Large-scale cosmic filaments connect galaxies, clusters and voids. They are permeated by magnetic fields with a variety of topologies. Cosmic rays with energies up to $10^{20}\;\!{\rm eV}$ can be produced in astrophysical environments associated with star-formation and AGN activities. The fate of these cosmic rays in filaments, which cannot be directly observed on Earth, are rarely studied. We investigate the high-energy processes associated with energetic particles (cosmic rays) in filaments, adopting an ecological approach that includes galaxies, clusters/superclusters and voids as key cosmological structures in the filament ecosystem. We derive the phenomenology for modelling interfaces between filaments and these structures, and investigate how the transfer and fate of energetic cosmic ray protons are affected by the magnetism of the interfaces. We consider different magnetic field configurations in filaments and assess the implications for cosmic ray confinement and survival against hadronic pion-producing and photo-pair interactions. Our analysis shows that the fate of the particles depends on the location of their origin within a filament ecosystem, and that filaments act as `highways', channelling cosmic rays between galaxies, galaxy clusters and superclusters. Filaments can also operate as cosmic `fly paper', capturing cosmic ray protons with energies up to $10^{18}\;\!{\rm eV}$ from cosmic voids. Our analysis predicts the presence of a population of $\sim 10^{12}-10^{16}\;\!{\rm eV}$ cosmic ray protons in filaments and voids accumulated continually over cosmic time. These protons do not suffer significant energy losses through photo-pair or pion-production, nor can they be cooled efficiently. Instead, they form a cosmic ray fossil record of the power generation history of the Universe.

The optical depth parameterisation is typically used to study the 21-cm signals associated with the properties of the neutral hydrogen (HI) gas and the ionisation morphology during the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR), without solving the radiative transfer equation. To assess the uncertainties resulting from this simplification, we conduct explicit radiative transfer calculations using the cosmological 21-cm radiative transfer (C21LRT) code and examine the imprints of ionisation structures on the 21-cm spectrum. We consider a globally averaged reionisation history and implement fully ionised cavities (HII bubbles) of diameters $d$ ranging from 0.01 Mpc to 10 Mpc at epochs within the emission and the absorption regimes of the 21-cm global signal. The single-ray C21LRT calculations show that the shape of the imprinted spectral features are primarily determined by $d$ and the 21-cm line profile, which is parametrised by the turbulent velocity of the HI gas. It reveals the spectral features tied to the transition from ionised to neutral regions that calculations based on the optical depth parametrisation were unable to capture. We also present analytical approximations of the calculated spectral features of the HII bubbles. The multiple-ray calculations show that the apparent shape of a HII bubble (of $d=5$ Mpc at $z=8$), because of the finite speed of light, differs depending on whether the bubble's ionisation front is stationary or expanding. Our study shows the necessity of properly accounting for the effects of line-continuum interaction, line broadening and cosmological expansion to correctly predict the EoR 21-cm signals.

The 21-cm hyperfine line of neutral hydrogen is a useful tool to probe the conditions of the Universe during the Dark Ages, Cosmic Dawn, and the Epoch of Reionisation. In most of the current calculations, the 21-cm line signals at given frequencies are computed, using an integrated line-of-sight line opacity, with the correction for cosmological expansion. These calculations have not fully captured the line and continuum interactions in the radiative transfer, in response to evolution of the radiation field and the variations of thermal and dynamic properties of the line-of-sight medium. We construct a covariant formulation for the radiative transfer of the 21-cm line and derive the cosmological 21-cm line radiative transfer (C21LRT) equation. The formulation properly accounts for local emission and absorption processes and the interaction between the line and continuum when the radiation propagates across the expanding Universe to the present observer. Our C21LRT calculations show that methods simply summing the line optical depth could lead to error of $5\%$ in the 21-cm signals for redshift $z \sim 12-35$ and of $>10\%$ for redshift $z \lesssim 8$. Proper covariant radiative transfer is therefore necessary for producing correct theoretical templates for extracting information of the structural evolution of the Universe through the Epoch of Reionisation from the 21-cm tomographic data.

