Magnetic reconnection plays a crucial role in the energy release process for different kinds of solar eruptions and activities. The rapid solar eruption requires a fast reconnection model. Plasmoid instability in the reconnecting current sheets is one of the most acceptable fast reconnection mechanisms for explaining the explosive events in the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scale, which is also a potential bridge between the macroscopic MHD reconnection process and microscale dissipations. Plenty of high resolution observations indicate that the plasmoid-like structures exist in the high temperature solar corona, but such evidences are very rare in the lower solar atmosphere with partially ionized plasmas. Utilizing joint observations from the Goode Solar Telescope (GST) and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), we discovered a small-scale eruptive phenomenon in NOAA AR 13085, characterized by clear reconnection cusp structures, supported by Nonlinear Force-Free Field (NLFFF) extrapolation results. The plasmoid-like structures with a size about 150 km were observed to be ejected downward from the current sheet at a maximum velocity of 24 km$\cdot$s$^{-1}$ in the H$α$ line wing images, followed by enhanced emissions at around the post flare loop region in multiple wave lengths. Our 2.5D high-resolution MHD simulations further reproduced such a phenomenon and revealed reconnection fine structures. These results provide comprehensive evidences for the plasmoid mediated reconnection in partially ionized plasmas, and suggest an unified reconnection model for solar flares with different length scales from the lower chromosphere to corona.

The holographic principle suggests that regions of space contain fewer physical degrees of freedom than would be implied by conventional quantum field theory. Meanwhile, in Hilbert spaces of large dimension $2^n$, it is possible to define $N \gg n$ Pauli algebras that are nearly anti-commuting (but not quite) and which can be thought of as "overlap** degrees of freedom". We propose to model the phenomenology of holographic theories by allowing field-theory modes to be overlap**, and derive potential observational consequences. In particular, we build a Fermionic quantum field whose effective degrees of freedom approximately obey area scaling and satisfy a cosmic Bekenstein bound, and compare predictions of that model to cosmic neutrino observations. Our implementation of holography implies a finite lifetime of plane waves, which depends on the overall UV cutoff of the theory. To allow for neutrino flux from blazar TXS 0506+056 to be observable, our model needs to have a cutoff $k_{\mathrm{UV}} \lesssim 500\, k_{\mathrm{LHC}}\,$. This is broadly consistent with current bounds on the energy spectrum of cosmic neutrinos from IceCube, but high energy neutrinos are a potential challenge for our model of holography. We motivate our construction via quantum mereology, i.e. using the idea that EFT degrees of freedom should emerge from an abstract theory of quantum gravity by finding quasi-classical Hilbert space decompositions. We also discuss how to extend the framework to Bosons. Finally, using results from random matrix theory we derive an analytical understanding of the energy spectrum of our theory. The numerical tools used in this work are publicly available within the GPUniverse package, https://github.com/OliverFHD/GPUniverse .

Ellerman bombs (EBs) with significant H$α$ wing emissions and ultraviolet bursts (UV bursts) with strong Si IV emissions are two kinds of small transient brightening events that occur in the low solar atmosphere. We numerically investigated the magnetic reconnection process between the emerging arch magnetic field and the lower atmospheric background magnetic field. We aim to find out if the hot UV emissions and much colder H$α$ wing emissions can both appear in the same reconnection process and how they are located in the reconnection region. The open-source code NIRVANA was applied to perform the 2.5D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation. We developed the related sub-codes to include the more realistic radiative cooling process for the photosphere and chromosphere and the time-dependent ionization degree of hydrogen. The initial background magnetic field is 600 G, and the emerged magnetic field in the solar atmosphere is of the same magnitude, meaning that it results in a low- $β$ magnetic reconnection environment. We also used the radiative transfer code RH1.5D to synthesize the Si IV and H$α$ spectral line profiles based on the MHD simulation results. Magnetic reconnection between emerged and background magnetic fields creates a thin, curved current sheet, which then leads to the formation of plasmoid instability and the nonuniform density distributions. The mix of hot tenuous and much cooler dense plasmas in the turbulent reconnection region can appear at about the same height, or even in the same plasmoid. The turbulent current sheet is always in a dense plasma environment with an optical depth larger than 6.5$\times$10$^{-5}$ due to the emerged magnetic field pushing high-density plasmas upward.

