The results may help us to get deeper understanding of the behavior of accreted flow near the event horizon of black hole.

The XENON1T excess of keV electron recoil events may be induced by the scattering of electrons and long-lived particles with MeV mass and high-speed. We consider a tangible model composed of two scalar MeV dark matter (DM) particles $S_A$ and $S_B$ to interpret the XENON1T keV excess via boosted $S_B$. A small mass splitting $m_{S_A}-m_{S_B}>0$ is introduced and the boosted $S_B$ can be produced by the dark annihilation process of $S_A S_A^\dagger \to φ\to S_B S_B^\dagger$ via a resonant scalar $φ$. The $S_B-$electron scattering is intermediated by a vector boson $X$. Although the constraints from BBN, CMB and low-energy experiments set the $X-$mediated $S_B-$electron scattering cross section to be $\lesssim 10^{-35} \mathrm{cm}^2$, the MeV scale DM with a resonance enhanced dark annihilation today can still provide enough boosted $S_B$ and induce the XENON1T keV excess. The relic density of $S_B$ is significantly reduced by the $s$-wave process of $S_B S_B^\dagger \to X X$ which is allowed by the constraints from CMB and 21-cm absorption. A very small relic fraction of $S_B$ is compatible with the stringent bounds on un-boosted $S_B$-electron scattering in DM direct detection and the $S_A$-electron scattering is also allowed.

Results. Fifteen lines are detected in NGC 1068, eight of which are new detections for this galaxy. We derive the rotation temperatures and column densities of fourteen molecular species. Conclusions. Based on the [HCO+ (2 - 1)]/[HOC+ (2 - 1)] ratio, we obtain a high ionization degree in the CND of NGC 1068. It is found that HC3N is concentrated in the east knot, while 13CCH, CH3CN, SO, HOC+, CS, CH3CCH, and H2CO are concentrated in the west knot. Compared to the star-forming galaxies M 82 and NGC 253, the chemistry of NGC 1068 might be less strongly affected by the UV radiation field, and its kinetic temperature might be lower.

We report our photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations of the superoutbursts of three dwarf novae (GWAC\,180415A, GWAC\,181017A and GWAC\,181211A) identified independently by the Ground Wide-angle Cameras system, one of the ground-based instruments of the China-France SVOM mission. Based on a combination of our photometry and that taken from the AAVSO, our period analysis of the superhumps enables us to determine the mass ratios to be 0.0967-0.1163, 0.1879-0.1883 and 0.0981-0.1173 for GWAC\,180415A, GWAC\,181017A and GWAC\,181211A, respectively. GWAC\,180415A can be firmly identified as a WZ sge-type dwarf novae due to its long duration ($\sim2$ weeks) multiple rebrightenings with amplitudes of 3-4 magnitudes, the early superhump associated with a double-wave modulation and the low mass ratio. The inferred low mass ratio and location in the $\varepsilon-P_{\mathrm{orb}}$ diagram suggest that GWAC\,181211A is a WZ sge-type dwarf novae candidate. The measured Balmer decrements suggest the Balmer line emission is produced from an optical thick region in GWAC\,180415A and GWAC\,181017A, and from an optical thin region in GWAC\,181211A.

A small fraction of millicharged dark matter (DM) is considered in the literature to give an interpretation about the enhanced 21-cm absorption at the cosmic dawn. Here we focus on the case that the main component of DM is self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), motivated by the small scale problems. For self interactions of SIDM being compatible from dwarf to cluster scales, velocity-dependent self interactions mediated by a light scalar $φ$ is considered. To fermionic SIDM $Ψ$, the main annihilation mode $Ψ\barΨ \to φφ$ is a $p -$wave process. The thermal transition of SIDM $\rightleftarrows φ\rightleftarrows$ standard model (SM) particles in the early universe sets a lower bound on couplings of $φ$ to SM particles, which has been excluded by DM direct detections, and here we consider SIDM in the thermal equilibrium via millicharged DM. For $m_φ>$ twice millicharged DM mass, $φ$ could decay quickly and avoid excess energy injection to the big bang nucleosynthesis. Thus, the $φ-$SM particle couplings could be very tiny and evade DM direct detections. The picture of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-nucleus scattering with contact interactions fails for SIDM-nucleus scattering with a light mediator, and a method is explored in this paper, with which a WIMP search result can be converted into the hunt for SIDM in direct detections.