Ultra high-energy (UHE) cosmic rays (CRs) from distant sources interact with intergalactic radiation fields, leading to their spallation and attenuation. They are also deflected in intergalactic magnetic fields (IGMFs), particularly those associated with Mpc-scale structures. These deflections extend the propagation times of CR particles, forming a magnetic horizon for each CR species. The cumulative cooling and interactions of a CR ensemble also modifies their spectral shape and composition observed on Earth. We construct a transport formulation to calculate the observed UHE CR spectral composition for 4 classes of source population. The effects on CR propagation brought about by IGMFs are modeled as scattering processes during transport, by centers associated with cosmic filaments. Our calculations demonstrate that IGMFs can have a marked effect on observed UHE CRs, and that source population models are degenerate with IGMF properties. Interpretation of observations, including the endorsement or rejection of any particular source classes, thus needs careful consideration of the structural properties and evolution of IGMFs. Future observations providing tighter constraints on IGMF properties will significantly improve confidence in assessing UHE CR sources and their intrinsic CR production properties.

We have presented the first joint {\it XMM-Newton} and {\it NuSTAR} analysis of the millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary PSR J1653$-$0158. The 75-minute orbital period inferred from optical and gamma-ray observations together with the 1.97-ms pulsation in the gamma-rays indicate that this system is the most compact Black Widow MSP system known to date. The orbital period was not detected in the {\it XMM-Newton} and {\it NuSTAR} data, probably due to insufficient photon counts obtained in the observations. Fitting the joint X-ray spectrum of PSR J1653$-$0158 with a power law gives a photon index $Γ= 1.71 \pm 0.09$. The X-ray luminosity of the source in the ($0.2-40$)~keV band is deduced to be $1.18 \times 10^{31}\;\!{\rm erg~s}^{-1}$, for an adopted distance of 0.84~kpc. We have shown that the broad-band X-ray spectrum can be explained by synchrotron radiation from electrons accelerated in the intra-binary shock, and the gamma-rays detected in the {\it Fermi} data are curvature radiations from electrons and positrons in the pulsar magnetosphere. Our kinematic analysis of the Tidarren systems PSR~J1653--0158 and PSR~J1311--3430 indicates that the two Tidarren systems are likely to have originated in the Galactic Disk.

We demonstrate that a non-negligible fraction of the UHE CRs arriving on Earth could originate from beyond the GZK horizon when heavy nuclear CRs, and the population and evolution of UHE CR sources are taken into account. We show how the multi-particle CR horizon is modified by different source populations, and discuss how this leads to the natural emergence of an isotropic flux component in the observed UHE CR background. This component would coexist with an anisotropic foreground component contributed by nearby sources within the GZK horizon.

Typically, the Universe would become `opaque' to UHE CRs after several tens of Mpc, setting the boundary of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min (GZK) horizon. In this work, we investigate the contribution of sources beyond the conventional GZK horizon to the UHE CR flux observed on Earth, when photo-spallation of the heavy nuclear CRs is taken into account. We demonstrate this contribution is substantial, despite the strong attenuation of UHE CRs. A significant consequence is the emergence of an isotropic background component in the observed flux of UHE CRs, coexisting with the anisotropic foreground component that are associated with nearby sources. Multi-particle CR horizons, which evolve over redshift, are determined by the CR nuclear composition. Thus, they are dependent on the source populations and source evolutionary histories.

Binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are believed to have descended from low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), which have experienced substantial mass transfer and tidal circularization. Therefore, they should have very circular orbits. However, the discovery of several eccentric binary MSPs (with eccentricity $e\sim 0.01-0.1$) challenges this standard picture. Three models have been proposed thus far based on accretion-induced collapse of massive white dwarfs (WDs), neutron star-strange star transition, and formation of circumbinary disks. All of them are subject to various uncertainties, and are not entirely consistent with observations. Here we propose an alternative model taking into account the influence of thermonuclear flashes on proto-WDs. We assume that the flashes lead to asymmetrical mass ejection, which imparts a mild kick on the proto-WDs. By simulating orbital changes of binary MSPs with multiple shell flashes, we show that it is possible to reproduce the observed eccentricities, provided that the kick velocities are around a few kms$^{-1}$.