Ultra-slow-roll~(USR) inflation predicts an exponential amplification of scalar perturbations at small scales, which leads to a stochastic gravitational wave background~(SGWB) through the coupling of the scalar and tensor modes at the second-order expansion of the Einstein equation. In this work, we search for such a scalar-induced SGWB from the NANOGrav 15-year (NG15) dataset, and find that the SGWB from USR inflation could explain the observed data. We place constraints on the amplitude of the scalar power spectrum to $P_{\mathrm{Rp}} > 10^{-1.80}$ at $95\%$ confidence level (C.L.) at the scale of $k\sim 20\, \mathrm{pc}^{-1}$. We find that $\log_{10} P_{\mathrm{Rp}}$ degenerates with the peak scale $\log_{10} k_{\mathrm{p}}$. We also obtain the parameter space allowed by the data in the USR inflationary scenario, where the $e$-folding numbers of the duration of the USR phase has a lower limit $ΔN > 2.80$ ($95\%$ C.L.) when the USR phase ends at $N\approx 20$. Since the priors for the model parameters %in the USR model are uncertain, we do not calculate the Bayes factors. Instead, to quantify the goodness of fit, we calculate the maximum values of the log-likelihood for USR inflation, bubble collision of the cosmological phase transition, and inspiraling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), respectively. Our results imply that the SGWB from USR inflation can fit the data better than the one from SMBHBs.

A current sheet (CS) is the central structure in the disrupting magnetic configuration during solar eruptions. More than 90\% of the free magnetic energy (the difference between the energy in the non-potential magnetic field and that in the potential one) stored in the coronal magnetic field beforehand is converted into heating and kinetic energy of the plasma, as well as accelerating charged particles, by magnetic reconnection occurring in the CS. However, the detailed physical properties and fine structures of the CS are still unknown since there is no relevant information obtained via in situ detections. The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) may provide us such information should it traverse a CS in the eruption. The perihelion of PSP's final orbit is located at about 10 solar radii from the center of the Sun, so it can observe the CS at a very close distance, or even traverses the CS, which provides us a unique opportunity to look into fine properties and structures of the CS, hel** reveal the detailed physics of large-scale reconnection that was impossible before. We evaluate the probability that PSP can traverse a CS, and examine the orbit of a PSP-like spacecraft that has the highest probability to traverse a CS.

The nonattractor evolution in ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflation results in the amplification of superhorizon curvature perturbations and then induces a strong and detectable stochastic gravitational wave background. In this letter, we search for such a stochastic gravitational wave background in data from the third LIGO-Virgo observing run and place constraints on the USR inflationary models. The $e$-folding number of the USR phase are constrained to be $ΔN \lesssim 2.9$ at the 95% confidence level and the power spectrum of curvature perturbations amplified during the USR phase is constrained to be $\log_{10}P_{R\mathrm{p}}<-1.7$ at the scales $2.9\times10^5 ~\mathrm{pc^{-1}} \lesssim k \lesssim 1.7\times10^{11}~\mathrm{pc^{-1}}$. Besides, we forecast the ability of future experiments to constrain USR inflation, and find $P_{R\mathrm{p}}\lesssim 10^{-3.6}$ for LISA and Taiji, $P_{R\mathrm{p}}\lesssim 10^{-3.3}$ for Cosmic Explore and Einstein Telescope, $P_{R\mathrm{p}}\lesssim 10^{-5.5}$ for DECIGO and Big Bang Observer and $P_{R\mathrm{p}}\lesssim 10^{-5.2}$ for Square Kilometre Array.