The CMB observation sets stringent constraints on MeV dark matter (DM) annihilating into charged states/photons in s-wave, and the recent observation of the 21-cm absorption at the cosmic dawn reported by EDGES is also very strict for s-wave annihilations of MeV DM. The millicharged DM with p-wave dominant annihilations during the freeze-out period are considered in literatures to give an explanation about the 21-cm absorption, with photon mediated scattering cooling the hydrogen. In this paper, we focus on the annihilation of millicharged DM being s-wave dominant. To explain the 21-cm absorption and meanwhile be compatible with the CMB and 21-cm absorption bounds on DM annihilations, we consider the annihilation close to the resonance, with the new mediator (here is dark photon) mass being slightly above twice of the millicharged DM mass. In this case, the annihilation cross section at the temperature $T \to 0$ could be much smaller than that at $T_f$, which would be tolerated by the bounds on DM annihilations, avoiding the excess heating from DM s-wave annihilations to the hydrogen gas. The beam dump and lepton collider experiments can be employed to hunt for millicharged DM via the production of the invisible dark photon.

We present observations of the C-band $1_{10}-1_{11}$ (4.8 GHz) and Ku-band $2_{11}-2_{12}$ (14.5 GHz) K-doublet lines of H$_2$CO and the C-band $1_{10}-1_{11}$ (4.6 GHz) line of H$_2$$^{13}$CO toward a large sample of Galactic molecular clouds, through the Shanghai Tianma 65-m radio telescope (TMRT). Our sample with 112 sources includes strong H$_2$CO sources from the TMRT molecular line survey at C-band and other known H$_2$CO sources. All three lines are detected toward 38 objects (43 radial velocity components) yielding a detection rate of 34\%. Complementary observations of their continuum emission at both C- and Ku-bands were performed. Combining spectral line parameters and continuum data, we calculate the column densities, the optical depths and the isotope ratio H$_2$$^{12}$CO/H$_2$$^{13}$CO for each source. To evaluate photon trap** caused by sometimes significant opacities in the main isotopologue's rotational mm-wave lines connecting our measured K-doublets, and to obtain $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C abundance ratios, we used the RADEX non-LTE model accounting for radiative transfer effects. This implied the use of the new collision rates from \citet{Wiesenfeld2013}. Also implementing distance values from trigonometric parallax measurements for our sources, we obtain a linear fit of $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C = (5.08$\pm$1.10)D$_{GC}$ + (11.86$\pm$6.60), with a correlation coefficient of 0.58. D$_{GC}$ refers to Galactocentric distances. Our $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios agree very well with the ones deduced from CN and C$^{18}$O but are lower than those previously reported on the basis of H$_2$CO, tending to suggest that the bulk of the H$_2$CO in our sources was formed on dust grain mantles and not in the gas phase.

The second observational campaign of gravitational waves organized by the LIGO/Virgo Collaborations has led to several breakthroughs such as the detection of gravitational wave signals from merger systems involving black holes or neutrons stars. During O2,14 gravitational wave alerts were sent to the astronomical community with sky regions covering mostly over hundreds of square degrees. Among them, 6 have been finally confirmed as real astrophysical events. Since 2013, a new set of ground-based robotic telescopes called GWAC and its pathfinder mini-GWAC have been developed to contribute to the various challenges of themulti-messenger and time domain astronomy. The GWAC system is built up in the framework of the ground-segment system of the SVOM mission that will be devoted to the study of the multi-wavelength transient sky in the next decade. During O2, only the mini-GWAC telescopenetwork was fully operational. Due to the wide field of view and fast automatic follow-up capabilities of the mini-GWAC telescopes, they were well adapted to efficiently cover the sky localization areas of the gravitational wave event candidates. In this paper, we present the mini-GWAC pipeline we have set up to respond to the GW alerts and we report our optical follow-up observations of 8 GW alerts detected during the O2 run. Our observations provided the largest coverage of the GW localization areas in a short latency made by any optical facility. We found tens of optical transient candidates in our images, but none of those could be securely associated with any confirmed black hole-black hole merger event. Based on this first experience and the near future technical improvements of our network system, we will be more competitive to detect the optical counterparts from some gravitational wave events that will be detected during the upcoming O3 run, especially those emerging from binary neutron star mergers.