However, the masses of the two components in SS433 and even the nature of the compact object are still under debate. In this work, assuming that the compact object is a black hole, we employ a binary population synthesis method to study the formation of SS433. We use previous estimates of the age of W50 and the duration of the jet activity to constrain the evolutionary history. Our calculations suggest that SS433 likely harboured a Hertzsprung gap star at the beginning of the current Roche-lobe overflow phase. The masses of the black hole and the optical/donor star in SS433 suggested by the simulations are around $8\ M_{\odot}$ and $24\ M_{\odot}$, respectively. Future measurement of the donor mass and radius can help infer not only the orgin of the binary but also the nature of the nebula W50.

We present a statistical analysis of the variable C iv broad absorption line (BAL) in the quasar SDSS J141007.74+541203.3, which have been observed with 44 epochs by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14. In this paper, we confirm the anticorrelation between the equivalent width of BALs and the flux of the continuum based on the spectra of this quasar that show significant variations, which serve as another independent evidence for the view of Grier et al. The bright transient AT2018cow has been unlike any other known type of transient. Its high brightness, rapid rise and decay and initially nearly featureless spectrum are unprecedented and difficult to explain using models for similar burst sources. We present evidence for faint gamma-ray emission continuing for at least 8 days, and featureless spectra in the ultraviolet bands -- both unusual for eruptive sources. The X-ray variability of the source has a burst-like character. The UV-optical spectrum does not show any CNO line but is well described by a blackbody. We demonstrate that a model invoking the tidal disruption of a 0.1 - 0.4 Msun Helium White Dwarf (WD) by a 100,000 to one million solar mass Black Hole (BH) located in the outskirts of galaxy Z~137-068 could provide an explanation for most of the characteristics shown in the multi-wavelength observations. A blackbody-like emission is emitted from an opaque photosphere, formed by the debris of the WD disruption. Broad features showing up in the optical/infrared spectra in the early stage are probably velocity broadened lines produced in a transient high-velocity outward moving cocoon. The asymmetric optical/infrared lines that appeared at a later stage are emission from an atmospheric layer when it detached from thermal equilibrium with the photosphere, which undergoes more rapid cooling. The photosphere shrinks when its temperature drops, and the subsequent infall of the atmosphere produced asymmetric line profiles. Additionally, a non-thermal jet might be present, emitting X-rays in the 10-150 keV band.

We report a detailed analysis of the orbital properties of binary millisecond pulsar (MSP) with a white dwarf (WD) companion. Positive correlations between the orbital period $P_{\rm b}$ and eccentricity $ε$ are found in two classes of MSP binaries with a He WD and with a CO/ONeMg WD, though their trends are different. The distribution of $P_{\rm b}$ is not uniform. Deficiency of sources at $P_{\rm b}\sim35-50$~days (Gap 1) have been mentioned in previous studies. On the other hand, another gap at $P_{\rm b}\sim2.5-4.5$~days (Gap 2) is identified for the first time. Inspection of the relation between $P_{\rm b}$ and the companion masses $M_{\rm c}$ revealed the subpopulations of MSP binaries with a He WD separated by Gap 1, above which $P_{\rm b}$ is independent of $M_{\rm c}$ (horizontal branch) but below which $P_{\rm b}$ correlates strongly with $M_{\rm c}$ (lower branch). Distinctive horizontal branch and lower branch separated by Gap 2 were identified for the MSP binaries with a CO/ONeMg WD at shorter $P_{\rm b}$ and higher $M_{\rm c}$. Generally, $M_{\rm c}$ are higher in the horizontal branch than in the lower branch for the MSP binaries with a He WD. These properties can be explained in terms of a binary orbital evolution scenario in which the WD companion was ablated by a pulsar wind in the post mass-transfer phase.