Ultraviolet (UV) bursts and Ellerman bombs (EBs) are small-scale magnetic reconnection events taking place in the highly stratified, low solar atmosphere. It is still not clear whether UV bursts have to be generated at a higher atmospheric layer than EBs or whether both UV bursts and EBs can occur in the low chromosphere. We numerically studied the low $β$ magnetic reconnection process around the solar temperature minimum region (TMR). The time-dependent ionization degrees of hydrogen and helium are included in the MHD code, which lead to a more realistic magnetic diffusion caused by electron-neutral collision and ambipolar diffusion. A more realistic radiative cooling model from Carlsson & Leenaarts 2012 is included in the simulations. Our results in high resolution indicate that the plasmas in the reconnection region are heated up to more than $20,000$ K if the reconnecting magnetic field is as strong as $500$ G, which suggests that UV bursts can be generated in the dense low chromosphere. The dominant mechanism for producing the UV burst in the low chromosphere is heating, as a result of the local compression in the reconnection process. The thermal energy occurring in the reconnection region rapidly increases after the turbulent reconnection mediated by plasmoids is invoked. The average power density of the generated thermal energy in the reconnection region can reach over $1000$ erg cm$^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$, which is comparable to the average power density accounting for a UV burst. With the strength of the reconnecting magnetic field exceeding $900$ G, the width of the synthesized Si IV 1394 A line profile with multiple peaks can reach up to $100$ km s$^{-1}$, which is consistent with observations.

Ellerman bombs (EBs) and Ultraviolet (UV) bursts are common brightening phenomena which are usually generated in the low solar atmosphere of emerging flux regions. In this paper, we have investigated the emergence of an initial un-twisted magnetic flux rope based on three-dimensional (3D) magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. The EB-like and UV burst-like activities successively appear in the U-shaped part of the undulating magnetic fields triggered by Parker Instability. The EB-like activity starts to appear earlier and lasts for about 80 seconds. Six minutes later, a much hotter UV burst-like event starts to appear and lasts for about 60 seconds. Along the direction vertical to the solar surface, both the EB and UV burst start in the low chromosphere, but the UV burst extends to a higher altitude in the up chromosphere. The regions with apparent temperature increase in the EB and UV burst are both located inside the small twisted flux ropes generated in magnetic reconnection processes, which are consistent with the previous 2D simulations that most hot regions are usually located inside the magnetic islands. However, the twisted flux rope corresponding to the EB is only strongly heated after it floats up to an altitude much higher than the reconnection site during that period. Our analyses show that the EB is heated by the shocks driven by the strong horizontal flows at two sides of the U-shaped magnetic fields. The twisted flux rope corresponding to the UV burst is heated by the driven magnetic reconnection process.

We investigate the cosmological observational test of the extended quintessence model, i.e. a scalar-tensor gravity model with a scalar field potential serving as dark energy, by using the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, together with the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and redshift-space distortion (RSD) data. As an example, we consider the model with a Brans-Dicke kinetic term $\frac{ω(φ)}φ φ_{;μ} φ^{;μ} $ and a quadratic scalar potential $V (φ) = A + B (φ- φ_0) + \frac{C}{2} (φ- φ_0)^2$, which reduces to general relativity (GR) in the limit $ω(φ) \to \infty$, and the cosmological constant in the limit $B=C=0$. In such a model the scalar field typically rolls down the potential and oscillates around the minimum of $V (φ)$. We find that the model parameter estimate for the CMB+BAO+RSD data set is given by $\lg α= -3.6 _{-0.54}^{+0.66}~ (68\%)$, corresponding to $ 3.8 \times 10^5 < ω_0 < 9.5 \times 10^7~ (68\%)$, and $\lg C = 4.9 \pm 1.4~ (68\%) $. However, the GR $Λ$CDM model can fit the data almost as good as this extended quintessence model, and is favored by the Akaike information criterion (AIC). The variation of the gravitational constant since the epoch of Recombination is constrained to be $0.97 < G_{\rm rec}/G_0 < 1.03~ (1 σ)$. In light of recent report that the CMB data favors a closed universe, we consider the case with non-flat geometry in our fit, and find that the mean value of $Ω_k$ shifts a little bit from $-0.049$ to $-0.036$, and the parameters in our model are not degenerate with $Ω_k$.