These two issues may be related to each other, e.g., pseudoscalar $A$ mediated fermionic millicharged dark matter (DM), and the 21-cm absorption could be induced by photon mediated scattering between MeV millicharged DM and hydrogen. This will be explored in this paper. For fermionic millicharged DM $\barχ χ$ with masses in a range of $2 m_A < 2 m_χ < 3 m_A$, the p-wave annihilation $\barχ χ\to A A$ would be dominant during DM freeze-out. The s-wave annihilation $\barχ χ$ $\to A, γ$ $\to e^+ e^-$ is tolerant by constraints from CMB and the 21-cm absorption. The millicharged DM can evade constraints from direct detection experiments. The process of $K^+ \to π^+ π^0$ with the invisible decay $π^0 \to \barχ χ$ could be employed to search for the millicharged DM, and future high intensity $K^+$ sources, such as NA62, will do the job.

A strong absorption profile was reported by the EDGES Collaboration, which indicates the hydrogen gas being colder than expected. It could be signatures of non-gravitational interactions between normal matter and dark matter (DM), and a potential explanation is that a small fraction of millicharged DM scatters with normal matter, with the DM mass in tens of MeV. To obtain the small fraction of millicharged DM and meanwhile being tolerant with by the constraints, the dark photon portal scalar and vector millicharged DM are explored in this paper. We consider that the mass of dark photon is slightly above twice of the millicharged DM mass, and thus the millicharged DM predominantly annihilates in p-wave during the freeze-out period, with the annihilation being enhanced near the resonance. The dark photon mainly decays into millicharged DM, and couplings of dark photon with SM particles could be allowed by the lepton collision experiments. The corresponding parameter spaces are derived. Future lepton collision experiments can be employed to search for millicharged DM via the production of the invisible dark photon.

A possible dark matter (DM) explanation about the long-standing issue of the Galactic 511 keV line is explored in this paper. For DM cascade annihilations of concern, a DM pair $π_d^{+} π_d^{-}$ annihilates into unstable $π_d^{0} π_d^{0}$, and $π_d^{0}$ decays into $e^+ e^-$ with new interactions suggested by the $^8$Be anomaly. Considering the constraints from the effective neutrino number $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$ and the 511 keV gamma-ray emission, a range of DM is obtained, $11.6 \lesssim m_{π_d^{\pm}} \lesssim 15$ MeV. The typical DM annihilation cross section today is about 3.3 $\times$ $10^{-29}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$, which can give an explanation about the 511 keV line. The MeV scale DM may be searched by the DM-electron scattering, and the upper limit set by the CMB s-wave annihilation is derived in DM direct detections.

Interpretation of the gamma-ray excess and AMS-02 antiprotons: Velocity dependent dark matter annihilations

The two messenger results of the GeV gamma-ray excess at the Galactic center and a probable antiproton excess in the recent AMS-02 observation suggest that these two anomalies may be owing to the same origin --- the dark matter (DM) annihilation into $b \bar b$, while these results seem in tension with the dwarf spheroidal galaxy observations. To give a compatible explanation about it, we consider the pseudoscalar DM particles $S_d^+ S_d^-$ annihilating via $S_d^+ S_d^- \rightarrow S_d^0 S_d^0$, with the process mediated by a new scalar $φ$ and $S_d^0$ quickly decaying into $b \bar{b}$. For the particles $S_d^+$, $S_d^-$ and $S_d^0$ in a triplet with degenerate masses, the annihilation cross section of DM today is linearly dependent on the relative velocity $v_r$, and thus constraints from the dwarf spheroidal galaxies are relaxed. The parameter spaces are derived with corresponding constraints. Though traces from the new sector seem challenging to be disclosed at collider and in DM direct detections, the indirect search of the gamma-ray line from the $S_d^0$'s decay has the potential to shed light on DM annihilations, with the energy of the gamma-ray line $\sim m_{S_d^0} /2$, i.e. about 50$-$75 GeV.