From the photometric solution, it is found that the LO Com is a W-type W UMa binary with a mass ratio of q={m}2/{m}1=2.478 and a contact degree of f=(3.2+/- 0.25) % . By combining the two new minimum times with those published earlier in the literature, we have found that the (O - C) curve shows a downward parabolic variation corresponding to a long-term decrease in the orbital period with a rate of {d}P/{d}t=-1.18*{10}-7 days yr-1. This long-term decrease in its orbital period may be caused by mass transfer from the more massive component to the less massive one.

According to the concordance index, this sample is classified into two subsamples. Subsample I shows an anti-correlation between the variations of absorption lines and the continuum, while Subsample II exhibits a positive correlation. These results imply that these variable C iv λλ1548; 1551 absorption doublets are intrinsic to the corresponding quasars and that their variations are caused primarily by the fluctuations of the ionizing continuum. Based on our analysis, we propose that there might be two kinds of absorption gas: one that is very sensitive to the continuum variations, the another that is not. In addition, we suggest that in many cases the emergence or disappearance of NALs is caused by fluctuations of the ionizing continuum.

The SDSS spectra of the newly found WDMS binaries with a DA/DB white dwarf and an M/late-K dwarf companion are analyzed based on a spectral decomposition/fitting method. White dwarf effective temperatures, surface gravities and masses together with the secondary star spectral types are obtained, and the stellar parameters of DA WDs with $T_{\rm eff}\la 14,000$ K are revised to the results in the case of 3D model atmosphere. Two independent distance estimates are derived from the flux-scaling factors between the WDMS SDSS spectra and the white dwarf and M-dwarf model spectra. It is found that about more than 20 per cent of the newly found WDMS binaries show a significant discrepancy between the two distance estimates. This might be caused by the effects of M-dwarf stellar activity or irradiation of the M dwarf companions by the white dwarf. The stellar parameter distributions are used to investigate the global properties of newly found WDMS binaries, the results shown in this work are consistent with those derived by previous investigators. Some WDMS binaries have been observed more than one ($2-4$) times by SDSS, it is found that four of them exhibit not only Hydrogen emission in all observable Balmer series lines in addition to He I line Balmer lines but also the rapid variation in the radial velocities of the components in these binaries. This suggests that they should be the post common envelope binaries (PCEBs) with a short orbital period. These young PCEBs are very important for limiting the results of common envelope phase of the binary evolution.

Two major processes have been proposed to convert the coronal magnetic energy into the kinetic energy of a coronal mass ejection (CME): resistive magnetic reconnection and ideal macroscopic magnetohydrodynamic instability of magnetic flux rope. However, it remains elusive whether both processes play a comparable role or one of them prevails during a particular eruption. To shed light on this issue, we carefully studied energetic but flareless CMEs, \textit{i.e.}, fast CMEs not accompanied by any flares. Through searching the Coordinated Data Analysis Workshops (CDAW) database of CMEs observed in Solar Cycle 23, we found 13 such events with speeds larger than 1000 km s$^{-1}$. Other common observational features of these events are: (1) none of them originated in active regions; they were associated with eruptions of well-developed long filaments in quiet-Sun regions, (2) no apparent enhancement of flare emissions was present in soft X-ray, EUV and microwave data. Further studies of two events reveal that (1) the reconnection electric fields, as inferred from the product of the separation speed of post-eruption ribbons and the photospheric magnetic field measurement, were in general weak; (2) the period with a measurable reconnection electric field is considerably shorter than the total filament-CME acceleration time. These observations indicate that, for these fast CMEs, the magnetic energy was released mainly via the ideal flux rope instability through the work done by the large scale Lorentz force acting on the rope currents rather than via magnetic reconnections. We also suggest that reconnections play a less important role in accelerating CMEs in quiet Sun regions of weak magnetic field than those in active regions of strong magnetic field.