The cosmic infrared background (CIB) anisotropies and cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing are powerful measurements for exploring the cosmological and astrophysical problems. In this work, we measure the auto-correlation power spectrum of the CIB anisotropies in the Herschel-SPIRE HerMES Large Mode Survey (HeLMS) field, and the cross power spectrum with the CMB lensing measurements from the Planck satellite. The HeLMS field covers more than 270 deg^2, which is much larger than the previous analysis. We use the Herschel Level 1 time stream data to merge the CIB maps at 250, 350, and 500 um bands, and mask the areas where the flux is greater than 3-sigma (~50 mJy/beam) or no measured data. We obtain the final CIB power spectra at 100<ell<20000 by considering several effects, such as beam function, mode coupling, transfer function, and so on. We also calculate the theoretical CIB auto- and cross-power spectra of CIB and CMB lensing by assuming that the CIB emissivity follows Gaussian distribution in redshift. We find that, for the CIB auto power spectra, we obtain the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 15.9, 15.7, and 15.3 at 250, 350, and 500 um, and for the CIBxCMB lensing power spectra, SNR of 7.5, 7.0, and 6.2 at 250, 350, and 500 um, respectively. Comparing to previous works, the constraints on the relevant CIB parameters are improved by factors of 2~5 in this study.

Ultra-light axions (ULAs) with mass less than 10^-20 eV have interesting behaviors that may contribute to either dark energy or dark matter at different epochs of the Universe. Its properties can be explored by cosmological observations, such as expansion history of the Universe, cosmic large-scale structure, cosmic microwave background, etc. In this work, we study the ULAs with a mass around 10^-33 eV, which means the ULA field still rolls slowly at present with the equation of state w=-1 as dark energy. In order to investigate the mass and other properties of this kind of ULA field, we adopt the measurements of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and Hubble parameter H(z). The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique is employed to perform the constraints on the parameters. Finally, by exploring four cases of the model, we find that the mass of this ULA field is about 3x10^-33 eV if assuming the initial axion field phi_i=M_pl. We also investigate a general case by assuming phi_i< M_pl and find that the fitting results of phi_i/M_pl are consistent with or close to 1 for the datasets we use.

We investigate the model of dark matter-dark energy (DM-DE) interaction with coupling strength proportional to the multiplication of dark sector densities with different power indices $Q = γρ_{\rm c}^α ρ_{\rm d}^β$. We first investigate the modification of the cosmic expansion history, and then further develop the formalism to take into account the cosmological perturbations and dark matter temperature evolution. We then use the latest observational cosmology data, including cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) data, redshift-space distortion (RSD) data and Type Ia supernovae (SNe) data to constrain the model parameters. We find in the phantom region, a positive $α$ is preferred by the data above $2\, σ$ statistic significance. If we choose the power indices to be integers or half-integers for {\it plausible} physics of particle interaction, the allowed values within $1\, σ$ confidence regions are $α= 0.5$ and $β= 0, 0.5, 1$. The inclusion of BAO and RSD data from large-scale structure and SNe data improves the constraints significantly. Our model predicts lower values of $f(z) σ_8(z)$ at $z<1$ comparing to $Λ$CDM model, which alleviates the tension of $Λ$CDM with various RSD data from optical galaxy surveys. Overall, the DM-DE interaction model is consistent with the current observational data, especially providing a better fit to the RSD data.