The WIMPs are considered one of the favorable dark matter (DM) candidates, but as the upper bounds on the interactions between DM and standard model (SM) particles obtained by the upgraded facilities of DM direct detections get lower and lower. Researchers turn their attentions to search for less massive DM candidates, i.e. light dark matter of MeV scale. The recently measured anomalous transition in $^8$Be suggests that there exists a vectorial boson which may mediate the interaction between DM and SM particles. Based on this scenario, we combine the relevant cosmological data to constrain the mass range of DM, and have found that there exists a model parameter space where the requirements are satisfied, a range of $10.4 \lesssim m_φ \lesssim $ 16.7 MeV for scalar DM, and $13.6 \lesssim m_{V} \lesssim $ 16.7 MeV for vectorial DM is demanded. Then a possibility of directly detecting such light DM particles via the DM-electron scattering is briefly studied in this framework.

To explain the Galactic center 1 - 3 GeV gamma-ray excess, here we consider the case that a WIMP pair predominantly annihilates into an on-shell $φφ$ pair with $φ$ mainly decaying to $τ\barτ$. The masses of WIMPs are in a range about 14 - 22 GeV, and the annihilations of WIMPs are phase space suppressed today. In this annihilation scheme, the couplings of the $φ$ - standard model (SM) particles are almost arbitrary small, and the WIMP-nucleus spin-independent scattering can be tolerant by the present dark matter (DM) direct detections. A scalar mediator-Higgs field mixing is introduced, which is small and available. The lower limit on the couplings of the $φ$-SM particles set by the thermal equilibrium in the early universe is derived, and this constraint is above the neutrino background for scalar DM in direct detections. The WIMPs may be detectable at the upgraded DM direct detection experiment in the next few years, and the exotic decay $h \rightarrow φφ$, the production of $φ$ may be observable at future high-luminosity $e^+ e^-$ collider.

Recent surveys and observations have discovered dozens of them, and showed that some pre-He WDs have multi-periodic pulsations, opening up the possibility of using asteroseismology to study the interior structure of these stars. We have studied the formation of EL CVn-type binaries to understand the physics of their formation and give the properties and the space density of this population of stars in the Galaxy. We use a simple analysis to show that EL CVn binaries cannot be produced by rapid common envelope evolution because this process leads to merging of the components when a giant has such a low-mass core. We find that EL CVn-type binaries can be produced by long-term stable mass transfer between low-mass stars in close binary systems. We have comprehensively studied this formation channel and the characteristics of the resulting population of EL CVn-type binaries from more than 65,000 runs of binary evolution with primary star masses between 0.9 and $2.0M_\odot$ and assuming composition appropriate for Population I stars. The theoretical evolutionary tracks, mass ratios and the WD mass-period ($M_{\rm WD}-P$) relation are generally in agreement with observations. We conclude that many more EL CVn-type binaries remain to be discovered and that these binaries will be predominantly low-mass systems in old stellar populations.

When emission in a conical relativistic jet ceases abruptly (or decays sharply), the observed decay light curve is controlled by the high-latitude "curvature effect". Recently, Uhm & Zhang found that the decay slopes of three GRB X-ray flares are steeper than what the standard model predicts. This requires bulk acceleration of the emission region, which is consistent with a Poynting-flux-dominated outflow. In this paper, we systematically analyze a sample of 85 bright X-ray flares detected in 63 Swift GRBs, and investigate the relationship between the temporal decay index $α$ and spectral index $β$ during the steep decay phase of these flares. The $α$ value depends on the choice of the zero time point $t_0$. We adopt two methods. "Method I" takes $t_0^I$ as the first rising data point of each flare, and is the most conservative approach. We find that at 99.9% condifence level 56/85 flares have decay slopes steeper than the simplest curvature effect prediction, and therefore, are in the acceleration regime. "Method II" extrapolates the rising light curve of each flare backwards until the flux density is three orders of magnitude lower than the peak flux density, and defines the corresponding time as the time zero point (t_0^II). We find that 74/85 flares fall into the acceleration regime at 99.9% condifence level. This suggests that bulk acceleration is common, may be even ubiquitous among X-ray flares, pointing towards a Poynting-flux-dominated jet composition for these events.

The recent astronomical observation of GeV gamma-ray excess from the Galactic Center was suggested due to a $b \bar{b}$ mode in tens GeV WIMP (weakly interacting massive particle) pair annihilations, and this mode was also explored by the new dwarf galaxy observation. Considering the case the WIMP pair mass below top quark mass, a pseudoscalar $φ$ is studied in this article, which mediates the interactions between the standard model fermions and fermionic WIMPs, and neutral flavor-changing interactions in standard model fermion sectors. The $b \bar{b}$ mode is favored in WIMP pair annihilations, while the WIMP-nucleus scattering is highly suppressed in direct detection. Alternative schemes of $t \rightarrow c$ decay and single top production are employed to search WIMPs. Assuming the mass of WIMP around 5-60 GeV and with the reasonable inputs by the constraints, the branching ratio $\mathcal {B}_{t\rightarrow c \barχ χ}$ of a top quark decaying into a charm quark and a WIMP pair is derived of order $10^{-8} - 10^{-5}$, thus careful studies in the future on top-physics may help to gain a better understanding of WIMPs.

Quasar candidates are selected based on the available SDSS, KPNO 4 m telescope, XSTPS optical, and WISE near infrared photometric data. We present 509 new quasars discovered in a stripe of ~135 sq. deg from M31 to M33 along the Giant Stellar Stream in the 2011 pilot survey datasets, and also 17 new quasars discovered in an area of ~100 sq. deg that covers the central region and the southeastern halo of M31 in the 2010 commissioning datasets. These 526 new quasars have i magnitudes ranging from 15.5 to 20.0, redshifts from 0.1 to 3.2. They represent a significant increase of the number of identified quasars in the vicinity of M31 and M33. There are now 26, 62 and 139 known quasars in this region of the sky with i magnitudes brighter than 17.0, 17.5 and 18.0 respectively, of which 5, 20 and 75 are newly-discovered. These bright quasars provide an invaluable collection with which to probe the kinematics and chemistry of the ISM/IGM in the Local Group of galaxies. A total of 93 quasars are now known with locations within 2.5 deg of M31, of which 73 are newly discovered. Tens of quasars are now known to be located behind the Giant Stellar Stream, and hundreds behind the extended halo and its associated substructures of M31. The much enlarged sample of known quasars in the vicinity of M31 and M33 can potentially be utilized to construct a perfect astrometric reference frame to measure the minute PMs of M31 and M33, along with the PMs of substructures associated with the Local Group of galaxies. Those PMs are some of the most fundamental properties of the Local Group.

Its lightcurves in both the prompt and afterglow phases are similar to GRB 060614, a nearby long GRB without an associated SN. We analyze the observational data of this event and discuss the possible origins of its multi-wavelength emission. We show that its joint lightcurve at 1 keV derived from Swift BAT and XRT observations is composed of two distinguished components. The first component, whose spectrum is extremely soft (Γ= 4.32), ends with a steep decay segment, indicating the internal origin of this component. The second component is a slowly-rising, broad bump which peaks at ~10^5 seconds post the BAT trigger. Assuming that the late bump is due to onset of the afterglow, we derive the initial Lorentz factor (Gamma_0) of the GRB fireball and find that it significantly deviates from the relation between the Gamma_0 and Eiso of typical GRBs. We also check whether it follows the same anti-correlation between X-ray luminosity and the break time observed in the shallow decay phase of many typical GRBs, which is usually regarded as a signal of late energy injection from the GRB central engine. However, we find that it does not obey this correlation. We propose that the late bump could be contributed by a two-component jet. We fit the second component with an off-axis jet model for a constant medium density and find the late bump can be represented by the model. The derived jet half-opening angle is 0.30 rad and the viewing angle is 0.315 rad. The medium density is 0.05 cm^-3, possibly suggesting that it may be from a merger of compact stars. The similarity between GRBs 060614 and 100418A may indicate that the two GRBs are from the same population and the late bump observed in the two GRBs may be a signal of a two-component jet powered by the GRB central engine.

Recently, under the assumption that the Doppler effect of the relativistically expanding fireball surface is important, Qin et al. showed that in most cases the power law relationship between the pulse width and energy of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)would exist in a certain energy range. We check this prediction with two GRB samples which contain well identified pulses. A power law anti-correlation between the full pulse width and energy and a power law correlation between the pulse width ratio and energy are seen in the light curves of the majority (around 65%) of bursts of the two samples within the energy range of BATSE, suggesting that these bursts are likely to arise from the emission associated with the shocks occurred on a relativistically expanding fireball surface. For the rest of the bursts, the relationships between these quantities were not predicted previously. We propose to consider other spectral evolutionary patterns or other radiation mechanisms such as a varying synchrotron or Comptonized spectrum to check if the observed relationships for these rest bursts can also be accounted for by the Doppler model. In addition, we find that the upper limits of the width ratio for the two samples do not exceed 0.9, in agrement with what predicted previously by the Doppler model. The plateau/power law/plateau and the peaked features predicted and detected previously by Qin et al. are generally observed, with the exceptions being noticed only in a few cases. According to the distinct values of two power law indices of FWHM and ratio and energy, we divide the bursts into three subsets which are located in different areas of the two indices plane. We suspect that different locations of the two indices might correspond to different mechanisms.

The FWHM of gamma-ray burst (GRB) pulses is known to be related with energy by a power-law. We wonder if the power-law index $α$ is related with the corresponding local pulse width $FWHM_0$. Seven FRED (fast rise and exponential decay) pulse GRBs are employed to study this issue, where six of them were interpreted recently by the relativistic curvature effect (the Doppler effect of fireballs) and the corresponding local pulses were intensely studied. A regression analysis shows an anti-correlation between $log α$ and $log FWHM_0$ with a slope of $-0.37\pm0.13$. This suggests that, for the class of the GRB pulses which are consequences of the curvature effect, the difference of the local pulse width might lead to the variation of the power law index, where the smaller the width the larger the value of $α$. Since the number of sources employed in this analysis is small, our result is only a preliminary one which needs to be confirmed by larger samples.

In this paper, the effect of the intrinsic distribution of cosmological candles is investigated. We find that, in the case of a narrow distribution, the deviation of the observed modulus of sources from the expected central value could be estimated within a ceratin range. We thus introduce a lower and upper limits of $χ^{2}$, $χ_{\min}^{2}$ and $ χ_{\max}^{2}$, to estimate cosmological parameters by applying the conventional minimizing $χ^{2}$ method. We apply this method to a gamma-ray burst (GRB) sample as well as to a combined sample including this GRB sample and an SN Ia sample. Our analysis shows that: a) in the case of assuming an intrinsic distribution of candles of the GRB sample, the effect of the distribution is obvious and should not be neglected; b) taking into account this effect would lead to a poorer constraint of the cosmological parameter ranges. The analysis suggests that in the attempt of constraining the cosmological model with current GRB samples, the results tend to be worse than what previously thought if the mentioned intrinsic distribution does exist.

We study in details how the pulse width of gamma-ray bursts is related with energy under the assumption that the sources concerned are in the stage of fireballs. Due to the Doppler effect of fireballs, there exists a power law relationship between the two quantities within a limited range of frequency. The power law range and the power law index depend strongly on the observed peak energy $E_p$ as well as the rest frame radiation form, and the upper and lower limits of the power law range can be determined by $E_p$. It is found that, within the same power law range, the ratio of the $FWHM$ of the rising portion to that of the decaying phase of the pulses is also related with energy in the form of power laws. A platform-power-law-platform feature could be observed in the two relationships. In the case of an obvious softening of the rest frame spectrum, the two power law relationships also exist, but the feature would evolve to a peaked one. Predictions on the relationships in the energy range covering both the BATSE and Swift bands for a typical hard burst and a typical soft one are made. A sample of FRED (fast rise and exponential decay) pulse bursts shows that 27 out of the 28 sources belong to either the platform-power-law-platform feature class or the peaked feature group, suggesting that the effect concerned is indeed important for most of the sources of the sample. Among these bursts, many might undergo an obvious softening evolution of the rest frame spectrum.
